Hand-collection of specimens by SCUBA diving in the Florida Current revealed that the planktonic foraminiferan Hastigerina pelagica harbors on its surfaces 3 species of planktonic dinoflagellates: Pyrocystis fusiformis, P. noctiluca and, predominanty, Dissodinium elegans. Undamaged H. pelagica is unique in possessing a gelatinous, bubble-like capsule completely surrounding the test. While attached to the surface of this capsule, the dinoflagellates frequently reproduced asexually, and appeared healthy in all respects. They were not assimilated by the foraminifera. The number of D. elegans per foraminiferan increased with increased surface area of the gelatinous capsule, averaging approximately 6 dinoflagellates/foraminiferan, with a maximum of 79. Surface-space utilization per D. elegans remained constant with increased foraminiferan size. The use of the foraminifera in a facultative commensal or symbiotic association and the value of surfaces in that association is postulated.  相似文献

This study investigated the potential use of chelator-induced bioextraction of heavy metals from soil by Coprinus comatus in a pot experiment. Two production waves of the mushroom were obtained to determine biomass and metal concentration. The application of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) or nitrilotriacetate (NTA) slightly inhibited the growth of C. comatus, but significantly enhanced the accumulation of heavy metals in fruiting bodies compared with the control. The highest concentrations of Pb, Cu and Cd reached 900.60, 783.61 and 23.64 mg·kg?1 in a single pot, respectively. However, application of citric acid (CA) had no effect on metal uptake. Moreover, chelators applied to soil after fructification increased the dry biomass and metal concentration in fruiting bodies compared with those applied before sowing mycelia. EDTA was more efficient for inducing metal uptake by C. comatus than NTA or CA, and split applications of EDTA after fructification resulted in the highest total metal uptake by mushroom, i.e. 19.08±2.84, 17.57±0.69 and 0.55±0.06 mg for Pb, Cu and Cd, respectively, which were 130, 12 and 5 times values obtained with the control. Interestingly, many mushrooms turned blue after soil had been treated with chelator, indicating that these mushrooms are rich in Cu.  相似文献

To examine bioconcentration factors (BCFs) of mercury by Parasol Mushroom (Macrolepiota procera) roughly similarly sized (a cap diameter) fruiting bodies of this fungus and underlying soil (0–10 cm) samples were collected at 15 sites in Poland between 1995 and 2003. The total mercury content of the individual caps and stipes of Parasol Mushroom ranged from 0.05 to 22 mg Hg/kg dry matter (d.m.) and from 0.05 to 20 mg Hg/kg d.m., while the means were from 1.1 to 8.4 mg Hg/kg d.m. and from 0.83 to 6.8 mg Hg/kg d.m., respectively. The caps generally contained higher concentrations of mercury when compared to stipes, and the means of the cap to stipe mercury concentration quotient ranged from 1.3 to 4.6. The range of mercury concentration in topsoil samples collected at the sites where the fruiting bodies were collected was from 0.01 to 0.54 mg/g d.m. (means ranged from 0.022 to 0.36 mg/g d.m.). The BCFs factors for total mercury varied from 0.52 to 470 for individual caps and 0.52 to 360 for stipes, while average values, depending on the site, were from 16 to 220 and from 7.6 to 130 for caps and stipes, respectively.  相似文献

We present the first study of the effects of ocean acidification on settlement of benthic invertebrates and microfauna. Artificial collectors were placed for 1 month along pH gradients at CO2 vents off Ischia (Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy). Seventy-nine taxa were identified from six main taxonomic groups (foraminiferans, nematodes, polychaetes, molluscs, crustaceans and chaetognaths). Calcareous foraminiferans, serpulid polychaetes, gastropods and bivalves showed highly significant reductions in recruitment to the collectors as pCO2 rose from normal (336–341 ppm, pH 8.09–8.15) to high levels (886–5,148 ppm) causing acidified conditions near the vents (pH 7.08–7.79). Only the syllid polychaete Syllis prolifera had higher abundances at the most acidified station, although a wide range of polychaetes and small crustaceans was able to settle and survive under these conditions. A few taxa (Amphiglena mediterranea, Leptochelia dubia, Caprella acanthifera) were particularly abundant at stations acidified by intermediate amounts of CO2 (pH 7.41–7.99). These results show that increased levels of CO2 can profoundly affect the settlement of a wide range of benthic organisms.  相似文献

Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni and Zn contents were quantified for three wild-growing edible species of macrofungi (Boletus edulis, Macrolepiota procera and Cantharellus cibarius) and underlying soil samples collected at forest sites in Lubuskie voivodeship, Poland. The total concentration of the analysed elements was determined using an ASA iCE 3000 series atomic absorption spectrometer. The analysis found significant differences in bioaccumulation between species and differing distributions of trace elements in the caps and stalks of fruiting bodies. Bioaccumulation factors revealed that Zn and Cu are the most bioaccumulated elements, whereas Cr and Mn are excluded from bioaccumulation. Macrolepiota procera showed the highest bioaccumulation of Cu, and Zn is accumulated to the greatest extent by Boletus edulis. A few significant differences (p≤0.05) between the examined species were observed.  相似文献

Flat lizards (Platysaurus broadleyi) at Augrabies Falls National Park, South Africa, are restricted to rocky terrain where the predominant tree is the Namaqua fig (Ficus cordata cordata). P. broadleyi readily feeds on Namaqua figs when they are available, and the lizards sometimes form large (maximum recorded=134) congregations under fruiting fig trees. The distance lizards travel to fruiting trees also exceed normal daily foraging distances. Location of fruiting fig trees by a lizard can have a high pay-off because figs are energetically rich and trees fruit irregularly and asynchronously, resulting in a resource that is available, but unpredictable in time and space. The prediction that bird activity in fig trees provides a cue to the presence of ripe figs was tested experimentally. By placing cages containing birds and empty control cages in trees devoid of fruit, we demonstrated that P. broadleyi are drawn to fig trees with high bird congregations. We also tested if the presence of a fig tree was necessary to draw lizards to bird congregations by placing cages containing birds and empty control cages in a matched-pairs design on rock away from trees. Namaqua fig trees were not necessary to draw lizards to bird congregations. Received: 12 May 1998 / Accepted after revision: 30 November 1998  相似文献

The natural diet of Callinectes ornatus in Ubatuba Bay, Ubatuba (SP), Brazil, was studied. Influence of season, sex, size and molt stage variation in the diet were also described. Specimens were collected monthly over a period of 1 year, in Ubatuba Bay, using a fishing boat equipped with a double rigged net. The relative degree of stomach fullness, frequency of occurrence, and quantitative scoring (percentage) were determined. Digested material, crustaceans, sediment and mollusks were the principal items of the diet. Echinoderms, annelids, plants, and fishes were also notable prey items, and other food categories (foraminiferans, cnidarians, worms and bryozoans) occurred in low percentages. A non-significant difference was found in many items during seasonal analysis, i.e. plants, foraminiferans, cnidarians, bryozoans and digested material were present at highest percentages during summer and autumn, while crustaceans and echinoderms were consumed in larger amounts during the spring and winter. Males and females consumed a similar diet, although ovigerous females showed a greater tendency to feed on items with soft tissues (fish, squid, shrimp). Juveniles fed more on sedentary and calcareous items than did adults, showing a significant tendency to reduce consumption of foraminiferans, annelids, bryozoans, echinoderms and sediment as the animal increased in size, accompanied by an elevation in the consumption of plants, crustaceans and fish. These crabs are opportunistic predators with a preference for crustaceans and mollusks that is correlated with the availability of prey and the ontogenetic phase of the predator. The Alcyonacean octocoral Alcyonium siderium Verrill and the sea anemone Metridium senile (L.), the only common perennial zooplanktivores on shallow (16-m depth) subtidal rock walls in much of northern New England, USA, are of similar heights and overlap in their habitat and microhabit distributions. The coelenteron contents of both species were sampled at four-hour intervals over a diel cycle and were compared to zooplankton available in the water at 1 to 5 cm from the rock wall, the height at which the cnidarians held their feeding tentacles. Prey in coelenterons of A. siderium were significantly smaller (means of 256 to 345 m), and those in coelenterons of M. senile were equal to or slightly greater in length (means of 415 to 1006 m) than the available zooplankton. The diets of A. siderium and M. senile differed significantly from each other and from the available zooplankton. A. siderium showed strong positive electivites for ascidian larvae and for foraminiferans, and strongly negative electivities for most crustaceans. M. senile had strong positive electivities for barnacle cyprids, ascidian larvae, and gammarid amphipods, and strong negative electivities for invertebrate eggs, foraminiferans, calanoid and harpacticoid copepods, and ostracods. Electivities may reflect tentacle avoidance or escape by motile prey as well as predator preference. Substratum-associated organisms (e.g. demersal crustaceans, larvae of benthic invertebrates) were the most common items in the diets of both species, suggesting a tight benthic food web, similar to the situation for coral reef anthrozoans which rely on reef-generated zooplankton. A. siderium ate large numbers of ascidian larvae which, as benthic adults, compete for space with A. siderium and can overgrow small colonies. Predation on the larvae of a competing species may alleviate competition by decreasing the competitor's recruitment.  相似文献

