Relationships between social status and levels of body reserves stored by members of greenfinch (Carduelis chloris) flocks in winter were investigated. In addition, the adjustment of reserves by birds of different rank to experimental changes
in food predictability and to changed weather conditions were examined. Birds with low social status carried overall larger
body reserves than high-ranked birds. The results of the experiments suggest that this was mainly because subordinates, due
to their low priority to food access, perceived future foraging success as less predictable than dominants. In response to
severe weather, which probably increased the risk of starvation for birds, dominants temporarily increased their reserves
more than subordinates. This response also indicated that birds with low social status carried larger reserves than high-ranked
birds, and demonstrated that dominants could increase food intake when there was a risk of energetic shortfall. The results
suggest that fattening strategies in greenfinches depend on social status. In winter, subordinates may be forced to carry
larger reserves than dominants to safeguard against social constraints in access to food during critical times. As body reserves
may be costly to carry and acquire, this should reduce the probability of surviving the winter for subordinates compared to
dominants.

The primary cue for initiation of spring migratory restlessness (Zugunruhe) in landbird migrants is photoperiod. Gonadal hormones are known to have a role in the regulation of migratory disposition; however, the extent of their effect is not well understood. We examined the impact of exogenous testosterone on the onset of migratory restlessness in gray catbirds (Dumetella carolinensis). Catbirds were stratified by sex and randomly assigned to two rooms; individuals in one room were photoadvanced to initiate migratory restlessness and the other room was maintained on a 12:12 light/dark photoperiod. Each room had three groups (n?=?10/group); males with testosterone implants, males with empty implants, and females. We predicted that in the photoadvanced room males with testosterone implants would initiate migratory activity earlier than empty-implanted males. We found that in the photoadvanced group, testosterone-implanted males initiated migration 2 weeks prior to empty-implanted males, and 3 weeks prior to females. In the non-photoadvanced males, the testosterone-implanted males initiated migration at the same time as the corresponding group in the photoadvanced room, while the empty-implanted males and females did not exhibit Zugunruhe. Our results illustrate that elevated testosterone can advance the onset of Zugunruhe, even in the absence of an extended photoperiod. Additionally, the onset of migratory restlessness observed in the photoadvanced, non-testosterone-implanted males and females further supports the importance of photoperiod as a cue for migratory restlessness. An interesting observation was the intersexual differences in the onset of migratory activity in gray catbirds, a species not previously known to exhibit protandry. 相似文献

Many birds and mammals store energy as hoarded food supplies. A supply of stored food is beneficial during periods when food is scarce, but building up and managing such a supply also entails costs. The optimal number of caches will be reached when the net benefit is at its maximum. If dominants can steal more stored food from subordinates than the other way around, the optimum will differ between these categories. A previous theoretical model of hoarding in groups with dominant and subordinate members produced three testable predictions: (1) hoarders should store more food as anticipated future conditions get worse; (2) subordinate flock members should store more food than dominants; and (3) dominants should increase hoarding relatively more than subordinates as conditions get worse. Here we present a field experiment on willow tits (Parus montanus) designed to test these predictions. We found support for all three. Hoarding increased as conditions got worse, subordinates stored at a higher rate than dominants, and dominants increased their hoarding effort relatively more than subordinates as conditions worsened. These results support the incorporation of information on dominance and food availability into models predicting food storage behaviour.Communciated by J. Dickinson 相似文献

We examined the relationship between plasma levels of corticosterone and the migratory activity and directional preference of red-eyed vireos during fall migration at the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Corticosterone is thought to play a role in physiological and behavioural processes before, during, and after long-distance migratory flights. An increase in corticosterone at the onset of migratory flights can be expected in birds that are energetically prepared to migrate in a seasonally appropriate southerly direction. Red-eyed vireos ( Vireo olivaceus) were tested in orientation cages under clear twilight skies. Just prior to the orientation experiments, blood was sampled to assay baseline corticosterone levels. Average corticosterone level for all birds was 22.8 ng/ml. Red-eyed vireos with higher than average baseline levels of corticosterone were significantly more active in orientation cages compared to birds with lower levels of corticosterone. Moreover, birds with higher than average levels oriented in a southwesterly direction, which is consistent with a trans-Gulf flight, whereas individuals with levels below average showed a NNW mean direction. Although there was no significant difference in baseline levels of corticosterone between fat and lean birds, individual mass loss between capture and test was negatively correlated with corticosterone levels. Results from this study clearly demonstrate that corticosterone influences departure decisions and the choice of direction during migration. 相似文献

