Influence of food concentration (0.5, 1 and 2 x 105 cell ml–1 ofSkeletonema costatum), temperature (20 and 30°C) and salinity (15, 25 and 35) on the larval development ofBalanus amphitrite (Cirripedia: Thoracica) was examined. The mortality rate at 20°C was lower than at 30°C in general. Increase in food concentration from 0.5 to 1 x 105 cells ml–1 improved the survival rate, but this was not evident when food concentration was increased to 2 x 105 cells ml–1. The results indicate that food availability and temperature jointly determine the energy allocation for metamorphic progress. It was observed that the influence of the tested variables varied with instar. At 20 °C the mean duration of the second instar exceeded 3 d and was much longer than other instar durations. The fourth, fifth and sixth instars and the total naupliar period showed that the effect of different salinities at given food concentrations was negligible at 20°C, while at 30°C there was a marked decrease in duration with increasing salinity.  相似文献

Films of bacteria on solid substrata can positively or negatively influence the attachment of marine invertebrate larvae. Effects of marine bacteria on the attachment of cypris larvae of the barnacle Balanus amphitrite Darwin were examined in the laboratory. Bacteria, grown to mid-exponential phase and allowed to adsorb irreversibly to polystyrene petri dishes, attached in densities of 107 cells cm-2. Assays (22h) were used to compare the effects of adsorbed cells of 18 different bacterial species on larval barnacle attachment. Most of the adsorbed bacteria either inhibited or had no effect on larval attachment compared to clean surfaces. Experiments testing the effect of larval age on barnacle attachment were conducted with six species of bacteria and showed that older larvae attached in higher percentages to clean surfaces and that bacterial films generally inhibited larval attaschment. Both the species of bacteria and the in situ age of the adsorbed bacteria affected barnacle attachment response: older films of Deleya (Pseudomonas) marina were more inhibitory. Bacterial extracellular materials may be involved in the inhibitory process.  相似文献

Many marine dispersive propagules select specific settlement sites based on a range of environmental cues. However, the link between larval choice and post-settlement growth and survival is still poorly understood. Here we show that cypris larvae of the barnacle Balanus improvisus actively reject surfaces exposed to local flow speeds exceeding 5-10 cm/s. Field experiments show that post-settlement growth and survival decline in freestream flows above 15 cm/s. Moreover, studies in flume flow at local speeds exceeding 10 cm/s reveal that early juveniles show reduced feeding rates caused by deformation of the cirral fan, reduced retention efficiency, and a decrease in time spent feeding. We conclude that cypris larvae actively reject flow environments that will be suboptimal for suspension feeding in the early post-settlement phase. Our study suggests that larval choice can be adaptively connected to a specific part of the life cycle, in this case the very sensitive time after metamorphosis.  相似文献

Competent cyprid larvae of the barnacle Balanus amphitrite Darwin were prevented from metamorphosing in the laboratory for 3 or 5 d using three different techniques (holding at low temperature, crowding, and detaining on a silanized surface). We then assessed the effects of prolonging larval life on post-metamorphic growth and survival, in comparison with control individuals that metamorphosed soon after they were competent to do so. Seven experiments were conducted over 2 yr (July 1987 to September 1989). In all experiments (each with six replicates per treatment), postponing larval metamorphosis for 3 or 5 d dramatically depressed postmetamorphic growth rate (P<0.05), although metamorphic success and post-metamorphic survival were not affected (P>0.10). The results suggest that B. amphitrite cyprids deferring their metamorphosis in the field may be less successful in competing for space, at least during the first few weeks of postlarval life.  相似文献

The variable duration of the pelagic phase of metamorphically competent larvae of benthic marine invertebrates is set by an interaction between environmental factors and larval traits that together influence the chance that a larva will encounter and respond to a suitable settlement site. In the Hawaiian aeolid nudibranch Phestilla sibogae Bergh, an extended competent larval phase resulted in a cascade of negative effects on larval and post-larval life-history traits. When raised as fed (i.e., facultatively planktotrophic) larvae, an extended larval period resulted in lower larval survival, slightly lower metamorphic success, and delayed reproduction. When raised as unfed (i.e., lecithotrophic) larvae, an extended larval period resulted in lower larval and post-larval weights, survival, metamorphic success, and reproductive output, and also resulted in a longer juvenile period and delayed reproduction. The chance nature of locating a settlement site generally spreads these negative effects over all larvae of a cohort, and so balances the relative fitness of the genetic lineages within a population.  相似文献

