Research has been conducted to develop a technique for predicting the effective volume resistivity of a fly ash layer that has been exposed to circumstances leading to a hot-side precipitator problem known as sodium depletion. Eight fly ashes, representing a major portion of U.S. coals, were evaluated by subjecting 0.5 cm ash layers to a continuously applied voltage gradient of 4 kV/cm for periods of time up to 35 days at a temperature of 350°C (662°F). Resistivity was determined at 350°C before the test started and after the long period of applied voltage used to create the sodium depleted situation. In this condition, resistivity was also determined at 280°C (536°F) for an average electric field Intensity of 4 kV/cm and immediately prior to breakdown. This experimental method can be used with any ash sample to estimate resistivity In a sodium depleted condition. But in addition, a correlation resulting from these resistivity data has been developed. This correlation Is combined with an existing technique for predicting resistivity to produce a method for calculating the expected ash layer resistivity after sodium depletion has occurred.  相似文献

High resistivity dust is normally the major problem in electrostatic precipitation. Even though the corona current is only a fraction of a microampere per cm2 the resulting RI drop exceeds the breakdown voltage gradient of the dust layer. This breakdown or sparking through the collected dust causes the familiar back corona and premature sparkover. The Trielectrode Electrostatic Precipitator (TEP) is an effort to make precipitator performance insensitive to dust resistivity. The TEP (U. S. Patent 3,915,672) is based on the concept that the layer of collected dust behaves like capacitance and resistance in parallel so that the corona can occur in short pulses and yet maintain a moderately constant current through the dust layer. In between corona pulses the precipitating field is supplied by a third set of electrodes. Initial bench scale tests using high resistivity particulate indicate that the concept is sound. Recent testing has extended the effective operating range of the TEP for particulate resistivities of 1010-1013 ohm-cm indicating that the TEP is essentially insensitive to particulate resistivity and can give a constant high collection efficiency regardless of the type of coal burned in a utility application.  相似文献

This paper develops an expression for the resistivity of a dust layer which takes into account its particulate nature, dependence of the surface resistivity component on water vapor pressure and temperature, the volume resistivity and the intrinsic properties of the particulate material. A new expression is given for the surface resistivity which, when combined with the equation for volume resistivity, enables the effective resistance of a dust layer to be characterized by five meaningful parameters. These parameters may be determined for a given fly ash sample from a standard set of resistivity curves. Calculated resistivity curves for an industrially produced fly ash are compared with measured curves.  相似文献

It is well known that dust with high electrical resistivity is difficult to collect in electrostatic precipitators (ESP). The difficulty is primarily due to poor particle charging. This poor particle charging is not because particles having high electrical resistivity are intrinsically difficult to charge, but because back corona (which results from deposition of material on the collection electrode) produces a bipolar ion field. When ions of both positive and negative polarity are present in the charging region, the competing effects of the two, plus low values of electric field, produce low electrical charge on particles.  相似文献

An electrostatic precipitator preceded by a wet scrubber was tested at the Reftinskaya Power Station. The unit collects a high resistivity fly ash from the combustion of low sulfur Ekibastuz coal. The operating parameters of the precipitator were measured as well as the mass emissions and the in-situ electrical resistivity of the fly ash. Density, particle size distribution, electrical resistivity, and chemical composition were determined for collected samples of the fly ash. The fly ash was also characterized by x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. When a centrifugal wet wall scrubber was installed ahead of the electrostatic precipitator, the temperature of the flue gas entering the precipitator was decreased and the moisture content increased. The electrical resistivity of the fly ash was attenuated a decade, but not enough to overcome the adverse effects of back corona in the precipitator. Lowering the flue gas temperature to about 85°C by the addition of a venturi scrubber ahead of the centrifugal scrubber reduced the electrical resistivity of the fly ash another decade and allowed the operation of the precipitator without back corona.  相似文献

A charging/collecting device for high-resistivity fly ash has been developed which controls back ionization by cooling the collector electrode internally with water. The device consists of parallel 6.0 cm pipes with corona wires suspended between the pipes. The pipes provide a simple means of interfacing with a cooling water system and also minimizing the collector area needing to be cooled. By cooling the pipes with 38°C (100°F) water, back ionization is eliminated and average field strengths of 7 kV/cm can be achieved with fly ash having a resistivity > 1012 ω-cm. Results of tests on an actual flue gas stream and plans for future testing are described. Initial tests using heated instead of cooled electrodes are described as well as other tests that lead to the present design. The results of tests with the heated electrode show the kind of improvements in performance that can be obtained when resistivity is controlled in only a small collection area.  相似文献

