The diet of the temperate marine herbivorous fish Odax pullus (Pisces: Odacidae) was examined using gut-content analysis followed by principal-component analysis and analysis of variance. Fish were collected near Leigh, on the northeast coast of New Zealand, from February 1983 to September 1984. The data were categorised by size of fish, season, and state of tide. A major ontogenetic shift in diet was observed. Juveniles fed on animal material (crustaceans and gastropods), epiphytic rhodophytes, and some phaeophyte material. Adults fed almost exclusively on two phaeophyte taxa, the laminarian Ecklonia radiata and the fucoid Carpophyllum spp. Dietary selection was evident at the level of particular plant components; the diet of larger fish in spring samples was dominated by fucoid reproductive receptacles. There was no direct evidence of a tidal influence on diet composition of O. pullus, although the relative proportions of E. radiata and Carpophyllum spp. ingested by adult fish appeared to vary with tidal state. The volume of gut contents varied seasonally for all size classes, although the timing of peak annual food intake varied among size classes. Tidal state did not influence the volume of the gut contents. The ontogenetic and seasonal trends evident in the diet of O. pullus appeared to be related to a number of factors including relative gut length, gonad development, ontogenetic changes in feeding anatomy and seasonal changes in algal composition. 相似文献

Teleost fishes capture prey using ram, suction, and biting behaviors. The relative use of these behaviors in feeding on midwater
prey is well studied, but few attempts have been made to determine how benthic prey are captured. This issue was addressed
in the wrasses (Labridae), a trophically diverse lineage of marine reef fishes that feed extensively on prey that take refuge
in the benthos. Most species possess strong jaws with stout conical teeth that appear well-suited to gripping prey. Mechanisms
of prey capture were evaluated in five species encompassing a diversity of feeding ecologies: Choerodon anchorago (Bloch, 1791), Coris gaimard (Quoy and Gaimard, 1824), Hologymnosus doliatus (Lacepède, 1801), Novaculichthys taeniourus (Lacepède, 1801) and Oxycheilinus digrammus (Lacepède, 1801). Prey capture sequences were filmed with high-speed video at the Lizard Island Field Station (14°40′S, 145°28′E)
during April and May 1998. Recordings were made of feeding on pieces of prawn suspended in the midwater and similar pieces
of prawn held in a clip that was fixed to the substratum. Variation was quantified among species and between prey types for
kinematic variables describing the magnitude and timing of jaw, hyoid, and head motion. Species differed in prey capture kinematics
with mean values of most variables ranging between two and four-fold among species and angular velocity of the opening jaw
differing seven-fold. The kinematics of attached prey feeding could be differentiated from that of midwater captures on the
basis of faster angular velocities of the jaws and smaller movements of cranial structures which were of shorter duration.
All five species used ram and suction in combination during the capture of midwater prey. Surprisingly, ram and suction also
dominated feedings on attached prey, with only one species making greater use of biting than suction to remove attached prey.
These data suggest an important role for suction in the capture of benthic prey by wrasses. Trade-offs in skull design associated
with suction and biting may be particularly relevant to understanding the evolution of feeding mechanisms in this group.

The planktonic larval durations of a preliminary sample of one hundred species of wrasses from both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans were estimated with the use of the daily otolith-increment aging-technique. Larval durations were determined by counting the number of daily increments between the center of the otolith and the mark corresponding to settlement. The duration of the planktonic larval phase of wrasses appears to be extremely variable between species, ranging from 15 d in Diproctacanthus xanthurus to 121 d in a specimen of Thalassoma ballieui. Larval durations within species were also variable, especially in species with relatively long durations. Congeners tended to have similar larval durations and similar otolith-increment characteristics. Hawaiian and Eastern Pacific species had longer larval durations than their Caribbean or Western Pacific congeners. Similarly, Hawaiian populations had significantly longer larval durations than their Western Pacific conspecifics. The implications of these findings for biogeographical studies are discussed. 相似文献

