The chemical composition and physical conformation of natural organic matter (NOM) play a major role in regulating its capacity to retain hydrophobic organic compounds. Naphthalene and phenanthrene were used to study the correlations between sorption/desorption isotherm nonlinearity and compositional data obtained from quantitative 13C solid-state DPMAS NMR spectroscopy for soil and peat organic matter with or without lipids. Sorption experiments were conducted using a batch equilibration method. Desorption experiments were carried out immediately following the sorption experiments by three successive decant-refill cycles. Hysteresis was observed in all samples. Nonlinear sorption behavior was increased by removal of lipids from the NOM. The hysteresis index, obtained from the ratio of the Freundlich exponents (N values) for the desorption and sorption isotherms, was lower in the lipid-extracted NOM samples than in the same samples without lipid extraction. The relationship between the extent of hysteresis and the characteristics of the 13C DPMAS NMR spectra indicates that altering NOM composition through lipid extraction not only increased the proportion of aromatic-C content, but also increased sorption/desorption hysteresis. Our data also suggest that the hysteresis index is negatively related to aromaticity.  相似文献

Methods to characterize the organic solute sorption distribution coefficient, organic carbon content, and specific surface area of aquifer solids from the site of a field experiment on solute transport in groundwater were refined for application to small subsamples of 10-cm depth increments taken from 5-cm diameter cores. Initial results indicate that the average sorption characteristics of the Borden aquifer do not vary appreciably along the trajectory of the solute plumes. However, the sorption distribution coefficient of tetrachloroethylene varied over nearly an order of magnitude among 10-cm depth increments in one core sample. Preliminary evidence suggests that the sorption distribution coefficients for four halogenated organic solutes vary proportionally among core strata. However, the distribution coefficients for sorption of tetrachloroethylene on various depth increments are not well correlated with either organic carbon content or specific surface area, suggesting that as yet unidentified mineral phases may play a significant role in sorption of such solutes by the sandy aquifer solids.  相似文献

The application of a solvophobic approach for predicting the sorption of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOC) was evaluated with data collected using synthetic sorbents and soils. The experimental data consisted of batch equilibrium sorption coefficients (KD), as well as soil-TLC and reversed-phase liquid chromatographic (RPLC) retention factors (κ′). All data were collected using aqueous solutions and binary or ternary solvent mixtures of water, methanol, acetone, and acetonitrile. As predicted by the theory, the chromatographic retention factors and sorption coefficients for HOC decreased log-linearly with increasing fraction of organic cosolvent in binary solvents. Model parameters estimated from the binary solvent data could be used to predict sorption (or retention) from ternary solvents. Reasonable agreement was found between model parameters reported in the literature and those estimated using the data from batch sorption, soil-TLC, and RPLC studies.  相似文献

Cosolvent effects on sorption isotherm linearity   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Sorption-desorption hysteresis, slow desorption kinetics, and other nonideal phenomena have been attributed to the differing sorptive characteristics of the natural organic polymers associated with soils and sediments. In this study, aqueous and mixed solvent systems were used to investigate the effects of a cosolvent, methanol, on sorption isotherm linearity with natural organic matter (NOM), and to evaluate whether these results support, or weaken, the rubbery/glassy polymer conceptualization of NOM. All of the sorption isotherms displayed some nonlinear character. Our data indicates that all of the phenanthrene and atrazine isotherms were nonlinear up to the highest equilibrium solution concentration to solute solubility in water or cosolvent ratios (Ce/Sw,c) used, approximately 0.018 and 0.070, respectively. Isotherm linearity was also observed to increase with volumetric methanol content (fc). This observation is consistent with the NOM rubbery/glassy polymer conceptualization: the presence of methanol in NOM increased isotherm linearity as do solvents in synthetic polymers, and suggests that methanol is interacting with the NOM, enhancing its homogeneity as a sorptive phase so that sorption is less bimodal as fc increases. When the equilibrium solution concentration was normalized for solute solubility in water or methanol-water solutions, greater relative sorption magnitude was observed for the methanol-water treatments. This observation, in conjunction with the faster sorption kinetics observed in the methanol-water sediment column systems, indicates that the increase in relative sorption magnitude with fc may be attributed to the faster sorption kinetics in the methanol-water systems, and hence, greater relative sorptive uptake for the rubbery polymer fraction of NOM at similar time scales.  相似文献

