Distribution of marine cladocerans in the Indian Ocean   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Cladocera of the Indian Ocean have been studied, on the basis of samples collected during the International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE). Out of a total of 1927 samples, 552 contained Cladocera. Although the distribution of this group is mainly coastal, one species, Evadne tergestina, has been found in oceanic waters also, where it may establish seasonal populations. Evadne spinifera was recorded off the Australian and South African coasts in the southern hemisphere, and in the Northeastern part of the Arabian Sea coastal waters in the northern hemisphere. Podon polyphemoides was reported from a single station in South African waters. Penilia avirostris was found in coastal waters throughout the Indian Ocean. Short-term distribution patterns of E. tergestina and P. avirostris are discussed. The possible value of this group as food for pelagic fishes has been indicated. Surface “swarms” of the swimming crabs Charybdis smithii are still considered as an unusual phenomenon in the open Indian Ocean, although their dense pelagic aggregations were already reported in waters off the Indian coast and in the northern Arabian Sea. Based on an extensive large-scale data series taken over 45 years, we demonstrate that C. smithii is common in the pelagic provinces of the western Indian Ocean driven by the wind monsoon regime. Swimming crabs are dispersed by the monsoon currents throughout the equatorial Indian Ocean. They aggregate at night in the upper 150-m layer, where their estimated biomass derived from pelagic trawling data can exceed 130 kg km−2. Abundance of C. smithii can reach >15,000 ind. km−2 in July (i.e. the peak of the south-west monsoon), declines by 50-fold in March and is negligible in May. C. smithii is an important prey for more than 30 species of abundant epipelagic top predators. In turn, it feeds on mesopelagic species. This swimming crab is a major species of the intermediate trophic levels and represents a crucial seasonal trophic link in the open ocean ecosystem of the western Indian Ocean. Outbursts in pelagic waters of huge biomasses of ordinarily benthic crustaceans (C. smithii and Natosquilla investigatoris) are a remarkable feature of the Indian Ocean, although similar, but smaller, events are reported in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

We examined the population structure of the black tiger prawn, Penaeus monodon Fabricius, 1798, in the Indo-West Pacific by analyzing the geographic distribution of elongation factor 1-alpha intron sequences from specimens collected during the winter and spring of 1997. Both the molecular phylogeny of alleles and F-statistics indicated very strong differentiation between populations from the western Indian Ocean and western Pacific. This pattern is concordant with other recent studies of marine species in this region, implying that the Indo-Australian Archipelago represents a biogeographic break between populations in the Indo-West Pacific. F ST-values among populations in the western Indian Ocean also indicate structure within this region, whereas no structure was found among western Pacific populations. Nucleotide diversity was significantly lower in the western Indian Ocean populations than in the western Pacific, implying that the populations have regional differences in demographic history. Published and unpublished records of euphausiid distributions around southern Africa are examined for zoogeographic pattern and the results compared with patterns generated from intertidal data sets. Two basic groups of euphausiids are discerned from cluster analysis, corresponding to neritic and oceanic assemblages. Superimposed upon these are Indian Ocean (Agulhas Current) and Atlantic Ocean (Benguela Current) groups. Patterns of diversity and zoogeography generally conform to the large-scale hydrological features in the area. Diversity is higher in the oceanic than in neritic regions. Maximum diversity is recorded off Cape Point, where Indian, Atlantic and southern Ocean waters interact. Diversity is otherwise higher along the east coast, and particularly low in the nearshore waters of the Benguela Current. While particular species of euphausiids can be associated with Agulhas Current and Angola Current waters, westcoast communities lack any distinctive species, and this is discussed. Although the patterns of zoogeography observed for euphausiids are generally similar to those observed for rocky shore communities, there are clear differences between them that reflect their respective habitats and the influence that large-scale water movement has on each.  相似文献

