A monitoring system enabling detection and determination of the nature of odour nuisance caused by industrial emissions of volatile organic sulphur compounds is presented. The system consists of two continuous, highly sensitive detectors for sulphur compounds at the ppb-level. One of the detectors is equipped with a SOx-scrubber and measures the total amount of non-S02 sulphur compounds. By the use of a newly developed scrubber retaining S02, H2S and CS2 the second detector monitors the presence of odorous mercaptans and organic sulphides in ambient air. Both these continuous detection signals are fed to a data processor which triggers air collection for the determination of the individual compounds by gas chromatographic analysis in the laboratory. The concept and operation, as well as the practical possibilities and applications of the system are explained  相似文献

Today, the presence of contaminants in the environment is a topic of interest for society in general and for the scientific community in particular. A very large amount of different chemical substances reaches the environment after passing through wastewater treatment plants without being eliminated. This is due to the inefficiency of conventional removal processes and the lack of government regulations. The list of compounds entering treatment plants is gradually becoming longer and more varied because most of these compounds come from pharmaceuticals, hormones or personal care products, which are increasingly used by modern society. As a result of this increase in compound variety, to address these emerging pollutants, the development of new and more efficient removal technologies is needed. Different advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), especially photochemical AOPs, have been proposed as supplements to traditional treatments for the elimination of pollutants, showing significant advantages over the use of conventional methods alone. This work aims to review the analytical methodologies employed for the analysis of pharmaceutical compounds from wastewater in studies in which advanced oxidation processes are applied. Due to the low concentrations of these substances in wastewater, mass spectrometry detectors are usually chosen to meet the low detection limits and identification power required. Specifically, time-of-flight detectors are required to analyse the by-products.  相似文献

Levels and patterns of C1-C4/C9 organic nitrates were measured for the first time in Antarctica. The sampling was done by adsorptive enrichment on Tenax TA followed by thermodesorption cold-trap high resolution capillary gas chromatography with electron capture detection. 2-70 1 air on-column have been analyzed this way. C1-C9 alkyl mononitrates, C2-C4 alkyl dinitrates, C2-C4 hydroxy alkyl nitrates, and halocarbons could be identified in air samples collected near the German Neumayer Research Station, Antarctica, in February 1999. Volatile biogenic and anthropogenic halocarbons were used to assess the origin of the air parcels analyzed. The average concentration measured for sigmaC2-C6 alkyl nitrates was in the range of 9.2 +/- 1.8 ppt(v), while the sum of the mixing ratios of six C2-C4 hydroxy alkyl nitrates was in the range of 1.1 +/- 0.2 ppt(v). Moreover, C2-C4 alkyl dinitrates were found at levels near the detection limit of 0.1-0.5 ppt(v). The concentrations of organic nitrates found in Antarctic air represent ultimate baseline levels due to chemical and physical loss processes during long-range transport in the air. The South Atlantic and the Antarctic Ocean as a general secondary source for organic nitrates in terms of an air/sea exchange equilibrium has to be evaluated yet, but it seems logical. Our results confirm the common assumption that there are no biogenic marine sources of C2-C9 organonitrates. We have found a level of > 80 ppt(v) for methyl nitrate. This level if it can be confirmed in a systematic survey requires a strong biogenic source of methyl nitrate in the Antarctic Ocean.  相似文献

