It is well known that the dissolution of goethite plays an important role in catalyzing the oxidation of organic chemicals. Therefore, this study investigates how surface dissolution of goethite affects 2-chlorophenol oxidation in the goethite/H2O2 process. Experimental results indicate that ligand and reductant can enhance the dissolution rate of goethite, which is surface-controlled. Our results further indicate 2-chlorophenol degradation depends on goethite concentration. In addition, the oxidation rate of 2-CP is correlated with reductive dissolution rate at various dosages of goethite. Moreover, the oxidation mechanism of 2-CP is also a surface-controlled reaction. A mechanism proposed herein indicates that, in addition to the contaminant, its intermediate species affect the oxidation rate as well.

Polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are the leading plastics in total production in the world. The incineration of plastic-based materials forms many chlorinated compounds, such as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). In this study the addition of goethite (alpha-FeOOH) was investigated to determine its suppressing effect on the emission of PCDD/Fs and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) during the combustion of wastes containing PE and PVC. Goethite was being considered since it acts as a dioxin-suppressing catalyst during incineration. Results showed that incorporation of goethite greatly reduced the generation of PCDD/Fs and HCB in the exhaust gas and fly ash. The concentration of PCDD/Fs in flue gas decreased by 45% for lab-scale and 52% for small incinerator combustion experiments, where the goethite ratios in feed samples were 0.54% and 0.34%, respectively. Under the same conditions, the concentration of HCB in flue gas decreased by 88% and 62%, respectively. The present study showed a possible mechanism of the suppressing effect of the goethite for PCDD/F formation. It is likely that iron chlorides react with particulate carbon to form organo-chlorine compounds and promote PCDD/F formation in the gas phase. XRD analysis of combustion ash revealed that the goethite was partially dehydrated and converted to alpha-Fe(2)O(3) and Fe(3)O(4) but no iron chlorides formation. Therefore the goethite impregnated plastics can contribute the reduction of PCDD/Fs and HCB in the exhaust gas during incineration of MSW.

The study of Pb(II) binding to the system humic acid/goethite in acidic medium is reported in the present paper. From a macroscopic point of view, we have constructed the experimental sorption isotherms (using atomic absorption spectroscopy) and compared them with the prediction of the additivity rule. It is found that this system presents positive deviations, that is, the amount sorbed is about an order of magnitude higher than predicted. Apart from this, microscopic and structural aspects have also been studied using in situ and ex situ infrared spectroscopy. These results suggest that the presence of Pb(II) increases the amount of humic acid bound to the oxide. It is proposed that proton displacement due to the interaction between humic substances and the oxide, along with the formation of ternary complexes with the Pb(II) cation bridging the oxide and the humic substances (Type A complexes), cause the deviation from additivity.

Arsenic oxyanions, considered as priority pollutants, were removed from dilute aqueous solutions by sorption onto synthetic goethite, a typical inorganic adsorbent. Flotation was subsequently applied as an effective solid/liquid separation method. The combined process produced a foam concentrate, containing the arsenic-loaded goethite particles. The dispersed-air flotation technique was used for the generation of fine gas bubbles. The main parameters affecting the process were studied and promising results, in terms of arsenic removal and of goethite separation, were obtained.

Photooxidation of arsenite by natural goethite in suspended solution
Iron and arsenic have been found to coexist in a water environment and the fate of arsenite in the aquatic system is influenced by iron. Goethite is a form of iron hydroxide, which is commonly found in sediments. In previous studies, we have used iron complexes to degrade organic pollutants. Results have shown that some organic pollutants could be totally degraded by iron complexes and our work indicated that iron might cause conversion of arsenic when irradiated. This work attempts to investigate the conversion of arsenite [As(III)] using natural goethite, as the iron source, to quantify the effect of various factors on photooxidation. We also consider the possible mechanism for photooxidation of As(III) using a suspension of natural goethite. The As(III) concentration variation under illumination was compared with the one in the dark to quantify the contribution of light to As(III) oxidation to As(V) in goethite suspended solution. The experiments under N2 and air atmosphere confirmed the participation of dissolved oxygen. The photooxidation efficiency of As(III) under different conditions was compared to determine the effect of different environmental factors such as pH value, goethite concentration, and humic acid concentration on the photooxidation reaction. In the solution containing 100 μg L?1 arsenite and 0.1 g?L?1 suspended goethite at pH 3.0, nearly 80 % of As(III) was photooxidized after irradiation by a 250-W metal halogen lamp (λ?≥?313 nm) after 6 h. The effects of initial pH and goethite concentration and humic acid concentration were all examined. The results show that the greatest efficiency of photooxidation of As(III) was at pH 3.0. The extent of photooxidation decreased with increasing goethite concentration and fell sharply in the presence of humic acid under the conditions in this work. Although about 80 % of As(III) was photooxidized after irradiation by a 250-W halogen lamp at pH 3.0 in the presence of goethite suspension, photooxidation was also affected by factors such as pH, concentration of goethite, and presence of humic acid. The scavenger experiments showed that the HO? radical and photogenerated hole are the predominant oxidants in this system responsible for 87.1 % oxidation of As(III), while HO 2 ? /O 2 ?? is responsible for 12.9 % oxidation of As(III).

