Net primary productivity and organic matter flow of a mangrove-dominated wetland was estimated by following production and detritus dynamics in a tidal pond in north west Hong Kong in 1986–1988 (9.1 ha). Total productivity was 12.47 t dry wt ha–1 yr–1, of which >90% was from emergent macrophytes (the mangroveKandelia candel and the reedPhragmites communis). High turbidity and high summer temperatures probably limited respective production by phytoplankton and benthic macroalgae (dominated byEnteromorpha crinata). Despite the high total productivity, little detritus was exported from the emergent macrophyte stands, due to the low inundation frequency. This created a net water column carbon deficit which was provided for by the high organic matter import (mean = 4.42 g ash free dry wt m–2 d–1) from the incoming water. This same sediment and particulate organic carbon input giving a high accretion rate of 1.7 cm yr–1 was probably also the force behind progressive dis-coupling of emergent macrophyte production from water column consumers. This resulted in a tendency to retain production in the emergent macrophyte stands while the water column community increasingly relied on allochthonous carbon. This shift from a net exporter to a net importer of carbon in landward wetlands is probably characteristic of the transition into nutrient-conservative terrestrial systems.  相似文献

The intensive reconstructive sampling (1957–2004, 39 localities), a systematic direct observation (1992–2004, 1 locality) and particular direct observations (66 localities) of Posidonia oceanica meadows were analysed together with temporal series of flowering available in the literature (19 localities). This allowed the examination of temporal and spatial variability in annual flowering prevalence (FP, the fraction of meadows flowering in a given year) and of annual meadow flowering intensity (FI, number of inflorescences per shoot) for the period 1979–2004 across the Western Mediterranean, as well as spatial variability of flowering frequency (FF, the fraction of years that a given meadow has flowered) and shoot flowering probability (Pf, fraction of flowering stalks appeared per annual segment). Each year, on an average 17% of the investigated meadows flowered, ranging from 3 to 86% of meadows among the years. The highest annual FP and FI values were obtained in 2003 (FP=0.86 and mean FI=0.23±0.03 inflorescences shoot−1). A secondary peak of FP and mean FI occurred 9 years earlier, in 1994 (FP=0.44 and mean FI=0.08±0.02). Both peaks of flowering occurred after hot summers. Flowering synchrony in particular years across the Western Mediterranean and clines of increased meadow flowering frequency towards the North and East, suggests the existence of large-scale environmental mechanisms controlling the floral induction. On the other hand, meadow FF and Pf were highly heterogeneous among and within the meadows, indicating that local factors also may play a significant role in flowering induction. When flowering, the Western Mediterranean meadows showed an average 0.11±0.02 inflorescences shoot−1, but FI greatly varied among and along the series (from 0.002 to 0.54 inflorescences shoot−1) and decreased significantly with depth but was independent of meadow shoot density and meadow latitude or longitude. The shoot flowering probability was quite low (0.007±0.002 inflorescences shoot−1 year−1) and exponentially increased with shoot age.  相似文献

This study forms part of the Action Plan for the Conservation of Marine Vegetation in the Mediterranean SEa (United Nation Environmental Program). It was carried out in June 2000 in the Farwà Lagoon, Libya. The mapping of the main benthic vegetation was achieved by compiling the field observations (transect method), and remote sensing of SPOT satellite images. The phytobenthos in the Farwà lagoon covers an area of 1820 ha (65%). Three benthic macrophyte species dominate, namely the marine phanerogamsCymodocea nodosa andPosidonia oceanica, and the algaCaulerpa prolifera. DeadPosidonia oceanica leaves (litter) form veritable mounds in the vicinity of the openings leading to open sea. These leaves, which come from the coastal sea, are brought into the lagoon by currents and tides; their decomposition will lead to high oxygen consumption and the release of hydrogen sulphide. The phenological data ofPosidonia oceanica shoots sampled in the lagoon are similar to those from other stations in the Mediterranean. Conversely, the lepidochronological parameters of shoots sampled in the central part of the lagoon exhibit values that are substantially higher than those generally recorded in the Mediterranean. The mean number of leaves produced annually is 9.9 (mean value for the Mediterranean: 7.5) and the rhizome growth rate is of 35.7 mm.yr−1 (mean value for the Mediterranean: 7.5 mm.yr−1). This hypersaline environment would seem to provide optimum growth conditions for the speciesPosidonia oceanica.  相似文献

