Filial cannibalism is hypothesized to allow nest-guarding males to recoup energy lost during nest defense. Males in many species of fishes occasionally defend broods containing both sired and foster eggs due to shifts in nest site ownership or cuckoldry. Such males are predicted to consume primarily foster eggs if the ability to discriminate among eggs exists. In a previous laboratory study, male spottail darters (Etheostoma squamiceps) consumed significantly more foster eggs than sired eggs, suggesting the existence of a mechanism for discrimination using chemical or positional cues. This discrimination mechanism in the spottail darter was tested by creating nest sites with half sired eggs and half foster eggs (n=15), or with all sired eggs with half positionally relocated (n=9). Males defended these nests for 2 days in the field, and cannibalism was determined by counting eggs lost during that interval. Neither foster eggs nor relocated sired eggs were consumed in greater numbers or percentages of the original brood sizes than the unchanged sired eggs, indicating that male spottail darters do not discriminate between foster and sired eggs by olfaction or position. Alternatively, the hypothesis that males treat all eggs in nest sites in which they have spawned as sired explains the results of both studies.  相似文献

In fish, fecundity correlates with female body size and egg-tending males often eat small broods. Therefore, small females may prefer to spawn in nests that already contain many eggs, to ensure the brood is as large as possible. In contrast, large females may prefer nests with few eggs, if high egg number or density has a negative effect on egg survival, or if there are drawbacks of spawning last in a nest. To test the hypothesis that female body size affects nest (and male mate) choice, using the sand goby (Pomatoschistus minutus), we allowed small and large females to choose between two males that were matched in size — one guarding a small clutch and the other a large clutch, respectively. We recorded where females spawned (measure of female preference), the combined brood size, male courtship, egg care and nest building. We also quantified the effect of brood size and egg density on egg survival in a separate data set. Although the combined broods did not exceed the small brood sizes that are at risk of being eaten, both small and large females preferred to spawn in nests with smaller clutch sizes. This preference could not be explained by more courtship or male parental effort, nor by reduced survival of larger or denser broods. Instead, our result might be explained by females avoiding the danger of cannibalism of young eggs by males or the risk of reduced egg health associated with being near the nest periphery.  相似文献

When parental care is costly, parents should avoid caring for unrelated young. Therefore, it is an advantage to discriminate between related and unrelated offspring so that parents can make informed decisions about parental care. In the present study, we test the hypothesis that male sand gobies (Pomatoschistus minutus) recognize and differentially care for their own offspring when given a choice between a nest with sired eggs and a second nest with eggs sired by an unrelated male. The sand goby is a species with exclusive and costly paternal care. Male parasitic spawnings (e.g., sneaking) as well as nest takeovers by other males are common. Our results show that nests containing sired eggs were preferred and received significantly more care, as measured by nest building and nest occupancy, than nests with foreign eggs even when males cared for both nests. These findings suggest that males respond to paternity cues and recognize their own clutches. Relative clutch size also had a significant effect on male parental care. When sired clutches were larger than foreign clutches, males preferred to care for their own nest. In the few cases where males chose to take care of foreign nests, the foreign clutch was larger than their own clutch. Taken together, our results provide evidence that both paternity cues and clutch size influence parenting decisions among male sand gobies.  相似文献

The differential allocation hypothesis proposes that females mated to attractive males should invest more resources in their offspring than those mated to less-attractive males, whereas the compensation hypothesis posits that females mated to less-attractive males should invest more resources in their offspring to compensate for lower-quality young. We tested these hypotheses by manipulating attractiveness of male house wrens (Troglodytes aedon) prior to female arrival by adding extra nest sites to territories of some males while leaving control males with only a single nest site. Females laid their eggs sooner in the nests of attractive males, and attractive males were more likely to retain their territory over successive broods and were marginally more likely to obtain a mate for a second brood later in the season than were control males, thereby confirming the effect of our manipulation on male attractiveness. Experimentally enhanced attractiveness also led to increased hematocrit in males. However, there were no consistent differences in the number, size, or quality of eggs laid by females mated to attractive and control males, nor were there any differences in the size, health state, or immune function of nestlings produced from these eggs. There was also no effect of treatment on the number of nestlings surviving to fledging. Collectively, these results are inconsistent with both the differential allocation hypothesis and the compensation hypothesis. Future studies should consider the possibility that the criteria used by females in selecting a mate may vary temporally and be more flexible than generally thought.  相似文献

