Results are presented from a series of parametric experimental and analytical studies of the behaviour of dense gravity currents along rotating, up-sloping, wedge-shaped channels. High resolution density profile measurements at fixed cross- and along-channel locations reveal the outflowing bottom gravity currents to adjust to quasi-steady, geostrophically-balanced conditions along the channels, with the outflow layer thickness and cross-channel interface slope shown to scale with the inlet Burger number for all experimental conditions tested. A general analytical solution to the classic rotating hydraulics problem has been developed under the assumption of inviscid, zero-potential-vorticity conditions to model dense water flow through a triangular constriction and thus simulate the vee-channel configurations under consideration. Predictions from this zero-PV model are shown to provide good overall quantitative agreement with experimental measurements obtained both under hydraulically-controlled conditions at the channel exit and for subcritical conditions generated along the channel length. Quantitative discrepancies between measurements and analytical predictions are attributed primarily to assumptions and limitations associated with the zero-PV modelling approach adopted, as well as the to the rapid adjustment in outflow characteristics as the channel exit is approached, as characterised by the along-channel variation in densimetric Froude number for the outflows.  相似文献

The impacts of a functional and a demolished copper processing works on the aquatic and terrestrial environment in the vicinity of the works was investigated by determining the levels of selected trace metals in river water, river sediments, channel margin sediments and overbank soils. Samples were taken at five sites within an area of the Churnet Valley in Staffordshire, where the River Churnet flows through the two works. Analysis of river water samples by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) has shown that only copper is present above background levels considered to typify uncontaminated rivers. Analysis of river sediments, channel margin sediments and overbank soils by nitric-perchloric acid digestion and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-AES) analysis has indicated contamination by arsenic, cadmium and copper in the vicinity of both works. Arsenic and copper are deposited primarily within the aquatic environment, although some contamination of the terrestrial environment by copper is also observed. Cadmium is deposited primarily within the terrestrial environment. The deposition of arsenic and copper in river and channel margin sediments respectively is also related to current and historical contamination.  相似文献

In open channel, canals and rivers, a rapid increase in flow depth will induce a positive surge, also called bore or compression wave. The positive surge is a translating hydraulic jump. Herein new experiments were conducted in a large-size rectangular channel to characterise the unsteady turbulent properties, including the coupling between free-surface and velocity fluctuations. Experiments were repeated 25 times and the data analyses yielded the instantaneous median and instantaneous fluctuations of free-surface elevation, velocities and turbulent Reynolds stresses. The passage of the surge front was associated with large free-surface fluctuations, comparable to those observed in stationary hydraulic jumps, coupled with large instantaneous velocity fluctuations. The bore propagation was associated with large turbulent Reynolds stresses and instantaneous shear stress fluctuations, during the passage of the surge. A broad range of shear stress levels was observed underneath the bore front, with the probability density of the tangential stresses distributed normally and the normal stresses distributed in a skewed single-mode fashion. Maxima in normal and tangential stresses were observed shortly after the passage of a breaking bore roller toe. The maximum Reynolds stresses occurred after the occurrence of the maximum free-surface fluctuations, and this time lag implied some interaction between the free-surface fluctuations and shear stress fluctuations beneath the surge front, and possibly some causal effect.  相似文献

There are large extensions of coastal lagoons in the Colombian Caribbean. In spite of their renowned environmental and socio-economic importance, these ecosystems have been poorly evaluated. To initiate a process for understanding the biophysical features of the La Caimanera lagoon, bathymetric surveys were conducted on a 25 × 25 m grid approach. Echo sounder and GPS were used to collect the data, which was then analyzed with ArcGIS 9.2 to produce bathymetry maps. A total of 3355 data points indicated an average depth of 1.83 m (SD ± 0.55) with a range of 0.7–5.4 m. Higher and lower values were recorded within the access channel and on the western margin of the lagoon respectively, suggesting that depth distribution was probably related to the interaction of different factors. These factors include the hydrological influence of the entrance channel currents and the micro-catchments of the streams located on the southeast side, along with the possible effects of the survey course selection. Apparently, the dynamic of the streams caused sedimentation on the opposite southwest margin, affecting the environmental quality by siltation and the accumulation of organic matter. Research, monitoring programs, and new management plans are necessary to avoid the deterioration of the ecological goods and services derived from this important local ecosystem.  相似文献

