Field manipulations in a Maine, USA intertidal mud flat showed that Nereis virens adults were an important factor in regulating the abundance of Corophium volutator, an amphipod which comprised 63% of the total number of individuals in the benthic community. Removal of N. virens adults resulted in an increase in C. volutator abundance, while addition of N. virens adults led to a decrease. There was a significant negative correlation between the abundance of N. virens adults and that of C. volutator. C. volutator was also negatively correlated with the density of all the other infaunal species combined. These results suggest that there is at least a 3-level interactive system (N. virens —C. volutator — other infaunal species) within the infauna in Maine; N. virens is a factor in controlling the abundance of C. volutator, and C. volutator may play a role in regulating the densities of other infaunal species. Models of generalized cropping in soft-bottom systems may be too simple if they ignore complex trophic relationships within the infauna.  相似文献

The amphipod Corophium volutator (Pallas) of the Bay of Fundy is a major food resource for migrating shorebirds. A relatively low total lipid content (ca 1.7%) was found in summer and fall samples of 1986. Analysis of triacylglycerides which would normally reflect an animal diet through fatty acid input, revealed high proportions of fatty acids characteristic of algae. C. volutator contains hydrocarbons (0.2% of total lipids) with a unimodal distribution in the range C18 to C35 with maximum at C25, and a weak odd-carbon preference (carbon preference index, C.P.I. =1.22). This hydrocarbon pattern shown by C. volutator seems to be biogenic, but due to both a weak odd-carbon preference and a significant content of the isoprenoid phytane, the presence of petroleum hydrocarbons cannot be ruled out. Comparison of the hydrocarbon composition be ruled out. Comparison of the hydrocarbon composition found in C. volutator with hydrocarbons described in the literature for its most likely sources of food suggests that highly degraded material and aged detritus are components of the diet of this deposit feeder, and as important as the local diatom population. No organohalogen pesticides (DDT, dichlorodiphenyl-trichloroethane, or derivatives) or polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were detected in the lipid extracts of C. volutator. Absence of these materials and low hydrocarbon levels explain the continued successful exploitation of this food resource by migrating shorebirds.  相似文献

Suspension-feeding molluscs are important members of coastal communities and a large body of literature focuses on their feeding processes, including the efficiency of particle capture. Some molluscs, such as bivalves, capture individual picoplankton cells (0.2–2.0 μm) with a retention efficiency of less than 50%, leading to the assumption that such particles are not an important food resource. Picoplankton, however, are often concentrated in particle aggregates of much larger size. This study investigates the ability of suspension feeders to ingest picoplankton-size particles (0.2–2.0 μm) bound in marine aggregates. We fed clams (Mercenaria mercenaria), mussels (Mytilus edulis), oysters (Crassostrea virginica), scallops (Argopecten irradians) and slipper snails (Crepidula fornicata) 1.0- and 0.5-μm fluorescent particles (either polystyrene beads or bacteria) that were (1) dispersed in seawater, or (2) embedded within laboratory-made aggregates. Dispersed 10-μm beads were also delivered so that feeding activity could be determined. Ingested fluorescent particles were recovered in feces or isolated digestive glands and quantified. Results indicate that aggregates significantly enhance the ingestion of 1.0- and 0.5-μm beads by all species of bivalves, and enhance the ingestion of bacteria (greatest cell dimension ca. 0.6 μm) by all suspension feeders examined. Differences among species in their ability to ingest aggregates and picoplankton-size particles, however, were evident. Compared to mussels and clams, scallops and oysters ingested fewer aggregates with 1.0-μm beads or bacteria, and slipper snails ingested the most dispersed beads and bacteria. These differences may be a consequence of variations in gill structure and mechanisms of particle processing. Our data demonstrate that suspension feeders can ingest picoplankton-size particles that are embedded within aggregates, and suggest that such constituent particles may be an important food resource.  相似文献