The daily abundance of aloricate ciliates at Lime Cay, Jamaica, a shallow neritic site, ranged from 29 to 118 × 106 m–2 (0.97 to 3.93 × 106 m–3) between November 1985 and November 1986. Biomass was converted to kilojoules (1 kcal=4.1855 kJ) assuming 42% carbon, 20.15 kJ (g dry wt)–1, and 20% cell shrinkage. Biomass ranged from 0.40 to 3.00 kJ m–2 (13.3 to 100 J m–3; 0.28 to 2.08µg C l–1) with an annual mean of 1.11 kJ m–2 (36.8 J m–3; 0.764µg C l–1). Nanociliates (<20µm equivalent spherical diameter, ESD) dominated abundance, but microciliates (> 20µm ESD) dominated biomass.Strombidium, Strobilidium, Tontonia andLaboea species were conspicuous taxa. Annual production estimates of the aloricate assemblage, based on literature growth rates, ranged from 404 kJ m–2 yr–1 (37 J m–3 d–1) to 1614 kJ m–2 yr–1 (147 J m–3 d–1). A compromise estimate of 689 kJ m–2 yr–1 (i.e., 63 J m–3 d–1) is comparable to other estimates from tropical and subtropical regions. A model of annual energy flow through 11 planktonic compartments suggests the total ciliate assemblage (aloricates and tintinnines) to be as productive as metazoan herbivores and metazoan carnivores.  相似文献

Weekly samples were collected near Kingston, Jamaica in 27 m vertical hauls, using 200 and 64µm mesh plankton nets, from July 1985 to January 1987. Thirtytwo copepod species were identified; nauplii and all copepodite stages were enumerated. Total copepod abundance ranged from 2.56 to 87.3 × 104 m–2. The annual abundance cycle was bimodal with peaks in October–November and May–June corresponding to the rainy seasons. Mean annual copepodite biomass was 0.15 g AFDW m–2 ranging from 0.03 to 0.41 g AFDW m–2. Mean generation time (from egg to adult) at 28°C was 19.5 d for the common speciesCentropages velificatus, Paracalanus aculeatus, andTemora turbinata. Isochronal development was demonstrated for copepodites ofP. aculeatus andT. turbinata, but not forC. velificatus. Mean daily specific growth rates (G) were 0.63, 0.63, and 0.48 d–1 forC. velificatus, P. aculeatus, andT. turbinata, respectively. In general, daily specific growth rates decreased in the later copepodite stages. Thus, it is postulated that growth of later stages and egg production may be food limited. Annual copepodite production was estimated as 419 kJ m–2 yr–1, while annual exuvial production and naupliar production were 35 and 50 kJ m–2 yr–1, respectively. Egg production was estimated as 44% (184 kJ m–2 yr–1) of the total copepodite production. Thus, mean total annual copepod production was 688 kJ m–2 yr–1. This estimate is within the range of copepod production estimates in coastal temperate regions.  相似文献

Feeding responses of the tentaculate depositfeeding polychaeteEupolymnia nebulosa (Montagu) were studied by measuring rates of uptake of three different14C-labelled diatoms (unialgal cultures ofNavicula incerta Grunow,Nitzschia acicularis Wm Smith, andNitzschia sp.). Worms used during this study were collected in the harbor of Port-Vendre (Western Mediterranean) during August 1986 (immature worms) and December 1987 (mature worms). Uptake rates were affected both by the length of the experiments and by the nature of the food offered. The highest rate of uptake (2.98 10–4 mg ashfree dry wt of algae mg–1 dry wt of worms h–1) was obtained during short-term experiments (4 h) with the smallest diatom (Nitzschia sp.). The lowest rate of uptake (0.21 10–4 mg ash-free dry wt of algae mg–1 dry wt of worms h–1) was also obtained withNitzschia sp., but for a long-term (48 h) experiment. There was no significant difference between rates of uptake of immature and mature worms.  相似文献

