Data on the diet, feeding habits and daily rations of Hoplostethus mediterraneus Cuvier, 1829 in the bathyal eastern Ionian Sea (Mediterranean Sea) are presented. A total of 430 specimens collected by bottom trawls at depths ranging from 473 to 603 m during four 24-h day–night sampling cycles covering the four annual seasons was examined. H. mediterraneus diet consisted of pelagic and vagile epibenthic prey, mainly crustaceans, and was dominated by benthopelagic natantian decapods (83.35% IRI, index of relative importance). Seasonal changes in diet were apparent and related to seasonal fluctuations in suprabenthic and zooplanktonic prey in the environment. Diel patterns in stomach fullness and trends in diel feeding cycles are discussed in relation to the vertical migratory movements of available prey (i.e. suprabenthos and zooplankton). Daily-ration estimates were determined by evacuation-rate models and ranged from 0.143% to 0.397% WW/WW. Overall, daily-ration estimates were within the range of the daily consumption of other deep-sea fish. Deduced from diet contents, we found a constant gross energy intake (305–316 kcal g–1) during all seasons. As a possible response to the reproductive peak of mature females observed in summer, H. mediterraneus increases its food consumption, which, in turn, is coupled with an increase in food availability.Communicated by S.A. Diet composition and feeding intensity of the horse mackerel, Trachurus trachurus, collected in the eastern Adriatic Sea, were examined. Stomach contents of 1,200 specimens, taken at monthly intervals (January–December 1996), were analyzed. The stomachs contents consisted of five major prey groups: Crustacea (Euphausiacea, Mysidacea, Decapoda), Cephalopoda and Teleostei. Euphausiacea constituted the most important food resource by weight, number and frequency occurrence. Teleosts were the second most important food category, while mysids, decapods and cephalopods were occasional food. There was little seasonal variation in diet. Euphausiids were dominant prey during all seasons, and were especially abundant from spring and autumn. Feeding intensity of horse mackerel varied during the year. The lowest intensity of feeding was recorded in winter (February, March) and early spring (April) during the lower sea temperature as well as at the time of intensive spawning. Feeding activity increased upon spawning period (May and June) and was also higher during summer. Feeding intensity and diet composition changed during the diurnal cycle. The highest feeding intensity was recorded at night and during early morning hours. Euphausiids, mysids and a greater part of teleosts dominated night and morning diet, while decapods and cephalopods were most frequently in the daily and evening diet.Communicated by O. In order to assess diet composition and niche breadth of this species, we analysed the stomach content of 182 specimens collected monthly along the eastern coast of Sicily (Central Mediterranean Sea). Overall, 50 prey taxa belonging to five major groups (algae, gastropods, crustaceans, polychaetes, fishes) were identified in 102 full stomachs. Benthic or epibenthic crustaceans, such as decapods, amphipods and isopods were the most important prey, whereas algae, gastropods, polychaetes and fishes were only occasionally ingested. In terms of composition by species, the diet of Scorpaena maderensis was characterized by a variety of rare or unimportant prey, which was consumed by few individuals only, although sometimes in large amount. As a result, S. maderensis can be considered a generalized and opportunistic feeder. The feeding intensity followed roughly a seasonal trend, with a minimum food intake in summer. The individual fish size was the most important factor affecting diet. According to the observed ontogenetic shift, small-sized individuals fed primarily on small crustaceans (i.e. amphipods and isopods), whereas large-sized specimens consumed preferably bigger and more vagile prey, such as walking and swimming decapods. No significant differences in diet were observed in relation to sex of predator and sampling season.  相似文献

The authors investigated the carotenoids in the hermit crab, Clibanarius misanthropus (Risso), from the Black Sea. By means of columnar and thin-layer chromatography the following carotenoids were found to be present in that species; -carotene, canthaxanthin, lutein, astaxanthin and some kind of polioxyxanthophill.  相似文献

The pleopod ventilatory activity of the tube-dwelling amphipods Corophium volutator (Pallas) and C. arenarium Crawford is intermittent. Unlike the free-living amphipod Marinogammarus obtusatus (Dahl), which increases its rate of pleopod beating, the pleopod beat rate of both Corophium species is unaffected by low oxygen concentrations. However, the nature of the intermittent ventilation rhythm is altered so that, at low oxygen concentrations, the pleopods of Corophium beat almost continuously. It is suggested that the intermittent ventilation of Corophium can be interpreted as an adaptation to a tubicolous existence. The peracaridean Tanais chevreuxi Dollfus has 2 independent ventilatory systems, the maxilliped epipodites and the pleopods. The former, which respond to low oxygen concentrations, are thought to be the principal respiratory organs of T. chevreuxi, while the pleopods, which show no response to low oxygen tensions, are believed to be primarily concerned in filter feeding.  相似文献

