The immobilization of MSWI-scrubber residues with soluble PO4(3-) was studied and compared to the immobilization using cement. The DIN 38414-S4 leaching protocol and pH dependent leaching were used to evaluate the leaching of Pb and Zn. Four different scrubber residues from MSW combustion (Pb concentration: 2.8-4.8 mg/g; Zn concentration: 3.0-12.3 mg/g) were mixed with water and cement or Na2HPO4 as source of soluble PO4(3-) at dosages of at least 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 g per g residue. With cement as well as with PO4(3-) a reduction in Pb and Zn leaching was observed. With 0.4 g cement per g residue, the Pb leaching was reduced by a factor ranging from 70 to 100, but still exceeded the Pb landfill limit of 2 mg/l. With PO4(3-) the Pb leaching was reduced with a factor of 100-300 to below 2 mg/l. The Zn landfill limit (10 mg/l) was only exceeded by one untreated residue. Adding 0.2 g cement or 0.1 g PO4(3-) per g of that residue was enough to reduce leaching below 10 mg/l. However, when 0.6 g Na2HPO4 per g residue was added to a lime based scrubber residue, an increase in Zn leaching up to 12.5 mg/l was observed due to an increase in pH of up to 13.0. When using NaH2PO4 and H3PO4 no such increase in Zn leaching was observed. pH dependent leaching performed on one of the four residues showed that in the pH range of 2.5-6, Pb leaching was 100-50 times lower with Na2HPO4 treatment than with cement. In the pH range from 7-11, almost equal results were obtained for cement treated and Na2HPO4 treated residue. Above a pH of 12, Pb leaching was three times lower for the PO(4)(3-)-treated residue than for the cement treated residue. With soluble PO4(3-), Pb leaching below 2 mg/l could be attained at a dosage of 0.27 g PO4(3-)/g residue. With cement, Pb leaching was never below 2 mg/l.  相似文献

An attempt was made to judge the environmental compatibility, the governing leaching mechanism, and mobility patterns in a waste–cement solidified/stabilized matrix after 21 days of curing. The mixed sludge from a steel pickling facility was stabilized by ordinary Portland cement. Iron was the major leachable metal, along with Pb, Zn, and Mn. To characterize the leaching behavior, the mobility and mechanism of leaching were determined by diffusion leaching tests. In the solidified/stabilized matrix, the mobility of all the elements studied was reduced, and average to low mobility was observed. Values for the negative log of the effective diffusion coefficient of more than 12.5 were obtained for the metals. The dominant leaching mechanisms were surface wash off in the initial stage, followed by diffusion. The environmental performance of the solidified/stabilized product when considered in terms of mass leached over 64 days was found to be satisfactory for consideration for the safe disposal and reuse of waste.  相似文献

The performance of products arising from the stabilization/solidification of slags from lead batteries recycle into a Portland cement matrix has been evaluated not only in order to get a stabilized waste to be disposed of according to the current legislation, but also to obtain a recyclable material, with both economic and environmental benefits. Under this respect a detailed characterization of raw slags has been performed and different slag-cement samples have been prepared by varying the slag content. The parameters related to the cementation process have been evaluated and a series of tests on the final waste forms have been carried out, aimed at assessing both mechanical performance and leaching behaviour. In spite of the acceptable values for flexural, compressive and tensile strength, however, the high release of lead from the solidification products seems to be a limiting factor for a reusable material. While explanations of such phenomenon are given (high alkalinity of Portland cement; early "doping" of cementitious components by lead in the amorphous state), the main conclusion of the research work is that further efforts should be addressed to the adoption of a different or a modified incorporation matrix.  相似文献

Waste incineration bottom ash and treated flue gas cleaning products mixed with 2.5% of cement (50 kg/m3) were tested in the laboratory in terms of compressive strength and tank leaching tests over a 64-day period. Although the material displayed lower mechanical strength than a reference concrete, the strength still was sufficient for use as a base layer for roads. The metal content in the incineration-residue-based specimens was up to 100 times higher than in the reference concrete, suggesting that the mixed waste incineration residue should be used only for dedicated purposes. The leaching of Cl and Na was increased by a factor of 20-100 from the incineration-residue-based specimens as compared to the reference, while the leaching of K, Ca and SO4 was increased by a factor of 2-10. The leaching of heavy metals was also higher from the incineration-residue-based specimens than from the reference with respect to Cu (50 times), Cd, Pb and Zn (5 times), but not with respect to Cr and Ni. The leaching curves did only allow for a closer evaluation of the leaching process in a few cases. The physical retention of the constituents seemed to be the same in the reference as in the incineration-residue-based specimens. Heavy metal leaching was limited by enhanced chemical retention in the incineration-residue-specimens as compared to the reference. Since no quality criteria in terms of leaching from a monolithic material are currently available, the leaching issue must be evaluated case by case.  相似文献

