The vertical distribution, diel gut pigment content and oxygen consumption of Calanus euxinus were studied in April and September 1995 in the Black Sea. Gut pigment content of C. euxinus females was associated with diel vertical migration of the individuals, and it varied with depth and time. Highest gut pigment content was observed during the nighttime, when females were in the chlorophyll a (chl a) rich surface waters, but significant feeding also occurred in the deep layer. Gut pigment content throughout the water column varied from 0.8 to 22.0 ng pigment female–1 in April and from 0.2 to 21 ng pigment female–1 in September 1995. From the diel vertical migration pattern, it was estimated that female C. euxinus spend 7.5 h day–1 in April and 10.5 h day–1 in September in the chl a rich surface waters. Daily consumption by female C. euxinus in chl a rich surface waters was estimated by taking into account the feeding duration and gut pigment concentrations. Daily carbon rations of female C. euxinus, derived from herbivorous feeding in the euphotic zone, ranged from 6% to 11% of their body carbon weight in April and from 15% to 35% in September. Oxygen consumption rates of female and copepodite stage V (CV) C. euxinus were measured at different temperatures and at different oxygen concentrations. Oxygen consumption rates at oxygen-saturated concentration ranged from an average of 0.67 g O2 mg–1 dry weight (DW) h–1 at 5°C to 2.1 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 23°C for females, and ranged from 0.48 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 5°C to 1.5 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 23°C for CVs. The rate of oxygen consumption at 16°C varied from 0.62 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 0.65 mg O2 l–1 to 1.57 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 4.35 mg O2 l–1 for CVs, and from 0.74 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 0.57 mg O2 l–1 to 2.24 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 4.37 mg O2 l–1 for females. From the oxygen consumption rates, daily requirements for the routine metabolism of females were estimated, and our results indicate that the herbivorous daily ration was sufficient to meet the routine metabolic requirements of female C. euxinus in April and September in the Black Sea.Communicated by O. During two expeditions of the R.V. Polarstern to the Arctic Ocean, pack ice and under-ice water samples were collected during two different seasons: late summer (September 2002) and late winter (March/April 2003). Physical and biological properties of the ice were investigated to explain seasonal differences in species composition, abundance and distribution patterns of sympagic meiofauna (in this case: heterotrophs >20 µm). In winter, the ice near the surface was characterized by extreme physical conditions (minimum ice temperature: –22°C, maximum brine salinity: 223, brine volume: 5%) and more moderate conditions in summer (minimum ice temperature: –5.6°C, maximum brine salinity: 94, most brine volumes: 5%). Conditions in the lowermost part of the ice did not differ to a high degree between summer and winter. Chlorophyll a concentrations (chl a) showed significant differences between summer and winter: during winter, concentrations were mostly <1.0 µg chl a l–1, while chl a concentrations of up to 67.4 µmol l–1 were measured during summer. The median of depth-integrated chl a concentration in summer was significantly higher than in winter. Integrated abundances of sympagic meiofauna were within the same range for both seasons and varied between 0.6 and 34.1×103 organisms m–2 in summer and between 3.7 and 24.8×103 organisms m–2 in winter. With regard to species composition, a comparison between the two seasons showed distinct differences: while copepods (42.7%) and rotifers (33.4%) were the most abundant sea-ice meiofaunal taxa during summer, copepod nauplii dominated the community, comprising 92.9% of the fauna, in winter. Low species abundances were found in the under-ice water, indicating that overwintering of the other sympagic organisms did not take place there, either. Therefore, their survival strategy over the polar winter remains unclear.Communicated by O. Kinne, Oldendorf/Luhe  相似文献

Vertical distribution, chlorophylla (chla) and phaeopigment concentrations in the gut, and natural nitrogen isotope ratio ( 15N) were investigated for pelagic amphipodsThemisto japonica (Bovallius) collected from the Sea of Japan in July 1987. Differences in diel vertical migration behavior were clearly observed between small and largeT. japonica. Many small (<5 mm body length) amphipods appeared in the phytoplankton-rich shallow layers. Their gut pigment concentrations were higher (mean 0.52 ± 0.15µg chla g–1 amphipod) than those of large amphipods (mean 0.33±0.14µg g–1); this implies that the amphipods fed on a large amount of phytoplankton during the early stage of life. The 15N values of small amphipods were lower (5.7 to 6.3) than those of large amphipods (6.8 to 11.7), reflecting the lower trophic level of small amphipods compared to large ones. The 15N values for small amphipods were similar to those of herbivorous zooplankton. The amphipods' feeding behavior thus changes from herbivorous to carnivorous as they grow.  相似文献