Recently, we demonstrated that the highest densities of fruit pulp are located in the uppermost zones of tree crowns. Since
heterogeneous distributions of depletable food is theorized to foster contest competition, we tested three hypotheses involving
rank differences among species of arboreal frugivores: (1) In the absence of competitors, species tend to feed in higher strata
of tree crowns; (2) interspecific contest competition occurs through monopolization and usurpation of feeding sites in these
higher strata; and (3) subordinate species decrease their feeding height and ingestion rate when dominants enter the food
patch. To test these hypotheses, we observed chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), red-tailed monkeys (Cercopithecus ascanius), blue monkeys (Cercopithecus mitis), and gray-cheeked mangabeys (Lophocebus albigena) in Kibale National Park, Uganda. We found that: (1) all four primates fed preferentially in upper tree crowns when alone,
(2) dominant species monopolized and aggressively usurped the upper crown when co-feeding with subordinates and the latter
retreated below the middle of tree crowns, (3) in the presence of dominant species, subordinate species showed lower standardized
feeding height and modified their food intake rates, while dominants were not affected by the subordinate species, (4) subordinates
moved down at the arrival of and up at the departure of dominants, and (5) the presence of folivores in the tree did not affect
the feeding height of a frugivore, even through folivores were socially dominant. Contrary to expectations, we found that
red-tailed monkeys decreased their movements between successive fruits that they ate in the presence of blue monkeys compared
to when they were feeding alone, perhaps to avoid disturbing dominants and attracting aggression or because they ingested
more semi-ripe and green unripe fruits, i.e., more food of lower quality. 相似文献

We studied the behavior of 13 radiotagged cranes dispersing from a communal roost over days when they changed their main
daily foraging area between consecutive days during two winter seasons. Individuals went to a new foraging zone when on the
previous day their morning food intake had fallen below their mean morning food intake measured over the whole winter. Food
intake on the day before a change in foraging area was positively correlated with dominance rank. Dominant cranes changed
to new zones with higher numbers of birds and food density, while subordinate cranes went to new zones with lower numbers
of birds. As a result, all birds increased their food intake over that of the previous day. Dominant cranes remained more
faithful to their most preferred foraging zone, where they spent 69% of the mornings, while subordinate birds were more mobile,
switching among zones frequently. Dominant birds left the roost later than subordinate birds on the days they changed to a
new zone, which could be used to track the main departing flows. The results suggest that the dynamics that led to a truncated
phenotype-limited distribution were determined by social dominance and food abundance, with dominant cranes shifting to a
new zone to maintain their high intake levels and subordinates changing more frequently whenever their daily intake did not
reach the minimum metabolic requirements.

The relationship between social dominance, subcutaneous fat,and annual survival in wintering white-throated sparrows (Zonotrichia albicollis) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary We used multivariate analysis to identify factors correlated with level of subcutaneous fat (a form of stored energy) in a migratory, wintering population of white-throated sparrows. Dominant birds, residents from previous years, and birds residing in certain regions of the study area tended to have high mean fat levels during January and February. On the basis of differences in levels of fat, dominant prior residents could probably survive 50% longer without food than subordinate newcomers. An additional analysis revealed that dominant sparrows returned more frequently to the study area than subordinates, a result that might indicate higher survival.

