This study reports the vertical distribution of fish larvae during the 1999 summer upwelling season in the Canaries-African Coastal Transition Zone (the Canaries-ACTZ). The transition between the African coastal upwelling and the typical subtropical offshore conditions is a region of intense mesoscale activity that supports a larval fish population dominated by African neritic species. During the study, the thermal stratification extended almost to the surface everywhere, and the surface mixed layer was typically shallow or non-existent. Upwelling occurred on the African shelf in a limited coastal sub-area of our sampling. The vertical distributions of the entire larval fish population, as well as of individual species, were independent of the seasonal thermocline. Fish larvae and mesozooplankton were concentrated at intermediate depths regardless of the thermocline position, probably because of its weak signature and spatial and temporal variability. Day/night vertical distributions suggest that some species did not perform diel vertical migration (DVM), whereas others showed either type I DVM or type II DVM. The opposing DVM patterns of different species compensate for each other resulting in no net DVM for the larval fish population as a whole. 相似文献

Epifluorescence microscopy was used to analyze the stomach contents of bivalve larvae collected in the Baie des Chaleurs
(western Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada) in order to document food-particle sizes, compare feeding among taxa, and compare the
diet with the in situ phytoplankton community. Stomach contents were mainly composed of small autotrophic flagellates (<5
μm) and cyanobacteria (<2 μm), reflecting the microbial food web which characterizes these waters. More than half (55%) of
all veligers examined contained algal cells of 5 to 15 μm, whereas only 3% had cells of 15 to 25 μm. Differences in the size
ranges of ingested algal cells among similar-sized larvae of different species suggests that veligers actively selected food
particles. Among the smallest veligers (185 to 260 μm), scallops (Placopecten magellicanus) and mussels (Mytilus edulis) ingested more <5 μm and 5 to 15 μm algae than clams (Mya arenaria). Among larger veligers (261 to 405 μm), clams contained significantly more <5 μm cells than mussels, whereas mussels contained
significantly more 5 to 15 μm algae than clams. Algal cells of 15 to 25 μm were preferentially ingested by mussel veligers.
Feeding also differed between different-sized veligers within taxa, i.e. the smallest clam veligers ingested fewer of 5 to
15 μm algae than the larger size classes. Mussel veligers ingested significantly more 15 to 25 μm and fewer <5 μm cells as
their size increased. The dominance of ultraplankton in the nearshore waters of Baie des Chaleurs and in the stomach contents
suggests that veliger larvae may be an important export path for carbon produced by small phytoplankton.

Taxonomic identification and genetic analysis of larval marine invertebrates have been vexing problems. We describe a polyacrylamide mini-gel electrophoresis technique for resolving proteins from individual larval bivalves (shell length 250 to 350 m) and apply this technique to three species of laboratory-cultured larval oysters [Ostrea edulis L., 1758, Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg, 1793) and c. virginica (Gmelin, 1791)] reared during summer 1989. Electrophoretic patterns of proteins clearly discriminate among the three species and allow genetic analysis of a polymorphic allozyme locus (Pgi) in field-collected larvae and juveniles of C. virginica. This technique provides an economical tool for largescale taxonomic, ecologic, and genetic studies of meroplanktonic stages of various species. 相似文献

We examined the inheritance of theMytilus edulis CaM-1 Intron 3 locus, a non-coding DNA locus with two potentially neutral length-variants. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to determine theCaM-1 genotype for 799 larvae obtained from 11 laboratory crosses. Larvae were typed singly only 8 to 24 h after fertilization. We find evidence that each allele can be inherited from either sex, that there are no barriers to fertilization between gametes of different genotypes, and that most larvae have genotypes compatible with Mendelian inheritance of the locus. Deviations from expected genotype frequencies were found in some crosses; we suggest that a contributing factor is aneuploidy in early larvae, but a major cause is more likely to be selection at a locus linked toCaM-1, occurring under the artificial laboratory culture conditions. This study demonstrates the feasibility of applying molecular genetic techniques to early larval stages of marine bivalves, and presents a new non-destructive biopsy method for DNA analysis from living adult mussels. 相似文献