Electric generating plants burning medium-sulfur coal need a way to predict when ESP performance will be limited by high electrical resistivity of the collected fly ash. The main uncertainty in mathematical predictions of fly ash resistivity lies in the marginal effect of naturally occurring SO3 vapor in the flue gas. This paper results from a project to expand the data base of SO3/SO2 concentrations and fly ash resistivities measured in utility fly ash precipitators. Complete data sets are presented from three plants in the Southern Company electric system. In situ resistivity data are compared with laboratory measurements and with two different mathematical predictions of resistivity based on coal and ash analyses. The revised version of the resistivity predictor gives results in good agreement with resistivity values measured both in situ and in the laboratory.  相似文献

This work investigated the possibilities of immobilizing incineration fly ash by applying different processing methods. Direct sintering of fly ash at 1050 degrees C produced material with increased resistance to leaching; however, the high content of halides prevented the achievement of appropriate strength. Fly ash melting and casting into metallic moulds resulted in the formation of glass with good chemical resistivity and mechanical properties, which were further improved by devitrification, and the formation of glass-ceramics. The most successful combination of strength and resistance to leaching was obtained by a process consisting of fly ash melting, by pouring the melt into water, then grinding, and sintering without additives at 850-950 degrees C. In this way, a material was produced that cannot only be landfilled as a stabilised and non-reactive waste in landfills for non-hazardous wastes, but can also be utilized as a valuable material for manufacturing useful products. This article provided valuable results for policy-makers in Slovenia, about the handling fly ash from incineration plants. Implications: Fly ash from an incineration plant was thermally treated using several processing routes. Ash-melting, by pouring the melt into water and sintering, produced glass-ceramics having an optimal combination of strength and resistance to leaching that can find applications as useful products. These results provide important data for policy makers in Slovenia regarding the building of incineration plants, and handling the solid-waste products, especially fly ash.  相似文献

Chlorophenols, like many other synthetic compounds, are persistent problem in industrial areas. These compounds are easily degraded in certain natural environments where the top soil is organic. Some studies suggest that mineral soil contaminated with organic compounds is rapidly remediated if it is mixed with organic soil. We hypothesized that organic soil with a high degradation capacity even on top of the contaminated mineral soil enhances degradation of recalcitrant chlorophenols in the mineral soil below. We first compared chlorophenol degradation in different soils by spiking pristine and pentachlorophenol-contaminated soils with 2,4,6-trichlorophenol in 10-L buckets. In other experiments, we covered contaminated mineral soil with organic pine forest soil. We also monitored in situ degradation on an old sawmill site where mineral soil was either left intact or covered with organic pine forest soil. 2,4,6-Trichlorophenol was rapidly degraded in organic pine forest soil, but the degradation was slower in other soils. If a thin layer of the pine forest humus was added on top of mineral sawmill soil, the original chlorophenol concentrations (high, ca. 70 μg g?1, or moderate, ca. 20 μg g?1) in sawmill soil decreased by >40 % in 24 days. No degradation was noticed if the mineral soil was kept bare or if the covering humus soil layer was sterilized beforehand. Our results suggest that covering mineral soil with an organic soil layer is an efficient way to remediate recalcitrant chlorophenol contamination in mineral soils. The suppression of corona by particle space-charge is of considerable importance in electrostatic precipitators dealing with medium to high concentrations of particulates. However, the effect of the dust concentration on collection efficiency has found no direct answer in the literature. In addition to the expected reduction in corona current due to low mobility dust particles, the presence of these charged particles has two other main effects: 1. The electric field in the vicinity of the discharge electrode is weakened and hence the concentration of ions originating in the ionization zone and forming the charging current is decreased. 2. The resulting space-charge build-up causes an increase in the field strength adjacent to the collecting surface of the precipitator. The importance of each of these effects on the collection efficiency will be dependent on the relative decrease in particle charge as compared to the increase in the collection field. Experiments were carried out under both positive and negative corona with aerosol concentrations having specific surfaces in the range 0 to 44 m2/m3. These results showed: 1. For low values of corona current densities, as the specific surface area increases, the efficiency decreases. In this cqse, the charge per particle decreases as the particle concentration increases and becomes far below the normal charge attainable. Here the increase in the collection field is more than counteracted by the jarge reduction in particle charge. 2. For higher values of initial corona current densities, as the particle specific surface area increases, the efficiency either increases slightly or stays constant, in spite of major reductions in the measured corona current. In this case there should also be a reduction in the charge per particle with the increase in particle concentration, however, this is apparently offset by the increase in the collection field strength. Analysis of the results, coupled with an interpretation of existing theories, indicates that a major parameter that must be considered is the ratio of the initial corona current density and the specific surface of the particles.  相似文献

