Organically modified montmorillonite clays were incorporated at a 5% loading level into film grade of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) using a variety of masterbatches based on either semi-crystalline or amorphous poly-(lactic acid), as well as biodegradable aromatic aliphatic polyester. The PLLA masterbatches and compounded formulations were prepared using a twin screw compounding extruder, while the films were prepared using a single screw cast film extruder. The thermal and mechanical properties of the films were examined in order to determine the effect of the clay and different carriers on the polymer–clay interactions. In the optimal case, when a PLLA-based masterbatch was used, the tensile modulus increased by 30%, elongation increased by 40%, and the cold crystallization temperature decreased by 15 °C, compared to neat PLLA. The properties improvement of PLLA films containing nano clays demonstrated the possibility to extend the range of biodegradable film applications, especially in the field of packaging.  相似文献

In this study, poly(l-lactide) (PLA) films were fabricated by melt processing and the plasticizing effect of hexadecyl lactate (HL) (0, 5, 7.5, 10, and 12.5 wt% on PLA were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, tensile, transparency, and water vapor permeability tests. The SEM analysis revealed that PLA with 10 wt% HL appeared uniform with extra small bumps, confirmed the interaction between PLA and HL. The thermal analysis revealed a glass transition temperature of 57.4 °C for neat PLA film, but the addition of HL elicited a decrease in the temperature of the peak (43.8 °C). The incorporation of plasticizer into PLA resulted in the increase of elongation at break, as well as the decrease of tensile strength and tensile modulus. Even though a decrease in transparency was recorded, the PLA/HL blend films appeared transparent by visually observation. The water vapor permeability of PLA/HL blend films increased with the increase of HL. The PLA/HL blend films could effectively extend the shelf-life of fresh-cut pears as the commercial low density polyethylene films. The results indicated that the properties of PLA films can be modified with the addition of HL and PLA/HL blend films could serve as an alternative as food packaging materials to reduce environmental problems associated with synthetic packaging films.  相似文献

We herein report the effects of the component ratio and method of blending on the synthesis of stereocomplex poly(lactic acid) (SC-PLA) based on poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) and poly(d-lactic acid) (PDLA) prepolymers. PLLA and PDLA were prepared by direct melt polycondensation of lactic acid (DMP). Combined with the dual catalyst system, PLA prepolymers with Mw more than 20,000 were prepared by DMP. PLLA was mixed by powder blending or melt blended with PDLA. It is revealed that melt-point and spherulite growth rate of SC-PLA is strongly dependent on the perfection of SC structure. The melt point of PLA can be increased by nearly 50 °C because of the particular strong intermolecular interaction between PLLA and PDLA chains. Solid-state polycondensation (SSP) is an efficient method to increase the molecular weight of SC-PLA, but it can have a negative effect on the regularity of linear chains of SC-PLA. Thermogravimetry analyzer (TGA) results show that SC structure cannot cause the delay reaction on the thermal degradation of PLA.  相似文献

The addition of plasticizers to biopolymer films is a good method for improving their physicochemical properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of chitosan (CHI) blended with two hydrophilic plasticizers glycerol (GLY) and sorbitol (SOR), at two concentrations (20 and 40 wt%) on their mechanical, thermal, barrier, structural, morphological and antimicrobial properties. The chitosan was prepared through the alkaline deacetylation of chitin obtained from fermented lactic from shrimp heads. The obtained chitosan had a degree of deacetylation (DA) of 84 ± 2.7 and a molecular weight of 136 kDa, which indicated that a good film had formed. The films composed of CHI and GLY (20 wt%) exhibited the best mechanical properties compared to the neat chitosan film. The percentage of elongation at break increase to over 700 % in the films that contained 40 % GLY, and these films also exhibited the highest values for the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of 79.6 ± 1.9 g m2 h?1 and a yellow color (b o  = 17.9 ± 2.0) compared to the neat chitosan films (b o  = 8.8 ± 0.8). For the structural properties, the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction analyses revealed an interaction in the acetamide group and changes in the crystallinity of plasticized films. The scanning electron micrographs revealed that all formulations of the chitosan films were smooth, and that they did not contain aggregations, pores or microphase separation. The thermal analysis using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) revealed a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 130 °C for neat chitosan film, but the addition of SOR or GLY elicited a decrease in the temperature of the peak (120 °C). In addition, the antimicrobial activity of the chitosan films was evaluated against Listeria monocytogenes, and reached a reduction of 2 log after 24 h. The plasticizer concentration of 20 % GLY is sufficient for obtaining flexible chitosan films with good mechanical properties, and it could serve as an alternative as a packaging material to reduce environmental problems associated with synthetic packaging films.  相似文献

