In this study, a new type poly(vinyl alcohol)/peat composite bead is prepared and is shown suitable as a filter material for biofiltration. The optimal preparation condition is with the peat size of 16–35 mesh, the ratio of water to peat of 40g water/10 peat and the immersion time in the phosphate solution of 30min. The composite bead prepared by this process is a porous spherical particle with a density of 0.692 g/cm3. It contains phosphor and nitrogen nutrient are 2.91mg P/g dry solid and 3.25mg N/g dry solid, respectively. The diameter of composite bead is between 2.4 and 6.0mm and the average diameter is about 4.0mm. The equilibrium moisture content of the bead from adsorption and holding experiments are 50.5 and 66.8% on a wet basis, respectively, corresponding to the optimal filter material required and is sufficient to sustain biological activity as the bead adsorbs equilibrium moisture. The composite bead has higher moisture holding capacity and the compression strength than the pig manure compost filter material. The composite bead has buffer capacity and could maintain the filter bed at pH = 6.9–7.2 during the operation period. The percentage of removed ethyl acetate could stay at over 99% for 33 days operation while the composite bead adsorbed inorganic nitrate nutrient.  相似文献

In this study, a Poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA)/compost composite bead is prepared and is indicated suitable as a filter material for biofiltration. The optimal preparation process is with the compost size of 16–35 mesh, the ratio of water to compost of 40 g/15 g compost, and the immersion time in the phosphate solution of 60 min. The composite bead prepared by this process is a porous spherical particle with a diameter between 2.4 and 6.0 mm and a density of 0.96 g/cm3. It contains 9.43 mg P/g dry solid and 12.1 mg N/g dry solid. The equilibrium moisture content of the composite bead bed from adsorption and holding experiments is 50.5 and 54.6% on a wet basis respectively, which is about 1.74 times higher than that of swine manure compost bed. It corresponds to the optimal filter material required and is sufficient to sustain biological activity as the composite bead adsorbs equilibrium moisture. The bulk compressive strength of the composite bead bed is about 1.15 times larger than that of swine manure compost bed to ensure even distribution of air flow and reduce the head loss as the air flow stream passed through. The pH value of the filter bed could maintain in the 6.9–7.2 range during the operation period due to the composite bead has the phosphate buffer capacity. The percentage of ethyl acetate removal could remain at over 99% for 40 days operation while the composite beads adsorbed inorganic nitrate nutrients. The pressure drop of two kind composite beads and pig manure compost filter beds are 0 and 2 mm H2O, respectively, after operating for 40 days.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal changes in mobility of N species have been studied for three UK upland river networks, the Etherow in the South Pennines, the Nether Beck in the Lake District and the Dee in NE Scotland. The catchments are subject to N deposition at 35.1, 22.0 and 10.8–15.6 kg N ha?1 yr?1, respectively. The NH+ 4 leaching appears to be predominantly regulated by flow path in more polluted upland catchments. It is greatest where water draining acidified peaty soils contributes more to total discharge. Soluble organic matter may provide the dominant counter anion. In the Etherow and Dee catchments, which are dominated by acid mineral and organic soils, at high discharge NO? 3 also appears to be associated with greater input of water from acidified soils. In contrast, for the Nether Beck, higher NO? 3 concentrations are associated with tributaries draining soils contributing water with higher alkalinity, suggesting nitrification is important. For the Etherow and Dee, dissolved organic N (DON) appears to originate predominantly from acidified, peaty soils. Spiking experiments with peat soil from the Etherow catchment confirmed the limited capacity of these soils to utilize inorganic N inputs, favouring equilibration with NH+ 4 inputs and leaching losses of inorganic N throughout the year.  相似文献