The distribution, feeding and oxygen consumption of Calanus sinicus were studied in August 2001 on a transect across Yellow Sea Cold Bottom Waters (YSCBW) and two additional transects nearby. The distribution of C. sinicus adults and copepodites stage CV appeared to be well correlated with water temperature. They tended to concentrate in the YSCBW (>10,000 ind. m–2) to avoid high surface temperature. Gut pigment contents varied from 0.44 to 2.53 ng chlorophyll a equivalents (chl a equiv.) ind.–1 for adults, and from 0.24 to 2.24 ng chl a equiv. ind.–1 for CV copepodites. We found no relationship between gut pigment contents and the ambient chl a concentrations. Although the gut evacuation rate constants are consistent with those measured for other copepods, their low gut pigment contents meant an estimated daily herbivorous ingestion of <3% of body carbon in the YSCBW and <10% outside the YSCBW. However, based on estimates of clearance rates, C. sinicus feeds actively whether in the YSCBW or not, so the low ingestion rates probably reflect shortage of food. Oxygen consumption rates of C. sinicus ranged from 0.21 to 0.84 l O2 ind.–1 h–1, with high rates often associated with high temperature. From the oxygen consumption rates, daily loss of body carbon was estimated to be 4.0–13.7%, which exceeds our estimates of their carbon ingestion rates. C. sinicus was probably not in diapause, either within or outside the YSCBW, but this cold-water layer provides C. sinicus with a refuge to live through the hot, low-food summer.Communicated by T. The control mechanisms within the pelagic microbial food web of the oligotrophic Gulf of Aqaba and the northern Red Sea were investigated in the spring of 1999. Nutrient conditions and potential grazer impact were manipulated in a series of dilution experiments. Ambient nutrient concentrations and autotrophic biomass were very low (0.23–1.21 µmol NO3 l–1, 0.06–0.98 µmol NH4 l–1, 1.08–1.17 µmol Si l–1, 0.08–0.12 µmol P l–1, 0.15–0.36 µg chlorophyll a l–1). The planktonic community was characterized by low abundances [3.0–5.5×105 heterotrophic bacteria ml–1, 0.58–7.2×103 ultraphytoplankton <8 µm ml–1 (small eukaryotic photoautotrophs and Prochlorococcus sp., excluding Synechococcus sp.), 0.45–4.4×104 Synechococcus sp. ml–1, 0.32–1.2×103 heterotrophic nanoflagellates ml–1, 1.3–3.8×103 phytoplankton >8 µm l–1, 0.93–5.4×102 microzooplankton l–1] and dominated by small forms (0.2–8 µm). Dinoflagellates and oligotrichous ciliates were the most common groups in initial samples among the phytoplankton >8 µm and microzooplankton, respectively. Results show that bottom-up and top-down control mechanisms operated simultaneously. Small organisms were vulnerable to grazing, with maximum grazing rates of 1.1 day–1 on heterotrophic bacteria and 1.3 day–1 on ultraphytoplankton. In contrast, algae >8 µm showed stronger signs of nutrient limitation, especially when the final assemblages were dominated by diatoms. Synechococcus sp. were not grazed and only showed moderate to no response to nutrient additions. The high spatial and temporal variation of our results indicates that the composition of the planktonic community determines the prevailing control mechanisms. It further implies that, at this transitional time of the year (onset of summer stratification), the populations fluctuate about an equilibrium between growth and grazing.Communicated by O. Interactions between mercury and selenium accumulation and subcellular binding inAsterias rubens (L.), collected in 1987 from Lille Bælt at Middelfart, Funen, Denmark, were investigated in laboratory experiments. Sea stars exposed to 10µg Hg l–1 for 30 d accumulated mercury in body wall, tube feet and stomach linearly with time at 1.2, 1.2 and 0.5µg Hg g–1 dry wt d–1, respectively. Mercury was accumulated in pyloric caeca and coelomic fluid initially at 1.4µg Hg g–1 dry wt d–1 and 9.4 ng Hg ml–1 d–1, respectively; after 10 d uptake rates decreased. Sea stars exposed to 75µg Se-SeO 3 - - l–1 accumulated selenium linearly with time over 30 d in the stomach, pyloric caeca, tube feet and body wall at 2.0, 1.2, 1.2 and 0.6µg Se g–1 dry wt d–1. Sea stars exposed to 75µg Se-SeO 4 - - l–1 maintained selenium levels in the coelomic fluid at 75µg Se l–1 over 30 d. Exposure to selenate did not alter the selenium concentrations in the tissues. Sea stars exposed concurrently to 75µg Se-SeO 3 - - and 10µg Hg l–1 accumulated more mercury and selenium in tube feet and body wall than did sea stars exposed to the two elements alone. In pyloric caeca and stomach concurrent exposure reduced accumulation of both elements. Mercury was bound predominantly in the insoluble fraction of the tissues, and soluble mercury was bound in proteins of high (> 70 kilodaltons) or very low (< 6000 daltons) molecular weight. Ca. half of the selenium recovered was bound in the insoluble fraction, and soluble selenium was bound in proteins of high (> 70 kilodaltons) or very low (< 6000 daltons) molecular weight. Interaction between the two elements was exerted predominantly in the insoluble fraction of the tissues.  相似文献

