Trace metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn) and Fe were analyzed in two sediment reference samples (NBS 1646, MESS-1) with AAS fitted with graphite furnace, using five different (three total and two selective) extraction procedures.

The comparison of the total digestion methods (hot strong acids) with reference materials gave good results for almost all of them, and the “teflon bomb” was preferred for its rapidity and ease of operation. Some non-referenced data on total and organic carbon, total nitrogen and minerals are given. The two selective leaching extractions (nitric and cold hydrochloric) were also compared with reference values.

The use of certified reference materials (CRM) for environmental chemistry is recommended, together with the determination of organic matter and fundamental mineralogical composition.  相似文献

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Status and Trends (NS&T) Programme has analyzed samples of surface sediment collected at almost 300 coastal and estuarine sites throughout the United States since 1984. the overall distributions for concentrations of each element are approximately lognormal allowing a definition of geometric means and of “high” concentrations as those exceeding the mean plus one standard deviation of the lognormal distribution. Those mean and “high” concentrations should be useful for comparing the NS&T data set and with other reports on sediment contamination. A world-wide data set, constructed from data in the literature, was summarized in an identical manner. It was found, after excluding locally extreme values, that the NS&T and world-wide data sets yielded very similar mean and “high” concentrations for Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn. Chromium was the sole element showing higher summary statistics in the NS&T data set, a result attributed to NS&T sampling in areas of naturally (not contaminated) elevated Cr content. It remains undetermined, however, why the world-wide data set, even with exclusion of “hot spots”, yielded higher means and “highs” for Cd, Hg, As, and Ag.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to estimate the distribution of heavy metals in water and in suspended particulates in relation to the observations made on hydrology, concentrations of oxygen, nutrients and chlorophylls in different coastal areas of the Ligurian Sea.

The superficial water samples were collected during the cruise of the R/V “Bannock” in 25 stations placed at different distances from the coast at Alassio, Savona, Genova, Chiavari and Corniglia (between 0.5 and 6.1 nautical miles from the coast). Furthermore water samples were collected at a depth of 10, 20, 30, 50, 75 and 100m, on offshore stations of every transect.  相似文献

An experiment has been conducted to contrast the effects of enhanced oxidised and reduced nitrogen deposition upon key chemical parameters in a Calluna moorland podzol. A 40 cm deep podzol profile, derived from granite, was reconstructed in one hundred 4.2 cm diameter cores. for 20 weeks, the cores were subjected twice weekly to simulated rainfall containing either twice ambient nitrogen deposition in Aberdeen, or further enhanced nitrogen (further 2- and 6-fold increases) as nitric acid or ammonium sulphate. to quantify the dynamics of soil change in each horizon, randomly selected cores were destructively analysed every two weeks and the soils analysed. Increased nitrogen inputs, regardless of form, substantially and immediately reduced surface soil pHwater via the mobile anion or salt effect. for the higher nitrogen treatments, the pH reduction was seen throughout the profile. Longer term soil acidification was also seen in the pHcalcium chloride results over the 20 weeks. at a given nitrogen deposition rate, the effects of ammonium sulphate and nitric acid on soil pHcalcium chloride were similar. the ammonium sulphate treatments were especially effective at reducing base saturation throughout much of the profile, the direct base cation leaching being associated with substantial ammonium accumulation. the results suggest that the direct base cation leaching caused by ammonium deposition needs to be considered when assessing atmospheric pollution “damage” to heathland soils.  相似文献