In order to determine the mechanisms of the retention of 60Co, 85Sr and 134Cs in natural silica sand columns, desorption experiments were performed by changes of pH and ionic strength and by injection of natural organic matter (NOM). Injection of KCl (0.1 M) resulted in a high release of 60Co (60-100%) and 85Sr (72-100%) but a smaller release of 134Cs (31-66%). Only limited release of 60Co (66%) and 85Sr (71%) and no release of 134Cs were observed by injection of NOM. The different percentages of desorption were related to the chemical characteristics of the organic colloids previously retained in columns before the desorption step. The results evidenced different sorption processes on energetically heterogeneous surface sites. According to the initial conditions, the binding of the radionuclides to the solid phase resulted from weak and easily reversible sorption processes to strong association probably by inner sphere complexes. The rather weak release of 134Cs by KCl was attributed to the strong retention of 134Cs by clay coatings on the natural silica sand surfaces.  相似文献

The sorptive behavior of the experimental herbicide quinmerac (7-chloro-3-methyl-quinoline-8-carboxylic acid) was investigated in soils of different organic carbon content. Distribution coefficients are low (Kd = 0.03 - 12 mL g−1) and are mainly determined by the soil organic carbon content. The adsorption mechanism operating in neutral to slightly acid agricultural soils is supposed to be cation bridging with the anionic form of quinmerac. Under acid conditions (pH 5.2) the predominating sorption mechanism is hydrophobic interaction. Therefore soil pH and cationic composition are also major factors determining the sorptive capacity of soils for quinmerac.

Adsorption kinetics, equilibrium adsorption and desorption isotherms were determined in batch experiments. Sorption kinetics were investigated at various times from 15 min to 96 hours. A two-step sorption behavior with time was found for the anionic form indicating two types of sorption mechanisms or sorption sites. Equilibrium for the first type was reached at a time-scale of minutes and for the second type after 24 hours. Adsorption isotherms were determined for two soil/solution ratios 1/5 and 1/3. Alteration of the adsorbent concentration exerted a strong influence on the adsorption isotherms. An increase of sorption was found with increasing adsorbent concentration. Under natural soil conditions sorption is therefore expected to be higher compared to the batch experiments. Desorption isotherms were obtained using the consecutive desorption method. Desorption hysteresis was not observed which indicates weak interactions. Implications of the results for the movement of quinmerac under field conditions and for models describing transport are discussed.  相似文献

A new reactive transport modelling approach and examples of its application are presented, dealing with the impact of sorption/desorption kinetics on the spreading of solutes, e.g. organic contaminants, in groundwater. Slow sorption/desorption is known from the literature to be strongly responsible for the retardation of organic contaminants. The modelling concept applied in this paper quantifies sorption/desorption kinetics by an intra-particle diffusion approach. According to this idea, solute uptake by or release from the aquifer material is modelled at small scale by a "slow" diffusion process where the diffusion coefficient is reduced as compared to the aqueous diffusion coefficient due to (i) the size and shape of intra-particle pores and (ii) retarded transport of solutes within intra-particle pores governed by a nonlinear sorption isotherm. This process-based concept has the advantage of requiring only measurable model parameters, thus avoiding fitting parameters like first-order rate coefficients. In addition, the approach presented here allows for modelling of slow sorption/desorption in lithologically nonuniform media. Therefore, it accounts for well-known experimental findings indicating that sorptive properties depend on (i) the grain size distribution of the aquifer material and (ii) the lithological composition (e.g. percentage of quartz, sandstone, limestone, etc.) of each grain size fraction. The small-scale physico-chemical model describing sorption/desorption is coupled to a large-scale model of groundwater flow and solute transport. Consequently, hydraulic heterogeneities may also be considered by the overall model. This coupling is regarded as an essential prerequisite for simulating field-scale scenarios which will be addressed by a forthcoming publication. This paper focuses on mathematical model formulation, implementation of the numerical code and lab-scale model applications highlighting the sorption and desorption behavior of an organic contaminant (Phenanthrene) with regard to three lithocomponents exhibiting different sorptive properties. In particular, it is shown that breakthrough curves (BTCs) for lithologically nonuniform media cannot be obtained via simple arithmetic averaging of breakthrough curves for lithologically uniform media. In addition, as no analytical solutions are available for model validation purposes, simulation results are compared to measurements from lab-scale column experiments. The model results indicate that the new code can be regarded as a valuable tool for predicting long-term contaminant uptake or release, which may last for several hundreds of years for some lithocomponents. In particular, breakthrough curves simulated by pure forward modelling reproduce experimental data much better than a calibrated standard first-order kinetics reactive transport model, thus indicating that the new approach is of high quality and may be advantageously used for supporting the design of remediation strategies at contaminated sites where some lithocomponents and/or grain size classes may provide a long-term pollutant source.  相似文献