How and when migrants integrate directional information from different sources may depend not only on the bird’s internal
state, including fat stores, but also on the ecological context during passage. We designed experiments to (1) examine the
influence of stored fat on the decision to migrate and on the choice of migratory direction and (2) investigate how the integration
of orientation cue information is tied to energetic status in relation to migration across an ecological barrier. Migratory
orientation of red-eyed vireos (Vireo olivaceus) at twilight was recorded using two different techniques, orientation cage experiments and free-flight release tests, during
both fall and spring migration. During fall migration, the amount of stored fat proved decisive for directional selections
of the vireos. Fat birds chose directions in accordance with migration across the Gulf of Mexico. Lean birds oriented either
parallel to the coast line (cage tests) or moved inland (free-flight releases). Whereas only fat birds showed significant
responses to experimental deflections of the geomagnetic field, lean birds displayed a tendency to shift their activity in
the expected direction, making it difficult to evaluate the prediction that use of the magnetic compass is context dependent.
Fat loads also had a significant effect on the decision to migrate, i.e., fat individuals were more likely to embark on migration
than were lean birds (true for both cage and release experiments). During spring migration, a majority of experimental subjects
were classified as lean, following their arrival after crossing the Gulf of Mexico, and oriented in seasonally appropriate
directions. The vireos also showed significant responses to experimental deflections of the geomagnetic field regardless of
their energetic status. Free-flight release experiments during spring migration revealed a significant difference in mean
directions between clear sky and overcast tests. The difference may indicate a compensatory response to wind drift or possibly
a need for celestial cues to calibrate the magnetic compass. Finally, this is the first demonstration of magnetic compass
orientation in a North American vireo.

The risk of predation may influence the acquisition of energy and the feeding activity of animals. Feeding activity and body
reserves of wintering great tits Parus major in response to the priority to food access were studied in two areas differing in incidence of predators. The one-predator
area contained sparrowhawks Accipiter nisus only, whereas the two-predator area contained both sparrowhawks and pygmy owls Glaucidium passerinum, whose hunting periods overlap at dawn and dusk. In the two-predator area dominant great tits arrived at feeders significantly
later in the morning, and left earlier in the evening, than their subordinate flock-mates. Hence, feeding day length of dominants
was found to be significantly shorter. The reverse was true for the one-predator area. In addition, dominants carried significantly
greater reserves than subordinates in the area inhabited by two predators. Factors constraining subcutaneous energy reserves
were also studied in removal experiments. After the removal of dominant individuals, subordinate great tits did not reduce
their body reserves in the two predator area. In contrast, subordinate great tits significantly reduced evening body reserves
in the single-predator area. I concluded that the presence of the two predators increases unpredictability in feeding conditions
for great tits. Dominant individuals responded to this by shortening their feeding day and increasing body reserves at dusk.

Tug-of-war over reproduction in a cooperatively breeding cichlid 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In group-living animals, dominants may suppress subordinate reproduction directly and indirectly, thereby skewing reproduction
in their favour. In this study, we show experimentally that this ability (‘power’) is influenced by resource distribution
and the body size difference between unrelated dominants and subordinates in the cichlid Neolamprologus pulcher. Reproduction was strongly skewed towards the dominant female, due to these females producing more and larger clutches and
those clutches surviving egg eating better than those of subordinate females, but was not so when subordinates defended a
patch. If breeding shelters were provided in two patches, subordinate females were more likely to exclusively defend a patch
against the dominant female and breed, compared to when the same breeding resource was provided in one patch. Relatively large
subordinate females were more likely to defend a patch and reproduce. Females also directly interfered with each other’s reproduction
by eating the competitors’ eggs, at which dominants were more successful. Although dominant females benefited from subordinate
females due to alloparental care and an increase in egg mass, they also showed costs due to reduced growth in the presence
of subordinates. The results support the view that the dominant’s power to control subordinate reproduction determines reproductive
partitioning, in agreement with the predictions from tug-of-war models of reproductive skew. 相似文献

Recent experiments exposing migratory birds to altered magnetic fields simulating geographical displacements have shown that
the geomagnetic field acts as an external cue affecting migratory fuelling behaviour. This is the first study investigating
fuel deposition in relation to geomagnetic cues in long-distance migrants using the western passage of the Mediterranean region.
Juvenile wheatears (Oenanthe oenanthe) were exposed to a magnetically simulated autumn migration from southern Sweden to West Africa. Birds displaced parallel
to the west of their natural migration route, simulating an unnatural flight over the Atlantic Ocean, increased their fuel
deposition compared to birds experiencing a simulated migration along the natural route. These birds, on the other hand, showed
relatively low fuel loads in agreement with earlier data on wheatears trapped during stopover. The experimental displacement
to the west, corresponding to novel sites in the Atlantic Ocean, led to a simulated longer distance to the wintering area,
probably explaining the observed larger fuel loads. Our data verify previous results suggesting that migratory birds use geomagnetic
cues for fuelling decisions and, for the first time, show that birds, on their first migration, can use geomagnetic cues to
compensate for a displacement outside their normal migratory route, by adjusting fuel deposition. 相似文献