Bottle incubations were conducted in March, July/August and October 1992. to measure the daily rations (R) and objectively characterize the diets of the calanoid copepodsEucalanus elongatus, Undinula vulgaris, Centropages velificatus andTemora stylifera from the west Florida continental shelf. Daily rations,R, were clustered around two, order-of-magnitude different means, 1.3 and 11.2% of body C d–1, representative of quiescent and active feeding modes, respectively. The food concentration at which the transition from quiescent to active mode occurred was influenced by food particle size. In the quiescent mode, diets were dominated by nanoplankton, whereas no food type dominated the diet in the active mode. Selective feeding, defined as a statistically significant difference between the frequency distributions of foods in the diet and environment, occurred in both quiescent and active copepods. However, what appeared to be selective feeding in quiescent copepods could be explained by processes that passively modified the distribution of the diet relative to that of the food supply. Conversely, selective feeding in active copepods apparently resulted from foraging for particles >5 m in diameter in food environments dominated by nanoplankton (<5 m).  相似文献

Vertical distribution, chlorophylla (chla) and phaeopigment concentrations in the gut, and natural nitrogen isotope ratio ( 15N) were investigated for pelagic amphipodsThemisto japonica (Bovallius) collected from the Sea of Japan in July 1987. Differences in diel vertical migration behavior were clearly observed between small and largeT. japonica. Many small (<5 mm body length) amphipods appeared in the phytoplankton-rich shallow layers. Their gut pigment concentrations were higher (mean 0.52 ± 0.15µg chla g–1 amphipod) than those of large amphipods (mean 0.33±0.14µg g–1); this implies that the amphipods fed on a large amount of phytoplankton during the early stage of life. The 15N values of small amphipods were lower (5.7 to 6.3) than those of large amphipods (6.8 to 11.7), reflecting the lower trophic level of small amphipods compared to large ones. The 15N values for small amphipods were similar to those of herbivorous zooplankton. The amphipods' feeding behavior thus changes from herbivorous to carnivorous as they grow.  相似文献

The biology of six amphipods of the Black Sea has been investigated during several years. The species are: Amphithoe vaillanti Lucas, Pleonexes gammaroides Bate, Erichthonius difformis M.-Edw., Dexamine spinosa (Mont.), Gammarus insensibilis Stock, and Gammarus olivii M.-Edw. Some regularities common to all these species have been established. The population dynamics are similar: at the beginning of the year, adult specimens prevail; they represent individuals from the foregoing year; in April/May, a change in the population composition occurs, and young individuals appear. All six species breed throughout the year, with two breeding maxima — in spring and in autumn. Females predominate during most of the year. However, in the preparatory period of spring breeding, the number of males and females is almost equal (sex ratio about 1:1). The growth rate of the amphipods is controlled, among other factors, by water temperature. Temperature, in particular, determines the moulting frequency. The intervals between successive moults vary from 3 to 6 days at temperatures above 20°C to 24 days at 7° to 9°C. Increase in body length is similar in G. olivii (1.2 mm) and G. insensibilis (2.5 mm) in the winter months; in summer it amounts to 1.6 to 3.3 mm. The dependence of growth rate on age was established for all species investigated. Young specimens grow more quickly than adults. The quantity of eggs increases with the body length of females.  相似文献

Mesograzers are thought to play a critical role in seagrass beds by preventing overgrowth of ephemeral algae. On the Swedish west coast, eelgrass Zostera marina has decreased in recent decades as a result of eutrophication and increased growth of macroalgal mats (mainly filamentous Ulva spp. and Ectocarpales), with no indication of grazer control of the algae. The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of the amphipod Gammarus locusta to control algal blooms during nutrient-enriched and ambient conditions, using a combination of laboratory, field and model studies. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that juvenile and adult G. locusta could consume both Ulva spp. and Ectocarpales, but that consumption of Ulva spp. was significantly higher. Cannibalism was common in individual treatments involving multiple size-classes of G. locusta, but only large, male gammarids consumed smaller juveniles in the presence of Ulva spp. as an alternative food source. However, no negative effects of cannibalism were found on total grazing impact. A model using size-specific grazing rates and growth rates of G. locusta and of Ulva spp. suggests that approximately 62 young juvenile, or 27 adult G. locusta are needed per gram DW of Ulva spp. to control the algal growth during ambient nutrient conditions, and approximately 2.6 times as many gammarids during enhanced nutrient conditions. On the Swedish west coast, densities and mean sizes of G. locusta in eelgrass beds are below these critical values, suggesting that the gammarids will not be able to control the growth of the filamentous macroalgae. However, in the field cage experiment, immigration of juveniles and reproduction of encaged adult G. locusta resulted in unexpectedly high densities of G. locusta (>4,000 individual m−2), and very low biomass of Ulva spp. in both ambient and nutrient-enriched treatments. Although the high numbers of juveniles in all cages precluded any significant treatment effects, this suggests that in the absent of predators, the population of G. locusta can grow significantly and control the biomass of Ulva spp. Furthermore, low grazing of Ectocarpales in the laboratory and high biomass of these filamentous brown algae in the field indicate a preference for the more palatable green algae Ulva spp. This study indicates that the high grazing capacity of G. locusta, in combination with high reproduction and growth rates, would allow the amphipod to play a key role in Z. marina ecosystems by controlling destructive blooms of filamentous green algae. However, high predation pressure appears to prevent large populations of G. locusta in eelgrass beds on the Swedish west coast today.  相似文献

