This paper presents an experimental investigation of the effects of impaction substrate designs and material in reducing particle bounce and reentrainment. Particle collection without coating by using combinations of different impaction substrate designs and surface materials was conducted using a personal particle sampler (PPS) developed by the University of Southern California. The PPS operates at flow rate of 4 l min-1 with a 50% cutpoint of approximately 0.9 μm in aerodynamic diameter. The laboratory results showed that the PPS collection efficiency for particles larger than 50% cutpoint is strikingly low (e.g., less than 50%) when an uncoated open cavity made of aluminum was used as an impaction substrate. The collection efficiency gradually increased when Teflon tape, Nuclepore, and glass fiber filters were used as impaction surfaces, respectively. Conical or partially enclosed cavity substrate designs increased collection efficiency of particles of 9 μm up to 80–90%. A conical cavity with glass fiber filter used as impaction surface was identified as the optimum configuration, resulting in a collection efficiency of 92% at Stokes numbers as high as 15.4 (corresponding to 9 μm in aerodynamic diameter). Particle losses were low (less than 10%) and relatively independent of particle size in any design with glass fiber filter. Losses seemed to increase slightly with particle size in all other configurations. Finally, outdoor PM1 concentrations obtained with the PPS (in its optimum configuration) and a modified micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) with coated impaction stages were in excellent agreement. The mean ratio of the PPS-to-MOUDI concentration was 1.13(±0.17) with a correlation coefficient R2=0.95. Results from this investigation can be readily applied to design particle bounce-free impaction substrates without the use of coating. This is a very important feature of impactors, especially when chemical analysis of the collected particulate matter is desirable.  相似文献

Abstract

The mass flux of a cloud of droplets heading towards a collector can be decomposed into its horizontal and vertical components. While only the vertical mass flux contributes to droplet deposition on a flat card by the mechanism of sedimentation, both flux components contribute to deposition on a sphere by both mechanisms of inertial impaction and sedimentation. Calculated collection efficiencies decrease as wind speed increases for cards but as wind speed increases for spheres, a minimum collection efficiency is reached at a certain wind speed. The average collection efficiencies, as measured in the field trial portion of this study, are highly linearly correlated with wind speed for cards. For spheres, however, no correlation was found between the average collection efficiency and wind speed.  相似文献

Abstract

Dust collection efficiency data were analyzed to determine better operating conditions for a two-dimensional circulating granular bed filter (CGBF). The dust collection efficiency in the granular bed was affected by the following operating parameters: the louver angle, the solids mass flow rate, and the particle size of the bed material. Experimental results showed that higher dust collection efficiency occurs when the solids mass flow rates were 20.34 ± 0.24, 21.50 ± 0.11, and 30.51 ± 0.57 g/sec at louver angles of 45°, 30°, and 20°, respectively. Optimal dust collection efficiency peaked with a louver angle of 30°. Average particle sizes of bed material by sieve diameters (μm) of 795 μm had higher dust collection efficiency than the average collector particle size of 1500 μm. Dust collection efficiency is influenced by bed material attrition phenomenon, causing dust collection efficiency to decrease rapidly. The dust collection efficiency analysis not only found the system free of design defects but also assisted in the operation of the two-dimensional CGBF system.  相似文献

This paper describes a versatile experimental facility for evaluating the collection of high resistivity fly ash by advanced electrostatic precipitator designs at near full scale. The unit will operate on a slipstream of up to 424 m3/min (15,000 acfm) from a boiler firing pulverized low sulfur Western coal with an ash resistivity of 1013 ohm-cm at 149°C (300°F). The test unit is designed so that if can be configured as either a single-stage or a two-stage unit and allows for easy installation of different charger and collector components for evaluation. A dampered heat exchanger provides control over the gas temperature from 93°C (200°F) to 370°C (700°F) so that tests can be run at either hot-side or cold-side conditions. Support equipment includes a gas circulating fan, venturi meter for measurement and control of the flow, an instrumentation trailer housing a computerized system for data collection and control of the ESP, and a gas analysis trailer and particulate sampling station for a comprehensive evaluation of the system.  相似文献

Abstract

This investigation numerically examined the cutoff aerodynamic diameter (da50) and the sharpness (GSD) of the particle collection efficiency curve of impactors with a finite impaction plate diameter. Results revealed that the inertial impactors have a limited cutoff aerodynamic diameter at different air velocities. The extreme value of the cutoff aerodynamic diameter increases with the nozzle diameter (W)/the plate diameter (Dc). The computed da50/Dc values of the impactors increase with W/Dc at various Reynolds numbers (Re) and with the nozzle-toplate distance (S)/Dc when Re is 100. The value of GSD slightly increases with W/Dc for Re of 10 and 100, although the effect of S/Dc on GSD is not evident at various Res. The particle collection efficiency curve of the impactor with a lower Re is less sharp than that with a high Re at various W/Dc and S/Dc values. Statistical equations closely fitted the obtained numerical results for Res of 10–3000. The equations are useful for directly calculating the cutoff aerodynamic diameter and the sharpness of the particle collection efficiency curve for single round-nozzle impactors with a finite impaction Dc.  相似文献

