Dose-response studies with ethylenediurea (EDU) and radish   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
There is some concern that the antiozonant ethylenediurea (EDU), used for crop loss assessment due to ambient ozone (O3) may per se affect plant growth and yield. In view of this, and to provide knowledge for later field experiments, dose-response studies with EDU and O3 were carried out in greenhouses in winter and spring 1989, using radish (Raphanus sativus L.) cv. 'Cherry Belle' and 'Red Prince', grown in two different substrates. EDU was applied as a single or repeated soil drench in concentrations ranging from 300 to 800 mg litre(-1) in the first, and from 100 to 400 mg litre(-1) in the second trial. In the second experiment, plants were exposed to a chronic level of O3, mimicking ambient patterns, or to filtered air after the EDU-treatment. When applied in concentrations above 300 mg litre(-1), EDU reduced growth, thereby affecting the development of the thickened hypocotyl far more than the shoot growth that was partially stimulated by lower doses of EDU. Phytotoxic symptoms on the leaves, attributable to EDU, were observed at concentrations above 200 mg litre(-1), but complete protection from visible O3-injury was provided by a single application of EDU at a concentration as low as 100 mg litre(-1). Significant interactions on growth characters measured between O3-exposure and EDU application were observed only in one of the substrates. While these results demonstrate the need for careful dose-response studies prior to field assessments, they also provide evidence of a dosage that is effective in protecting radish from O3 damage without interfering with plant growth itself.  相似文献

Greenhouse and ambient air experiments have shown ethylene diurea (EDU) to be a strong and specific protective suppressant of ozone injury in plants. To examine how EDU affects plant responses to various ozone (O(3)) levels under controlled field conditions, Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Lit was treated with 150 ppm EDU every 14 days and exposed in open-top chambers to charcoal-filtered air (CF), nonfiltered air (NF) or two cf treatments with ozone added. The ozone treatments were proportional additions of one (CF1) and two (CF2) times ambient ozone levels. The mean ozone concentrations in the CF, NF, CF1 and CF2 treatments were 0.98, 14.1, 14.98 and 31.56 nl litre(-1). A two-way split plot ANOVA revealed that shoot dry weight was significantly reduced by ozone. EDU treatment was highly significant for leaf dry weight, root dry weight and shoot dry weight, but not for pod dry weight; leading to a higher biomass of EDU-treated plants. Ozone/EDU interactions were significant for root weight only, indicating that EDU reduced growth suppression by ozone. These results show that EDU action on plant biomass could be interpreted as a delay in senescence since EDU-treated plants showed a significant decreased biomass loss even in the CF treatment.  相似文献

The impact of ozone on assimilate partitioning in plants: a review   总被引:50,自引:0,他引:50
Numerous studies have shown that ozone (O(3)) reduces plant growth and changes assimilate partitioning. The pattern of such changes varies with species, but trends suggest a comprehensive model. O(3) generally reduces the amount of dry matter in the whole plant. In plants which have not flowered or set fruit, and at low O(3) levels, the remaining available assimilate is generally diverted to leaves and stems at the expense of roots and crowns. As the plant matures, flowers and develops seeds, these sinks receive a relatively high proportion of the available assimilate. O(3) may reduce the number of flowers or seeds, but the remaining seeds often have a total dry matter accumulation comparable to that in non-stressed plants. At higher O(3) levels, assimilate accumulation is greatly depressed, and partitioning changes are not as obvious. However, it is significant that the storage organs of plants-those organs which supply energy for new growth in perennial plants such as trees-are the organs most affected by O(3)-induced partitioning changes when O(3) concentrations are in the range commonly observed in polluted ambient air.  相似文献