This review has attempted to evaluate the present state of our knowledge of the effects on health in man of environmental exposure to oxides of sulfur, sulfates, and particulate matter. There has been a great deal of activity in this field over the last 15 years, and therefore any collation of this material will represent the selected biases of the reviewer. The conclusions reached can be summarized as follows: (1) These pollutants, as they have been measured in epidemiological investigations, can only be considered as indirect indices of general air pollution and in many cases cannot be separated from each other. Therefore, we cannot incriminate a specific source of any one pollutant as the producer of the most harmful substance to reach the ambient air. Conversely, we cannot excuse any specific source of one pollutant because that specific pollutant has not been found to cause disease at a given concentration. The measurements in ambient air are the net results from all sources of pollution in combination with factors influenced by weather and meteorological considerations. (2) Direct effects from acute, high ambient air pollution disasters have been adequately demonstrated. Significant excess mortality has occurred in association with particular air pollution episodes. All of these episodes have occurred during cold weather, and the effects of temperature must also be considered along with elevated levels of smoke and sulfur oxides. (3) Specific working groups exposed to unusually high levels of these pollutants do not demonstrate dramatic effects. This is presumably related to the fact that susceptible people are self-selected out of these environments. (4) Associations between the prevalence of chronic respiratory disease in the general population and specific levels of these air pollutants have been demonstrated. The major thrusts of epidemiological investigations have been to study the effects of chronic exposure to ambient levels of smoke and sulfur dioxide. The studies to date have collected and analyzed point-prevalence data and information obtained from retrospective investigations. Although epidemiological investigations cannot prove a cause-and-effect relationship, the consistency of the results is such that one must conclude that a causal association is likely. In this reviewer’s opinion we have reached the stage at which we no longer need to demonstrate the effect of past exposure to these pollutants. What is needed now is to demonstrate the effects of current and continued exposure. This will require a better understanding of the natural history and pathophysiology of the diseases thought to be associated with chronic exposure to smoke and sulfur dioxide. Because of the nature of chronic respiratory disease, groups of subjects for whom exposure is known, must be followed over extended periods of time. The logical extension of these observations will be the follow-up of large populations for whom exposure has been reduced. Only by studies of this kind may we be able to prove the cause-and-effect relationship which most likely exists.  相似文献

Alkyl nitrates with chain lengths up to fourteen carbons have been detected in the remote troposphere of the South Atlantic Ocean. The concentrations of numerous iso- and n-alkyl nitrates in the range of C3-C12 have been measured. Tenax-GC analysis was applied to determine short chain alkyl nitrates (< C6), while the novel detection of long chain iso- and n-alkyl nitrates was achieved with a high volume sampling technique using silica gel. C3-C12-alkyl nitrates show the lowest concentrations in the trade wind region (3.5 pptv). Higher concentrations in the west wind belt (11.1 pptv) reveal the influence of the South American continent as the source for the alkyl nitrates after long range transport. The concentrations of alkyl nitrates increase in proximity to South America. Measurements of long chain alkyl nitrates in rural air near the city of Ulm (Germany) are given for comparison. In addition, pattern analysis of long chain alkyl nitrates reveal this complex mixture of new compounds to be useful as trace indicators to distinguish continental and marine air masses. Despite the lower photochemical formation yields of primary n-alkyl nitrates compared to secondary n-alkyl nitrates, the primary n-alkyl nitrates are relatively increased in marine air. The reason for this finding cannot be explained so far, but the correlation of secondary/primary n-alkyl nitrates shows a significant differentiation of air samples with continental or marine character.  相似文献

In this study, low pressure systems have been applied for exhaust gas recycling (EGR), which is applied in certain operating conditions. Induction air, exhaust gas flow, amount of exhaust gas added to the induction air, amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the exhaust gas, and amount of carbon dioxide in the induction air mixed with the exhaust gas, have been measured and the EGR ratio has been determined using four different calculation methods. The obtained results have been compared, and it has been noted that all the four methods have given similar results, and the deviation among them has been noted to be 1% at most. Deviations among the results have been explained. In the concluding section, a relation has been formed between the variables chosen as basic parameters, electronic re-circulation gate control, and variables utilised in EGR ratio determination methods.  相似文献