Summary A partially migratory population of European blackbirds Turdus merula was studied in central Europe during the non-breeding season. Body weight and the amount of subcutaneous fat deposits showed seasonal variations typical for each age and sex category. Juveniles were fattest in autumn and spring and both juveniles and females lost fat and body weight in mid-winter. Adults and males reached their maximum body weight in mid-winter. These findings together with data from Schwabl (1983) suggest that juveniles and females constitute the main fraction of those birds migrating from the area in autumn. In winter mainly adults and males have access to food resources. These patterns may be regulated by dominance behaviour, since adults and males are usually dominant over juveniles and females throughout the non-breeding season. Subordinate birds that stay in the area probably suffer from a higher winter mortality but have the advantage of early breeding. 相似文献

It has been argued that the body mass levels achieved by birds are determined by the trade-off between risks of starvation
and predation. Birds have also been found to reduce body mass in response to an increased predation risk. During migration,
the need of extra fuel for flights is obvious and crucial. In this study, migratory blackcaps (Sylvia atricapilla) were subject to an experimental stopover situation where the predation risk was manipulated by exposure to a stuffed predator.
Blackcaps that perceived an imminent risk of predation increased their food intake and fuel deposition rate during the first
period of stopover compared with a control group. The pattern of night activity indicates that birds that were exposed to
the predator also chose to leave earlier than birds in the control group. Since there was no cover present at the stopover
site, birds might have perceived the risk of predation as higher regardless of whether they were foraging or not. Under such
circumstances it has been predicted that birds should increase their foraging activity. The findings in this study clearly
indicate that birds are able to adjust their stopover behaviour to perceived predation risk.

We examined the effects of nectar availability and competition on foraging preferences and revisit intervals of traplining female purple-throated caribs hummingbirds (Eulampis jugularis) to Heliconia patches shared by two individuals or visited solely by one individual. Birds at both shared and solitary patches preferred multiflowered to single-flowered inflorescences, but the magnitude of this preference depended on food availability and competition. During a year of low flower availability, females visited multiflowered inflorescences more frequently than single-flowered inflorescences only when nectar availability was experimentally enhanced; similarly, females at shared patches exhibited a significant preference for multiflowered inflorescences only after experimental increases in nectar availability. Experimental manipulations of nectar availability also had different effects on revisit intervals of birds at shared vs solitary patches. Birds at shared patches responded to patch-wide increases in nectar rewards by increasing the duration of their visit intervals, whereas birds at solitary patches did not. In contrast, birds at solitary patches responded to abrupt losses of nectar at flowers (simulating competition) by decreasing the duration of their visit intervals, whereas a bird at a shared patch did not alter its return interval. The contrasting results between shared vs solitary patches suggest that future studies of traplining behavior should incorporate levels of competition into their design. 相似文献

Dominance status influences the fitness of many mammals. Using African striped mice Rhabdomys pumilio, we tested whether (1) dominant females have greater reproductive success than subordinate females, (2) dominant females
influence the reproductive output of subordinate females when they are housed in close proximity, (3) reproductive output
of a female changes in response to the dominance status of her neighbours, and (4) whether prolonged association between individuals
influences the variance in reproductive success between dominants and subordinates (i.e. the ‘dear enemy’ phenomenon). The
size and mass of litters of dominants increased significantly when housed adjacent to subordinates than when housed apart.
The litter size and mass of subordinates remained unchanged, although subordinates spent significantly more time with their
pups when housed close to dominants than when housed apart; time spent with pups by dominants remained unchanged. Moreover,
females modified their reproductive output and behaviour in relation to the dominance status of their neighbours. Following
prolonged association, dominants still had greater reproductive success, but now, the time spent with pups decreased in subordinates.
We suggest that dominants adopt a strategy to increase the reproductive value of their litter, whereas subordinates adopt
a pup defence strategy. These strategies are flexible and are influenced by the dominance status and period of association
between neighbours, so that females could maximize their fitness in response to varying social conditions. 相似文献