The energetic cost of metamorphosis in cyprids of the barnacle Balanus amphitrite Darwin was estimated by quantification of lipid, carbohydrate and protein contents. About 38–58% (4–5 mJ individual–1) of cypris energy reserves were used during metamorphosis. Lipids accounted for 55–65%, proteins for 34–44% and carbohydrates for <2% of the energy used. Juveniles obtained from larvae fed 106 cells ml–1 of Chaetoceros gracilis were bigger (carapace length: 560–616 µm) and contained more energy (5.56±0.10 mJ juvenile–1) than their counterparts (carapace length: 420–462 µm; energy content: 2.49±0.20 mJ juvenile–1) obtained from larvae fed 104 cells ml–1. At water temperatures of 30°C and 24°C and food concentrations of 104 and 102 cells ml–1 (3:1 mixture of C. gracilis and Isochrysis galbana) as well as under field conditions (26.9±3.1°C and 2.2±0.8 µg chlorophyll a l–1), juveniles obtained from larvae fed the high food concentration grew faster than juveniles obtained from larvae fed low food concentration until 5 days post-metamorphosis. Laboratory experiments revealed a combined effect of early juvenile energy content, temperature and food concentration on growth until 5 days post-metamorphosis. After 10 days post-metamorphosis, the influence of the early juvenile energy content on growth became negligible. Overall, our results indicate that the energy content at metamorphosis is of critical importance for initial growth of juvenile barnacles and emphasize the dependency of the physiological performance of early juvenile barnacles on the larval exposure to food.Communicated by O. This study evaluated whether larvae of the Indo-Pacific vermetid gastropod Dendropoma maximum are obligate planktotrophs, or whether they exhibit an intermediate feeding strategy. Experiments were conducted in Moorea, French Polynesia (149°50′W, 17°30′S), Sep–Oct 2009, to examine D. maximum larval growth and metamorphic responses to different diets and amounts of food. Dendropoma maximum larvae required particulate food to undergo metamorphosis, but were able to survive and grow in the absence of food for up to 20 days. Larvae in Low and Unfed food treatments exhibited phenotypic plasticity by growing a larger velum (the larval feeding structure) compared with those in high food. Unfed D. maximum larvae had a slower initial growth rate; however, by 11-day post-hatch fed and unfed larvae had converged on the same mean shell height (553 μm), which was only 10% larger than the initial size at hatching. Therefore, although the nutritional strategy of D. maximum larvae is best described as obligate planktotrophy, it appears to approach an intermediate feeding strategy.  相似文献

Capture success of the medusa Aurelia aurita preying on various developmental stages of fish larvae was measured together with larval reactivity and escape speed after being stung. These experiments were conducted in the spring of 1983 with A. aurita medusae collected from Loch Etive, Scotland and laboratory-reared larvae of Gadus morhua L., Platichthys flesus L., Pleuronectes platessa L. and Clupea harengus L. Capture success of the medusae increased with medusa size, but decreased with advancing larval development. Smaller species of larvae were more vulnerable to capture. Larval reactivity to encounters with medusae increased with advancing development, and larger species of larvae were more reactive to encounters. Larval escape swimming speeds also increased with advancing larval development and size. These results indicate that earlier stages of larvae within a species and smaller species of larvae at a given stage are more vulnerable to predation by medusae since they are less reactive to encounters. Apparently they are more susceptible to the effects of neurotoxins. Predation rates on different developmental stages of herring larvae are documented and compared with rates predicted by a predation model. Predictions fell within the range of observed predation rates, but tended to overestimate rates by larger medusae feeding on larger herring larvae. This indicates the possibility of predator satiation and/or behavioural avoidance.  相似文献

We studied the effect of a developing Skeletonema marinoi/Phaeocystis spp. bloom on Calanus finmarchicus hatching success, early naupliar survival and metabolism. Our focus was (1) on the development of reproductive rates during a bloom initiation, peak and decline in relation to the production of potentially toxic algal metabolites and (2) on the proportional importance of female nutrition versus naupliar food environment for the production of viable nauplii. Despite polyunsaturated aldehyde (PUA) production by both S. marinoi and Phaeocystis sp., we did not observe any harmful effects on hatching success or naupliar survival and condition in any stages of the short-term (<1 week) algal bloom. Hatching success appeared to be controlled by egg lipid composition, while the beneficial effect of a high food concentration was reflected in naupliar RNA:DNA ratio, protein content and total production of viable nauplii. The egg lipids reflected seston lipids, indicating that the egg fatty acid composition was not modified by the females. Our results suggest that unselective feeding and/or retention of specific lipids can induce qualitative food limitation, although recruitment during the S. marinoi/Phaeocystis sp. bloom was high.  相似文献

