Airborne measurements of the growth of the marine accumulation mode after multiple cycles through stratocumulus cloud are presented. The nss-sulphate cloud residual mode was log-normal in spectral shape and it’s mode radius was observed to progressively increase in size from 0.78 to 0.94 μm over 155 min of air parcel evolution through the cloudy marine boundary layer. The primary reason for this observed growth was thought to result from aqueous phase oxidation of SO2 to aerosol sulphate in activated cloud drops. An aqueous phase aerosol–cloud-chemistry model was used to simulate this case study of aerosol growth and was able to closely reproduce the observed growth. The model simulations illustrate that aqueous phase oxidation of SO2 in cloud droplets was able to provide enough additional sulphate mass to increase the size of activated aerosol. During a typical cloud cycle simulation, ≈4.6 nmoles kg-1air (0.44 μg m-3) of sulphate mass was produced with ≈70% of sulphate production occurring in cloud droplets activated upon sea-salt nuclei and ≈30% occurring upon nss-sulphate nuclei, even though sea-salt nuclei contributed less than 15% to the activated droplet population. The high fraction of nss-sulphate mass internally mixed with sea-salt aerosol suggests that aqueous phase oxidation of SO2 in cloud droplets activated upon sea-salt nuclei is the dominant nss-sulphate formation mechanism and that sea-salt aerosol provides the primary chemical sink for SO2 in the cloudy marine boundary layer.  相似文献

Operator splitting applied to cloud micro-physical and multiphase chemical process causes the so-called operator splitting errors in addition to other numerical errors when used in numerical models. Operator splitting is mainly used due to limited computer resources or for historical reasons. Unfortunately, it is impossible so far to theoretically estimate either the order of magnitude or the tendency of the splitting errors in complex non-linear systems such as mutually interacting cloud chemical and micro-physical processes. The present study systematically investigates the splitting error mentioned above, by numerical means to define valid ranges of the applicability of the method of operator splitting to those systems. Results of the current study show that de-coupling intervals larger than 100 s cause an underestimation of the total liquid water content as well as the particle radius of the order of 10% for simulation periods of 1000 s. The maximum overprediction of the total content of dissolved material in the particles is of the order of about 20% for de-coupling intervals of 10–15 min. The error in the sulphate production contributes about 50% to the discrepancy in total aerosol content. Since the de-coupling intervals between dynamical, micro-physical, and chemical processes in most recent air quality models are considerably longer than 15 min, the consequences of the application of operator splitting requires further investigation with respect to predicted aerosol formation, cloud water content, deposition rates, photo-chemistry, cloud optical properties, etc.  相似文献

A kinetic mechanism to predict secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from the photo-oxidation of toluene was developed. Aerosol phase chemistry that includes nucleation, gas–particle partitioning and particle-phase reactions as well as the gas-phase chemistry of toluene and its degradation products were represented. The mechanism was evaluated against experimental data obtained from the University of North Carolina (UNC) 270 m3 dual outdoor aerosol smog chamber facility. The model adequately simulates the decay of toluene, the nitric oxide (NO) to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) conversion and ozone formation. It also provides a reasonable prediction of SOA production under different conditions that range from 15 to 300 μg m−3. Speciation of simulated aerosol material shows that up to 70% of the aerosol mass comes from oligomers and polymers depending on initial reactant concentrations. The dominant particle-phase species predicted by the mechanism are glyoxal oligomers, ketene oligomers from the photolysis of the toluene OH reaction product 2-methyl-2,4-hexadienedial, organic nitrates, methyl nitro-phenol analogues, C7 organic peroxides, acylperoxy nitrates and for the low-concentration experiments, unsaturated hydroxy nitro acids.  相似文献

Aqueous OH radical oxidation of methylglyoxal in clouds and wet aerosols is a potentially important global and regional source of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). We quantify organic acid products of the aqueous reaction of methylglyoxal (30–3000 μM) and OH radical (approx. 4 × 10?12 M), model their formation in the reaction vessel and investigate how the starting concentrations of precursors and the presence of acidic sulfate (0–840 μM) affect product formation. Predicted products were observed. The predicted temporal evolution of oxalic acid, pyruvic acid and total organic carbon matched observations at cloud relevant concentrations (30 μM), validating this methylglyoxal cloud chemistry, which is currently being implemented in some atmospheric models of SOA formation. The addition of sulfuric acid at cloud relevant concentrations had little effect on oxalic acid yields. At higher concentrations (3000 μM), predictions deviate from observations. Larger carboxylic acids (≥C4) and other high molecular weight products become increasingly important as concentration increases, suggesting that small carboxylic acids are the major products in clouds while larger carboxylic acids and oligomers are important products in wet aerosols.  相似文献