The foraging behaviours and dietary compositions of three co-occurring labrids (Ophthalmolepis lineolatus, Notolabrus gymnogenis and Pictilabrus laticlavius), which are conspicuous on rocky reefs in temperate south-eastern Australia, were investigated between 2003 and 2005. SCUBA
observations at two locations showed that the feeding intensity, and hence the associated effects of these fishes on rocky
reef invertebrate prey, was temporally consistent. Relative differences in the contributions of ingested prey and use of different
feeding microhabitats demonstrated that the feeding ecology differed significantly among the three species. Thus, O. lineolatus fed on proportionately higher volumes of polychaetes, polyplacophorans, marginellid gastropods (especially Austroginella sp.), bivalves and echinoids, which were sighted opportunistically in a wide selection of microhabitats, but particularly
in sand/rubble. Ambush hunting was used regularly by smaller N. gymnogenis and all sizes of P. laticlavius to forage on amphipods, small decapods and small gastropods at algal bases or fronds and Diopatra dentata tubes. Amphipods were similarly important in the diet of smaller O. lineolatus. Larger N. gymnogenis foraged opportunistically over an increased reef area and made greater use of microhabitats that offered minimal prey refuge
(e.g. sand/rubble, bare rock/steel) from which common prey, in particular decapods, were obtained. The significant intra-
and inter-specific differences in dietary compositions, allied with differences in the use of feeding microhabitats, would
facilitate co-occurrence of these three conspicuous species and contribute to maintaining high richness of labrid species
in reef systems. Echinoids were regularly consumed by each species but they made a moderate contribution to the diet of only
O. lineolatus, which suggests that only one of the three labrids is likely to play a significant role in regulation of echinoid densities
in these rocky reef habitats. However, the broad diets and diverse forging strategies employed by these labrid species imply
that they have a system-wide influence on invertebrate prey on rocky reefs. 相似文献

Sequence variation in the mitochondrial control region was studied in the Mediterranean rainbow wrasse (Coris julis), a species with pronounced pelagic larval phase inhabiting the Mediterranean Sea and the adjacent coastal eastern Atlantic
Ocean. A total of 309 specimens from 19 sampling sites were analysed with the aim of elucidating patterns of molecular variation
between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean as well as within the Mediterranean Sea. Phylogeographic analyses revealed a pronounced
structuring into a Mediterranean and an Atlantic group. Samples from a site at the Moroccan Mediterranean coast in the Alboran
Sea showed intermediate frequencies of “Mediterranean” and “Atlantic” haplotypes. We recognised a departure from molecular
neutrality and a star-like genealogy for samples from the Mediterranean Sea, which we propose to have happened due to a recent
demographic expansion. The results are discussed in the light of previous studies on molecular variation in fish species between
the Atlantic and the Mediterranean and within the Mediterranean. 相似文献

We tested whether vicariance or dispersal was the likely source of speciation in the genus Clepticus by evaluating the evolutionary timing of the effect of the mid-Atlantic barrier, which separates C. brasiliensis and C. africanus, and the Amazon barrier, which separates C. parrae and C brasiliensis. Genetic data from three mitochondrial genes and one nuclear gene were used. Mitochondrial genes separated Clepticus into three well supported clades corresponding to the three recognized allopatric morpho-species. All analyses provided consistent
support for an initial separation (~9.68 to 1.86 mya; 4.84% sequence divergence) of the Caribbean and South Atlantic lineages,
followed by a much more recent divergence (~ 0.60 to 0.12 mya; 0.3% sequence divergence) of the Brazilian and African sister
morpho-species. Both these phylogenetic events occurred well after the formation of the two barriers that currently separate
those three allopatric populations. The planktonic larval duration of these species (35–49 days) and coastal pelagic habits
may have facilitated dispersal by this genus across those dispersal barriers after they formed. 相似文献

Wrasses are abundant reef fishes and the second most speciose marine fish family, yet little is known of their larval swimming abilities. In August 2010 at Moorea, Society Islands, we measured swimming ability (critical speed, Ucrit) of 80 settlement-stage larvae (11–17 mm) of 5 labrid species (Thalassoma quinquevittatum [n = 67], Novaculichthys taeniourus [n = 6], Coris aygula [n = 5], Halichoeres trimaculatus [n = 1] and H. hortulanus [n = 1]) and 33 new recruits of T. quinquevittatum. Median (mdn) larval Ucrit was 7.6–12.5 cm s−1. In T. quinquevittatum (n = 67), larvae of 12.5–14.5 mm swam faster (mdn 16.9 cm s−1) than smaller or larger larvae (mdn 3.9 and 3.2 cm s−1, respectively). Labrid larvae Ucrit is similar to that of other similar-sized tropical larvae, so labrids and species with comparable settlement sizes should have similar abilities to influence dispersal. Ucrit of T. quinquevittatum recruits decreased to 47–56% of larval Ucrit in 2 days, implying rapid physiological changes at settlement. 相似文献