The gut contents of dominant deep-sea benthic boundary layer zooplankton (primarily copepods and mysids) and the vacuole contents of phaeodarians collected and preserved in situ at four depths (from 724 to 3112 m) on an eastern tropical Pacific seamount (Volcano 7; 13°23N, 102°27W) between 23 November and 4 December 1988 were analyzed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Suspended, and sinking plus resuspended particles, were quantitatively sampled to characterize potential food sources. The broad oxygen minimum characteristic of this region intersects the summit of the seamount and affects the feeding ecology of these organisms. Several copepods and mysids and an amphipod contained guts packed with what appeared to be gram-positive bacteria, an unusual finding. We hypothesize that the source of these bacteria-like bodies was a mat or aggregate that originated in the oxygen minimum or at its upper or lower interface. The presence of the bacteria-like bodies in 43 to 100% of the particlefeeding zooplankton that were sectioned and that had gut contents, suggests that the bacteria-like bodies are an important food source. The diverse gut and vacuole contents of other detritivores were similar among depths. Particles and microorganisms from the depths were also similar. This finding can be explained by the rapid sinking of particles and aggregates from surface waters and their relatively intact transit through the broad oxygen minimum with its reduced populations of zooplankton. The presence of algal cells in guts and vacuoles of benthic boundary-layer zooplankton suggests that these zooplankton select particles of recent surface origin for consumption. The presence of the guts filled with bacteria-like bodies shows that some deep-sea copepods and mysids that are normally generalist feeders can specialize opportunistically. The similarity of gut contents of crustaceans and vacuole contents of phaeodarians suggests that these two very different groups of particle feeders utilize similar food sources in the deep sea.  相似文献

The pleopod ventilatory activity of the tube-dwelling amphipods Corophium volutator (Pallas) and C. arenarium Crawford is intermittent. Unlike the free-living amphipod Marinogammarus obtusatus (Dahl), which increases its rate of pleopod beating, the pleopod beat rate of both Corophium species is unaffected by low oxygen concentrations. However, the nature of the intermittent ventilation rhythm is altered so that, at low oxygen concentrations, the pleopods of Corophium beat almost continuously. It is suggested that the intermittent ventilation of Corophium can be interpreted as an adaptation to a tubicolous existence. The peracaridean Tanais chevreuxi Dollfus has 2 independent ventilatory systems, the maxilliped epipodites and the pleopods. The former, which respond to low oxygen concentrations, are thought to be the principal respiratory organs of T. chevreuxi, while the pleopods, which show no response to low oxygen tensions, are believed to be primarily concerned in filter feeding.  相似文献

Symbiotic filamentous bacteria thrive in the intestinal caecum of the deposit-feeding echinoid Echinocardium cordatum. Specimens of E. cordatum were collected at Wimereux (Nord Pas-de-Calais, France) in 1991. Their symbiotic bacteria build nodules by forming multilayered mats around detrital particles that enter the caecum. The morphological features of the bacteria are those of Thiothrix, a sulfide-oxidizing genus. The filaments, which may form rosettes, are sheathed and made by a succession of hundreds of rod-shaped bacteria which store elemental sulfur in the presence of external sulfide. Live bacteria are restricted to the outer layers of the nodules. Their sulfide-oxidizing activity was investigated, using a Biological Oxygen Monitor, by measuring the O2-consumption when reduced sulfur compounds are provided. They oxidize thiosulfate and sulfide. Optimal sulfide oxidation occurs at intermediary pO2 (100 to 160 M O2l-1). Spectrophotometry has confirmed that the sulfur content of the filamentous symbiotic sulfideoxidizing bacteria depends on the presence of external sulfide. This is the first report of symbiotic intradigestive Thiothrixspp.-like bacteria; it lengthens the list of symbioses between sulfide-oxidizing bacteria and invertebrates from sulfide-rich habitats.  相似文献

The ABC-method proposed by Warwick (1986) for detecting pollution effects on marine zoobenthic communities, was tested on distribution patterns of numbers and biomass among species in macrozoobenthos samples taken annually for 13 yr in a uniform way at 15 tidal-flat stations in the western part of the Dutch Wadden Sea. Along the margins of the tidal-flat area studied, where exposition to either drainage or water movements is extreme, the k-dominance plots for numbers were generally situated above those for biomass. In these areas values for biomass and species richness were relatively low and a few small-sized species such asCorophium volutator andHydrobia ulvae were very numerous. In the central part of the area, where environmental conditions are less severe, values for biomass and species richness were higher. Biomass was dominated by large adults ofMya arenaria, Mytilus edulis and/orArenicola marina. However, in only a restricted part of this area were plots for numbers consistently below biomass plots. In most of the central area high numbers ofH. ulvae occasionally occurred, causing plots for numbers to be situated above those for biomass during such periods. There appears to be no reason to interprete a high abundance ofH. ulvae as a sign of pollution or any other kind of disturbance or stress. It is concluded that the ABC method cannot be applied to tidal flat communities without reference to long-term and spatial series of control samples. In areas where such smallsized and sometimes numerous species asH. ulvae occur in strongly fluctuating numbers, the method appears useless for assessing the pollution status of a benthic community.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments have been conducted on the effects of bioturbation by the amphipod Corophium volutator (Pallas) and the polychaete Nereis diversicolor (O.F. Müller) on the physical properties of estuarine muddy sand. Invertebrates and muddy sediment were collected from Langbank, Firth of Clyde, Scotland. Sediment columns were seeded with low, medium and high densities of invertebrates in single-and mixed-species experiments. Permeability decreased with increasing density of C. volutator, but increased with increasing density of N. diversicolor. Water content decreased with increasing density of both species. Shear strength increased with increasing density of both species, but more so with C. volutator than with N. diversicolor. Mixed-species effects on shear strength were additive, but some of the permeabilities were lower than predicted. Bivariate and multivariate correlation, and partial correlation analyses were applied to the data. Shear strength was negatively correlated with water content. The correlations between shear strength and permeability and between permeability and water content were affected differently by the two species. There were few partial correlations between the variables.  相似文献