To study plant growth and yield effects of the antiozonant ethylenediurea (EDU), which is frequently used for ozone crop loss assessments, dose-response studies were carried out with potted bean plants under greenhouse conditions in winter and spring. Two cultivars of Phaseolus vulgaris L., differing in sensitivity to ozone (O(3)), were grown in unfiltered air on a sandy loam rich in organic matter and on a vermiculite-clay mixture. Four treatments of EDU at concentrations from 300 to 800 mg liter(-1) were given as a soil drench during plant development. Foliar symptoms of EDU phytoxicity were observed at all doses, and plant biomass, particularly pod dry weight, was considerably reduced to increasing doses of EDU. Primary and first trifoliate leaf weight in EDU-treated plants increased as did the number of buds, indicating an extension of vegetative growth and a delay of reproductive processes. 'BBL 290' beans, which are O(3)-sensitive, were injured by EDU more than the O(3)-tolerant 'BBL 274'. The phytotoxic effects of EDU were more pronounced in the synthetic growth substrate than in field soil. In a second experiment, EDU was applied in concentrations from 100 to 400 mg liter(-1) to 'BBL 290' plants, exposed to filtered air or simulated levels of O(3) pollution. In field soil, plant growth and biomass partitioning in filtered air was only slightly altered by EDU, although leaf injury due to EDU occurred. In the vermiculite-clay mix, the biomass of most plant organs, particularly that of roots, was linearly reduced with increasing EDU doses. O(3) did not cause any alteration in plant biomass in field soil-grown and EDU-treated plants. Ozone leaf injury, which affected 67% of primary leaf area in non-treated plants, was completely suppressed by EDU doses as low as 100 mg liter(-1). This indicates that low concentrations of EDU, which do not affect plant growth in field soil, provide sufficient protection from O(3) injury. The need for careful EDU dose-response studies prior to field assessments is emphasized.  相似文献

Potted plants of radish (Raphanus sativus L., cv. Cherry Belle) were grown in the ambient air for 5 weeks, with or without the application of a soil drench of the anti-ozonant ethylenediurea (EDU). The 24-h mean ozone concentration during the experimental period was 31 nl l(-1). Towards the end of the experiment two ozone episodes, with maximum concentrations around 70 and 115 nl l(-1), occurred. No visible injury that could be attributed to ozone was observed on any of the plants. Shoot and hypocotyl biomass were significantly lower in the non-EDU-treated plants than in the EDU-treated plants. The non-EDU-treated plants had a 32% lower hypocotyl biomass and a 22% lower shoot biomass. The shoot:hypocotyl ratio of the non-EDU-treated plants was higher than that of the EDU-treated plants, although the difference was not statistically significant. EDU treatment increased the leaf area and decreased the chlorophyll content of the leaves. These differences were, however, not statistically significant. It is suggested that the ambient rural ozone climate in southern Sweden has the potential to decrease biomass production in Cherry Belle radishes in the absence of visible injury.  相似文献

Plants of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris cv. Pros) were exposed to a range of O3 concentrations up to 70 nl litre(-1) for 9 h day(-1) in the presence (45 nl litre(-1)) and absence (21 nl litre(-1)) of enhanced NH3 in 12 open-top chambers. Treatment effects on visible injury, growth and yield were assessed after 49 (intermediate harvest) and 62 days of exposure (final harvest). The proportion of leaves with visible injury at final harvest increased with increasing concentrations of O3. Enhanced NH3 did not cause any symptoms and did not affect injury by O3. The estimated seasonal mean concentration corresponding with 5% injury was circa 23 nl litre(-1) O3. Biomass production and green pod yield decreased with increasing concentrations of O3 and were generally stimulated by enhanced NH3 at both harvests. Adverse effects of O3 on biomass and pod yield did not depend on the NH3 level. Relative yield response to increasing 9-h daily mean O3 concentrations was nonlinear and yield losses of 5 and 10% were calculated to occur at seasonal daytime mean concentrations of 27 and 33 nl litre(-1) O3, respectively. Linear regression showed that the Accumulated exposures Over a Threshold of 30 (AOT30) and 40 nl litre(-1) (AOT40) O3 performed equally well. The estimated accumulated O3 exposures corresponding with a yield loss of 5% were 1600 nl litre(-1) h for AOT30 and 400 nl litre(-1) h for AOT40. The results are discussed in relation to the long-term critical level that is used as a guideline to protect crops against adverse effects by O3.  相似文献