Rates of organic uptakes of three live diatoms (Nitzschia acicularis, Nitzschia sp. andNavicula incerta), and of three corresponding filtrates by the deposit-feeding polychaeteEupolymnia nebulosa (Montagu) were measured under similar experimental conditions. Worms used during this study were collected by SCUBA diving at Port-Vendres in shallow water (7 m deep) during the summer of 1986. Uptake rates of live diatoms were affected both by length of the experiments and by the nature of the food offered. The highest rate of uptake (11.8 10–4 mg algal ash-free dry wt mg–1 worm dry wt h–1) was recorded during a short-term experiment (4 h) with the smallest diatom (Nitzschia sp.). The lowest rate (1.1 10–4 mg algal ash-free dry wt mg–1 worm dry wt h–1) was recorded during a long-term experiment (48 h) with the largest diatom (Nitzschia acicularis). Filtrates ofN. acicularis were more readily utilized than those ofNitzschia sp. andNavicula incerta. Because of differences in uptake rates of algal filtrates as a function of species, it is not possible to evaluate the bias due to interaction with dissolved substances in experimental studies assessing ingestion of live benthic diatoms byE. nebulosa.  相似文献

The biochemical and energetic composition of body components of ten species of bathyal echinoids, and an asteroid, a holothuroid and a stalked crinoid were determined from individuals sampled from a variety of deep-water sites near the Bahamas (north Caribbean Sea) in October 1988. When compared with other studies of echinoderms, no geographic- or depth-related differences in biochemical or energetic composition were found. Body-wall tissues were composed primarily of skeletal material (mineral ash), but were comparatively high in organic material in the echinothuriid echinoids, and the asteroid and holothuroid. Gut tissues and pyloric cecae had high levels of lipid and protein, indicating their potential role in nutrient storage. Body-wall tissues were generally low in energy, but were highest in the echinoidsAraeosoma belli (7.7 kJ g–1 dry wt) andSperosoma antillense (8.0 kJ g–1 dry wt), the asteroidOphidiaster alexandri (8.9 kJ g–1 dry wt), and the holothuroidEostichopus regalis (13.1 kJ g–1 dry wt). Energy levels of gut and pyloric cecal tissues were two to three times higher than those of body-wall tissues. Total somatic tissue energy values varied greatly among species, ranging from 1.5 kJ in the echinoidAspidodiadema jacobyi to 142.1 kJ inE. regalis. As the bathyal echinoderms examined in this study occur in great abundance, they represent a significant reservoir of organic and inorganic materials and energy in deep-water benthic systems.  相似文献

The isopod Munnopsurus atlanticus occupies bathyal depths in both the Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic; between 383 and 1022 m) and in the Catalan Sea (Northwestern Mediterranean; between 389 and 1859 m). The species was dominant in both assemblages, reaching bathymetric peaks of abundance on the upper part of the continental slope (400 m depth) in the Bay of Biscay and at ˜600 m in the Catalan Sea. Both the Atlantic and the Mediterranean populations are bivoltines. Demographic analysis of the Bay of Biscay population revealed the production of two generations per year with different potential longevity (5 mo for G1 and 11 mo for G2). The mean cohort-production interval (CPI) was estimated at 8 mo, and results of the demographic analysis were also used to estimate production for the Catalan Sea populations. Mean annual density (D) and biomass (B) were higher in the Bay of Biscay (D = 356.7 individuals 100 m−2; B = 0.803 mg dry wt m−2 yr−1) than in the Mediterranean (D = 16.3 individuals 100 m−2; B = 0.078 mg dry wt m−2 yr−1). Also, mean annual production was an order of magnitude higher in the Atlantic (between 4.063 and 4.812 mg dry wt 100 m−2 yr−1 depending on the method used) than in the Catalan Sea (between 0.346 and 0.519 mg dry wt 100 m−2 yr−1). M. atlanticus feeds on a wide variety of benthic and pelagic food sources. In both study areas, phytodetritus was not important in the diet of M. atlanticus. In contrast, gut-content data suggested an indirect coupling with phytoplankton production in both areas via foraminiferans. The life history and the recorded production are considered in respect to both the dynamics and levels of primary production and the total mass flux in the respective study areas. Differences in the secondary production of both populations seemed to be more consistently explained by differences in total mass flux than by differences in the primary production levels; this is also consistent with the variety of food sources exploited by M. atlanticus. Population dynamics and production of the calanoid copepodParacalanus sp. were studied from November 1986 to November 1987 in Fukuyama Harbor, a eutrophic inlet of the Inland Sea of Japan. This species was perennial, with a large abundance peak in June/July and small peaks in September/October and November/December. During a year of investigation, 15 generations Gould be detected. For each generation, the mean population egg production rate and the mean daily midstage abundance front NIII to CV were determined to obtain a survival curve from egg to CV. The mortality was extremely high during the early life stages: on average only 7.1% of the eggs produced might survive into NIII. This high mortality might be caused by predation by sympatric omnivorous copepods, in addition to sinking loss of eggs from the waten column. The biomass ofParacalanus sp. showed marked seasonal variations largely in parallel with numerical abundance. The instantaneous growth rate of each developmental stage increased exponentially with temperature up to 20 °C, above which the rate was constant. The annual integrated production rate was 734 mg C m–3 yr–1 or 5.5 g C m–2 yr–1.  相似文献

