Laminarization of flow in a two-dimensional dense gas plume was experimentally investigated in this study. The plume was created by releasing CO2 through a ground-level line source into a simulated turbulent boundary layer over an aerodynamically rough surface in a meteorological wind tunnel. The bulk Richardson number (Ri*), based on negative plume buoyancy, plume thickness, and friction velocity, was varied over a wide range so that the effects of stable stratification on plume laminarization could be observed. A variety of ambient wind speeds as well as three different sizes of roughness arrays were used so that possible effects of roughness Reynolds number (Re*) on plume laminarization could also be identified. Both flow visualization methods and quantitative measurements of velocity and intermittency of turbulence were used to provide quantitative assessments of plume laminarization.Flow visualization provided an overall picture of how the plume was affected by the negative buoyancy. With increasing Ri*, both the plume depth and the vertical mixing were significantly suppressed, while upstream propagation of the plume from the source was enhanced. The most important feature of the flow revealed by visualization was the laminarization of flow in the lower part of the plume, which appeared to be closely related to both Ri* and Re*.Measurements within the simulated dense gas plumes revealed the influence of the stable stratification on mean velocity and turbulence intensity profiles. Both the mean velocity and turbulence intensity were significantly reduced near the surface; and these reductions systematically depended on Ri*. The roughness Reynolds number also had considerable influence on the mean flow and turbulence structure of the dense gas plumes.An intermittency analysis technique was developed and applied to the digitized instantaneous velocity signals. It not only confirmed the general flow picture within the dense plume indicated by the flow visualization, but also clearly demonstrated the changes of flow regime with variations in Ri* and Re*. Most importantly, based on this intermittency analysis, simple criteria for characterizing different flow regimes are formulated; these may be useful in predicting when plume laminarization might occur.  相似文献

The statistics of the fluctuating concentration field within a plume is important in the analysis of atmospheric dispersion of toxic, inflammable and odorous gases. Previous work has tended to focus on concentration fluctuations in single plumes released in the surface layer or at ground level and there is a general lack of information about the mixing of two adjacent plumes and how the statistical properties of the concentration fluctuations are modified in these circumstances. In this work, data from wind tunnel experiments are used to analyse the variance, skewness, kurtosis, intermittency, probability density function and power spectrum of the concentration field during the mixing of two identical plumes and results are compared with those obtained for an equivalent single plume. The normalised variance, skewness and kurtosis on the centre-lines of the combined plume increase with distance downwind of the stack and, in the two-source configuration, takes lower values than those found in the single plumes. The results reflect the merging process at short range, which is least protracted for cases in which the sources are in-line or up to 30 \(^{\circ }\) off-line. At angles of 45 \(^{\circ }\) and more, the plumes are effectively side-by-side during the merging process and the interaction between the vortex pairs in each plume is strong. Vertical asymmetry is observed between the upper and the lower parts of the plumes, with the upper part having greater intermittency (i.e. the probability that no plume material is present) and a more pronounced tail to the concentration probability distribution. This asymmetry tends to diminish at greater distances from the source but occurs in both buoyant and neutral plumes and is believed to be associated with the ‘bending-over’ of the emission in the cross-flow and the vortex pair that this generates. The results allowed us to identify three phases in plume development. The first, very near the stack, is dominated by turbulence generated within the plume and characterised by concentration spectra with distinct peaks corresponding to scales comparable with those of the counter-rotating vortex pair. A second phase follows at somewhat greater distances downwind, in which there are significant contributions to the concentration fluctuations from both the turbulence internal to the plume and the external turbulence. The third phase is one in which the concentration fluctuations appear to be controlled by the external turbulence present in the ambient flow.  相似文献

This paper presents a large eddy simulation of mass transfer in the flow around a surface-mounted finite-height circular cylinder. The study was carried out for a cylinder with height-to-diameter ratio of 2.5 and a Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter of 44000. The approach flow boundary layer had a thickness of about 10% of the cylinder height. A tracer was released at various levels upstream of the cylinder. The effect of the release position in the subsequent spreading and dilution of the plumes is analyzed. It is found that a tracer released at the top or at mid-height is entrained into the recirculation zone behind the cylinder, and therefore presents similar plume evolution in the far wake in both cases. If the tracer is released at around three-quarters of the height of the cylinder, it is not significantly entrained by the main recirculation region, leading to smaller rates of spreading of the plume. Finally, if the tracer is released near the floor, the plume is entrained by the horseshoe vortex that wraps around the cylinder, leading to a large lateral spreading of the plume, remaining always near the floor.  相似文献

