Total site: wastewater minimization: Wastewater reuse and regeneration reuse

Analysis of technological wastewater streams in a refinery and petrochemical complex was carried out. Wastewater flowrates, temperatures, pH and pollutant contents were measured. Regarding the characteristics of the individual waters, possible connections between water outflows from the processes or process units and potential water consumers were determined. Possibilities to reduce the flowrate of technological wastewater with wastewater reuse or preliminary regeneration and reuse were found. The consumption of fresh water could be lowered by 11.2 m³/h, reducing the treatment system load and prolonging its residence time by 7%. The payback period for the changes proposed in the petrochemical plants is 6 months with annual savings of US$27 630. The payback period for the changes proposed in the refinery is 11 days with annual savings of US$15 500.     

THROUGHFALL pH: EFFECT OF PRECIPITATION : TIMING AND AMOUNT1

ABSTRACT: Precipitation, throughfall, and stream pH were measured weekly over a 27-week period in 1982 on the Little Millseat watershed in eastern Kentucky. The average pH values over the study period were 4.3, 4.9, and 6.4, respectively, indicating significant buffering as water moved from the atmosphere, through the deciduous canopy, and through or over the soil to the stream. Regression analysis demonstrated that the timing and amount of precipitation were important factors influencing the pH of the throughfall. Weekly precipitation and the three-week average precipitation were statistically significant variables, explaining 53 percent of the variance in the observed through- fall pH. Precipitation pH was not a statistically significant variable for this watershed and sampling period.     

The Seventh Kew Environmental Lecture: Our global future: climate change

The Kew lecture provides a major contribution to contemporary environmental views. The Hon. Timothy E. Wirth is US Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs and he is responsible within the US State Department for overseeing environment, population, human rights, refugee, narcotics and related programmes. He was elected to the US Senate from Colorado in 1986 and served until 1993 when he chose not to run for re-election. He was, previously, a Congressman for 12 years and was voted one of the 25 most effective Members of Congress. In 1992, he served as national co-chair of the Clinton – Gore presidential campaign. The lecture was delivered at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London, on 15 September 1997.     

PROFILE: Wetland Mitigation Banking: A Framework for Crediting and Debiting

Biological Report 88(41):1–103), assessment of credits and determination of a compensation ratio that reflects existing and/or potential functional condition in a mitigation bank has been a formidable task. This study presents a framework for a systematic approach for determination of credits and debits and subsequently the compensation ratio. A model for riparian systems is developed based on this framework that evaluates credits and debits for spatial and structural diversity, contiguity of habitats, invasive vegetation, hydrology, topographic complexity, characteristics of flood-prone areas, and biogeochemical processes. The goal of developing this crediting and debiting framework is to provide an alternative to the current methods of determining credits and debits in a mitigation bank and assigning mitigation ratios, such as best professional judgement or use of preset ratios. The purpose of this crediting and debiting framework is to develop a method that (1) can be tailored to evaluate ecological condition based on the target resources of a specific mitigation bank, (2) is flexible enough to be used for evaluation of existing or potential ecologic condition at a mitigation bank, (3) is a structured and systematic way to apply data and professional judgment to the decision-making process, (4) has an ecologically defensible basis, (5) has ease of use such that the level of expertise and time required to employ the method is not a deterrent to its application, and (6) provides a semiquantitative measure of the condition of aquatic resources that can be translated to a mitigation ratio.