Ammonium excretion of a dense population (~1 500 individuals m–2) of the ophiuridOphiothrix fragilis (Abildgaard) was measured in the Dover Straits (French coast) between May 1989 and March 1990: the excretion rate varied from 4.8 µg N g–1 dry wt h–1 in November to 12.8 µg N g–1 dry wt h–1 in June. Mean individual ammonium excretion,E, wasE=0.019t +1.26 (whereE=µg N individual–1 andt=time in min;r=0.80;N=81). Variations in the ammonium excretion rate during a tidal cycle appeared to arise from variations in the duration of the suspension-feeding activity ofO. fragilis, which was governed by the strength of the tidal current. During short-term starvation, excretion was low (E=0.009t+1.47;r=0.91;N=17), increasing with increasing length of starvation [E=4.62lnt–2.5;r=0.95;N=17], as observed for other echinoderms; this could be due to catabolism of tissue. The daily ammonia flux from thisO. fragilis population to the water column was estimated at 41 mg N m–2 d–1.  相似文献

The standing crop of seaweeds was estimated monthly over a 22 mo period from 1971 to 1973 on a reef at Waikiki, Honolulu, Hawaii. Wet and dry standing crops averaged 1.2 and 0.26 kg m–2, respectively. Approximately 70% of the total biomass was contributed by a single species,Sargassum polyphyllum, and the remainder was contributed by 29 other species. The size of the total standing crop and ofS. polyphyllum in particular was highly correlated with antecedent water temperatures. The highest correlation was with temperatures recorded 3 to 4 wk prior to the estimate of standing crop. Approximately 65% of the variability of the standing crop on the reef was explained by this single variable. Multiple linear-regression analyses did not uncover further significant environmental factors related to theS. polyphyllum standing crop. Temperature may have acted by stimulating the vegetative growth of new plants between the period of minimal abundance in February and maximal abundance in October. The population decline after November relates to the switch to reproductive growth. Total productivity on the reef was estimated to be 16 800 to 19 314 kg dry wt ha–1 yr–1, based on the average size of the standing crop and estimates of removal rate and turnover time, respectively.  相似文献