This article presents the theoretical motivation, implementation approach, and example validation results for a computationally efficient plume simulation model, designed to replicate both the short-term time signature and long-term exposure statistics of a chemical plume evolving in a turbulent flow. Within the resulting plume, the odor concentration is intermittent with rapidly changing spatial gradient. The model includes a wind field defined over the region of interest that is continuous, but which varies with location and time in both magnitude and direction. The plume shape takes a time varying sinuous form that is determined by the integrated effect of the wind field. Simulated and field data are compared. The motivation for the development of such a simulation model was the desire to evaluate various strategies for tracing odor plumes to their source, under identical conditions. The performance of such strategies depends in part on the instantaneous response of target receptors; therefore, the sequence of events is of considerable consequence and individual exemplar plume realizations are required. Due to the high number of required simulations, computational efficiency was critically important.  相似文献

A variety of animals use olfactory appendages bearing arrays of chemosensory neurons to detect chemical signatures in the water or air around them. This study investigates how particular aspects of the design and behavior of such olfactory appendages on benthic aquatic animals affect the patterns of intercepted chemical signals in a turbulent odor plume. We use virtual olfactory `sensors' and `antennules' (arrays of sensors on olfactory appendages) to interrogate the concentration field from an experimental dataset of a scalar plume developing in a turbulent boundary layer. The aspects of the sensors that we vary are: (1) The spatial and temporal scales over which chemical signals arriving at the receptors of a sensor are averaged (e.g., by subsequent neural processing), and (2) the shape and orientation of a sensor with respect to ambient water flow. Our results indicate that changes in the spatial and temporal resolution of a sensor can dramatically alter its interception of the intermittency and variability of the scalar field in a plume. By comparing stationary antennules with those sweeping through the flow (as during antennule flicking by the spiny lobster, Panulirus argus), we show that flicking alters the frequency content of the scalar signal, and increases the likelihood that the antennule encounters peak events. Flicking also enables a long, slender (i.e., one-dimensional) antennule to intercept two-dimensional scalar patterns.  相似文献

The application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), particularly Large Eddy Simulation, for the modelling of buoyant turbulent plumes, has been demonstrated to be very accurate, but computationally expensive. Here a more basic, and therefore more generally practicable, approach is presented. Commercial CFD software is used to model such plumes using Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) turbulence models. A careful comparison is made between the numerical predictions and well-established results regarding the bulk properties of plumes. During this process, we are able to observe the well-known approximate Gaussian nature of the plume and achieve quantitative agreement with empirical plume spread coefficients. The use of numerical modelling allows for the investigation of the flow field and turbulence in those regions of the plume of most interest—the plume edge and near source regions. A comprehensive sensitivity study is conducted to identify the limits of applicability of this modelling approach. It is shown that the standard modelling approach of Morton, Taylor and Turner, which introduced the well-known entrainment assumption, pertains in a region well above the source region. At the plume edge, the levels of turbulence are contrasted with the value of the entrainment parameter. Finally, the effects of forcing the plumes with additional momentum at the source are considered, including the case of a pure jet. We show how these forced plumes eventually lose their momentum excess and tend to the behaviour of a pure, buoyant plume.  相似文献