It is unclear whether stingless bees in the genus Melipona (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Meliponini) can reliably encode the distance to a food source through recruitment sounds produced inside the nest, in part because the sound features correlated with distance also vary with food quality. We therefore trained marked foragers of two species, Melipona mandacaia and M. bicolor, to feeders at different distances and to different sucrose concentrations at the same distance. In both species, foragers successfully recruited to a rich 2.5-m food source and produced pulsed recruitment sounds in which pulse duration was significantly and positively correlated with distance to the rich food source. When returning from poorer food sources (0.6–1.5 m), foragers of both species decreased sound production, producing shorter sound pulses and longer sound interpulses than they did for 2.5 m food located at the same distance. Thus the temporal structure of M. mandacaia and M. bicolor recruitment sounds varies with distance and food quality. However, nestmates were not recruited by performances for poorer food sources (0.6–1.5 m), whose sucrose concentration was sufficiently low to affect recruitment sounds. Surprisingly, the interphase (the time between behavioral phases that communicate location) also increases with decreasing food quality in the closely related honeybees (Apis), suggesting a potential homology in the effect of food quality on the recruitment systems of Apis and Melipona. We explore the evolutionary implications of these similarities.Communicated by M. Giurfa  相似文献

Genetic variation at the mannosephosphate isomerase (MPI) locus was examined in the euryhaline sibling species Gammarus zaddachi Sexton and G. salinus Spooner. Both crustacean amphipods share identical enzyme mobilities, following electrophoresis on vertical starch gels. The MPI locus turned out to be highly polymorphic; it is encoded by 6 alleles in G. zaddachi and 7 alleles in G. salinus. Geographic variation of allelic diversity was studied in samples from 9 G. zaddachi and 10 G. salinus populations, primarily obtained from Baltic Sea and North Sea sites. Patterns of inter- and intraspecific heterogeneity are described. Differences in allelic composition exist between Baltic and North Sea samples of G. salinus. In G. zaddachi, levels of polymorphism are higher in North Sea populations than in those from Baltic Sea areas. The significance of these findings is discussed in the light of previous biochemical genetic investigations on the population structure of the two amphipods considered.  相似文献

A conjoint analysis of gut contents and stable C and N isotopes was applied to determine the main food sources and feeding habits of dominant amphipods in an eelgrass bed (Zostera marina) in Gwangyang Bay, Korea. Gut content observations demonstrated that, while Gammaropsis japonicus and Jassa slatteryi are herbivorous, feeding on epiphytes and detritus, Pontogeneia rostrata and Monocorophium acherusicum are omnivorous, feeding on mesozooplankton fragments and detritus. Stable isotope data confirmed that epiphytes, detritus, and mesozooplankton fragments were major food sources for amphipods in the eelgrass bed. Isotopic mixing model calculations clearly showed an interspecific difference in diet composition. A high isotopic dissimilarity between amphipod taxa demonstrated interspecific trophic diversity, reflecting their herbivorous (G. japonicus and J. slatteryi) and omnivorous (P. rostrata and M. acherusicum) feeding habits and confirmed the detrivorous feeding habits of caprellids. Such trophic diversity at interspecific level of the amphipod species indicates that they use different food resources within their microhabitats and play species-specific functional roles as mediators in trophic pathways from producers to higher-level consumers of the eelgrass ecosystem. Finally, our findings suggest that information on the species-specific trophic ecology of amphipods is needed to better understand their potential role in the trophic dynamics and carbon flow of seagrass bed ecosystems.  相似文献