Adsorption and desorption of cadmium by goethite pretreated with phosphate
Wang K  Xing B 《Chemosphere》2002,48(7):665-670
The adsorption of Cd by oxides or soils have been extensively studied, however, the desorption has received relatively limited attention, especially in the presence of phosphate. In this study, a batch equilibration method was used to investigate Cd sorption and desorption by goethite pretreated with phosphate. Phosphate not only enhanced Cd adsorption, but also accelerated the adsorption process. Compared with Cd adsorption by goethite alone, phosphate substantially moved the adsorption curves (edges) to lower pH range, indicative of enhancement of Cd sorption. The Cd adsorption by the pretreated goethite reached apparent equilibrium within 24 h at 20 degrees C, while such equilibrium was not observed after 4 weeks in the absence of phosphate. Cadmium was more readily released from phosphate-treated goethite. It is believed that phosphate blocked the pores on goethite surface, which lead to the fast adsorption kinetics and high extraction percentage. These results provided strong support for the diffusion of Cd into goethite particles.

The adsorption of naphthoic acids to iron oxides and hydroxides influences strongly their mobility in soils and sediments. Sorption of 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (HNA) to three iron oxides was examined over a wide range of conditions (pH, ionic strength, sorbate and sorbent concentrations). In the examination of HNA sorption, Tempkin model was performed to fit sorption data of HNA onto all iron oxides. The adsorption in the Henry law range increases in the order: goethite相似文献

Boron (B) is an essential element for plants and animals growth that interacts with mineral surfaces regulating its bioavailability and mobility in soils, sediments, and natural ecosystems. The interaction with mineral surfaces is quite important because of a narrow range between boron deficiency and toxicity limits. In this study, the interaction of boric acid with goethite (α-FeOOH) was measured in NaNO3 background solution as a function of pH, ionic strength, goethite and boron concentration representing as adsorption edges and isotherms. Boron adsorption edges showed a bell-shaped pattern with maximum adsorption around pH 8.50, whereas adsorption isotherms were rather linear. The adsorption data were successfully described with the CD-MUSIC model in combination with the Extended Stern (ES) model. The charge distribution (CD) of inner-sphere boron surface complexes was calculated from the geometry optimized with molecular orbital calculations applying density functional theory (MO/DFT). The CD modeling suggested dominant binding of boric acid as a trigonal inner-sphere complex with minor contributions of a tetrahedral inner-sphere complex (at high pH) and a trigonal outer-sphere complex (at low pH). The interpretation with the CD model is consistent with the spectroscopic observations.

The research on separation methods of toxic metals from wastewater streams is continuous and intensive and, among them, sorption processes are considered of particular importance, mainly due to their effectiveness. The sorption of chromate anions and zinc cations from dilute aqueous solutions using a packed-bed (column configuration) of synthesised granulated goethite was investigated in the present study. The examined parameters during this investigation were the following: (1) the initial pH value of metal-laden aqueous solution (two representative values at acidic pH, 3.5 and 5.0, were tested); (2) the quantity of sorbent in the column, corresponding to bed height; and (3) the influence of ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) addition, a common, strong chelating agent. The Bed Depth-Service Time model has been applied to the sorption results in order to model the column operation. The removal efficiency of Cr(VI) anions by the sorptive column was found to be higher than that of Zn(II) cations. The presence of EDTA caused a certain decrease of removal efficiency for the case of hexavalent chromium, due to competition for the same sorption sites, while the removal of divalent zinc was increased, due to variation of cation speciation.

