Excessive levels of herbivory may disturb ecosystems in ways that persist even when herbivory is moderated. These persistent changes may complicate efforts to restore ecosystems affected by herbivores. Willow (Salix spp.) communities within the northern range in Yellowstone National Park have been eliminated or degraded in many riparian areas by excessive elk (Cervus elaphus L.) browsing. Elk browsing of riparian willows appears to have diminished following the reintroduction of wolves (Canis lupis L.), but it remains uncertain whether reduced herbivory will restore willow communities. The direct effects of elk browsing on willows have been accompanied by indirect effects from the loss of beaver (Castor canadensis Kuhl) activity, including incision of stream channels, erosion of fine sediments, and lower water tables near streams historically dammed by beaver. In areas where these changes have occurred, lowered water tables may suppress willow height even in the absence of elk browsing. We conducted a factorial field experiment to understand willow responses to browsing and to height of water tables. After four years of protection from elk browsing, willows with ambient water tables averaged only 106 cm in height, with negligible height gain in two of three study species during the last year of the experiment. Willows that were protected from browsing and had artificially elevated water tables averaged 147 cm in height and gained 19 cm in the last year of the experiment. In browsed plots, elevated water tables doubled height gain during a period of slightly reduced browsing pressure. We conclude that water availability mediates the rate of willow height gain and may determine whether willows grow tall enough to escape the browse zone of elk and gain resistance to future elk browsing. Consequently, in areas where long-term beaver absence has resulted in incised stream channels and low water tables, a reduction in elk browsing alone may not be sufficient for recovery of tall willow stands. Because tall willow stems are important elements of habitat for beaver, mitigating water table decline may be necessary in these areas to promote recovery of historical willow-beaver mutualisms. 相似文献

Summary In laboratory experiments, we tested the hypothesis that by living in larger shoals, juvenile threespine (Gasterosteus aculeatus) and blackspotted (G. wheatlandi) sticklebacks lower their risk of being parasitized by the crustacean ectoparasite Argulus canadensis. An increase in shoal size resulted in a lower average number of attacks received by individual fish, but had no negative effect on the attack performance (attack rate and attack success) of the parasites. In addition, more fish formed shoals and shoal sizes were larger in the presence of parasites. We conclude that ectoparasitism may have been a strong selective factor in the evolution of social behaviour in juvenile sticklebacks. 相似文献

The life-history traits of long-lived benthic littoral invertebrates remain poorly understood. In this study, we analysed patterns of growth in three abundant sublittoral sponges from the western Mediterranean Sea, chosen for their close phylogenetic relatedness, sympatric distribution, and contrasting amounts of photosymbionts: high in Ircinia fasciculata, lower in I. variabilis, and absent in I. oros. Sponge area, perimeter, number of oscula, and epibiont abundance were quantified from in situ digital images taken monthly for 1.5 years and volumetric growth rates were calculated from empirical area–volume relationships. Volumetric growth rates were different among species and coherent with the photosymbiont abundance: high in I. fasciculata (40.03 ± 4.81 % year?1, mean ± SE), low in I. variabilis (5.65 ± 6.11 % year?1), and almost nil in I. oros (?0.04 ± 3.02 % year?1). Furthermore, a marked seasonality was observed in the first two species, with greater growth during the warm season. The high growth rates of I. fasciculata were likely fuelled by symbiont-derived photosynthates and required to compete in the well-lit, algal-dominated habitats this species prefers. In contrast, I. variabilis and I. oros tended to dwell in shaded habitats, where competition from slow-growing invertebrates is intense, and featured lower growth rates. The flattened morphology and lower circularity of I. variabilis indicates a capacity for adaptation to any space that is freed, while I. oros had less oscula and was more massive and circular, suggesting a strategy of passive occupation and minimisation of biological interactions. The results show that even congeneric species living sympatrically can achieve important biomass using different growth and substrate occupation strategies. 相似文献

