A mathematical model was used to examine the effects of choosing various units of sampling distance of an interleaved (two-pass)
acoustic survey on the adequacy of reconstructing patchy distribution fields. The model simulates fish or plankton patches
(or gaps) of different shapes and spatial orientations, and an interleaved survey by parallel or zigzag transects, along which
a unit of sampling distance is set. The efficiency of a survey is determined by the adequacy of a reconstructed field to that
originally generated, which is evaluated by calculating their correlations (r). Regarding immovable fields, the experiments conducted indicate that a patchy field can be reconstructed properly (r
2 > 0.70) if the distance between transects D < (1.5–2.0)R and the unit of sampling distance d < (1.5– 2.0)R
p. As, for regular surveys d < (1.0–1.5)R
p, it may be concluded that interleaved surveys are more efficient than regular ones because of the factor studied. In regard
to movable fields, a comparison of the results of interleaved surveys with those of regular surveys directly indicates that
the former may ensure a more adequate field reconstruction than the latter do. This fact confirms the previous conclusion
that an interleaved survey is expedient in cases where there is no preference regarding the position of a vessel for further

Adequacyof the reconstructed fields to those originally generated was evaluated by calculating their correlations (r). A prioriinformation on the autocorrelation radius for the field in thedirection of a survey (R) allows optimization of survey design and the algorithm of data analysis. A patchy field can be reconstructed properly (r > 0.80) if the distance between transects D < (1.0–1.5)R. If a priori information onthe field is not available, the autocorrelation radius should bedetermined when reconstructing the field, i.e. a posteriori. In cases of field movement, the criterion for choosing a survey direction is based on the relationship betweenthe dimension of moving patches in the direction of movement andthat of the surveyed area. A field can be reconstructed properly (r2 > 0.70) if the distance between transects D < (1.0–1.5)Rs and the unit of sampling distance d < (1.0–1.5)Rp. A posteriori determination of patchorientation allows reconstruction of the best field attainable onthe basis of the survey data. In cases of field movement, if thedimension of patches in the direction of movement exceeds that ofa surveyed area, a survey in the opposite direction gives bestresults; in contrast, if the dimension of moving patches is smaller than that of a surveyed area, it is reasonable to carryout a survey in the same direction. The criterion remains validwhen a survey is carried out by zigzag transects and a unit ofsampling distance is set along them. The results obtained indicate that, for a fixed transect spacing and a given number of sampling points on each full transect, zigzag pattern allowsless adequate reconstruction of an original distribution field (in cases of both immovable and movable fields) than corresponding parallel pattern. 相似文献

The United States funds a number of national monitoring programs to measure the status and trends of ecological and natural resources. Each of these programs has a unique focus; the scientific objectives are different as are the sample designs. However, individuals and committees, all well aware of the cost of ecological monitoring, have called for more effective monitoring programs. The objective of this paper is to summarize existing programs' statistical designs and discuss potential alternatives for improvement in national monitoring. Can we improve the current situation by providing an overall framework for the design or analysis of data from these disparate surveys? First, the paper summarizes the objectives of these surveys, compares and contrasts their survey designs as currently implemented, and determines what variables they collect. Through this process we identify commonalities and issues that impact our ability to combine information across one or more of the surveys. Three potential alternatives are presented, leading to comprehensive monitoring in the United States. 相似文献

Elemental analysis has played an important role in the characterization of soils since inception of the soil survey in the
US. Recent efforts in analysis of trace and major elements (geochemistry) have provided necessary data to soil survey users
in a variety of areas. The first part of this paper provides a brief overview of elemental sources, forms, mobility, and bioavailability;
critical aspects important to users of soil survey geochemical data for appropriate use and interpretations. Examples are
provided based on data gathered as part of the US soil survey program. The second part addresses the organization of sample
collection in soil survey and how soil surveys are ideally suited as a sampling strategy for soil geochemical studies. Geochemistry
is functional in characterization of soil types, determining soil processes, ecological evaluation, or issues related to soil
quality and health, such as evaluating suitability of soils for urban or agricultural land use. Applications of geochemistry
are on-going across the US and are documented herein. This analytical direction of soil survey complements historic efforts
of the National Cooperative Soil Survey Program and addresses the increasing need of soil survey users for data that assists
in understanding the influence of human activities on soil properties. 相似文献