Growth and herbivory of heterotrophic dinoflagellates (Gymnodinium sp.) from the Weddell Sea and the Weddell/Scotia Confluence were studied in 1988 in 100-liter microcosms. The microcosms were screened through 200-µm or 20-µm mesh nets and incubated for 12 d at 1 °C under artificial light. Mean cell volume of dinoflagellates was 1 000 to 1 500µm3, and that of their phytoplankton prey 360 to 430µm3. Dinoflagellate growth rate followed a Holling type II functional response, with a maximum growth rate of 0.3 d–1 and half-saturation food concentrations of 1.0µg chlorophylla l–1, 50µg C l–1, or 1 500 cells ml–1. Carbon budgets based on14CO2 assimilation and biomasses of phytoplankton and heterotrophic dinoflagellates suggested a balance between phytoplankton grazing loss and dinoflagellate consumption, assuming a dinoflagellate carbon conversion efficiency of 40%. Applying this to the functional response yielded estimates of maximum ingestion rate (0.8µg Cµg–1 C d–1, or 6 pg C dinoflagellate–1 h–1) and maximum clearance (0.8 to 1.2 × 105 body volumes h–1, or 80 to 120 nl ind.–1 h–1). The microcosm experiments suggested that heterotrophic dinoflagellates may contribute significantly to maintenance of low phytoplankton biomass in the Southern Ocean.  相似文献

Samples of the hermatypic coralGalaxea fascicularis were collected between April 1987 and April 1990 from coral reefs off Singapore (103 °45E; 1 °13N). Ca2+-activated adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) activity was detected in the plasma-membrane-enriched heavy microsomal fraction ofG. fascicularis. The high affinity component hadKm andVmax values of 0.0021 mM and 0.050 µmol Pi mg–1 protein min–1, respectively; corresponding values for the low affinity component were 0.15 mM and 0.85 µmol mg–1 protein min–1. The activity of the high affinity component was inhibited 80 and 50%, respectively, by the anticalmodulin drugs calmidazolium and chlorpromazine. The low affinity component of the Ca2+-ATPase may represent activities of alkaline phosphatase, Ca2+-ATPase from membranes of mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum, or calmodulin-dissociated plasma membrane Ca2+-ATPase resulting from the removal of Ca2+ by EDTA during the isolation process. The high affinity Ca2+-ATPase is probably the enzyme responsible for Ca2+ extrusion from the cells ofG. fascicularis. The high and low affinity components of this Ca2+-ATPase could use ATP and ADP as substrates. Maximum activities of both components were registered at pH 7 and at 45°C. Ruthenium red, a specific inhibitor of Ca2+-ATPase, inhibited the activities of the high and low affinity Ca2+-ATPase by 100 and 60%, respectively. Inhibition of the activities of both components was also observed with sulphydryl reagents (PCMB and mersalyl). However, DCMU, diamox, dinitrophenol, iodoacetate, fluoride, cyanide, ouabain, oligomycin B and L-phenylalanine had no effect on the enzyme activities.  相似文献

