The extent of accumulation of some heavy metals in root and aerial plant parts, total chlorophyll, protein and yield of C. cajan exposed to mine spoil were investigated. Chlorophyll and protein level on the control site increased from the basal level to 1.49 fold and 1.92 fold respectively on 150 d and attained a plateau within 210 d. The maximum decline in leaf protein and yield in selected mine spoil has been observed 37% (18.46 mg g(-1) fresh wt) and 76% at 150 d and maintained a slight decline when duration was extended up to 210 d as compared to control. Whereas in case of photo pigment content (Chlorophyll a and b) the maximum reduction was almost 42% (0.786 mg g(-1) fresh wt) during 210 d from its basal level. Plant tissues have accumulated maximum level of selected cations in control and mine spoil in the order (Fe > Mn > Zn > Cu > Pb > Ni > Cr > Cd). Metal accumulation in different plant parts was observed in the decreasing order roots > shoots > leaves > seeds. Invariably high accumulation of such cations in roots overshoots indicated accumulation, retention or restricted translocation from root to shoot. The metal share of seed varied from 1.3-39.5 fold as compared to their respective controls but their amount was quite below the toxic range. Thus the present work explores the metal accumulation in the plant tissues.  相似文献

A green house nursery study was conducted to assess the interaction between arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus, Glomus aggregatum and some plant growth promoting rhizomicrooganisms (PGPR's), Bacillus coagulans and Trichoderma harzianum, in soil and their consequent effect on growth, nutrition and content of secondary metabolities of Solanum viarum seedlings. Triple inoculation of G. aggregatum+B. coagulans+T. harzainum with Solanum viarum in a green house nursery study resulted in maximum plant biomass (plant height 105 cm and plant dry weight 12.17 g), P, Fe, Zn, Cu and Mn and secondary metabolities [total phenols (129.6 microg g(-1) f.wt.), orthodihydroxy phenols (90.6 microg g(-1) f.wt.), flavonoids (3.94 microg g(-1) f.wt.), alkaloids (5.05 microg g(-1) f.wt.), saponins (5.05 microg g(-1) f.wt.) and tannins (0.324 microg g(-1) f.wt.)] of S. viarum seedlings. The mycorrhizal root colonization and spore numbers in the root zone soil of the inoculated plants increased. The enzyme activity namely acid phosphatase (53.44 microg PNP g(-1) soil), alkaline phosphatase (40.95 microg PNP g(-1) soil) and dehydrogenase (475.5 microg PNP g(-1) soil) and total population of B. coagulans (12.5x10(4) g(-1)) and T. harzianum (12.4 x 10(4) g(-1)), in the root zone soil was found high in the triple inoculation with G. aggregatum+B. coagulans+T. harzianum that proved to be the best microbial consortium.  相似文献

Abstract

Analyses were made of heavy metals, manganese, nickel, copper, zinc and lead in water samples and soft body, shell and different tissues (gills, digestive glands, mantle and viscera) of the Unionid mussel, Lamellidens marginalis collected from two tributaries of the Cauvery river. Water samples from Station I contained higher concentrations of the metals than those from Station II. the concentration of metals in water at both stations were in the descending order: Mn > Zn > Pb > Ni > Cu. However, the concentrations of metals in the soft body were in the descending order: Zn > Mn > Pb > Ni > Cu at both stations in all size groups of mussels tested. the concentration of zinc maintained a linear relationship with the size of the mussels, but manganese showed a reverse trend. Small size (4-5 cm) mussels accumulated more manganese (105.5 μg.g?1 dry wt.) than larger ones (7-8 cm; 6.5 μg.g?1 dry wt.). Both young and old is accumulate the same level of lead, copper and nickel in the soft body. the order of concentrations of metals (Mn, Pb, Zn, Ni and Cu) in the shell of mussels from both stations coincided with the order of concentrations of background water except for lead. the accumulation of lead was higher in shell (30.4-36.2 μg.g?1 dry wt.) than in soft body (6.4-12.0 μg.g?1 dry wt.). the pattern of concentration of metals in the various tissues reveal that the digestive glands have greater ability than other tissues to concentrate most metals under study. the concentration factors for soft body, shell and different tissues are presented. the advantages in using the common mussel for biomonitoring of contaminants in water is also discussed.  相似文献

