Decision making in dune management: theory and practice 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Effective decision making depends upon the availability of quality information. Procedures involved in assessing dune vulnerability
and protection require monitoring of sporadic processes and information must be collected from many discipline sources. In
particular, a significant challenge to strategic management is recognition of subtle discontinuities which could undermine
the long term stability of the dune system. These changes may be irregular and/or non linear requiring managers to be aware
of existing parameters, patterns and emerging discontinuities. A range of components within the system should be measured
on a systematic, temporal and spatial basis. An environmentalchecklist is a useful management technique which systematises information, so that strategic objectives can be made operational and
achievable. Problems can be identified and solved with this methodology particularly if it is incorporated into aW problem solving model. The checklist procedure proposed in this paper has been developed and tested in field conditions for
a range of north-west and south-European dune systems. Whereas a universalchecklist applicable to all systems is utopian in aim, intra and extra-regional comparisons can be undertaken with only minor modifications
of some components. Parameters covering site and dune morphology, beach condition; surface character of the seaward 200 m
of the dunes; pressure of use and recent protection measures are the basis for calculating vulnerability and protection indices.
The balance between these indices can be determined, analysed and form the foundation for future informed management decisions. 相似文献

The potential impact of future sea level rise and climate change on 15 Welsh coastal dune systems has been investigated. Historical
Trend Analysis was undertaken using Ordnance Survey maps to quantify past shoreline change and to permit extrapolation of
past trends to predict possible future shoreline positions by 2080–2100. Predictions were also made using the Bruun Rule relationship
between sea level rise and shoreline response and an integrated method of assessment, Expert Geomorphological Assessment (EGA),
which provides a ‘best estimate’ of future coastline change, taking into account such factors as geological constraints, the
nature of past, present and future environmental forcing factors, and known coastal process–response relationships. The majority
of the 15 systems investigated experienced a net increase in dune area over the last 100–120 years. Only one (Whiteford Burrows)
experienced significant net area loss (>5 ha). EGA predictions suggest that several systems are likely to experience significant
net loss of dune habitat over the next century, whilst continued net gain is likely to occur for systems where sediment supply
rates remain high. Little net change is predicted in some systems. Considering the 15 dune systems together, it is considered
unlikely that net dune habitat loss will exceed net gain over the next 100 years provided that there are no major disruptions
to sediment supply and natural coastal processes. 相似文献

Historical records of sand drift and dune-building along the coastline of Western Europe provide insights into the natural
processes of sand dune accretion and both the impacts of, and human responses to, sand incursions. The analysis of documentary
records, instrumental data and proxy records over the last 1,000 years indicates that this period, which included the Little
Ice Age (AD 1570–1900), featured numerous episodes of sand drift and dune development driven by strong winds associated with
Atlantic storms. It is estimated that sand drift affected over a quarter of a million hectares of coastal land in Western
Europe. The widespread use of vegetation to stabilise coastal dune systems and prevent sand drift is documented across Europe
from AD 1100 and by the start of the 20th century all of the larger coastal dune systems in Portugal, France, Britain and
Denmark were comparatively inactive. Given that Atlantic storminess has remained more or less unchanged over the last 200 years,
modern dune management strategies which consider dune devegetation, driven by an increasing focus on ‘naturalness’, may give
rise to a recurrence of sand drift problems. Predictions of increased storm frequencies by the end of the 21st century, coupled
with sea level rise and potential changes in sand supply will present further challenges for the more ‘dynamic’ dune management
strategies. 相似文献

Coastal dune ecosystems are among the most dynamic habitats with high conservation value in Europe but are also under strong
anthropogenic pressure regarding coastal protection and recreation. Hence, it is of high importance to know about long-term
natural and anthropogenic changes and development of protected dune habitats for nature conservation, as well as for coastal
management. This paper aims to identify the vegetation dynamics on the Łeba Bar/Poland over a period of 74 years by cartometric
comparison using modern Geographical Information System (GIS). To quantify the rate of vegetation dynamics two aerial photographs
dating from 1932 and 2006 were digitalized and analyzed with GIS to produce digital vegetation maps. Information about decrease,
increase and stability of vegetation types of this area are discussed. The results show that there has been a clear reduction
in the total area of bare sand and a considerable increase of woodlands and dense grass communities. Nevertheless, the remaining
extensive drift sand areas and deflation hollows on the Łeba Bar offer one of the most important habitats for pioneer vegetation
on bare sand of migrating dunes and dunes at the Southern Baltic coast. The present work proved the need to observe the future
development of the vegetation communities and to implement management measures to maintain the dynamic of this unique dune
landscape. 相似文献