Variation in sediment metal concentrations in the River Avoca, which is severely polluted by acid mine drainage (AMD) discharged from the abandoned sulphur and copper mines in Avoca, is reported. A survey of surface and subsurface sediments was repeated after seven years during exceptionally low flow conditions in 2001. The present study found that the reference (up-stream) site used in the original 1994 study was itself impacted by AMD, showing sediment metal enrichment by AMD to be greater than originally thought. The new reference site contained elevated Pb (570 µg g–1) in the subsurface sediment due to abandoned Pb-Zn mines 25 km further upstream. Concentrations of Cu (43 µg g–1), Zn (349 µg g–1) and Fe (4.0%) were normal for uncontaminated rivers. All the downstream sites showed sediment metal enrichment arising from the AMD (Cu and Zn p < 0.001; Fe p < 0.01). Subsurface concentrations of metals immediately below the mixing zone were Cu 904 µg g–1 (sd 335), Zn 723 µg g–1 (sd 93), Fe 6.3% (sd 1.5) and Pb 463 µg g–1 (sd 279). Monthly variation in metal concentrations at sites was not significantly different (p > 0.05). Although surface sediment metal concentrations were more variable, they followed similar trends to subsurface sediment. There were no significant differences in the subsurface sediment concentrations for either Cu or Zn over the period 1994 and 2001 immediately below the mines, although at the lowest site Zn had decreased by 35% over the period (p < 0.01). However there was a significant (p < 0.01) decrease over the period in the Fe concentration at all the impacted sites. This corresponds to a reduction in Fe concentration in the AMD and indicates that some remediation has occurred in the river since 1994.  相似文献

The energetic cost of metamorphosis in cyprids of the barnacle Balanus amphitrite Darwin was estimated by quantification of lipid, carbohydrate and protein contents. About 38–58% (4–5 mJ individual–1) of cypris energy reserves were used during metamorphosis. Lipids accounted for 55–65%, proteins for 34–44% and carbohydrates for <2% of the energy used. Juveniles obtained from larvae fed 106 cells ml–1 of Chaetoceros gracilis were bigger (carapace length: 560–616 µm) and contained more energy (5.56±0.10 mJ juvenile–1) than their counterparts (carapace length: 420–462 µm; energy content: 2.49±0.20 mJ juvenile–1) obtained from larvae fed 104 cells ml–1. At water temperatures of 30°C and 24°C and food concentrations of 104 and 102 cells ml–1 (3:1 mixture of C. gracilis and Isochrysis galbana) as well as under field conditions (26.9±3.1°C and 2.2±0.8 µg chlorophyll a l–1), juveniles obtained from larvae fed the high food concentration grew faster than juveniles obtained from larvae fed low food concentration until 5 days post-metamorphosis. Laboratory experiments revealed a combined effect of early juvenile energy content, temperature and food concentration on growth until 5 days post-metamorphosis. After 10 days post-metamorphosis, the influence of the early juvenile energy content on growth became negligible. Overall, our results indicate that the energy content at metamorphosis is of critical importance for initial growth of juvenile barnacles and emphasize the dependency of the physiological performance of early juvenile barnacles on the larval exposure to food.Communicated by O. Grazing impact of microzooplankton on phytoplankton was investigated on the Grand Bank, Newfoundland, Canada, in April, July and October 1984, using a seawater dilution method. In April a large proportion of chlorophylla was in the microplankton size fraction (> 20µm) while in mid-summer and fall most was in the nanoplankton size fraction (< 20µm). Diatoms were the dominant phytoplankters in April, while undetermined flagellates and coccolithophores were abundant in other seasons. Major grazers were oligotrichous ciliates in all seasons. Instantaneous grazing rates on nanophytoplankton, as measured by changes in chlorophylla, varied from 0.12 to 0.43 d–1 and those on microphytoplankton from 0.19 to 0.68 d–1. Grazing rates did not change over 24 and 48 h intervals. This level of grazing corresponded to a daily loss of about 20 and 30% of standing stock of chlorophylla and about 50 and 70% loss of potential production in the two size fractions respectively. Taxon-specific grazing rates, calculated from microscopic enumeration, showed that small diatoms were grazed heavily, and their growth was controlled by grazing in late spring. In late summer and fall, undetermined flagellates and coccolithophores were also grazed at high rates but their growth rates were higher than the grazing rates, and therefore, were not controlled by microzooplankton. In general, microzooplankton grazed on whatever appropriate sized food was dominant in the experimental water. Their potential ability to control the growth of certain food species may be one of the causes determining the species composition of phytoplankton communities.  相似文献