An experimental and theoretical study of Eu(III) sorption on goethite surface was performed in the presence of different background electrolytes (NaCl, NaNO3, KNO3). Results were described using a simple surface complexation, the double-layer model (DLM), and calculations were performed using either Fiteql3.2 or Jchess codes. The surface acidity constants and sites density were first determined by potentiometric titrations. The influence of electrolyte ions on the value of point of zero charge was studied by both potentiometric and electrokinetic measurements in order to assess their possible retention on goethite. The sorption of Eu(III) was then investigated by the batch method, in the three background electrolytes, as a function of pH. The presence of electrolyte ions was found to decrease the immobilization of Eu on goethite. Sorption results were modelled considering ternary surface complexes (goethite surface/europium/electrolyte ions).

The use of goethite (alpha-FeOOH) and hydrogen peroxide was recently found that they could effectively oxidize organic compounds. The study was to investigate the effect of goethite particle size, goethite concentration, Fe2+ and Fe3+ on the 2-chlorophenol oxidation. Results indicated that 2-chlorophenol can be decomposed with hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by goethite and the oxidation rate increased with decreasing goethite particle size. 2-Chlorophenol degradation was almost retarded with 0.8 g/l of goethite because ferrous ions could not be produced at this condition. Addition of Fe2+ and Fe3+ can enhance the catalytic oxidation rate of 2-chlorophenol very efficiently. In conclusion, the main mechanism of goethite catalyzing hydrogen peroxide to oxidize 2-chlorophenol may be due to the catalysis of ferrous ions and goethite surface.

Adsorption of cadmium (Cd) and phosphate by oxides or soils has been extensively studied, but the adsorption/desorption kinetics and mutual effects of these two species in co-existing systems has received little attention. In this study, a batch equilibration method was used to investigate the effect of phosphate and its application time on Cd adsorption and desorption on goethite. The influence of Cd and its application time on phosphate sorption and desorption kinetics was also determined. For Cd adsorption, phosphate was introduced into the system by two sequences: pre-treating goethite at 40 (degrees)C for 1 week, and applying with Cd simultaneously. Similarly, for phosphate sorption, Cd was applied by pre-treating goethite at 40 (degrees)C for 1 week or simultaneous addition with phosphate. Results demonstrated that phosphate added to goethite enhanced Cd adsorption, and facilitated Cd release as compared to untreated goethite. Cadmium had slightly higher adsorption, but a significantly faster desorption rate from the goethite simultaneously treated with phosphate and Cd, as compared to phosphate-pretreated goethite. Cadmium and its application time had little impact on phosphate sorption by goethite. However, phosphate desorption kinetics was affected by Cd application time. When the sorption time was short (15 min), phosphate desorption was faster from the goethite that was simultaneously treated with phosphate and Cd, as compared to Cd pretreated or untreated goethite. In contrast, a longer sorption time (4 weeks) resulted in a higher desorption rate of phosphate from Cd pretreated goethite than simultaneously phosphate-Cd treated goethite. This study provided useful information on adsorption/desorption kinetics in complicated Cd-phosphate-goethite systems.

Seven members (ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, lomefloxacin, pipemidic acid, and flumequine) of the popular fluoroquinolone antibacterial agents (FQs) were found to adsorb strongly to goethite with 50-76% of the added FQ adsorbed under the experimental conditions. The adsorption isotherms fitted well to the Langmuir model. Adsorption was accompanied by slow oxidation of the FQs (except for flumequine) by goethite yielding a range of hydroxylated and dealkylated products. The oxidation kinetics showed different stages in reaction rate, mostly likely caused by accumulation of Fe(II) species on the oxide surface that slowed the reaction. Structurally related amines 1-phenylpiperazine, N-phenylmorpholine, aniline, and N,N-dimethylaniline were found to be oxidized by goethite without significant adsorption. The results strongly indicate that the carboxylic group of FQs is critical for adsorption while the piperazine ring is susceptible to oxidation. A radical mechanism is proposed for the oxidation of FQs by goethite which involves formation of a surface complex between the FQ and surface-bound Fe(III) through adsorption, and initial oxidation at the piperazinyl N1 atom to form radical intermediates that ultimately lead to the final products. This study indicates that Fe oxides in aquatic sediments may well play an important role in the natural attenuation of fluoroquinolone antibacterial agents.

