The ability of Morecambe’s three designated bathing waters to pass the EU Directive on Bathing Water Quality depends on the time of day when the sample is taken, the indicator organism tested for and whether the test uses the most strict (Guideline) or the least strict (Imperative) criteria. Morning and afternoon sampling for faecal coliforms, faecal streptococci and the pathogenCampylobacter was carried out monthly over the 1996 and 1997 bathing seasons. In the afternoons average faecal coliforms declined by 77% in 1996 and 87% in 1997 compared with the mornings, faecal streptococci by 79% and 83% and campylobacters by 66% and 86%. This decline in bacterial numbers between morning and afternoon was related to variations in water temperature and levels of ultraviolet radiation. All three bathing waters failed the Guideline criteria of the EU Directive on Bathing Water Quality. Using the Imperative criteria, no bathing waters passed in the mornings of either year, some passed in the afternoons of 1996 and all passed in the afternoons of 1997. The increased pass rate in 1997 coincided with improved sewage treatment, high temperatures and increased levels of sunshine. In 1997 sampling by the Environment Agency produced fewer failures than our morning sampling but more than our afternoon sampling. Their sampling was done around midday. It is suggested that where possible all sampling of EU designated bathing waters should be carried out in the early morning.  相似文献

An incubation experiment was conducted to monitor effect of sewage sludge application on changes in numbers of faecal coliforms in soils over time after sludge application and evaluate the hygiene risks. Soil faecal coliform counts were made after 1, 7, 14, 28, 56 and 84 days of incubation. The faecal coliform counts in the sludge-treated soils decreased substantially with time and were similar to those in the untreated controls after incubation for 56 days. Land application of air-dried sludges increased the hygiene risks due to the re-growth of faecal coliforms, and the counts of faecal coliforms in soil treated with air dried sludge from Suzhou (91% DM) were 50 times higher than in soils with fresh dewatered sludge from Suzhou (15% DM) after 7 days of incubation. The main factors affecting the changes in faecal coliform counts were sludge type and incubation time. Sludge type determined the faecal coliform counts and the ability of the faecal coliforms to re-establish, and indigenous microorganisms competed with the faecal coliforms for nutrients during the incubation process.  相似文献

Theprevalence and seasonal variation of bacterial indicators of faecal pollution such as total coliform bacteria, faecal coliform bacteria, Escherichia coli and faecal streptococci were investigated in samples of water and beach sand from the four fish landing centres of Thoothukudi. Further the samples were screened for Salmonella to study the reliability of faecal indicator bacteria as an index of human pathogenic bacteria. Total coliform bacteria, faecal coliform bacteria and Escherichia coli were isolated from all four landing centres from undetectable to the maximum detectable level of over Most Probable Number 140 throughout the year with no obvious seasonal variation. Faecal streptococci were also detected in most samples. There was no discernable relationship between faecal indicators and physical parameters. The relationship between faecal indicators and Salmonella was not significant (p > 0.05). The results showed that the coastal waters along Thoothukudi is polluted and presents a potential risk to public for recreational and fishing activities.  相似文献

The concentrations of four types of antibiotics in the Yitong River were detected. The concentration of total coliforms in summer was higher than that in spring. There was a seasonal difference in antibiotic resistance of E. coli. The E. coli in the Yitong River was found to have multiple antibiotic resistance. The Yitong River is one of the largest secondary tributaries of the Songhua River. The area where the Yitong River flows is densely populated and contains the livestock and poultry breeding areas of north-east China. These areas introduce a high risk of antibiotic contamination. In this study, the concentrations of four types of typical antibiotics including quinolones, tetracyclines, sulfonamides, and trimethoprim were determined by solid phase extraction-high performance liquid chromatography. The antibiotic resistance of Escherichia coli caused by antibiotic pollution was investigated. The concentration of total coliforms in the Yitong River was detected by the plate counting method. The antibiotic resistance of E. coli to quinolones, tetracyclines, sulfonamides, and trimethoprim was analyzed by the Kirby-Bauer method. The results showed that the concentration of total coliforms in the summer was higher than that in the spring. There was a seasonal difference in the resistance rate of E. coli to antibiotics except trimethoprim. The antibiotic resistance to fluoroquinolones was relatively low. The resistance rate to tetracyclines was higher during the summer. Moreover, resistance to several antibiotics was observed in all sections. This study provides basic data for research on pollution characteristics and prevention of antibiotic exposure in rivers.  相似文献