Metabolic rates of the ctenophore Beroe ovata within the length range from 0.4 mm (newly hatched larvae) to 60 mm were investigated. At 20° the respiration rates (Q, µg O2 ind.–1 h–1) of individuals with wet weights (W, mg) less than or greater than 100 mg changed according to the equations Q=0.093W0.62 and Q=0.016W0.99, respectively. The weight-specific respiration rate of the juvenile ctenophores with wet body weights of 0.021–100 mg diminished approximately 20-fold (from 0.35 to 0.017 µg O2 mg–1 h–1, respectively), but did not change within the range from 100 to 30,000 mg. The difference in the slope of the regression lines seems to be attributable to the ontogenetic changes in B. ovata metabolism. For the tested temperature range of 10–28°, the mean Q10 coefficient was equal to 2.17±0.5. The basal metabolism of B. ovata narcotised by chloral hydrate was 4.5±0.9 times lower than total metabolism. Such a metabolic range is considered to be characteristic of aquatic invertebrates with high levels of locomotory activity.Communicated by O. Kinne, Oldendorf/Luhe  相似文献

The abundance and vertical distribution pattern of a halocyprid ostracod,Conchoecia pseudodiscophora, were investigated in the Japan Sea in 1985, 1987 and 1989. Vertical sampling from 500 m depth to the surface in the water around Yamato Rise revealed that this ostracod was second in dominance by number and third to fourth by biomass of the total zooplankton collected with a 0.35 mm mesh Norpac net. Horizontal net tows in Toyama Bay indicated that the major population ofC. pseudodiscophora was distributed below 250 to 300 m depth. No diel migration pattern was evident. Its contribution to total zooplankton there was 5 to 10% or more in terms of biomass. A total of five subadult instars (II to VI) and adult males and females were identified from instar analysis based on sizes and morphological characteristics of specimens collected with 0.10 mm mesh Norpac nets. Data on body length, wet weight and dry weight of each instar are presented. Carbon content of 35 to 48% of dry weight, and nitrogen content of 5.3 to 7.3% of dry weight, were recorded on fresh, freeze-dried specimens of selected instars (subadult Instars IV to VI, adult females). Water and ash contents of mixed specimens of these four instars were 76% of wet weight and 25% of dry weight, respectively. Feasibility of laboratory maintenance ofC. pseudodiscophora was tested, and it produced characteristic J shaped faecal pellets. Oxygen consumption rates of subadult instars V and VI, and adult female ranged 0.011 to 0.021µl O2 ind.–1 h–1 at 1 °C, or 2.9 to 6.1µl O2 (mg body N)–0.85 h–1 in terms of Adjusted Metabolic Rate (AMRo 2). There was no appreciable metabolic reduction inC. pseudodiscophora compared to other ostracods, despite their mesopelagic life mode. Subdominance in total zooplankton and nonreduced metabolic activity ofC. pseudodiscophora suggest that this species may be an important link in mesopelagic energy-flow and matter cycling in the Japan Sea.  相似文献

Feeding responses of the tentaculate depositfeeding polychaeteEupolymnia nebulosa (Montagu) were studied by measuring rates of uptake of three different14C-labelled diatoms (unialgal cultures ofNavicula incerta Grunow,Nitzschia acicularis Wm Smith, andNitzschia sp.). Worms used during this study were collected in the harbor of Port-Vendre (Western Mediterranean) during August 1986 (immature worms) and December 1987 (mature worms). Uptake rates were affected both by the length of the experiments and by the nature of the food offered. The highest rate of uptake (2.98 10–4 mg ashfree dry wt of algae mg–1 dry wt of worms h–1) was obtained during short-term experiments (4 h) with the smallest diatom (Nitzschia sp.). The lowest rate of uptake (0.21 10–4 mg ash-free dry wt of algae mg–1 dry wt of worms h–1) was also obtained withNitzschia sp., but for a long-term (48 h) experiment. There was no significant difference between rates of uptake of immature and mature worms.  相似文献