A detailed and multidisciplinary study of physical and biotic factors of a coastal sector of southern Italy, the Pineta della foce del Garigliano SCI (Site of Community Importance) area, has been carried out in the frame of the European research project LIFE + Nature & Biodiversity PROVIDUNE. We evaluated the degree of dunes vulnerability (Dune Vulnerability Index, DVI) and sustainable anthropogenic load (carrying capacity) of the emerged beach of the study area, which is largely affected by shoreline retreat and degradation of dune habitat. The values of about 0.6 of the DVI in the two key sectors of the study area suggest a high level of vulnerability of beach/dune system due to both natural and human factors. The partial vulnerability index related to the geomorphological condition exhibits the highest values, as a consequence of a coastal system largely affected by recent and present-day beach erosion and severe hydrodynamics processes. Several inadequate human practises have been recognized in the study area whose impact appears to be an important factor in controlling the reduction of the beach-dune system resilience. Integrated analysis of DVI and carrying capacity suggests that the northern and central sectors of the study area have a high level of dune vulnerability due to hydrodynamic and geomorphological factors whereas the human impact can be considered relatively less important. The southern sector of the study area is featured by a well-developed infrastructure system, which is able to assure a sustainable beach occupation. Nevertheless, significant interventions such as dune replacement by permanent or ephemeral infrastructures, uncontrolled pedestrian or vehicular access and inappropriate use of mechanical beach cleaning have been recognized in this sector of the beach. These long-lasting impacts have promoted the dismantling of large sector of the dune habitats. Obtained results allowed identifying the critical area where appropriate actions can be performed for the mitigation of impacts, the conservation of dune habitats and their sustainable use. 相似文献

Interactions between water and land in The Netherlands 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The Netherlands are one of the most densely populated coastal countries in the world and there is only limited space for living,
working, transport and recreation, while there is also the need to preserve and expand valuable natural habitats. In order
to solve many existing and future conflicts of interest, and in order to create ‘added value’, strategies are developed to
optimize the use of water-land systems.
The principle of ‘building with nature’ is applied in order to integrate land in sea and water in land in such a way that
future generations will be able to use coastal resources in a sustainable way, including a minimal effort to maintain the
coastline and the promotion of a multiple-use system.
The concept of Integrated multifunctional sustainable coastal zone development is introduced. This concept deals with a balanced
approach to the lack of space for present and future coastal uses in relation to each other, to the hinterland, and to the
sea. Flexible master plans are developed, taking into account many functions of the coastal zone, and facilitating adaptation
to future developments—e.g. impacts of climate change and relative sea level rise. In this regard increasing the flexibility
of the coastal zone is of vital importance.
Large-scale coastal land reclamations in The Netherlands are dealt with, based on two different principles: (1) polder systems
(low lying land reclamations surrounded and protected by dikes), (2) systems of ‘building with nature’—land reclamation protected
by man-made foreshores, beaches and dunes. In the latter type new flexible dynamic-equilibrium coasts are created for many
functions, while coastal vulnerability is reduced and a flexible coast is developed. 相似文献