Field studies were conducted at USDA Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, Beltsville, Maryland, in 1984 and 1985 using open-top chambers to acquire information on the responses of 12 soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) cultivars to O3 stress and to examine the interactions between maturity groups and O3 stress. Cultivars representing Groups III, IV, and V were exposed for approximately 3 months to charcoal-filtered air (CF) and nonfiltered air plus 40 nl litre(-1) O3 (NF + O3). Ozone was added 6 h d(-1), 5 d week(-1) for 13 weeks. The CF effectively reduced the accumulative oxidant exposure (AOX) to less than 1.0 microl litre(-1) h and the NF + O3 treatment approximately doubled the ambient AOX (16.7 microl litre(-1) h) to about 30 microl litre(-1) h. The AOX estimates the total O3 exposure above 30 nl litre(-1) during an entire growing season. Plant growth rates and relative growth rates were reduced by 17.0 and 14.4%, respectively, when averaged over cultivars. Based on growth rates, the Group III cultivars were the most affected by O3 stress. Averaged over cultivars, leaf expansion rates, leaf conductance, and transpiration rates were lower in the NF + O3 treatment compared to the CF control; however, wide variation was found with the stomatal results from field observations. Combined over years and cultivars, grain yield was reduced by an average of 12.5% by O3 stress with 3 of 12 cultivars showing significant reductions. Grain protein content was increased by 0.7% by O3 stress, but cultivar differences were equal to the differences caused by the O3 treatments. Grain oil content was unchanged by the O3 treatments. Group IV cultivars showed the greatest decrease in grain yield due to O3 stress. Multiple regression analyses were calculated using the difference between the CF and NF + O3 treatment as a measure of O3 stress. Significant positive relationships were found among net assimilation rates, plant growth rates, relative growth rates, and leaf expansion rates, which suggest that growth analysis characteristics would be useful in addition to yield in air pollution tolerance improvement studies with soybeans.  相似文献

Effects of air pollution on rice yield in the Pakistan Punjab   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
A study using open-top chambers ventilated with ambient or charcoal filtered air in the vicinity of Lahore, Pakistan demonstrated reductions of 42% and 37% in the grain yield of two cultivars of rice (Oryza sativa L.). This yield reduction was primarily due to the reduction in mean panicle number per plant, although significant effects of filtration on 1000 grain weight and the number of filled grains per panicle were also detected. The 6-h daily mean O(3) concentrations were only 10-20 nl litre(-1) during the monsoon season, but increased to 30-55 nl litre(-1) later in the growing season, while the mean NO(2) concentration during the experiment was 12 nl litre(-1). On the basis of experience in North America and Japan, the reductions in yield in the present study are substantially greater than might be predicted. The reasons for this discrepancy are discussed, together with the implications for effects on rice yield in other regions of south and south-east Asia.  相似文献

The use of Raphanus sativus L. as a model crop for studies on plant response to environmental stresses is reviewed with emphasis on the effects of different atmospheric pollutants (O(3), SO(2), NO(2), acidic precipitation) and their combinations. Responses to temperature, light supply, water stress, and atmospheric CO(2) are also studied and discussed. In addition, the references reviewed are evaluated in terms of their experimental protocols on growth conditions and recommendations for optimal ranges of environmental and cultural variables, i.e. light, temperature, nutrient supply are given. Its distinct pattern of biomass partitioning, the small dimensions along with short and easy culture make radish an excellent experimental plant. The fleshy below-ground storage organ, formed by the hypocotyl and upper radicle, acts as the major sink during vegetative development. Abundant assimilate supply due to elevated levels of CO(2) along with high irradiation frequently promote hypocotyl growth more than shoot growth, whereas under conditions of stress shoot growth is maintained at the expense of the hypocotyl. This makes the hypocotyl: shoot ratio of radish a very sensitive and suitable indicator for various environmental stresses. Potential weaknesses and shortcomings of radish in its role as a model crop, particularly the high variability of injury and growth responses, are discussed along with possible solutions. Future research needs are derived from the summarized results presented and from some disparities among findings within the literature reviewed.  相似文献