The life-history of the crown-of thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci) includes a planktotrophic larva that is capable of feeding on particulate food. It has been proposed, however, that particulate food (e.g. microalgae) is scarce in tropical water columns relative to the nutritional requirements of the larvae of A. planci, and that periodic shortages of food play an important role in the biology of this species. It has also been proposed that non-particulate sources of nutrition (e.g. dissolved organic matter, DOM) may fuel part of the nutritional requirements of the larval development of A. planci as well. The present study addresses the ability of A. planci larvae to take up several DOM species and compares rates of DOM uptake to the energy requirements of the larvae. Substrates transported in this study have been previously reported to be transported by larval asteroids from temperate and antarctic waters. Transport rates (per larval A. planci) increased steadily during larval development and some substrates had among the highest mass-specific transport rates ever reported for invertebrate larvae. Maximum transport rates (J max in) for alanine increased from 15.5 pmol larva–1 h–1 (13.2 pmol g–1 h–1) for gastrulas (J max in=38.7 pmol larva–1 h–1 or 47.4 pmol g–1 h–1) to 35.0 pmol larva–1 h–1 (13.1 pmol g–1 h–1) for early brachiolaria (J max in just prior to settlement=350.0 pmol larva–1 h–1 or 161.1 pmol g–1 h–1) at 1 M substrate concentrations. The instantaneous metabolic demand for substrates by gastrula, bipinnaria and brachiolaria stage larvae could be completely satisfied by alanine concentrations of 11, 1.6 and 0.8 M, respectively. Similar rates were measured in this study for the essential amino acid leucine, with rates increasing from 11.0 pmol larva–1 h–1 (or 9.4 pmol g–1 h–1) for gastrulas (J max in=110.5 pmol larva–1 h–1 or 94.4 pmol g–1 h–1) to 34.0 pmol larva–1 h–1 (or 13.0 pmol g–1 h–1) for late brachiolaria (J max in=288.9 pmol larva–1 h–1 or 110.3 pmol g–1 h–1) at 1 M substrate concentrations. The essential amino acid histidine was transported at lower rates (1.6 pmol g–1 h–1 at 1 M for late brachiolaria). Calculation of the energy contribution of the transported species revealed that larvae of A. planci can potentially satisfy 0.6, 18.7, 29.9 and 3.3% of their total energy requirements (instantaneous energy demand plus energy added to larvae as biomass) during embryonic and larval development from external concentrations of 1 M of glucose, alanine, leucine and histidine, respectively. These data demonstrate that a relatively minor component of the DOM pool in seawater (dissolved free amino acids, DFAA) can potentially provide significant amounts of energy for the growth and development of A. planci during larval development.  相似文献

The daily abundance of aloricate ciliates at Lime Cay, Jamaica, a shallow neritic site, ranged from 29 to 118 × 106 m–2 (0.97 to 3.93 × 106 m–3) between November 1985 and November 1986. Biomass was converted to kilojoules (1 kcal=4.1855 kJ) assuming 42% carbon, 20.15 kJ (g dry wt)–1, and 20% cell shrinkage. Biomass ranged from 0.40 to 3.00 kJ m–2 (13.3 to 100 J m–3; 0.28 to 2.08µg C l–1) with an annual mean of 1.11 kJ m–2 (36.8 J m–3; 0.764µg C l–1). Nanociliates (<20µm equivalent spherical diameter, ESD) dominated abundance, but microciliates (> 20µm ESD) dominated biomass.Strombidium, Strobilidium, Tontonia andLaboea species were conspicuous taxa. Annual production estimates of the aloricate assemblage, based on literature growth rates, ranged from 404 kJ m–2 yr–1 (37 J m–3 d–1) to 1614 kJ m–2 yr–1 (147 J m–3 d–1). A compromise estimate of 689 kJ m–2 yr–1 (i.e., 63 J m–3 d–1) is comparable to other estimates from tropical and subtropical regions. A model of annual energy flow through 11 planktonic compartments suggests the total ciliate assemblage (aloricates and tintinnines) to be as productive as metazoan herbivores and metazoan carnivores.  相似文献