In attempt to enhance the compatibility of NR in PLA matrix, and furthermore to enhance mechanical properties of PLA, PLA/NR blends with strong interaction were prepared in Haake internal mixer, using dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as cross-linker. The effects of dicumyl peroxide on morphology, thermal properties, mechanical properties and rheological properties of PLA and PLA/NR blends were studied. The results indicated that dicumyl peroxide could increase the compatibility of poly(lactic acid) and natural rubber. With small amount of dicumyl peroxide, the effect on NR toughening PLA was enhanced and the tensile toughness of PLA/NR blends was improved. When the DCP content was up to 0.2 wt%, the PLA/NR blend reached the maximum elongation at break (26.21 %) which was 2.5 times of that of neat PLA (the elongation at break of neat PLA was 10.7 %). Meanwhile, with introducing 2 wt% DCP into PLA/NR blend, the maximum Charpy impact strength (7.36 kJ/m2) could be achieved which was 1.8 times of that of neat PLA (4.18 kJ/m2). Moreover, adding adequate amount of DCP could improve the processing properties of blends: the viscosity of PLA/NR blend decreased significantly and the lowest viscosity of the blends could be achieved when the DCP content was 0.5 wt%.  相似文献

Biodegradable films were successfully prepared by using cornstarch (CS), chemically modified starch (RS4), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), glycerol (GL), and citric acid (CA). The physical properties and biodegradability of the films using CS, RS4, and additives were investigated. The results of the investigation revealed that the RS4-added film was better than the CS-added film in tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (%E), swelling behavior (SB) and solubility (S). Especially, the RS4/PVA blend film with CA as an additive showed physical properties superior to other films. Furthermore, when the film was dried at low temperature, the properties of the films clearly improved because the hydrogen bonding was activated at low temperature. The biodegradation of films was carried out using the enzymatic, microbiological and soil burial test. The enzyme used in this study was amyloglucosidase (AMG), α-amylase (α-AM) and β-amylase (β-AM). At the enzymatic degradation test, the GL-added films had an approximately 60% degradation, while the CA-added films were degraded about 25%. The low degradation value on CA-added film is attributed to low pH of film added CA that deactivated the enzymatic reaction. The microbiological degradation teat was performed by using Bacillus subtilis and Aspergillus niger.  相似文献

Effective sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2) by algae reduces greenhouse gases effect on global warming. Algae biomass or residual such as biomeal from algae biofuel processing can be judiciously used for industrial applications such as fertilizer, animal feed, and plastics. Conversion of algae into useful plastic materials can be accomplished by extrusion technology. During algal plastic manufacturing, up to 20% thermoplastic algal blends can be fixated into or encapsulated by a non-biodegradable polymer such as polyolefin, which is known to be resistant to abiotic or biotic degradation. As a result, CO2 that is captured by algae through photosynthesis is permanently stored in a form of biomass and will not be released back into the atmosphere. The extrusion of microalgae reported in this article is a novel process to sequester CO2 and at the same time it makes a good use of the algae biomass in plastic manufacturing. Mechanical properties of the thin plastic films containing microalgae are comparable to the neat polyurethane or polyethylene films. Injection molded articles containing microalgae are dimensionally stable. However, a lower tensile strength, especially elongation at break, is observed in comparison to the neat polypropylene.  相似文献

Amorphous and crystallized poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA-A and PLLA-C, respectively) films were prepared, and the proteinase K-catalyzed enzymatic degradation of UV-irradiated and non-irradiated PLLA-A and PLLA-C films was investigated for periods up to 10 h (PLLA-A) and 60 h (PLLA-C). The molecular weights of both the PLLA-A and PLLA-C films can be manipulated by altering the UV irradiation time. The enzymatic weight loss values of the UV-irradiated PLLA films were higher than or similar to those of the non-irradiated PLLA film, when compared with the specimens of same crystallinities. UV irradiation is expected to cause the PLLA films to undergo chain cleavage (a decrease in molecular weight) and the formation of C=C double bonds. It seems that the acceleration effects from decreased molecular weight on enzymatic degradation were higher than or balanced with the disturbance effects caused by the formation of C=C double bonds. After enzymatic degradation, a fibrous structure appeared on the spherulites of the UV-irradiated PLLA-C film. This structure may have arisen from chains containing or neighboring on the C=C double bonds, which were enzymatically undegraded and assembled on the film surface during enzymatic degradation. The results of this study strongly suggest that UV irradiation will significantly affect the biodegradation behavior of PLLA materials in the environment.  相似文献