Exxon Neftegas Limited, operator of the Sakhalin-1 consortium, is developing oil and gas reserves on the continental shelf
off northeast Sakhalin Island, Russia. DalMorNefteGeofizika (DMNG), on behalf of the Sakhalin-1 consortium, conducted a 3-D
seismic survey of the Odoptu license area during 17 August–9 September 2001. A portion of the primary known feeding area of
the endangered western gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) is located adjacent to the seismic block. The data presented here were collected as part of daily monitoring to determine
if there was any measurable effect of the seismic survey on the distribution and abundance of western gray whales. Mitigation
and monitoring program included aerial surveys conducted between 19 July and 19 November using the methodology outlined by
the Southern California High Energy Seismic Survey team (HESS). These surveys provided documentation of the distribution,
abundance and bottom feeding activity of western gray whales in relation to seismic survey sounds. From an operations perspective,
the aerial surveys provided near real-time data on the location of whales in and outside the feeding area, and documented
whether whales were displaced out of an area normally used as feeding habitat. The objectives of this study were to assess
(a) temporal changes in the distribution and abundance of gray whales in relation to seismic survey, and (b) the influence
of seismic survey, environmental factors, and other variables on the distribution and abundance of gray whales within their
preferred feeding area adjacent to Piltun Bay. Multiple regression analysis revealed a limited redistribution of gray whales
southward within the Piltun feeding area when the seismic survey was fully operational. A total of five environmental and
other variables unrelated to seismic survey (date and proxies of depth, sea state and visibility) and one seismic survey-related
variable (seg3d, i.e., received sound energy accumulated over 3 days) had statistically significant effects on the distribution and abundance
of gray whales. The distribution of two to four gray whales observed on the surface (i.e., about five to ten whales in total)
has likely been affected by the seismic survey. However, the total number of gray whales observed within the Piltun feeding
area remained stable during the seismic survey.

The Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) in 2002 released Position Statement, No. 3, Terrestrial Biological Surveys as an Element of Biodiversity Protection outlining how terrestrial fauna survey data are to be used and interpreted in the preparation of environmental impact assessments (EIA). In 2004, the EPA released its Guidance for the Assessment of Environmental Factors, Terrestrial Fauna Surveys for Environmental Impact Assessment in Western Australia, No. 56. This paper briefly assesses the adequacy of recent terrestrial fauna surveys undertaken to support publicly released EIAs and indicates that the EPA is not always adhering to its own position and guidance statements. This paper argues that the current fauna survey guidelines are in need of improvement. The approach and requirements of some other Australian states are briefly assessed to identify similarities and where improvements can be made to the Western Australian (WA) guidelines. This paper concludes with suggestions on how the process and the guidelines in WA can be revised to more adequately assess the impact of developments on terrestrial vertebrate biodiversity and ecosystem function. These suggestions may have relevance for other areas where fauna surveys are undertaken to support EIAs. 相似文献

To compare the results from two overlapping but unpaired synoptic surveys, a method using a geographic information system is proposed. The new method uses a GIS to create (i) minimum convex polygons (MCP) enclosing each set of survey data and (ii) Voronoi tesselations assigning area weights to each datum. The pairs of MCP and Voronoi maps are overlaid to produce a mosaic of polygons each with one datum assigned from each survey. The differences between the pairs weighted by the polygon areas provides the basis for statistical testing. Area-weighted means and variances of paired differences are computed and a z-statistic measures the significance of differences for the whole intersection area. A cross-product autocorrelation statistic provides an assessment of the spatial distribution of differences. Alternate, conventional methods are compared with the new method: analysis of variance (ANOVA), analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), and contour overlays. The four methods were applied to the comparison of two macrobenthic surveys conducted in Lake Erie. Measures for five different taxa were examined. The ANOVA and ANCOVA methods found many significant differences between surveys. Both methods were judged inappropriate as sampling data are not expected to be drawn from normally-distributed populations in spatial surveys. Differences between surveys were detected but were difficult to assess using contour overlays. The new method only found a significant difference in one taxon, an expected difference as members of that taxon were absent from most sites in one survey. 相似文献