This report describes the results of a multidisciplinary study of turbulent chemical plume tracking of blue crabs and autonomous agents. The study consists of a coordinated investigation of animal behavior, fluid mechanics, strategy simulations, and chemical sensing. The objective is to provide a comprehensive understanding of chemical plume tracking in a single biological system and to prescribe strategies that are effective for autonomous agents. The consensus of the study is that spatial variation in the plume, measured by sampling at multiple locations simultaneously, yields information that is useful for plume tracking. Behavioral investigations reveal that blue crabs demonstrate the ability to detect the chemical plume and use lateral movements to avoid losing contact with the odor. Blue crabs move rapidly towards the source, strongly suggesting that temporal comparisons of odor properties are not employed during navigation. Analysis of the concentration fields reveals that a spatial correlation between spanwise-separated sensors indicates the relative direction of the plume centerline over short time periods provided the sensor spacing is scaled appropriately relative to the plume. Similarly, simulations of tracking strategies reveal an optimal separation for the sensors at a distance roughly equal to the plume width; both smaller and larger sensor spans degrade tracking performance. The simulations further reveal an optimal sensor size above which the fine details of the concentration distribution are obscured and below which there is insufficient contact with the odor to enable effective navigation. Finally, analysis of the chemical signal shows that the frequency dependent correlation function between two (or more) sensors indicates the relative position of the source.  相似文献

Synthetic pheromones and other behavioral chemicals are used by land managers to prevent insect-caused tree mortality or crop failure in forest and agricultural systems. Currently, no method exists to continuously measure pheromone concentration or movement in real-time. To improve our understanding of pheromone fate and transport under different forest canopies, results from a set of surrogate pheromone (sulfur hexafluoride tracer) experimental trials were used to evaluate a simple, instantaneous, three-dimensional Lagrangian dispersion model. The model was designed to predict both instantaneous and time-averaged pheromone concentrations. Overall, the results from the model show simulated time-averaged arc maximum concentrations within a factor of two of the observed data. The model correctly matched the sharp peaks and narrow widths of the meandering plumes observed in the instantaneous data, however the magnitude of the instantaneous peaks was often under-estimated. This model and evaluation provide the basis for a tool that can be used to guide deployment of synthetic pheromones or other semiochemicals for monitoring, mass trapping, or disruption of mating or aggregation.  相似文献

Field measurements of salinity, wind and river discharge and numerical simulations of hydrodynamics from 1978 to 1984 are used to investigate the dynamics of the buoyant plume off the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), China during summer. The studies have shown that there are four major horizontal buoyant plume types in summer: Offshore Bulge Spreading (Type I), West Alongshore Spreading (Type II), East Offshore Spreading (Type III), and Symmetrical Alongshore Spreading (Type IV). River mouth conditions, winds and ambient coastal currents have inter-influences to the transport processes of the buoyant plume. It is found that all of the four types are surface-advected plumes by analysing the vertical characteristic of the plumes, and the monthly variations of the river discharge affect the plume size dominantly. The correlation coefficient between the PRE plume size and the river discharge reaches 0.85 during the high river discharge season. A wind strength index has been introduced to examine the wind effect. It is confirmed that winds play a significant role in forming the plume morphology. The alongshore wind stress and the coastal currents determine the alongshore plume spreading. The impact of the ambient currents such as Dongsha Current and South China Sea (SCS) Warm Current on the plume off the shelf has also assessed. The present study has demonstrated that both the river discharge and wind conditions affect the plume evolution.  相似文献

Summary. We tested the hypothesis that aggregation behaviour of the firebrat, Thermobia domestica (Packard) (Thysanura: Lepismatidae), an inhabitant of enclosed microhabitats, is mediated, at least in part, by a pheromone. Individual insects were released into the central chamber of a 3-chambered olfactometer and test stimuli were placed in lateral chambers. Paper discs previously exposed for 3 days to 10 female, male, or juvenile T. domestica were all preferred by female, male, or juvenile T. domestica over unexposed paper discs, indicating the presence of an aggregation/arrestment pheromone. In additional experiments, frass and scales from female T. domestica, tested singly and in combination, proved not to be the source of the pheromone. Physical contact was required for pheromone recognition, indicating that the pheromone arrests rather than attracts conspecifics. Arrestment by the long-tailed silverfish, Ctenolepisma longicaudata Escherich (Thysanura: Lepismatidae), but not by the common silverfish, Lepisma saccharina L. (Thysanura: Lepismatidae), to T. domestica exposed paper discs suggests closer phylogenetic relatedness between C. longicaudata and T. domestica, than between C. longicaudata and L. saccharina. Whether C. longicaudata or L. saccharina produce an aggregation signal, and whether T. domestica respond to this signal is unknown. Received 10 June 2002; accepted 30 September 2002.  相似文献

