Colonies of the soft coral Lobophytum pauciflorum (Ehrenberg, 1834) (Coelenterata: Octocorallia: Alcyonacea: Alcyoniidae), some of which were heavily overgrown by the algae Ceranium flaccidum (Kuetzing) Ardissone and Enteromorpha sp., and other minor epizoites, were collected at Taylor Reef (17°50S; 146°35E) in the Great Barrier Reef. Overgrown colonies contained the diterpene 2-epi-sarcophytoxide as the major secondary metabolite, while conspecific colonies with clean polyparies contained two diterpenes in approximately equal amounts: 14-hydroxycembra-1,3,7,11-tetraene and 15-hydroxycembra-1,3,7,11-tetraene. By contrast, twenty conspecific pairs of overgrown and clean colonies of other alcyoniid soft corals collected from Pelorus Channel, Palm Island Group (18°34S; 146°29E), showed no chemical differences within in the pairs. Cultures of a common species of Ceramium [C. codii (Richards) Mazoyer] were incubated with different concentrations of nine soft-coral-derived diterpenes and significant algal growth inhibition was observed in many cases. It appears that terpenoids from soft coral may contribute to the lack of epizoic organisms on soft-coral polyparies.  相似文献

The present paper deals with ecological aspects of the pulmonate gastropod Siphonaria lessoni (Blainville, 1824), a common member of fouling communities in Mar del Plata's port (38°0817 S, 57°3118 W). Populations on colonized panels of an experimental raft were studied during three annual cycles, to determine feeding habits, growth and various factors which restrict their distribution on floating substrata. Although S. lessoni is harmless as a fouling organism, its grazing on the algal belt clears a part of the substratum's surface, which is then quickly colonized by truly aggressive organisms such as Balanus amphitrite.  相似文献

The present paper describes the procedures adopted for axenic or pure cultivation of the marine blue-green alga Trichodesmium erythraeum (Ehr.)1 in the laboratory. Strains of T. erythraeum were isolated from the nearshore waters of the Bay of Bengal (11°29 N 79°49 E) during the pre-bloom period in March, 1965, at a depth of 9 to 12m. Modified, enriched, Erdschreiber medium was used for laboratory cultivation of T. erythraeum. A differential concentration of streptomycin 6 mg/100 ml, tetracycline 5 mg/100 ml and sulfadiazine 4 mg/100 ml was used to inhibit the microbial growth in cultures. Difficulties experienced in the initial culture stages of T. erythraeum and the necessary specific instructions employed are described in detail.  相似文献

A total of 129 specimens ofLepidopsetta bilineata (Ayres) were collected in the eastern Bering Sea (57°02–58°11N; 161°58–164°38W) between 28 August and 7 September 1984. Examination of its stomach and intestine contents revealed that polychaetes, gammarid amphipods and echiuroids constitute the bulk of its diet. Prey type is related to fish size. Juveniles consume more mobile prey, such as small crustaceans (gammarid amphipods, cumaceans, carideans), while adults, although still continuing to feed on gammarid amphipods, preferentially feed on infaunal organisms such as polychaetes, echiuroids and mollusks. Some prey, such as echinoderms, fishes and urochordates, were encountered only in stomachs, which resulted in a higher index of feeding diversity for this organ. Rock sole feeds primarily during daylight hours, peaking at dusk. Its daily ration was estimated as 0.49, 1.12, and 1.61% of fish body weight from contents of stomach, intestine, and stomach plus intestine, respectively.  相似文献

The recolonization by harpacticoid copepods of patches disturbed by stingrays [Dasyatis sabina (LeSeur)] feeding in a subtidal (2–3 m depth) site off the Florida gulf coast (Lat. 29°54.55N, Long. 84°31.45W) was followed. Samples from disturbed patches could no longer be distinguished from control samples in terms of numbers of harpacticoids 29 h after disturbance. No species became significantly disproportionately abundant during the recovery suggesting that small-scale natural disturbances are not an important organizing force in this community.  相似文献

