Hinia reticulata and Nucella lapillus (collected from 1989 to 1991 at Pointe de Pléneuf and Méan Mélen, France, respectively) exhibit imposex in response to tributyltin (TBT) pollution leached from antifouling paints and proved to be good TBT bioindicators. H. reticulata was kept for 18 mo under TBT-free conditions in the laboratory, but no evidence for imposex remission was found. A second series of experiments showed that food chain uptake of TBT from a contaminated diet is an important mode of TBT exposure in H. reticulata. Comparative tank experiments with H. reticulata and N. lapillus demonstrated that the same type of TBT exposure resulted in comparable TBT body burdens, biological concentration factors, and imposex development in both species [measured as increase of VDS (vas deferens sequence index), uncubed RPS (relative penis size index) and average female penis length]. Differences in imposex development of natural and laboratory populations are discussed against the background of different types of TBT contamination of their food. A statistical study, based on an analysis of natural populations of both prosobranch species, makes a comparison of the specific TBT sensitivity of the two bioindicators possible. As a consequence it is proposed that TBT biomonitoring programs in Europe should use both prosobranchs as indicator species.  相似文献

A static renewal test was run for 30 d to assess the effects of the antifoulant tributyltin (TBT, nominal concentrations of 50, 125, 250 and 500 ng Sn l-1) on the survival and growth of 240 m-long pediveliger larvae of the bivalve Scrobicularia plana (da Costa) settling in fine sand. Exposure to nominal TBT levels of 125 ng Sn l-1 (actual range of 37 to 102 ng Sn l-1, as analysed) resulted in substantial mortalities and negligible shell growth of individuals. More importantly, larval shell growth at the lowest concentration tested (i.e. nominal 50 ng Sn l-1 or 14 to 32 ng Sn l-1, as analysed) was significantly reduced (by a factor of 4) and grossly abnormal. In contrast, some control postlarvae had begun developing siphons as they attained a length of 600 to 700 m by the end of this test, thereby completing metamorphosis and becoming juveniles. The results are discussed in relation to the widespread disappearance of S. plana in North Atlantic European estuaries during the 1980s and the concurrent TBT pollution in their waters. It is inferred that TBT is likely to have contributed to the reported demise of clam populations by preventing the successful and timely progress of their pediveliger larvae.  相似文献

Imposex and decline in reproductive output in marine gastropods have been linked to tributyltin (TBT) exposure. This study describes Chesapeake Bay, USA, veined rapa whelk Rapana venosa imposex incidence and sex ratios from 1998 to 2009. Tissue TBT concentrations (ng g?1) were examined with respect to whelk sex, size, and water temperature at the time of collection, and also to egg case size, hatching success, and veliger diameter. Imposex incidence declined and population sex ratios moved closer to parity from 1998 to 2009. Observed TBT concentrations (ng g?1) were higher in James River than in Ocean View whelks with higher TBT concentrations observed in males than in females. Exponential declines in TBT concentrations from female-specific first to last clutches within a reproductive season were observed, indicating that whelks depurate TBT through egg case deposition. Egg capsule hatching success and veliger size were similar for female and imposex whelks. The R. venosa imposex levels observed in Chesapeake Bay apparently do not affect the production, release, or viability of larvae.  相似文献