The extent to which Environmental Assessment (EA) contributes to incorporating environmental values and objectives into decision-making (i.e. the effectiveness of EA) has been subject to much research. Still relatively little is known about how the effectiveness of EA is influenced by the specific features of EA systems and their context. International comparative research can shed more light on these relationships. In this paper we report on a survey of EA in Flanders, taking a similar approach as previous surveys in the Netherlands, UK and Denmark. We observe that the effectiveness of the Flemish project-based EA (EIA) is comparable to that in the other countries, whereas the Flemish plan-based EA (SEA) is more influential than the Dutch one (no data on Denmark and UK). As in the other countries, EA in Flanders has an influence on decision-making both before and after the EIA has been completed. According to respondents to the surveys, in all four countries the legal requirement is the main explanatory factor for EA effectiveness. The mechanisms by which EA characteristics and other factors contribute to EA effectiveness seem rather country-specific, however. Rather than trying to isolate the individual influence of factors we encourage more in-depth, qualitative and case-study based follow-up research in order to better understand the complex interplay between factors related to the EA system itself, how it is applied in practice and influenceds from its specific context. 相似文献

A 3D marine seismic survey of the Odoptu license area off northeastern Sakhalin Island, Russia, was conducted by DalMorNefteGeofizika
(DMNG) on behalf of Exxon Neftegas Limited and the Sakhalin-1 consortium during mid-August through early September 2001. The
key environmental issue identified in an environmental impact assessment was protection of the critically endangered western
gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus), which spends the summer–fall open water period feeding off northeast Sakhalin Island in close proximity to the seismic
survey area. Seismic mitigation and monitoring guidelines and recommendations were developed and implemented to reduce impacts
on the feeding activity of western gray whales. Results of the acoustic monitoring program indicated that the noise monitoring

The East Shetland Basin is one of the areas that the Fisheries Research Services (FRS) has concentrated on to assess the possible impacts of oil exploration and production on the marine environment. A stratified random survey of the sediment was carried out in 2002. TOCs were low across the basin and were positively correlated with grain size. The total PAH concentrations (2- to 6-ring parent and alkylated PAHs, including the 16 US EPA PAHs) were less than 150 microg kg(-1) dry weight and their composition indicated a predominantly pyrolytic input to the basin in 2002. Minor unresolved complex mixtures in the n-alkane profiles indicated a slight petrogenic input but further examination of the biomarkers (hopanes and steranes) showed a mixed North Sea and Middle Eastern source. The Middle Eastern source is likely due to inputs from shipping activity, as it is widely used as bunker fuel. Grid surveys were carried out in 1986, 1988-89 and 1994 and areas were selected for which there was data for all the historic grid surveys and the 2002 stratified random survey. Although referring to only a small part of the East Shetland Basin, comparison with these historic surveys shows clearly that the concentrations of Forties crude oil equivalents and total PAH concentrations were highest in 1988-89 and by 2002 had returned to concentrations the same as or less than observed in the original survey in 1986. 相似文献

In environmental monitoring, environmental impact assessments and environmental audits, topographical maps play an essential role in providing a means by which the locations of sampling sites may be selected, in assisting with the interpretation of physical features, and in indicating the impact or potential impact on an area due to changes in the system being monitored (e.g., spatially changing features such as wetlands). Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are hereby presented as a rapid method for monitoring spatial changes to support environmental monitoring decisions and policies. To validate the GNSS-based method, a comparison is made of results from a small-scale topographic survey using radio-based real-time kinematic GNSS (GNSS-RTK) and total station survey methods at Jack Finnery Lake, Perth, Australia. The accuracies achieved by the total station in this study were 2 cm horizontally and 6 cm vertically, while the GNSS-RTK also achieved an accuracy of 2 cm horizontally, but only 28 cm vertically. While the GNSS-RTK measurements were less accurate in the height component compared to those from the total station method, it is still capable of achieving accuracies sufficient for a topographic map at a scale of 1:1,750 that could support environmental monitoring tasks such as identifying spatial changes in small water bodies or wetlands. The time taken to perform the survey using GNSS-RTK, however, was much shorter compared to the total station method, thereby making it quite suitable for monitoring spatial changes within an environmental context, e.g., dynamic mining activities that require rapid surveys and the updating of the monitored data at regular intervals. 相似文献