Summary Nest predation was simulated by presenting a stuffed raven close to nests of merlins. This was done to examine the influence of brood size related factors on female defence intensity. The original clutch size did not affect nest defense after hatching, but brood size was important. It determined the attack frequency and, for each brood size level, the proportion of attacking females. When brood sizes were manipulated, the defense intensity increased and decreased, respectively, in relation to the size of the brood. In addition, broods with high future survival (first broods) were defended more vigorously than broods with low future survival (replacement broods). Hence, expected benefits in terms of fledgling production and chick survival seem to be important determinants of female investment in offspring protection. The lower predation rate among females responding with overt aggression to the raven compared to that of less aggressive females suggests that defence of young is beneficial.  相似文献

Summary In a Canadian population of tree swallows, Tachycineta bicolor, DNA fingerprinting has previously shown that half of all broods contain many offspring resulting from extra-pair copulations (EPCs), whereas the other half contain only legitimate offspring. This bimodal pattern of extra-pair paternity might be due to variation in the effectiveness of male paternity guards, variation in female ability to resist EPCs, and/or variation in female pursuit of EPCs. Here we report experimental evidence for female control of copulations and fertilizations and the occurrence of two alternative copulation strategies among females in this population. Ten paired male tree swallows were removed on the day their mates laid the first egg. Replacement males took over the nestbox within 0.5–23 h and attempted to copulate with the widowed female. Assuming that eggs were fertilized approximately 24 h prior to laying, the first two eggs were fertilized before the male was removed, while the third and subsequent eggs could potentially be fertilized by the replacement male. Fingerprinting revealed that the first two eggs were sired by the resident males in five nests and by extra-pair males in the remaining five nests. The widows that had been faithful to their initially chosen mate rejected copulation attempts by the replacement male until most of the eggs had been laid. Consequently, nearly all eggs laid by these females were sired by the original male. The widows that had been unfaithful prior to male removal copulated sooner with the replacement male than females that were faithful to their mate. However, these replacement males also had a very low fertilization success; most eggs were sired by males that were not associated with the nest. This is consistent with the situation in non-experimental nests where unfaithful females copulate with their mate at the same rate as faithful females, yet unfaithful females have a majority of offspring sired by extra-pair males. We conclude that fertilization patterns to a large extent are determined by the female through active selection and rejection of copulation partners, though our results also allow some speculation that females have control over sperm competition. A positive correlation between the parental effort of a male and female should promote stable biparental care. Risk-taking (as assessed by injuries) against infanticidal intruders by Nicrophorus pustulatus females was expected to be low when females had a low probability of successful defense of the young. I tested the hypothesis that when the presence of a male partner increased the probability of successful defense from low to moderate that female risk-taking would increase. Single females and pairs with first instar larvae were confronted by potentially infanticidal male and female conspecific intruders. Male intruders routinely took over nests from unpaired females (30 of 36 trials). Unpaired females and male intruders were injured infrequently, indicating less intense fights despite the high probability of infanticide. A resident female defending against a male intruder was injured more often when paired than unpaired, suggesting greater risk-taking. A male parent that delays desertion, therefore, receives fitness benefits not only from his own defense of the young, but from greater female defense against male intruders as well. It is hypothesized that the threat of infanticidal takeovers by males promotes extended biparental care in burying beetles. When the intruder was female, on the other hand, a female parent on her own had a moderate probability of successfully defending the brood (22 of 36 trials). The presence of a male partner against female intruders almost guaranteed successful defense (35 of 36 trials) and female intruders did not appear to contest pairs vigorously. Summary