At least three general categories of environmental pressure - predation, resource distribution, and demographics - shape the costs and benefits of group-living for animals. Among the demographic factors that influence individual survival and reproduction, the composition of social groups can play an important role. Census data drawn from 26 populations of howler monkeys (Alouatta spp.) were used to determine if the composition of groups explained variation in their reproductive performance. Each group's reproductive performance was estimated by calculating the difference between the observed number of immatures and the number expected from its population average. Of four group structure variables tested, only one - the residual of the adult and subadult sex ratio - was a consistent correlate of reproductive performance across the howler monkey populations. Groups with a greater proportion of adult and subadult males contained more juveniles than expected from the population average. I propose that the survival or retention of immatures within howler monkey groups depends in part on the behavior of resident males. Of particular importance, the relative proportions of resident males and females were more informative than the absolute number of males or females. On this basis, I evaluate the possible role of males in protection from predation, conspecific aggression, and resource competition. The techniques used here can also be used to forecast major changes in demographic structure within populations. 相似文献

Coupled trophic-engineer interactions are potentially important for maintaining habitat function and ecosystem services. As ephemeral submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV), Ruppia maritima has a short well-defined growth-senescence cycle and should benefit from any ecological interaction that enhances its physical condition and longevity. Grass shrimp (Palaemonetes spp.) are abundant facultative grazers of epiphytic algae and conveyors of nutrients in tidal marsh and SAV habitats. Grass shrimp addition consistently enhanced Ruppia biomass and shoot density in a series of three field experiments conducted in Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Mississippi, USA. In two experiments, epiphyte grazing by grass shrimp enhanced Ruppia by inhibiting die-back during the mid- and latter stages of the Ruppia life cycle. Despite a nonsignificant epiphyte grazing effect, grass shrimp also enhanced Ruppia during its early growth stage in a third experiment. In that experiment, nutrient addition also significantly increased epiphyte biomass. Grass shrimp may have fostered the early growth of Ruppia through direct deposition of feces to the sediment in the third experiment. Grass shrimp play a pivotal trophic role in the maintenance of Ruppia through context-dependent interactions involving stage of the SAV life cycle, season, and nutrient limitation. 相似文献

Effects of dispersal and mating systems on the genetic structure of populations were evaluated by comparing five sea anemones:
four Epiactis species that brood their offspring to the juvenile stage and one Anthopleura species that broadcasts gametes and has pelagic, planktotrophic larvae. The anemones were sampled at sites ranging from British
Columbia to southern California between 1988 and 1992 and were analyzed by enzyme electrophoresis and by multilocus DNA-fingerprinting.
Results were only partially consistent with expectations. While all four brooding species had lower observed heterozygosities
than the broadcasting species, not all brooding species had greater population subdivision than the broadcasting species.
The self-fertile E. prolifera had the expected evidence of intense local inbreeding ( f = 0.955); unexpectedly, the cross-fertile E. lisbethae and E. ritteri also had similar departures from random mating ( f = 0.957 and 0.831, respectively) probably due to biparental inbreeding among near neighbors in small, highly subdivided populations.

Batch cultures of the marine unicellular centric diatom Chaetoceros calcitrans (Paulsen) Takano were maintained by serial subculturing every 4 d into nutrient-enriched natural sea-water medium supplemented with 350, 950 and 1 400 g-at Si l-1. The diatom cultures removed initial silica concentrations of 350 and 950 g-at l-1 from the medium within 2 and 3 d, respectively. About 30 g-at l-1 of the highest initial concentration remained in the medium after 4 d. The mean final cell density with an enrichment of 350 g-at Si l-1 was 3.43±0.26×104 cells l-1 (median cell volume = 77.5±5.0 m3); with 950 g-at Si l-1, 8.55±0.55×104 cells l-1 (50.0±4.5 m3); and with 1 400 g-at Si l-1, 9.72±0.48×104 cells l-1 (37.3±5.0 m3). There was no significant difference in the final total organic weight of cells produced, which was in the range of 170 to 190 mg per 250 ml culture. This consisted of proportionately more lipid and carbohydrate and less protein from the treatment with 350 g-at Si l-1 than from the 1 400 g-at Si l-1 treatment. 相似文献