The distributional features and physical characteristics of 4830 krill (Euphausia superba Dana) aggregations detected acoustically in the Southwest Atlantic between 26 January and 21 February 1981 are described. Results are compared with aggregations detected in the Indian Ocean. Aggregations in the Atlantic were larger, closer to the surface and to each other than in the Indian Ocean. Similar patterns in the distribution of aggregation spacing along survey transects were found in the two areas, although the pattern of spacings in the Atlantic indicates differences in the scale of aggregation. Serial interdependence of aggregation variables was minimal in the Atlantic, with aggregation thickness, length and spacing showing weak inter-relationships. Weak functional association, between water depth and aggregation thickness was evident. Investigation of variability in aggregation structure in relation to prevailing environmental conditions gave equivocal results and no clear association between any aggregation variable and prevailing hydrography was observed. The implications of these results for future studies on krill aggregation are discussed in relation to a conceptual framework which was developed from the present results and aimed at linking krill aggregation characteristics to environmental features.  相似文献

There are numerous small populated islands near western Sumatra in Indonesia. The Weh, Banyak, Mentawai, and Enggano islands are home to many Indonesians. These small islands have been found to be effective at reducing tsunami wave energy on several occasions. At the same time, they are situated around Sumatras active subduction zone and are often among the areas most affected by tsunamisas in the case of Pulo Raya Island, in the western Aceh Jaya district about 800 m from Sumatra. Pulo Raya was devastated by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. This study investigates the hydrodynamic processes of reflected tsunami waves and their impact on Pulo Raya, using a Cornell Multi-grid COupled Tsunami (COMCOT) model to simulate the tsunami wave runup and subsequent hydrodynamic processes. The simulation confirms eyewitness accounts that it was not the initial runup, but the reflected waves that devastated the worst-hit areas of the island. As a result, we can recommend that governments and communities on small islands need to anticipate the impacts of reflected waves following a tsunami, especially at lee side of of the island that was perceived to be a safer place by the island community before the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.  相似文献

Relatively few insects have invaded the marine environment, and only five species of sea skaters, Halobates Eschscholtz (Hemiptera: Gerridae), have successfully colonized the surface of the open ocean. All five species occur in the Pacific Ocean, H. germanus White also occurs in the Indian Ocean, whereas H. micans Esch- scholtz is the only species found in the Atlantic Ocean. We sequenced a 780 bp long region of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene (COI) for a total of 66 specimens of the five oceanic Halobates species. Our purpose was to investigate the genetic variation within species and estimate the amount of gene flow between populations. We defined 27 haplotypes for H. micans and found that haplotype lineages from each of the major oceans occupied by this species are significantly different, having sequences containing five to seven unique base substitutions. We conclude that gene flow between populations of H. micans inhabiting the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Ocean is limited and hypothesize that these populations have been separated for 1 to 3 million years. Similarly, there may be limited gene flow between H. germanus populations found in the Pacific and Indian Ocean and between H. sericeus populations inhabiting the northern and southern parts of the Pacific Ocean. Finally, we discuss our findings in relation to recent hypotheses about the influence of oceanic diffusion on the distribution and population structure of oceanic Halobates spp. Received: 29 July 1999 / Accepted: 23 November 1999  相似文献

When sightings of seabirds in the Indian Ocean are analyzed in conjunction with oceanographic data, the distributions of certain species and higher taxa show significant correlation with the temperature and salinity of the surface waters. Closely related species occur preferentially over different types of surface water. Characteristic associations of species were also found corresponding to surface water-types. Seabirds are not exempted by their mobility from the constraints of the marine environment.  相似文献

While our understanding of the early oceanic developmental stage of sea turtles has improved markedly over recent decades, the spatial context for this life history stage remains unknown for Indian Ocean loggerhead turtle populations. To address this gap in our knowledge, 18 juvenile loggerheads were satellite tracked from Reunion Island (21.2°S, 55.3°E) between 2007 and 2011. Nine turtles swam north toward Oman (20.5°N, 58.8°E), where one of the world’s largest rookeries of loggerheads is located. Three individuals traveled south toward South Africa and Madagascar, countries that also host loggerhead nesting grounds. Fourteen of the transmitters relayed diving profiles. A dichotomy between diurnal and nocturnal diving behavior was observed with a larger number of shorter dives occurring during the day. Diving behavior also differed according to movement behavior as individuals spent more time in subsurface waters (between 10 and 20 m) during transit phases. The study provides an understanding of the oceanic movement behavior of juvenile loggerheads in the Indian Ocean that suggests the existence of an atypical trans-equatorial developmental cycle for the species at the ocean basin scale in the Indian Ocean. These results address a significant gap in the understanding of loggerhead oceanic movements and may help with the conservation of the species.  相似文献