Blends based on different ratios of starch (35–20%) and plasticizer (sugar; 0–15%) keeping the amount of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) constant, were prepared in the form of thin films by casting solutions. The effects of gamma-irradiation on thermal, mechanical, and morphological properties were investigated. The studies of mechanical properties showed improved tensile strength (TS) (9.61 MPa) and elongation at break (EB) (409%) of the starch-PVA-sugar blend film containing 10% sugar. The mechanical testing of the irradiated film (irradiated at 200 Krad radiation dose) showed higher TS but lower EB than that of the non-radiated film. FTIR spectroscopy studies supported the molecular interactions among starch, PVA, and sugar in the blend films, that was improved by irradiation. Thermal properties of the film were also improved due to irradiation and confirmed by thermo-mechanical analysis (TMA), differential thermo-gravimetric analysis (DTG), differential thermal analysis (DTA), and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). Surface of the films were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) image that supported the evidence of crosslinking obtained after gamma irradiation on the film. The water up-take and degradation test in soil of the film were also evaluated. In this study, sugar acted as a good plasticizing agent in starch/PVA blend films, which was significantly improved by gamma radiation and the prepared starch-PVA-sugar blend film could be used as biodegradable packaging materials.  相似文献

The effects of a polymeric chain extender on the properties of bioplastic film made from blends of plasticized polylactic acid (p-PLA) and thermoplastic starch (TPS) were studied. Joncryl? ADR 4370S, a polymeric chain extender, was blended with TPS and p-PLA at a level of 1% (w/w). A co-rotating twin-screw extrusion process was used to prepare films with various ratios of TPS and p-PLA. Mechanical and physical properties of films, including film tensile properties, surface energy, moisture content, hydrophilicity, moisture sorption behaviour and thermal mechanical properties were determined. During extrusion, films enhanced by 1% Joncryl addition demonstrated more desirable and consistent qualities, such as smoother film edge and surface. Addition of Joncryl significantly improved film tensile strength, 0.2% offset yield strength, and elongation, especially evident with the 250% elongation of 70/30 (TPS/p-PLA) film. Total surface energy of films was not significantly influenced by addition of Joncryl. However, the polar contribution to the total surface energy of 70/30 (TPS/p-PLA) film increased after the addition of Joncryl. The study showed that blending TPS with p-PLA transformed TPS film from being highly hydrophilic to highly hydrophobic. On the other hand, addition of Joncryl had limited effects on moisture content, water solubility, glass transition temperature and moisture sorption behaviour of TPS/p-PLA blend films.  相似文献

Effects of UV/photo-initiator treatments on crystal formation and properties of polylactide (PLLA) films are investigated. Camphorquinone and riboflavin photo-initiator solutions in methanol are employed in the treatment of amorphous quenched PLLA films. Results from FTIR, ATR-FTIR, DSC, XRD, and SEM show evidence of crystalline domain formation dispersed throughout the film. 1H NMR and GPC results suggest that the molecular weights of the polymer slightly decrease after the treatment. This indicates that the treatment leads to a diffusion of the photo-initiators molecules through the film matrix, resulting in a low degree of PLLA chain scissions, and formation of carboxylic acid and hydroxyl polar end groups. This, in turn, induces PLLA crystallization, which imposes profound effects on surface wettability and physical and mechanical properties of the samples. The process can be applied in optimizing properties of PLLA films with shorter treatment times, compared to other methods, which is suitable for use in various fields; especially those that require specific characteristics like biomedical, packaging and environmental applications.  相似文献