Significant ecological, hydrologic, and geomorphic changes have occurred during the 20th century along many large floodplain rivers in the American Southwest. Native Populus forests have declined, while the exotic Eurasian shrub, Tamarix, has proliferated and now dominates most floodplain ecosystems. Photographs from late 19th and early 20th centuries illustrate wide river channels with largely bare in-channel landforms and shrubby higher channel margin floodplains. However, by the mid-20th century, floodplains supporting dense Tamarix stands had expanded, and river channels had narrowed. Along the lower Green River in eastern Utah, the causal mechanism of channel and floodplain changes remains ambiguous due to the confounding effects of climatically driven reductions in flood magnitude, river regulation by Flaming Gorge Dam, and Tamarix invasion. This study addressed whether Tamarix establishment and spread followed climate- or dam-induced reductions in annual peak flows or whether Tamarix was potentially a driver of floodplain changes. We aged 235 Tamarix and 57 Populus individuals, determined the hydrologic and geomorphic processes that controlled recruitment, identified the spatial relationships of germination sites within floodplain stratigraphic transects, and mapped woody riparian vegetation cohorts along three segments of the lower Green River. The oldest Tamarix established along several sampling reaches in 1938, and 1.50-2.25 m of alluvium has accreted above their germination surfaces. Nearly 90% of the Tamarix and Populus samples established during flood years that exceeded the 2.5-year recurrence interval. Recruitment was most common when large floods were followed by years with smaller peak flows. The majority of Tamarix establishment and Green River channel narrowing occurred long before river regulation by Flaming Gorge Dam. Tamarix initially colonized bare instream sand deposits (e.g., islands and bars), and most channel and floodplain changes followed the establishment of Tamarix. Our results suggest that Tamarix recruitment was triggered by large annual floods that were followed by years with lower peak flows, not by periods of low flow alone. Tamarix appears to have actively invaded floodplains, while Populus colonization has been limited. Thus, Tamarix invasion may have greatly influenced floodplain development and riparian vegetation composition along the lower Green River since the early 20th century.  相似文献

Multibeam echo-sounder (MBES), sub-bottom profiler, singlebeam tracks and public-domain bathymetry geophysical datasets were analyzed in a Geographic Information System (GIS) for accuracy assessment and further used to update the previous map (Curray et al. Mar Pet Geol 19: 1191–1223, 2003) of submarine channel-levee systems in the eastern Bengal Fan near the Andaman region. Comparative analysis of singlebeam with MBES indicated 2.8 % of root-mean-square difference in bathymetry, and could clearly bring out distinct submarine channel profiles. The channel map revealed that the previously named E6 [updated as E7(1a)] and E7 [updated as E7(1b)] channels emanate from the middle and lower Bengal Fan, respectively and merge together at 91.28°E, 10.64°N where they form a second order channel [E7(2)] that flows southward along the east of Ninety-east Ridge. Similarly, two first order channels [E6(1a) and E6(1b)] emanate from the lower Bengal Fan which merge together at 88.78°E, 06.92°N to form a second order channel [E6(2)] that flows along the west of Ninety-east Ridge towards the equator. This channel was previously thought to be linked to the middle Bengal Fan. High-resolution MBES tracks over the channel shows extensive meandering patterns with the channel gently deepening and widening towards south. Variations in the morphology and stratigraphy indicate that the E7 channel is characterized by a curvilinear course, with higher observed sinuosity wherever gradient decreases.  相似文献