The northern distribution limit of giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera (Agardh), along the Pacific coast of North America is relatively stable near Point Año Nuevo, California, but its southern limit has varied over hundreds of kilometers along the Baja California peninsula during the past 20 years. The factors that drive this variability in the southern limit were examined by: (1) quantifying the abundances of M. pyrifera and the subsurface stipitate kelp, Eisenia arborea (Areschoug), near M. pyriferas then southern limit at Punta San Roque (27°15N; 114°42W) on ten occasions between August 1997 and June 2002 (prior to and following the 1997/1998 El Niño Southern Oscillation); (2) initiating a field manipulation at Punta San Roque in June 2000 to examine competition between these two kelp species; and (3) surveying 20 additional sites near Punta San Hipólito (27°01N; 114°00W) in June 2002 to determine whether M. pyrifera populations had recovered to their pre-1982/1983 El Niño southern range limit after ~20 years of absence. These observations and the experimental results suggest that M. pyrifera is removed from its southern limit by the high temperatures and large waves associated with El Niños, while E. arborea is able to survive and recruit in high densities and thereby delay or even prevent M. pyriferas recovery. An inverse relationship was observed between these two species over the 5-year study. The field experiment showed that at both 4 months and 1 year after areas occupied by E. arborea were cleared, substantial recruitment of M. pyrifera occurred, while recruitment was negligible in uncleared areas. This study suggests that the southern range limit of M. pyrifera is determined by increased mortality and recruitment failure following the warm temperatures and low nutrient conditions associated with El Niños, limited substrate availability, and by competition with the more persistent populations of E. arborea.Communicated by J.P. Methanol extracts of freshly harvested cells of the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum were found to produce a feeding deterrent effect in the copepod Tigriopus californicus. Bioassay guided fractionation of the methanol extracts led to the isolation of four compounds possessing feeding deterrent activity. The compounds were identified as apo-10-fucoxanthinal (1), apo-12-fucoxanthinal (2), apo-12-fucoxanthinal (3), and apo-13-fucoxanthinone (4) by detailed spectroscopic analysis and comparison with authentic compounds produced semi-synthetically from fucoxanthin. Compounds 1 to 4 exhibited feeding deterrent responses in T. californicus at concentrations of less than 20 ppm.  相似文献