Populations of hermit crabs are critically limited by the availability of suitable gastropod shells that they utilise to reduce their risk of predation and environmental stress. Common whelks are the main source of shells for large hermit crabs in the northern Atlantic but are vulnerable to direct and indirect effects of fishing activity. This study examined the potential consequences of degrading shell resources for common hermit crabs. Laboratory trials demonstrated that hermit crabs avoid low-quality damaged shells throughout their life history. This laboratory preference was corroborated by direct field observations of shells preferentially occupied by hermit crabs, compared with shells available for occupation. In the field, 8 times as many empty shells had holes compared to shells occupied by hermit crabs. In the North Sea, the abundance and biomass of live whelks and hermit crabs collected at sites where they co-occurred were significantly related. However, whelks occurred at far fewer sites overall and were more patchily distributed at high abundance than hermit crabs, which were more widespread. At a subset of sites, whelks of the same body-mass range occurred in the Irish and North Sea. However, at these sites, hermit crabs sampled from the North Sea had a significantly lower biomass. This suggests that the shells available for occupation at the North Sea sites would not support crabs of a body mass comparable to that found in the Irish Sea. Using published data, we calculated that in some of the intensively fished areas of the North Sea, 24% of the available shell resource will be damaged each year. The reduction in shell quality in the North Sea may impose a physical constraint on the upper size limit currently attainable by hermit crabs and hence may have implications for population viability.Communicated by J. Curvemysella paula is a markedly crescent-shaped bivalve that lives inside snail shells occupied by hermit crabs. Here, we describe the unique symbiotic life, growth pattern, and reproductive biology of this bivalve, based on specimens collected from the shallow, muddy bottom of the Seto Inland Sea, Japan. C. paula was found attached to columellae in the siphonal canal, mainly of nassariid snail shells occupied by two types of hermit crabs: Diogenes edwardsii (Diogenidae) and Spiropagurus spiriger (Paguridae). The crescent-shaped shell of C. paula is an adaptation to symbiotic life in the narrow interspace between the snail shell and the hermit-crab abdomen. C. paula is a protandric hermaphrodite. In our samples, each host snail shell harbored one (or rarely a few) large female and several males. All the female bivalves settled on the host shells with their anterior end facing outward and benefited from currents created by the hermit crab when feeding. In the muddy bottom, snail shells are a limited resource for both the hermit crabs and symbiotic bivalves. The bivalves benefit from the mobility of the hermit crabs, which prevent the shells from becoming buried in the mud. C. paula represents the only example of obligate commensalism with hermit crabs found in Bivalvia.  相似文献

This study evaluated selection for shell size by three species of tropical intertidal hermit crabs, Clibanarius antillensis, C. sclopetarius, and C. vittatus, from species of shells which are frequently used in nature. Crab size and weight were strongly and significantly related to all measured parameters of the selected shells. The strength of these relationships (r2 values) depended neither on the crab nor on the shell variables taken into account. The relationships between crab size and the dimensions of the selected shells showed higher r2 values than the corresponding relationships with the shells that the crabs had occupied when they were collected (0.482–0.903 in comparison to 0.091–0.652, respectively), indicating that the crabs were occupying sub-optimal shells in nature. Negative allometry was frequently found in the relationships between crab and shell variables, indicating that large crabs select and use proportionally lighter shells than do small crabs. This negative allometry was stronger for the shells used in nature (except for C. antillensis), i.e. larger crabs tended to select heavier shells in the laboratory than in nature. Different allometric relationships were also recorded among the dimensions of shells used in nature and those selected by the hermit crabs in free-access experiments: as shell length increased, the selected shells were heavier and had larger apertures than the shells used in nature. The relationships between crab size and the length and weight of the selected shells did not depend on the species of crab or species of shell, but only on crab size. Therefore, analyses using these variables can be performed without taking the species of crab or shell into account, i.e. data from different crab or shell species can be pooled. The influence of crab and/or shell species was recorded only in the models fitted for aperture length and width, variables which were more related to shell architecture than did shell length or weight. In contrast, if crab weight is used as an independent variable, different crab or shell species can be analyzed together independently of the particular shell parameter. This indicates that crab weight may be less susceptible than crab shield length to shell morphological constraints. Finally, the results indicate that the preferred size of a given shell type chosen by a given hermit crab will depend more on crab size or weight, than on the crab or shell species under consideration, i.e. crab shell-size relationships are not species specific.Communicated by P.W. The exploitation of microhabitats is widely considered to increase biodiversity in marine ecosystems. Although intertidal hermit crabs and gastropods may inhabit the same shell type and shore level, their microhabitat may differ depending on the state of the tide. On the south coast of Wales the hermit crab Pagurus bernhardus mainly inhabits the shells of Nucella lapillus (84%). Hermit crab shells had a significantly different encrusting community compared with live N. lapillus shells. At low tide the live gastropods were found on exposed rock surfaces whereas hermit crabs were restricted to tidal pools. Communities encrusting live gastropod shells were characterised by lower species richness and abundance compared with shells inhabited by hermit crabs (12 species found in total). A greater abundance and richness of epibionts was recorded from both shell types during the summer compared with winter. Differences in community composition between shell occupant types were attributed to microhabitats used by gastropods and hermit crabs and the associated desiccation pressures, rather than competitive interactions or shell characteristics. This contradicts earlier studies of subtidal shells where biological processes were considered more important than physical factors in controlling species abundance and richness patterns. The use of rockpool microhabitats by hermit crabs increases the biodiversity of rocky shores, as some species commonly found on hermit-crab-inhabited shells were rare in other local habitats.Communicated by J.P. The ara studied is located between El-Dikheila Harbour in Elmex Bay and Mandara, at longitude 29° 47' and 30° East and latitude 31° 17' North. the aim of the work is to look at carbon dioxide components in this areA and the effect of waste water discharged on their concentrations. Surface and bottom water samples were collected from 12 stations during January, April, August and November, 1995. Total alkalinity, salinity, temperature and pH were measured. Carbonate alkalinity, total alkalinity, partial pressure and dissolved carbon dioxide, carbonate and bicarbonate ions were calculated, since the studied area includes two differetn sources of pollution. It wAs found conventient to refer El-Mex Bay as region “A” which contains stations from I to VI and the area located between Kayet Bey outfall and Mandara which contains stations from VII to XII as region “B”. When specific alkalinity is used As A tracer for El-Umum drain water it is observed that the drain water could reach Sidi Bishr area especially in August and November, while in January and April drain water did not reach this area.  相似文献