While quality control has been defined and implemented for ambient criteria pollutant monitoring, such as for SO2, O3 and total suspended particulates, most of the noncriteria air pollutants currently being measured have not been subject to similar levels of data assurance.. The New Jersey Project on Airborne Toxic Elements and Organic Substances (ATEOS) included the measurement of nearly 50 gaseous and particulate phase noncriteria pollutants, within the structure of a rigorous quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) program. The following report details the QA/QC results for the particulate and vapor phase pollutants measured during the ATEOS project. Consideration is given to a number of basic differences between measuring inorganic and organic pollutants including method detection limits, number of valid samples, and precision and accuracy of the overall methods. Particular emphasis is placed on how the QA/QC data place limits on statistical analyses of noncriteria air pollutant data sets.  相似文献

Abstract

Efforts to understand and mitigate the health effects of particulate matter (PM) air pollution have a rich and interesting history. This review focuses on six substantial lines of research that have been pursued since 1997 that have helped elucidate our understanding about the effects of PM on human health. There has been substantial progress in the evaluation of PM health effects at different time-scales of exposure and in the exploration of the shape of the concentration-response function. There has also been emerging evidence of PM-related cardiovascular health effects and growing knowledge regarding interconnected general pathophysiological pathways that link PM exposure with cardiopulmonary morbidity and mortality. Despite important gaps in scientific knowledge and continued reasons for some skepticism, a comprehensive evaluation of the research findings provides persuasive evidence that exposure to fine particulate air pollution has adverse effects on cardiopulmonary health. Although much of this research has been motivated by environmental public health policy, these results have important scientific, medical, and public health implications that are broader than debates over legally mandated air quality standards.  相似文献

The photocatalytic elimination of microorganisms from indoor air in realistic conditions and the feasibility of simultaneous elimination of chemical contaminants have been studied at laboratory scale. Transparent polymeric monoliths have been coated with sol-gel TiO(2) films and used as photocatalyst to treat real indoor air in a laboratory-scale single-step annular photocatalytic reactor. The analytical techniques used to characterize the air quality and analyze the results of the photocatalytic tests were: colony counting, microscopy and PCR with subsequent sequencing for microbial quantification and identification; automated thermal desorption coupled to gas chromatography with mass spectrometry detection for chemical analysis. The first experiments performed proved that photocatalysis based on UVA-irradiated TiO(2) for the reduction of the concentration of bacteria in the air could compete with the conventional photolytic treatment with UVC radiation, more expensive and hazardous. Simultaneously to the disinfection, the concentration of volatile organic compounds was greatly reduced, which adds value to this technology for real applications. The fungal colony number was not apparently modified.  相似文献

The utilization of dressed seed for spring sowing is a widespread practice to control some pests with reduced doses of chemical products. However some insecticides employed in maize seed dressing, namely belonging to the neonicotinoid family and fipronil, have been claimed to play a role in the decline of honeybees (Apis mellifera L.). Pneumatic drills used in maize sowing are charged with contributing to the dispersion of the abrasion dust produced by dressed seeds, favoring the contamination of the honeybee habitat. Different devices similar to air deflectors have been introduced on pneumatic drills in order to reduce dust drift. During previous field tests carried out by the authors during recent years reduction of dust concentration both in the air and at soil surface has been shown as a consequence of their application. As field tests are affected by the variability of environmental parameters (namely wind speed and direction) the results are not always reliable, comparable and of a general validity. This paper refers to a sowing simulation test system in which pneumatic drills can be tested at a fixed point under controlled conditions of the main environmental parameters. In the test area, protected by external influences, artificial wind conditions are created by means of a fan. The drill, suitably placed in the test area, operates the seed distribution "sur place" by means of an electric engine connected to the drill's driving wheel. A 22.5 m long sampling area, leeward with respect to the drill position, has been identified. Along the sampling area a series of Petri dishes has been placed, with the aim of capturing the depositing dust and providing the concentration of the active ingredients (a.i.) at ground level. At the same time, three air samplers with PTFE diskette filters have been used for the detection of the a.i. The test system has been used for the test of a pneumatic drill, equipped with and without air deflectors, using maize seed dressed with four a. i. (imidacloprid, clothianidin, thiametoxam, fipronil). The results showed regularly decreasing of the concentrations as distance increased, both in the air and at ground level. Moreover, the difference determined by the adoption of the drift reducing device (air deflectors) resulted clear and it can be quantified at around 50 % of the a.i. amounts observed without deflectors. Finally, the paper proposes a data processing method that, from the values observed at fixed point, provides the theoretical a.i. concentration behavior that would occur in field, under the same conditions of wind speed and direction and working speed. The obtained results are coherent with previous field test.  相似文献