For crustaceans with a well-defined annual molting season, such as adult female Dungeness crabs (Cancer magister Dana), setal molt staging can, in principle, be used to predict molting destiny of individual crabs. Size-specific predictions of molting probability could, in turn, be useful for estimating mortalities due to molting. Female Dungeness crabs were collected January–March 1997 at depths of 10–30 m off the California coast, USA (41°N). Intermolt stage A1–C4 and premolt stages D0, D1, D1, D1 and D2 were described based on features of the branchial epipod. Laboratory experiments suggested that stage D1 was the earliest stage beyond which eventual molting was inevitable so that molting destiny could be determined. Estimated mean number of days from the beginning of stage D1 to molting was 85. Estimated individual stage durations, based on laboratory experiments, were 24, 51, –4, 18, and 20 days, respectively, for stages D0, D1, D1, D1, and >D2. The estimated –4 days for stage D1 suggests that this stage must be very brief and raises a question of its utility in designation of molt stages. Molt staging of three field samples, 300–600 crabs in each, collected prior to the 1997 annual molting season, indicated an increase in the size and frequency of crabs staged D1 or later as the time to molt approached, although crabs of 150 mm carapace width and larger showed few signs of molt preparation. Because the duration of the molting season (approximately 120 days) for adult female C. magister in northern California exceeds the estimated maximum duration of reliable prediction of molting destiny (85 days), it does not appear that molt staging can be used to predict molting destiny in this population. However, the procedures that we have used in this paper for application to female C. magister might be used with success for other crustaceans if the duration of stages D1 to molting exceeds the duration of the molting season, and furthermore may be used for describing temporal molting trends.Communicated by J.P. Intertidal organisms may employ circatidal rhythms to track the tidal cycle, but tidal patterns may vary within a species range and necessitate adaptation to the local tides. Circatidal rhythms were examined in populations of the eastern Pacific fiddler crab Uca princeps (Smith) from four sites with differing tidal characteristics, La Paz (24°10N; 110°21W), San Blas (21°33N; 105°18W) and Manzanillo (19°6N; 104°24W), Mexico (lower amplitude, mixed semidiurnal tides) and Mata de Limon, Costa Rica (9°55N; 84°43W) (high-amplitude, semidiurnal tides). Local tides were characterized by harmonic constants of M2, S2, K1, and O1, partial tides that largely determine their semidiurnal and diurnal features. Rhythmic structure in continuously recorded locomotor activity of individual crabs held under laboratory conditions was described by cosinor and periodogram methods of time-series analysis. Both daily and circatidal rhythms were found in crabs studied in light–dark cycles set to local conditions at the time of collection. Crabs at all four sites shared a tendency toward bimodality, with a mid-morning activity peak and varying degrees of nocturnal activity. Circatidal rhythms closely matching the period of the 12.42-h M2 partial tide were consistently present at all sites except Manzanillo. At Mata de Limon, the circatidal rhythm clearly dominated locomotor activity, but was strongly modulated by a daily rhythm in a repeating pattern at a semilunar interval. In contrast, the amplitude of the daily rhythm was higher than that of the circatidal rhythm in crabs from the three mixed tide sites on the Mexican coast, where the tidal pattern is dominated by a diurnal inequality arising from the diurnal K1 and O1 partial tides. These results suggest that populations of U. princeps use both daily and circatidal timing systems to track local forms of the tide generated by their M2, S2, K1, and O1 geophysical counterparts.Communicated by J.P. The nutrient status (limitation vs sufficiency) of dinoflagellates (zooxanthellae) symbiotic with reef corals in Bermuda was assessed in 1989 and 1990 by measuring the enhancement of dark carbon fixation with 20 M ammonium by isolated symbionts. A colony ofMadracis mirabilis was kept in the laboratory and fed daily or starved for one month. Symbionts from fed portions of the colony had ammonium-enhancement ratios (NH 4dark + ; SWdark;SW=seawater without added ammonium) similar to those of the original field population (1.2 to 1.3). Ammonium-enhancement ratios increased with starvation of the host (x1.7) as did values forV D:V L [(ammonium dark rate-seawater dark rate): light rate in seawater]. Both parameters indicated decreasing nitrogen sufficiency of the algae when the host was not fed, but starvation appeared to affect these algae less than symbionts of sea anemones. Field samples of zooxanthellae fromM. mirabilis (Three Hill Shoals and Bailey's Bay Flats) yielded results similar to those for fed corals, but those taken from Bailey's Bay Flats in May 1990 yielded exceptionally high values for enhancement (>3) andV D:V L indicating pronounced nitrogen limitation at the time of sampling. We sampled zooxanthellae from populations ofMontastrea annularis at 8 m (Three Hill Shoals) and 24 m (Soldier's Point) depths. Enhancement andV D:V L values for zooxanthellae from the 8 m corals were density-dependent: symbionts from corals with normal symbiont densities displayed the most nitrogen limitation (enhancement values=1.4 to 2.0), while those from bleached corals with lower density exhibited enhancement andV D:V L values typical of nitrogen-sufficient algae. Symbionts isolated from the 25 m corals yielded the highest values, and appeared to exhibit the least nitrogen-sufficiency for this species.  相似文献

The seastar Marthasterias glacialis (L.) was seen to spawn in two sea inlets, Lough Hyne (9°18W; 51°30N) and Mulroy Bay (7°42W; 55°12N), Ireland. Spawning occurred during the afternoon and early evening between 13.30 and 21.30 hrs British Summer Time (BST) on sunny days during July and August, 1978. Groups remained assembled for days prior to spawning. Solitary and grouped seastars arched themselves and released their gametes freely. Local moderate onshore winds on sunny days resulted in increases of sea temperature which often induced spawning. Males observed spawning ranged from 2.5 to 26 cm and females from 9 to 22 cm in diameter over the period 1978–1985.  相似文献