The photosynthesis–irradiance response of Ecklonia radiata (C. Agardh) J. Agardh, a common kelp in the temperate southern hemisphere, was investigated in situ throughout the year and across a depth profile at West Island, South Australia. Temperature and irradiance environment altered throughout the year, varying at 3 m between 14–20°C and 279–705 mol photons m–2 s–1. Photosynthetic capacity (Pm) varied throughout the year between 177–278 mol O2 g–1 dry wt h–1 at 3 m and 133–348 mol O2 g–1 dry wt h–1 at 10 m. The irradiance required for sub-saturation of photosynthesis (Ek) varied between 97–152 and 81–142 mol photons m–2 s–1 for 3 m and 10 m respectively, and the respiration rate varied between 15–36 and 13–20 mol O2 g–1 dry wt h–1 for 3 m and 10 m. A clear seasonal change in photokinetic parameters was detected and provided strong evidence for a seasonal acclimation response. During winter an increase in the efficiency of light utilisation at low irradiance () was accompanied by a decrease in both Ek and that required for photosynthetic compensation. Pm also increased during the winter and autumn months and respiratory requirements decreased. These changes enable E. radiata to display an optimal photosynthetic performance throughout the year despite significant changes in the surrounding environment.Communicated by P.W. Eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) has access to nutrient pools in both the water column and sediments. We investigated the potential for eelgrass to utilize nitrate nitrogen by measuring nitrate reductase (NR) activity with an in vivo tissue assay. Optimal incubation media contained 60 mM nitrate, 100 mM phosphate, and 0.5% 1-propanol at pH 7.0. Leaves had significantly higher NR activity than roots (350 vs 50 nmoles NO 2 produced g FW–1 h–1). The effects of growing depth (0.8 m MLW, 1.2 m, 3.0 m, 5.0 m) and location within the eelgrass meadow (patch edge vs middle) on NR activity were examined using plants collected from three locations in the Woods Hole area, Massachusetts, USA, in July 1987. Neither depth nor position within the meadow appear to affect NR activity. Nitrate enrichment experiments (200 M NO 3 for 6 d) were conducted in the laboratory to determine if NR activity could be induced. Certain plants from shallow depth (1.2 m) showed a significant response to enrichment, with NR activity increasing from >100 up to 950 nmoles NO 2 g FW–1 h–1 over 6 d. It appears that Z. marina growing in very shallow water (0.8 m) near a shoreline may be affected by ground water or surface run-off enrichments, since plants from this area exhibited rates up to 1 600 nmol NO 2 g FW–1 h–1. Water samples from this location consistently had slightly higher NO 3 concentrations (1.4 M) than all other collection sites (0.7 M). Thus, it is possible that chronic run-off or localized groundwater inputs can create sufficient NO 3 enrichment in the water column to induce nitrate reductase activity in Zostera leaves.  相似文献

Interactions between mercury and selenium accumulation and subcellular binding inAsterias rubens (L.), collected in 1987 from Lille Bælt at Middelfart, Funen, Denmark, were investigated in laboratory experiments. Sea stars exposed to 10µg Hg l–1 for 30 d accumulated mercury in body wall, tube feet and stomach linearly with time at 1.2, 1.2 and 0.5µg Hg g–1 dry wt d–1, respectively. Mercury was accumulated in pyloric caeca and coelomic fluid initially at 1.4µg Hg g–1 dry wt d–1 and 9.4 ng Hg ml–1 d–1, respectively; after 10 d uptake rates decreased. Sea stars exposed to 75µg Se-SeO 3 - - l–1 accumulated selenium linearly with time over 30 d in the stomach, pyloric caeca, tube feet and body wall at 2.0, 1.2, 1.2 and 0.6µg Se g–1 dry wt d–1. Sea stars exposed to 75µg Se-SeO 4 - - l–1 maintained selenium levels in the coelomic fluid at 75µg Se l–1 over 30 d. Exposure to selenate did not alter the selenium concentrations in the tissues. Sea stars exposed concurrently to 75µg Se-SeO 3 - - and 10µg Hg l–1 accumulated more mercury and selenium in tube feet and body wall than did sea stars exposed to the two elements alone. In pyloric caeca and stomach concurrent exposure reduced accumulation of both elements. Mercury was bound predominantly in the insoluble fraction of the tissues, and soluble mercury was bound in proteins of high (> 70 kilodaltons) or very low (< 6000 daltons) molecular weight. Ca. half of the selenium recovered was bound in the insoluble fraction, and soluble selenium was bound in proteins of high (> 70 kilodaltons) or very low (< 6000 daltons) molecular weight. Interaction between the two elements was exerted predominantly in the insoluble fraction of the tissues.  相似文献