Demands for high performance and reliability of electrostatic precipitators for collection of fly ash from low sulfur fuels has led to rapid escalation of sizes and uncertainties in sizings of cold-side precipitators. This has led to utilization of the so-called “hot-side” precipitator. The underlying concept of hot-side precipitation is the avoidance of the necessity to operate the precipitator under high resistivity conditions. Data on in-situ measurements of resistivity of low sulfur fuel ash, as well as performance parameters of a number of operating installations, will be reviewed. These data will demonstrate the reduced sensitivity of hot-side precipitator sizing to fuel conditions. Other advantages of hot-side precipitators will be discussed.

Operating experience with hot-side precipitators has focused on structural problems which are peculiar to the larger, higher temperature installations. The nature and solution of these problems will be discussed. General comparative economics of hot-side and cold-side precipitators as they relate to fuel properties will be reviewed.  相似文献

The design, operation, and application of conventional high voltage power supplies in this process are reviewed. Emphasis is on requirements and methods of achieving the high performance and reliability necessary in modern air pollution control systems. This study systematically investigates the characteristic degradation behaviors of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) by the streamer corona discharge process (SCDP) in water. The analysis of the oxidized intermediates of DMSO shows that hydroxyl radical (*OH) is the main oxidant responsible for the degradation of DMSO in the SCDP. The various experiments on the degradation and mineralization of DMSO, and the effect of the *OH scavenger suggest that the SCDP produces locally concentrated *OHs in and around the plasma channel. This explanation was also supported by the formation of H(2)O(2) and the effect of the *OH scavenger on the H(2)O(2) production rate in the SCDP. Based on the kinetic data for the degradation of DMSO and the production of H(2)O(2) in the SCDP, the volume of the active region in which the *OHs are concentrated, and the effective concentration of *OH in that region were estimated to be 0.21 microl and 5.0 x 10(-3)M, respectively. This level of *OH concentration in the SCDP is approximately 10(7)-10(9) times higher than that generated in ordinary advanced oxidation processes using *OH. The ramifications of the results obtained in this study on successful water treatment using the SCDP are also discussed.  相似文献

This paper describes a versatile experimental facility for evaluating the collection of high resistivity fly ash by advanced electrostatic precipitator designs at near full scale. The unit will operate on a slipstream of up to 424 m3/min (15,000 acfm) from a boiler firing pulverized low sulfur Western coal with an ash resistivity of 1013 ohm-cm at 149°C (300°F). The test unit is designed so that if can be configured as either a single-stage or a two-stage unit and allows for easy installation of different charger and collector components for evaluation. A dampered heat exchanger provides control over the gas temperature from 93°C (200°F) to 370°C (700°F) so that tests can be run at either hot-side or cold-side conditions. Support equipment includes a gas circulating fan, venturi meter for measurement and control of the flow, an instrumentation trailer housing a computerized system for data collection and control of the ESP, and a gas analysis trailer and particulate sampling station for a comprehensive evaluation of the system.  相似文献

Membrane collection surfaces, developed and patented by researchers at Ohio University, were used to replace steel plates in a dry electrostatic precipitator (ESP). Such replacement facilitates tension-based rapping, which shears the adhered particle layer from the collector surface more effectively than hammer-based rapping. Tests were performed to measure the collection efficiency of the membranes and to quantify the potential improvements of this novel cleaning technique with respect to re-entrainment. Results indicate that even semiconductor materials (e.g., carbon fibers) collect ash nearly as efficiently as steel plates, potentially indicating that collection surface resistivity is primarily dictated by the accumulated ash layer and not by the underlying plate conductivity. In addition, virtually all sheared particles separated from the collecting membranes fell within the boundary layer of the membrane, indicating extremely low potential for re-entrainment.  相似文献

Emitted pollutants from the Agios Dimitrios lignite-fired power plant in northern Greece show a very strong linear correlation with the free calcium oxide content of the lignite ash. Dust (fly ash) emissions are positively correlated to free calcium oxide content, whereas sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions are negatively correlated. As a result, at present, the Agios Dimitrios Power Plant operates very strictly within the legislative limits on atmospheric particulate emission. In the present study, the factors to be considered in assessing the impact of lignite combustion on the environment are presented and evaluated statistically. The ash appears to have a remarkable SO2 natural dry scrubbing capability when the free calcium oxide content ranges between 4 and 7%. Precipitator operating problems attributable to high ash resistivity can be overcome by injecting sulfur trioxide to reduce the ash resistivity, with, of course, a probable increase in operating costs.  相似文献