Basiphilous, open, species-rich vegetation types of young dune slacks have declined throughout Europe in recent years, and
have largely been replaced by often acidophilous, tall marsh and scrub vegetation. This succession appears to be accelerated
by a decrease in the discharge of calcareous groundwater from sandy ridges or small dune hummocks. The present study deals
with spatial and temporal variation in the chemical composition of the groundwater in the upper metres of the soil of a degraded
dune slack complex on the Dutch barrier island of Schiermonnikoog, with emphasis on (1) groundwater composition, (2) water
level and (3) decalcification patterns. The main aim was to assess perspectives for restoring basiphilous vegetation types
which had been abundant in this slack from 1954 to 1977. The depth of decalcification was related to former hydrological conditions
along a transect of 200 m. Acidifying effects of rainfall were reflected in the chemical composition of the groundwater below
small dune hummocks within the slack. Distinct precipitation water lenses, poor in dissolved ions, were formed under the dune
hummocks during a wet period. This microtopography did not contribute to the discharge of calcareous groundwater to lowlying
parts of the slack. Here, groundwater showed decreasing concentrations of the dissolved ions after a rain shower. Except for
the peripheral sections of the slack—where upward seepage of groundwater (exfiltration)still occurs—infiltration conditions
are now dominant in the slack. The consequences of the present hydrological conditions for restoration are briefly discussed. 相似文献

The varied and very dynamic landscape with a high biological diversity is a distinctive feature of the Curonian spit at the
regional scale. Throughout the 20th century the main morphodynamic trend in the littoral of the Curonian spit was shoreline
grading on the lagoon side, whereas on the marine side the increasing erosion at the foot of the spit, and increasing accretion
at the head of the spit prevailed. The results of a discriminant analysis (Wilkes’ λ = 0.001626 and F = 29.267 when p < 0.001) show that sites with prevailing erosion, accretion and sediment input from the drifting dunes form regular inter-related
spatial structures in the littoral with distinctive resulting discontinuities of the sediment drift along the lagoon coast.
Dune littoral cells are characterized by Aeolian sediment input and distribution ‘down-drift’, (usually northwards) from the
source. The most likely changes in the current development trends of the lagoon shore zone of the Curonian spit are related
to expected climate changes and further slowing down of the dune drift. The probability of storms and ice-drift events, and
their impact on coasts is expected to increase as a result of climate change. The dune advance will gradually slow down, and
with it, the sand input to the coastal zone will decline. In this paper, we define integrated shoreline management as a system
of long-term shoreline management measures, which is based on a littoral cell approach and aimed at harmonizing human activity
in the coastal zone with the natural development of the shoreline. We propose an integrated management program for the lagoon
shoreline of the Curonian spit, which is site-specific for each littoral cell as a coastal management unit. Drifting dunes
and seaside beaches are the natural amenities, which are best known and best appreciated on the Curonian spit by 49% of the
respondents representing the total Lithuanian population. A responsible tourism development should be considered as the key
means for proper appreciation of the drifting dunes and natural coasts by society, which means to acknowledge and cherish
the aesthetic and conservation values of dune and coastal landscapes of the Curonian spit as a World Heritage Site. There
are at least two pre-conditions for this: (1) to provide visitors with sufficient information about diverse values and functions
of the Curonian dunes and coasts within a broader regional and global heritage conservation context; (2) to enable tourists
to enjoy the most impressive dune and coastal landscapes at close range. In this paper we propose to encourage active dune
tourism, to reintroduce grazing into the Curonian dune areas, to restore and to preserve the most impressive landscapes of
the highest white drifting dunes by bringing the blown out sand from the leeward foot of the dunes back to the crest artificially. 相似文献

Graphical models (alternatively, Bayesian belief networks, path analysis models) are increasingly used for modeling complex
ecological systems (e.g., Lee, In: Ferson S, Burgman M(eds) Quantative methods for conservation biology. Springer, Berlin
Heilin Heideslperk New York, pp.127–147, 2000; Borsuk et al., J Water Res Plann Manage 129:271–282, 2003). Their implementation
in this context leverages their utility in modeling interrelationships in multivariate systems, and in a Bayesian implementation,
their intuitive appeal of yielding easily interpretable posterior probability estimates. However, methods for incorporating
correlational structure to account for observations collected through time and/or space—features of most ecological data—have
not been widely studied; Haas et al. (AI Appl 8:15–27, 1994) is one exception. In this paper, an “isomorphic” chain graph
(ICG) model is introduced to account for correlation between samples by linking site-specific Bayes network models. Several
results show that the ICG preserves many of the Markov properties (conditional and marginal dependencies) of the site-specific
models. The ICG model is compared with a model that does not account for spatial correlation. Data from several stream networks
in the Willamette River valley, Oregon (USA) are used. Significant correlation between sites within the same stream network
is shown with an ICG model. 相似文献