Present study aimed to investigate the bio-monitoring study of particulate matter (PM) pollutants of 12 roadside plant species, in Aizawl, Mizoram, India (an Indo-Burma hot spot region). While, the second part was ascribed to the bio-magnetic monitoring stidies. Pertaining to first part of study, highest dust deposition was noted for Ramrikawn (RKN-Med) site on Ficus bengalensis (1.2?mg?cm?2) and lowest in Bauhinia variegate (0.8?mg?cm?2). Further, increased concentration of heavy metals (Fe, Cu and Zn) was recorded at RKN-Med site. Roadside plant leaves of F. bengalensis recorded maximum accumulation of Fe (26.1?mg?kg?1) and Cu (19.5?mg?kg?1) while Cassia auriculata (12.1?mg?kg?1) showed lowest accumulation of Fe. B. variegate (1.88?mg?kg?1) recorded lowest accumulation of Cu. Zn was recorded maximum (48.2?mg?kg?1) in Mangifera indica while B. variegate showed lowest accumulation of 11.3?mg?kg?1 Cu at Ramrikawn site. In relation to second part of the study, M. indica, Ficus benghalensis, Psidium guajava and Artocarpus heterophyllus were found to be efficient in bio-magnetic monitoring because all the magnetic properties (magnetic susceptibility, anhysteretic remanent magnetisation and isothermal remanent magnetisation) were high and significantly correlated with ambient PM (R2?=?0.424 to R2?=?0.998) thus may act as proxy for ambient PM.  相似文献

Sea urchins (Paracentrotus lividus) were collected from the Mediterranean coast off Alexandria, Egypt and the Atlantic coast of Ireland to the west of Galway. Samples of another urchin species, Psammechinus miliaris, were collected from the entrance to Southampton Water, U.K. Both the Alexandria coast and Southampton Water receive domestic and industrial waste water inputs whilst the western Irish coast is relatively unpolluted.

Sampled animals were dissected to separate coelomic fluids, Aristotle's lantern, gonads and tissue (digestive tract plus connective tissue). the concentrations of heavy metals (cadmium, copper, lead, nickel and zinc) in the different parts were measured using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy.

Many levels of heavy metals in the different parts were similar in specimens taken across the wide range of sites and the two species. A notable exception was the high level of copper (33 μg g-1 dry wt.) and zinc 328 μg g-1- dry wt.) in urchin tissue from Southampton Water.

The metal concentrations in the gonads of Paracentrotus lividus are of particular interest because of human consumption of this species. the highest levels of copper (3.3-5.2 g-1- dry wt.) and zinc (74-181 μ g-1- dry wt.) dry wt.) in gonads were found in the samples from Egypt. Data from this study are compared with other results reported from the Mediterranean.

A simple, short term, elevated water column copper uptake experiment was undertaken with Paracentrotus lividus which showed an increase in gonad concentrations of this element.  相似文献

This study was aimed at determining microbial biomass at land water interface and the role it plays in regulating ecosystem properties of a fresh water dry tropical woodland lake. Four microbial variables namely biomass-C (Cmic), fumigated CO2-C, substrate induced respiration (SIR) and basal respiration (BR) were measured in humus samples collected from land water interface over a period of one year Microbial biomass (Cmic) was maximum during February (718 micorg CO2-C g(-1)). Similar was the case of fumigated CO2-C (560 microg CO2-C g(-1) 10 d(-1)), SIR (2900 microg CO2-C g(-1)) and BR (480 microg CO2-C g(-1)). Humus-N appeared maximum (1.60%) during November and phenolics (204 microg g(-1)) during December Gross primary productivity (GPP) was found maximum (3.30 g Cm(-2)d(-1)) during March. Almost similar trend appeared for chlorophyll and phytoplankton density. Variation in microbial biomass at land water interface can be explained by seasonality and the quality of substrate material. Asynchrony in the peaks of microbial variables with phytoplankton pulsation and GPP suggested that the microbial biomass through nutrient mineralization regulates ecosystem functioning of a fresh water woodland lake. This has relevance for evaluating the nature of anthropogenic perturbations and for maintenance of fresh water lakes void of human disturbances.  相似文献