In a study of the toxicity of mercury, silver, copper, nickel, and zinc to larvae of the American oyster Crassostrea virginica and hard clam Mercenaria mercenaria, the concentrations at which 5% (LC5), 50% (LC50), and 95% (LC95) of the larvae died were determined, as well as growth at the LC5 and LC50 values. The order of toxicity for oyster larvae was Hg>Ag>Cu>Ni, and for clam larvae Hg>Cu>Ag>Zn>Ni. Growth of larvae of both species, with the exception of clam larvae in nickel-treated water, was not reduced at the LC5 values, but was markedly reduced at the LC50 values. 相似文献

The distribution of prokaryotic and eukaryotic picoplankton in the west coast upwelling-region off the South Island of New Zealand was investigated during midwinter (1988) the time of year when several commercially important fish species migrate into the region to breed. Picoplanktonic cells were major contributors to the autotrophic biomass, with > 80% of the particulate nitrogen and 39 to 55% of the total chlorophylla contained in the <2µm size-fraction. The prokaryotic picoplankton concentrations ranged from 6.3 × 105 to 2.1 × 107 cell l–1, and the eukaryotic picoplankton between 3.9 × 105 to 1.2 × 107 cells l–1. Picoplankton numbers increased with distance offshore to a maximum of ~ 3.0 × 107 cells l–1 at ~ 35 km from the coast, and then diminished towards the outer shelf and open ocean. The ratio of prokaryotic to eukaryotic cells varied between 1.01 and 4.71 in the mixed layer. Both groups declined substantially beneath the pycnocline, with no evidence of deep maxima. Prokaryotic cells dominated the planktonic cell concentrations at all but two stations, but eukaryotic cells dominated picoplankton biovolume as a result of their larger average cell size. The prokaryotic to eukaryotic picoplankton cell-number ratios in this system were considerably lower than often recorded elsewhere, and were inversely correlated with nitrate concentration. These observations show that a eukaryoticdominated picoplankton community makes a substantial contribution to autotrophic biomass in this nutrient-rich upwelling system, and may thereby play a major role in the food-web dynamics of this coastal fishery. 相似文献

An interdisciplinary research program (Kombiniertes Oberflächenfilmprojekt KOFF), in the North Sea area about 75 km west of the Island of Sylt, is directed towards gaining further knowledge on the biological importance of the natural surface film. The investigations include the water body below the film as well as dynamic processes at the surface. Persistence of calm weather conditions (cloudless sky) before and during the investigations permitted observations of the diurnal species-specific vertical migration of Dinophyceae. Two groups could be distinguished: (1) Prorocentrum micans and Ceratium furca; (2) C. horridum, C. macroceros and C. fusus. The active accumulation of P. micans in the slick was verified by a significant correlation coefficient—linearly correlated with the time of day. To investigate the natural defenses of Antarctic marine organisms against exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation (280 to 320 nm), 57 species (1 fish, 48 invertebrates, and 8 algae) were collected during austral spring 1988 in the vicinity of Palmer Station (Anvers Island, Antarctic Peninsula) and were analyzed for the presence of mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), compounds that absorb UV radiation and may provide shielding from these biologically hazardous wavelengths. Nearly 90% of the 57 species examined contained MAAs, and eight specific MAA compounds were identified. Seven of these (palythine, porphyra-334, shinorine, mycosporineglycine, palythene, asterina-330, and palythinol) have been observed previously in marine organisms from temperate and tropical latitudes. A new MAA, mycosporineglycine: valine, was found in the Antarctic fish and in 38 of the invertebrate species examined. This study confirms widespread occurrence of MAAs in Antarctic marine organisms and suggests that these species have some degree of natural biochemical protection from UV exposure.Contribution No. 502 from the Australian Institute of Marine Science 相似文献