Large areas of mangroves in India are heavily disturbed by cattle grazing, hypersalinity, and other human-induced impacts. In two disturbed Avicennia marina forests and two undisturbed A. marina and Rhizophora apiculata forests in the Pichavaram mangroves of the Vellar–Coleroon estuarine complex, southeast India, we measured the rates and pathways of microbial decomposition of soil organic matter to determine if human impact is altering biogeochemical activity within these stands. Rates of total carbon oxidation (TCOX) were higher in the undisturbed A. marina forest (mean 199 mol C m–2 year–1) than in the two impacted stands (43 and 79 mol C m–2 year–1); rates of total carbon oxidation in the R. apiculata forest averaged 75 mol C m–2 year–1. Sulphate reduction (range 21–319 mmol S m–2 day–1) was the major decomposition pathway (65–85% of TCOX), except at the most disturbed forest (30% of TCOX). Rates of sulphate reduction at all sites peaked in sub-surface soils to a depth of about 1 m, leading to little carbon burial (3–5% of total C input). There was some evidence of measurable iron and manganese reduction in association with tree roots. Rates of microbial activity were rapid in comparison with rates measured in other mangrove soils, reflecting high rates of phytoplankton production and organic matter retention in this lagoon. Human-induced disturbance creates a sharp zonation of dry, hypersaline soil overlying less saline, wetter soil, suppressing surface microbial and root growth. We conclude that this vertical alteration of soil characteristics and biogeochemistry shifts the cycling of nutrients between trees and microbes to a disequilibrium state, partly explaining why mangroves are stunted in these declining forests.Communicated by G. This study was designed to assess the contribution of moulting and eggs to production of the euphausiid Nyctiphanes australis G. O. Sars. For this purpose, live specimens were collected from Storm Bay, south-eastern Tasmania, between August and December 1981, while preserved samples, collected between February 1980 and February 1981, were also examined. The intermoult period of N. australis increased exponentially with increase in body length and weight. Larvae moulted approximately every 2.5 to 3 d and adults every 4 to 5 d at 15°C. A decrease in temperature from 15° to 10°C resulted in the intermoult period almost doubling. The mean weight of exuviae produced represented nearly 6% of the body dry weight of the individual. Continuous maturation of ova was observed, with an individual female capable of releasing a total of 1 100 eggs in a lifetime. These are deposited as a series of batches into a pair of external ovisacs every 30 d. The size of the batch of eggs was dependent on the size of the female. Moulting of euphausiids forms a significant contribution of organic matter to detrital food webs. A value of 42.01 mg m-3 yr-1 was obtained for the production of exuviae. Egg production was calculated to be between 1.41 and 4.22 mg m-3 yr-1. Production and mean annual biomass of N. australis was previously calculated as 78.29 mg m-3 yr-1 and 5.39 mg m-3, respectively. Thus, the total production integrated for the whole of Storm Bay was 125 mg m-3 yr-1 or 2 309 tonnes dry wt yr-1, representing an overall P:B ratio of 23.1.  相似文献

The nature of protein catabolism in a wide range of species of midwater zooplankton was investigated. The weight-specific ammonia excretion rates (g NH3–N g–1 dry wt h–1, y) decline exponentially with minimum depth of occurreece (MDO, x), y=163.4 x–0.479±0.212 (95%ci) (CI=confidence interval), when temperature is held constant. The change in ammonia excretion can be partially explained by the decrease in percent protein (%P) with MDO, %P=80.17 MDO–0.148±0.122 (95%ci) The atomic O:N ratio of freshly caught zooplankters ranged from 9.1 to 91, with most measurements between 9 and 25. Detailed studies were carried out on the response of one of the species studied (Gnathophausia ingens) to starvation (28 d). After 14 d of starvation the average ammonia excretion rate declined by more than 75% to less than 1 g NH3–N g–1 wet wt h–1, although the average oxygen consumption declined by only 13% within the first 7 d of starvation and then remained stable. This differential response of oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion to starvation resulted in an increase in the average O:N ratio of starved animals from an initial 33 to 165 after 21 d. The average O:N ratios of fed mysids remained below 38 during the experiment. G. ingens maintains a relatively uniform metabolic rate during starvation by relying more heavily on its large lipid stores than when being fed.  相似文献