Resource value is often considered the most important nonstrategic variable in the fighting behavior of invertebrates. In our study, we tested whether the experience of shells of a given quality, occupied in the recent past, might affect the agonistic behavior of the hermit crab Pagurus longicarpus. We analyzed the fights battled by 84 test crabs against size-matched unknown rivals before (premanipulation phase) and after (postmanipulation phase) having modified the quality of the domicile shell of the contestants. Specifically, we compared the behavior of crabs that had been subject to either a worsening or an improvement in the quality of their shell with crabs that, although being similarly subject to a shell manipulation, occupied a shell of the same quality as in the premanipulation phase. We found that the crabs subject to a worsening in the quality of their shell were more aggressive than those subject to its improvement and that the former were even more aggressive than those that occupied a bad quality shell also in the premanipulation phase. Crabs seemed not to gather information about the opponent’s shell during fights or not to use this information, most often behaving in accordance with the quality of the domicile shell. These results are clear in showing the role played by the experience of a previously occupied shell, also confirming that the agonistic behavior of P. longicarpus is mainly based on decision rules of the type “own resource value dependency.”  相似文献

A multidimensional “goal programming” model is developed to aid resource allocation decisions in the U. S. Coast Guard's Marine Environmental Protection (MEP) program. It is then extended to a model of “goal interval programming” (GIP ) type where exact values for the indicated goals, as in ordinary goal programming, are replaced by ranges. Deviations outside these ranges are also accommodated by piecewise linear functions with slopes that vary with distance from the goal intervals. Uses and generalizations are discussed in the context of applications to allocating manhours and planning the activities of the Coast Guard's MEP program.  相似文献

A study, called SEFLOE, of the dispersion characteristics of several wastewater outfalls was conducted off of the coast of Southeast Florida (USA). in this study, the feasibility of utilizing high frequency (20kHz and 200kHz) acoustic echoes to characterize the dilution characteristics of the effluent wastewater was examined. It is hypothesized that the background corrected acoustic backscattered intensity may be used to guide chemical/biological sampling, and that one or more plume subfields may be revealed by the scattering strength field. Data from SEAFLOE have indicated that the wastewater plume field is divided into regions of higher concentration spatially separated by regions of lower concentration; we call these regions of higher concentration “boluses”. When the water column is density stratified, subsurface plumes may peel off of the main rising plume and remain at equilibrium on a density gradient.  相似文献

Organic matter lability can be determined with different approaches, based on the quantitative and qualitative estimate of its nutritional value. the C/N ratio and the particulate organic matter (as the sum of protein, carbohydrate and lipid bulks) vs total suspended matter (POM/TSM) deal with a quantitative assessment of the organic matter bulk, while other indices such as proteins/carbohydrates ratio (PRT/CHO) may give also qualitative information. Gordon (1970) proposed a functional approach, based on organic carbon decrease after enzymatic digestion. Coupling Gordon's approach with the evaluation of the main biochemical components (proteins, carbohydrates and lipids) contained in the particulate organic matter, a simple method to assess lability and nutritional value of organic substrates is proposed.