The vertical distribution of the eggs and larvae of the European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) in the western Mediterranean Sea in June 1984 and Agust 1985 was analyzed based on multiple plankton tows carried out at varying depths and using nets equipped with opening and closing mechanisms. Hydrographic parameters such as temperature, salinity, and chlorophylla were recorded simultaneously. Maximum abundance of anchovy eggs and larvae always occurred above the thermocline, even when maximum chlorophylla concentrations were located below the thermocline. Larval distribution appeared to be associated with the availability of suitable food organisms. As in other clupeoid species, the anchovy larvae carried out vertical migrations related to the photoperiod. 相似文献

Larvae and adults of an Hawaiian bivalve, Isognomon californicum, were exposed to sublethal, environmentally realistic concentrations of cadmium (2 and 20 ppb) for 28 d, and the accumulation of cadmium was evaluated. The concentrations of cadmium were expressed in terms of total cadmium (tissue and shell concentrations combined) and tissue cadmium. The accumulation rates of larvae were one to two orders of magnitude greater than adult rates. This study suggests that the faster uptake rates of larvae may explain why larvae are more sensitive than adults. Furthermore, the magnitude of differences between larval and adult accumulation rates may be related to metabolic rate. When larvae and adults were exposed to cadmium for only 14 d, followed by a 14 d depuration period, a substantial loss of cadmium was observed during the depuration period. Possible accumulation mechanisms and their similarity between larvae and adults are discussed. 相似文献

The transport of marine invertebrate larvae is strongly influenced by their distribution in the water column, which could
be affected by the biological features of the larvae and environmental variables. Larvae can modify their swimming behavior
throughout their planktonic cycle, thereby changing the observed distributional patterns. This ability, coupled with oceanographic
features, could induce landward or seaward transport. We studied the vertical distribution of C. concholepas larval stages in two differently stratified systems in Chilean inland seas; Refugio Channel (a strongly stratified channel,
where previously has been described as a frontal system) and Guaitecas (a gently stratified system). Combinations of 12–24 h
larval collection experiments were done simultaneously with fixed temperature and salinity profiles; meteorological data were
also obtained. The results suggest that both salinity and day period influence the C. concholepas distributional patterns in the water column. Early veliger and competent larvae are concentrated in different parts of the
water column, probably related to their transport capacities. The upper layer of the water column at the Refugio site, unlike
the Guaitecas site, showed a stratified regime, which could affect larval density and larval length between the two sites.
Finally, our results suggest that Refugio may be a sink habitat for C. concholepas. 相似文献

Effects of a decrease in downwelling irradiance on the daytime vertical distribution patterns of zooplankton and micronekton 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The daytime vertical distribution of several species of crustaceans, gelatinous zooplankton, and fish were monitored in situ simultaneously with measurements of downwelling irradiance in Oceanographer Canyon in July 1999. During this submersible-based research cruise, an influx of turbid water significantly decreased downwelling irradiance and had a substantial impact on the depth distributions of a number of organisms. Several species of crustaceans, (Thysanoessa gregaria and Sergestes arcticus) and gelatinous zooplankton (Salpa aspera and Salpa fusiformis) ascended over 100 m in the water column during the influx and returned to their pre-influx depths once the influx had ceased. In situ light measurements demonstrated that each of these species was associated with the same irradiance levels during the influx as they were under pre- and post-influx conditions. By contrast, a statistically significant change in temperature, salinity, and oxygen concentrations measured post-influx had no apparent impact on the depth distributions. These results indicate that these species were adjusting their depth distributions to remain within a range of preferred irradiances. Consistent patterns of horizontal distribution of fish larvae from plankton tows were found in shallow waters around Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef during 1979 and 1980. Few types of larvae were most abundant in Lizard Lagoon, and none of these were old larvae. Forty percent of the 57 types of larvae studied differed in abundance between windward and downwind sides of the island. More types of old larvae were found in greatest abundance off the windward side of the island than the downwind side. Most types of larvae preferred deeper water (>3 m) during the day and moved upward at night, although a few types preferred upper (<3 m) or middle portions of the water column. These latter were more likely to descend at night or to maintain their day-time distribution than to move upward. Windward larvae [those more abundant off the windward (SE) side of the island] were more shallow-living than were downwind larvae, and were more likely to maintain their day-time distribution at night. The current patterns around Lizard Island were favourable for retention of larvae in both Lizard Lagoon and off the windward side of the island, if combined with certain vertical distributions of the larvae. However, while there was evidence for retention on the windward side of the island, there was no evidence for retention in Lizard Lagoon. Currents on the downwind side of the island were not favourable for retention of larvae and there was little evidence that larvae were retained there. Retention may be an accidental result of interaction between currents and larval behaviour, or the result of a strategy of retention by the larvae. Tropical organisms colonizing temperate environments face reduced average temperatures and dramatic thermal fluctuations. Theoretical models postulate that thermal specialization should be favored either when little environmental variation is experienced within generations or when among-generation variation is small relative to within-generation variation. To test these predictions, we studied six temperate species of damselflies differing in latitudinal distribution. We developed a computer model simulating how organisms experience environmental variation (accounting for diapause and voltinism) and performed a laboratory experiment assaying thermal sensitivities of growth rates. The computer model showed opposing latitudinal trends in among- and within-generation thermal variability: within-generation thermal variability decreased toward higher latitudes, whereas relative levels of among-generation thermal variability peaked at midlatitudes (where a shift in voltinism occurred). The growth experiment showed that low-latitude species were more thermally generalized than mid- and high-latitude species, supporting the prediction that generalists are favored under high levels of within-generation variation. Northern species had steeper, near-exponential reaction norms suggestive of thermal specialization. However, they had strikingly high thermal optima and grew very slowly over most of the thermal range they are expected to experience in the field. This observation is at present difficult to explain. These results highlight the importance of considering interactions between life history and environmental variation when deriving expectations of thermal adaptation. 相似文献