Appendicularians from 76 hauls made from June to August 1964 in the Bay of Bengal, aboard the R. V. “Kistna”, have been examined. Of the 26 species determined, 10 are new for the Bay of Bengal and, amongst these, 2 were unknown in the Indian Ocean. The composition of the group formed by the most abundant and most frequent species is characteristic of the fauna of the Indian Ocean. Oikopleura longicauda represents 50% of the total number of individuals collected, followed by O. rujescens 14%, Megalocerus huxleyi 8%, O. fusiformis and Fritillaria borealis f. sargassi 6%, O. cophocerca and Stegosoma magnum 2%. No other species reached 1%. The density of the species in the occidental zone deereased fairly regularly with latitude: 21 species in the south, then going on towards the north, 14, 11 and 2. In the area south of the strait of Malacca only 5 species were found, in its opening into the Bay of Bengal, 18. The Oikopleuridae were present in all the hauls, but the Fritillaridae were absent from 25. The geographical distribution of each species has been studied. Oikopleura longicauda is the only one which is clearly more abundant in the north; most of the other species show a decreasing gradient from south to north. The characteristic difference between the different zones cannot be established from the hydrological data (temperature and salinity). It seems, therefore, that the indigenous species are not very common, and that others originate from the Indian Ocean, transported by the south-north currents present at that time of year.  相似文献

Genetic structure and connectivity of populations of the globally distributed and eurybathic sea star Hippasteria phrygiana (Parelius 1768) were studied in 165 individuals sampled from three oceanic regions: the North Pacific Ocean, the South Pacific Ocean (considered to include the adjacent regions of the Southern Ocean and the southern Indian Ocean) and the North Atlantic Ocean. A nuclear gene region (ATP synthase subunit α intron #5, ATPSα) and a mitochondrial gene region (cytochrome oxidase subunit I, COI) were amplified and sequenced. Significant heterogeneity was detected in an AMOVA analysis among the three sampled oceanic regions for COI, but not for ATPSα. Neither gene showed significant genetic heterogeneity within the North Atlantic, as assessed by ΦST values. Significant heterogeneity was detected for COI (but not ATPSα) in the North Pacific, but the converse was true in the South Pacific. Coalescent simulations suggested that the three regions have been diverging with little or no gene flow for the past 50–75,000 years, a time frame that corresponds to the onset of the last glacial period of the Pleistocene. A possible genetic signature of recent population expansion (or non-neutrality) was detected for each gene in the North Pacific, but not in the other two oceanic regions.  相似文献

The genetic structure of Patagonian toothfish populations in the Atlantic and western Indian Ocean Sectors of the Southern Ocean (SO) were analysed using partial sequences of the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene and seven microsatellite loci. Both haplotype frequency data (F ST>0.906, P<0.01) and microsatellite genotype frequency data (F ST=0.0141–0.0338, P<0.05) indicated that populations of toothfish from around the Falkland Islands were genetically distinct from those at South Georgia (eastern Atlantic Sector SO), around Bouvet Island (western Atlantic Sector SO) and the Ob Seamount (western Indian Ocean Sector of the SO). Genetic differentiation between these populations is thought to result from hydrographic isolation, as the sites are separated by two, full-depth, ocean-fronts and topographic isolation, as samples are separated by deep water. The South Georgia, Bouvet and Ob Seamount samples were characterised by an identical haplotype. However, microsatellite genotype frequencies showed genetic differentiation between South Georgia samples and those obtained from around Bouvet Island and nearby seamounts (F ST=0.0037, P<0.05). These areas are separated by large geographic distance and water in excess of 3,000 m deep, below the distributional range of toothfish (<2,200 m). No significant genetic differentiation was detected between samples around Bouvet Island and the Ob Seamount although comparisons may have been influenced by low sample size. These localities are linked by topographic features, including both ridges and seamounts, that may act as oceanic “stepping stones” for migration between these populations. As for other species of deep-sea fish, Patagonian toothfish populations are genetically structured at the regional and sub-regional scales.  相似文献