Water samples were collected at the surface and close to the bottom in a shallow coastal station (10 m depth) in the Marconi Gulf (Ligurian Sea, NW Mediterranean). the difference between “total labile” and “hydrolyzed labile” organic matter (respectively before and after enzymatic digestion) suggests a relevant presence of resuspended refractory materials vs about 60% of labile hydrolyzed organic matter, thus confirming the importance of a more qualitative approach to organic matter studies.  相似文献

Pagurus longicarpus hermit crabs depend on empty gastropod shells for protection against predation. Hermit crabs avoid gastropod shells in which holes have been drilled by naticid gastropods, and hermit crabs forced to occupy drilled shells are more vulnerable to predation by green crabs, Carcinus maenas. In this study, we examined the effect of predator cues on P. longicarpus shell investigation behavior and shell choice. In paired laboratory shell choice trials, we examined hermit crab response to green crab chemical cues. We compared hermit crabs from two sites differing in the percentage of Littorina littorea shells with drill holes. The percentage of time hermit crabs spent occupying intact shells increased significantly in the presence of predator cues. The effect of predator cues on the amount of time hermit crabs spent investigating shells differed between individuals from the two sites. Predator effluent had a marginal effect on the proportion of hermit crabs initially choosing intact shells and within 15 min most hermit crabs in both treatments occupied intact shells due to shell switching. These results indicate that predation cues alter P. longicarpus shell choice behavior favoring intact shells, which provide greater protection. In summary, predation appears to be a key factor influencing hermit crab shell selection behavior.Communicated by T. Czeschlik  相似文献

Predicting outcomes of species introductions may be enhanced by integrating life-history theory with results of contained experiments that compare ecological responses of exotic and analogue native species to dominant features of the recipient environment. An Asian oyster under consideration for introduction to the Chesapeake Bay, USA, the rapidly growing Suminoe oyster (Crassostrea ariakensis), may not be as successful an invader as its r-selected life history suggests if the trade-off for rapid growth and maturation is lower investment in defenses against blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) predation than the native Eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica). In laboratory trials, blue crabs simultaneously offered equal numbers of Suminoe and Eastern oysters consumed more nonnatives, irrespective of whether the crabs had previous experience with Suminoe oysters as prey. Satiated blue crabs consumed nearly three times as many Suminoe oysters as Eastern oysters of 25-mm shell height, and eight times as many of 35-mm shell height. Despite blue crabs consuming small (30 mm) Suminoe oysters at twice the rate of large (40 mm) Suminoe oysters, when 40-mm Suminoe were paired with 30-mm Eastern oysters, seven times as many of the larger (Suminoe) oysters were consumed. The greater susceptibility of C. ariakensis than C. virginica to blue crab predation appears to be based upon the biomechanics of shell strength rather than active selection of a more attractive food. Much less force was required to crush shells of Suminoe than Eastern oysters of similar shell height. Tissue transplant experiments demonstrated greater predation on oyster tissues in weaker C. ariakensis shells independent of tissue identity, and duration of handling time before rejection of C. virginica exceeded the time to crush C. ariakensis. These results, coupled with the present importance of blue crab predation in limiting recovery of native Eastern oysters, imply a role for blue crabs in inhibiting Suminoe oysters, if introduced, from attaining high adult densities required to restore a fishery, provide appreciable reef habitat, and reduce turbidity through filtration. Thus, in high-predation environments, allocation of resources to rapid growth and development rather than to predation defenses reflects a life-history trade-off that may promote early stages of invasion, yet prevent attainment of dense adult populations.  相似文献

Crab pots were used to sample a population of Scylla serrata (Forskal) in an estuarine area in Queensland, Australia. Pots were laid 100 m apart at fixed positions for 4 d each month for 1 yr (April 1980–June 1981). Data from recapture of tagged crabs showed that males larger than 140 mm carapace width and females larger than 150 mm had a higher capture probability than did smaller crabs; thus size-frequency distributions based on crab-pot captures are biased. Spacing trials showed that pots positioned 50 m apart fished competitively but that there was no difference in catch between those placed 100 and 200 m apart. Catch distribution indicated that the presence of a crab in a pot reduced the probability of further captures. Temperature and incidence of recently moulted crabs accounted for 66% of variation in monthly catches. Catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) data can be used as a measure of relative abundance of adults if allowance is made for temperature and the incidence of moulting. The capture-mark-release-recapture method for making population estimates was tested but it is concluded that, because of cost and bias in collecting techniques, it cannot be recommended as a technique for studying S. serrata.  相似文献

