Food availability is expected to influence the relative cost of different mating tactics, but little attention has been paid
to this potential source of adaptive geographic variation in behavior. Associations between the frequency of different mating
tactics and resource availability could arise because tactic use responds directly to food intake (phenotypic plasticity),
because populations exposed to different average levels of food availability have diverged genetically in tactic use, or both.
Different populations of guppies (Poecilia reticulata) in Trinidad experience different average levels of food availability. We combined field observations with laboratory “common
garden” and diet experiments to examine how this environmental gradient has influenced the evolution of male mating tactics.
Three independent components of variation in male behavior were found in the field: courtship versus foraging, dominance interactions,
and interference competition versus searching for mates. Compared with low-food-availability sites, males at high-food-availability
sites devoted more effort to interference competition. This difference disappeared in the common garden experiment, which
suggests that it was caused by phenotypic plasticity and not genetic divergence. In the diet experiment, interference competition
was more frequent and intense among males raised on the greater of two food levels, but this was only true for fish descended
from sites with low food availability. Thus, the association between interference competition and food availability in the
field can be attributed to a genetically variable norm of reaction. Genetically variable norms of reaction with respect to
food intake were found for the other two behavioral components as well and are discussed in relation to the patterns observed
in the field. Our results indicate that food availability gradients are an important, albeit complex, source of geographic

Social structure and co-operative interactions in a wild population of guppies (Poecilia reticulata)

In contrast to the substantial number of theoretical papers that have examined the mechanisms by which cooperation may evolve,
very few studies have investigated patterns of co-operation in natural animal populations. In the current study, we use a
novel approach, social network analysis, to investigate the structure of co-operative interactions in the context of predator
inspection in a wild population of guppies (Poecilia reticulata). Female guppies showed social preferences for stable partners, fulfilling a key assumption made by models of reciprocity.
In the laboratory, wild female guppies disproportionately engaged in predator inspection with others with whom they had strong
social associations. Furthermore, pairs of fish that frequently engaged in predator inspection did so in a particularly co-operative
way, potentially reducing costs associated with predator inspection. Taken together, these results provide evidence for assortative
interactions forming the basis of co-operation during predator inspection in a natural fish population. The occurrence of
highly interconnected social networks between stable partners suggests the existence of co-operation networks in free-ranging

We investigated male mate preferences in relation to the perceived risk of sperm competition in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata), a freshwater fish with a promiscuous mating system. Our laboratory experiments revealed that male mate choice behaviour is not influenced by the presence of rival males that are merely in close proximity to a potential mate, as there was no significant difference in the amount of time that males spent with females that were recently either alone or in close proximity to four rival males. Male mate choice behaviour was, however, strongly influenced by the presence of rival males in a second experiment, where those rivals were permitted to copulate with one of the females. In that situation, males spent significantly more time with, and directed significantly more sigmoid courtship displays toward, females that they had recently seen alone compared to females they had seen receiving forced copulations from up to four rival males. Our results therefore indicate that male guppies are sensitive to the risk of sperm competition and alter their mate choice behaviour in an adaptive fashion.Communicated by K. Lindström 相似文献

Evidence from a number of freshwater species indicates that fish prefer to school with familiar individuals. Do they also choose to associate with kin? Our experiment tested this idea using the Trinidadian guppy, Poecilia reticulata, a species whose reproductive biology favours the association of kin groups. Juveniles reared together were able to recognise one another on the basis of either visual or chemical cues, but showed no preference for schooling with unfamiliar kin. We therefore conclude that any naturally occurring kin groups in this species will occur as a result of familiarity rather than as a consequence of kin recognition based on phenotype matching. 相似文献