Pea aphids feeding from birth to maturity on pea plants (Pisum sativum) exposed to SO(2) concentrations of 50 nl litre(-1) or 80 nl litre(-1) showed a significant 19% increase in the rate of nymph production during the reproductive period, compared to control aphids feeding on plants in charcoal-filtered air. The higher nymph production resulted in a mean 4.6% increase in the intrinsic rate of population increase (rm). In longer term glasshouse fumigation experiments pea aphid populations were, on average, 1.8 times greater on pea plants in ambient air plus 45 nl litre(-1) SO(2) than in ambient air alone. Aphid infestation in ambient air caused a 42% reduction in pea yield and affected most plant parameters adversely. Ambient air plus SO(2) had no direct effect on yield, but, in combination with aphid infestation, a further 10% reduction in yield was recorded.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to examine the effects of the anti-ozonant ethylenediurea (EDU) and chronic ozone (O3) exposure on leaf physiology and senescence in an O3-sensitive potato cultivar (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Norland). A dose-response experiment showed that an EDU concentration of 15 mg l(-1) soil (given as a soil drench) provided complete protection from accelerated foliar senescence induced by exposure to 0.1 microl l(-1) O3 for 5 h day(-1) for 11 days. EDU doses of 45 and 75 mg active ingredient l(-1) soil also gave protection but were associated with symptoms of toxicity and delayed senescence. In further experiments, plants were given 0 or 15 mg EDU l(-1) soil and exposed to clean air or 0.1 microl l(-1) O3 for 5 h day(-1) for 14 days. Chronic O3 exposure in the absence of EDU resulted in accelerated foliar senescence, characterized by early declines in net photosynthesis and Rubisco quantity in O3-treated plants relative to controls. EDU in the presence of O3 gave complete protection against symptoms of accelerated senescence. Senescence was not delayed in plants that received EDU in the absence of O3, and no symptoms of EDU toxicity were evident. The results suggest that EDU-induced tolerance to O3 was not based on 'anti-senescent' properties of this anti-ozonant.  相似文献

A field study was conducted to evaluate the suitability of ethylene diurea (N-[2-(2-oxo-1-imidazolidinyl)ethyl]-N'-phenylurea; EDU) in assessing the impact of O3 on mung bean plants (Vigna radiata L. var. Malviya Jyoti) grown in suburban area of Allahabad city situated in a dry tropical region of India. EDU is a synthetic chemical having anti-ozonant property. Mean monthly O3 concentration varied between 64 and 69 microg m(-3) during the experimental period. In comparison to EDU-treated plants, non-EDU-treated plants showed significant reductions in plant growth and yield under ambient conditions. Significant favourable effects of EDU-application were observed with respect to photosynthetic pigments, soluble protein, ascorbic acid and phenol contents. EDU-treated plants maintained higher levels of pigments, protein and ascorbic acid in foliage as compared to non-EDU-treated ones. The study clearly demonstrated that EDU alleviates the unfavourable effects of O3 on mung bean plants, and therefore can be used as a tool to assess the growth and yield losses in areas having higher O3 concentrations.  相似文献

Sitka spruce and Norway spruce were grown in controlled environments and then exposed to ozone (O3) for short periods as in mid-afternoon episodes experienced in the forest. For concentrations of between 20 and 300 nl litre(-1) there were linear relationships between exposure concentration and O3 uptake rates. Increasing photon flux densities increased rates of photosynthesis and transpiration, the increases being larger in actively growing than dormant seedlings. Physiological condition (dormancy or active growth), species and photon flux density were found to influence O3 flux via their effects on stomatal conductance. Exposure to 80 nl litre(-1) O3 resulted in consistent increases of stomatal conductance and there were also indications that water-use efficiency was decreased.  相似文献