Animals usually build nests to provide protection, for themselves or their offspring, from adverse environmental conditions.
However, different nest structures may be better at providing protection in different environments. The ability to adjust
building behaviour and design of nests in response to variation in environmental conditions is therefore likely to be important
in determining individual fitness. Here, we look at how the nests of three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) males differ between still and flowing water conditions. Within flowing water treatments, we find that males select nesting
sites with lower than average flow. We also find that nests built in flowing water are smaller and more streamlined than those
built in still water. Nests built in flowing water contain more spiggin—an endogenous glycoprotein secreted by nesting males—per
gramme of nest material than still water nests, though the absolute spiggin content of nests did not vary with flow regime.
These results suggest that male sticklebacks may adjust nest-site selection and nest structure to suit environmental conditions
in which they are building. Because flow regime is a factor that is often altered by anthropogenic activities, such as impoundment,
channelization and abstraction, this study may also have implications for the conservation of freshwater fish populations. 相似文献

As coastal populations expand, demands for recreational opportunities on beaches and coastal dunes grow correspondingly. Although
dunes are known to be sensitive to direct human disturbance and provide irreplaceable ecosystem services (e.g. erosion control,
critical habitat and nesting sites), dunes serve as campsites for large numbers of people (∼90,000 p.a.) on the ocean-exposed
shores of Fraser Island, Australia. Campsites are located in the established dunes and can only be accessed with 4WD vehicles
along tracks cut directly from the beach through the foredunes. Here we quantified the extent of physical damage to foredunes
caused by this practice, and tested whether human-induced physical changes to foredunes translate into biological effects.
Of the 124 km of ocean-exposed beaches, 122 km (98%) are open to vehicles driven on the beaches, and camping zones cover 28.7
km or 23% of the dunes. A total of 235 vehicle tracks are cut across the foredunes at an average density of eight tracks per
km of beach. These tracks have effectively destroyed one-fifth (20.2%) of the dune front in camping zones, deeply incising
the dune-beach interface. There is evidence of accelerated erosion and shoreline retreat centred around vehicle tracks, resulting
in a “scalloping” of the shoreline. No dune vegetation remains in the tracks and the abundance of ghost crabs (Ocypode spp.) is significantly reduced compared with the abutting dunes. Because current levels of environmental change caused by
dune camping may not be compatible with the sustainable use of coastal resources and conservation obligations for the island
(listed as a World Heritage Area and gazetted as a National Park), restoration and mitigation interventions are critical.
These will require spatial prioritisation of effort, and we present a multi-criteria ranking method, based on quantitative
measures of environmental damage and ecological attributes, to objectively target rehabilitation and conservation measures.
Ultimately, coastal management needs to develop and implement strategies that reconcile demands for human recreation, including
beach camping, with conservation of coastal dune ecosystems. 相似文献

To improve the present national and local sustainable planning capability for the coastal zone a GI application for the Italian
Coastal Susceptibility Assessment was planned within an institutional agreement between ENEA and the Land Defence Service
of the Italian Ministry of Environment. Taking into account previous European actions a suitable methodology to assess, in
a quantitative way, the susceptibility of beaches to be eroded has been set up.
The methodology balances the coastline trend as evaluated for a defined time period with the present coastal areas morphology
and land use, this in order to derive a value that expresses the evolutionary process in terms of probability of the loss
of goods within the ‘Homogeneous Coastal Tracts’.
The trend in the movement of the sea-land line has been used asgeo-indicator of a complex dynamic balance that refers both to marine and inland systems, and a vector GI application was built and locally
applied in southern Italian coastal areas.
The present shoreline position and some other information describing the intrinsic beach morphologies, and having significance
for the coastal erosion hazard assessment, have been derived from the national 1∶10.000 ortho-images of the National Cartographic
Reference System provided by the Italian Ministry of Environment. The illustrated GI application— CoSTAT—keeps the nominal
scale of all data collected or produced. In this analysis the coastal dune presence is analysed as factor limiting coastal
erosion susceptibility. Applying a matrix calculation a quantitative evaluation of erosion susceptibility degree was achieved
and plans were made to develop new information for a suitable use of Italian coastal areas.
The work describes the methodology, the conceptual frame-work and the results of a local application. 相似文献