Mercury (Hg) distribution in saltmarsh sediments and in three selected halophytes (Limonium narbonense, Sarcocornia fruticosa and Atriplex portulacoides) of a wetland system (Marano and Grado Lagoon, Italy) following a contamination gradient in sediments was investigated. The Hg uptake was evaluated at the root system level by calculating the enrichment factor (EF) and in the aboveground tissues by means of the translocation factor (TF). The related methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in the halophytes were also investigated with regard to the location of the sites and their degree of contamination. Hg concentration in halophytes seemed poorly correlated both with the total Hg in rhizo-sediments and with the specific plant considered, supporting the evidence that the chemico-physical parameters of sediments could significantly affect metal availability for plants. Hg concentrations in roots increased with depth and were 20-fold higher than content measured in related rhizo-sediments (high EF). A low content of Hg is translocated in aboveground tissues (very low TF values), thus highlighting a kind of avoidance strategy of these halophytes against Hg toxicity. MeHg values were comparable between the two sites and among species, but the translocation from below- to aboveground plant tissues was more active. 相似文献

Bumblebees can avoid recently depleted flowers by responding to repellent scent-marks deposited on flower corollas by previous visitors. It has previously been suggested that avoidance of visited flowers for a fixed period would be a poor strategy, since different plant species vary greatly in the rate at which they replenish floral rewards. In this study, we examined the duration of flower repellency after an initial bumblebee visit, using wild bumblebees (Bombus lapidarius, B. pascuorum and B. terrestris) foraging on four different plant species (Lotus corniculatus, Melilotus officinalis, Phacelia tanacetifolia and Symphytum officinale). We constructed a model to predict flower visitation following an initial visit, based on the nectar secretion pattern of the different plant species, the insect visitation rate per flower, and the search and handling times of bumblebees foraging on the plant species in question. The model predicts an optimal duration of flower avoidance which maximises the rate of reward acquisition for all bees. However, this optimum may be open to cheating. For two plant species, the evolutionary stable strategy (ESS) is a shorter duration of flower avoidance than the optimum. We found the duration of flower avoidance was markedly different among flower species and was inversely related to nectar secretion rates. The predicted ESSs for each plant species were close to those observed, suggesting that the key parameters influencing bumblebee behaviour are those included in the model. We discuss how bees may alter the duration of their response to repellent scents, and other factors that affect flower re-visitation. 相似文献

Mussels (Mytilus edulis) were exposed to the algaeAlexandrium ostenfeldii, Chrysochromulina polylepis, Gyrodinium aureolum, Gymnodinium galatheanum andHeterosigma akashiwo for 24 h; significant reductions in growth rate, as compared to the control, were observed after exposure toA. ostenfeldii, C. polylepis, G. aureolum andG. galatheanum at initial concentrations of 4.5 × 106, 110 × 106, 9 × 106 and 120 × 106 cells l–1, respectively. Exposure to high initial concentrations of the non-toxic algaeTetraselmis suecica (174 × 106 cells l–1) andIsochrysis galbana (610 × 106 cells l–1) showed no adverse effect on growth rate. When mussels with reduced growth were transferred to clean seawater, they recovered to > 90% of control growth within 2 to 4 d. Exposure to algal filtrates of the toxic algal cultures produced no reduction in growth rate. 相似文献