Female threespine sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) frequently raid male nests and eat all the eggs therein. We tested the hypothesis of Vickery et al. (1988) that females prefer to raid nests containing large numbers of eggs than ones with smaller numbers of eggs. This hypothesis is based on the finding that females spawning in nests containing many eggs will have reduced hatching success because of egg crowding. By consuming the male's eggs and forcing him to rebuild his nest, raiding females might obtain a new opportunity to spawn under better conditions. Our results were consistent with the first prediction of this hypothesis that females were more likely to spawn in nests containing fewer eggs than in nests with many eggs. However, this may be the result of males becoming less receptive to females as the number of eggs in their nests increases. Prediction 2 was that females should raid those nests containing the most eggs. Contrary to this prediction, males defending only one clutch were as likely to have their nests raided by groups of females as males defending several clutches of eggs. Female cannibalism is therefore unlikely to have evolved as a means of gaining access to a male defending a small number of eggs. We also examined the tactics used by males to counter female raids. Most raids occur when the male is courting, and nests are more vulnerable to shoals of females than to single females. Therefore, we hypothesized that males with eggs preferentially court a single female rather than large groups of females, and that males without eggs court both groups indiscriminately. We also predicted that males restrict the number of females they mate with when risk of having their nest raided is high. Our results indicate that: (1) both males with eggs and those without eggs minimize the risk of female cannibalism by courting solitary females rather than groups of females and (2) males limit the number of females that lay eggs in their nest when several potentially raiding females are present. Ornamental traits are thought to evolve because they give individuals an advantage in securing multiple mates. Thus, the presence of ornamentation among males in many monogamous bird species presents something of a conundrum. Under certain conditions, extra-pair paternity can increase the variance in reproductive success among males, thus increasing the potential for sexual selection to act. We addressed this possibility in the mountain bluebird (Sialia currucoides), a socially monogamous songbird in which males possess brilliant ultraviolet (UV)-blue plumage. Specifically, we asked whether a male’s success at siring offspring within his own nest and within the nests of other males was related to his coloration. In pairwise comparisons, males that sired extra-pair offspring were not more colorful than the males that they cuckolded. However, males that sired at least one extra-pair offspring were, on average, brighter and more UV-blue than males that did not sire extra-pair offspring. Brighter, more UV-blue males sired more offspring both with their own mate and tended to sire more offspring with extra-pair mates and thus sired more offspring overall. Our results support the hypothesis that the brilliant UV-blue ornamental plumage of male mountain bluebirds evolved at least in part because it provides males with an advantage in fertilizing the eggs of multiple females.  相似文献

Summary Sand goby, Pomatoschistus minutus Pallas, males need a nest site for successful breeding. The value of the nest increases with size, as larger nests can hold more eggs. In the field using artificial nest sites, takeovers occurred in 29.0% of the cases. The winning intruders were on average 16.3% larger than the owners. These, in turn, were significantly smaller than the nonreplaced males. Replacement probability increased with nest size. Prior ownership was of no importance in experimental situations, but might have affected takeover probabilities in the field. Males assessed the size of a potential nest site on the basis of its external appearance. When intruders and owners were given opposite information about nest size the experiments resulted in takeover rates of around 50% in situations where takeover rates were expected to be extreme. This suggested that intruders might update their information about a site's true value during the fight. The continuous assessment, in turn, might affect their motivation to continue fighting. On average, larger males were more active in initiating displays. However, smaller opponents challenged their larger opponents more actively when they were defending a large nest than when they were defending a small nest. The greater willingness to defend might provide the intruder with more information about the real value of the nest.  相似文献