Susceptibility patterns of 12 different antibiotics were investigated against rhizospheric bacteria isolated from Phragmites australis from three different zones i.e. upper (0-5 cm), middle (5-10 cm), lower (10-15 cm) in constructed wetland system with and without distillery effluent. The major pollutants of distillery effluent were phenols, sulphide, heavy metals, and higher levels of biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD) etc. The antibiotic resistance properties of bacteria were correlated with the heavy metal tolerance (one of distillery pollutant). Twenty-two species from contaminated and seventeen species from non-contaminated site were tested by agar disc-diffusion method. The results revealed that more than 63% of total isolates were resistance towards one or more antibiotics tested from all the three different zones of contaminated sites. The multiple-drug resistance property was shown by total 8 isolates from effluent contaminated region out of which 3 isolates were from upper zone, 3 isolates from middle zone and 2 isolates were from lower zone. Results indicated that isolates from contaminated rhizosphere were found more resistant to antibiotics than isolates from non-contaminated rhizosphere. Further this study produces evidence suggesting that tolerance to antibiotics was acquired by isolates for the adaptation and detoxification of all the pollutants present in the effluent at contaminated site. This consequently facilitated the phytoremediation of effluent, which emerges the tolerance and increases resistance to antibiotics.  相似文献

Heavy metals can act as co-selecting agents and promote antibiotic resistance. Most frequent resistances to heavy metals are observed for zinc and cadmium. P. aeruginosa and E. coli are commonly resistant to heavy metals and antibiotics. Heavy metals proliferate antibiotic resistance through co- and cross-resistance. Heavy metal and antibiotic resistances are common near anthropogenic activities. Antibiotic resistance in human pathogens can proliferate under selective pressures. Heavy metals in environmental reservoirs may contribute to selecting antibiotic-resistant strains. To determine the associations between heavy metals and antibiotic resistance, a literature review was conducted to systematically collect and categorize evidence for co-occurrence of resistance to heavy metals and antibiotics within human pathogenic bacteria in water, wastewater, and soil. In total, 42 publications adhered to inclusion criteria. Across the reservoirs, zinc and cadmium were the most commonly observed heavy metals associated with resistance to antibiotics. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli were the most commonly studied bacteria with reported co-occurrence of resistance to several heavy metals and antibiotic classes. As co-selecting agents, prevalence of heavy metals in the environment can proliferate resistance to heavy metals and antibiotics through co-resistance and cross-resistance mechanisms. In comparing different reservoirs, soils and sediments harbor higher heavy metal and antibiotic resistances compared to water environments. Additionally, abiotic factors such as pH can affect the solubility and hence, the availability of heavy metals to bacterial pathogens. Overall, our review demonstrates heavy metals act as co-selecting agents in the proliferation of antibiotic resistance in human pathogens in multiple environmental reservoirs. More studies that include statistical data are needed to further describe the exposure-response relationships between heavy metals and antibiotic resistance in different environmental media. Moreover, integration of culture-based and molecular-based methods in future studies are recommended to better inform our understanding of bacterial co- and cross-resistance mechanisms to heavy metals and antibiotics.  相似文献

Fourteen sampling sites distributed along the Abu Dhabi coast were surveyed monthly from October 1989 until September 1990 (except for the months February and April 1990), and a microbiological assessment was made. The saprophytic bacteria, salt tolerant saprophytic bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, total and faecal coliforms were determined. In general, the numbers of all determined bacterial groups were found to be correlated with each other and in most cases they fluctuated together. Furthermore, the bacterial flora of the coastal water is markedly affected by water temperature, sampling sites and sampling time. The bacterial content of most sites fluctuated maximally during August and September (late summer). The natural self-purification process of coastal water samples was clearly observed. The predominant saprophytic bacterial genera and the common coliform species which occurred in the study area were identified.  相似文献