An antibiotic-producing Chromobacter was isolated from a sea-water sample from the North Pacific Gyre. The bacterium produces 3 bromine-containing metabolites: tetrabromopyrrole, 2-(2-hydroxy-3, 5-dibromophenyl)-3, 4, 5-tribromopyrrole, and hexabromo-2, 2-bipyrrole. It also synthesizes n-propyl 4-hydroxybenzoate and 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde. Some of these compounds were shown to be responsible for autoinhibition of the Chromobacterium itself, as well as for antibiotic action against other kinds of bacteria.  相似文献

For elucidation of the metabolism of the endocrine disruptor nonylphenol by Sphingomonas sp. strain TTNP3, the degradation of an isomer of nonylphenol, 4(2,6-dimethyl-2-heptyl)-phenol, has been studied. As in the case of 4(3,5-dimethyl-3-heptyl)-phenol, the metabolism of this nonylphenol isomer leads to the formation of the NIH-shifted product 2(2,6-dimethyl-2-heptyl)-1,4-benzenediol (NIH: National Institute of Health), but also to the alkoxy derivative 4(2,6-dimethylheptan-2-yloxy)phenol as additional metabolite. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report describing the formation of alkoxyphenol as a degradation product of nonylphenol. Additionally, these results provide for the first time evidence for slight differences in the biodegradation of the isomers of nonylphenol.  相似文献

The mode of development was ascertained for 14 of the 16 species of sea stars known to occur in shallow waters of McMurdo Sound, Antarctica (77°51S; 166°40E). The species were collected between September 1984 and December 1985. Females of three species,Odontaster validus, O. meridionalis andPorania antarctica, spawn small to moderate eggs (0.17 to 0.55 mm), have a high fecundity, and produce feeding larvae. Females of an undescribedPorania species spawn a few eggs (150 to 310) that are 0.55 mm in diameter and develop into demersal non-feeding larvae. Females ofDiplasterias brucei andNotasterias armata produce a few (<300) large eggs (2.8 to 3.5 mm) and brood their young. Females of the remaining eight species have moderate fecundity and produce pelagic non-feeding larvae, as determined from egg type (buoyant, 0.54 to 1.28 mm diam) and direct observations of spawning and development. The high incidence (11 out of 14 species; 79%) of non-feeding development is consistent with predictions that environmental conditions in high-latitude regions are unfavorable for planktotrophic development. Nonetheless, most of the species surveyed (11 out of 14) had pelagic larvae, which contradicts inferences of unusual selection for benthic development in the Antarctic.  相似文献

The behaviour of the oral arms of Pelagia noctiluca (Forsskål) has been investigated in open sea predation and in predation induced both in the laboratory and the natural environment. Specimens were first studied in the field and then collected from coastal aggregations in the Gulf of Trieste, North Adriatic Sea, in December 1985 (Lat. 13°40 E, Long. 45°42 N) and in June 1986 (Lat. 13°39 E, Long. 45°43 N). The results of laboratory experiments and in situ observations, recorded on videotapes and photographs, show that the marginal tentacles are utilized to: (1) paralyze the prey; (2) contract and bend inward towards the nearest oral arm. Occasionally the tentacle does not contract and the prey is released; thus prey selection may occur. The oral arms are therefore involved in the: (1) transport of prey from the tentacle to the gastric cavity; (2) catching of motionless prey; (3) anchoring the medusa to the substratum. A similar feeding pattern can explain the survival of several specimens of P. noctiluca near the bottom during the winter of 1985/1986 in the Gulf of Trieste (North Adriatic Sea) in spite of the severe climatic conditions.  相似文献