Group living in fish can provide benefits of protection from predators and some parasites, more efficient foraging for food, increased mating opportunities and enhanced energetic benefit when swimming. For riverine species, shoaling behaviour can be influenced by various environmental stressors, yet little is known how flow rate might influence the shoaling of diseased fish shoals. In view of the increasingly unpredictable flow rates in streams and rivers, this study aimed to assess the combined effect of flow condition and parasitism on the shoaling behaviour of a model fish species. Shoal size, shoal cohesion and time spent shoaling of female guppies Poecilia reticulata were compared when infected with the directly transmitted ectoparasite Gyrodactylus turnbulli under flow and static conditions. Flow condition was an important factor in influencing shoaling behaviour of guppies with the fish forming larger shoals in the absence of flow. When a shoal member was infected with G. turnbulli, shoal cohesion was reduced, but the magnitude of this effect was dependent on flow condition. In both flow and static conditions, bigger fish formed larger shoals than smaller counterparts. Future changes to stream hydrology with more frequent flooding and drought events will affect the shoaling tendency of fish. During high-flow events, diseased fish may not be able to keep up with shoal mates and therefore have a higher risk of predation. Additionally, these findings may be important for aquaria and farmed species where an increase in flow rate may reduce aggregation in fish. 相似文献

Summary Experiments were designed to determine the effects of male pigmentation patterns on female choice in guppies. When presented with a series of variably-colored males, females of different genetic strain consistently exhibited similar preferences (Tables 1 and 2), preferring those males with the greatest development of both carotenoid and iridescent pigments (Table 3). A partial rank correlation analysis of pigments of males indicates positive correlations between the iridescent and carotenoid pigments and also between melanins and showiness (Table 4). Only when either the carotenoid or iridescent pigments were held constant was there any effect of the other pigments on the ranking order of males by the females. Other pigments appear to be relatively unimportant in influencing female choice of males. These results indicate that females discriminate among males on the basis of color and that females of different strains prefer the same male colors rather than those characteristics of males of their own strain. The results support those models of sexual selection that hold that sexually selected traits honestly advertise the phenotypic and genetic qualities of males; they do not support models of runaway selection for particular male traits, such as first proposed by Fisher (1930). 相似文献

Summary Mate choice cues in sage grouse were reinvestigated by analyzing relationships between male mating success and a range of suggested cues. Display cues were implicated by significant relationships between mating status (whether or not a male mated) and lek attendance, display rate (corrected for effects of female proximity and time of day) and an acoustic component related to temporal and frequency measure of a whistle emltted during the strut display. Although display rate and the acoustic component were intercorrelated, both exerted significant partial effects on mating success in mutivariate analyses. These display measures also differed significantly between males. In contrast, mating success was not significantly related to measures of territory characteristics, including size and proximity to the lek center, or to body size. These results resolve discrepancies between previous studies and provide a basis for experimental analysis of the role of female choice in this lek system. 相似文献

Summary Populations of the Trinidad guppy range from areas with high levels of predation by other species of fish to areas with little or no piscine predation. Previous studies have shown that variation among populations in male coloration can be explained by a balance between female preference for brighter males and natural selection against bright males. High levels of male courtship activity may also increase both predation risk and mating success. Therefore, in high-predation areas, females that mate with males that court frequently as well as those that choose bright males would presumably produce male offspring with low survivorship. Consistent with this variation in natural selection, we observed that females from high-predation populations were less likely to choose bright and frequently courting males than females from low-predation populations. This result supports the hypothesis that female preference is evolving as a character genetically correlated with the preferred male character, in which case higher levels of natural selection acting against the male character should be related to lower levels of female preference. 相似文献

Body size is clearly an important factor influencing the outcome of agonistic contests, but is often weakly correlated with dominance ranks in Zorotypus gurneyi Choe (Insecta: Zoraptera). The study of the development and dynamics of dominance relations using artificially constructed colonies show that age, or tenure within the colony, is the prime determinant of dominance among males. Dominance hierarchies become relatively stable within 2 or 3 days and males that emerge later normally begin at the bottom of the hierarchy regardless of size. Males interact much more frequently when they are simultaneously introduced to each other than when they are allowed to emerge at different times. In the latter case, males that emerge late appear to recognize relative dominance of older males and avoid direct contests. Considering the high correlation between dominance rank and mating success, there is a strong selective advantage to males that emerge earlier and such pressure of sexual selection may be responsible for the difference in life history strategies between Z. gurneyi and its sympatric congener, Z. barberi Gurney, in central Panama. 相似文献