Mussels, Mytilus edulis planulatus, were collected from Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, Australia, in February 1984, to test the assumption that they are integrators of cadmium pollution. Groups of mussels were subjected to the same average dose of cadmium (21 g l-1), administered according to different dosing regimes over 4 wk (Regimes 1, 2, 3, 5); other groups received twice the average dose (42 g l-1) in half the time (Regime 4). During each regime, the mussels were exposed to the different cadmium concentrations for one week at each concentration. Nominally, the regimes were: (1) 36 g (Wk 1) to 26 g (Wk 2) to 16 g (Wk 3) to 6 g (Wk 4) Cd l-1; (2) 6 to 16 to 26 to 36 g Cd l-1; (3) 21 to 21 to 21 to 21 g Cd l-1; (4) 42 to 42 g Cd l-1; (5) 42 to 42 g Cd l-1 to background (<0.5 g) to background. Differences in cadmium accumulation by mussels from Regimes 1 and 4 were not statistically significant, nor were differences in accumulation between mussels from Regimes 2 and 3. However, mussels from Regimes 1 and 4 had accumulated significantly more cadmium than had mussels from Regimes 2 and 3. Accumulation by mussels from Regime 5 was not significantly different from that by mussels from any of the other regimes. These results suggest that, at least for cadmium, the assumption that mussels are integrators of pollution should be treated with caution. They also have implications with regard to the quantitative biological monitoring of pollution. For example, even in a carefully controlled monitoring program, using mussels of standard size and condition, significant differences in cadmium content between mussels need not indicate exposure to different levels of contamination. Rather, these differences could reflect differences in the regime by which the contamination was received.  相似文献

Monthly variation in photosynthesis, dark respiration, chlorophyll a content and carbon: nitrogen (C:N) ratios in different lamina sections of adult plants of Ascoseira mirabilis Skottsberg from King George Island, Antarctica, was investigated between September 1993 and February 1994. Light saturated net photosynthesis (P max) showed maximum values in September (12 to 25 mol O2 g-1 fr wt h-1), and decreased towards the summer to values ranging between 2.0 and 5.0 mol O2 g-1. In the distal section, however, a second optimum occurred in December (25 mol O2 g-1 fr wt h-1). Dark respiration rates were also highest in October and November and decreased strongly in December to February (6.0 and 1.0 mol O2 g-1 fr wt h-1, respectively). Gross photosynthesis exhibited high values between September and December. Concomitant with the seasonal decrease of photosynthetic efficiency () from mean values of 1.2 mol O2 g-1 fr wt h-1 (mol photons cm-2 s-1)-1 in September to 0.3 mol O2 g-1 fr wt h-1 (mol photons cm-2 s-1)-1 in January, the initial light saturating point (I k) gradually increased from 19 to 60 mol photons m-2 s-1. Likewise C:N ratios were low in spring (12 to 13) and increased in summer (20). In general, the photosynthetic parameters P max, gross photosynthesis, and Chl a concentrations were significantly higher in the distal section of the thallus. In contrast, C:N ratios were lower in the distal section of the lamina. The results show that photosynthesis obviously strongly supports growth of the alga in late winter to spring, as it does in some morphologically related brown algae from temperate and polar regions. The pedal retractor muscle of Nassarius coronatus, unlike most mollusc muscles, contains high activities of both octopine dehydrogenase (159 IU g-1 wet wt muscle) and D-lactate dehydrogenase (40 IU g-1 wet wt muscle). Pedal retractor muscles show accumulation of octopine (increase of 4.7 mol g-1 wet wt muscle), and a fall in arginine phosphate concentration (decrease of 4.1 mol g-1 wet wt musscle) after exercise. During recovery from exercise, octopine returns to resting levels after about 120 min, D-lactate accumulates (5.1 mol g-1 wet wt muscle), and arginine phosphate returns to resting levels within 30 min. D-lactate (2.0 mol g-1 wet wt muscle) accumulates during long-term exposure to air. The results show that octopine dehydrogenase and D-lactate dehydrogenase can function to catalyze the terminal step of glycolysis during muscle anoxia associated with these different physiological states.  相似文献