The present study focuses on the effects of vegetation cover changes on the dynamic morphology of seven southeastern Mediterranean river mouths. The methodology used comprised monitoring and mapping by GIS techniques, with data derived from historic aerial photographs, which were applied in the investigation of the morphological spatial and temporal migration patterns of the mouths, and subsequent analysis of the vegetation cover changes influencing them. Vegetation cover adjacent to river mouths influences river mouth morphology through five primary mechanisms: a) bank vegetation; b) dune advancement toward the shoreline; c) changes in the beach??s micro-topography; as well as d) long-term continuous channel migration through permanent vegetation patches; and e) channel switching through permanent vegetation patches. The five mechanisms are part of a system of interactions between channel water flow and fluvial processes; coastal sediment transport and coastal processes; and the evolution of plant communities. In the interplay between these factors they all affect and are being affected by one another. In many river mouths artificial channel diversion is often needed due to uncontrolled channel migration. It is demonstrated that vegetation cover can serve as a mean of ??soft?? channel regulation. Therefore, a better understanding of the five influencing mechanisms may aid in controlling and managing river mouth migration patterns. The study contributes to the knowledge about bank vegetation as a tool of ??soft?? channel regulation and thus can contribute to the improvement of coastal zone management.  相似文献

The curvature-driven secondary flow in sinuous submarine channels has been a subject of considerable interest and controversy. Here, results from numerical model studies involving saline flow in laboratory-scale channels are presented. A 3D finite volume model of density and turbidity currents is used and simulations are run with different inflow discharges and channel-axis slopes. The simulation results show strong influence of bend wave length, channel gradient, confinement and cross sectional shape on the structure of secondary flow in submarine channels. Major findings are: (i) reversal of secondary flow in submarine channels is strongly associated with a tight bend characterized by a smaller wave length to width ratio or larger wave number, (ii) for the same inflow condition and planform characteristics, a trapezoidal channel cross section is more favorable to secondary flow reversal than a rectangular cross section, (iii) lateral convection resulting from the interaction between in-channel and overbank flows leads to the reversal of secondary flow in an unconfined channel at a lower channel slope than in a confined channel with the same dimensions, (iv) flow discharge has only nominal effect on the secondary flow in submarine channels.  相似文献

昆虫神经系统para型钠离子通道是菊酯类杀虫剂的主要靶标,对10多种昆虫的研究表明,钠离子通道基因发生点突变与昆虫对菊酯类杀虫剂的抗性密切相关.通过RT-PCR扩增的方法,我们获得了编码溴氰菊酯抗性和敏感品系棉铃虫钠离子通道域Ⅱ-Ⅳ的cDNA片段.核苷酸序列及推导的氨基酸序列分析结果表明,溴氰菊酯抗性品系棉铃虫钠离子通道基因不存在其它昆虫中报道的kdr和super-kdr抗性突变,但是我们发现了一个甲硫氨酸(M)到亮氨酸(L)的新突变,该突变位于域Ⅱ和Ⅲ之间.由于昆虫钠离子通道高度保守,因此,该突变很可能与棉铃虫对溴氰菊酯的抗性有关.另外,通过PCR扩增的方法,克隆了棉铃虫钠离子通道域Ⅱ-Ⅳ的基因片段,该片段全长7334bp,包含有13个外显子和12个内含子,与果蝇和烟蚜夜蛾相比,内含子在基因中的位置基本一致,进一步表明昆虫钠离子通道基因在进化过程中高度保守.图5表1参22  相似文献