Nuclear waste repositories need highly durable cementitious materials to function for over thousands of years while resisting leaching and degradation. The durability of cementitious material can be effectively improved by reducing permeability and by changing cement hydrates to a less soluble matrix. This paper describes the properties of carbonated new cementitious materials containing belite-rich cement and gamma-2CaO.SiO2 as main components. In addition, the long-term leaching properties are investigated and compared with ordinary Portland cement by using a predictive leaching model.  相似文献

The leaching of lead from cement-based solidified waste forms mixed at different water/cement ratios was studied by conducting equilibrium and semi-dynamic leaching tests using deionized water and sodium chloride solutions. The results suggest that leaching of the primary constituents of the cement (calcium, silicon and sulfate) is controlled by solubility equilibria, with increased leaching into chloride solutions due to ionic strength effects. The original porosity of the waste forms increased with water/cement ratio and chloride solutions further increased it as a result of decalcification. Lead leaching was generally low, and appears to be a transport-controlled process, such that leaching correlates positively with porosity.  相似文献

The reuse of debris from building demolition is of increasing public interest because it decreases the volume of material to be disposed to landfill. This research is focused on the evaluation of the possibility of reusing recycled aggregate from construction or demolition waste (C&D) as a substitute for natural aggregate in concrete production. In most applications, cement based materials are used for building construction due to their cost effectiveness and performance; however their impact on the surrounding environment should be monitored. The interstitial pore fluid in contact with hydrated cementitious materials is characterized by persistent alkaline pH values buffered by the presence of hydrate calcium silicate, portlandite and alkaline ions. An experimental plan was carried out to investigate concrete structural properties in relation to alkali release in aqueous solution. Results indicate that the presence of recycled aggregate increases the leachability of unreactive ions (Na, K, Cl), while for calcium the substitution resulted in a lower net leaching. In spite of the lower mechanical resistance (40% less), such a waste concrete may be suggested as more environmentally sustainable.  相似文献

Results are presented of experiments performed to optimize the solidification/stabilization system for metallic elements in aqueous solution. This system involves mixing cement and a solution of metallic elements in a conventional mixer: the paste thus obtained is transferred drop by drop into a recipient filled with an aqueous solution of NaOH at 20% by weight, in which it solidifies immediately. The separate use of chloride solutions of Li+, Cr3+, Pb2+ and Zn2+ makes it possible to obtain granules displaying various levels of compressive strength. Three different inertization matrices were used in the experiments, the first consisting solely of Portland cement, the second of Portland cement and a superplasticizer additive, and the third of Portland cement partially replaced with silica-fume and superplasticizer. The results of the tests performed showed a very low level of leaching into the alkaline solidification solution for Cr3+, the quantity leached being under 2% as against higher levels for the other metallic elements. For all the considered elements, the best results were obtained by using silica-fume in the inertization matrix.  相似文献

The process of reducing acid leaching of manganiferous ore is aimed at the extraction of manganese from low grade manganese ores. This work is focused on the iron removal operation. The following items have been considered in order to investigate the effect of the main operating conditions on solid waste disposal and on the process costs: (i) type and quantity of the base agent used for iron precipitation, (ii) effective need of leaching waste separation prior to the iron removal operation, (iii) presence of a second leaching stage with the roasted ore, which might also act as a preliminary iron removal step, and (iv) effect of tailings washing on the solid waste classification. Different base compounds have been tested, including CaO, CaCO3, NaOH, and Na2CO3. The latter gave the best results concerning both the precipitation process kinetics and the reagent consumption. The filtration of the liquor leach prior to iron removal was not necessary, implying significant savings in capital costs. A reduction of chemical consumption and an increase of manganese concentration in the solution were obtained by introducing secondary leaching tests with the previously roasted ore; this additional step was introduced without a significant decrease of global manganese extraction yield. Finally, toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) tests carried out on the leaching solid waste showed: (i) a reduction of arsenic mobility in the presence of iron precipitates, and (ii) the need for a washing step in order to produce a waste that is classifiable as not dangerous, taking into consideration the existing Environmental National Laws.  相似文献