Extensive air pollution studies have been completed in Nashville. One part of the study involved collection of opinions from nearly 8000 people. Opinions were solicited relative to awareness and concern about possible adverse effects of air pollution on health, property, materials, and aesthetics. Responses of the interviewed people are related to several types of pollutant measurements. The results indicate widespread concern about air pollution, and the degree of concern is, in general, closely related to the degree of air contamination experienced by interviewed people. Methodology is discussed, data are analyzed statistically, and conclusions are presented.  相似文献

In the past, many species of pine have been severely damaged by acute forms of air pollution associated with ore smelting. More recently, damage to ponderosa pine in the state of Washington has been associated with atmospheric fluoride, and this species in particular has also suffered smog damage in southern California. In the East, white pine has been declining in the vicinity of certain soft-coal-burning power plants, and in one case downwind from an oil-burning power plant: also, throughout the East, an atmospheric oxidant of unknown source has caused a type of needle blight on white pine. Trash burners and city dump combustion have led to the hilling of certain pine species, leaving other intermixed pine species unharmed. Localized damage to white pine from automobile exhaust has been observed. Differences in the susceptibility of neighboring trees of the same species to a given air pollutant have been observed repeatedly.  相似文献

The present paper summarises the results of the project: 'Survey of Anthropogenic Sources of Dioxins and Furans in the Baltic Region'. As a part of the project, inventories have been carried out in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland by applying the toolkit for quantification of dioxin and furan releases developed by UNEP Chemicals. The main route of direct releases to the environment is emission to air. Total emission to air from Poland was estimated at 490 (88-1,300) g I-TEQ/year, whereas the emissions from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania were estimated as being 14 (2.4-54), 23 (2.6-63) and 17 (2.6-38) g I-TEQ, respectively. In general, the uncertainty on the estimates is very high, and recommendations regarding further development of the inventories have been made, and measures for reducing the releases have been provided.  相似文献

Measurements of urban air quality at monitoring stations in developed countries have frequently involved the criteria gaseous pollutants, particulates, hazardous air pollutants, perceived air quality and relevant meteorological conditions. Large numbers of indicators have therefore been established to quantify emissions, concentrations and environmental and human health impacts of each of these groups of substances. To simplify the data for management, several indicators have been grouped together to form urban air quality indices but the weightings of individual variables is contentious. In industrialising and developing countries, data may be limited and traditional air pollutant indicators cannot often be constructed. The emphasis therefore has to be placed on the development of policy-relevant indicators, such as Response Indicators that reflect different policy principles for regulating air pollutant emissions. Indices that quantify the air quality management capabilities and capacities at the city level provide further useful decision-relevant tools. Four sets of indices, namely, 1. air quality measurement capacity, 2. data assessment and availability, 3. emissions estimates, and 4. management enabling capabilities, and a composite index to evaluate air quality management capability, were constructed and applied to 80 cities. The indices revealed that management capability varied widely between the cities. In some of the cities, existing national knowledge on urban air quality could have been more effectively used for management. It was concluded that for effective urban air quality management, a greater emphasis should be given, not just to monitoring and data capture programmes, but to the development of indicators and indices that empower decision-makers to initiate management response strategies. Over-reliance on restricted, predetermined sets of traditional air quality indicators should be avoided.  相似文献