A new version (v1.7) of the Integrated Nitrogen in CAtchments model(INCA) was applied to the northern boreal Simojoki river basin (3160 km2) in Finland. The INCA model is a semi-distributed, dynamic nitrogen (N) process model which simulates N transport and processes in catchments. The INCA model was applied to model flow and seasonal inorganic N dynamics of the river Simojoki basin over the period 1994–1996, and validated for two more years. Both calibration and validation of the model were successful. The model was able to simulate annual dynamics of inorganic N concentrations in the river. The effects of forest management and atmospheric deposition on inorganic N fluxes to the sea in 2010 were studied. Three scenarios were applied for forestry practices and two for deposition. The effects of forest cutting scenarios and atmospheric deposition scenarios on inorganic N flux to the sea were small. The combination of the maximum technically possible reduction of N deposition and a decrease of 100% in forest cutting and peat mining areas decreased NO3 --N flux by 6.0% and NH4 +-N flux by 3.1%.  相似文献

Soil- and stream-water data from the Plynlimon research area, mid-Wales, have been used to develop a conceptual model of spatial variations in nitrogen (N) leaching within moorland catchments. Extensive peats, in both hilltop and valley locations, are considered near-complete sinks for inorganic N, but leach the most dissolved organic nitrogen (DON). Peaty mineral soils on hillslopes also retain inorganic N within upper organic horizons, but a proportion percolates into mineral horizons as nitrate (NO? 3), either through incomplete immobilisation in the organic layer, or in water bypassing the organic soil matrix via macropores. This NO? 3 reaches the stream where mineral soilwaters discharge (via matrix throughflow or pipeflow) directly to the drainage network, or via small N-enriched flush wetlands. NO? 3 in hillslope waters discharging into larger valley wetlands will be removed before reaching the stream. A concept of catchment ‘nitrate leaching zones’ is proposed, whereby most stream NO? 3 derives from localised areas of mineral soil hillslope draining directly to the stream; the extent of these zones within a catchment may thus determine its overall susceptibility to elevated surface water NO? 3 concentrations.  相似文献

In this work, high-alcoholysis polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films were fabricated by melt processing and the plasticizing effect of compound polyol plasticizers on PVA were investigated with X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), rheological measurements, mechanical tests etc. Hydrogen bonding interactions occurred between PVA and plasticizer. With the increase of plasticizer, the flowability of PVA was improved and reached the maximum value at the plasticizer of 20%. Glass transition temperature (T g) and melting point (T m) decreased with the increase of plasticizer content. For the heterogeneous nucleation effect of plasticizer, new polymorph of PVA formed. The viscosity was sensitive to the shear rates. The incorporation of plasticizers into PVA resulted in the increase of elongation at break and impact strength, as well as the decrease of tensile strength.  相似文献

One-dimensional (1D) advection–dispersion transport modeling was conducted as a conceptual approach for the estimation of the transport parameters of fourteen different phenolic compounds (phenol, 2-CP, 2-MP, 3-MP, 4-MP, 2-NP, 4-NP, 2,4-DNP, 2,4-DCP, 2,6-DCP, 2,4,5-TCP, 2,4,6-TCP, 2,3,4,6-TeCP, PCP) and three different inorganic contaminants (Cu, Zn, Fe) migrating downward through the several liner systems. Four identical pilot-scale landfill reactors (0.25 m3) with different composite liners (R1: 0.10 + 0.10 m of compacted clay liner (CCL), Le = 0.20 m, ke = 1 × 10−8 m/s, R2: 0.002-m-thick damaged high-density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembrane overlying 0.10 + 0.10 m of CCL, Le = 0.20 m, ke = 1 × 10−8 m/s, R3: 0.002-m-thick damaged HDPE geomembrane overlying a 0.02-m-thick bentonite layer encapsulated between 0.10 + 0.10 m CCL, Le = 0.22 m, ke = 1 × 10−8 m/s, R4: 0.002-m-thick damaged HDPE geomembrane overlying a 0.02-m-thick zeolite layer encapsulated between 0.10 + 0.10 m CCL, Le = 0.22 m, ke = 4.24 × 10−7 m/s) were simultaneously run for a period of about 540 days to investigate the nature of diffusive and advective transport of the selected organic and inorganic contaminants. The results of 1D transport model showed that the highest molecular diffusion coefficients, ranging from 4.77 × 10−10 to 10.67 × 10−10 m2/s, were estimated for phenol (R4), 2-MP (R1), 2,4-DNP (R2), 2,4-DCP (R1), 2,6-DCP (R2), 2,4,5-TCP (R2) and 2,3,4,6-TeCP (R1). For all reactors, dispersion coefficients of Cu, ranging from 3.47 × 10−6 m2/s to 5.37 × 10−2 m2/s, was determined to be higher than others obtained for Zn and Fe. Average molecular diffusion coefficients of phenolic compounds were estimated to be about 5.64 × 10−10 m2/s, 5.37 × 10−10 m2/s, 2.69 × 10−10 m2/s and 3.29 × 10−10 m2/s for R1, R2, R3 and R4 systems, respectively. The findings of this study clearly indicated that about 35–50% of transport of phenolic compounds to the groundwater is believed to be prevented with the use of zeolite and bentonite materials in landfill liner systems.  相似文献