The acute and long-term effects of neurotransmitters dopamine (DA), serotonin (SE) and norepinephrine (NE) on the feeding rates of Mytilus edulis veliger larvae were investigated through concentration-response curves. Increasing DA concentrations increasingly inhibited food uptake. Acute exposure to high levels of DA caused long-term inhibitory effects on feeding rates (10–5 MDA) and growth rates (3x10–4 MDA). Feeding activity was also inversely related to NE concentration. SE concentrations between 10–8–3x10–7 M supported enhanced feeding rates. Neither NE nor SE showed long-term inhibitory effects on feeding at concentrations <10–4 M. These results were consistent with the observed effects of the different neurotransmitters on the swimming pattern of the larvae. The experimental evidence supports the model of ciliary control in adult mussels, involving dual innervation of the ciliated cells of the velum, with excitatory serotonergic and inhibitory dopaminergic fibers.  相似文献

Photosynthetic properties of the common red algaGracilaria conferta, collected from the eastern Mediterranean Sea were investigated in 1989, in order to begin evaluating its adaptative strategies with regard to the inorganic carbon composition of seawater, and to test whether the alleged C4 photosynthesis of anotherGracilaria species is common within the genus. Net photosynthetic rates ofG. conferta were, under ambient conditions of inorganic carbon (ca. 10µM, CO2 and 2.2 mM HCO 3 - ), not sensitive to O2 over the range 10 to 300µM, and the CO2 compensation point was low (ca. 0.005µM). Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase was the major carboxylating enzyme, with a crude extract activity of 175µmol CO2 g–1 fresh wt h–1 while phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase were present at 70 and 20%, respectively, of that activity. No activities of the decarboxylases NAD-and NADP-malic enzyme could be detected. The14C pulse-chase incorporation pattern showed thatG. conferta fixes inorganic carbon via the photosynthetic carbon reduction cycle only, with no evidence for photosynthetic C4 acid metabolism. Photosynthesis at the natural seawater pH of 8.2 was, at 25°C and saturating light, saturated at the ambient inorganic carbon concentration of 2.5 mM. It is proposed that, under ambient inorganic carbon conditions, a CO2 concentrating system other than C4 metabolism provides an internal CO2 concentration sufficient to suppress the O2 effect on ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase and, thus, on photorespiration, in a medium where the external free CO2 concentration is lower than theK m(CO2) of the carboxylating enzyme. Since inorganic carbon, under natural saturating light conditions, seems not to be a limiting factor for photosynthesis ofG. conferta, it likely follows that other nutrients limit the growth of this alga in nature.  相似文献

Ammonium excretion of a dense population (~1 500 individuals m–2) of the ophiuridOphiothrix fragilis (Abildgaard) was measured in the Dover Straits (French coast) between May 1989 and March 1990: the excretion rate varied from 4.8 µg N g–1 dry wt h–1 in November to 12.8 µg N g–1 dry wt h–1 in June. Mean individual ammonium excretion,E, wasE=0.019t +1.26 (whereE=µg N individual–1 andt=time in min;r=0.80;N=81). Variations in the ammonium excretion rate during a tidal cycle appeared to arise from variations in the duration of the suspension-feeding activity ofO. fragilis, which was governed by the strength of the tidal current. During short-term starvation, excretion was low (E=0.009t+1.47;r=0.91;N=17), increasing with increasing length of starvation [E=4.62lnt–2.5;r=0.95;N=17], as observed for other echinoderms; this could be due to catabolism of tissue. The daily ammonia flux from thisO. fragilis population to the water column was estimated at 41 mg N m–2 d–1.  相似文献

The effect is studied of different inorganic phosphorus concentrations on changes in growth rates of 7 diatom species isolated from the plankton of the Black Sea. All species examined increase their cell-division rate with increasing phosphorus concentration in the medium. The phosphorus concentrations have been determined above which division rate is not limited by phosphorus content in the medium. The non-limiting concentration amounts to V/V m =0.9. In the species studied, non-limiting concentrations ranged from 1 to 30 g P/1. The highest values were obtained for relatively large-sized species. The ratio of cell surface to volume tended to be inversely related to the growth-rate-limiting concentration. Minimal values of phosphorus content in cells have been calculated to range from 0.6 to 4.0·10–17 g.at–P/–3. Based on a comparison of phosphate levels in the Black Sea with experimentally-derived rate-limiting concentrations, it is concluded that phosphorus does not limit the reproduction rate of phytoplankton in the more productive regions of the Black Sea or in the lower strata of the euphotic zone.  相似文献