A mooring system consisting of an in situ fluorometer at a depth of 50 m and a time-series sediment trap at a depth of 110 m was deployed at the sediment trap site (70°11.536'S; 24°18.679'E; water depth: 300 m) in Breid Bay, Antarctica in austral summer from 28 December 1985 to 13 February 1986. Sinking particles, consisting of diatoms (mainly Thalassiosira antarctica), were analyzed for organic materials, stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes. Vertical fluxes of organic carbon and nitrogen were determined to be within the ranges of 12.3 to 116 mg C m-2 d-1 and 1.79 to 15.4 mg N m-2 d-1, respectively, with maxima in the middle of January 1986, after which time the organic carbon and nitrogen fluxes tended to decrease with a steep gradient. High values of 13C were found in the organic matter of the sinking particles collected before the middle of January, indicating that the organic matter was derived from the diatoms in the logarithmic phase of their growth. Increased abundance of glucose was found in the water-extractable carbohydrate, which was one of the sinking particles collected in the middle of January. This fact clearly indicated that the diatoms were no longer in the growth phase but rather in the stationary phase, because reserved glucan as well as various cellular organic materials were reportedly accumulated within the algal cells in the stationary phase. Fifteen species of protein amino acids with trace amounts of -alanine, -aminobutyric acid and ornithine were found in the sinking particles upon acid hydrolysis, but the amino acid composition of these samples had not been affected much by biological agents. The essential amino acid index was calculated for the sinking particles collected in the course of the sediment trap experiment. The indices obtained indicated that the sinking particles collected in Breid Bay were more ecologically significant than the sinking and suspended particles from deep waters. 相似文献

Upwelling effects of subsurface water on phytoplankton growth were evaluated by 9 simulated culture experiments of coastal upwelling. Particular attention was paid to the effects of nutrient enrichment on the surface phytoplankton by the upwelling of nutrient rich subsurface water and of the exposure of the subsurface phytoplankters to surface radiation. The following are the results obtained: the lag period of phytoplankton growth was inversely related to water temperature; the maximum yield of phytoplankton was proportional to the amounts of available initial nutrients; the specific growth rates of phytoplankton were a function of both the initial nutrient concentrations and water temperature; and the maximum specific growth rate was simply proportional to water temperature. According to the relations found, a simple equation is presented for the estimation of phytoplankton growth in a given upwelling. Succession of species in the phytoplankton assemblage in upwelled water mass was also taken into consideration. 相似文献