Two studies were conducted to observe effects of dibutyltin (DBT) and tributyltin (TBT) on larvae of Mytilus edulis for an exposure period of 25 d. Endpoints for evaluation were shell growth and mortality measured at 33 d. Larvae were cultured in a new laboratory assay chamber in a recirculating static test. The control, 2, 20, and 200 g/l DBT-treated populations had mean shell lengths of 527, 523, 417, and 180 m, respectively. Survival was 1% for the 200 g/l DBT-treated population, but ranged from 73 to 83% for controls, 2, and 20 g/l treatments. The no-observed-effect concentration (NOEC) was 2 g/l for DBT, while the lowest-observed-effect concentration (LOEC) was 20 g/l. The chronic toxicity value was 6.3 g/l. In the TBT bioassay, mean shell lengths for the control, 0.006, 0.050, and 0.130 g/l-treated populations were 565, 437, 385, and 292 m, respectively. Control survival was 74%, whereas TBT-treated populations survival ranged from 52 to 58%. The NOEC for TBT was 0.006 g/l TBT and the LOEC was 0.050. A chronic toxicity value of 0.017 g/l was calculated. The results of this study indicated that the toxicity of DBT was less than that of TBT. It was concluded that shell length was inversely related to exposure level in both DBT and TBT bioassays. In this study, we have observed TBT effects at lower exposure levels in the laboratory than previously reported, and also report the first data for DBT effects on mussel larvae.  相似文献

Imposex (the occurrence of penis and vas deferens in females) in Hexaplex trunculus collected from Malta (Central Mediterranean) in 1992 is reported. This phenomenon is related to the levels of tributyltin (TBT) in the organisms as well as in sediments. Imposex indices (relative penis size and vas deferens sequence) are used to biomonitor coastal contamination by TBT for the first time in the Mediterranean. In its response to TBT, H. trunculus is ranked as one of the most sensitive neogastropod species studied so far. Accumulation of TBT and its metabolites in the digestive glands, gonads and the rest of the body are described, and sex-related differences are shown. No preferential female mortalities are recorded in populations exposed to high levels of TBT. However, a reported shift in the size frequency distribution of H. trunculus in contaminated sites, towards bigger snails, may suggest reduced reproductive potential.  相似文献

The mechanism, and factors influencing the process of arsenic accumulation and elimination in a food chain [Fucus spiralis (L.) Littorina littoralis (L.) Nucella lapillus (L.)] were examined using the radioisotope 74As. Organisms were collected during 1978 from the estuary of Restronguet. Creek in southwest England. Arsenate uptake by L. littoralis increased linearly with increasing external arsenate concentration up to ca. 500 g 1-1 but was independent at higher arsenate concentrations. Arsenic uptake by L. littoralis was suppressed by metabolic inhibition (potassium cyanide) and lowered salinity. At 26°C, arsenic uptake was twice that at 10°C. L. littoralis accumulated 1o times more arsenic from solution than N. lapillus. Approximately 91% of 74As accumulated from water by L. littoralis was found in the soft tissues, especially the digestive gland and gonads, but in N. lapillus 85% was associated with the shell. Arsenate uptake was twice that of arsenite in L. littoralis. Phosphate at normal environmental levels (2.4 M) did not influence the accumulation of arsenic by L. littoralis, although concentration-dependent inhibition of arsenic uptake was found between 8 and 17 M. Compared with macroalgae, the marine snails exhibit a much greater ability for eliminating arsenic. In L. littoralis the elimination of 74As absorbed from sea water occurred in three stages, each contining equal amounts of the initial 74As pool, with biological half-lives of 4, 13 and 47 d. A biphasic pattern of elimination was found for food-labelled snails (L. littoralis and N. lapillus). The rapid compartment, contributing a third of the arsenic, had a half-life of 4 d, while that of the slow compartment was 12 to 13 d. Fed snails eliminated arsenic more rapidly and extensively than starved individuals. All arsenic in the tissues of the snails studied was available for exchange with that in the environment. The diet is by far the major source of arsenic in L. littoralis and N. lapillus, which appear equally efficient at assimilating arsenic from food.  相似文献