Average daily rations of 14, 35 or 58 mg Tubifex tubifex worm per gram of the fish Tilapia mossambica Peters represent maintenance, optimum or maximum feeding levels. At these levels, conversion efficiency (K 1) is 5,9 or 24%. An amount of 65 mg worm/g fish/day, when fed under experimental conditions, is converted with the poorest conversion efficiency (4%). Test individuals fed at 11 to 49 mg worm/g fish/day show a decreasing trend in water content (78.1 to 74.8%), and an increasing trend in fat content (32.1 to 44.2%). Below or above this feeding rate range, water content increases, while fat content decreases. The range of individual variations in fat content is nearly 3 times greater than that of ash and 15 times greater than that of water. Test individuals starved for 60 days lose 2.1 mg dry body weight/g/day. This loss is contributed by calorifically equivalent amounts of fat and protein. The endogenous loss of nitrogen by these individuals averaged 0.18 mg N/g body weight/day.  相似文献

Seven vital stains were mixed with fish muscle and fed to a sublittoral lysianassid (Orchomene sp. A collected in Scripps Canyon off La Jolla, California USA between August 1978 and August 1981) in the laboratory to test the utility of these dyes as feeding labels for scavenging amphipods. Fast-green FCF proved to be the most effective of the stains tested; >90% of starved amphipods fed fast-green-stained bait (Scomber japonicus muscle) for as little as 1 h exhibited a conspicuous green coloration along the digestive tract, which lasted an average of 35 d. The ability to label animals with such a single, short exposure interval makes this dye especially suitable for marking scavengers attracted to bait. Fast green efficiently stained this amphipod over a broad range of concentrations (1 to 8% by weight in water) and feeding regimes, and had no significant effects on survivorship or activity of laboratory-held organisms. Nile blue A also proved to be an acceptable feeding label for Orchomene sp. A for time scales of about 1 wk. Additional laboratory and field tests between August 1978 and August 1979 indicated that fast green is an effective feeding stain for 2 bathyal species (Orchomene sp. B and O. plebs from the Ross Sea, Antarctica) and 3 abyssal species (Eurythenes gryllus, O. gerulicorbis and Paralicella caperesca from the central North Pacific Ocean) of amphipods. Field labeling of amphipods at 5 800 m in the central North Pacific Ocean with fast green demonstrates that feeding stains may be used readily as in situ marking agents for population studies of scavengers in remote environments.  相似文献

The oxygen-binding properties of haemocyanins (Hc) from three species of gammaridean amphipods, Gammarus locusta (L.) (subtidal), Echinogammarus pirloti (Sexton and Spooner), (intertidal, marine) and E. marinus (Leach) (intertidal, estuarine), one species of hyalid amphipod Hyale nilsonni Rathke (high intertidal, marine) and the talitrid amphipod Orchestia gammarellus (Pallas) (semi-terrestrial) have been studied. All the species were collected from the Firth of Clyde, Scotland, during the spring of 1992. The oxygen-carrying capacity of haemolymph from each species was low, although variable, and was correlated with the low concentration of Hc present. The Hc oxygen-affinity of native gammarid haemolymph was relatively high [partial pressure of oxygen required for half-saturation, P50=4 to 5 torr (0.53 to 0.67 kPa)] at their respective in vivo pH values. At equivalent pH, however, Hc from G. locusta displayed a lower O2-affinity than either Echinogammarus species. Gammarid Hcs had a large Bohr effect ( log P50/ pH=-1.16 to-1.47). Resuspended Hc isolated from whole H. nilsonni showed similar O2-binding properties to those of the gammaridean amphipods [P50=6.3 torr (1.44 kPa) at pH=8.0; log P50/pH=-1.20]. Comparable data for haemolymph from O. gammarellus showed that the Hc had a lower affinity for O2 [P50=14.1 torr (1.87 kPa) at in vivo pH] and exhibited a more moderate Bohr effect ( log P50/ pH=-0.79). To eliminate the possibility that these differences were due to the different haemolymph constituents, each of the Hcs were pelleted and resuspended in physiological saline. The differences noted above persisted, demonstrating that they were due to inherent O2-binding properties of the Hc molecules themselves. An increase in L-lactate resulted in an increase in Hc oxygen-affinity for both Echinogammarus species but not for O. gammarellus. This study has confirmed that there is a clear difference between Hcs from aquatic and semi-terrestrial amphipod genera. The results lend further support to the hypothesis that the move on to land by amphipod crustaceans is accompanied by a decrease in Hc oxygen-affinity, a decrease in the Bohr effect and a decrease in effector (in this case L-lactate) sensitivity.  相似文献