The shore crab Carcinus maenas was reared in the laboratory from egg deposition to sexual maturity. Special enclosures were developed for cultivation of the larvae. Food and temperature proved to be the most important exogenous factors for rearing success. Fresh Artemia salina nauplii were the only food suitable for all larval stages. The following rearing temperatures proved most successful during larval development: (1) embryonic development, 10°C; (2) zoea stages, 15°C; (3) megalopa stage, 17.5°C. Aquaculture studies have revealed that polyunsaturated fatty acids are critical for maintaining substantial growth, survival and reproductive rates, and high food conversion efficiencies for a wide variety of marine and freshwater organisms. The aim of this study was to investigate the gross biochemical and fatty acid composition of both neutral and polar lipid compartments of the razor clam Solen marginatus throughout embryonic and larval development. High levels of stored reserves in S. marginatus eggs allow a short larval development, lasting only 8 days. The energy required for embryogenesis was obtained from stored proteins. During larval development from D-shaped veliger until settlement, protein, lipid, and carbohydrate reserves were indistinctly stored for metamorphosis. Although total lipids increased, fatty acids in both neutral and polar lipids decreased during embryonic development. The depots allow a short larval development in which settlement is reached with lower amounts of stored neutral and polar lipids than the contents found in the oocytes. Non-methylene-interrupted dienoic fatty acid levels were similar to those of some polyunsaturated fatty acids, with increasing percentages at the onset of metamorphosis. This study indicates that S. marginatus exhibits a different pattern in the use of gross biochemical and fatty acid reserves during larval development compared to other razor clam and bivalve species, mainly due to the large size of its eggs and the short larval development stage reported in this species.  相似文献

Growth and development rates were determined for nauplii of Calanus finmarchicus (Gunnerus) in the near-shore waters of a western Norwegian fjord from in situ mesocosm incubations. The major food source for the nauplii was diatoms, but Phaeocystis sp., dinoflagellates and ciliates were also part of the diet. At local temperatures ranging from 4.8 to 5.2 °C the cumulative median development time from hatching to Nauplius VI was 19 d. The time taken to molt to the next naupliar stage was approximately constant (3 d) from Stages IV to VI, but Stage III needed the longest development time (5 d). The instantaneous growth rate in terms of body carbon was negative from hatching to Nauplius Stage II, but as high as 0.25 to 0.30 d−1 from Stage III to V. Enhancement of food resources by nutrient addition led to no significant change in specific growth rates. Additionally, the cohorts from different nutrient regimes showed almost equal development time, size and body carbon within stages. Length–weight relationships of nauplii from the two different food resources were: W low resources = 4.17 × 10−6 × L 2.03 (r 2 = 0.84) and W high resources = 4.29 × 10−6 × L 2.05 (r 2 = 0.92), where weight (W) is in micrograms of C and body length (L) in micrometers. The natural body morphology of naupliar stages I to VI is illustrated with digital images, including the final molt from Nauplius VI to Copepodid Stage I. In general, development of the nauplii was faster than that of the copepodids of C. finmarchicus, and structural growth was exponential from naupliar stages III to VI. This study validates our earlier results that nauplii of C. finmarchicus can obtain high growth and nearly maximal developmental rates at relatively low food levels (∼50 μg C l−1), suggesting that nauplii exhibit far less dependence on food supply than copepodids. The effects of food availability, female size, and social interactions on the quality of Pomacentrus amboinensis larvae at hatching were examined using two field-based experiments. In Experiment 1, food availability and female size significantly influenced size, eye diameter and levels of yolk reserves of larvae at hatching. Small females (47 to 52 mm standard length, SL) whose diets were not supplemented, produced the longest larvae (3.0 ± 0.01 mm total length, TL) with the least yolk reserves (50.1 ± 1.04 μm2). Irrespective of female size, those that received additional food produced larvae with the largest yolk-sacs (large females: 87.60 ± 1.53 μm2; small females: 80.14 ± 1.24 μm2). In Experiment 2, interactions with conspecifics had a greater affect on the somatic development of larvae at hatching than food availability. Increased social interactions resulted in larvae that were ⋍3% longer, with 2% greater head depth, than larvae from females that spawned in isolation on the experimental reefs. Fed females produced larvae with ⋍20% more yolk than larvae from females whose diets were not supplemented. All three factors (food availability, female size, and intensity of social interactions) tested within these experiments vary spatially and temporally among reefs. There is the potential, therefore, for larvae at the onset of the planktonic stage to vary in quality, level of development, and probability of survival. In the free-swimming cypris larva of Balanus balanoides, the mean level of triacylglycerols (triglycerides) was 8% of the ash-free dry weight. During metamorphosis into the juvenile barnacle, the triacylglycerol level in the newly settled non-feeding cypris larva fell to a mean of 2% of the ash-free dry weight. The ratio of fatty acids in the triacylglycerols remained constant throughout metamorphosis, indicating that all species of fatty acids were used as energy sources. There was no evidence for the selective utilisation of particular fatty acids.  相似文献