Sorption and desorption behaviors of phenanthrene and naphthalene were studied with the whole sediment, humic acid (HA) and humin samples from downstream and upstream sites along the Kishon River, Israel. The 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectra and the sorption coefficients suggest that sorption occurs to both aromatic and aliphatic moieties of the sedimentary organic matter and that rigid paraffinic domains probably contribute to the sorption non-linearity. The carbon-normalized Freundlich affinity values for the two sorbates were significantly higher for the whole sediment and humin samples from the downstream region of the river than for the upstream sediment samples. On the basis of the measured affinity values, the sorbents can be arranged in the following order: humin>HA>whole sediment. Phenanthrene exhibited the lowest desorption from the whole sediment samples compared with the other sorbents. For naphthalene, the desorption hysteresis obtained with the whole sediment and humin samples were similar: both exhibited a decrease in desorption with decreasing solute concentration. The higher sorption affinities observed for all the organic fractions from the downstream sediment are suggested to be related to the low levels of polar domains and humin content. It is concluded that in bulk sediment samples, the overall contribution of the HA fraction to short-term sorption is of high importance, but the sorption non-linearity is controlled mainly by the humin complexes. The low desorption potential recorded for the whole sediment samples could affect the natural attenuation of the sorbed hydrophobic organic compounds.  相似文献

The sorption and desorption of heterocyclic organic compounds in a complex multisolute system to a natural clayey till was investigated. The composition of the solutes reflect a simplified composition of an aqueous phase in contact with coal tar. Sorption was studied for two ratios (s:l) of clayey till (solid) to aqueous phase (liquid). The effect of the complex mixture of solutes on sorption of the four heterocyclic compounds: benzofuran, dibenzofuran, benzothiophene, and dibenzothiophene is evaluated by comparison with their sorption measured in single-solute systems. Sorption of the four compounds is affected by the complex mixture, with sorption decreases for all four compounds at high s:l ratio indicating competitive sorption. The effect on sorption of the individual compounds is not related to solubility or hydrophobicity of the compounds. Freundlich-type isotherms are observed for all compounds in the high s:l-ratio experiments, but for the most hydrophobic compounds isotherms are close to linear. The sorption of N-compounds and benzofuran is apparently influenced by cation exchange and dipole–dipole attraction to clay minerals. At high concentrations a dramatic increase in the sorption of the most strongly sorbing compounds is observed in the low s:l-ratio experiment. The dramatic increase in sorption appears to be a result of multimolecular layer sorption or condensation on surfaces in the clayey till at high surface density of organic compounds, and the data are fitted by BET (Brunauer, Emmet, and Teller) type 2 isotherms. The increase may or may not be induced by the presence of N-heterocyclic compounds sorbed by cation exchange and dipole–dipole attraction. The desorption of the compounds was studied for the low s:l ratio where multimolecular layer formation apparently had occurred. Partially irreversible sorption, hysteric Langmuir type desorption with isotherms of very high Kl coefficient, or behaviour reflecting dissolution of a condensed phase is observed.  相似文献

In a field experiment, two inorganic tracers and five organic solutes were injected into an unconfined sand aquifer. Breakthrough response curves were obtained at several points downgradient of the injection zone. These response curves are analyzed using a model which assumes equilibrium sorption and two models which postulate physical nonequilibrium. The physical nonequilibrium models hypothesize the existence of zones of immobile water, which act as diffusion sources and sinks for the solutes. The physical nonequilibrium models better simulate the sharp breakthrough and extended tailing exhibited by the experimental responses than does the model assuming equilibrium sorption. The reasonableness of parameters obtained from curve-fitting the data is assessed. The two physical nonequilibrium models are compared.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to assess sorption and desorption of tylosin, a macrolide antimicrobial chemical used in swine, cattle, and poultry production, in three silty clay loam soils of South Dakota and compare soil sorption to sand and manure sorption. The silty clay loam soils, from a toposequence in eastern South Dakota, standardized sand samples, and swine manure were used in 24-h batch sorption studies with tylosin concentrations ranging from 25 to 232 micro mole/L. Desorption from soil was conducted over a four-day period. Partition coefficients, based on the Freundlich isotherm (K(f)) or K(d) values, were calculated. K(f) values for the silty clay loams were similar, not influenced by landscape position, and averaged 1,350 with isotherm slopes ranging from 0.85 to 0.93. K(f) values for sand were dependent on solution/sand ratios and pH, ranging from 1.4 to 25.1. K(d) values of manure were dependent on the solution type and ranged from 840 L/kg with urine to about 175 L/kg when sorbed from water. Desorption of tylosin from each soil over the four-day period was < 0.2% of the amount added. The soils' high K(f) values and low desorption amounts suggest that once tylosin is in these soils, leaching to lower depths may not occur. However, this does not preclude runoff with soil eroded particles. If tylosin reaches a sand aquifer, through bypass flow or other mechanism(s), movement in the aquifer most likely would occur.  相似文献