Primary production of the marine phanerogam Posidonia oceanica (Linnaeus) Delile was measured by lepidochronological analyses at 22 sites in the Mediterranean Sea (Corsica, France, Italy, Sardinia and Turkey), between 1983 and 1992, to determine spatial and temporal variations. Leaf production (blade and sheath) ranged from 310 to 1 540 mg dry wt shoot–1 yr–1, depending on site and depth. Rhizome production ranged from 24 to 120 mg dry wt shoot–1 yr–1 (6% of average leaf production). At some sites the results obtained by lepidochronological analysis were consistent with earlier results obtained by classic methods (e.g. leaf-marking). While primary production per shoot (mg dry wt shoot–1 yr–1) displayed no significant differences between sites, primary production of the P. oceanica meadow (g dry wt m–2 yr–1) decreased with increasing depth at all sites studied. This decrease correlated with reduced density of the meadow (number of shoots per m2) with increasing depth. Past primary production was also extrapolated at three sites at the island of Ischia (Italy) for a period of 5 yr in order to determine interannual variations over a period of several years. While major variations were recorded for the surface stations (5 and 10 m depth), production remained stable at the deepest station (20 m depth). Given the large geographical scale of the study (location, depth range), it would appear that while P. oceanica production remains considerable, the values recorded in the literature on the basis of classical analyses (surface stations) represent maxima, and cannot be generalised for meadows as a whole.  相似文献

Cuttings of the marine phanerogam Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile were collected and transplanted in January 1991 at four stations of different depths between 5 and 20 m in the underwater reserve at Monaco (1 ha in area). From January to July, samples of the transplants were collected to study the effect of depth on survival and on chlorophyll and carbohydrate concentrations. In the leaves, chlorophyll concentrations were significantly lower (1.00 mg g-1 dry wt) in cuttings taken from 5 m depth than in cuttings taken from 20 m (1.99 mg g-1). Transplantation of cuttings from 5 to 20 m or from 20 to 8 m did not significantly change the chlorophyll concentration in leaves for a period of 6 mo after transplantation. Cutting and transplantation result in stress, as indicated by a decrease in pigment concentration without change of depth. However, the carbohydrate concentration in rhizomes from 5 m (32 mg g-1 dry wt), is significantly higher than in material from 20 m (17 mg g-1). Cuttings transplanted from 5 to 20 m lost most of their carbohydrate reserves (reaching a minimum of 2.5 mg g-1 in May); cuttings transplanted from 20 to 8 m maintained higher reserves (with a minimum of 20 mg g-1 in June). This may explain why material transplanted from 5 to 20 m exhibited only 52% survival, while material transplanted from 20 to 8 m displayed 80 to 92% survival. Material taken from populations adapted to low light at 20 m is probably more resistant to transplantation stress, particularly when replanted at a higher light intensity in shallow water.  相似文献

Sublethal behavioural responses including avoidance and burial rate were compared with 10 d acute morbidity and mortality in bioassays using juvenile Macomona liliana 1 to 3 mm long. The bivalves showed significant movement away from all copper-dosed sediments, with maximal movement after 96 h at 25 mg Cu kg (dry wt)-1. Increasing copper concentrations slowed the rate of burial, and above 15 mg Cu kg (dry wt)-1, most shellfish failed to bury after 90 min. After 10 d exposure, morbidity (defined as inability to rebury) occurred at 15 mg Cu kg (dry wt)-1 and mortality at 30 mg Cu kg (dry wt)-1. In avoidance trials, chlordane had a significant effect on overall movement from 20 g kg (dry wt)-1, but increasing concentrations reduced movement away from dosed sediment. Chlordance appeared to have no effect on burial rate. Survival was affected by 10 d exposure to 400 g chlordane kg (dry wt)-1, with increased morbidity and death. The relative sensitivities of the responses shown by M. liliana to copper were avoidance > burial/morbidity > mortality, with a 6-fold difference in the response threshold between avoidance and mortality. With chlordance, an avoidance response was detected at a concentration 20-fold lower than that causing morbidity. Behavioural responses of M. liliana have the potential to provide a sensitive bioassay.  相似文献