The use of organic wastes in agriculture may increase the production of crops by incorporating organic matter and nutrients into the soil, and by improving its physical characteristics; however, this use may cause environmental problems such as the leaching of certain ions. The objective of this study was to establish possible nitrogen and phosphorus leaching under real field conditions in Phaeozem soils. The experimental work was performed in a corn (Zea mays L.) field where three plots were conditioned with inorganic fertilizer, three plots with 4.5 Mg ha?1 of biosolids on dry basis, and three plots with the same amount of composted biosolids. The quality of biosolids and composted biosolids complied with the Mexican Official Standards. Soil water samples were collected with suction cups during two agricultural cycles and were analysed. Soil samples were also taken and analysed. The N–NO3 concentrations in soil water fluctuated between 0.9 and 98 mg L?1 in the composted biosolid treatment, between 0.7 and 64 mg L?1 in the biosolid treatment, and between 1 and 61 mg L?1 in the inorganic fertilizer treatment. The maximum concentration of N–NO2 and N–NH3 in soil water was 1.02 and 2.65 mg L?1, respectively. The greatest percentage of nitrogen leached is produced when inorganic fertilizer is used (37.4% and 24.0% N leached in the first and second years, respectively), followed by composted biosolids (17.1% and 13.5% N leached in the first and second years, respectively) and last by biosolids (11% for both years). This difference could be related to the form in which nitrogen is present in the fertilizers, while commercial fertilizer is as inorganic nitrogen, organic wastes are basically presented as organic nitrogen. The maximum PO43- concentration in soil water was 1.9 mg L?1 in the composted biosolid treatment, 1.7 mg L?1 in the biosolid treatment and 0.9 mg L?1 in the inorganic fertilizer treatment. The estimated percentage of leached phosphorus was less than 1% for all treatments. The minimum leaching that occurred seemed to be due to a sorption–precipitation process.  相似文献

The biobased contents of raw materials such as starches, sugar, chitin, or wood powders for biomass plastics were measured using Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) based on ASTM D6866. AMS measures the isotope carbon ratio of 14C to 12C and 13C in graphite derived from sample powders. The biobased contents of starches, sugar or chitin were almost 100% which means that they are fully biobased. The biobased contents of the wood powders were over 140% due to the effect of the post 1950s 14C injection due to nuclear testing. Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) composite samples were prepared using the polymerization and direct molding method. The starting compound was the ε-caprolactone monomer liquid combined with cellulose and inorganic fillers using aluminum triflate as a catalyst at 80 °C for 6 or 24 h. PCL cylinder-shaped composite samples with a homogeneously dispersed cellulose filler were prepared with Mn = 4,600 (Mw/Mn = 2.9). The biobased content of the PCL composite with 50 wt% cellulose filler (51.67%) measured using AMS was slightly higher than the carbon ratio of cellulose in the starting powder samples (41.3 mol%). This is due to the higher biobased content (112.70%) of the cellulose filler used in this study. The biobased content of the polymer composite powders by AMS was found not to be affected by the presence of inorganic fillers, such as talc.  相似文献