There is a growing interest in effects of sub-micron, nonsettling particles in the atmosphere among air pollution control agencies throughout the country. This type of pollution, generally referred to as the “soiling index” of the atmosphere, is produced primarily by the incomplete combustion of fuels. The measurement procedure has been fairly well standardized, the values being reported as Cohs or Ruds per 1000 linear feet of air. Using a similar technique, a method of quantitating smoke emission in objective terms first demonstrated by W. C. L. Hemeon in 1953, has been applied to source testing at several operating plants by the Cincinnati Division of Air Pollution Control. The source strength will be called “soiling potential” while the effect in the general atmosphere is termed “soiling index.” The soiling potential unit is Rud-ft2 per cubic foot exhaust gases or Rud-ft2 per unit of fuel input. The “Soiling Potential” sampler is described and results of tests are given. Included is the use of soiling potential in quantitating smoke emission from single sources and for constructing area wide inventory of smoke emission. The use of an area wide smoke emission inventory in Rudft2 in a simple diffusion model for calculating the soiling index (Rud-ft2/1000 cu ft) in the general atmosphere at a given point is explored.  相似文献

In this paper we present the development and application of a model for indoor air quality. The model represents a departure from the standard box models typically used for indoor environments which has applicability in residences and office buildings. The model has been developed for a physical system consisting of sequential compartments which communicate only with adjacent compartments. Each compartment may contain various source and sink terms for a pollutant as well as leakage, and air transfer from adjacent compartments. The mathematical derivation affords rapid calculation of equilibrium concentrations in an essentially unlimited number of compartments. The model has been applied to air quality in the passenger cabin of three commercial aircraft. Simulations have been performed for environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) under two scenarios, CO2 and water vapor. Additionally, concentrations in one aircraft have been simulated under conditions different from the standard configuration. Results of the simulations suggest the potential for elevated concentrations of ETS in smoking sections of non-air-recirculating aircraft and throughout the aircraft when air is recirculated. Concentrations of CO2 and water vapor are consistent with expected results. We conclude that this model may be a useful tool in understanding indoor air quality in general and on aircraft in particular.  相似文献

We propose a method to evaluate the detection abilities of networks used for protection purposes. Such networks are designed for the detection of nuclear, biological or gaseous emissions, without constraint on the source location. Their assigned goal is to have the best chance to detect a threatening emission located anywhere in the vicinity of a domain to protect. Two sensors siting applications are addressed: sensors placed in the surroundings of a facility to protect, or sensors carried by people scattered within a small area. A network protection ability is related both to its detection scope, and to its response time. To assess the performance of such networks, two statistical indicators are therefore designed: the detection probability, computed on a large number of possible source locations, and the saturation time, which is the time when the maximum detection probability has been reached.Simulations are then carried out with the Polyphemus air quality modeling system for many emission scenarios, including 961 possible source locations, various emitted species, and a few representative meteorological situations. This allows to assess the performance of single sensors as well as full networks, and their sensitivity to parameters like meteorological conditions and source characteristics. The emitted quantity and meteorological dispersion are found to be important parameters, whereas the species type does not significantly influence the results. Two network design methods are considered: (1) networks composed of a given number of the “best” sensors according to an indicator, and (2) sensors placed in circles around the protected domain. The networks built with respect to the detection probability show good results with a limited number of sensors, while the saturation time is not reliable enough to build networks. The networks based on circles also show a good performance in the studied cases, provided there is a sufficient number of sensors.  相似文献

It is now well understood that air pollution produces significant adverse health effects in the general public and over the past 60 years, there have been on-going efforts to reduce the emitted pollutants and their resulting health effects. There are now shifting patterns of industrialization with many heavily polluting industries moving from developed countries with increasingly stringent air quality standards to the developing world. However, even in decreasing concentrations of pollutants, health effects remain important possibly as a result of changes in the nature of the pollutants as new chemicals are produced and as other causes of mortality and morbidity are reduced. In addition, there is now the potential for deliberate introduction of toxic air pollutants by local armed conflicts and terrorists. Thus, there are new challenges to understand the role of the atmospheric environment on public health in this time of changing economic and demographic conditions overlaid with the willingness to indirectly attack governments and other established entities through direct attacks on the general public.  相似文献