Responses to ozone of insects feeding on a crop and a weed species   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The influence of ozone on insect herbivore growth and population development was investigated. Fumigation of both pea (Pisum sativum L.) and dock (Rumex obtusifolius L.) at a range of O(3) concentrations between 21-206 nl litre(-1) produced changes in mean relative growth rates of the aphids Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris and Aphis rumicis L. of between 24 and -6% relative to controls. However, there was no evidence of a dose-related response to O(3) fumigation and no clear differences in aphid response when fumigated with the plant on prefumigated or previously unfumigated plant material. It is suggested that this may, in part, be due to the presence of NO contamination during O(3) fumigation. However, the MRGR of dock aphids was found to be greater on new compared to old leaves as well as the increase on the new growth and decrease on the old growth of fumigated plants relative to unfumigated controls. The size of egg batches of the chrysomelid beetle Gastrophysa viridula Degeer were found to be larger, survival and productivity of larvae was higher, and the food consumption lower on R. obtusifolius fumigated with 70 nl litre(-1) O(3) compared with unfumigated controls. This meant that these beetle larvae consumed less leaf area per mg of production on fumigated leaves probably because of their better nutritional quality and/or reduced leaf defences. However, the rate of development of larvae was similar on fumigated and control plants.  相似文献

The effect of ozone (O3) on growth, yield and foliar antioxidants of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Turbo) was investigated in 1990 and 1991 in Braunschweig, Germany. Plants were grown full-season in pots in open-top chambers ventilated with charcoal-filtered (CF) air to which one or two levels of O3 were added. Mean 8 h day(-1) (10.00-18.00 h) O3 concentrations in the CF and CF + O3 treatments were 5.9, 61.2 and 92.5 nl litre(-1) in 1990, and 4.7 and 86.4 nl litre(-1) in 1991. Plants that received the high O3 level showed symptoms of premature senescence of the oldest leaves and yield reductions in both growing seasons. The contents of ascorbate and glutathione and the enzyme activities of ascorbate peroxidase and glutathione reductase were measured in symptomless flag leaves in weekly intervals before and after the beginning of anthesis. Leaf age had a significant effect on all antioxidants investigated. The O3 exposures of about 90 nl litre(-1) increased the activity of ascorbate peroxidase and the concentration of glutathione, but there were no pollutant effects on ascorbate content and glutathione reductase activity. Measurements of the antioxidant levels throughout one day showed no clear indications of diurnal changes in the antioxidative capacity in wheat flag leaves. The results are discussed in relation to the role of antioxidants in O3 detoxification.  相似文献

Ethylenediurea (EDU) has been widely used to prevent ozone (O3) injury and crop losses in crop plants and growth reductions in forest trees. Successful use requires establishing a dose/response curve for EDU and the proposed plant in the absence of O3 and in the presence of O3 before initiating multiple applications to prevent O3 injury. EDU can be used to verify foliar O3 symptoms in the field, and to screen plants for sensitivity to O3 under ambient conditions. Despite considerable research, the mode of action of EDU remains elusive. Additional research on the mode of action of EDU in suppressing O3 injury in plants may also be helpful in understanding the mode of action of O3 in causing injury in plants.  相似文献

Effects of increased ozone (O3) and carbon dioxide (CO2) on polyamine levels were determined in soybean (Glycine max L. Merr. cv. Clark) grown in open-top field chambers. The chamber treatments consisted of three O3 regimes equal to charcoal filtered (CF), non-filtered (NF), and non-filtered plus 40 nl litre(-1) O3 and CO2 treatments equal to 350, 400 and 500 microl litre(-1) for a total of nine treatments. Leaf samples were taken at three different times during the growing season. Examination of growth and physiological characteristics, such as photosynthesis, stomatal resistance, and shoot weight, revealed that increasing CO2 ameliorated the deleterious effects of increased O3. Results from the initial harvest, at the pre-flowering growth stage (23 days of treatment), showed that increasing O3 at ambient CO2 caused increases in putrescine (Put) and spermidine (Spd) of up to six-fold. These effects were lessened with increased CO2. Elevated CO2 increased polyamines in plants treated with CF air, but had no effect in the presence of ambient or enhanced O3 levels. Leaves harvested during peak flowering (37 days of treatment) showed O3-induced increases in Put and Spd at ambient CO2 concentrations. However, increased CO2 levels inhibited this response by blocking the O3-induced polyamine increase. Leaves harvested during the pod fill stage (57 days of treatment) showed no significant O3 or CO2 effects on polyamine levels. Our results demonstrate that current ambient O3 levels induce the accumulation of Put and Spd early in the growing season and that further increases in O3 could result in even greater polyamine increases. These results are consistent with a possible antiozonant function for polyamines. The ability of increased CO2 to protect soybeans from O3 damage, however, does not appear to involve polyamine accumulation.  相似文献