Abstract: In 1987, a proposal was made to introduce channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) into New Zealand for aquaculture. An environmental impact assessment in support of the proposal incorporated details of channel catfish biology, its value to people, diseases, the history of introductions elsewhere, and possible impacts on New Zealand biota should the species become established in the wild. Although information on the environmental impacts of channel catfish introduced to other countries was limited and inadequate for assessing potential effects on freshwater ecosystems in New Zealand, a permit was granted to import fertilized eggs. These were hatched in quarantine, and subject to the favorable outcome of environmental trials were to be released for aquaculture. Subsequently, the requirement for trials was abandoned and instead an independent, two-man review team (the authors) was appointed to advise the Minister of Fisheries on whether the environmental risk posed by channel catfish was acceptable. The team considered the impact assessment and additional submissions from interested parties. The team concluded that there was a high probability that fish would escape and that they would be capable of breeding and growing in a wide range of freshwater environments throughout much of New Zealand. Because channel catfish are omnivorous, they would probably prey on at least some native fish species and introduced salmonids, invertebrates including freshwater crayfish, and aquatic macrophytes. Competition to the detriment of other fishes was also considered likely. Furthermore, the low species diversity and ecological simplicity of fish communities in New Zealand could allow channel catfish opportunities not found within their natural range, as in parts of western North America where they have had significant impacts on freshwater communities. Because the evidence indicated that one or more valued species was likely to suffer a decline in abundance or distribution if channel catfish were introduced, the review team recommended that the environmental risk posed by the fish was unacceptable. The recommendation was accepted by the Minister of Fisheries and all the channel catfish held in quarantine were destroyed. This case clearly demonstrated weaknesses in the importation procedure in New Zealand and subsequently some changes have been made. In general, we recommend a four-step importation procedure comprising (1) environmental impact assessment, (2) publicity, (3) independent review, and (4) implementation. Coastal lagoons have long been subjected to anthropogenic disturbances due to the increasingly urbanization pressure along the margins. As a result, the composition, structure and distribution of macrozoobenthic communities are strongly affected by environmental gradients and harsh ecological conditions. This study address the first signs changes in the Piratininga-Itaipu lagoon system, located in the southeastern Brazilian coastline, state of Rio de Janeiro, after the opening of a tidal channel in the most deteriorated area of Piratininga lagoon in April 2008, as part of restoration measures concerning the severe eutrophication of this system. In order to observe changes in environmental conditions and community structure before and after the channel opening, sampling of the benthic macrofauna and abiotic variables were conducted in seven sites, from August 2007 to March 2009. According to statistical tools, no significant differences were shown in both environmental characteristics and community structure before and after the channel at the distinct locations. Nevertheless, local changes in the abundance and composition of species were detected particularly in Piratininga, in the site where the tidal channel was constructed. A remarkable loss in abundance of most opportunistic species and the appearance of six new taxa in Piratininga after the opening of the channel was related to habitat regeneration in virtue of the intrusion of marine waters into the lagoon. However, marine inflow seems to be restricted since no clear evidence of the channel influence was felt in the remaining sites of Piratininga and in Itaipu. Macrobenthic communities were heterogeneous between both lagoons throughout the sampling period, characterized by low diversity and evenness indices. A general increase in salinity and redox potential were observed in Piratininga. Both variables allied to dissolved oxygen appeared to play a major role in structuring the benthic communities. This study is the first contribution to knowledge of taxonomic biodiversity of macrozoobenthic assemblages of Piratininga-Itaipu lagoon system and pioneer in describing apparent ecosystem ameliorations after the channel opening. Therefore, continuous monitoring ought to be carried out in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the tidal channel and follow further recovery of this ecosystem. Macrobenthos were quite heterogeneous between both lagoons throughout the sampling period, with biological attributes showing a remarkable loss in species abundance, mostly opportunistic. The appearance of new taxa, Polydora cornuta, after the opening of the channel was related to improvement of better oxygenation of water and sediments, causing regeneration of habitat. Other resilient taxa with persistant bioturbation activities, such as Allita, Streblospio, Capitella and oligochaetes, dominated the early stages of recovery. This study is the first contribution to knowledge of taxonomic biodiversity of macrozoobenthic assemblages of Piratining-Itaipu lagoon system and pioneer in describing apparent ecosystem ameliorations after the channel opening. Otolith strontium:calcium ratios were used to trace lifetime movements of American eels (Anguilla rostrata) captured in salt-water bays and adjoining freshwater ponds in Prince Edward Island, Canada. Eels were classified into migratory contingents based on their movement patterns. A pond with a pool-and-weir salmonid fishway and a pond drained by a low-gradient channel contained eels that had entered freshwater at all ages, but a pond with a 2.2 m vertical spillway contained only eels that had entered freshwater in the elver year. Salt-water residents were the dominant migratory contingent in salt-water bays (85% of 39), which overturns the paradigm of obligate catadromy for this species. Freshwater residency was the sole pattern found in the pond with the vertical spillway (100% of 12) and the majority contingent in the pond with the low-gradient channel (54% of 24). Inter-habitat shifting was the dominant migratory contingent in eels sampled from the pond with the pool-and-weir fishway (85% of 20). Resident eels were established in salt- and freshwater habitats by the year after their arrival in continental waters. Eels that shifted between habitats increased their rate of inter-habitat shifting with age. 采用定位对比试验方法,连续2年按季节对比监测广州市南沙区沿海防护林(海岸防护林、河涌水网防护林、路网防护林)土壤与岸堤撂荒地土壤、土壤水分与林缘江水中K+、Na+、Mg、Cl-、SO42-、HCO3-、Pb、Cd的含量,研究海岸景观防护林群落对岸堤土壤盐分、重金属元素的生态修复作用。结果表明:①与林缘江水相比,防护林土壤水分中K+、Na+、Cl-、SO42-平均含量分别减小约66.2%、28.8%、34.9%、17.5%,有效地改善了土壤水体钠盐、钾盐的含量。②防护林群落土壤水、林缘江水中Pb与Cd的年均含量依次为:江水〉海岸防护林〉河涌水网防护林〉路网防护林;相对于林缘江水,防护林土壤水分中Pb、Cd平均含量分别减小约38.0%、68.2%。③相对于堤岸撂荒地土壤,防护林群落土壤中K+、Na+、Cl-、SO42-、HCO3-平均含量分别减小约66.5%、63.8%、63.9%、76.8%和11.2%;3种防护林群落间K+、Na+、Cl-、SO42-、HCO3-的含量差异显著,即路网防护林〉河涌水网防护林〉海岸防护林,且相对撂荒地土壤Cd的平均含量减小率分别达到72.8%、57.6%、77.5%,表现出显著的土壤化学生态修复效应。④3种防护林土壤的盐分离子含量在季节上、土壤层上未表现出显著差异;土壤Pb、Cd含量在土层间的差异也不显著,、但在年内季节上的差异极显著。总体来看,海岸景观防护林能够有效缓解珠江口土壤盐分和重金属的侵蚀,在沿海地区发挥着重要的生态修复作用。  相似文献