Bottom ash is the main solid residue (in weight) which is produced by municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) facilities. This material is composed of a mineral matrix and may be used as secondary raw material for construction purpose. However, for this specific application the leaching behavior of the environmentally relevant elements under field conditions is different from the predicted behavior based on results obtained from the standardized leaching test. Therefore, a 70-day simulative experiment has been carried out in this study to investigate the release of major heavy metals (Cu and Pb) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from several particle fractions of bottom ash under a static leaching condition, where bottom ash was immersed in water at different initial pH values. Results showed that: (1) the leaching behavior of Cu and Pb was much similar with that depicted by the standardized leaching tests, and fit well with the solubility-controlling mechanism; (2) the sorption mechanism on the neoformed phases may control the solubility of Pb, whereas the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) may play an important role in the solubility of Cu; and (3) the leached PAHs were degraded during the later period of leaching process.  相似文献

The aim of the present work was to study if municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) residues and aggregates derived from contaminated soil washing could be used as alternative aggregates for concrete production.Initially, chemical, physical and geometric characteristics (according to UNI EN 12620) of municipal solid waste incineration bottom ashes and some contaminated soils were evaluated; moreover, the pollutants release was evaluated by means of leaching tests. The results showed that the reuse of pre-treated MSWI bottom ash and washed soil is possible, either from technical or environmental point of view, while it is not possible for the raw wastes. Then, the natural aggregate was partially and totally replaced with these recycled aggregates for the production of concrete mixtures that were characterized by conventional mechanical and leaching tests. Good results were obtained using the same dosage of a high resistance cement (42.5R calcareous Portland cement instead of 32.5R); the concrete mixture containing 400 kg/m3 of washed bottom ash and high resistance cement was classified as structural concrete (C25/30 class). Regarding the pollutants leaching, all concrete mixtures respected the limit values according to the Italian regulation.  相似文献

Two types of leaching tests were performed on the bottom ash from municipal solid waste incinerators. A short-term batch test specified by the America Nuclear Society (ANS) and long-term column tests with acetic acid (pH 5.2) as leaching solution were used to evaluate copper leachability. The Cu leaching after the 5-d ANS test is about 1% of the original Cu content of 5300 mg/kg. Upon addition of a stabilizing agent, the Cu leaching quantity is reduced; the extent of reduction depends on the type of chemical used (phosphate, carbonate and sulfide). The 1.6% Na(2)S addition showed negligible Cu leaching, and Na(2)S was, therefore, used in subsequent column tests. The 30-d column test indicates a steady increase of Cu leaching amount with time and reaches about 1.5% of the original Cu content after 30 d. A 180-d column test further increased the Cu leaching to about 5.1% of the original Cu content, whereas no appreciable Cu leaching was found with the addition of 1.6% Na(2)S. A sequential extraction was conducted on the raw ash, ash with the addition of Na(2)S and the residue ash after 30 d of operation to characterize Cu affinity for different solid fractions. The data were used to evaluate the fate of Cu through these interactions.  相似文献

The application of cement-based stabilisation/solidification treatment to organic-containing wastes is made difficult by the adverse effect of organics on cement hydration. The use of organophilic clays as pre-solidification adsorbents of the organic compounds can reduce this problem because of the high adsorption power of these clays and their compatibility with the cementitious matrix. This work presents an investigation of the effect on hydration kinetics, physico-mechanical properties and leaching behaviour of cement-based solidified waste forms containing 2-chlorophenol and 1-chloronapthalene adsorbed on organophilic bentonites. These were prepared by cation exchange with benzyldimethyloctadecylammonium chloride and trimethyloctadecylammonium chloride. The binder was a 30% pozzolanic cement, 70% granulated blast furnace slag mixture. Several binder-to-bentonite ratios and different concentrations of the organics on the bentonite were used. Kinetics of hydration were studied by measurement of chemically bound water and by means of thermal and calorimetric analyses. Microstructure and other physico-mechanical properties of the solidified forms were studied by means of mercury intrusion porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy and unconfined compressive strength measurement. Leaching was checked by two different leaching tests: one dynamic, on monolithic samples, and the other static, on powdered samples. This study indicates that the incorporation of the organic-loaded bentonite in the binder matrix causes modifications in the hardened samples by altering cement hydration. The effects of the two organic contaminants are differentiated.  相似文献