A numerical simulation of the 26th December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands case study is presented. The simulation approach is based on a fully nonlinear Boussinesq tsunami propagation model and included an accurate computational domain and a robust coseismic source. The simulation is first confronted to available tide gauge and run-up observations. The agreement between observations and the predicted wave heights allowed a reasonable validation of the simulation. As a result a full picture of the tsunami impact is provided over the entire coastal zone of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The processes responsible for coastal vulnerability are discussed.  相似文献

Studies on genetic connectivity are essential for the design of management strategies for coral reef fisheries. In this study we used a mitochondrial DNA marker to investigate population structure of the reef-associated parrotfish, Scarus ghobban, from four countries, Kenya, Mauritius, Seychelles and Tanzania, in the western Indian Ocean. We obtained nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial control region for 117 individuals. Measures of haplotype diversity were relatively high. Pairwise population differentiation (F ST) was low, but not always non-significant. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) showed genetic differentiation between groups, when the data was partitioned into two groups consisting of samples from Mauritius and Tanzania in one group, and samples from Kenya and Seychelles in another group. Direction of gene flow was estimated using a Bayesian approach. Migration was sometimes asymmetric or directional, coinciding with the flow of major oceanic and coastal currents in the region. Mismatch distributions, based on the observed number of differences among haplotype pairs, produced a unimodal distribution, indicative of recent demographic expansion. Phylogenetic analyses revealed three clades without any geographic structure, suggesting recent migration between historically isolated lineages. We reconstructed the historical demography of S. ghobban and examined it in the context of Pleistocene climate stages and changes in relative sea level. Overall, these results showed that populations of S. ghobban are genetically diverse and have relatively high gene flow, with some genetic structuring in the western Indian Ocean.  相似文献

Nesting populations of leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) in the Atlantic and western Indian Oceans are increasing or stable while those in the Pacific are declining. It has been suggested that leatherbacks in the eastern Pacific may be resource limited due to environmental variability derived from the El Ni?o Southern Oscillation (ENSO), but this has yet to be tested. Here we explored bottom-up forcing and the responding reproductive output of nesting leatherbacks worldwide. We achieved this through an extensive review of leatherback nesting and migration data and by analyzing the spatial, temporal, and quantitative nature of resources as indicated by net primary production at post-nesting female migration and foraging areas. Leatherbacks in the eastern Pacific were the smallest in body size and had the lowest reproductive output due to less productive and inconsistent resources within their migration and foraging areas. This derived from natural interannual and multidecadal climate variability together with an influence of anthropogenic climate warming that is possibly affecting these natural cycles. The reproductive output of leatherbacks in the Atlantic and western Indian Oceans was nearly twice that of turtles in the eastern Pacific. The inconsistent nature of the Pacific Ocean may also render western Pacific leatherbacks susceptible to a more variable reproductive output; however, it appears that egg harvesting on nesting beaches is their major threat. We suggest that the eastern Pacific leatherback population is more sensitive to anthropogenic mortality due to recruitment rates that are lower and more variable, thus accounting for much of the population differences compared to Atlantic and western Indian turtles.  相似文献