The waste water showed high values of total solid (TS), hardness and chloride with slightly alkaline pH along with high concentrations of Cr (2.03 mg l(-1)), Ni (1.59 mg l(-1)) and Zn (0.46 mg l(-1)). The concentration of Cu (0.21 mg l(-1)) and Zn in industrial waste water was low than Ni and Cr. The diluted (25 and 50%), undiluted (100%) waste water was used to irrigate the lettuce plants grown in alluvial soils. Plants accumulated heavy metals in their shoot (Ni, 13.65; Cr, 19.73; Zn, 21.6 and Cu 14.76 microg g(-1) dry weight) and root (Ni, 41.4; Cr, 31.6; Zn, 30.2 and Cu 15.85 microg g(-1) dry weight) in high concentrations after irrigation with undiluted industrial waste water. Maximum accumulation of heavy metals was found in the root than the shoot (13.65-21.60 microg g(-1) dry weight). Dry matter yield and biomolecules (Chlorophyll a, b and sugar contents) was found to increase with increase in concentration of waste water up to 50%, which declined at the exposure of undiluted waste water. Catalase activity was found to increase with increase in waste water concentrations up to 100%, while carotenoids content increased in plants only up to the 50% waste water irrigation. Use of industrial waste water in such form, on agricultural lands is not found suitable without proper treatment. It could be injurious to plants growth and may be a potential threat to food web.  相似文献

The effect of the bivalveCorbicula japonica on the nitrogen cycle in Lake Shinji, a mesohaline brackish lagoon in Japan, was examined quantitatively based on field surveys and laboratory experiments carried out in the summer of 1982 and 1983. The biomass of the flesh ofC. japonica comprised 97% of the total biomass of the macrozoobenthos in summer. Total biomass ofC. japonica in the lake was estimated 30 986 t fresh wt. The concentration of suspended solids immediately above the lake bottom, whereC. japonica filters the water, was 1.5 to 4 times higher than that in the surface water. In laboratory experiments, the filtration rate was 5.0 litres g dry flesh wt-1 h-1, the excretion rates of ammonia and of feces and pseudofeces ofC. japonica were 200×10-6 g N g dry flesh wt-1 h-1 and 33.4 mg dry wt g dry flesh wt-1 h-1, respectively at 27°C, the average summer water temperature in the lake. From our study, we estimated thatC. japonica filters almost the same amounts of particulate organic nitrogen produced in the lake by phytoplankton and that supplied from rivers, and that it excretes 30% of filtered nitrogen as feces or pseudofeces and 18% as ammonia.  相似文献

Total mercury (T-Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations have been measured in the muscle tissue of 16 fish species consumed in the Mojana region of Colombia. T-Hg analysis was performed by cold-vapor atomic-absorption spectroscopy (CV-ASS) and MeHg analysis by gas chromatography with electron-capture detection. Higher T-Hg and MeHg concentrations were detected in carnivorous species (T-Hg = 0.371 ± 0.172 (μg g−1 fresh wt, MeHg = 0.346 ± 0.171 μg g−1 fresh wt) than in non-carnivorous fish (T-Hg = 0.155 ± 0.108 μg g−1 fresh wt, MeHg = 0.146 ± 0.102 μg g−1 fresh wt). In the different species mercury was present almost completely as the methylated form, with percentages between 80.5 and 98.1% (mean 92.0 ± 3.4%). In 13.5% of fish-tissue samples T-Hg concentrations exceeded the maximum level recommended by the World Health Organization for human consumption (Hg = 0.5 μg g−1 fresh wt). Although mean T-Hg concentrations in all fish samples (0.269 ± 0.181 μg g−1 fresh wt) did not exceed this limit, risk assessment suggested that the consumption of 0.12 kg fish day−1 could increase the risk of mercury poisoning of the inhabitants of this region.  相似文献