Membranes and filters made of nanofibers can have many medicines and water treatment applications. The use of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with antibacterial activity in these structures improve their efficiency. However, due to the toxicity of the compounds used in the chemical synthesis of AgNPs, in this study, AgNPs were obtained through a biological process using Fusarium sporotrichioides. AgNPs preparation conditions were optimized, including F. sporotrichioides medium and AgNO3 concentration. Next, a PVA nanofiber membrane with bentonite and AgNPs (Bio-AgNPs or Chem-AgNPs) was prepared using electrospinning. The optimal conditions for the production of Bio-AgNPs were the culture of F. sporotrichioides in the MGYP culture medium and 12 M of AgNO3. The Bio-AgNPs particle size and zeta potential were 58 nm and ??16.8 mV, respectively, with antibacterial activity. The PVA/NB/AgNPs nanofibers operation conditions included 7.5% w/w PVA, 3% w/w bentonite, and AgNPs 5% w/w at a voltage of 11 kV, feed rate of 0.5 mL/h, and 15 cm distance between the needle and the collector. The average diameter of the PVA/NB/Bio-AgNPs nanofibers was 230 nm. Also, the presence of silver in the nanofibers was confirmed through EDX and XRD methods. The antibacterial assay of the nanofibers showed that the inhibition zone of PVA/NB/Bio-AgNPs against E. coli and S. aureus was 0.62 and 0.36 mm, which is better than PVA/NB/Chem-AgNPs and comparable with chloramphenicol. The produced membrane is suitable for water treatment, food packaging, and wound dressing because of its good thermal, mechanical, and antibacterial properties.

Impact of Land Use on Soluble Organic Nitrogen in Soil   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Although it has been hypothesized that soluble organic nitrogen (SON) plays a central role in regulating productivity in some terrestrial ecosystems, the factors controlling the size of the SON pool in soil remain poorly understood. Therefore our principal aim in this work was to assess the impact of seven different land use systems (rough and managed grassland, deciduous and coniferous woodland, heathland, wetland and tilled land) on the size of the SON and inorganic N (NO 3 , NH 4 + ) pools in the surface soil layer (0–15 cm). After extraction with deionised water, we found that in most cases the size of the water extractable organic N (WEON) pool was similar in size to the inorganic N pool. In contrast, the KCl extractable organic N (KClEON) pool constituted the dominant form of soluble N in soils under all land uses, perhaps indicating that significant amounts were held on the soil exchange phase. In contrast to inorganic N, which varied significantly with land use, the size of the KClEON and WEON pool was similar for all land uses with the exception of KClEON in tilled land, where significantly lower amounts were observed. We conclude that SON constitutes an important soil N pool in a broad range of land uses, and that its role in microbial N assimilation, plant nutrition and ecosystem responses to atmospheric N deposition warrants further attention. This study presents a photochemical kinetics model to describe the degradation of water-soluble PVA (Polyvinyl Alcohol) polymer in a UV/H2O2 batch reactor. Under the effect of UV light, the photolysis of hydrogen peroxide into hydroxyl radicals can generate a series of polymer scission reactions. For a better understanding and analysis of the UV/H2O2 process in the cracking of the PVA macromolecules, a chemical reaction mechanism of the degradation process and a relevant photochemical kinetics model are developed to describe the disintegration of the polymer chains. Taking into account the probabilistic fragmentation of the polymer, the statistical moment approach is used to model the molar population balance of live and dead polymer chains. The model predicts the PVA molecular weight reduction, the acidity of the solution, and hydrogen peroxide residual. In addition to previously published data collected in this laboratory, a new set of experiments were conducted using a 500 mg/L PVA aqueous for different hydrogen peroxide/PVA ratios for model validation. Measurements of average molecular weights of the polymer, hydrogen peroxide concentrations and pH of the PVA solution were determinant factors in constructing a reliable photochemical model of the UV/H2O2 process. Experimental data showed a decrease in the PVA molecular weight and a buildup of the solution acidity. The experimental data also served to determine the kinetics rate constants of the PVA photochemical degradation and validate the model whose predictions are in good agreement with data. The model can provide a comprehensive understanding of the impact of the design and operational variables.  相似文献