The movement and digestion of food in the gut ofOligometra serripinna (Carpenter) were studied at Lizard Island (14°3842S; 145°2710E) in the austral winter of 1986. Feather stars in the laboratory were fed a brief, small meal of brine shrimp nauplii and killed at increasing time intervals thereafter. Histological reconstructions showed that the ingested nauplii progressed along the digestive tract surprisingly quickly. Some nauplii were found in the mid and hind intestine in only 30 min, and all of the nauplii had reached the hind intestine and rectum in 1 h. Digestion of the nauplii had started at 1 h, and only a few fragments of naupliar exoskeleton remained in the hind intestine and rectum 5 h after the start of feeding. Videotape analysis showed that no fecal pellets were released during this experiment. In the natural environment ofO. serripinna, ingested particles may similarly be transported quickly to the hind part of the gut and digested there — when feather stars were fixed in the field, most of the gut contents were found in the hind intestine and rectum.O. serripinna, which efficiently rejects inert particles before they are ingested, usually defecates infrequently (probably not more than once over a span of many hours) and differs from some other feather stars that ingest numerous inert particles and defecate much more frequently. When specimens ofO. serripinna were fed continuously on brine shrimp nauplii,Artemia sp. (San Francisco strain), in the laboratory, the feather stars fed gluttonously, packing their guts with several hundred nauplii in 1 to 2 h. Thereafter, superfluous feeding began (i.e., further ingestions appeared to force undigested nauplii, some of them still living, out of the anus). These observations suggest thatO. serripinna usually feeds at relatively modest rates in its natural habitat, but can feed gluttonously to take advantage of infrequent patches of highly concentrated, nutritious particles (e.g. copepod swarms, migrating demersal zooplankton, and invertebrate gametes from mass spawnings). It is likely that such patches of nutritious particles are usually small enough to drift out of reach of the feather stars before gluttonous feeding proceeds to superfluous feeding. Opportunities for superfluous feeding in nature are probably very infrequent (e.g. ingestion of coral gametes and embryos after a mass spawning), and the feather stars evidently have no behavior that stops further ingestions after the gut becomes filled to capacity.  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of the late-stage phyllosoma larvae of Panulirus longipes cygnus George and the distribution and densities of the final larval stage, the puerulus, both in the plankton and at settlement along the coast, were investigated. A total of 3,617 late-stage phyllosoma (Stages VI to IX) and 301 puerulus larvae were caught at 187 plankton stations during the July to November periods 1974, 1975 and 1976 off the west coast of Australia between 29°00 to 32°30S and 113°30 to 115°00E. The depth range sampled was 0 to 35 m on the continental shelf and 0 to 90 m off the shelf. During onshore/offshore cruises with similar sampling effort on and off the shelf, 1,169 late-stage phyllosoma larvae were taken, of which only 9 were caught on the shelf, and these near the outer edge. A series of cruises sampling two areas beyond the shelf near 29°30 and 32°00S yielded 2448 late-stage phyllosoma, with greater densities of larvae in the northern location. The settlement of puerulus-stage larvae along the coast in the same geographical range was also greater in the north than in the south. The data from the onshore/offshore cruises showed a definite effect of moon phase on numbers of puerulus larvae caught on the shelf, with higher catches near new moon. The low numbers of puerulus larvae (usually 0, 1 or 2 individuals) caught at all stations showed that the puerulus stage is sparsely distributed in the plankton. Fewer puerulus larvae were present at the surface than at lower depths, but it was not possible to determine a depth preference for the puerulus between 10 m and the lowest depths sampled because of the low catch numbers. No relationships were found between puerulus larvae density and surface-water temperature, salinity, or plankton biomass at each station. Data on the larval distributions indicate that, near the end of their planktonic existence, the majority of the late-stage phyllosoma larvae of P. longipes cygnus are not carried onto the shelf, where mixing of oceanic and continental shelf waters occurs only on the outer third, but are transported southward by oceanic circulation beyond the shelf. The puerulus moults from the last phyllosoma stage beyond the shelf and completes the larval cycle by swimming across the shelf and settling in the shallow reef areas.  相似文献