In this work the authors describe the main characteristics of the velocity field of hydraulic jumps in a very large channel where lateral shockwaves occur. Experiments were carried out at the Coastal Engineering Laboratory of the Water Engineering and Chemistry Department of the Technical University of Bari (Italy). Extensive flow velocity measurements were investigated in order to have a clearer understanding of both hydraulic jump development and lateral shockwave formation in a very large channel. Eight experiments were performed in a 4m wide rectangular channel; the experiments differed in the inlet Froude number F 0 and the jump type. Seven tests were carried out with undular jumps and one with a roller jump. The flow velocity and the flow free surface measurements were taken using a two-dimensional Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV) and an ultrasonic profiler, respectively. The experimental results can be summarized as follow: (i) the formation of well developed lateral shockwaves similar to those of oblique jumps were observed; (ii) the comparison of the experimental and theoretical data shows that the classic shockwave theory is sufficiently confirmed in the analyzed range of Reynolds number, taking into account the experimental errors and the difference between the theoretical and experimental assumptions; (iii) the transversal flow velocity profiles in the recirculating zone show a good agreement with the numerical simulations presented in literature in the case of a separated turbulent boundary layer over a flat plate. This conclusion enables us to confirm the hypothesis that the lateral shockwaves in the channel are the result of a boundary layer which, as observed, forms on the channel sidewalls.  相似文献