In the Sargassum region on the coast of Mukaishima, in the Inland Sea of Japan, the phytal animals living on Sargassum serratifolium, and the alga itself as a habitat for phytal animals, were studied from August, 1966 to August, 1968. The standing crop of Sargassum/m2 bottom was 4.93 kg/m2 (March, 1967) and 3.53 kg/m2 (February, 1968) in the most luxuriant season, and 0.4 to 0.5 kg/m2 (July, 1967 and 1968) in the off-season. The individual number of phytal animals per mean plant, without sessile fauna, reached a maximum in late winter and early spring (about 130,000 in 1967, 266,000 in 1968) when Sargassum was luxuriant, and a minimum in summer (about 15,000 in both years) when Sargassum was declining. Among the phytal animals, benthonic copepods (Harpacticoida) were very abundant in most seasons. Their dominance decreased in spring, whilst nematode dominance increased. It appears that such seasonal changes are closely related to the standing crop of S. serratifolium. Fluctuations in numbers of most groups of the meiofauna of phytal animals, such as foraminiferans, ostracods, isopods, amphipods, copepods, tanaids and nematodes, are connected with changes in the standing Sargassum crop. Seasonal fluctuations of some groups, such as echinoderms, actinians, mysids and decapod crustaceans (macrofauna), were, however, independent of Sargassum crop variations. The individual number of phytal animals/m2 bottom in the Sargassum region were compared with findings of previous studies in other habitats, such as naked sandy and mud bottoms.Contribution No. 100 from the Mukaishima Marine Biological Station.  相似文献

Fungi inhabiting Sargassum spp. from the Sargasso Sea were examined. Three ascomycetes were found, two of which are new records for this environment. Haloguignardia oceanica (Ferdinandsen et Winge) Kohlm. comb. nov. was collected only once before, over 50 years ago. Haloguignardia tumefaciens (Cribb et Herbert) Cribb et Cribb was known only from Australia and New Zealand. Imperfect states of these ascomycetes and fruiting bodies (acervuli) of a hyperparasitic deuteromycete (cf. Sphaceloma sp.) were found for the first time in the galls of the two species. Lindra thalassiae Orpurt et al., previously known only from the sea grass Thalassia testudinum Köngig, develops in air bladders of Sargassum sp., causing a shedding of infested vesicles. Possible reasons for the rarity of fungal species and diseased plants in the Sargasso Sea are diseussed.Dedicated respectfully to my teacher, Professor Dr. H Drawert (Universität Famburg), on the occasion of his 60th birthday.  相似文献

Ultramafic and volcanic soils are exploited for industrial activities such as mining due to their high metal content, thus it is important that species in these areas are documented before irreversible environmental damage sets in. In this study, aerial and ground leaf litter, dead vines and twigs from six forest patches on volcanic and ultramafic soils in the provinces of Bataan, Pangasinan and Zambales in the Philippines were cultured in moist chambers (MC) and assessed for myxomycete diversity. From the 77% positive MC for myxomycetes, a total of 40 species from 14 genera were identified. Despite the higher heavy metal content, forest patches on ultramafic soils had greater species diversity as compared to volcanic soils. In this study, 10 species were abundant in both forest patches, namely Arcyria cinerea, Diachea leucopodia, Diderma effusum, D. hemisphaericum, Didymium ochroideum, Perichaena chrysosperma, P. corticalis, P. depressa, P. dictyonema and Physarum melleum. Selected myxomycetes tested for Cr and Mn content had equal or higher heavy metal levels than that of their leaf substrate. The study hypothesised that the presence of Mn7+ in fruiting bodies of myxomycetes was due to the phagocytosis of food bacteria inhabiting the substrates on the forest soil laden with heavy metal.  相似文献