Since their official eradication from the US in 1943, the cattle-tick species Boophilus microplus and Boophilus annulatus, vectors of bovine babesiosis, frequently have penetrated a quarantine zone established along the Texas–Mexico border designed to exclude them. Inspection and quarantine procedures have eradicated reinfestations successfully within the US, but increasing acaricide resistance in Mexican B. microplus populations poses a threat to future eradication efforts. Better understanding of interrelationships among Boophilus populations, their hosts, and vegetation communities in south Texas could improve prediction of the behavior of reintroduced Boophilus populations and increase management options. To this end, we constructed a simulation model to evaluate how microclimate, habitat (i.e. vegetation) heterogeneity, and within-pasture cattle movement may influence dynamics of Boophilus ticks in south Texas. Unlike previous Boophilus tick models, this model simulates dynamics at an hourly time-step, calculates all off-host dynamics as functions of temperature and relative humidity, and runs with ground-level microclimate data collected bi-hourly in three different habitat types. Sensitivity analysis of the model showed that temperatures and relative humidities created by habitat type, as well as engorged female mass, influenced tick population dynamics most strongly. Host habitat selection, initial number of larvae per cow, and the number of cells into which the simulated pasture was divided also had a strong influence. Population dynamics appeared moderately sensitive to the proportion of Bos indicus in cattle genotypes and the larval attachment rate, while appearing relatively insensitive to factors such as mortality rate of engorged females. When used to simulate laboratory experiments from the literature, the model predicted most observed life-history characteristics fairly well; however, it tended to underestimate oviposition duration, incubation duration, and egg mortality and overestimate larval longevity, especially at low temperatures and high humidities. Use of the model to predict Boophilus population dynamics in hypothetical south Texas pastures showed that it reasonably generated qualitative patterns of stage-wise abundances but tended to overestimate on-host tick burdens. Collection and incorporation of data that appear not to exist for Boophilus ticks, such as larval lipid content and lipid-use rates, may improve model accuracy. Though this model needs refinements such as a smaller spatial resolution, it provides insight into responses of B. microplus or B. annulatus populations to specific weather patterns, habitat heterogeneity, and host movement. 相似文献

The distribution and behaviour of cormorants in estuarine environments was examined on the central coast of New South Wales,
Australia, with respect to habitat associations at different spatial scales. No consistent variation in abundance was found
for four species of cormorants (great Phalacrocorax carbo, pied P. varius, little black P. sulcirostris, and little pied P. melanoleucos) with state of tide (high and low) and time of day (early, middle, and late) at five estuarine locations. Differences in
abundance were found among locations that were not confounded by short-term temporal variation (i.e. time of day and tide).
Differences in abundance were detected among habitats (e.g. bays, creeks, and headlands) separated by hundreds of metres to
kilometres in different estuaries. Cormorants of all species were rare on the open coast and near the entrance of estuaries.
Abundances of cormorants varied greatly within and among creeks, bays, and river channels. Presence of seagrass beds explained
much of this variation and most of the cormorants swimming and feeding were found near seagrass. Mapping of seagrass beds
and the positions of cormorants at scales of metres to hundreds of metres showed a close relationship between the presence
of swimming and roosting beds and the presence of seagrass beds for P. melanoleucos and for P. carbo. We argue that cormorants make decisions to visit particular estuarine habitats, especially those with seagrass, where many
types of prey (e.g. fish and crustaceans) are probably most abundant. These choices must be interpreted in the context of
decisions that cormorants make on scales of hundreds to thousands of kilometres during periodic excursions to the interior
of Australia. Further, environmental threats to seagrass beds could impinge on these mobile visitors to the same extent as
on more permanent residents.