The genetic relationships within and among congeneric species of marine fish from the Atlantic and the Mediterranean are poorly known. Relationships among all five species of the wrasse genus Thalassoma present in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean were examined using sequence data from the mitochondrial control region. Sampling was focused on the mid-Atlantic T. sanctaehelenae (Valenciennes, 1839) and T. ascensionis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1834), the eastern Atlantic T. newtoni (Osório, 1891) from Sao Tome, and the eastern Atlantic/Mediterranean T. pavo (Linnaeus, 1758). Two western Atlantic species T. bifasciatum (Bloch, 1791) from the Caribbean and T. noronhanum (Boulenger, 1890) from Brazil served as outgroups. Tissues from a total of 132 individuals were sequenced. T. newtoni from Sao Tome preferentially grouped with the central Atlantic T. sanctaehelenae and T. ascensionis. T. pavo exhibits two distinct coloration patterns, one in the Cape Verde Islands and one in the eastern Atlantic Islands and Mediterranean. However, no genetic discontinuities between the Cape Verde Islands and the remaining samples or between Atlantic and Mediterranean individuals were found. Within Mediterranean populations of T. pavo, our data suggested the presence of a genetic break between eastern and western regions.Communicated by J.P. Grassle, New Brunswick 相似文献

Larval fishes likely use a variety of settlement cues to locate and navigate toward the habitats they will inhabit as juveniles.
Information about the morphology and state of development of the sensory organs of larval stages of fishes provides insight
into their capabilities at the time of settlement. The peripheral olfactory organ of wild-caught late-stage larvae and early
juveniles and some adults of 14 species of the Caribbean reef fishes wrasses (Labridae), parrot fishes (Scaridae) and damselfish
(Pomacentridae) were examined using scanning electron microscopy and compared in terms of settlement specificity. Ages in
days after hatching and days post-settlement were determined from the otoliths. Morphology of the nares and the olfactory
epithelium are described for these species by stage. The separation of the anterior and posterior nares occurred before settlement
in the labrids but in some specimens of scarids this separation was not complete by the time of settlement. Densities of ciliated
and microvillous receptor cells and non-sensory ciliated epithelial cells were calculated. Densities of ciliated receptor
cells ranged from 0.389 μm−2 in a specimen of Thallasoma bifasciatum to 0.0057 μm−2 in Bodianus rufus and of microvillous receptor cells from 0.038 μm−2 in a Clepticus parrae juvenile to 0.266 μm−2 in a juvenile Doratonotus megalepis. Densities of non-sensory cilia, also associated with high olfactory ability, were also high. The olfactory organ in wrasses
is well developed prior to settlement and is comparable to that of adult fishes. The possible role of olfaction in larval
schooling, reef cue detection and orientation toward habitat at settlement is discussed.

In 1983 curred horns were detected in the rare Adriatic Sea fish Xyrichtys novacula (Linnaeus, 1758). Their dimensions and histological structures have been investigated. This observation, compared with previous occurrences, suggested the existence of heteromorphism within this species. 相似文献

Polymerase chain reaction and direct comparison of mitochondrial DNA sequences from a cytochrome b gene fragment were used to identify two morphologically distinct larval types ofXyrichtys, a genus of tropical wrasse (Pisces: Labridae). Both larval types were collected during ichthyoplankton surveys on the Middle Atlantic Bight shelf in the summer of 1988. DNA sequence comparisons indicated that both types were larvae ofXyrichtys novacula (Linnaeus). Back-calculated birthdate distributions for those larvae collected on the Middle Atlantic Bight shelf demonstrated that the two larval types formed two distinct cohorts indicating a biological difference. The two distinct larval types may be a consequence of an ecophenotypic effect, or they may represent offspring from genetically distinct populations. These results emphasize that important biological and oceanographic information can be gained through the use of the polymerase chain reaction and DNA sequencing for larval identificaiton. 相似文献

The diel distribution of feeding activity during the spawning season was compared for territorial male and female cunners Tautogolabrus adspersus in Conception Bay, Newfoundland, Canada between June and August, 1978. Territorial males feed significantly less often than females and concentrate their feeding activities in the morning, whereas females feed as frequently in the afternoon as in the morning. Based on the contents of alimentary tracts, territorial males, non-territorial males, and females have different diets. Since these three groups share the same habitat, the observed dietary differences probably reflect differences in their foraging behaviour. The relevance of these findings to the concept of time minimizer and energy maximizer is discussed. 相似文献