Parasitic female moorhens (Gallinula chloropus) lay from one to six eggs in the nests of conspecific neighbours. DNA fingerprinting was used to show that parasitic eggs could be correctly identified when they appeared in addition to or outside the host’s laying sequence. Moorhen hosts accept all parasitic eggs laid after the 2nd day of their laying period. To understand why moorhen hosts tolerate parasitic eggs, we tested two hypotheses. (1) The quasi-parasitism hypothesis: females lay their eggs in the evening when the host males are normally in attendance at the nest, so host males may allow parasitic females to lay in their nests in exchange for fertilizing their eggs. However, DNA fingerprinting showed that all the parasitic eggs were sired by the parasites’ mates. Parasitic moorhens frequently continue laying a clutch in their own nest, without a break in the laying sequence after a parasitic laying bout. The eggs laid by brood parasites in their own nests were also sired by their own mates. Therefore this hypothesis was rejected. (2) The kin selection hypothesis: if one or both members of the host pair are close relatives of the parasite, the costs of rearing parasitic chicks will be to some degree offset by inclusive fitness benefits. We examined the genetic relationships between parasites and their hosts using DNA fingerprinting and genealogical data. Natal philopatry by both sexes was relatively common in this population, and the probability that a neighbour of either sex was a first-order relative (parent-offspring) was calculated as 0.18. Although first-order relatives were not preferentially chosen as hosts over individuals that were not first-order relatives, even through random host selection there is almost a one-in-five chance that brood parasites in this population are closely related to their hosts. The breeding success of many passerines is strongly reduced by egg predation. The adaptive significance of egg crypsis in open nesters is often taken for granted, but visually searching predators may first detect the nest or adult bird and not the eggs. Götmark predicted that selection should favour egg crypsis in the absence of conspicuous nests, whereas birds with conspicuous nests should have non-cryptic eggs. I compared the effect of egg colour treatment (white, blue, brown-spotted) on nest survival (1) among species characterized by different egg coloration, nest size and nest placement, and (2) between relatively well and poorly concealed nests within species. I used artificial nests (n=1,296) and eggs mimicking (except in egg colour) those of the yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella), blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla) and song thrush (Turdus philomelos). Concurrently, I monitored survival of real nests (n=1,106). Nest survival differed among species, increased with nest concealment and throughout the breeding season, but was not significantly related to egg colour in any species. Nevertheless, the data for the yellowhammer suggest a trend in survival rates across the colour treatments. Brown eggs survived better than white eggs by 11% and 4% in 2 years, but this study had insufficient power to detect effects of this size. The results thus suggest that egg coloration in the song thrush and blackcap (shrub nesters) may be a neutral trait with regard to nest predation, whereas egg crypsis may be an anti-predation feature for the yellowhammer (ground/near-ground nester). The role of predation in the evolution of eggshell colour may vary not only between cavity and open nesters, but also across nest sites within the latter group.  相似文献