Summary. Host plant volatiles may be involved in the sexual communication of insects in several ways. In the pheromone-producing sex, these volatiles may affect pheromone production or release and, in the receptive sex, plant volatiles may have a synergistic effect on the attraction to sex pheromone. We conducted three types of experiments to determine if and how plant volatiles are involved in the sexual communication of Lygocoris pabulinus (L.) (Heteroptera: Miridae), the females of which attract males. In a one-choice cylinder bioassay, females were offered to males on two different plants, belonging to different plant families, i.e. potato leaves and goosefoot leaves, to determine if specific plant volatiles were involved in the attraction of males towards females. Females on potato leaves were as attractive as females on goosefoot leaves, but significantly more attractive than females without plant material. The latter result suggests an interaction between females and potato leaves. However, in two-choice flying and walking bioassays, using delta traps in a wind tunnel and a vertical Y-track olfactometer, males were attracted to females irrespective of the presence of potato leaves. This difference in result is probably due to the fact that in the latter assays females were confined with pollen as an alternative food source, while females in the one-choice assay had access to water only, so that they may have suffered from malnutrition. Males in the one-choice assay were also attracted to potato leaves from which females had been removed, indicating that attractive components from females are deposited and adsorbed to the substrate. Plants are probably only indirectly involved in sexual communication, their surface merely functioning as a substrate from which pheromone is released. Males may subsequently be attracted to such plants or substrates. Clean plant material was not attractive to L. pabulinus males, hence plant volatiles alone do not seem to be used by these males as possible mate location cues.  相似文献

An analysis of concentration time series measured in a boundary-layer wind tunnel at the University of Hamburg is presented. The measurements were conducted with a detailed aerodynamic model of the Oklahoma City (OKC) central business district (CBD) at the scale of 1:300 and were part of the Joint Urban 2003 (JU2003) project. Concentration statistics, as well as concentration probability density (PDF) and exceedance probability (EDF) functions were computed for street- and roof-level sites for three different wind directions. Taking into account the different length scales and wind speeds in the wind-tunnel (WT) and full-scale experiments, dimensionless concentrations and a dimensionless time scale are computed for the comparison with data from the JU2003 full-scale tracer experiments, conducted in OKC in 2003. Using such dimensionless time, the WT time series cover a ~20 times longer time span than the JU2003 full-scale time series, which are analysed in detail in an accompanying, first part of this paper. The WT time series are thus divided into 20 consecutive blocks of equal length and the statistical significance of parameters based on relatively short records is assessed by studying the variability of the concentration statistics and probability functions for the different blocks. In particular at sites closer to the plume edge, the results for the individual blocks vary significantly and at such sites statistics from short records are not very representative. While the location of three sampling sites in the WT closely matched the sites during the full-scale experiments, the prevailing wind directions during the JU2003 releases were not exactly matched. The comparison between full-scale and WT concentration parameters should thus primarily be interpreted in a qualitative rather than direct quantitative sense. Given the differences in mean wind directions and concerns about the representativeness of full-scale concentration statistics, the WT and full-scale results compared well. The 98 percentile concentrations for almost all full-scale releases analyzed are within the scatter of the percentiles observed in the block analysis of the WT time series. Furthermore, the concentration percentiles appear linearly correlated with the fluctuation intensities and the linear relationships determined in the wind tunnel agree well with full-scale results.  相似文献

The ability of many animals and insects to track a plume to its source is a particularly impressive feat when the fluid dynamics is considered. Inspired by this observation this research seeks to identify the information in a passive scalar plume suitable for developing robust and efficient plume tracing algorithms. The subject of this study is a scalar plume emanating from a point source in a turbulent boundary layer which has been modeled in a laboratory facility built specifically for this purpose. A coupled PIV-LIF technique is used to measure the velocity and scalar field in a time resolved fashion. This data set is analyzed and the convergence rates of five single-point statistics, suitable as kernels of plume tracing algorithms, are investigated. The experimental data shows that the scalar fluctuations over long downstream distances from the source are characterized by filamentary structures that lead to relatively slow convergence rates for any statistic that is based on mean concentrations. The scalar intermittency, however, converges rapidly toward its true value, in fact converging to a testable hypothesis for source location direction faster than the time scale of the larger scale plume meander.  相似文献