Due to indications that misidentification (largely confusion among dolphins of the genera Delphinus and Stenella) in the past had led to erroneous assumptions of distribution of the two species of common dolphins (Delphinus delphis and D. capensis) in the western Atlantic Ocean, we conducted a critical re-examination of records of the genus Delphinus from this region. We compiled 460 ‘plottable’ records, required support for confirmation of genus and species identifications,
and found many records lacking (and some clearly misidentified). When we plotted only the valid records (n = 364), we found evidence of populations in only three areas, and apparent absence throughout much of the tropical/subtropical
regions. Off the east coast of the US and Canada, D. delphis is found from the Georgia/South Carolina border (32°N) north to about 47–50°N off Newfoundland. Since the 1960s, they have
apparently been absent from Florida waters. There is no evidence that dolphins of the genus occur in the Gulf of Mexico. Reports
of common dolphins from most of the Caribbean Basin are also rejected, and the only place in that region where they are confirmed
to occur is off central-eastern Venezuela (a coastal D. capensis population). Off eastern South America, common dolphins appear to be restricted to south of 20°S. There is a coastal long-beaked
population found in the South Brazil Bight, and one or more short-beaked populations south and offshore of this (ranging south
to at least northern Argentina). The results are very different from commonly-accepted patterns of distribution for the genus
in the Atlantic. Most areas of distribution coincide with moderate to strong upwelling and common dolphins appear to avoid
warm, tropical waters. This study shows that great care must be taken in identification of similar-appearing long-beaked delphinids,
and that uncritical acceptance of records at face value can lead to incorrect assumptions about the ranges of the species
involved. 相似文献

Inter- and intraspecific patterns of reproductive effort in four species of cone shells (Conus spp.)
F. E. Perron 《Marine Biology》1982,68(2):161-167
Patterns of reproductive effort were examined both within and between 4 species of the tropical marine gastropod genus Conus from Hawaii in 1979. Caloric content was measured for the somatic tissues of female cone shells and for their egg capsule masses. These data were used to calculate (1) current reproductive effort, which was the ratio of annual energy produced as spawn to the sum of the annual energy produced as spawn plus the annual energy produced as somatic tissue; and (2) weight-specific reproductive effort, which was the ratio of annual energy produced as spawn to the total energy content of the female body just before spawning. For C. pennaceus, during the approximately 10 yr of life of a female, current reproductive effort rose from about 0.35 at 2 yr to about 0.85 at 10 yr. In contrast, weight-specific reproductive effort remained relatively constant throughout life for C. pennaceus (about 0.2 to 0.5), C. abbreviatus (about 0.2 to 0.3), C. flavidus (about 0.2 to 0.3) and C. quercinus (about 0.1 to 0.2). It is suggested that weight-specific reproductive effort may be useful as an index of the selective importance of the survival cost of present reproduction, while current reproductive effort more closely reflects the selective importance of energy allocation tradeoffs. Data on the 4 species of Conus examined support the hypothesis that reproductive effort should be positively correlated with extrinsic adult mortality and negatively correlated with the variability of juvenile survivorship. The data also suggest a possible relationship between reproductive effort and the cost of parental care. 相似文献

In the present investigation a pot culture experiment was conducted using sterile, phosphorus deficient soil to study the effect of flyash at 3 different concentrations (10g, 20g and 30g flyash/kg soil) on the infectivity and effectiveness of VAM fungus Glomus aggregatum in pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) cv Maruti. The flyash amendment in soil at all the 3 different concentrations was found to affect significantly the intensity of VAM fungal colonization inside the plant roots and also suppressed the formation of VAM fungal structure (vesicles and arbuscules) completely at higher concentration (30g flyash/kg soil). The response of the pigeonpea plants, as judged by their higher and dry weight, under the influence of flyash amendment in VAM fungus infested soils was found to be considerably less (though not significant enough) when compared to the control plants (without flyash) that have otherwise shown significant increase in growth over the plants without Glomus aggregatum inoculation. However, flyash amendment without VAM inoculation was also found to enhance the growth of plants as compared to control plants (without flyash and VAM inoculum). 相似文献