The hydrodynamics and nitrogen/silicon biogeochemistry accompanying the development of a red-tide assemblage were examined
in the Ría de Vigo (northwest Spain), a coastal embayment affected by upwelling, during an in situ diel experiment in September
1991. Despite a low N:Si molar ratio (0.5) of nutrients entering the surface layer, which was favourable for diatom growth,
the diatom population began to decline. Limited N-nutrient input, arising from moderate coastal upwelling in a stratified
water column, restricted net community production (NCP = 630 mg C m−2 d−1). In addition, light-limitation of gross primary production (GPP = 1525 mg C m−2 d−1) was observed. The relatively high f-ratio (= NCP:GPP) recorded (0.41, characteristic of intense upwelling conditions) would have been as low as 0.15 had not GPP
been limited by light intensity. Temporal separation of carbohydrate synthesis during the photoperiod from protein synthesis
in the dark could be inferred from the time-course of the C:N ratio of particulate organic matter. Severe light-limitation
would lead to diatom collapse were the diatoms not able to meet all their energy requirements during the hours of darkness.
Under the hydrodynamic, nutrient and light conditions of the experiment, an assemblage of red-tide-forming species began to
develop, aided by their ability to migrate vertically and to synthesize carbohydrates during the light in surface waters and
protein during the dark at the 4 m-deep pycnocline. Thermal stratification, reduced turbulence, intense nutrient mineralization,
and the limited nitrogen input through moderate upwelling were all favourable to the onset of a red-tide assemblage.

A static renewal test was run for 30 d to assess the effects of the antifoulant tributyltin (TBT, nominal concentrations of 50, 125, 250 and 500 ng Sn l-1) on the survival and growth of 240 m-long pediveliger larvae of the bivalve Scrobicularia plana (da Costa) settling in fine sand. Exposure to nominal TBT levels of 125 ng Sn l-1 (actual range of 37 to 102 ng Sn l-1, as analysed) resulted in substantial mortalities and negligible shell growth of individuals. More importantly, larval shell growth at the lowest concentration tested (i.e. nominal 50 ng Sn l-1 or 14 to 32 ng Sn l-1, as analysed) was significantly reduced (by a factor of 4) and grossly abnormal. In contrast, some control postlarvae had begun developing siphons as they attained a length of 600 to 700 m by the end of this test, thereby completing metamorphosis and becoming juveniles. The results are discussed in relation to the widespread disappearance of S. plana in North Atlantic European estuaries during the 1980s and the concurrent TBT pollution in their waters. It is inferred that TBT is likely to have contributed to the reported demise of clam populations by preventing the successful and timely progress of their pediveliger larvae. 相似文献

Vertical distributions and nocturnal migrations of the developmental stages of Nyctiphanes couchi (Bell) in relation to the summer thermocline in the Celtic Sea, 25 to 26 August 1982, have been investigated using the Longhurst-Hardy Plankton Recorder (LHPR). The vertical distributions of the metanauplii and adult females suggest that N. couchi liberates its young within the euphotic zone as mature metanauplii which, in a matter of hours, moult into the first feeding stage (Calyptopis I). The ascent migration by adult females took a maximum of 3 h (17.10 to 20.05 hrs) and had an amplitude of 50m (54 to 4 m) from below to above the thermocline. A 7C° thermocline occurred between 20 to 30 m in these profiles. The nocturnal migrations by the females were for the purpose of breeding as well as feeding within the euphotic zone and were not influenced by the presence of the thermocline. The majority of the calyptopes and furciliae remained above the thermocline over the sampling period. The post-larval males and females migrated; their vertical distributions showed a pattern similar to those of the adult females. The larger the developmental stage, the deeper was the mode of its vertical distribution. The zooplankton dry weight in the profiles ranged from 3.74 to 6.91 g per haul (=1.85 to 3.45 g C m-2, 0 to 100 m). The euphausiids represented 35% of total zooplankton dry weight and their migrations removed a large percentage of the total zooplankton biomass from the euphotic zone for 18 h d-1. Such a large displacement of biomass would have a major impact on the biological interactions within the ecosystem. 相似文献