Summary Social behavior of a species in the little-known insect order Zoraptera is described for the first time. Zorotypus gurneyi Choe (Insecta: Zoraptera) is a wing-dimorphic species that lives colonially under the bark of rotting logs in central Panama. Males are larger than females in total body size and fight each other to gain access to females. Highly linear and stable dominance hierarchies exist among males. Higher-ranking males show such agonistic behavior as jerking, chasing, head-butting, hindleg-kicking, and grappling, whereas subordinates often try to avoid contacts. Higher-ranking males, the dominant males in particular, are well recognized by others and relatively free of injuries. Although the dominant males are often the largest, the correlation between body size and dominance rank is not always significant. The mating system of Z. gurneyi is an example of female defense polygyny in which the dominant males obtain the majority of matings (75% on average). Mating success among Z. gurneyi males is much more variable than that of some lekking species. 相似文献

Three trace heavy metals viz., nickel, copper and zinc were studied for their toxic action against Poecilia retriculata (Peters). Among these, copper was found to be most active followed by zinc and nickel. Accumulations of these metals as well as behavioural studies were carried out after exposing fish to sub-lethal concentration of LC20. It was found that the highest quantity of nickel was accumulated in the fish body followed by zinc and copper. After exposure to sub-lethal concentration of metals some behavioural changes in fish were observed due to stress, such as mucus like secretion over gills, excessive excretion, anoretic condition and increased distance between gills and operculum. In all the cases fin movement was observed. Role and use of such changes as biological indicators or as biological early warning system in water quality assessment has been discussed. 相似文献

Male guppies, Poecilia reticulata, have color patterns that result from a balance between natural selection for crypsis to avoid predators and sexual selection
for bright, complex patterns that attract females. Males use displays to show off these patterns to potential mates, but their
conspicuousness also depends on the light environment in which they are viewed. We investigated variation in natural underwater
guppy light environments in Trinidad, West Indies, and found that mating behavior is correlated with both the ‘quantity’ (total
irradiance) and ‘quality’ (spectral composition) of light: light intensity and the proportion of ultraviolet light were negatively
related to display rates. Experimental manipulation of light environment to mimic natural daily changes demonstrated that
these relationships are causal and are independent of time of day effects. At lower light levels, when guppies are less detectable
by visually hunting predators, females had more opportunity for active mate choice, because males displayed more. However,
these light conditions may reduce the ability of females to accurately discriminate between males. Guppy mating behavior is
therefore strongly affected by light environment, and this may have important effects on sexual selection. 相似文献

We used data from a long-term study (15 years) of fallow deer to report for the first time the lifetime mating success, overall
variance in lifetime mating success, and age-specific mortality levels of males. Fallow bucks that gain matings have higher
social dominance rank, higher rates of fighting, and invest more in vocal display during the breeding season than unsuccessful
males. Therefore, we examined if mating was associated with trade-offs in terms of survival, lifespan, and mating potential.
We found that the variance in lifetime mating success was very high: 34 (10.7%) males mated, and of those, the 10 most successful
males gained 73% of all matings (n=934). Mortality rates were generally high and only 22.3% (71/318) of males reached social maturity, i.e., 4 years. The oldest
male was 13 years old. We found that fallow bucks that mated were not more likely to die during the following year, did not
suffer from a reduction in lifespan, and did not incur lower mating success later in life as a result of mating during the
early years of social maturity. Our results show that mating males at age 5 years (and possibly 9 years) may be more likely
to survive than non-mating males. Additionally, the number of matings gained by males during the first years of social maturity
was positively correlated with lifespan. We suggest that mating males are of higher quality than non-mating males because
they are not more likely to incur trade-offs as a result of their increased reproductive efforts.