Global environmental changes are altering interactions among plant species, sometimes favoring invasive species. Here, we examine how a suite of five environmental factors, singly and in combination, can affect the success of a highly invasive plant. We introduced Centaurea solstitialis L. (yellow starthistle), which is considered by many to be California's most troublesome wildland weed, to grassland plots in the San Francisco Bay Area. These plots experienced ambient or elevated levels of warming, atmospheric CO2, precipitation, and nitrate deposition, and an accidental fire in the previous year created an additional treatment. Centaurea grew more than six times larger in response to elevated CO2, and, outside of the burned area, grew more than three times larger in response to nitrate deposition. In contrast, resident plants in the community responded less strongly (or did not respond) to these treatments. Interactive effects among treatments were rarely significant. Results from a parallel mesocosm experiment, while less dramatic, supported the pattern of results observed in the field. Taken together, our results suggest that ongoing environmental changes may dramatically increase Centaurea's prevalence in western North America. 相似文献

Habitat temperature and mitochondrial volume density (Vv(mt,mf)) are negatively correlated in fishes, while seasonal acclimatization may increase Vv(mt,mf) or the surface density of the mitochondrial cristae (Sv(im,mt)). The effect of temperature on invertebrate mitochondria is essentially unknown. A comparison of two articulate brachiopod
species, Liothyrella uva collected from Rothera Station, Antarctica in summer 2007, and Liothyrella neozelanica collected from Fiordland, New Zealand in winter 2007 and summer 2008, revealed a higher Vv(mt,mf) in the Antarctic brachiopod. The Sv(im,mt) was, however, significantly lower, indicating the Antarctic brachiopods have more, less reactive mitochondria. L. uva, from the colder environment, had larger adductor muscles in both absolute and relative terms than the temperate L. neozelanica. Furthermore, a seasonal comparison (winter vs. summer) in L. neozelanica showed that the absolute and relative size of the adductor increased in winter, Vv(mt,mf) was unchanged, and Sv(im,mt) was significantly increased. Thus, seasonal acclimatization to the cold resulted in the same number of more reactive mitochondria.
L. neozelanica was clearly able to adapt to seasonal changes using a different mechanism, i.e. primarily through regulation of cristae surface
area as opposed to mitochondrial volume density. Furthermore, given the evolutionary age of these living fossils (i.e. approximately
550 million years), this suggests that mitochondrial plasticity has roots extending far back into evolutionary history. 相似文献

AbstractTo investigate metal nanoparticle-induced phytotoxicity, Brassica nigra seeds were exposed to 50–1000?mg L?1 ZnO nanoparticles in culture media and 100–1000?mg kg?1 in soil. Plant length and weight were adversely affected in culture conditions, but with soil the effect was not significant. Determination of the radical-scavenging potential revealed that soil grown plants were less stressed than plants grown on culture medium. The total antioxidant and reducing power potential of soil grown plants were less variable compared to plants grown on culture medium. Total phenolic and flavonoid concentrations varied in plants, which changed with the nanoparticle’s concentrations in medium and soil. High performance liquid chromatography analysis showed that rutin was the major antioxidative molecule that significantly increased in nanoparticles-stressed B. nigra plants. 相似文献

Recently developed theoretical models of stage-structured consumer-resource systems have shown that stage-specific biomass overcompensation can arise in response to increased mortality rates. We parameterized a stage-structured population model to simulate the effects of increased adult mortality caused by a pathogen outbreak in the perch (Perca fluviatilis) population of Windermere (UK) in 1976. The model predicts biomass overcompensation by juveniles in response to increased adult mortality due to a shift in food-dependent growth and reproduction rates. Considering cannibalism between life stages in the model reinforces this compensatory response due to the release from predation on juveniles at high mortality rates. These model predictions are matched by our analysis of a 60-year time series of scientific monitoring of Windermere perch, which shows that the pathogen outbreak induced a strong decrease in adult biomass and a corresponding increase in juvenile biomass. Age-specific adult fecundity and size at age were higher after than before the disease outbreak, suggesting that the pathogen-induced mortality released adult perch from competition, thereby increasing somatic and reproductive growth. Higher juvenile survival after the pathogen outbreak due to a release from cannibalism likely contributed to the observed biomass overcompensation. Our findings have general implications for predicting population- and community-level responses to increased size-selective mortality caused by exploitation or disease outbreaks. 相似文献