Cellular freezing and chilling resistances of different marine bivalve species have been measured comparatively, using isolated pieces of gill tissues. The species-specific resistance values correspond to the ecological behaviour and the geographical distribution of the species. Among marine animals from subarctic and boreal regions, cellular freezing resistance is significantly higher in species living, during the whole year, in the upper littoral than in bottom dwellers or sublittoral forms. Tissues of tropical littoral bivalves are very sensitive to freezing. Similar responses are obtained in deepwater species of the temperate zone. Studies on geographically separated populations of species from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean demonstrate small differences in cellular freezing resistance; no genetically fixed distinctions could be recognized. Among species within the same littoral habitat, those suffering from mass mortalities in extremely severe winters also exhibit comparatively lower cellular chilling and freezing resistances. In littoral bivalves from normal sea water, considerable seasonal variations of cellular freezing resistance occur; such variations are very small in specimens from brackisk waters. Maximum freezing resistance results from adaptation to low temperature combined with high salivity. The adaptation time required for reaching the final level of resistance depends on temperature and salinity. Also, the considerable increases in cellular freezing resistance caused by exposure to air, or to oxygen-deficient water, or by different organic compounds, are modified by temperature and salinity conditions during pretreatment. The subtropical-tropical species Chione cancellata, exhibits “meaningful” adaptation of cellular chilling resistance when the adaptation temperature is changed from 10° to 23.5°C; however, no comprehensible change in cellular freezing resistance occurs at the same time. Increased calcium contents of the external medium affect cellular chilling and freezing resistances of marine bivalves differently. Quick effluxes of aldolase (from cytoplasm) and of acid phosphatase (from lysosomes) after freezing and thawing of isolated gills indicate damage to membranes before cellular injuries are recognized by microscopical observations. Partial inactivation of acid phosphatase by exposure to freezing and thawing is only found after “death” of the tissue.  相似文献

The species abundance, vertical distribution and diurnal vertical migration of cyclopoid copepods was analyzed in the central Red Sea in October–November 1980. Samples were taken to a depth of 450 m with a multiple opening — closing plankton net with 0.1-mm mesh-size. Selected important species were allocated to five different groups according to their depth distributions during daytime. The greatest number of species (9) was found in the lower epipelagic zone (40 to 100 m), below the strong seasonal thermocline. The lowest number of species (1) occurred in the upper part of the upper mesopelagic zone (100 to 250 m), which is characterized by a strong dissolved oxygen gradient. Five species had a bimodal vertical distribution, with dual peak abundances in the epipelagic and upper mesopelagic zones. Distinct differences in distribution patterns were noted between sexes and/or developmental stages. The vertical range of diurnally migrating species was small, usually less than 50 to 100 m. Characteristic diurnal changes in the vertical succession of dominant species occur within the epipelagic zone (0 to 100 m). Species-specific vertical distribution patterns are compared with published data from other areas. A conspicuous difference in the proportion of carcasses was noted between species: small species (<0.5 mm in length) had a much higher proportion of carcasses, usually between 20 and 40% of the total standing stock, than larger ones (<5%). The potential causes of this phenomenon, which may be due to (1) methodological bias, (2) a lower sinking velocity of small carcasses, or (3) a higher mortality rate of small species, are discussed.  相似文献

随着抗生素抗性污染日益严重,快速评估环境中典型病原菌与条件性致病菌的抗生素抗性水平,对掌握区域环境抗生素抗性污染状况、揭示抗性污染传播规律至关重要。通过以最低抑菌浓度浸入抗生素改进MI、VJ培养基,并结合滤膜法,建立了针对近岸海洋环境中指示性病原微生物大肠杆菌(Escherichia coli,E.coli)与金黄色葡萄球菌(Staphylococcus aureus,S.aureus)的抗生素抗性监测方法。水体和沉积物样品抗生素抗性水平评估实验结果显示,该方法具有较好重现性(水体和沉积物中E.coli和S.aureus抗生素抗性水平的相对标准偏差分别为11%、8%)与准确度(水体和沉积物中E.coli和S.aureus的平均回收率分别为83.5%、68.4%;相对于CLSI药敏试验的偏离度为±0.1)。且与CLSI药敏实验相比,该方法过程简便、耗时短(36 h/84 h),能最大限度节约经济和人员成本提高抗性评价效率。应用该方法评估辽河口与莱州湾环境中2种病原微生物磺胺类抗生素抗性水平,结果显示辽河口水体中E.coli和S.aureus磺胺二甲嘧啶的平均抗性率分别为27.0%、28.4%,沉积物中分别为35.5%、34.6%;莱州湾水体中E.coli和S.aureus磺胺二甲嘧啶的平均抗性率分别为26.0%、14.5%,沉积物中分别为12.0%、32.9%。该方法适用于河口、近岸海洋及入海排污口水体与沉积物样品中E.coli与S.aureus的快速分析及抗生素抗性水平评估。  相似文献