In species where females copulate with more than one male during a single breeding attempt, males risk investing in offspring that are not their own. In the polygynandrous Smith's longspur (Calcarius pictus), females copulate sequentially with one to three males for each clutch of eggs and most of these males later assist in feeding the young. Using multilocus DNA profiling, we determined that there was mixed paternity in >75% of broods (n=31) but that few offspring (<1% of 114 nestlings) were sired by males outside the polygynandrous group. Male feeding rate increased significantly with the number of young sired, with males siring four nestlings feeding the brood at double the frequency of males siring only a single nestling. However, male Smith's longspurs appear to show a graded adjustment of paternal care in response to paternity only when other males are available to compensate for reduced care: feeding rate did not vary in relation to paternity when only one male provisioned young at the nest. There was no evidence that males could recognise their own offspring within a brood and feed them preferentially. The number of offspring sired by each male was significantly correlated with the number of days spent copulating with the attending female: on average, a male sired one offspring for every 2 days of copulatory access. If males use their access to females to estimate paternity (and thereby decide on their subsequent level of parental investment), a positive relationship is expected between the amount of female access and the subsequent feeding rate to the nestlings. Nonetheless, male feeding effort was only weakly correlated with female access and more study is needed to determine how males estimate their paternity in a brood. When eggs hatch asynchronously, offspring arising from last-hatched eggs often exhibit a competitive disadvantage compared with their older, larger nestmates. Strong sibling competition might result in a pattern of resource allocation favoring larger nestlings, but active food allocation towards smaller offspring may compensate for the negative effects of asynchronous hatching. We examined patterns of resource allocation by green-rumped parrotlet parents to small and large broods under control and food-supplemented conditions. There was no difference between parents and among brood sizes in visit rate or number of feeds delivered, although females spent marginally more time in the nest than males. Both male and female parents preferentially fed offspring that had a higher begging effort than the remainder of the brood. Mean begging levels did not differ between small and large broods, but smaller offspring begged more than their older nestmates in large broods. Male parents fed small offspring less often in both brood sizes. Female parents fed offspring evenly in small broods, while in large broods they fed smaller offspring more frequently, with the exception of the very last hatched individual. These data suggest male parrotlets exhibit a feeding preference for larger offspring—possibly arising from the outcome of sibling competition—but that females practice active food allocation, particularly in larger brood sizes. These differential patterns of resource allocation between the sexes are consistent with other studies of parrots and may reflect some level of female compensation for the limitations imposed on smaller offspring by hatching asynchrony.  相似文献

Parental care is a costly part of reproduction. Hence, natural selection should favor males which avoid caring for unrelated young. However, the decision to abandon or reduce care requires cues which are evaluated to give information on potential reproductive value of the offspring. The prediction that male sand gobies, Pomatoschistus minutus, care for foreign eggs as long as they were spawned in their own nest and at least some of such cues are fulfilled was tested. Egg-guarding males that had recently taken part in a spawning event were given a clutch of eggs that was sired either by themselves or another male, in either their own or another male’s aquarium. Males that had not taken part in a spawning event were used as controls and were given eggs sired by another male. We measured the amount of filial cannibalism and nest building. Control group males did not care for eggs and ate them all before rebuilding the nest. In the other treatments, there were no significant effects of paternity, though males moved to another male’s aquarium increased their clutch area threshold and completely consumed larger clutches than males that were not moved. There was no intermediate response in any treatment in the form of increased partial filial cannibalism or less well-constructed nests. Our results suggest that egg-guarding males cannot distinguish between eggs sired by themselves and those sired by other males but are able to react to cues indicating paternity state. Males do not adopt eggs to attract females in P. minutus.  相似文献

In this study we examined parentage within broods of the cooperatively breeding noisy miner using multi-locus DNA profiling. Previous studies of noisy miners described them as highly promiscuous, leading to the suggestion that promiscuous mating behaviour was a tactic used by females to recruit males as provisioners to their nests (Dow 1978). At our study site in south-east Queensland, Australia, we found that both multiple and extra-group paternity (i.e. a female mating with a male outside the group of male provisioners at her nest) were rare. In nests where multiple paternity was possible (i.e. clutch size > 1) 97% of 31 broods were sired by only a single male. Overall, 96.5% of all nestlings (n = 85) were the result of monogamous matings. Also, at the vast majority of nests, the male that sired the nestlings was also the main provisioner among all male nest attendants. Our results show that the mating system of the noisy miner can no longer be considered cooperative polyandry (Brown 1987) but is clearly genetic monogamy. We discuss the implications of this finding for understanding the complex social system of this species.  相似文献