Sorption of hydrophobic organic compounds onto organoclays   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

The behavior and fate of nonionic hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) in the environment are mainly controlled by their interactions with various components of soils and sediments. Due to their large surface area and abundance in many soils, smectites may greatly influence the fate and transport of the contaminants in the environment. In our experiments, HOC sorption by hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA)-modified smectite linearly increased with the amount of HDTMA added to the clay. However, tetramethylammonium (TMA)- and dodecyltrimethylammonium (DTMA)-modified smectites showed not only inferiority in their sorption of HOC compared with the HDTMA-smectite, but also a partially decreased HOC sorption at specific surfactant loading levels. This means that the sorption of organoclays for organic contaminants was significantly influenced by the amount and size of the surfactants added on the clay. In addition, it seems that the interlayer structure (e.g., pore size) formed at each surfactant loading level plays an important role to adsorb HOC in different amount.  相似文献

The effect of dissolved organic carbon as present in landfill leachate, on the sorption of organic micropollutants in aquifer materials was studied by laboratory batch and column experiments involving 15 non-polar organic chemicals, 5 landfill leachates and 4 aquifer materials of low organic carbon content. The experiments showed that hydrophobic organic micropollutants do partition into dissolved organic carbon found in landfill leachate potentially increasing their mobility. However, landfill leachate interacted with aquifer materials apparently increases the sorbent affinity for the hydrophobic micropollutants. The combination of these two mechanisms affected the observed distribution coefficients within a factor of two, in some cases increasing and in other cases decreasing the sorption of the chemicals. No means for prediction of the effect is currently available, but from a practical point of view, the effect of landfill leachate on retardation of organic micropollutants in aquifer material seems limited.  相似文献

At the Canadian Forces Base, Borden, hexachloroethane (HCE) that was introduced into an unconfined sand aquifer disappeared rapidly, with a half-life of about 40 days. Laboratory-scale studies, initiated to help assess the fate of HCE, indicated that it is reductively biotransformed to tetrachloroethylene (PCE) both by aerobic cultures of wastewater microflora and by microcosms containing unhomogenized Borden aquifer material. The results also indicate that the agents involved in the aquifer transformation of HCE to PCE are not homogeneously distributed in the aquifer material.  相似文献

Naturally occurring nanoparticles (NP) enhance the transport of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in porous media. In addition, the debate on the environmental impact of engineered nanoparticles (ENP) has become increasingly important. HOC bind strongly to carbonaceous ENP. Thus, carbonaceous ENP may also act as carriers for contaminant transport and might be important when compared to existing transport processes. ENP bound transport is strongly linked to the sorption behavior, and other carbonaceous ENP-specific properties. In our analysis the HOC-ENP sorption mechanism, as well as ENP size and ENP residence time, was of major importance. Our results show that depending on ENP size, sorption kinetics and residence time in the system, the ENP bound transport can be estimated either as (1) negligible, (2) enhancing contaminant transport, or (3) should be assessed by reactive transport modeling. One major challenge to this field is the current lack of data for HOC-ENP desorption kinetics.  相似文献

Sorption equilibria and rates were characterized for a matrix of four aquifer sands and two slightly to moderately hydrophobic organic solutes (nitrobenzene and lindane), and the effects of sorption on the behavior of these solutes in saturated systems of the soils were determined. Experimental data were used to test and evaluate a variety of mathematical models for predicting contaminant fate and transport in groundwater systems.Observed equilibrium relationships between soil and solution phase solute concentrations were found to be described best by the nonlinear Freundlich isotherm model. It was further determined that the sorption process in the systems tested is rate controlled, requiring several days to approach equilibrium in completely mixed batch reactors. Subsequent modeling of solute transport in continuous flow soil column reactors was found to be most successful when rate-controlled models were used, the best results were obtained with a dual-resistance model incorporating the coupled mass transport steps of boundary-layer and intraparticle diffusion.  相似文献