Earthworms highly increase ciprofloxacin mineralization in soils   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This report shows that earthworms increase up to eight times the mineralization of the antibiotic ciprofloxacin in soils. Antibiotics are extensively used and disseminated in environmental compartments. Antibiotics may enter food chains and thus induce resistance in environmental and human commensal bacteria. The antibiotic ciprofloxacin is suspected to induce significant adverse effects on soil microbial processes, with possible consequences on soil functions. Nevertheless, little is known concerning the fate of ciprofloxacin in soils. Here, we studied the mineralization and distribution of the [2-14C]-ciprofloxacin in soil–plant–water systems where ciprofloxacin was applied by amendment of spiked pig slurry. Results show that a very weak microbial mineralization of the antibiotic, lower than 0.01 %, occurred after 84 days of incubation. By contrast, the addition of earthworms increased from 5 to 8 times ciprofloxacin mineralization during the following 84 days incubation. In addition, earthworm activity induced the transfer of 40 % of radioactive compounds from the upper to the lower layer of soil, modifying the distribution of the antibiotic within the soil profile. We conclude that earthworms can be used efficiently to mineralize ciprofloxacin and modify its distribution in soils. As a consequence, earthworms change the exposure of soil organisms to ciprofloxacin, and, in turn, the eco-toxicological impact of the antibiotic.  相似文献

Reverse electrodialysis (RED) is an emerging membrane-based technology for the production of renewable energy from mixing waters with different salinities. Herein, the impact of the stack configuration on the Ohmic and non-Ohmic resistances as well as the performance of RED were systematically studied by using in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Three different parameters (membrane type, number of cell pairs and spacer design) were controlled. The Ohmic and non-Ohmic resistances were evaluated for RED stacks equipped with two types of commercial membranes (Type I and Type II) supplied by Fujifilm Manufacturing Europe B.V: Type I Fuji membranes displayed higher Ohmic and non-Ohmic resistances than Type II membranes, which was mainly attributed to the difference in fixed charge density. The output power of the stack was observed to decrease with the increasing number of cell pairs mainly due to the increase in ionic shortcut currents. With the reduction in spacer thickness from 750 to 200 µm, the permselectivity of membranes in the stack decreased from 0.86 to 0.79 whereas the energy efficiency losses increased from 31% to 49%. Overall, the output of the present study provides a basis for understanding the impact of stack design on internal losses during the scaling-up of RED.  相似文献

水环境中耐热大肠菌群的抗生素耐药性与质粒谱研究   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
用滤膜法、mFC培养基从5种水体中分离出疑似耐热大肠菌162株,用API微生物分析系统鉴定到种,以Kirby-Bauer法分析其对人畜常用10种抗生素的耐药性,碱裂解法小量制备各菌株质粒DNA做质粒谱分析.结果表明,埃希氏大肠杆菌为优势菌,占分离菌总数的96.3%.除分离自泉水的3株外,其它菌株都对3种及3种以上抗生素耐药,多重耐药率为98.1%.不同水体分离菌株对氧氟沙星、诺氟沙星、庆大霉素、丁胺卡那霉素、链霉素的耐药率有显著性差异(P<0.005).92株菌(56.8%)提取到大小为0.90~158.83kb、数量为1~6个的质粒,有81种质粒谱型.70株(43.2%)未提取到质粒的细菌中有67株为多重耐药.具有相同质粒谱型的菌株耐药谱都不相同.未发现质粒谱与抗生素耐药性间有明显相关性.图1表3参15  相似文献

Bacteriological water quality status in terms of total coliform and faecal coliform count was studied on both--east and west banks of river Yamuna in Delhi. Membrane filtration technique was adopted for enumeration of total coliform and faecal coliform count in the river water sample collected on monthly basis for 2 years--2002 and 2003. The study reveals the impact of diverse anthropogenic activities as well as the monsoon effect on the bacterial population of river Yamuna in Delhi stretch. Microbial population contributed mainly through human activities prevailed in the entire stretch of Yamuna river with reduction in bacterial counts during monsoon period due to flushing effect. Bacteriological assessment does not provide an integrated effect of pollution but only indicate the water quality at the time of sampling. Hence, this parameter is time and space specific.  相似文献

Maguire primrose (Primula maguirei) is a geographically restricted plant species, known only from a 19-km stretch of Logan Canyon in northern Utah (U.S.A.). We examined variation at 13 isozyme loci from 25 individuals of P. maguirei at each of eight sites. At individual loci we detected no statistically significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg proportions within sites (subpopulations). However, some loci were almost fixed for different alleles at the upper reaches of the species' range relative to populations approximately 10 km away. The total mean gene diversity among loci was 0.22, of which 55% was partitioned within subpopulations, 0.7% among subpopulations within populations (100 m spatial scale), 3% among populations separated by about 1 km, and 41% between an Upper Canyon group of populations and a Lower Canyon group (10-km scale). We detected no gametic disequilibria among loci within subpopulations (and populations). Two hypotheses are proposed to explain the results: (1) past genetic bottlenecks and (2) genetic divergence as a by-product of local adaptations to different habitats. Regardless of the causes of allozymic differentiation, our results suggest that plans for artificial establishment or reestablishment of P. maguirei populations should use source populations within 1 km of the establishment site. This study emphasizes the potential use of data on population genetic structure for managing and monitoring rare species.  相似文献