Blooms of the brevetoxin-producing Karenia brevis in the Gulf of Mexico cause massive fish kills, food poisoning and adverse respiratory effects in humans. Sedimentation of toxic cells following inert clay application could reduce toxin incorporation by commercially important suspension-feeding bivalves and thus prevent direct public health impacts, but could potentially lead to brevetoxin (PbTx) accumulation by benthic deposit-feeders. The goal of this study was therefore to compare suspension- and deposit-feeding as pathways for brevetoxins. We investigated: (1) the effect of toxic K. brevis on both feeding modes using a facultative deposit-suspension feeding tellinid bivalve, the clam Macoma balthica, as a model species and (2) the relative effectiveness of brevetoxin transfer via suspension- and deposit-feeding over 24-h exposure. Sedimentation of K. brevis was achieved by treatment with 0.25 g phosphatic clay l−1 and brevetoxin concentrations were measured by ELISA. Karenia brevis reduced both suspension- and deposit-feeding activity. This study demonstrates that brevetoxins can be rapidly accumulated by a surface deposit-feeding bivalve from sedimented K. brevis cells and that comparable toxin levels can be attained by both suspension- and deposit-feeding modes [1.2–1.6 μg PbTx (g tissue wet weight)−1]. Deposit-feeding clams generally do not pose a direct threat to humans but may provide a pathway for brevetoxin food web transfer.  相似文献

The feeding biology of Branchiostoma senegalense Webb from the North-West African shelf region off Mauritania was investigated. The hindgut contained almost exclusively seston components, ranging in size from less than 1 m (bacteria size) to 300 m. Numerous chloroplasts of ingested phytoplankton appeared to be undigested. Dunaliella salina was still alive when leaving the anus after 1 to 2 h. Detritus formed the greater part of the gut contents. The authors conclude that the lancelets feed mainly on detritus and thus are indiscriminate suspension feeders.  相似文献

The responses of the post-embryonic stages of Corophium volutator (Pallas) and C. arenarium Crawford to the combined effects of salinity and temperature show that gravid females have a wider tolerance than nongravid adult females which in turn are more tolerant than adult males. C. volutator is more tolerant of low salinity (2 to 10) than C. arenarium, but the latter is more tolerant of salinities above 45. The embryos of C. volutator develop normally and hatch at lower salinities and temperatures than those of C. arenarium, in which successful development was recorded at higher temperatures. Females undergoing a pre-copulatory moult failed to lay eggs below salinities of 3 (C. volutator) and 10 (C. arenarium), but in both species the lowest salinity at which all females moulted and laid eggs was 20. The results are discussed in relation to the distribution of both species.  相似文献

The food quality of detrital particles derived from three species of kelps was evaluated in a laboratory feeding experiment utilizing two species of suspension feeders, the serpulid polychaete Pseudochitonopomaoccidentalis and the mussel Mytilustrossulus. Fresh and aged kelp particles were also evaluated, and growth in all treatments was compared to growth on ad libidum phytoplankton rations. Fresh particles from Laminariagroenlandica, aged particles from Agarumfimbriatum and Alariamarginata, and mixed phytoplankton promoted the highest growth rates in both consumers. Growth was inversely related to total polyphenolic concentration in the fresh kelp particles. The increase in quality of both Agarumfimbriatum and Alariamarginata particles with age corresponded with a rapid loss of polyphenolic secondary metabolites and an increase in total nitrogen. We investigated the effect of different densities of the burrowing deposit-feeding amphipod Monoporeia affinis on the potential for recruitment of zooplankton from benthic resting eggs. Hatching of resting eggs was induced in the laboratory on sliced and resuspended 1-cm depth-sections of sediment cores, collected at six stations in an archipelago area of the Gulf of Bothnia, Baltic Sea. The uppermost 5 cm of the sediment was studied. The most common species that hatched was Eurytemora affinis (Copepoda). Individuals from another copepod genus, Acartia, hatched in significant numbers only in the cores from two stations with low amphipod abundance. Cores from stations with high amphipod densities showed a deeper distribution of emerging E. affinis nauplii compared with stations with few amphipods; the oxidised sediment layer was also deeper at high M. affinis densities than at low. Total (0 to 5 cm strata pooled) number of hatched E. affinis nauplii was independent of amphipod density. This indicates that the effect of M. affinis on E. affinis eggs involves deeper burial due to bioturbation, rather than predation. Decreased benthic recruitment of zooplankton at localities with high M. affinis density is suggested, since more deeply positioned eggs are less likely to hatch. When hatching was induced in intact, non-sliced cores from one station, the number of E. affinis nauplii that hatched was on average 43% of the number that hatched in the upper centimetre of the sliced cores from the same station. This fraction (43%), if applied to the other stations, implied a potential for benthic recruitment of up to 80 000 ind m−2 for E. affinis. Due to its high abundance, M. affinis is likely to greatly reduce benthic recruitment of zooplankton in this system. Received: 17 September 1999 / Accepted: 23 February 2000  相似文献