A chemical mass balance of fine aerosol (<1.5 μm AED) collected at three European sites was performed with reference to the water solubility of the different aerosol classes of components. The sampling sites are characterised by different pollution conditions and aerosol loading in the air. Aspvreten is a background site in central Sweden, K-puszta is a rural site in the Great Hungarian Plain and San Pietro Capofiume is located in the polluted Po Valley, northern Italy. The average fine aerosol mass concentration was 5.9 μg m-3 at the background site Aspvreten, 24 μg m-3 at the rural K-puszta and 38 μg m-3 at the polluted site San Pietro Capofiume. However, a similarly high soluble fraction of the aerosol (65–75%) was measured at the three sites, while the percentage of water soluble organic species with respect to the total soluble mass was much higher at the background site (ca. 50%) than at the other two sites (ca. 25%). A very high fraction (over 70%) of organic compounds in the aerosol consisted of polar species. The presence of water soluble macromolecular compounds was revealed in the samples from K-puszta and San Pietro Capofiume. At both sites these species accounted for between ca. 20–50% of the water soluble organic fraction. The origin of the compounds was tentatively attributed to biomass combustion.  相似文献

This contribution presents characterisation efforts of the gas phase and particle phase main components during the FEBUKO orographic cloud passage experiments in autumn 2001 and 2002 in the Thüringer Wald (Germany). Three events out of a total of 14 were chosen as the best events considering all meteorological conditions. Gas phase and size-segregated particle phase data obtained from physical (dry size distribution) and chemical (particle mass, main ions, OCEC, and water-soluble metals) measurements are presented for the upwind site. The total particulate mass concentration (PM10) was found to be between 8 and 17 μg m−3. Particles with an aerodynamic diameter up to 1.2 μm contribute about 80% of the mass concentration. About 90% of the total ion concentration consists of nitrate, sulphate and ammonium. The OC concentration in all three events amounts to about 1.0 μg m−3, whereas EC concentrations were between 0.40 and 1.0 μg m−3. The contribution of OC and EC to stage mass ranged from 5% to 35% and from 2% to 17%, respectively. The water content of particles was estimated to be 16–18%. Physical and chemical mass closure is discussed in detail and the results are in a reasonable agreement. The complex data set obtained for each event can be used in the initialisation of models for the multiphase processes during and after the cloud passage of the characterised air mass.  相似文献

A series of 90 experiments were conducted in the UC Riverside/CE-CERT environmental chamber to evaluate the impact of water vapor and dissolved salts on secondary organic aerosol formation for cyclohexene ozonolysis. Water vapor (low – 30 ± 2% RH, medium – 46 ± 2% RH, high – 63 ± 2% RH) was found to directly participate in the atmospheric chemistry altering the composition of the condensing species, thus increasing total organic aerosol formation by ~22% as compared to the system under dry (<0.1% RH) conditions. Hygroscopicity measurements also indicate that the organic aerosol composition is altered in the presence of gaseous water. These results are consistent with water vapor reacting with the crigee intermediate in the gas phase resulting in increased aldehyde formation. The addition of dissolved salts ((NH4)2SO4, NH4HSO4, CaCl2, NaCl) had minimal effect; only the (NH4)2SO4 and NaCl were found to significantly impact the system with ~10% increase in total organic aerosol formation. These results indicate that the organics may be partitioning to an outer organic shell as opposed to into the aqueous salt. Hygroscopicity measurements indicate that the addition of salts does not alter the aerosol composition for the dry or water vapor system.  相似文献

We investigate how a recently suggested pathway for production of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) affects the consistency of simulated organic aerosol (OA) mass in a global three-dimensional model of oxidant-aerosol chemistry (GEOS-Chem) versus surface measurements from the interagency monitoring of protected visual environments (IMPROVE) network. Simulations in which isoprene oxidation products contribute to SOA formation, with a yield of 2.0% by mass reduce a model bias versus measured OA surface mass concentrations. The resultant increase in simulated OA mass concentrations during summer of 0.6–1.0 μg m−3 in the southeastern United States reduces the regional RMSE to 0.88 μg m−3 from 1.26 μg m−3. Spring and fall biases are also reduced, with little change in winter when isoprene emissions are negligible.  相似文献

In order to investigate the secondary organic aerosol (SOA) response to changes in biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions in the future atmosphere and how important will SOA be relative to the major anthropogenic aerosol component (sulfate), the global three-dimensional chemistry/transport model TM3 has been used. Emission estimates of biogenic VOC (BVOC) and anthropogenic gases and particles from the literature for the year 2100 have been adopted.According to our present-day model simulations, isoprene oxidation produces 4.6 Tg SOA yr−1, that is less than half of the 12.2 Tg SOA yr−1 formed by the oxidation of other BVOC. In the future, nitrate radicals and ozone become more important than nowadays, but remain minor oxidants for both isoprene and aromatics. SOA produced by isoprene is estimated to almost triple, whereas the production from other BVOC more than triples. The calculated future SOA burden change, from 0.8 Tg at present to 2.0 Tg in the future, is driven by changes in emissions, oxidant levels and pre-existing particles. The non-linearity in SOA formation and the involved chemical and physical feedbacks prohibit the quantitative attribution of the computed changes to the above-mentioned individual factors. In 2100, SOA burden is calculated to exceed that of sulfate, indicating that SOA might become more important than nowadays. These results critically depend on the biogenic emissions and thus are subject to the high uncertainty associated with these emissions estimated due to the insufficient knowledge on plant response to carbon dioxide changes. Nevertheless, they clearly indicate that the change in oxidants and primary aerosol caused by human activities can contribute as much as the change in BVOC emissions to the increase of the biogenic SOA production in the future atmosphere.  相似文献