The fate of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon [3H]benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) was examined in two species of scleractinian corals, Favia fragum (Esper) and Montastrea annularis (Ellis and Solander), which were collected in the patch reefs surrounding Alina's Reef (25°23.25N; 80°09.8W) in Biscayne National Park, Florida, USA, in July, 1990. Corals were exposed to initial concentrations of 5 g/l in a simple static system for 25 h. BaP uptake was estimated from the disappearance of BaP from the water. Uptake rates were 6.5±0.7 and 10.8±0.2 g BaP cm-2h-1 for F. fragum and M. annularis, respectively, at initial BaP concentrations and were directly proportional to the concentration of BaP in the water. The separation of zooxanthellae from coral tissue revealed that zooxanthellae can accumulate up to 53 and 64% of the total BaP-derived radioactivity present in F. fragum and M. annularis, respectively. Both corals metabolized BaP slowly, as most of the accumulated radioactivity was present as the unmetabolized chemical. However, aqueous and organic-soluble metabolites were found in both the animal and zooxanthellae fractions. Analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) revealed that both species of corals metabolized BaP to various tetrols, triols, dihydrodiols, quinones and phenols, although the pattern of metabolites differed between species. Zooxanthellae contained some of the same Phase I metabolites found in the animal tissue; however, tetrols and triols were absent in extracts from the zooxanthellae. The elimination of BAP from corals was also slow; approximately 38 and 65% of the accumulated radioactivity was still present in F. fragum and M. annularis, respectively, 144 h following the transfer of exposed corals to an uncontaminated flow-through seawater system.  相似文献

By applying a microinjection technique previously used in cell biology, a pH-sensitive dye, 2,7-bis(2-carboxyethyl)-5,6-carboxyfluorescein) (BCECF), was injected into the gut of the copepod Calanus helgolandicus to determine pH under a range of feeding conditions. The median gut pH of the fore- and hindguts of starved individuals was 6.86 and 7.19, respectively. This was a consistently lower pH than that observed in copepods feeding on either the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii, the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum micans, or the coccolithophorid Emiliania huxleyi (Strain 92D), all of which had a median gut pH>7.0. In all treatments, the median pH of the foregut was more acidic than the median of the hindgut, implying that the foregut is the site of acid secretion. The results, which demonstrate pH values down to 6.11, are discussed in terms of coccolith dissolution, pigment degradation and digestive enzyme activity.  相似文献

Light-based archival tags are increasingly being used on free-ranging marine vertebrates to study their movements using geolocation estimates. These methods use algorithms that incorporate threshold light techniques to determine longitude and latitude. More recently, researchers have begun using sea surface temperature (SST) to determine latitude in temperate regions. The accuracy and application of these algorithms have not been validated on free-ranging birds. Errors in both geolocation methods were quantified by double-tagging Laysan (Phoebastria immutabilis Rothschild) and black-footed (P. nigripes Audubon) albatrosses with both leg-mounted archival tags that measured SST and ambient light, and satellite transmitters. Laysan albatrosses were captured and released from breeding colonies on Tern Island, northwestern Hawaiian Islands (23°52N, 166°17W) and Guadalupe Island, Mexico (28°31N, 118°10W) and black-footed albatrosses from Tern Island. Studies were carried out between December 2002 and March 2003. For all birds combined, the mean ± SD great circle (GC) distance between light-based locations and satellite-derived locations was 400±298 km (n=131). Errors in geolocation positions were reduced to 202±171 km (n=154) when light-based longitude and SST-based latitude (i.e. SST/light) were used to establish locations. The SST/light method produced comparable results for two Laysan albatross populations that traveled within distinctly different oceanic regions (open ocean vs more coastal) whereas light-based methods produced greater errors in the coastal population. Archival tags deployed on black-footed albatrosses returned a significantly higher proportion of lower-quality locations, which was attributed to interference of the light sensor on the tag. Overall, the results demonstrate that combining measures of light-based longitude and SST-based latitude significantly reduces the error in location estimates for albatrosses and can provide valid latitude estimates during the equinoxes, when light-based latitude measurements are indeterminate.Communicated by J.P.