Populations of Molpadia oolitica (Holothuroidea) were sampled over an area of 440 km2 in Cape Cod Bay, Massachusetts, USA. This species occurs in silt-clay muds in densities of 2 to 6/m2, and is limited to depths greater than 22 m where the highest annual temperature does not exceed 10°C. M. oolitica lives within the mud, with its anterior end located approximately 20 cm below the surface. This species ingests only fine-grained particles at depth in the sediment, and deposits uncompacted feces at the surface, producing a fecal mound around the anal opening. This reworking produces vertical sediment sorting, high sediment-water content, and topographic relief of the sea floor. The fecal cones of M. oolitica provide a relatively stable surface for settlement and growth of the suspension feeders Euchone incolor (polychaete), Aeginina longicornis (amphipod), and Thyasira gouldi (bivalve) Uncompacted feces, accumulated in depressions between the mounds, form an unstable substratum frequently resuspended by tidal flow. Suspension feeders are absent from intercone areas.Contribution No. 236 of the Systematics-Ecology Program, Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA.  相似文献

The mechanisms driving genetic structure in marine systems are elusive due to the difficulty of identifying temporal and spatial barriers to dispersal. By studying marine invertebrate species with limited dispersal potential, genetic structure can be directly related to physical and biological factors restricting connectivity. In the northwest Atlantic, the benthic brood-rearing amphipod Corophium volutator is distributed across basins with distinct circulation patterns and has the potential to disperse passively during its adult stage. We analyzed spatial genetic variation and migration rates across C. volutator’s North American range with sequence data for mitochondrial DNA and three novel nuclear markers using frequency and coalescent-based methods. We found low genetic differentiation within basins, but strong subdivision within the Bay of Fundy and a striking biogeographic break between the Bay of Fundy and Gulf of Maine, suggesting that genetic drift may act on populations in which connectivity is restricted due to the limitation of passive dispersal by hydrological patterns.  相似文献

New observations on the feeding behavior of Corophium volutator, collected from the Menai Strait, Anglesey, UK in 1981, show that detritus drawn into one entrance of the U-shaped burrow is pushed out at the opposing entrance either uningested or as faeces. Periodically, the amphipod turns around in the burrow and recommences feeding, so both the uningested material and the faeces may be reworked by the mouthparts. A feeding individual produces, on average, 16 faecal pellets every 10 min, at a seawater temperature of 18°C. When fed on detritus dyed with azo-carmine, approximately 12 pellets are produced before the foregut, intestine and hindgut are completely clear of previously ingested material and the dye appears in the faeces. Dye which enters the ventral caeca takes between 12 and 48 h to clear this tissue and, furthermore, it is only cleared when the amphipod is feeding. It is concluded that ingested coarse material is subjected only to a primary phase of digestion in the stomach, and that it takes 4 to 24 min to clear the gut. Fine material which enters the ventral caeca is subjected to a secondary phase of digestion and absorption which takes 24 to 48 h. Particles of thorium dioxide and ferritin incorporated in the diet are absorbed by the B- and ageing RF-cells in the ventral caeca. Non-specific esterases occur in the apical regions of the same cells, the mature cells of the anterior dorsal caeca and the cells at the anterior of the intestine. Protease activity is greatest in the lumen of the ventral caeca and the large vacuole of the B-cells. Apart from the lumen of the posterior caeca, there is some protease activity throughout the lumen of the gut. Carbohydrates were localised primarily in the R/F-cells towards the proximal region of the ventral caeca. Lipid was confined to the R/F-cells in the same region.  相似文献