The Dictyostelid or cellular slime moulds (CSMs) are soil amoebae with an asexual life cycle involving social behaviour and division of labour. The most obvious distinction is between ‘germ line’ or pre-spore cells, which survive, and ‘somatic’ or pre-stalk cells, which eventually die. A plausible hypothesis to explain the apparent altruism of pre-stalk cells is that it is directed at clonal relatives. We have tested this hypothesis by comparing indices of altruistic behaviour between clonal and chimeric (genetically heterogeneous) social groups. The groups were generated by mixing amoebae belonging to distinguishable strains of Dictyostelium giganteum. The amoebae of one strain do not aggregate at all when mixed with any of three other strains and aggregate poorly with a fourth. Among the latter, co-aggregation occurs but is followed by varying extents of sorting out. At times, two strains form separate fruiting bodies; in other cases, they remain together but are clustered in clonal groups within a single chimeric structure. Our expectation was that the allocation of cells to the stalk pathway would be higher, and to the spore pathway lower, in clonal social groups than in chimeras. The expectation was not always fulfilled. In addition, three strains could be arrayed in a linear rank order in terms of the relative efficiencies of spore-formation in binary mixtures; but when all three were mixed, they were equally efficient. More than overall genetic similarity, cell fate in a chimera seems to result from complex non-linear interactions based on epigenetic differences.  相似文献

Since 1994 data on fungal fruiting have been gathered in the Dawyck Botanic Garden outside Edinburgh, including that for eight plots within a 7.5 ha wood, which has been left unmanaged in order to investigate relationships amongst fungal succession, habitat characteristics and local weather patterns. The climatic data are provided by a small meteorological station situated on site. To handle nearly 4000 entries of data so far collected a computer database was constructed. This assists querying of the information so that changes in fungal communities and patterns of succession can be observed, and the relevant data extracted for further analysis. To aid in this analysis, and to give the user full control over editing, updating and querying the database, a special computer program was compiled.Analysis of the database records revealed that the currently known Dawyck fungal community comprises over 620 different taxa, and the species list increases every year. Although some species of mycorrhizal fungi showed high specificity towards their preferred host either at species (e.g. Lactarius blennius with beech, Lactarius quietus with oak, Russula fellea and Russula mairei with beech), or at genus level (e.g. Suillus spp. with Pinaceae), some other common fungi (e.g. of the genus Amanita) were found to have very wide host ranges. In addition, unusual mycorrhizal associations have also been recorded. A lime tree (Tilia), which is supposedly primarily endomycorrhizal, has been found regularly associated with Russula cyanoxantha, Russula parazurea, Russula pectinata and Inocybe fastigiata. Many common Scottish fungi were found to be associated with introduced exotic trees, which is illustrated on the example of Pseudotsuga menziesii (Douglas Fir). The software created utilises the Microsoft Office suite of programs. Microsoft Access was used to construct the database, and Microsoft Excel was used for statistical investigations. The software was programmed using Microsoft Visual Basic, and provided a means of extracting the necessary data stored in Access and controlling the formulae used in Excel for their analysis. The recorded seasonal patterns of fungal fruiting was successfully described by a simulation mathematical model comprising differential and algebraic equations. This model may now be used as a submodel within more complex models describing terrestrial ecosystem processes. Examples of model simulations and sensitivity analysis are given and implications for future research discussed.  相似文献