A natural gradient emplaced-source (ES) controlled field experiment was conducted at the Borden aquifer research site, Ontario, to study the transport of dissolved plumes emanating from residual dense nonaqueous-phase liquid (DNAPL) source zones. The specific objective of the work presented here is to determine the effects of solute and co-solute concentrations on sorption and retardation of dissolved chlorinated solvent-contaminant plumes. The ES field experiment comprised a controlled emplacement of a residual multicomponent DNAPL below the groundwater table and intensive monitoring of dissolved-phase plumes of trichloromethane (TCM), trichloroethylene (TCE), and perchloroethylene (PCE) plumes continuously generated in the aquifer down gradient from gradual source dissolution. Estimates of plume retardation (and dispersion) were obtained from 3-D numerical simulations that incorporated transient source input and flow regimes monitored during the test. PCE, the most retarded solute, surprisingly exhibited a retardation factor approximately 3 times lower than observed in a previous Borden tracer test by Mackay et al. [Water Resour. Res. 22 (1986) 2017] conducted approximately 150 m away. Also, an absence of temporal trend in PCE retardation contrasted with the previous Borden test. Supporting laboratory studies on ES site core indicated that sorption was nonlinear and competitive, i.e. reduced sorption of PCE was observed in the presence of TCE. Consideration of the effects of relatively high co-solute (TCE) concentration (competitive sorption) in addition to PCE concentration effects (nonlinear sorption) was necessary to yield laboratory-based PCE retardation estimates consistent with the field plume values. Concentration- and co-solute-based sorption and retardation analysis was also applied to the previous low-concentration pulse injection test of Mackay et al. [Water Resour. Res. 22 (1986) 2017] and was able to successfully predict the temporal field retardation trends observed in that test. While it is acknowledged that other "nonideal transport" effects may contribute, our analysis predicts differences in the PCE retardation magnitude and trend between the two experiments that are consistent with field observations based on the marked solute concentration differences that resulted from contrasting source conditions. Solute and co-solute concentration effects have heretofore received little attention, but may have wide significance in aquifers contaminated by point-source pollutants because many plumes contain mixed solutes over wide concentration ranges in strata that are likely subject to nonlinear sorption.  相似文献

Condensed organic matter with higher affinity for hydrophobic organic compounds (HOC) is currently held responsible for slow desorption and concomitant lower bioavailabilities of HOC in sediments and soils. In an experiment with Daphnia magna and IHSS Peat Humic Acid (PHA), we showed that the bioconcentration factor (BCF) of 3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB-77) was directly related to the charge of the humic colloid, as predicted by the metal-humic binding model WHAM. Consistent with the type of binding to the humic acid (counter-ion accumulation vs. specific binding), increasing the concentration of Na+ and Ca2+ ions generated opposite effects on colloid charge and HOC binding by the humic acid. Condensation as a colloidal phenomenon in solution as well as on surfaces needs to be addressed as a contributor to lower bioavailabilities and, possibly, to slower desorption kinetics.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to quantify sorption properties for kerogen/black carbon (BC)-bearing sediments. Single-solute sorption isotherms were measured for five pristine marine sediments using phenanthrene, naphthalene, 1,3,5-trichlorobenzene, and 1,4-dichlorobenzene as the sorbates. The results showed that the sorption isotherms were nonlinear and that the organic carbon normalized single point KOC values were comparable to those reported in the literature for the purified keorgen and BC, but are much higher than the data reported for HA and kerogen/BC-containing terrestrial soils and sediments. It is likely that koergen and BC associated with these pristine marine sediments may not be encapsulated with humic acids or Fe and Mn oxides and hydroxides as often do in terrestrial soils and sediments. As a result, they may be fully accessible to sorbing molecules, exhibiting higher sorption capacities. The study suggests that competition from background HOCs and reduced accessibility when kerogen and BC are associated with terrestrial sediments may dramatically increase variability of sorption reactivities of geosorbents. Such variability may lead to large uncertainties in the prediction of sorption from the contents of kerogen and/or BC along with TOC.  相似文献