Summary. A diverse group of brown seaweeds produce bouquets of C11 metabolites, some of which act as pheromones that cue gamete release or attract sperm to eggs following release. We demonstrate that these C11 metabolites and their degradation products also frequently and strongly deter feeding by the herbivorous amphipod Ampithoe longimana, but rarely by the herbivorous sea urchin Arbacia punctulata. Across the range of concentrations tested, seven of twelve C11 metabolites or mixtures that we tested deterred feeding by the amphipod, but only two of eleven deterred the sea urchin. For those compounds where we could rigorously contrast the magnitude of deterrence against the amphipod with the magnitude of deterrence against the urchin, the amphipod was deterred significantly more than the urchin by five of six metabolites. Thus, C11 compounds were more frequently and more strongly deterrent to the amphipod than to the sea urchin. These findings for C11 metabolites conflict with previous investigations, where other classes of seaweed chemical defenses have been shown to deter feeding by large mobile herbivores like urchins and fishes but to be relatively ineffective against mesograzers, especially the species of amphipod that we used here. Our results suggest that C11 metabolites are unusual among the known seaweed chemical defenses in that they are especially effective against mesograzers, which often consume seaweed spores, zygotes, and juveniles. The high concentrations of C11 metabolites in brown algal eggs could allow these defenses to be especially important in defending gametes, zygotes, or young sporelings from herbivorous mesograzers. In this paper, we evaluate the influence of the burrowing crab Chasmagnathus granulatus on the feeding behavior, body condition, burrowing activity, and fecal production of the deposit-feeding polychaete Laeonereis acuta. Previous results and ours show that, due to crab activity, sediment organic matter decreases with depth outside a crab bed, but there were no differences inside. Also, particle sizes were smaller inside the crab bed. Polychaetes showed better body condition inside the crab bed, suggesting higher energy gain. They fed on the surface more frequently outside the crab bed than inside. However, feeding rate was higher inside the crab bed, which is consistent with the larger weight and volume of fecal pellets found inside crab bed. In both areas, the bedload sediment transport was not similar to the sediment ingested by this polychaete. A 1-month exclusion/inclusion experiment performed outside and inside the crab bed showed that the body condition of polychaetes changed between areas but that this was not directly due to crab manipulation. Thus, our results suggest that the higher sediment quality inside a crab bed can positively affect the feeding behavior of the deposit-feeding polychaete L. acuta, increasing its feeding rate and consequently enhancing its body condition.Communicated by P.W. Animal-sediment relations in Cape Cod Bay,Massachusetts I. A transect study   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Benthic macrofauna and bottom sediments were sampled at 7 stations along a 24 km long onshore-offshore transect ranging in depth from 12 to 42 m in Cape Cod Bay, Massachusetts, USA. High faunal density, biomass and species diversity were recorded at stations densely populated by tubicolous polychaetes. These tube mats bind and stabilize the substratum, providing solid surfaces for attachment of epizoans. Three suspension-feeding species, Euchone incolor (polychaete), Thyasira gouldi (bivalve) and Aeginina longicornis (amphipod), co-occur with deposit-feeding species on muds resuspended by tidal currents. Hydrographic profiles of temperature, salinity and turbidity indicate that resuspended silt-clay particles are entrapped in dense water below the summer thermocline, which persists from mid-April to mid-October. The zone of intersection of the thermocline with the sea floor in about 22 m of water defines a major biofacies-lithofacies transition. This ecotone is characterized by high faunal density, biomass, and species diversity. Benthic populations of macrofauna from Cape Cod Bay are larger than those from Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, and have a widely different taxonomic and trophic composition.Contribution No. 235 of the Systematics-Ecology Program, Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA.  相似文献

Feeding behavior in sexual and clonal strains of Poeciliopsis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary Sexual and clonal fish of the genus Poeciliopsis occur together in desert streams of Sonora, Mexico. Their coexistence has been explained in terms of niche partitioning for food and space. We examined predatory behavior that might influence niche relationships, and found significant differences among two coexisting sperm-dependent clonal strains and their two sexual progenitors. Handling time and prey manipulation of free-swimming (Artemia) and benthic (chironomid larvae) prey differed significantly among sexual and clonal strains. Analyses of gut contents from field-collected fish revealed that the laboratory estimates of predatory efficiency were related to their feeding behavior in nature. Behavior differences, such as those described herein, contribute to our understanding of the mechanisms of unisexual/bisexual coexistence in Poeciliopsis. Offprint requests to: R.C.