A male genital defect was reported in a Nucella lapillus (L.) population at Dumpton Gap (England). This defect was termed Dumpton syndrome (DS) and appears to be a genetic feature. Its main characteristic is the absence of penis (aphally) in males and in females. In 1992, such a phenomenon was discovered in populations in the vicinity of Brest (Brittany, France). DS-affected females exhibit fewer tributyltin-induced imposex characteristics than expected in normal individuals. The percentage of female sterilization is thus lower, favouring population survival. In consequence, the DS is considered to be a pollution-resistance feature. Comparison with the Dumpton population revealed similarities and differences in the DS characteristics. It is thus hypothesized that the DS observed at the two locations is due to two different biological mechanisms. Indeed, aphallic males with a split prostate were observed but no underdevelopment of their vas deferens and testis was noted in the present study. In this gonochoristic gastropod species, the most DS-affected males in Brest possess an ovotestis and it is thus hypothesized that feminity is remnant in N. lapillus. Incidence of abnormality is ten times higher in females than in males. This suggested that a sex-difference operates in the Brest phenomenon.  相似文献

Four endosymbiotic diatoms were isolated from 2 species of larger foraminifera collected in the Red Sea and Hawaii. The photoadaptive responses of the cultured diatoms were measured at 312, 19 and 7 W cm-2. Two of the diatoms (Fragilaria shiloi and Nitzschia laevis), both isolated from Amphistegina lessonii, grew fastest at 312 W cm-2. The other two diatoms (N. valdestriata and N. panduriformis) which were isolated from Heterostegina depressa, grew best at 19 W cm-2. Of the four diatoms, F. shiloi grew best at high light levels. Also in F. shiloi, chlorophyll c content per cell was directly proportional to light intensity; in contrast chlorophyll a and carotenoids increased to maxima at 19 W cm-2. The chlorophyll a and c and carotenoid content of N. valdestriata were also maximal at 19 W cm-2. Photosynthetic rates, measured by respirometry, suggested that the diatoms were photoinhibited at higher light intensities and did well at moderately low light intensities (175W cm-2). The photocompensation points of all 4 diatoms were about 2% of the light available in the spring at 1-m depth at Elat on the Red Sea. At Elat the photocompensation point would lie between 40 and 50 m if the algae were free in nature. The amount of attenuation of light by the shells of the host has not yet been measured. Presumably photocompensation of the algae within hosts is reached at depths less than 40 m.  相似文献

Alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) was determined in 44 species of marine macrophytes collected throughout 1991 and 1992 along the southern coast of Spain. Activity varied between 0.83 mol paranitrophenol (pNP) released g-1 dry wt h-1 in Ulva rigida var. gigantea and 238.8 mol pNP g-1 dry wt h-1 in Bangia fuscopurpurea. Using a histochemical method, APA sites were located in five of these species: Corallina elongata Ellis et Soland, Gelidium latifolium (Grev.) Thur. et Born., G. sesquipedale (Clem.) Born. et Thur., Porphyra umbilicalis (L.) Kützing and Zostera noltii Hornem. Enzymatic activity was found in the outer part of the thallus, either on the cell wall or in the cortical cells. In the marine phanerogam Z. noltii activity was also located in the vascular bundle. The results suggest that APA is present in many, if not all, marine macrophytes from southern Spain, and plays a relevant role in the utilization of dissolved organic phosphorus compounds.  相似文献

Michaelis-Menten uptake kinetics were observed at all light intensities. With constant illumination, the Vmax and K1 in nitrate uptake over the natural light intensity range of 0 to 2000 E were 0.343 g-at NO3–N(g)-1 at protein-N h-1 and 26 E, respectively. Nitrate uptake was inhibited at higher light intensities. The Ks for nitrate uptake did not vary as a function of light intensity remaining relatively constant at 0.62 g-at NO3–N 1-1. With intermittent illumination, the Vmzx for light intensity in nitrate uptake over a light intensity range of 0 to 5000 E was 0.341 g-at NO3–N(g)-1-at protein-N h-1. No inhibition of nitrate uptake was observed at higher than natural light intensities. Chaetoceros curvisetus will probably never experience light inhibition of nitrate uptake under natural conditions.  相似文献