A hydrophilic copolymer, ethylene–vinyl alcohol (EVOH), was incorporated into the poly(lactic acid) (PLA) matrix to improve the barrier property of PLA through twin-screw extrusion rather than the typical coextrusion process. A chain extender, poly[(ethylene)-co-(methyl acrylate)-co-(glycidyl methacrylate)] (PEMG), was used to reduce the probability of the thermal degradation of PLA during melt compounding. Biaxial stretching was used to enhance the microstructure and barrier property of PLA-PEMG/EVOH films. Experimentally, PEMG considerably reduced the probability of the thermal degradation of the PLA-PEMG sample. Biaxial stretching increased the tensile strength and decreased the value of elongation at break of the PLA-PEMG/EVOH80 (PLA/EVOH 100/80) film. Because of the efficient blending of PLA/EVOH in the twin-screw extruder, the dispersion of EVOH in the PLA matrix revealed homogeneous dispersion with a domain size of 1–5 μm. EVOH effectively improved the water vapour transmission rate (WVTR) of PLA through melt blending. Blending PLA-PEMG with EVOH substantially decreased the WVTR from 250 cc—20 μm/m2-day-atm for neat PLA to approximately 65 cc—20 μm/m2-day-atm for the PLA-PEMG/EVOH80 film, a decrease of approximately 74 % compared with neat PLA. Moreover, the WVTR decreased further from 65 cc—20 μm/m2-day-atm for the unstretched PLA-PEMG/EVOH80 film to 6.3 cc—20 μm/m2-day-atm for the film stretched at a stretch ratio of 3.5 × 3.5 and at 100 %/s, a decrease of approximately 90 % compared with neat PLA.  相似文献

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) blends with different levels of chain extender were prepared and cast into films. The effect of chain extender on the mechanical, thermal and barrier properties of the films were investigated. With the inclusion of the chain extender, the compatibility and interfacial adhesion between the two polymer phases were significantly improved by a mean of forming a PLA–chain extender–PPC copolymer. Reactions between the chain extender, PLA and PPC were observed through FTIR study. SEM study also confirmed the improved compatibility and interfacial adhesion. The elongation at break of the compatibilized film with optimal amount of chain extender showed dramatic increase by up to 1940 %. DSC studies revealed that chain extender hindered the crystallization of the film which explained the decrease in both water and oxygen barrier when adding chain extender. PLA was found to be able to enhance both oxygen and water barrier of the blend as compared to neat PPC, while in the case of the blend with chain extender, oxygen and water barrier properties exhibited reduction at the beginning. However, when increasing chain extender concentration, these two barrier performance exhibited an upward trend. It was found that PLA/PPC blend showed much better oxygen barrier property than both parent polymers, which can be ascribed to the acceleration effect of PPC on the crystallization of PLA.  相似文献

Starch granules were modified with trisodium trimetaphosphate (TSTP) and characterized by P31-NMR, FTIR and DSC. Seventy-micron films were prepared from modified starch and polycaprolactone blends by solvent casting technique. Three different types of films—PCL (100% polycaprolactone), MOD-ST/PCL (50% modified starch and 50% polycaprolactone blend) and NONMOD-ST/PCL (50% nonmodified starch and 50% polycaprolactone blends)—were prepared, and their thermal, mechanical, and morphologic properties were investigated to show the increased performance of PCL with the addition of starch and also the effect of modification. It was observed that with the addition of starch the Young's modulus of polycaprolactone was increased and became less ductile, whereas tensile strength and elongation at break values decreased. Biodegradation of these films was inspected under different aerobic environments with the presence of Pseudomonas putida, activated sludge, and compost. It was observed that whereas P. putida had almost no effect on degradation during 90 days, with the presence of activated sludge, considerable deformation of films was observed even in the first 7 days of degradation. In a compost environment, degradation was even faster, and all polymer films were broken into pieces within first 7 days of degradation and no film remained after 15 days.  相似文献

The potential use of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate)/graphite nanosheets (GNS) as a biodegradable nanocomposite has been explored. PHBV/GNS nanocomposites films were prepared by solution casting at various concentrations of GNS—0.25, 0.50 and 1.00 wt% GNS. The films were exposed to artificial ultraviolet radiation (UV) during 52 h. The effect of GNS on PHBV photodegradation was investigated and compared to neat PHBV film. The artificial photodegradation induced changes in physical (weight loss), chemical carbonyl index by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal degree of crystallinity and melting temperature by differential scanning calorimetry and morphological scanning electron microscopy characteristics. Based on the results obtained from aforementioned analyzes it was verified that GNS inhibits the oxidative degradation of PHBV matrix.  相似文献