As one of the widely used antibiotics in the world, the environmental risks of tylosin (TYL) received more and more attention. In order to assess its environmental fate and ecological effects accurately, it is necessary to understand the sorption properties of TYL on the soils/sediments. The sorption of TYL on goethite at different pH and ionic strength conditions were measured through a series of batch experiments and the sorption data of TYL were fitted by Freundlich and dual-mode sorption models. It was obvious that sorption was strongly dependent on pH and ionic strength. Sorption capacity of TYL increased as the pH increased and ionic strength decreased. The pH and ionic strength-dependent trends might be related with complexation between cationic/neutral TYL species and goethite. The sorption affinity of TYL on goethite decreased as ionic strength increased, which only occurred at higher TYL concentrations, suggested that inner complex might have dominated process at low concentrations and outer complex might occur at higher concentrations of TYL. Spectroscopic evidence indicated that tricarbonylamide and hydroxyl functional groups of TYL might be accounted for the sorption on mineral surfaces. The experimental data of TYL sorption could be fitted by surface complexation model (FITEQL), indicating that ≡FeOH with TYL interaction could be reasonably represented as a complex formation of a monoacid with discrete sites on goethite. The sorption mechanism of TYL might be related with surface complexation, electrostatic repulsion, and H-bounding on goethite. It should be noticed that the heterogeneous of sorption affinity of TYL on goethite at various environment to assess its environment risk.

Desorption of cadmium from goethite: effects of pH, temperature and aging
Mustafa G  Kookana RS  Singh B 《Chemosphere》2006,64(5):856-865
Cadmium is perhaps environmentally the most significant heavy metal in soils. Bioavailability, remobilization and fate of Cd entering in soils are usually controlled by adsorption-desorption reactions on Fe oxides. Adsorption of Cd on soil colloids including Fe oxides has been extensively studied but Cd desorption from such soil minerals has received relatively little attention. Some factors that affect Cd adsorption on goethite include pH, temperature, aging, type of index cations, Cd concentrations, solution ionic strength and presence of organic and inorganic ions. This research was conducted to study the influence of pH, temperature and aging on Cd desorption from goethite. Batch experiments were conducted to evaluate Cd desorption from goethite with 0.01 M Ca(NO3)2. In these experiments Cd desorption was observed at 20, 40 and 70 degrees C in combination with aging for 16 h, 30, 90 and 180 d from goethite that adsorbed Cd from solutions containing initial Cd concentrations of 20, 80 and 180 microM. Following the adsorption step Cd desorption was measured by 15 successive desorptions after aging at various temperatures. At the lowest amount of initially adsorbed Cd and equilibrium pH 5.5, cumulative Cd desorption decreased from 71% to 17% with aging from 16 h to 180 d and the corresponding decrease at equilibrium pH 6.0 was from 32% to 3%. There was a substantial decrease in Cd desorption with increasing equilibration temperature. For example, in goethite with the lowest amount of initial adsorption at equilibrium pH 5.5, cumulative Cd desorption decreased from 71% to 31% with increase in temperature from 20 to 70 degrees C, even after 16 h. Dissolution of Cd adsorbed goethite in 1M HCl, after 15 successive desorptions with 0.01 M Ca(NO3)2, indicated that approximately 60% of the Cd was surface adsorbed. Overall, dissolution kinetics data revealed that 23% to 88% Cd could not be desorbed, which could possibly be diffused into the cracks and got entrapped in goethite crystals. At elevated temperature increased equilibrium solution pH favoured the formation of CaCO3 and CdCO3 which reasonably decreased Cd desorption. Cadmium speciation showed the formation of calcite and otavite minerals at 40 and 70 degrees C due to increase in pH (>9.5) during aging. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) of these samples also revealed the formation of CaCO3 at elevated temperatures with aging. While mechanisms such as Cd diffusion and/or entrapment into fissures and cracks in goethite structure with increase in temperature and aging are possible.