Nyctiphanes australis contained, on a dry weight basis, an average of 52% crude protein and 5.0 to 9.5% lipid. The fatty acid profile of N. australis was markedly unsaturated, with a mean total 3 fatty acid content of 48.6±2.4% of total fatty acids. N. australis contained high levels of the essential long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids eicosapentaenoic (EPA, 20:53) and docosahexaencic (DHA, 22:63), ranging from 16.6 to 36.5% and 11.1 to 24.8%, respectively. The concentration of total carotenoids ranged from 137 to 302 g g–1 dry wt, with no significant differences in concentrations found with season or life stage. The carotenoids were comprised of 79.5% astaxanthin and 20.5% canthaxanthin. The lipid and pigment compositions of N. australis suggest that the species could serve as a suitable feed source for cultured salmonids. Like other euphausiids, N. australis contained high levels of fluoride, with a seasonal range between 277 and 3507 g g–1 dry wt. The high fluoride levels found in N. australis would not detract from its potential as a feed source for salmonids because ingested fluoride is largely absorbed by the skeleton.  相似文献

Imposex and butyltin body burden were assessed in 2011 along the Basque coast (northern Spain) in two gastropod species (Nassarius reticulatus and Nassarius nitidus) four years after an initial survey in 2007. The aim of this re-survey was to monitor the effectiveness of the European ban on the use of tributyltin (TBT) based antifouling paints on ships’ hulls (EC 782/2003). Imposex levels in 2011 were lower than those determined in 2007 at most of the sampling sites. Accordingly, TBT concentrations in the female body burden of Nassarius reticulatus varied from 43 to 250 ng Sn/g in dry weight in 2011, which was a lower maximum than in 2007. Nevertheless, the results for the butyltin degradation index suggest that there have been recent inputs of TBT within the two main Basque harbours. Overall, the legislative measure is contributing to the reduction of TBT effects on the Basque coast although its presence is still evident.  相似文献

Employing a special batch technique which involves extremely low concentrations of the alga Selenastrum capricornutum, it is shown that a growth rate of ca. 75% of optimum growth occurs at a concentration of 0.02 g-at N(NH4 +) l-1. The low concentrations of this N-source in the oligotrophic parts of the oceans (ca. 0.06 g-at l-1) thus give rise to a borderline deficiency. As the half-saturation constant (K S) for growth was recorded at 0.05 g-at N(NO3 -), this ion can hardly be of much importance at the low concentrations present in these parts of the oceans. It is wrong to assert that N is the primary limiting nutrient. Phosphate also is found at concentrations giving rise to a borderline deficiency.  相似文献

Specimens of the oceanic decapod Systellaspis debilis were collected from six sites in the East Atlantic Ocean between 1970 and 1984, and were analysed for Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn and Cd. The data confirm that there are small but significant differences in mean metal concentrations from some sites which showed no obvious pattern in relation to geographic location of the samples. As a result, ranges of site means are quoted as baseline levels for each metal (g g-1 dry wt): 2.3 to 2.9 g Mn g-1, 31.2 to 77.8 g Fe g-1, 25.9 to 83.4 g Cu g-1, 41.9 to 92.9 gZn g-1, 11.1 to 31.8 g Cd g-1. The concentration of cadmium in S. debilis from all sites was raised relative to cadmium concentrations reported for coastal decapods, perhaps as a result of dietary enrichment. Metal accumulation may provide useful information for understanding the complex feeding behaviour of many oceanic animals.  相似文献