2015年世界卫生组织将抗生素的滥用列为21世纪最大的挑战之一,全球范围内抗生素抗药性的散播已严重威胁人类的健康。如何检测环境中的细菌抗药性,并有效评估抗药性感染的风险,是环境微生物研究的一项重要课题。本文通过改进的培养基微量稀释(broth micro-dilution)法,确定了2个地区(中国成都和美国夏威夷)不同环境来源(天然水系和市政污水)的大肠杆菌的抗生素最小抑制浓度(minimum inhibitory concentrations,MICs)。计算所得的MIC分位数(MIC50和MIC90)、菌体抗性百分比及多抗药性指数(multiple antibiotic resistance indexes,MARIs)显示两地不同环境区划的抗生素抗性存在明显的差异。天然水系(成都锦江)中的抗生素抗性是随时间可变的,与当地的降雨事件相关。环境菌株的抗药性模式通过聚类和非度量多维测度(non-metric multidimensional scaling,NMDS)进行分析。广谱β-内酰胺酶基因筛查显示出抗性基因与抗性表型之间的正相关性。结合现有的两地抗生素的使用数据讨论了两地环境抗生素抗性与当地人类活动及抗生素的使用实践之间的紧密联系。采集环境菌株抗生素MIC数据的实验及数据分析方法实现了环境抗药性的跨时空对比,为规范抗生素的区域性使用提供了指导作用。  相似文献

In addition to diet-based vectors of disease, the contribution of water-borne zoonotic agents to gastrointestinal illnesses may be significant, but this has yet to be investigated for Cyprus. Our main objective was to evaluate antibiotic resistance patterns of Salmonella and Escherichia coli in groundwater samples collected at confined animal feeding operations. This is the first report on the occurrence of antibiotic-resistant Salmonella and E. coli strains in the groundwater of Cyprus. Most of Salmonella isolates belonged to the subgroup enterica, whereas none of the E. coli isolates expressed the verotoxin-encoding gene. Out of 27 isolated Salmonella strains, nearly half of them were resistant to at least one or more antibiotic, whereas the highest resistance was exhibited by sulphamethoxazole (85%), followed by streptomycin (39%), and tetracycline (31%). For the E. coli isolates, nearly a third of them showed resistance to at least one antibiotic, whereas the selection of antibiotic resistance was equal among sulphamethoxazole, tetracycline and streptomycin (20%). This study demonstrated that Salmonella and E. coli in groundwater could pose a public health risk via oral ingestion of contaminated water. Best management practices are needed for overexploited groundwater supplies of rural areas, minimizing human exposure to antibiotic-resistant pathogens.  相似文献

The time course of faecal pellet production (egestion) was monitored in January 1985 for a population of Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba Dana, maintained in flowing seawater aquaria at Palmer Station, Antarctica. Following transfer to filtered seawater, krill produced faecal strings for roughly 40 min, after which time faecal egestion virtually ceased. Similar results were obtained for freshly-trawled krill at sea in February and March 1985. There were wide daily variations in total faecal egestion rate; mean rates varied from 0.54 to 1.66 mg dry wt h-1 and individual rates from 0.25 to 2.35 mg h-1 (all data corrected to a standard krill of 600 mg fresh weight). Despite these wide fluctuations in total faecal egestion, the loss of organic matter showed no significant daily variation, with a mean value of 0.13 mgh-1. The relationship between faecal egestion rate and faecal organic content suggested that feeding rate was governed by food quality; when inorganic load was high, feeding rate increased to ensure sufficient energy intake. The data suggest that superfluous feeding does not occur in krill and that values of gut-clearance time calculated from time intervals greater than about 40 min will not be representative of previous feeding history. the rates of faecal egestion observed in this study indicate that the flux of faecal pellets from krill is substantial. They imply an energy intake in E. superba of 17 to 28% body weight per day, much higher than estimated previously for this species by summing known energy losses, but similar to estimates for other euphausiids.  相似文献