对厦门市14种主要树种吸硫强度以及不同环境(清洁环境和污染环境)对其固碳能力的影响进行研究。结果表明:不同树种叶片的吸硫强度在0.04~1.73 mg/g。单位绿地面积不同树种净化SO2量为8.84~1 513.05kg/(hm2·a),其中天竺桂最大,其次为黄槿、芒果和刺桐,洋紫荆最小。多数树种在污染环境下单位绿地面积年固碳量受到明显抑制,如大叶榕、高山榕、小叶榕和印度紫檀等树种。然而还有些树种其固碳能力在污染环境下受到促进,如鸡冠刺桐、夹竹桃和小叶榄仁,表明这些树种对污染环境有较强的适应能力。综上所述,夹竹桃、小叶榄仁和天竺桂等树种既能吸收相当数量的硫,同时其固碳能力未受到削弱,表明这些树种是适宜在污染环境下种植的树种。  相似文献

The amount of mucus released by the Mediterranean coral Cladocora cespitosa (L.) was determined in laboratory experiments and the incorporation of mucus into bacterial biomass was investigated by means of incubation experiments in 1984. Mean mucus release was 8.5 g (mucus dry wt) pclyp-1 h-1 and amounted to 44% of the respiratory carbon losses of the coral since mean organic carbon content of freshly collected mucus was 102.2g C mg (mucus dry wt)-1. Due to the abundance of C. cespitosa in the shallow littoral of the Bight of Piran, the energy content of mucus released is estimated to correspond to about 20% of the phytoplankton primary production in this area. Furthermore, the carbon conversion efficiency of 20% obtained from the bacterial population during decomposition of mucus indicates the high nutritional value of C. cespitosa mucus, although bacterial carbon onto mucus particles contributes less than 0.1% to the total organic carbon pool of the mucus.  相似文献

The extent of accumulation of some heavy metals and glutathione and cysteine levels in the roots and aerial plant parts in two genotypically different varieties of A. esculentus (KS404 and BO2) exposed to mine spoil were investigated. Glutathione (GSH) level in both the varieties on control sites increased from basal level to 155.15 nmol g(-1) dry weight (d.wt.), almost 1.5 fold on 30 day and attained a plateau within 60 day Mine spoil exposure of both the varieties decreased glutathione 1.13 fold (89.2 nmol g(-1) dry weight) during 60 day from its basal level. GSH concentration in shoots of these varieties increased accompanying growth contrary to roots where it finally declined 2 fold. Cysteine content in control plants increased 2 fold (31.6 nmol g(-1) dry weight) on 30 day and finally declined 1.38 fold (22.35 nmol g(-1) dry weight, at 60 day). Both the varieties, when exposed to mine spoil, showed enhanced cysteine content almost 2 fold during 30 day (50.95 nmol g(-1) dry weight) but failed to increase further Forshoots in both the varieties challenged with mine spoil, cysteine maxima reached late (15.2 nmol g(-1) dry weight, at 40 day) relative to control but the levels declined subsequently (11.85 nmol g(-l) dry weight). Contrary to GSH, cysteine content in roots of both the varieties responded positively to mine spoil as apparent from the 2.23 fold increase during 30 d than basal level although it lowered to a level of 12.85 nmol g(-1) dry weight finally at 60 day. Both the varieties accumulated almost maximum level of selected cations (Fe > Mn> Zn> Cu > Ni) during 30 day, but BO2 variety was significantly superior in this regard. Invariably high accumulation of such cations in roots over shoots indicated accumulation, retention or restricted translocation from root to shoot. The metal share of the edible part was just 6% of the plant load. Thus, present work reflects a genotypic differences in metal accumulation and that affected the major non-enzymatic traits or synthesis of sulthydryl compounds as well. The present results also indicate that metal tolerance is in part associated with anti-oxidant system activity.  相似文献

The present study was carried out to determine the water quality in terms of physicochemical characteristics and plankton distribution in the coastal waters of Kattumavadi, Palk Bay for a period of one year from April 2002 to March 2003. Air and surface water temperatures varied from 28 degrees C to 32.50 degrees C and from 27.5 to 32.0 degrees C while light extinction coefficient (LEC) varied between 0.95 and 1.85. Salinity ranged from 26.0 to 34.5 per thousand and the pH ranged between 7.95 and 8.35. Variation in dissolved oxygen content was from 4.15 to 7.18 ml(-1), and the particulate organic carbon (POC) content varied between 0.49 and 2.28 mgCl(-1). Concentrations of nutrients viz. nitrate (2.15 to 8.28 microM), nitrite (0.12 to 0.62 microM), inorganic phosphate (1.28 to 2.15 microM) and reactive silicate (5.15 to 12.52 microM) also varied independently. Chlorophyll a content ranged from 0.28 to 1.48 mg m(-3) and the primary productivity, from 4.19 to 16.08 mgCm(-3) hr(-1). The present study recorded a total of 43 species of planktonic diatoms and two species of blue-green algae. Population density of phytoplankton varied from 18,000 to 34,000 cells l(-1). Percentage composition, of the diatoms showed minimum values during the monsoon season and the maximum values during the premonsoon season.  相似文献