The sensitivity of Cicer arietinum, Vigna mungo and Trigonella foenum-graecum to O(3) has been assessed at different stages of growth and development. Plants of different ages (0, 1, 2, 4 and 6 weeks old) were fumigated with 0 and 120 nl litre(-1) O(3), from 09.30 h to 16.30 h each day for four weeks, in hemispherical chambers located out-of-doors. Seed germination was not affected by O(3) in any of the species, but there were responses (differing between species) on the cotyledons. True leaves were fairly resistant when young but later they became more sensitive. Premature senescence and earlier abscission of leaves (in C. arietinum and T. foenum-graecum) and flowers and abortive fruit drop (in C. arietinum) were also observed. Of the five growth stages examined, 2- and 4-week-old plants seemed to be most sensitive except for Trigonella where sensitivity decreased with increasing age of the plants. The partitioning and distribution of dry matter among different plant parts was also significantly disturbed and root, leaf and stem were adversely affected in a decreasing order. However, the percentage reductions in dry weight per plants for Cicer and Vigna increased with age up to four weeks, then declined abruptly. Growth reductions at the 0- and 6-week-old stages differed only slightly and were very small in magnitude. It may, therefore, be suggested that the plants of these legumes in early stages of exponential growth are more vulnerable to O(3) damage and that the developmental or physiological age is an important factor in O(3) sensitivity.  相似文献

Treatments with ethylenediurea (EDU) protect plants from ozone foliar injury, but the processes underlying this protection are poorly understood. Adult ash trees (Fraxinus excelsior), with or without foliar ozone symptoms in previous years, were treated with EDU at 450ppm by gravitational trunk infusion in May-September 2005 (32.5ppmh AOT40). At 30-day intervals, shoot growth, gas exchange, chlorophyll a fluorescence, and water potential were determined. In September, several biochemical parameters were measured. The protective influence of EDU was supported by enhancement in the number of leaflets. EDU did not contribute its nitrogen to leaf tissue as a fertiliser, as determined from lack of difference in foliar N between treatments. Both biochemical (increase in ascorbate-peroxidase and ascorbic acid, and decrease in apoplastic hydrogen peroxide) and biophysical (decrease in stomatal conductance) processes regulated EDU action. As total ascorbic acid increased only in the asymptomatic trees, its role in alleviating O(3) effects on leaf growth and visible injury is controversial.  相似文献

Purple coneflower plants (Echinacea purpurea) were placed into open-top chambers (OTCs) for 6 and 12 weeks in 2003 and 2004, respectively, and exposed to charcoal-filtered air (CF) or twice-ambient (2x) ozone (O3) in 2003, and to CF, 2x or non-filtered (NF), ambient air in 2004. Plants were treated with ethylenediurea (EDU) weekly as a foliar spray. Foliar symptoms were observed in >95% of the plants in 2x-treated OTCs in both years. Above-ground biomass was not affected by 2x treatments in 2003, but root and total-plant biomass decreased in 2004. As a result of higher concentrations of select cell wall constituents (% ADF, NDF and lignin) nutritive quality was lower for plants exposed to 2x-O3 in 2003 and 2004 (26% and 17%, respectively). Significant EDU x O3 interactions for concentrations of cell wall constituents in 2003 indicated that EDU ameliorated O3 effects on nutritive quality. Interactions observed in 2004 were inconsistent.  相似文献