The rural atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) flow was reproduced in a wind tunnel at three different simulation length scales to investigate possible effects of the simulation length scale on flow characteristics. Performance of truncated vortex generators developed for part-depth ABL wind-tunnel simulations was tested in rural terrain exposure against the full-size Counihan vortex generators. A procedure to design the ABL developing above rural type terrain has been described. The 1:395 and 1:236 simulations were created as full-depth simulations, i.e., wind characteristics throughout an entire ABL were reproduced in the wind tunnel. The 1:208 simulation was a part-depth simulation, i.e., only a lower 70% of the ABL was experimentally modelled. The projected scaled-up ABL thicknesses are 395, 354, and 416 m full-scale in the 1:395, 1:236, and 1:208 simulations, respectively. Experimental results show similar trends in all three configurations not depending on the simulation length scale factor. This clearly indicates a possibility to physically, in the wind tunnel, reproduce the same rural atmospheric airflows at different simulation length scales.  相似文献

We develop a stochastic model for the time-evolution of scalar concentrations and temporal gradients in concentration experienced by observers moving within inhomogeneous plumes that are dispersing within turbulent flows. In this model, scalar concentrations and their gradients evolve jointly as a Markovian process. Underlying the model formulation is a natural generalisation of Thomson’s well mixed condition [Thomson DJ (1987) J Fluid Mech 180:529–556]. As a consequence model outputs are necessarily compatible with statistical properties of scalars observed in experiment that are used here as model input. We then use the model to examine how insects aloft within the atmospheric boundary-layer can locate odour sources by modulating their flight patterns in response to odour cues. Mechanisms underlying odour-mediated flights have been studied extensively at laboratory-scale but an understanding of these flights over landscape scales is still lacking. Insect flights are simulated by combining the stochastic model with a simple model of insect olfactory response. These simulations show the strong influence of wind speed on the distributions of the times taken by insects to locate the source. In accordance with experimental observations [Baker TC, Vickers NJ (1997) In: Insect pheromone research: new directions, pp 248–264; Mafra-Neto A, Cardé RT (1994) Nature 369:142–144], flight patterns are predicted to become straighter and shorter, and source location is predicted to become more likely as the mean wind speed increases. The most probable arrival time to the source decreases with the mean wind speed. It is shown that scale-free movement patterns arising from olfactory-driven foraging stem directly from the power-law distribution of concentration excursion times above/below a threshold level and are robust with respect to variations in Reynolds number. Flight lengths are well represented by a power law distribution in agreement with the observed patterns of foraging bumblebees [Heinrich B (1979) Oecologia 40(3):235–245].  相似文献

Submerged aquatic vegetation has the potential to greatly improve water quality through the removal of nutrients, particulates and trace metals. The efficiency of this removal depends heavily upon the rate of vertical mixing, which dictates the timescale over which these constituents remain in the canopy. Continuous dye injection experiments were conducted in a flume with model vegetation to characterize vertical mass transport in vegetated shear flows. Through the absorbance–concentration relationship of the Beer–Lambert Law, digital imaging was used to provide high-resolution concentration profiles of the dye plumes. Vertical mass transport is dominated by the coherent vortices of the vegetated shear layers. This is highlighted by the strong periodicity of the transport and its simple characterization based on properties of the shear layer. For example, the vertical turbulent diffusivity is directly proportional to the shear and thickness of the layer. The turbulent diffusivity depends upon the size of the plume, such that the rate of plume growth is lower near the source. In the far-field, mass is mixed more than twice as rapidly as momentum. Finally, plume size is dictated predominantly by X, a dimensionless distance that scales upon the number of vortex rotations experienced by the plume.  相似文献

This study focuses on the influence of emission conditions—velocity and temperature—on the dynamics of a buoyant gas release in the atmosphere. The investigations are performed by means of wind tunnel experiments and numerical simulations. The aim is to evaluate the reliability of a Lagrangian code to simulate the dispersion of a plume produced by pollutant emissions influenced by thermal and inertial phenomena. This numerical code implements the coupling between a Lagrangian stochastic model and an integral plume rise model being able to estimate the centroid trajectory. We verified the accuracy of the plume rise model and we investigated the ability of two Lagrangian models to evaluate the plume spread by means of comparisons between experiments and numerical solutions. A quantitative study of the performances of the models through some suitable statistical indices is presented and critically discussed. This analysis shows that an additional spread has to be introduced in the Lagrangian trajectory equation in order to account the dynamical and thermal effects induced by the source conditions.  相似文献