The non-indigenous green crab (Carcinus maenas) is an important predator on bivalve wild beds in coastal areas worldwide. This study explored size-dependent green crab prey preference on American oysters (Crassostrea virginica), blue mussels (Mytilus edulis), and soft-shell clams (Mya arenaria) in a productive coastal system of Atlantic Canada. Using two sizes of prey and three different experimental manipulations, small, medium, and large green crabs were given a choice among these three bivalves, and their daily feeding rates were monitored over the course of 3 days. For both prey sizes, green crabs showed an early feeding preference for soft-shell clams and, only as they declined in numbers, a switch toward mussels and subsequently toward oysters. We found that such changes in the timing (order) of prey preference are related to prey differences in shell thickness, a fairly reliable indicator of prey shell strength.  相似文献

Many mobile animals migrate because of the different benefits provided by different localities in time and space. For hermit crabs, such benefits include resource (shell, water, food) acquisition and gamete release. One of the more successful crustacean land-invaders, Coenobita hermit crabs, undertake complex short-range migrations in SW Madagascar. Number of active hermit crabs was inversely related to wind strength and positively related to tidal range, emphasising that movement would conserve water. A circadian component was also recorded in the locomotory activity of Coenobita pseudorugosus and C. rugosus. Path linearity varied with many of the same parameters, but also with beach slope. Movement was primarily perpendicular to shore in small individuals, but the parallel proportion increased with hermit crab size and tidal range, probably driven mostly by shell and food searching. Despite the costs of movement and shell carriage in the terrestrial environment, C. pseudorugosus and C. rugosus were as fast as their marine counterparts. Their speeds varied principally with individual size and were approximately 20% faster without shells and about 20% slower when climbing up a 20° slope, compared to horizontal or downhill travel. Hermit crabs, which are highly numerous and speciose in SW Madagascar, do not seem to partition niches by differential movement patterns. Aside from provision of shells in middens and capturing large adults for bait or pets, human activity may have a profound effect on hermit crab movement: observations at rare uninhabited marine reserves like Nosy Ve show that considerable diurnal activity may take place despite the apparent hostility of the environment to an essentially marine animal.  相似文献

Size advantage in male–male competition over mates, combined with male preference over large females, is a common feature that can drive to size assortative mating and, eventually, sexual selection. In crabs, appendage autotomy can affect assortative mating and opportunity for sexual selection by affecting size advantage in mating contests. In this work, we evaluate the effect of size and appendage autotomy in generating assortative mating in the mud crab Cyrtograpsus angulatus. Field observations of guarding pairs in two different populations show a positive correlation between carapace width of males and females in both the populations. In one of the populations, incidence of appendage autotomy was low and the variability in the size of reproductive males was lower than the variability in the size of randomly collected males (i.e. only larger males were successful in getting a female), whereas there was no differences in the other population (i.e. most male sizes were successful) where the incidence of appendage autotomy was very high, indicating that the importance of size is higher when the incidence of autotomy is low. In this context, experiments (in both populations) show that, in contests for a female, larger males outcompete smaller ones only when they had intact appendages. When males had missing chelipeds, winning or loosing against smaller males was random. This may lead to a decrease in the importance of male size in populations with high incidence of cheliped autotomy, affecting assortative mating and opportunity for selection and, thus, affecting selective pressures.  相似文献

Bycatch is the incidental take of a species that has value to some other group. This paper compares open access and individual transferable quota equilibria to the equilibrium in which the joint value of the fisheries is maximized. The open access induced problems can be corrected by an individual transferable quota system only if both the target species and the bycatch species have tradable quotas, and only if the bycatch species does not have existence value. There exists a range of the bycatch-to-target species harvest levels for which the total harvest of each will be exactly taken by a given technology, even under open access. However, there may not even exist a unique open access equilibrium if bycatch is allocated by “rule of capture.” Prohibitions on the sale of bycatch reduce the bycatch level, but they also reduce social welfare.  相似文献