The animal-habitat relationships and seasonal dynamics of the benthic macroinfauna were investigated from November 1986 to October 1988 in the Great Sippe-wissett salt marsh (Massachusetts, USA). Total macrofaunal abundance varied seasonally, displaying a peak in late spring and early summer, then declining sharply during late summer and recovering briefly in fall before collapsing in winter. Three macroinfaunal assemblages were found in the marsh, distributed along gradients of environmental factors. These included a sandy non-organic sediment assemblage, a sandy organic sediment assemblage and a muddy sediment assemblage. The species groups characteristic of unstable sandy non-organic sediments included the polychaetes Leitoscoloplos fragilis, Aricidea jefreyssi, Magelona rosea and Streptosyllis verrilli, the oligochaete Paranais litoralis, and the crustacean Acanthohaustorius millsi. Sandy organic sediments were characterized by the polychaetes Marenzelleria viridis, Capitella capitata, Neanthes succinea, N. arenaceodonta, Polydora ligni and Heteromastus filiformis, the oligochaete Lumbricillus sp., and the mollusc Gemma gemma. In muddy sites, the polychaete Streblospio benedicti and the oligochaetes Paranais litoralis and Monopylephorus evertus were the dominant species. Secondary production of benthic macroinfauna in each of these habitats was estimated. The highest values of biomass and production were recorded in the sandy organic sediments. Secondary production was estimated to be 1850 kJ m-2 yr-1 in sandy organic areas, but only 281 kJ m-2 yr-1 in sandy non-organic areas and 113 kJ m-2 yr-1 in muddy areas. This results in an area-weighted average production of 505 kJ m-2 yr-1 for the unvegetated areas of the marsh. The Great Sippewissett salt marsh has an area of 483800 m2, the total secondary production of the macroinfauna for the whole unvegetated area of the marsh was estimated as 4651 kg dry wt yr-1, expressed as somatic growth. This production value seems consistent with production data obtained for other intertidal North Atlantic environments.  相似文献

Growth and size structure in a baltic Mytilus edulis population   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
N. Kautsky 《Marine Biology》1982,68(2):117-133
Since Mytilus edulis L. has very few predators and competitors for space, it has become a biomass dominant in the Baltic proper covering hard substrates from the water surface to more than 30 m depth. In order to investigate the factors controlling size and production in a Baltic M. edulis population, growth was studied by the analysis of annual growth rings, measurements of caged individuals and the analysis of size classes in the population, and on settlement ropes. The total number of mussels in a representative mussel bed at 4 m depth varied between 36 000 and 158 000 ind · m-2 during the year, mainly due to variations in very small mussels (<2 mm), whereas the abundance of mussels 2mm was rather constant between about 17 000 and 28 000 ind · m-2. Maximum numbes of mussels < 2 mm, amounting to 132 000 ind · m-2, were found after settlement in summer, but still half a year later in spring, 65 000 ind · m-2 < 2 mm were registered, due to very strong intraspecific competition for food and space leading to the competitive suppression of small individuals and large variations in growth rates. Due to the special size-structure of the population only the analysis of annual growth rings could be used to estimate natural shell growth. From being very low in the smallest mussels, growth was linear between about 2–10 yr of age, corresponding to about 3–20 mm length, after which it decreased with a L=32 mm. Over the linear interval, growth in the populations from 3–6 m and 10–15m depth was 3.1 and 2.2 mm · yr-1, respectively. Meat growth showed strong annual variations mainly due to gonad production. Starving mussels could, however, while utilizing energy reserves, survive losses of up to 78% of their meat biomass. This ability of M. edulis to respire away its own biomass and its apparent tolerance of weight loss has important implication. It will drastically reduce the energy flow to destruents from mussels dying naturally, which is of special significance in the Baltic, where predators and scavengers are scarce. It enables the mussels to endure bad food conditions and buffer strong seasonal variations in food abundance, maintaining the strongly food-and space-limited Baltic M. edulis population at the carrying capacity of the area.  相似文献