The fine particles are considered a significant pollution problem. The wet electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) have advantages of efficient collection of the fine particles with lower pressure drop and eliminating reentrainment. The wetting properties of the collector surfaces have significantly important effect on wet ESPs’ stable and secure operation. The modified rigid collector (MRC) was modified by coating specific vinyl ester resin composites and loose glass fiber cloth over the conventional carbon steel in a certain way. The rigid collector surfaces before and after modification had been characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and interface tensiometer. The effect of operating temperatures on the wetting properties of the rigid collector surfaces before and after modification was investigated. The temperature range was 40~90 °C, and the wetting properties contained liquid holdup, surface flow rate, film rate, average film thickness, and critical saturation time. The modified rigid collector surface exhibited excellent wetting properties at the operating temperatures. The fine particles collection performance compared among the MRC, the conventional rigid collector (CRC), and the flexible collector (FC) in the wet ESPs was investigated. The effects of the applied voltage, the water film, corona power, and the specific collecting area on the fine particles collection were evaluated. The modified rigid collector provided high fine particles collection effect with lower energy and water consumption.

Implications: To improve the submicron particles collection efficiency and decrease energy and water consumption, the formation of uniform water film over the collector surfaces has been widely studied. The modified rigid collector was modified by coating specific vinyl ester resin composites and loose glass fiber cloth (ERGF) over the conventional carbon steel (CCS) in a certain way. The modified rigid collector surface exhibited excellent wetting properties. The wet ESPs by the modified rigid collector exhibited significantly higher particles collection efficiency than by the conventional rigid collector.  相似文献

The exact collection mechanism of a venturi scrubber has been unknown up to this time. Photographic stop-action techniques and glass venturi scrubbers have made it possible to establish where and how particles are captured and to speculate on possible gas removal possibilities. This report extends the knowledge of pneumatic atomization which is used in gas scrubbing and many other applications by providing further information on cloud-type atomization. Cloud-type atomization which is produced by pneumatic atomization of liquid streams (not drops) results in the formation of liquid droplets which appear to be less than 10 microns in diameter. These droplets coalesce and form clouds which move as single entities. Effective overall cloud diameters are determined to be a function of the velocity of the atomizing gas stream. The effective cloud diameters start at 170 [a and increase as throat gas velocities increase from 150 ft/sec. Throat velocities and liquid inlet nozzle diameters necessary to obtain water clouds of specific effective diameters can be estimated.

These large clouds are efficient impaction targets and stop most of the particulate matter within 0.5 cm from the throat scrubbing liquid inlets. High gas absorption is expected for the clouds of droplets because turbulent gas movement can exist inside and outside the clouds and the 10 μ droplets provide exceptional surface area.  相似文献

Abstract

The removal efficiency of granular filters packed with lava rock and sand was studied for collection of airborne particles 0.05–2.5 μm in diameter. The effects of filter depth, packing wetness, grain size, and flow rate on collection efficiency were investigated. Two packing grain sizes (0.3 and 0.15 cm) were tested for flow rates of 1.2, 2.4, and 3.6 L/min, corresponding to empty bed residence times (equal to the bulk volume of the packing divided by the airflow rate) in the granular media of 60, 30, and 20 sec, respectively. The results showed that at 1.2 L/min, dry packing with grains 0.15 cm in diameter removed more than 80% (by number) of the particles. Particle collection efficiency decreased with increasing flow rate. Diffusion was identified as the predominant collection mechanism for ultrafine particles, while the larger particles in the accumulation mode of 0.7–2.5 μm were removed primarily by gravitational settling. For all packing depths and airflow rates, particle removal efficiency was generally higher on dry packing than on wet packing for particles smaller than 0.25 μm. The results suggest that development of biological filters for fine particles is possible.  相似文献

Abstract

A laboratory-scale electrostatic precipitator has been designed and constructed in which the grounded collector plate has been substituted by a set of wire screens placed perpendicularly to the gas flow. Particles are deposited onto the screens by two mechanisms—electrostatic deposition and diffusional deposition—which act simultaneously. On the one hand, electrostatic deposition is effective for relatively large particles, but it is quite ineffective for the smallest ones because their charging probability in the corona field is too low. On the other hand, the diffusional collection efficiency of particles on fibers is high for small particles but low for the larger ones. Therefore, the simultaneous diffusional-electrostatic precipitation may become a useful technique for efficient filtration of particles below 0.1 μm. A preliminary experimental evaluation of this filtering device has shown that submicrometer particles with diameters down to a few nanometers can be collected with number efficiencies greater than 99%.  相似文献