We carried out a field study of the plume discharged by a near-shore wastewater outfall near the Akashi Strait, Japan. Using an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler and a tow-body CTD, we measured the near-surface salinity and temperature fields in the region throughout an M2 tidal cycle. We filtered the data in T–S space to remove water masses other than the wastewater, and then used the adiabatic mixing assumption to calculate the concentration of wastewater in the far field of this plume. Averaging the T–S fields of repeated surveys over a time period during which the tidal regime did not change substantially, allowed comparison of the time-averaged plume with the analytical solution for a plume diffusing in both the horizontal and vertical dimensions. The resulting vertical turbulent diffusion coefficients agreed well with those resulting from Thorpe scales determined via a vertically-profiling CTD, as well as with the canonical value for open channel flow of D z = 0.067hu *. The corresponding horizontal turbulent diffusion coefficients, however, were two orders of magnitude larger than those typically observed in straight channels, and an order of magnitude larger than those observed in meandering rivers. This is likely a result of enhanced horizontal mixing due to barotropic eddies generated by the interaction of strong tidal flow with headlands and levees, as well as due to the time-varying nature of tidal flow, and baroclinic spreading of the buoyant wastewater plume.  相似文献

Wind erosion processes affect soil surfaces across all land uses worldwide. Understanding the spatial and temporal scales of wind erosion is a challenging undertaking because these processes are diverse and highly variable. Wind tunnels provide a useful tool as they can be used to simulate erosion at small spatial scales. Portable wind tunnels are particularly valued because erosion can be simulated on undisturbed soil surfaces in the field. There has been a long history of use of large portable wind tunnels, with consensus that these wind erosion simulation tools can meet real world aerodynamic criteria. However, one consequence of striving to meet aerodynamic reality is that the size of the tunnels has increased, making them logistically difficult to work with in the field and resulting in a tendency to homogenise naturally complex soil surfaces. This homogenisation is at odds with an increasing awareness of the importance that small scale processes have in wind erosion. To address these logistical and surface homogenisation issues we present here the development and testing of a micro wind tunnel (MWT) designed to simulate wind erosion processes at high spatial resolution. The MWT is a duct-type design—0.05 m tall 0.1 m wide and with a 1.0 m working section. The tunnel uses a centrifugal motor to suck air through a flow‐conditioning section, over the working section and then through a sediment collection trap. Simulated wind velocities range from 5 to 18 m s?1, with high reproducibility. Wind speeds are laterally uniform and values of u * at the tunnel bed (calculated by measuring the pressure gradients within the MWT) are comparable with those of larger tunnels in which logarithmic profiles can be developed. Saltation sediment can be added. The tunnel can be deployed by a single person and operated on slopes ranging from 0 to 10°. Evidence is presented here that the MWT provides new and useful understanding of the erodibility of rangelands, claypans and ore stockpiles.  相似文献

In the habitat of desert ants, Cataglyphis fortis, a constant wind is usually blowing during the daytime. When visiting a familiar food source, the ants steer some distance downwind of the feeder, rather than attempting a direct approach that might miss small food sources, in particular. In the downwind area, the ants pick up the odor plume emanating from the food and follow it upwind to the prey. This strategy saves considerable walking distance and time. The additional path necessitated by the downwind strategy is only about 0.75 to 2 m, depending on nest–feeder distance, while missing the food on the upwind side results in much longer search trajectories. During the initial three to five visits to a feeding site, downwind distance and length of the approach path are shortened notably, and the approach trajectory is straightened. Desert ants further exhibit considerable short-term flexibility in their approach. Experienced individuals are evidently able to decide upon leaving the nest which direction to choose toward the feeder, depending on current wind direction (that fluctuates slightly during the day). Notable changes in wind direction occur primarily overnight. For larger nest–feeder distances, the animals adjust their approach en route to the altered wind direction during their first foraging trip in the morning.  相似文献