The fate of key species, such as the barnacle Amphibalanus improvisus, in the course of global change is of particular interest since any change in their abundance and/or performance may entail community-wide effects. In the fluctuating Western Baltic, species typically experience a broad range of environmental conditions, which may preselect them to better cope with climate change. In this study, we examined the sensitivity of two crucial ontogenetic phases (naupliar, cypris) of the barnacle toward a range of temperature (12, 20, and 28°C) and salinity (5, 15, and 30 psu) combinations. Under all salinity treatments, nauplii developed faster at intermediate and high temperatures. Cyprid metamorphosis success, in contrast, was interactively impacted by temperature and salinity. Survival of nauplii decreased with increasing salinity under all temperature treatments. Highest settlement rates occurred at the intermediate temperature and salinity combination, i.e., 20°C and 15 psu. Settlement success of “naive” cyprids, i.e., when nauplii were raised in the absence of stress (20°C/15 psu), was less impacted by stressful temperature/salinity combinations than that of cyprids with a stress history. Here, settlement success was highest at 30 psu particularly at low and high temperatures. Surprisingly, larval survival was not highest under the conditions typical for the Kiel Fjord at the season of peak settlement (20°C/15 psu). The proportion of nauplii that ultimately transformed to attached juveniles was, however, highest under these “home” conditions. Overall, only particularly stressful combinations of temperature and salinity substantially reduced larval performance and development. Given more time for adaptation, the relatively smooth climate shifts predicted will probably not dramatically affect this species.  相似文献

Arylsulphatases (ASases) have been identified in the mantle tissues of the barnacle Balanus eburneus Gould. This is the first report of these enzymes in the Cirripedia. Using p-nitrocatechol sulphate (NCS) as a substrate, the optimum pH for activity was found to be 5.6 in 0.5 M-acetate buffer, and substrate concentration of 12 mM. The activity of the enzyme was strongly inhibited by phosphate, sulphite and sulphate and not by cyanide, indicating the presence of Type II ASase. Biochemical and electrophoretic studies revealed the coexistence of at least two distinct Type II ASases in the mantle tissues. These are probably similar to the ASase-A and ASase-B reported for vertebrate tissues. The presence of multiple molecular forms of ASase capable of hydrolyzing potassium 6-benzoyl-2-naphthyl sulphate was demonstrated by polyacrylamide gel disc-electrophoresis. The activity patterns of ASases in the mantle tissues were studied in relation to the molt cycle. The activity of ASase-B followed a cyclic pattern which correlated with the molt stages, reaching a maximum in the postmolt. The activity of ASase-A remained essentially the same during the entire molt cycle. Analysis of the activities after dialysis indicates a change in the activity of ASase-B into a non-fluctuating pattern. The enzyme was found in all stages of development, with a ninefold increase in activity in adult forms. The fact that a greater activity was found in the nondigestive organs and that there is an increase in the activity of ASase in tissues of unfed (starved) specimens indicates that the enzyme does not function in the digestive processes, as suggested for other animals by certain investigators. The evidence in this study implicates a major role for dialyzable inhibitory factor(s) as the mechanism involved in the regulation of the activity of ASase-B during the molt cycle. The possible relationship of endogenous phosphate and/or neurosecretory substance(s) with the dialyzable inhibitory factor(s) is discussed. A discussion speculating on the relationship of ASase activity to the cyclic formation and hardening of the exoskeleton and adhesive substance(s) is also presented.  相似文献