In this study, potassium iodide (KI) was found to be capable of reducing selenium(VI) to selenium(IV). When KI was added to
Se(VI) solution, the Se(VI) concentration rapidly decreased with an increase in the KI/Se(VI) molar ratio. By using the potential-pH
equilibrium diagram for the selenium/water system, we confirmed that Se(VI) reduced to Se(IV) because the potential of the
solution shifted to the stable Se(IV) region upon the addition of KI. This reduction accompanies the oxidation of I− to I3−. The reduction of Se(VI) by KI was found to be effective for concentrated Se(VI) solutions. 相似文献

Coastal area management should be considered as an element of a more general philosophy—that of natural resource management—which
is in the process of replacing the purely ‘protection of the environment’ approach which was dominated most of the 20th century.
Specific legislation on coastal management has been adopted by many countries, and today steps have been taken to acumulate
all experience accumulated and to harmonize legal regulations on the international level. For the Russian Federation, formerly
the Soviet Union, with an enormous sea-shore line to cope with, it is a new experience to develop a concept and a legal regulation
specifically tackling coastal area management. The draft of a legislative act on coastal area management reflects the attempts
to find ways for harmonizing various economic, environmental and social interests in this huge area, encompassing relevant
Russian legislation in force as well as international conventions and treaties, and taking into considerations and treatices,
and taking into consideration foregin expereience in this field. 相似文献

A ‘coastal-hazard GIS’ for Sri Lanka 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0

Following the 2004 tsunami disaster in Sri Lanka, it was apparent that mapping the coast’s vulnerability was essential for
future protection of the local populations. We therefore developed a prototype ‘Coastal-hazard GIS’ for Sri Lanka so as to
provide an effective tool for decision makers to limit the impact of natural coastal hazards such as sea level rise, tsunamis,
storm surges and coastal erosion, and thus protect the exposed assets (population, property, settlements, communications networks,
etc.). The prototype was developed on a pilot site in Galle through building up homogeneous data on the land/sea interface
from studies conducted on the exposure of the coastal populations, the aim being to enable an evaluation of the hazards combined
with the vulnerability and thus an analysis of the risks. Coastal risk scenarios are developed so as to estimate the impacts
and consequences of an event (tsunami, storm, etc.) on the assets, the principle behind this being that if, in general, the
coastal hazard cannot be decreased, then a better knowledge of it through simulation should make it possible to limit the
vulnerability and thus the risk. The Coastal-hazard GIS will also provide a planning tool in terms of locating new settlements,
expanding urban areas, siting coastal protection works, etc. 相似文献

Soil microarthropods (Acari, Collembola) were analyzed along transects from shore to brown dune in two sandy coastal sites
of the North Sea (Jutland, Denmark, and Spiekeroog, East Frisian island, Germany). Predatory mites (Acari: Gamasina) and Collembola
were determined to species. The Jutland and the Spiekeroog sites each yielded 22 Gamasina species, 10 of which are common
to both areas. Collembola were identified from the Spiekeroog samples only (also 22 species).
Largest mite abundances were found in Jutland in primary dunes (419 tsd. ind./m2) and on Spiekeroog in old brown dunes (314 tsd.ind./m2). Compared to the mites, Collembola abundances are low, with maxima of 77 tsd.ind./m2 in Jutland (yellow dune) and only 18 tsd. ind./m2 on Spiekeroog (old vellow dune).
The communities of predatory mites (Gamasina) and Collembola along transects from shore inland to brown dune are quite specific.
High similarities are found for the predatory mites between the specific dune sites of the two North Sea areas, particularly
for yellow dune.
Additionally, preliminary data are presented for the southern Baltic Coast. The findigns are discussed in a broader context.
Arguments focus on conservation and biogenic dune stabilization. 相似文献