Sexual selection in a monomorphic lek-breeding bird: correlates of male mating success in the great snipe Gallinago media 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary In the lek-breeding great snipe, male morphology, behaviour, and territory features were recorded for individually marked birds on two adjacent leks. Partial correlation sshowed that male mating success, expressed as the number of female solicitations and copulations, was negatively correlated with the distance of a display territory to the lek center and positively correlated with the number of displays per unit time given by a male. No other variables were directly correlated with male matin success. Thus, central males obtain more matings than peripheral males and successful males display more per unit time than do less successful males, independently of position on the lek. Central males were found to be older than peripheral ones and were present more often on the lek. Furthermore, central males had a larger number of white tail feathers, which are usea as visual signals in the displays, but this may be explained by the fact that these males were older. It is suggested that male great snipe are subject to sexual selection mainly in behavioural and vocal cues and that this may explain the absence of size and plumage dimorphism in this species. 相似文献

Summary During the pre-laying and laying stages of the breeding cycle, female sand martins are guarded by their mates and chased by other males seeking promiscuous copulations. Because females become exceptionally heavy when they are most likely to be fertile, their increased mass was thought to present cues during flight to males seeking promiscuous copulations. Heavy female sand martins released from the hand were selectively chased in sexual chases (Figs. 1, 2). Breeding females were heaviest during laying and pre-laying (Fig. 3), exceeding any masses normally achieved by breeding males (Fig. 3). A sample of naturally heavy females and birds whose mass had been experimentally increased to that of laying and prelaying females took longer to reach ascending flight, as determined by analysis of video recordings, than a sample of lighter birds (Table 1). It was concluded that this and other flight cues may be detected by males so that they may achieve extra-pair copulations and hence increase their reproductive success. 相似文献

Summary We investigated factors affecting annual mating success (MS) and reproductive success (RS) of spotted sandpipers (Actitis macularia) from 13 years of a 17-year study at Little Pelican Island, Leech Lake, Minnesota. Analyses were restricted to ages 1–3. Mean annual female MS varied from 1.3 to 2.7 mates, and the MS pattern was indistinguishable from random. However, female MS increased with age and was affected by arrival date, territory size, and beach size. Female RS also increased with age, and number of mates and year effects were the most significant explanatory variables in each age. Older female RS was increased by priority on a territory and presence of a previous mate. Territory size and beach size varied with population density and did not predictably affect RS. The strong year affect on RS was associated with annual variation in sex ratio and predation. Males produce only one successful clutch per year, so MS greater than one is a result of nest loss and does not increase RS. Neither male MS nor RS changed with age. Male reproductive failure rate varied by year. Given that a male produced young, the degree of RS was affected by year, arrival date, priority on a territory, territory size, and beach size. In years with early-season predation, late arrivals had higher RS; territory and beach size effects varied by year. Neither the presence, nor degree, of female care was associated with male RS. Male RS was more subject to annual environmental variability than was female RS, probably because of relatively low annual potential RS among males.Offprint requests to: L.W. The effect of two components of male courtship, color and display behavior, on female choice of mates was investigated in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata). Computer-modified videos were constructed to determine the relative importance of a static trait, the presence or absence of carotenoid pigment (C and NC), and a dynamic trait, high and low display rate (HD and LD), on female response. Females were given a choice between all combinations of male display and color in a binary choice design. Preference was determined by the time females spent visually inspecting the animation. Females preferred animations with high display rates when both animations displayed color (CHD vs CLD), but not in the absence of color (NCHD vs NCLD). Equal numbers of females chose the color/low-display animation and the no-color/high-display animation when the two were paired. Conversely, color became a criterion of choice when both animations showed a low display rate (CLD vs NCLD), but not when both displayed at a high rate (CHD vs NCHD). These results suggest that females use both static and dynamic traits to evaluate males, but their rankings are affected by the choices available. Summary One well-known solution to the iterated Prisoner's Dilemma is the TIT FOR TAT strategy. This strategy has three characteristics associated with it. TIT FOR TAT is nice (cooperates on the first move of a game), retaliatory (plays defect against an individual that defected on the prior move), and forgiving (cooperates with an individual which has defected in the past but cooperates in the present). Predator inspection behavior in guppies (Poecilia reticulata) was examined in order to determine whether guppies displayed these three characteristics. Results indicate that while it can be quite difficult to translate the abstract concepts of niceness, retaliation, and forgiveness into measurable behaviors, the data support the hypothesis that guppies display the three characteristics associated with the TIT FOR TAT strategy.The selfish herd and dilution effect are discussed as possible alternative explanations for the observed behavior. These hypotheses alone were insufficient to explain the results. 相似文献