Costs of switching social groups for dominant and subordinate dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Daniel A. Cristoll 《Behavioral ecology and sociobiology》1995,37(2):93-101
I quantified the costs of switching from a familiar to an unfamiliar flock for captive dark-eyed juncos (Junco h. hyemalis) by measuring several physiological and behavioral variables before and after flock switching. Birds that were initially dominant dropped in status in unfamiliar flocks, and experienced increased metabolic rates, while subordinate birds appeared to undergo less physiological change when switching flocks. This difference occurred despite a lack of any rank-related differences in the effects of joining a new flock on rates of aggression, weight change, access to food, or plasma corticosterone levels. These results suggest that for dominant, but not subordinate, individuals there is a measurable metabolic cost to joining a new social group, even in the absence of adverse factors such as food limitation. Dominant individuals may be less likely than subordinates to leave familiar flocks because of their higher metabolic costs when joining a new social group. 相似文献

The orientation of two closely related subspecies of Australian silvereye Zosterops lateralis was studied in captivity over 14 months. Migratory silvereyes Z. lateralis lateralis showed significant directional preferences during the spring and autumn migration periods and also displayed orientated behaviour during the breeding period. In contrast, the non-migratory subspecies Z. lateralis familiaris did not display any significant directional preferences at any time. This is the first time that the orientation behaviour of a migratory and non-migratory subspecies has been compared over the duration of an annual cycle, both during and outside the migratory periods. The results suggest that migratory silvereyes possess an endogenous program determining the timing and direction of autumn and spring migration and that this program is unique to the migratory subspecies. This is also the first comparison of this nature on southern hemisphere birds and demonstrates that the migratory behaviour of southern hemisphere migrants may be more similar to that of northern hemisphere migrants than previously thought.Submitted to Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology: 23 Jan 2006. 相似文献

Adult tautog Tautoga onitis, a marine temperate-water labrid, migrate each fall from inshore summering grounds to offshore overwintering sites. In a previous laboratory study, when adults were held under natural fall-winter cycles of temperature and photoperiod, changes in behavior, indicative of migration, occurred at the same time as their fall migration in nature. In the present study when fish were held under natural photoperiod in summer but with decreasing fall-winter temperature, while highly variable and transient components of migratory behavior were observed, no sustained trend was evident. Then, in the fall, under a naturally changing photoperiod but at simulated summer temperature, no trace of migratory behavior was observed. These findings indicate that temperature appears to play a leading role in triggering the fall migration of the species. The significance of these results and their ecological implications is discussed. 相似文献

Extensive ringing data from a coastal site (Falsterbo Bird Observatory) in southwesternmost Sweden were used to investigate
the occurrence of reverse autumn migration among 20 passerine bird species of widely different migration categories. The data
demonstrate that reverse migration is a widespread and regular phenomenon among nocturnal as well as diurnal migrants and
among irruptive migrants, temperate zone migrants, and long-distance migrants destined for tropical winter quarters. The reoriented
movements were directed approximately opposite to the normal migration direction, i.e. between NNW and ENE from the coast
and towards inland. Median distances of reverse movements varied between 9 and 65 km. Some individuals of irruptive and partial
migrants settled to winter in the reverse direction. Bird species with relatively small fat reserves at capture were more
likely to perform reverse migratory movements than species with larger fat deposits. In two species birds performing forward
migration were significantly heavier within 10 days after capture than individuals performing reverse movements. The reoriented
movements probably are of adaptive significance for birds confronted with the sea and pre-disposed to refuelling during migration.
A bimodal orientation mechanism will bring the birds from an area with high competition for food and high predation risk to
more suitable resting and feeding grounds before resuming migration in the forward direction and crossing the barrier.