A laboratory modelling for the assessment of damage to marble by the SO2-acidity in the vicinity of stacks has been devised. The modelling is based on the role of metal oxide particulates (also emitted by smoke-stacks) which catalytically convert SO2 to SO3 forming H2SO4 (in presence of water), which has an excessively high selectivity, compared with HNO3, for corroding marble. The requisites of the modelling are: (1) determination of composition of the marble, (2) immersion of samples of marble blocks (after measurement of surface areas) in H2SO4 solutions of known concentrations, maintaining pH and temperature at their initial values, (3) determination of concentrations of Ca and Mg (major components of marble) in the leachate, and thereby evaluating the mass loss of the marble, in terms of mg marble cm–2 day–1, for each level of H2S04 concentration, (4) application of derived data for evaluation of duration (in years) for the decay of 1 cm thickness of marble block by the process of surface corrosion. From the modelling, it was found that the duration for the damage of 1 cm thickness of the marble sample used here by SO2 acidities of 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 ppm are 83.01, 69.02, 31.24, 8.19 and 4.31 years respectively.  相似文献

The significance of the microheterotrophic utilization of faecal pellets derived from Gibbula umbilicaris — one of the most important gastropod species in the Posidonia oceanica ecosystem around the Isle of Ischia (Italy) — was investigated by means of microcosm-experiments. Initial total organic carbon (TOC) content of faecal pellets was 32 gC (mg faeces dry wt)-1 and declined continuously over a 2-month incubation period. The low values of TOC coincided with SEM observations of pellets which were found to consist mainly of diatom frustules and other slowly utilizable material. In a long-term experiment freshly egested faecal pellets were rapidly colonized by bacteria, which reached densities of up to 14x105 cells (mg faeces dry wt)-1 within 12 h. Thereafter bacterial numbers declined and fluctuated in a very narrow range between 2 and 3.5x105 cells (mg faeces dry wt)-1 during the two months of the investigation period. In short-term experiments (over 5 d) similar trends were observed. Peak densities of attached bacteria were followed by a decline of this population. Concurrently the number of free-living bacteria increased. This observation was confirmed by O2 consumption measurements of freshly egested faecal pellets over 24 h, where the highest O2 consumption rates were obtained after 12 h, followed by a rapid decline, thus supporting the view that detachment of bacteria may occur. The biomass of the macrobenthic communities of the southwest lagoon of New Caledonia is analysed with special reference to tropical soft-bottom assemblages. The samples were obtained in 1986 from 350 Smith-McIntyre grabs as well as by diving over an area of 3 500 m2, and covered a wide size-range of benthic organisms. The classification of the biomass data into taxonomic groups revealed the following: (1) a zoobenthic biomass (mean=13 g ash-free dry wt m-2) that is high compared to values previously published for tropical systems, but fairly low compared to those recorded for medium and high latitudes; (2) a large macrophytic biomass (45% of ash-free dry wt); (3) dominance by weight of sponges, molluscs and cnidarians over the other faunal groups. The distribution of the biomass among the trophic groups revealed the following: (1) the dominance by weight of suspension-feeders, which account for 67% of the total zoobenthic ash-free dry wt; (2) the absence of trophic group amensalism between filter-feeders and deposit-feeders whatever the degree of bottom muddiness; (3) the existence of a relationship between the biomass of surface deposit-feeders and ATP at the surface layer of the sediment, suggesting that this group feeds preferentially on living particles. Differences in trophic structure between the muddy-bottom, greysand and white-sand communities of the lagoon reflect the functional characteristics of each bottom type.  相似文献