The dynamics of infestation by parasitic juveniles of gnathiid isopods were investigated at Lizard Island in the summer of 1997/1998 to determine when, and at what rate, they infest fishes. Variation in gnathiid abundance on wild-caught fish (Hemigymnus melapterus) between dawn and sunset was examined, and unparasitized H. melapterus in cages were exposed to gnathiids in the field for 4 h (8 h for fish sampled at 06:00 h) at five different times of the day and night (10:00, 14:00, 18:00, 22:00, 06:00 hrs) on three reefs. To control for any potential effect of the cleaner-fish Labroides dimidiatus, which consumes large numbers of gnathiids each day, sampling was carried out on reefs from which all cleaner-fish had been removed. Gnathiid abundance decreased during the day. Standardized abundance per wild-caught fish was 1.9 times higher at dawn than at sunset. Gnathiids successfully infested fish in cages. Sixty-one percent of the fish in cages were infested with ≥1 gnathiids, with 51% of the fish having between 1 and 4 gnathiids after 4 h exposure. Gnathiids infested fish both day and night. The log10 (abundance +1) of gnathiids per caged fish varied significantly between time periods, with higher gnathiid numbers on fish sampled at 18:00, 22:00, and 06:00 hrs than on fish sampled at 10:00 and 14:00 hrs. In contrast to gnathiid abundance on wild-caught fish, the number of gnathiids on caged fish sampled at sunset was as high as that at dawn. The estimated mean (SE) cumulative number of gnathiids per caged fish [mean size = 13.7 cm (±0.25)] per day was 7.8 (1.1); this is similar to the estimated mean number of 7.3 gnathiids on similar-sized wild-caught fish at 6:00 hrs. The high infestation rate of gnathiids on caged fish in the late afternoon contrasted with the low numbers on wild-caught fish at this time, suggesting that factors other than infestation behaviour may be responsible for the low numbers of gnathiids on wild-caught fish in the afternoon. Despite the plentiful diversity of macroalgae in coastal environments, few studies have examined the in vivo absorption features of common marine macrophytes. Here we report on results of a survey of 12 central California common intertidal and subtidal taxa, representing Chlorophyta, Phaeophyta and Rhodophyta carried out in the summer of 1988. Computer-assisted analyses were used to obtain fourth-derivative spectra from in vivo absorption spectra determined at room temperature to obtain spectral diagnostics for the different algal divisions and to provide a means to determine whether spectral features could be used to identify stress responses among these plants. Among the Chlorophyta, characteristic maxima for chlorophylls a and b were resolved in all species examined, and a spectral component attributable to siphonaxanthin-like carotenoid(s) was observed in two Ulva species and the coenocytic alga Derbesia marina. Representatives of the Phaeophyta were characterized by similar maxima for chlorophyll a and c, and for fucoxanthin. Among the Rhodophyta, maxima for chlorophyll a, as well as B- and R-type phycoerythrin were resolved. Differences in in vivo absorption features were detected for two tidal populations of Porphyra perforata and Mastocarpus papillatus. High-tidal thalli absorb less green light in regions characterized by phycoerythrin, but have enhanced carotenoid absorption compared with lowtidal thalli. Resolution of spectra by fourth-derivative analysis revealed significant differences in phycoerythrin and carotenoid contents. The spectral changes observed appear to reflect environmental and possibly populational characteristics of these algae. The spectral analyses described here provide robust, non-invasive means to characterize subtle responses of macroalgae to environment in ways not possible previously. Additional merits of these fourth-derivative analyses for use in environmental studies are discussed. This contribution is dedicated to the memory of Professor L. R. The lipid content and fatty acid composition of the small common wrasse Symphodus ocellatus was analysed within two populations located in very different biotopes on the French shore: a Caulerpa taxifolia meadow located in Cap Martin and a Posidonia oceanica bed located in Villefranche. Polar lipids represented 82–90% of the total lipid in adult female livers, gonads and in eggs. Cholesterol in gonads and eggs and triacylglycerols in livers were the dominant neutral lipids. Differences in lipid classes were found in livers between the two populations, but not in their gonads and eggs. Moreover, a quantitative difference in total lipid content was evident. Young fish living on the C. taxifolia meadow in winter had 21% less lipid than those living on the P. oceanica bed. The populations of S. ocellatus showed differences between triacylglycerol versus phospholipid fatty acid compositions and between gonad versus liver fatty acid compositions. Moreover, a significant difference was found between both populations in their liver triacylglycerol fatty acid compositions, suggesting a difference in diet. Gut content analysis supported this hypothesis as it showed important differences in the ingested preys between the two populations in January (planktonic vs. benthic, frequency of isopods) and in June (frequency of gastropods). Thus, we found that the fish populations from Villefranche and Cap Martin showed significant differences in body lipids due to different nutritional habits.Communicated by S.A. Poulet, Roscoff 相似文献