Three Greenland sharks (Somniosus microcephalus) were tagged with electronic tags, in Baie St. Pancrace, St. Lawrence Estuary, Quebec, Canada. One shark was tagged on 23 July 2004, with an acoustic telemetry tag. Two sharks were each tagged with a pop-up satellite archival tag (PSAT) on 27 August 2004. Two of the sharks remained in or close to the bay, one for 47 days and the other for at least 66 days. The third shark left the bay immediately after tagging on 27 August 2004. This shark entered the main channel of the St. Lawrence Estuary, and had moved 114.9 km upstream by 1 November 2004 when the tag reported to ARGOS satellites. The tags provided a total of 179 days of data on the movement and environmental preferences of Greenland sharks in the St. Lawrence Estuary. Sharks that reported depth and ambient water temperature data from the bay showed significant diel differences in depth preferences and corresponding ambient temperatures. The sharks remained near the bottom of the water column during the day and displayed increased vertical movements at night. The shark that resided in the main channel did not show this pattern, but generally remained at depths between 325 and 352 m. Sharks in the bay experienced water temperatures that ranged from −1.1 to 8.6°C at depths from 0 to 67 m. In the main channel the shark experienced temperatures that ranged from 1.0 to 5.4°C at depths from 132 to 352 m. This is the first report of numerous Greenland sharks inhabiting shallow near shore bays during summer and autumn.  相似文献

To determine the feasibility of using a dam-break generated flow from the sea into a storm-drain to aid in the regeneration of iron particles that control the production of H2S in the storm-drain, a laboratory experimental investigation is carried out to measure the regeneration potential and the detailed hydrodynamics of the dam-break generated flow that causes the regeneration. The experiments are carried out using a reservoir of essentially infinite size, the sea, and a channel of limited width and adverse slope 1:20, the storm-drain. The regeneration experiments confirmed the ability of the dam-break generated flow to aid in the regeneration of the iron particles, however the regeneration potential varies from good to poor with distance away from the gate into the channel. The detailed measurements of the hydrodynamics highlighted that the dam-break generated flow from an infinite reservoir diverges little during the first uprush, has much smaller velocities during the first backwash and includes significant free surface waves. An initially wet channel bed reduces the flux into the channel. Close to the gate the flow depth increases more quickly but the velocity, and therefore the regeneration potential, is smaller.  相似文献

Satellite transmitters were attached to 25 reproductively active and four inactive adult male loggerhead sea turtles (86.6–107.0 cm SCLmin) captured from the Port Canaveral, FL, USA shipping channel to assess horizontal and vertical distributions. During the breeding period, male loggerheads aggregated (44% of 755 turtle days) in a 117.6 km2 core area that encompassed the shipping channel. Median dive duration during the breeding period was 27 min (IQR = 15–42 min) and males spent 4% (IQR = 3–5%) of the time at the surface, with significantly shorter dives associated with reproductively active males. Migrant and resident males dispersed concurrently, with residents shifting > 30 km east across the continental shelf over a more protracted departure schedule than migrants. Dive duration and time spent at the surface increased through the fall. Cluster analysis revealed the strongest association for dive duration with sea state during and after the breeding period, with significantly longer dives during more turbulent conditions. In contrast, univariate associations with surface interval duration were not elucidated.  相似文献

The presence of suction (flow of water from channel to ground water) affects the channel hydrodynamics and increases the bed shear stress. At high bed shear stress in alluvial channels made of the non-cohesive material, sediment transport occurs as sheet flow layer of high sediment concentration. The sediment transport in the form of sheet flow has been observed in the present study when suction was applied to the non-transporting channels designed on incipient motion condition. The erosion of the channel banks contributed to the sheet flow because of the increased channel bed shear stress. An empirical relation for the thickness of sheet flow layer has been developed which includes suction as independent parameter along with others.  相似文献