with the seismic survey included aerial surveys during 19 July–19 November 2001. These aerial surveys documented the local
and regional distribution, abundance, and bottom feeding activity of western gray whales. Data on gray whale feeding activity
before, during and after the seismic survey were collected, with the whales assumed to be feeding on the benthos if mud plumes
were observed on the surface. The data were used to assess the influence of seismic survey and other factors (including environmental)
on feeding activity of western gray whales. A stepwise multiple regression analysis failed to find a statistically significant
effect (α = 0.05) of the seismic survey on frequency of occurrence of mud plumes of western gray whales used as a proxy to evaluate
bottom feeding activity in Piltun feeding area. The regression indicated that transect number (a proxy for water depth, related
to distance from shore) and swell height (a proxy for sea state) were the only variables that had a significant effect on
frequency of whale mud plumes. It is concluded that the 2001 seismic survey had no measurable effect (α = 0.05) on bottom feeding activity of western gray whales off Sakhalin Island.

Three types of soil-gas surveys were performed over the same location at an industrial facility. The surveys performed were (1) a passive technique using buried collectors, (2) an active technique in which samples were collected in the field by pumping with subsequent analysis at a field laboratory, and (3) a screening technique that employed a hand-held survey instrument. Each of the surveys had desirable features, but there was considerable variability in the quality of data obtained, cost, and ease of performance. The passive and active surveys provided excellent detection limits, but the passive technique does not provide data in real time. The active survey was also time-consuming and required an analytical chemist in the field. Neither the active nor the passive survey were able to delineate the plume of contaminated groundwater. The long-term water quality monitoring program implemented by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority in 1992 is extensive
and has provide substantial understanding of the seasonality of the waters in both Boston Harbor and Massachusetts Bay and
the response to improvements in effluent quality and offshore transfer of the effluent in September 2000. The monitoring program
was designed with limited knowledge of spatial and temporal variability and long-term trends within the system. This led to
an extensive spatial and temporal sampling program. The data through 2003 showed high correlation within physical parameters
measured (e.g., salinity, dissolved oxygen) and in biological measures such as chlorophyll fluorescence. To address the potential
sampling redundancies in the measurement program, an assessment of the impact of reduced levels of monitoring on the ability
to make water quality decisions was completed. The optimization was conducted by applying statistical models that took into
account whether there was evidence of a seasonal pattern in the data. The optimization used model survey average readings
to identify temporal fixed effects, model survey-average-corrected individual station readings to identify spatial fixed effects,
corrected the individual station readings for temporal and spatial fixed effects and derived a correlation model for the corrected
data, and applied the correlation model to characterize the correlation of annual average readings from reduced monitoring
programs with true parameter levels. Reductions in the number of sampling stations were found less detrimental to the quality
of the data for annual decision-making than reductions in the number of surveys per year, although there is less of a difference
in this regard for dissolved oxygen than there is for chlorophyll. The analysis led to recommendations for a substantially
lower monitoring effort with minimal loss of information. The recommendation supported an annual budget savings of approximately
$183,000. Most of the savings was from fewer surveys as approximately $21,000 came from the reduction in the number of stations
monitored from 21 to 7 and associated laboratory analytical costs. 相似文献

Rare, small or annual vegetation species are widely known to be imperfectly detected with single site surveys by most conventional
vegetation survey methods. However, the detectability of common, persistent vegetation species is assumed to be high, but
without supporting research. In this study, we evaluate the extent of false-negative errors of perennial vegetation species
in a systematic vegetation survey in arid South Australia. Analysis was limited to the seven most easily detected persistent
vegetation species and controlled for observer skill. By comparison of methodologies, we then predict the magnitude of non-detection
error rates in a second survey. The analysis revealed that all but one highly detectable perennial vegetation species was
imperfectly detected (detection probabilities ranged from 0.22 to 0.83). While focussed in the Australian rangelands, the
implications of this study are far reaching. Inferences drawn from systematic vegetation surveys that fail to identify and
account for non-detection errors should be considered potentially flawed. The identification of this problem in vegetation
surveying is long overdue. By comparison, non-detection has been a widely acknowledged, and dealt with, problem in fauna surveying
for decades. We recommend that, where necessary, vegetation survey methodology adopt the methods developed in fauna surveying