Representative samples from the epiphytic and psammolittoral communities were made during the summer of 1968 in North Sea Harbor, Southampton, Long Island, USA. In the epiphytic communities, the foraminifera were very patchy; 2.6% of the total samples accounted for 56.4% of the total foraminifera collected. The standing crop and species composition of the foraminifera changed throughout the summer. Two seasonal peaks were observed in the epiphytes. In early summer Protelphidium tisburyensis was the dominant form. In late July and August Elphidium incertum was dominant. Taken as a whole over the entire summer, the following species comprised the epiphytic foraminiferan community: Elphidium incertum (46.63%); Protelphidium tisburyensis (25.64%); Ammotium salsum (9.88%); Elphidium clavatum (6.74%); E. translucens (3.47%); Ammonia beccarii (2.83%); Ammobaculites dilatatus (2.08%); Trochammina inflata (1.8%); Elphidium advenum (< 1%); E. galvestonense (< 1%); E. gunteri (< 1%); Quinqueloculina lata (< 1%); Q. seminulum (< 1%) and Trochammina macrescens (< 1%). Although fewer species were found, many more foraminifera live in the benthos than in the epiphytic community. Taken as a whole, over the entire summer, the following species comprised the foraminifera in the psammolittoral community: Trochammina inflata (49.6%); Elphidium incertum (31.8%); Ammotium salsum (10.9%); Quinqueloculina seminulum (4.2%); Elphidium sp. (1.5); Protelphidium tisburyensis (0.9%); Ammonia beccarii (0.7%); Elphidium clavatum (< 0.1%); and E. translucens (< 0.1%). Three species, Ammotium salsum, Elphidium incertum and Trochammina inflata bloomed successively in the psammolittoral community. The distribution of the latter two species was correlated with the vertical and horizontal changes of grain size; Elphidium incertum distribution clustered around a median grain size of 0.1 mm, whereas Trochammina inflata clustered around a median grain size of 0.46 mm. The sediments were sampled both at high and low tide. No evidence was obtained to suggest migration of foraminifera through the sediments as a function of tidal cycle. Horizontal distribution of the foraminifera in the marsh was correlated with the flow patterns of very small rivulets in the study area. With respect to many species of foraminifera, the overlying epiphytic communities are not continuous with the psammolittoral communities below them in the water column. Protelphidium tisburyensis was an early summer dominant epiphyte, but was rare in the psammolittoral communities. Trochammina inflata, on the other hand, was dominant in the coarser, deeper sediments and was rare in the epiphytic community. Elphidium incertum is presumably a generalist species. It formed half the foraminiferan population throughout the water column. Ammotium salsum was also abundant in both communities.Supported by US AEC Contract AT (30-1) 3995. Ref. Phaeodarian radiolarians were sampled from the upper 200 m along a transect through the ice-edge zone in the Weddell Sea in the austral autumn (March 1986) and at several stations in the western Antarctic Peninsula region in the austral winter (June 1987). Abundances of phaeodarians reached 3 132 m-3 and were similar to or higher than maximum abundances of polycystine radiolarians, foraminiferans, and acantharians, and similar to or less than those of the heliozoan Sticholonche sp. Phaeodarians varied in abundance and species composition both seasonally and/or geographically. In contrast to the more numerous ciliates and flagellates that were most abundant in the upper 100 m, phaeodarians were most abundant from 100 to 200 m and showed no distinct pattern related to the ice edge. Electron microscopical examination of food vacuoles showed that phaeodarians are omnivorous generalists, feeding on a variety of food ranging in size from bacteria to large protozoans in both regions and seasons. Algal cells consumed in addition to diatoms and dinoflagellates included Chlorella-like cells and members of the recently described chrysophyte order Parmales. Scales of prasinophytes were common. Phaeodarians are consumed by the non-selective particlefeeding salp Salpa thompsoni. Thus, phaeodarians link microbial food webs to macrozooplankton and increase the complexity of the Antarctic food web.  相似文献

The present study investigated the growth, mortality, recruitment and food habits ofMonacanthus tomentosus. A total of 1038 specimens were collected by beach seine from the seagrass beds of Kotania Bay (Moluccas, Indonesia) from March 1988 to January 1989. Their length-weight relationship wasW=0.011L 3.242. Based on the von Bertalanffy formula, the asymptotic length,L , and growth coefficient,K, were determined as 11.79 cm and 0.86, respectively. Total mortality,Z, was low (2.033). Mean length of minimum capturable size (L c ) was 6.21 cm, and recruitment occurred throughout the year. Food consisted principally of gastropods (21.41%), seagrasses (14.11%), sponges (12.11%), algae (10.82%), amphipods (9.76%) and sedentary polychaetes (9.29%). Pelecypods, opisthobranchs, isopods, copepods, ostracods, foraminiferans, bryozoans, ascidians, nematodes, mollusc eggs and fish eggs were found only in small percentages.  相似文献