We investigated sexual conflict over parental care in blue-headed vireos (Vireo solitarius) and documented the first example of unvarying unisexual brood desertion in passerines. Females at all nests (N = 24) that were monitored closely near fledgling, deserted their broods on or near the day of fledging leaving males alone to complete parental care of young. No males deserted. This observational evidence was confirmed with radiotracking of females (2004, 2007) and both pair members (2008). Radiotracked females began visiting distant males 1–4 days before young left the nest, subsequently paired with males 355–802 m away, and laid first eggs in new nests less than 5 days after deserting. In contrast, females suffering nest predation did not desert and renested with the same male. We suggest equal parental care (nest building, incubation, feeding) in the sexes, genetic monogamy, and an adult sex ratio biased towards males has led to female control of brood desertion in this species. Unisexual desertion may be more important in altricial birds than generally realized and we discuss prerequisites to predict its occurrence. One is genetic monogamy, which may be a female tactic that reduces the likelihood of males evolving counter-adaptations to female desertion.  相似文献

Females of socially monogamous species may copulate with attractive non-mates to obtain access to the genes of such males, and a preference for attractive copulation partners may result in sexual selection. Extra-pair copulations are common in the socially monogamous barn swallow Hirundorustica, and a 2-year study of paternity using multi-locus DNA fingerprinting demonstrated that 33% of 63 broods and 28% of 261 offspring were sired by extra-pair males. The frequency of extra-pair offspring within broods was highly skewed with the majority of all broods having either no extra-pair offspring or only extra-pair offspring. Individual pairs were consistent in their frequency of extra-pair paternity among broods, and the repeatability of extra-pair paternity of multiple broods of the same female was statistically significant. The proportion of extra-pair offspring was negatively related to the tail length of the male attending the nest. Behavioural observations showed that extra-pair fertilizations were more likely in broods raised by females that had been observed to engage in extra-pair copulations. The frequency of extra-pair offspring was unrelated to the intensity of two male paternity guards, mate guarding and the rate of intra-pair copulations. In an analysis of extra-pair paternity and male parental care in different broods of the same male, male barn swallows fed their offspring relatively less frequently if the brood contained more extra-pair offspring. Therefore, female barn swallows pursue extra-pair copulations with attractive males, which may result in sexual selection, even though extra-pair paternity is costly for females due to the reduction of paternal care by their social mates. Nest predation has been suggested as an explanation of the adaptive significance and evolution of conspecific brood parasitism, an alternative reproductive tactic pursued by females in several animal taxa. I used new nest boxes that contained only decoy eggs and were erected on lakes differing in real nest predation risk to test this hypothesis in the common goldeneye (Bucephala clangula), a hole-nesting duck. I used broken eggs to simulate predation risk of the boxes to determine if parasites having no previous experience with the boxes discriminate between seemingly safe and risky nest sites. Parasites laid eggs in the experimental boxes independently of the simulated predation risk, suggesting that they do not use broken eggs or nest disarray as indicators of predation intensity. Parasites preferred experimental boxes on lakes where real nest predation risk was low, supporting the nest predation risk hypothesis. Assuming that females in high risk areas have had experience of nest predation, they may take this into account in selecting host nests.  相似文献

Four species of the Mediterrnean wrasse (genus Symphodus) were investigated under natural conditions near Calvi, Corsica, France, to test the idea that extensive male mating-investment limits the extremes of male reproductive success, and thus reduces selection for protogynous sex change. The four species differ in the extent to which males build nests and care for the eggs, and this sort of paternal care can detract from time spent in mating. In S. ocellatus and S. roissali larger males construct an elaborate nest, ventilate the eggs, and engage in territorial defense. The spawning rates for these males are relatively low and variable due to long periods spent in nest construction and egg tending. They also suffer a large amount of interference from smaller males, which may be due to the predictability of nest location. Sex change appears to be absent. S. tinca males construct only a rudimentary nest, do not ventilate the eggs, and experience much less spawning interference. Large males are relatively more successful in mating in this species, and sex change appears to occasionally occur. The large males of S. melanocercus spawn at a much higher rate than small males, due in part to the fact that they do not construct or defend nests and thus are able to spawn on a daily basis. Sex change appears to be common in this species. Thus, the species that shows the greatest sexual difference in changes of expected fertility with size is also the species that shows the strongest expression of sex change. Studies such as this can begin to indicate the actual costs of changing sex.  相似文献