A charging/collecting device for high-resistivity fly ash has been developed which controls back ionization by cooling the collector electrode internally with water. The device consists of parallel 6.0 cm pipes with corona wires suspended between the pipes. The pipes provide a simple means of interfacing with a cooling water system and also minimizing the collector area needing to be cooled. By cooling the pipes with 38°C (100°F) water, back ionization is eliminated and average field strengths of 7 kV/cm can be achieved with fly ash having a resistivity > 1012 ω-cm. Results of tests on an actual flue gas stream and plans for future testing are described. Initial tests using heated instead of cooled electrodes are described as well as other tests that lead to the present design. The results of tests with the heated electrode show the kind of improvements in performance that can be obtained when resistivity is controlled in only a small collection area.  相似文献

With a specially designed generator, producing an aerosol of concentration, chemical composition, and size distribution similar to incinerator aerosols, a scrubber was tested in the laboratory by sampling before and after the collector. Using an Andersen Sampler as a 7 stage cascade impactor the efficiency for 7 different size classes was determined. This technique provides a rapid and simple method for evaluating the performance of a collector as a function of particle size. The multistage impaction classifies the particles according to their aerodynamic behavior. Gravimetric analysis of each stage eliminates the need for tedious counting and sizing.  相似文献

This article describes the development of a high volume cascade impactor with a sampling rate of 20 ft3/min that can be powered by high volume blowers in common use for air sampling. With this impactor it is now possible to collect enough sample of atmospheric particulates in a 24 hour period to conveniently determine an aerodynamic size distribution of suspended particulates by gravimetric analysis. The impactor has four stages and an after-filter and separates particles from the air stream by inertial impaction. The effective cutoff diameters for the stages are 7.0, 3.3, 2.0, and 1.1 microns. The after-filter traps the submicron material.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A conventional impactor for a particle speciation sampler was developed and validated through laboratory and field tests. The speciation sampler consists of the following components: a PM2.5 conventional impactor that removes particles larger than 2.5 μm, an all-glass, coated honeycomb diffusion denuder, and a 47-mm filter pack. The speciation sampler can operate at two different sampling rates: 10 and 16.7 L/min. An experimental characterization of the impactor’s performance was conducted. The impactor’s collection efficiency was examined as a function of critical design parameters such as Reynolds number, the distance from the nozzle exit to the impac-tion plate, and the impaction substrate coating method. The bounce of particles larger than the cut point was successfully minimized by using a greased surface as the im-paction substrate. Additionally, a series of field intercomparison experiments were conducted at both 10 and 16.7 L/min airflow. PM2.5 mass and SO4 2- concentrations were measured and compared with the Federal Reference Method (FRM) and found to be in good agreement. Results of the laboratory chamber tests also indicated that the impactor’s performance was in good agreement with the FRM.  相似文献

The paper presents a theoretical model of particle deposition on a single solid sphere in a three dimensional flow field of an incompressible fluid at Reynolds numbers from 200 to 106. The results show collection efficiency fluctuations in time, a factor not previously demonstrated. It is also shown that at low Stokes numbers, the assumptions of axisymmetric and steady flow are particularly poor and therefore, simple two dimensional filtration models used in the literature are not adequate for this case.  相似文献

The recently developed York Type P acid mist scrubber collects phosphoric acid mists and other very fine liquid particulates with very high efficiency with moderate pressure drop and high throughput. The collector consists of a single vessel containing two stainless steel wire mesh contactors. The collector converts submicron size acid mist into larger liquid particles which are collected and separated from the gas stream before being discharged from the collector. The first commercial unit started operation in July 1964, and four additional units have since been installed. Collection efficiency is 99.9+% at a pressure drop of 35-40 in W.G. The scrubber is compact and has no moving parts. Collected acid drains by gravity to a receiving tank. Experimental development work is described and design parameters such as efficiency, gas velocity, and pressure drop are discussed.  相似文献

The body of information presented In this paper is directed to those Individuals involved In research on, or the design of, electrostatic precipitators. A model for calculating collection efficiencies— one based solely on physical principles and, as a result, one requiring no prior Information from pilot plant or field testing—has been employed to generate performance curves for twelve Industries presently using electrostatic precipitators. These industries Include the electric power, cement, pulp and paper, steel, chemical, and petroleum industries. The performance curves describe the predicted collection efficiency as a function of preclpltator length, plate-to-plate spacing and average field strength, and are presented In graphical, tabular, and equation form. Wherever literature values for a particular Industry are available, comparisons are made between the collection efficiencies generated by the new model and those based on actual preclpltator performance. The two are generally found to be In reasonable agreement.

The use of the Deufsch-Anderson model for preclpltator design Is also discussed. Results from the new model demonstrate that collection efficiency Is sensitive to particle size distribution, a complication that cannot be easily treated In the Deutsch-Ander-son equation which, In Its unmodified form, requires the use of a single representative particle size. It is concluded that the new model Is potentially a more realistic and viable approach to the prediction of collection efficiencies and as such should prove to be a valuable aid in electrostatic preclpltator design.  相似文献