For nearly a century researchers have investigated the uptake and utilization of dissolved organic matter (DOM) by marine invertebrates, but its contribution to their growth, reproduction, and survival remains unclear. Here, the benefit of DOM uptake was assessed for the marine bryozoan Bugula neritina (Linnaeus 1758) through performance comparisons of individuals in the presence and absence of DOM. The experiments were performed using B. neritina collected from floating docks in Beaufort, NC, USA from July to September 2004. Seawater was subjected to ultraviolet irradiation to reduce naturally occurring DOM, and then enriched with either 1 μM of palmitic acid or a mixture containing 1 μM each of glucose, alanine, aspartic acid and glycine. Larvae in DOM-enriched and DOM-reduced treatments were sampled and induced to metamorphose following 1, 6, 12, and 24 h of continuous swimming at 25°C. Sampled larvae were assessed for initiation of metamorphosis, completion of metamorphosis, and ancestrular lophophore size to determine the extent to which energy acquired from DOM uptake could offset the metabolic costs of prolonged larval swimming. DOM treatment had no significant effect on initiation of metamorphosis, but did have a significant effect on completion of metamorphosis and lophophore size. Larvae swimming in DOM-enriched treatments for 24 h experienced a 20% increase in metamorphic completion rate, compared to larvae swimming for 24 h in the DOM-reduced treatment. In addition, larvae in the amino acid and sugar mixture for 24 h had a significantly larger lophophore surface area and volume (23 and 31%, respectively), compared to larvae in DOM-depleted seawater. To ensure that the increases in performance found in larvae with access to DOM were not due to a decrease in metabolic activity, the respiration rates for these larvae were compared to those of larvae in DOM-depleted seawater. There were no significant differences between these treatments, indicating that the increases in performance were due to the energy acquired from DOM. These results clearly show that for B. neritina, DOM uptake results in increased metamorphic success and in the size of the feeding apparatus following an extended larval swimming duration.  相似文献

The reproductive parameters of three species of barnacles common in warm-water regions,Balanus amphitrite Darwin,B. eburneus Gould andB. trigonus Darwin, cultured singly or in pairs for 2 1/2 yr, were compared. All specimens, collected from Tokyo Bay and studied between 1985 and 1987, were fed on newly hatchedArtemia sp. larvae (Tetra strain) and phytoplankton culture and were maintained under constant temperature (20°C) and controlled photoperiods (10 h light:14 h dark). The breeding frequencies of these three species were equally high, from 2 to 4 broods mo–1 in the first year; they were relatively high between October and February, averaging 3 broods mo–1.B. amphitrite, B. eburneus andB. trigonus produced 24, 21 and 11 broods yr–1, respectively. Brood size was quite variable among the three species examined, yielding 4000 embryos brood–1 inB. amphitrite andB. eburneus and 6000 inB. trigonus. Brood interval averaged 4 to 9 d. The moult occurred over short intervals of 4 to 10 d moult–1. Both breeding and moulting frequencies were influenced by low temperature and starvation. Self-fertilization was observed in all species and was more frequent inB. amphitrite than inB. eburneus andB. trigonus. Nutritional condition and temperature seemed to be the main external factors regulating both breeding and moulting processes in barnacles.  相似文献

The brittle star Ophionereis schayeri has abbreviated non-feeding development through a reduced ophiopluteus and a vitellaria larva. The metamorphic changes involved with development from a bilateral larva to a radial juvenile were examined in detail. The reduced ophiopluteus has a continuous ciliated band that breaks up into discontinuous ciliary ridges at the vitellaria stage. As the vitellaria develops, the juvenile rudiment forms in the mid-ventral region. The rudiment then undergoes a morphogenetic movement to the left of the larval anterior/posterior axis. This results in a dramatic transformation from bilateral to radial symmetry and is accompanied by development of juvenile structures and settlement, 6–7 days after fertilisation. Ophiuroid development through one larval stage, the ophiopluteus, is termed Type I; whereas development through two larval stages, the ophiopluteus and vitellaria, is termed Type II. We examined the evolutionary changes in the expression of Type II development in Ophionereis by comparing the ontogeny of six species with a range of larval forms. O. fasciata has the ancestral-like planktotrophic ophiopluteus. Vestigial pluteal structures in the larvae of O. schayeri, provide a link between ophiopluteal and vitellarial forms during evolution of non-feeding development. The diversity of larval forms in Ophionereis indicates that evolution of non-feeding development through a vitellaria (Type II) may have involved an increase in egg size, reduction of pluteal structures and shortening of the time to metamorphosis. Assessment of the phylogenetic significance of Types I and II development awaits additional comparative data on the metamorphic stages of other ophiuroid genera.Communicated by G.F.