Anchovy feeding activity (based on samples collected around the South African coast between 1986 and 1988) seems to peak twice daily, with the major peak between 17:00 and 19:00 hrs. Mean daily consumption in the field was estimated at 3.45% of body wt d-1. Since the various food types available to anchovy differ in their caloric values, this figure might be expected to vary according to the type of diet available to the fish. To obtain a diet energetically equivalent to that measured in the field anchovy feeding exclusively on phytoplankton would need to consume the equivalent of 5.8% of their body wt d-1 and those feeding on zooplankton 3.5 to 4.5% of the body wt, while fish feeding on their own eggs would require only 2.5% of their body wt daily. Feeding on eggs at peak spawning on the spawning grounds —where there is limited alternative food (i.e., zooplankton) available — seems adequate to support reproduction. In selection at the population level, cannibalistic fish benefit from homeostatic self-regulation.  相似文献

Allochthonous subsidies of organic material can profoundly influence population and community structure; however, the role of consumers in the processing of these inputs is less understood but may be closely linked to community and ecosystem function. Inputs of drift macrophytes subsidize sandy beach communities and food webs in many regions. We estimated feeding rates of dominant sandy beach consumers, the talitrid amphipods (Megalorchestia corniculata, in southern California, USA, and Talitrus saltator, in southern Galicia, Spain), and their impacts on drift macrophyte subsidies in field and laboratory experiments. Feeding rate varied with macrophyte type and, for T. saltator, air temperature. Size-specific feeding rates of talitrid amphipods were greatest on brown macroalgae (Macrocystis, Egregia, Saccorhiza and Fucus). Rates for large individuals of both species ranged from ∼40 mg wet wt individual−112 h−1 on brown macroalgae to negligible feeding by M. corniculata on a vascular plant (surfgrass). Amphipod growth rates were also greatest on Macrocystis and lowest on surfgrass, Phyllospadix. For a Californian beach with substantial inputs of macrophyte wrack (>70 kg wet wt m−1 month−1 in summer), we estimated that the population of talitrid amphipods could process an average of 55% of the palatable Macrocystis input. Our results indicate that talitrid amphipod populations can have a significant impact on drift macrophyte processing and fate and that the quantity and composition of drift macrophytes could, in turn, limit populations of beach consumers.  相似文献

Investigations have been made on the carotenoids in the marine amphipod Hyale perieri (Lucas) from the Black Sea. The presence of the carotenoids -carotene, canthaxanthin, lutein, neoxanthin and astaxanthin was determined by means of columnar and thin-layer chromatography. It is highly probable that violaxanthin is also present in H. perieri.  相似文献

An attempt was made for a comparative study of the mesozooplankton communities between the Aegean and Black Seas. These areas are in connected through the Sea of Marmara, the Bosporus and the Dardanelles straits. The comparison was mainly based on data collected both in coastal and offshore waters, by the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (Greece), the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology (Russia), the Institute of Biology of Southern Seas (Ukraine) and the Institute of Oceanology (Bulgaria). Our data revealed important differentiation in terms of species composition and interannual fluctuations of zooplankton quantity. Among the common copepod species, those presenting an eurytherm and/or euryhaline character (e.g. Acartia clausi, Paracalanus parvus, Penilia avirostris, Podon polyphemoides) were found dominant in the Black Sea and common in the Aegean Sea. Decreased dissimilarity of species composition seems to exist between the North Aegean Sea and the Black Sea, as well as between the coastal areas of the Black Sea and those affected by pollution in the Aegean Sea. A common feature of both seas is the existence of spatial differentiation in terms of the quantity of zooplankters due to anthropogenic and/or natural influences. The pattern of this differentiation seems to vary interannually in the Black Sea, depending either on the abundance of mesozooplankton predators (indigenous or invasive species) or on global climatic changes. Although the Black Sea is generally richer in zooplankton than the Aegean Sea, the significant decrease in the quantity of zooplankton from the early 1980s to the mid-1990s, due to the above factors, resulted in quasi-similar values in both areas. Black Sea mesozooplankton has revealed strong interannual variability both quantitatively and qualitatively, whereas no significant variability was detected in the Aegean Sea. This difference could be attributed both to variant anthropogenic forcing on these ecosystems and to the sensitive character of the semi-enclosed Black Sea.Communicated by M.E. Hemoglobin content of 3 Nile fishes — Tilapia nilotica Linnaeus, Lates niloticus Linnaeus and Labeo niloticus Forskal— were examined. Clear differences in hemoglobin and hematocrit values were observed, and seasonal variation in the hemoglobin content of Lates niloticus and Labeo niloticus were noticed. There is a correlation between hematocrit value and hemoglobin content of the 3 species examined. The chloride content is higher in the species with lower hemoglobin content.  相似文献