Testing biodegradability of plastics under varied conditions of the environment as well as under laboratory conditions in accordance with valid international standards is very laborious, lengthy and often also economically demanding. For this reason, applicability was verified of gas chromatography to analyze gaseous phase when investigating the biodegradation course of plastics in an aqueous environment as an alternative to customary employed methods. A mathematical model of acid–basic CO2 equilibrium in a gas–liquid system was worked out, enabling to determine quantity of produced CO2 through chromatographic analysis of gaseous phase, in dependence on ratio of liquid and gas phase volumes (V l/V g) and on actual pH of liquid phase. Experimental conditions for organizing the tests were optimized. A ratio that proved suitable was V l/V g ≅ 0.1 at pH ≈ 7.1 of liquid phase. Under these test conditions, biodegradability of model samples, PHB, Gellan gum and Xanthan gum, was explored; course of biodegradation was studied through produced CO2 (values ) determined by analyzing gaseous phase through gas chromatography on the one hand, and through customary “titration” procedure on the other. With water-soluble polymers, the decrement in dissolved organic carbon (values D DOC) was also studied. Difference between values does not exceed 5%. The procedures in question are alternative “substituting” procedures for observing course of aerobic biodegradation of substances in an aqueous environment.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to study the influence of the K2S2O8 content on the properties of poly (vinyl alcohol, (PVA). Firstly, PVA was dissolved in distilled water by heating by heating at 70 °C and then K2S2O8 was added in PVA solution under stirrer. The viscosity of PVA solution in the presence of K2S2O8 was analyzed by Brookfield Viscometers. The effects of K2S2O8 contents, PVA solution, temperature and reaction time on the viscosity of PVA solution were investigated. This was confirmed by Brookfield Viscometers. It is clear that the viscosity of PVA solution in the presence of K2S2O8 increased as function of reaction time and PVA content in solution. Rate of modified PVA was proportional to K2S2O8 contents and temperature and its activation energy was 16 kJ/mol. The structure of PVA in the presence of K2S2O8 changed from original PVA confirmed by ATR-FTIR and solid state NMR. In addition, the thermal properties of PVA containing K2S2O8 were also studied by TGA.  相似文献

A novel sodium alginate-grafted poly(acrylic acid)/graphene oxide (NaAlg-g-PAA/GO) composite hydrogel was prepared via ultraviolet irradiation, and characterized by infrared spectroscopy spectrometer. X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. It was employed to adsorb NH4+ from aqueous solution and used as slow-release nitrogen fertilizers (SNFs). Result indicated that the adsorption process for NH4+ reached equilibrium within 50 min, with the adsorption capacity of 6.6 mmol g?1 even if 30 wt% GO was incorporated. The results of adsorption kinetic and isotherm were well described by the pseudo-second-order and Freundlich model. The thermodynamics analysis showed the adsorption process was spontaneous. The study indicated excellent water-holding ratio of soil with 2 wt% SNFs was 81.2%, and nitrogen release was up to 55.1% within 40 days in soil. Overall, NaAlg-g-PAA/GO could be considered as an efficient adsorbent for the recovery of nitrogen with the agronomic reuse as a fertilizer.  相似文献