In Japan the volume of municipal solid waste is reduced by incineration, with fly ash and bottom ash disposed in controlled landfills. The leachability of anions and heavy metal cations, Zn, Cu and Pb, from MSW fly ash and bottom ash at different pHs was examined using batch- and column-leaching tests. The MSW ashes had a high capacity for neutralizing acids. Behaviour during leaching depended on the pH of the solution. For the volumes applied, the leachabilities of MSW fly ash were very similar at pHs from 3 to 6. Due to its amphoteric nature, Pb is leachable at pHs of approximately 10 or more, with leachate concentrations of about 3 and 3-10mg/L for the fly ash and bottom ash, respectively, much higher than for Zn and Cu. Pb concentrations for most leaching solutions were 1 and 3mg/L for the fly ash and bottom ash, respectively. Zn, and Cu leached at low concentrations for solutions of pH 3-6. Na and K ions leached at high concentrations of approximately 5000 mg/L in the first batch leaching test, decreasing to 10mg/L by the fourth leach. Ca and Mg ions leached more gradually than Na and K. Cl(-) and SO(4)(2+) ions were the major anions in the MSW ash. The high pH and cation leaching are expected to have negative impacts on the performance of clay liners.  相似文献

Fly- and scrubber-ash (weight ratio of approximately 1:3) from municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWI) are a major land-fill disposal problem due to their leaching of heavy metals. We uniformly mixed both types of ash with optimal amounts of waste glass frit, which was then melted into a glassy slag. The glassy slag was then pulverized to a particle size smaller than 38 μm for use as a cement substitute (20–40% of total cement) and blended with sand and cement to produce slag-blended cement-mortar (SCM) specimens. The toxicity characteristics of the leaching procedure tests on the pulverized slag samples revealed that the amount of leached heavy metals was far below regulatory thresholds. The compressive strength of the 28-day cured SCM specimens was comparable to that of ordinary Portland cement mortars, while the compressive strength of specimens cured for 60 or 90 days were 3–11% greater. The observed enhanced strength is achieved by Pozzolanic reaction. Preliminary evaluation shows that the combination of MSWI fly- and scrubber-ash with waste glass yields a cost effective and environmentally friendly cement replacement in cement-mortars.  相似文献

Environmental impact of ferrochrome slag in road construction   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Vargon Alloys in Western Sweden is one of the largest producers of ferrochrome slag in Europe. Ferrochrome slag is a by-product from the production of ferrochrome, an essential component in stainless steel. Extensive tests have been carried out on the physical properties of the ferrochrome slag from Vargon Alloys and it was found to be highly suitable as road construction material. The composition and leaching tests of the ferrochrome slag show that the chromium content is high, 1-3%, although leaching under normal conditions is very low. With the exception of potassium (K), which had a potential leaching capacity (availability test) of around 16%, the leaching of chromium, nickel, zinc and other elements was just a few per cent. However, all these tests were conducted in the laboratory. What happens out in the field, under the influence of acid rain and biological activity, and how does this compare with the laboratory results? To answer this question an investigation was carried out to study the environmental impact of ferrochrome slag in roads that were built in 1994. The investigation includes soil sampling (total content and leachable amounts of metals) and groundwater analysis (filtered and non-filtered samples). In addition, a new method involving the bio-uptake of chromium and other metals by the roots of the dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) was tested. The results show that there was a low migration of particles from the slag to the underlying soil and that the leaching into the groundwater was also low for all the elements analysed. However, there seemed to be a significant uptake of Cr by plants growing with their roots in the slag. An investigation of plant uptake was an important complement to laboratory leaching tests on alternative materials.  相似文献

Cement was used to solidify/stabilize the abandoned mine tailings contaminated primarily with arsenic (up to 88 mg/kg) and lead (up to 35 mg/kg). Solidified/stabilized (s/s) forms with a range of cement contents, 5–30 wt%, were evaluated to determine the optimal binder content. Unconfined compression strength test (UCS), Korean standard leaching tests, toxicity characteristic leaching procedures (TCLP), and synthetic precipitation leaching procedure (SPLP) were used for physical and chemical characterization of the s/s forms. Addition of 5% cement was enough for the s/s forms to satisfy the UCS requirements (0.35 MPa). The addition of 7.5% cement remarkably reduced the leachability of arsenic in tailings. However, that of lead tends to increase slightly with increase of cement content due to its amphoteric nature. The discussions were made for determination of optimal binder content and for results from different evaluation procedures.  相似文献