Linuparus trigonus (Palinuridae) was collected from northeast Australia at depths of 220 to 300 m in the austral summer of 1985–1986 and its diet was analysed for diel feeding-periodicity and composition. The sex and size of the lobsters and the depth at which they were caught were recorded. About 35% of the foreguts were less than 10% full. L. trigonus appears to be a predator of slow-moving or nearsessile benthic invertebrates; its diet is mainly bivalves, gastropods, ophiuroids, crustaceans, polychaetes, and foraminiferans. Most dietary items differed significantly between the size classes of lobster. The frequency of crustacean remains increased with depth and more gastropods were consumed by lobsters caught at 260 m than at other depths. No significant periodicity in feeding was found for L. trigonus. The foreguts of three Metanephrops spp. (Nephropidae) collected from north-west Australia in August 1983 (M. andamanicus) and January/February 1984 (M. australiensis and M. boschmai) were nearly empty, and nearly half were less than 10% full. Fish, crustaceans and squids were the most common food items eaten. The main food items varied between the species: M. andamanicus ate nearly equal amounts of fish and crustaceans; M. australiensis ate chiefly crustaceans; M. boschmai mainly ate fish and seldom fed on squid. Metanephrops spp. appear to feed by attacking mobile animals and tearing off appendages or by scavenging.

Larval defensive behaviour and eversible organ morphology were compared in the firefly species Luciola cruciata Motschulsky 1854, L. lateralis Motschulsky 1860, L. leii Fu et Ballantyne 2006, Lampyris noctiluca Linnaeus 1767, Pyrocoelia analis Fabricius 1801, P. pectoralis Oliver 1883, P. sp. and two Diaphanes species. In all cases the eversible organs are located on the pleural cuticle, dorsal to the spiracle, but there is considerable variation between species in their number, size and shape. In La. noctiluca they are confined to the abdomen, whereas in the other species they also occur on the meta- and mesothorax. In La. noctiluca and the Pyrocoelia species the organs are columnar in shape, contrasting with the forked organs of the Luciola and Diaphanes species. The eversible organs of the Luciola species, which are all aquatic, are remarkably larger (relative to body length) than those of the other, terrestrial species. On organ eversion the Luciola species emit an odour resembling pine oil, the Diaphanes species smell weakly of mint and L. noctiluca and the Pyrocoelia species produce no discernible scent, though ants are nonetheless repelled by contact with everted L. noctiluca organs. The organs of all the species studied support protuberances on their external surface, though these too vary in shape, size and ornamentation between species. In all species except L. noctiluca each protuberance is connected to a well-developed globular body via a long, thick stalk. Circular foveae are located in the centres of these globular bodies. The globular bodies consist of secretory cells characterized by the presence of numerous mitochondria and an extensive system of cisternae and tubular endoplasmic reticulum. Behavioural tests revealed that small larvae run away instead of becoming immobile and glowing, whereas large larvae start to glow when disturbed. The study shows that the eversible larval organs form an important part of a defensive arsenal in the Lampyridae.  相似文献

Demersal zooplankton, those plankton which hide within reef sediments during the day but emerge to swim freely over the reef at night, were sampled quantitatively using emergence traps planced over the substrate at Lizard Island Lagoon, Great Barrier Reef. Densities of zooplankton emerging at night from 6 substrate types (fine, medium, and coarse sand, rubble, living coral and reef rock) and from 5 reef zones (seaward face, reef flat, lagoon, back reef, and sand flat) were determined. A large population of nocturnal plankton including cumaceans, mysids, ostracods, shrimp, isopods, amphipods, crustacean larvae, polychaetes, foraminiferans and copepods are resident members of the reef community at Lizard Island. The mean density of plankton emerging throughout the reef was 2510±388 (standard error) zooplankton/m2 of substrate. Biomass averaged 66.2±5.4 mg ash-free dry weight/m2 of substrate. Demersal zooplankton exhibited significant preferences for substrate types and reef zones. The highest mean density of zooplankton emerged from coral (11,264±1952 zooplankton/m2) while the lowest emerged from reef rock (840±106 zooplankton/m2). The density of demersal plankton was six times greater on the face than in any other zone, averaging 7900±1501 zooplankton/m2. Copepods dominated samples collected over living coral and rubble while foraminiferans, ostracods and decapod larvae were most abundant from sand. Plankton collected with nets at night correlated only qualitatively with plankton collected in emergence traps from the same location. Although abundant, demersal plankton were not numerous enough to meet the metabolic needs of all corals at Lizard Island Lagoon. Demersal plankton appear especially adapted to avoid fish predation. The predator-avoidance strategies of demersal plankton and maintenance of position on the reef are discussed. Our results indicate that much of the zooplankton over coral reefs actually lives on the reef itself and that previous studies using standard net sampling techniques have greatly underestimated plankton abundance over coral reefs.  相似文献