The study of correlations between different behaviours in a population—referred to as behavioural syndromes—has begun to flourish
during recent years. However, the evolutionary mechanisms that cause behavioural traits to vary non-independently from each
other are still poorly understood. Here, we bring behavioural syndromes into a new perspective, in which the phenomenon is
regarded at the individual level and on a continuous scale instead of as a population-level presence/absence trait. As the
correlation between behaviours is never perfect (i.e. r < 1), individuals are likely to vary in how consistently they behave. Therefore, we can predict that if behavioural syndromes
at the population level are results of natural selection, the consistency in a suite of behaviours—and not the behavioural
configuration per se—should be heritable and involve fitness advantages at the individual level. We define a variable that
describes the individual deviation from the hypothetical perfect correlation predicted by the syndrome. The use of such a
variable depicting the consistency of behaviours of individuals allows us to make solid evolutionary inferences about correlated
behaviours from patterns of individual instead of population variation. We suggest that, by adopting the concept of syndrome deviation, understanding the evolution of behavioural syndromes and, in particular, testing competing evolutionary hypotheses about
the origin of behavioural syndromes becomes possible in a more rigorous manner than before. 相似文献

The vegetation effects on changes of soil physicochemical properties and microbial activities in the costal sand dune were investigated to understand the roles of vegetation on sand dune ecosystem. Eight sites from six vegetation zones and two bare zones in the dune front, dune crest, and dune back regions were selected. Soil microbial enzyme activities of β-glucosidase, acid phosphatase, arylsulfatase, and dehydrogenase, and soil physicochemical properties of each site were evaluated. The results showed that all the enzyme activities were higher in the mixed vegetation sites with native sand dune plants and naturalized plants and in Pinus thunbergii community site both located in the dune back regions where the accumulation of organic matter and nitrogen were more prominent. The results demonstrated that soil organic matter and nutrients are the primary determinants of the microbial activity in sand dune where are exposed to a gradient of physicochemical stress such as high salinity, moisture and salt spray. Therefore, the conservation of vegetation that generates more soil organic matter and nutrients is important factor in controlling the soil microbial activities and biogeochemical cycles in the coastal sand dune systems. 相似文献

Coastal dunes are an essential part of beach-dune systems. Dunes systems have their own intrinsic values and provide a range of goods and services, including the protection of tangible goods located on the shoreline affected by waves, storms, and sea erosion. Dunes also act as repositories of biodiversity that have their exclusive habitat in dune communities, and the aesthetic value of dune landscapes derived from unique plant communities and landforms is also of great importance. Nevertheless, dune systems on developed coasts suffered a drastic decline in geomorphological and ecological quality throughout the last century. Catalonia (Spain, NW Mediterranean Sea) is no exception, and the coastal dune systems which were present in the early 20th century have now disappeared due to urbanization. The regeneration of dune systems is of crucial importance in this context. The aim of this study is to assess the current status of dune systems in Catalonia in order to determine their future prospects based on beach characteristics, those beaches likely to host dunes being determined according to their width and sediment type. The results of our study show that nowadays most dune systems in Catalonia are not developed due to human pressure on the beaches. Only those beaches located in the natural protected areas in Roses Bay, Baix Ter Bay, the Llobregat Delta, and especially the Ebro Delta, have the right characteristics to host well-developed dune systems. That said, 30% of sandy beaches in Catalonia have a width of over 35 metres; wide enough to host well-developed dune systems if appropriate integrated beach management is applied. The methodology used in this research also provide a tool to assess which are the beaches that can host dunes on other developed shores in the Mediterranean area. 相似文献

We prepared a carbonaceous sorbent for Cr(VI) from the culm of Sasa
kurilensis by dehydration with concentrated H2SO4. The removal of Cr(VI) by the sorbent was highly solution pH dependent and mainly governed by physicochemical sorption. The
equilibrium data fit well in the Langmuir isotherm model and indicate the endothermic nature of the Cr(VI) sorption. The desorption
experiments suggest that the Cr(VI) sorption is generally irreversible, owing to strong interaction of HCrO4− with the active sites of the sorbent. 相似文献