Weathering behavior of two types of enhanced-photodegradable polyethylenes was studied using FTIR spectroscopy, tensile property changes, and gel-permeation chromatography to monitor structural changes accompanying photodegradation. Changes in elongation at break and carbonyl index during degradation showed a strong correlation with the average molecular weight of the polymers. At the point of embrittlement, the highest extent of degradation measured using tensile properties, the number-average molecular weights for both polymers were in the 104 g/mol range. Facile biodegradation is not expected of polyethylenes of this degree of polymerization.  相似文献

A poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/polyamide 11 (PA11)/SiO2 composite was mixed from PLA, PA11, and nanosilica particles through twin-screw extrusion. The PLA/PA11/SiO2 composite was evaluated with tensile and Izod impact tests, light transmission and haze measurement, and isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization behavior determinations. The PLA/PA11/SiO2 (97.0/3.0) composite had approximately 10.8% less ultimate tensile strength than neat PLA, but it had greater ductility and approximately ninefold greater elongation at break. A dimple morphology was observed on the fractural surface of the PLA/PA11/SiO2 composite, indicating that the incorporation of PA11 and nanosilica particles increased the ductility of the PLA matrix. PLA with less than 3 wt% of PA11 and 0.5 phr of nanosilica particles had an Izod impact strength of 8.72 kJ/m2. PA11 and nanosilica particles effectively toughened this PLA polymer; they accelerated both isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization rates and increased the crystallinities of the resulting composites under isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization processes.  相似文献

This work aimed to prepare biodegradable thermoplastic elastomers based on NR/LLDPE/TPS ternary simple blends to achieve some exclusive properties, i.e., good biodegradability in terms of water absorption and weight loss after burial, together with reasonable mechanical and thermal properties. A comparative study on biodegradability and other related properties of NR/LLDPE binary and NR/LLDPE/TPS ternary blends was performed. It was found that increasing the TPS proportion decreased storage modulus and complex viscosity. In addition, the size of dispersed TPS domains in the NR/LLDPE co-continuous matrix increased with TPS proportion, while the mechanical properties in terms of 100% moduli, tensile strength, elongation at break, and hardness decreased. This might be attributed to decreased interfacial adhesion with increasing size of TPS domains. Furthermore, increasing the TPS loading in the blend reduced the temperatures for 5 or 50% mass loss (T5 or T50) and the degradation temperature (T d ). However, the biodegradability improved, in terms of increased water absorption and weight loss after burial in soil, with the loading level of TPS.  相似文献

The aim of the current work was to produce sodium alginate (SA) maltodextrins (MD) based functional films incorporated with phenolic extract of Azolla pinnata leaves fern (AF) by solution molding technique. AF with different concentrations (0.8, 1.2 and 1.6% w/w) were integrated inside SA.MD films. The resulted films were characterized to investigate the surface structure by scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermal disposal by (DSC), crystallization by X-ray diffraction (XRD), potential interaction by (FT-IR) and some mechanical properties. The SEM micrographs indicated that the higher concentration (1.6%) of AF extract caused development of wrinkles on the surface of films. And as a result, there were a significant decrease of elongation at break (EB) and tensile strength properties of films to 55.01 and 58.42%, respectively. By continues addition of AF extract to SA.MD films, the film thickness increased from 0.124 to 0.181 mm, the scavenging and antimicrobial properties were enhanced by the attendance of ferulic acid, rutin, thiamine, tamarixetin, astragalin, quercetin, chlorogenic acid and epicatechin inside extracts. Furthermore, the films solubility, swelling degree and water vapor permeability were decreased to 13.08%, 26.41% and 1.662?×?10??10 g H2O/m s p.a. The resulted films could be utilized as composite packaging material for different food applications.

In Costa Rica, a lot of pineapple (Ananas comosus) and banana (Musa AAA) agroindustrial residues are generated each year. These residues can be used to obtain l-lactic acid by fermentation, ultrafiltration and electrodialysis. Poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) is a biodegradable and renewable polyester with many industrial and biomedical applications. There is a growing interest to improve the energetic efficiency of the synthesis of PLLA, because the main issue to produce this polymer is the high productive cost compared with petrochemical traditional commodities. In this research, the synthesis of PLLA through two different techniques was compared: microwave-assisted and conventional heating. On microwave synthesis the best results were obtained using lower temperatures and lower reaction times than the conventional heated synthesis. The reaction time was reduced from 15 h by conventional heating to 4.5 h using microwave-assisted synthesis.  相似文献