The Indo-Pacific leptomedusa Eirene elliceana (Agassiz and Mayer, 1902) is known to produce blastostyles budded from the gonads of the adult medusa. Three specimens out of 5, taken during the International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE) in the Bay of Bengal, showed medusa buds growing on young gonads whose sex could not be determined. Eighteen species of Candaciidae have been identified from collections made at 339 stations in the Indian Ocean. Most species are zonally distributed; however, on the eastern and western sides of the Indian Ocean, species ranges are extended north or south by boundary currents. Factor analysis was used to cluster phenotypically similar species based on 130 characters taken from the maxilla (a feeding appendage), the first swimming foot, and the fifth foot (a secondary sexual structure). Four morphological clusters were extracted. Clusterings based on separate factor analyses limited to characters from feeding or from sexually adapted appendages are in substantial agreement with the clusters based on composite morphology. Two geographically recurrent groups of species were also identified, one from equatorial waters, one from the central gyre. Each recurrent group is composed of species exceptionally different in body size and belonging to different morphological clusters. Niches of the species are compared using Hutchinson's multidimensional hypervolume as a model. An attempt is made to describe the niche of each species in terms of environmental variables measured at stations where the species was abundant. Environmental variables (dimensions) included in this study are space, time, temperature, food, oxygen and salinity. Mean niche adaptations of most of the species are separable from congeners along at least one niche dimension. It is proposed that community relationships among the Candaciidae developed to prevent both gamete loss and to avoid trophic competition. It is postulated that newly evolving species underwent contemporaneous displacement of both secondary sexual and trophic characters as a condition for sympatry, or diverged in their physiological adaptations to escape sympatric interference.Contribution No. 3686 of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The tropical lancelet Asymmetron lucayanum (= Epigonichthys lucayanus) is distributed from the western Indian Ocean to the central Pacific Ocean, and the western Atlantic Ocean. Molecular phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences (1,035 bp) of A. lucayanum (80 specimens from seven localities) showed clearly that this species is genetically distinguished into three major groups of geographical populations based on neighbor-joining tree using maximum likelihood distance (HKY model with invariable sites and gamma correction), suggesting the existence of three cryptic species. Our genetic data show that (1) inter-oceanic divergence time between Clade B (the West-Central Pacific) and Clade C (the Atlantic) (d = 6.6%, ca. 12 million years ago) was smaller than intra-oceanic divergence time between Clade A (the Indo-West Pacific) and Clade B (d=39.5%, ca. 100 million years ago); (2) there are two cryptic species in the West Pacific in sympatry; and (3) high gene flow is implied between the Maldives and the Ryukyus in Clade A (10,000 km distance), the Philippines and Hawaii in Clade B (8,500 km distance), and Barbados and Bermuda in Clade C (2,200 km distance).  相似文献

The 26 December 2004 tsunamis around the Indian Ocean exposed the vulnerability of many coastal communities, including those serving tourists. To draw conclusions regarding disaster risk reduction for tourism in coastal areas, this study surveyed international tourists who survived the tsunami regarding their perceptions and experiences of the disaster. Semi-structured interviews were completed between January and June 2005 of 55 primary interviewees who were international tourists in locations affected by the tsunami. The qualitative data from the interviews yielded commonalities across four main themes with relevance to disaster risk reduction: information and awareness, warning systems, personal preparation, and livelihoods. Three areas are suggested as topics to highlight for further investigation: the connections between sustainable tourism and disaster vulnerability, the role of tourists in disasters, and disaster risk reduction education.  相似文献

The geographical distribution of marine invertebrate species — Annelida Polychaeta in the present case — is not random. It permits the definition of partially overlapping biogeographical groups. These groups are disposed in a line corresponding to a north-south axis. The seasonal cycles of occurrence of pelagic larvae are considered in southern Scandinavia (on the basis of literature sources), in the western Mediterranean Sea, and in the Indian Ocean (both on the basis of own data). The criterium of reproduction is the presence of meroplanktonic larvae of benthonic species. In this way, it has been possible to distinguish stocks of boreal, temperate and sub-tropical affinity. Within a given stock, the breeding season depends on the site of observation and on ecological factors. The breeding season is retarded for 6 months in southarn Scandinavia as compared to the western Mediterranean Sea, although these species belong to the same stock. This type of comparative study allows emphasis of the role of certain ecological factors related to reproduction (temperature, abundance of phytoplankton, etc.). Breeding may be triggered by different ecological factors, even in animals belonging to one and the same geographical stock: in the Mediterranean Sea, the breeding of the so-called subtropical species seems to be controlled by temperature (monthly variations); in the Indian Ocean, by high levels of phytoplankton abundance. A comparison of temperate species with those of southern Scandinavia and the Mediterranean Sea reveals differences in breeding seasons, which are correlated with thermal regime; breeding does not occur below or above a specific temperature, but is restricted to an optimum value, which appears to be a physiological species characteristic.  相似文献