The reef coral Pocillopora damicornis (Linnaeus) was grown for 8 wk in four nutrient treatments: control, consisting of ambient, unfiltered Kaneohe Bay seawater [dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN, 1.0 M) and dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP, 0.3 M)]; nitrogen enrichment (15 M DIN as ammonium); phosphorus enrichment (1.2 M DIP as inorganic phosphate); and 15 M DIN+1.2 M DIP. Analyses of zooxanthellae for C, N, P and chlorophyll a after the 8 wk experiment indicated that DIN enrichment increased the cellular chlorophyll a and excess nitrogen fraction of the algae, but did not affect C cell-1. DIP enrichment decreased both C and P cell-1, but the decrease was proportionally less for C cell-1. the response of cellular P to both DIN and DIP enrichment appeared to be in the same direction and could not be explained as a primary effect of external nutrient enrichment. The observed response of cellular P might be a consequence of in situ CO2 limitation. DIN enrichment could increase the CO2 (aq) demand by increasing the net production per unit area. DIP enrichment could slow down calcification, thus decreasing the availability of CO2 (aq) in the coral tissue.Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology Contribution No. 920  相似文献

The relative importance of 3 different sources for biological production of nitrite in seawater was studied. Decomposition of fecal pellets of the copepod Calanus helgolandicus (at a concentration of approximately 12 g-at N/l), in seawater medium, released small amounts of ammonia over a 6 week period. It nitrifying bacteria were added to the fecal pellets nitrite was barely detectable over the same period. Decomposition of phytoplankton (present at a concentration of about 8 g-at particulate plant N/l) with added heterotrophic bacteria, released moderate amounts of ammonia over a 12 week period. If the ammonia-oxidizing bacterium Nitrosocystis oceanus was added to the decomposing algae, nitrite was produced at a rate of 0.2 g-at N/l/week. Heterotrophic nitrification was not observed when 7 open-ocean bacteria were tested for their ability to oxidize ammonia. The diatom Skeletonema costatum, either non-starved or starved of nitrogen, produced nitrite when growing with 150 or 50 g-at NO 2 - -N/l at a light intensity of about 0.01 ly/min. When nitrate in the medium was exhausted, S. costatum assimilated nitrite. If starved of vitamin B12, both non-N-starved and N-starved cells of S. costatum produced nitrite in the medium with 150 g-at NO 3 - -N/l. Nitrate was not exhausted and cell densities reached 2x105/ml due to vitamin B12 deficiency. If light intensity was reduced to 0.003 ly/min under otherwise similar conditions, cells did not grow due to insufficient light, and nitrite was not produced. In the sea, it appears that, in certain micro-environments, decomposition of particulate matter releases ammonia with its subsequent oxidation to nitrite. The amounts of these nutrients and the rate at which they are produced are dependent upon the nature of the materials undergoing decomposition and the associated bacteria. In certain other areas of the sea, where phytoplankton standing stock is high and nitrate is non-limiting, excretion by these organisms is a major source of nitrite.  相似文献

The photosynthesis–irradiance response of Ecklonia radiata (C. Agardh) J. Agardh, a common kelp in the temperate southern hemisphere, was investigated in situ throughout the year and across a depth profile at West Island, South Australia. Temperature and irradiance environment altered throughout the year, varying at 3 m between 14–20°C and 279–705 mol photons m–2 s–1. Photosynthetic capacity (Pm) varied throughout the year between 177–278 mol O2 g–1 dry wt h–1 at 3 m and 133–348 mol O2 g–1 dry wt h–1 at 10 m. The irradiance required for sub-saturation of photosynthesis (Ek) varied between 97–152 and 81–142 mol photons m–2 s–1 for 3 m and 10 m respectively, and the respiration rate varied between 15–36 and 13–20 mol O2 g–1 dry wt h–1 for 3 m and 10 m. A clear seasonal change in photokinetic parameters was detected and provided strong evidence for a seasonal acclimation response. During winter an increase in the efficiency of light utilisation at low irradiance () was accompanied by a decrease in both Ek and that required for photosynthetic compensation. Pm also increased during the winter and autumn months and respiratory requirements decreased. These changes enable E. radiata to display an optimal photosynthetic performance throughout the year despite significant changes in the surrounding environment.Communicated by P.W.