The evaluation method of biomass carbon ratio of polymer composite samples including organic and inorganic carbons individually was investigated. Biodegradable plastics and biobased plastics can have their mechanical properties improved by combining with inorganic fillers. Polymer composites consisting of biodegradable plastics and carbonate were prepared by two different methods. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) composite was prepared by synthesis from l-lactide with catalyst and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) powders from lime. Poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) composite was prepared by hot-pressing the mixture of PBS powder and CaCO3 powders from oyster shells. The mechanical properties of composite samples were investigated by a tensile test and a compression test using an Instron type mechanical tester. Tensile test with a dumbbell shape specimen was performed for PBS composite samples and compression test with a column shape specimen for PLA composite samples. Strength, elastic modulus and fracture strain were obtained from the above tests. Biomass carbon ratio is regulated in the American Standards for Testing and Materials (ASTM). In ASTM standards on biomass carbon ratio, it is required that carbon atoms from carbonates, such as CaCO3, are omitted. Biomass carbon ratio was evaluated by ratio of 14C to 12C in the samples using Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS). The effect of pretreatment, such as oxidation temperature and reaction by acid, on results of biomass carbon ratio was investigated. Mechanical properties decrease with increasing CaCO3 content. The possibility of an evaluation method of biomass carbon ratio of materials including organic and inorganic carbons was shown.  相似文献

Because of the remarkable chemical structure of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), as well as the complex conditions of water, selecting an appropriate adsorbent for treating PFAS is critical. Adsorption needs to be environmentally friendly, low cost, and consider the types of adsorbents that work well in mixed PFAS solutions. In the present study, we used mixed PFAS to estimate the PFAS activity. This research aimed to evaluate and compare the efficacy of the adsorption of PFAS from water using different adsorbents: granular activated carbon (GAC), IRA 910 (strong anion resin), and DOWEX MB-50 (mixed exchange resin). Batch adsorption isotherms and kinetic studies were performed for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS). Freundlich models consistently described the kinetic behavior with a high correlation coefficient (R2 > 0.98). PFAS adsorption capacities on GAC and IRA910 were dependent on the chain length (PFOS > PFOA > PFHxS). The adsorption capacity of DOWEX MB-50 decreased because of the sulfonate effects (PFOS > PFHxS > PFOA). The rate constants (k2) that represented the adsorption of PFAS on different adsorbents observed within 96 h were accurately determined by the pseudo-second-order (PSO) model. GAC achieved followed the relationship k2(PFOS) > k2(PFOA) > k2(PFHxS). Furthermore, k2 of IRA910 decreased in the order of k2(PFOA) > k2(PFOS) > k2(PFHxS), implying that IRA910 promoted hydrophobicity more significantly on the adsorption of PFCAs than perfluoroalkane (-alkyl) sulfonic acids. The kinetics of DOWEX MB-50 revealed k2(PFHxS) > k2(PFOS) > k2(PFOA) because gel-type resins like DOWEX MB-50 are more suitable for shorter-chain PFAS. Further investigation is needed to determine the effect of organic matter under natural conditions and evaluate adsorptive selection caused by operational complexities.  相似文献

A laboratory bench-scale fixed-bed column study operated as a down-flow configuration was conducted to evaluate Sphagnum peat moss and crushed mollusk shells as natural low-cost adsorbents for the removal of heavy metals from aerated and unaerated synthetic landfill leachate. Columns were packed with 15 cm of prepared peat moss, or 15 cm adsorbent mixtures made up of peat moss and crushed mollusk shells (4.0–4.75 mm) from Lake Ontario at different bed depth ratios. Peat was found to have the best adsorption capacities in columns treating aerated synthetic leachate for cadmium and nickel with 78.6% and 83.8% removal efficiencies, respectively. The removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total nitrogen from the synthetic leachate was also monitored to evaluate the potential effects of biological activity on heavy metal adsorption. Columns receiving unaerated raw synthetic leachates did not show any significant removal of COD and total nitrogen, whereas some reduction in COD and total nitrogen was noted in the columns treating aerated synthetic landfill leachate. The results suggested that biological activity and biofilm growth could positively contribute to heavy metal retention within the fixed-media biosorption columns.  相似文献