We use a global 3-D atmospheric chemistry model (GEOS-Chem) to simulate surface and aircraft measurements of organic carbon (OC) aerosol over eastern North America during summer 2004 (ICARTT aircraft campaign), with the goal of evaluating the potential importance of a new secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation pathway via irreversible uptake of dicarbonyl gases (glyoxal and methylglyoxal) by aqueous particles. Both dicarbonyls are predominantly produced in the atmosphere by isoprene, with minor contributions from other biogenic and anthropogenic precursors. Dicarbonyl SOA formation is represented by a reactive uptake coefficient γ = 2.9 × 10?3 and takes place mainly in clouds. Surface measurements of OC aerosol at the IMPROVE network in the eastern U.S. average 2.2 ± 0.7 μg C m?3 for July–August 2004 with little regional structure. The corresponding model concentration is 2.8 ± 0.8 μg C m?3, also with little regional structure due to compensating spatial patterns of biogenic, anthropogenic, and fire contributions. Aircraft measurements of water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) aerosol average 2.2 ± 1.2 μg C m?3 in the boundary layer (<2 km) and 0.9 ± 0.8 μg C m?3 in the free troposphere (2–6 km), consistent with the model (2.0 ± 1.2 μg C m?3 in the boundary layer and 1.1 ± 1.0 μg C m?3 in the free troposphere). Source attribution for the WSOC aerosol in the model boundary layer is 27% anthropogenic, 18% fire, 28% semi-volatile SOA, and 27% dicarbonyl SOA. In the free troposphere it is 13% anthropogenic, 37% fire, 23% semi-volatile SOA, and 27% dicarbonyl SOA. Inclusion of dicarbonyl SOA doubles the SOA contribution to WSOC aerosol at all altitudes. Observed and simulated correlations of WSOC aerosol with other chemical variables measured aboard the aircraft suggest a major SOA source in the free troposphere compatible with the dicarbonyl mechanism.  相似文献

Aerosol optical and microphysical parameters from severe haze events observed in October 2005 at Gwangju, Korea (35.10°N, 126.53°E) were determined from the ground using a multi-wavelength Raman lidar, a sunphotometer, and a real-time carbon particle analyzer and from space using satellite retrievals. Two different aerosol types were identified based on the variability of optical characteristics for different air mass conditions. Retrievals of microphysical properties of the haze from the Raman lidar indicated distinct light-absorbing characteristics for different haze aerosols originating from eastern and northern China (haze) and eastern Siberia (forest-fire smoke). The haze transported from the west showed moderately higher absorbing characteristics (SSA = 0.90 ± 0.03, 532 nm) than from the northern direction (SSA = 0.96 ± 0.02). The organic/elemental carbon (OC/EC) ratio varied between 2.5 ± 0.4 and 4.1 ± 0.7.  相似文献

Increasing production and disposal of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays for smartphones and tablets may have impact on the environment depending on the aqueous solubility of the pertinent chemicals. Here, aqueous solubilities are presented for several compounds, mostly aromatic amines, used as hole transport materials in the OLED displays. Solute selection includes 1,4-bis(diphenylamino)benzene, tetra-N-phenylbenzidine, 4,4′-bis(N-carbazolyl)-1,1′-biphenyl, 1,3,5-tris(diphenylamino)benzene, and 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene. The solubilities are those in pressurized hot water (PHW), i.e., measured at elevated temperature (up to 260 °C) and pressure. The semi-quantitative estimates of room-temperature solubilities of the solutes have been obtained from extrapolations of the solubilities in PHW. For the compounds studied, the estimated aqueous solubilities at room temperature do not exceed 2 × 10?11 g of the solute per 1 kg of water. Aqueous solubilities of triphenylamine have also been measured and used to upgrade a recent group-contribution model of aqueous solubilities of organic nonelectrolytes with the parameters for the nitrogen atom in aromatic amines.  相似文献

A laboratory study was conducted to examine formation of secondary organic aerosols. A smog chamber system was developed for studying gas–aerosol interactions in a dynamic flow reactor. These experiments were conducted to investigate the fate of gas and aerosol phase compounds generated from hydrocarbon–nitrogen oxide (HC/NOx) mixtures irradiated in the presence of fine (<2.5 μm) particulate matter. The goal was to determine to what extent photochemical oxidation products of aromatic hydrocarbons contribute to secondary organic aerosol formation through uptake on pre-existing inorganic aerosols in the absence of liquid water films. Irradiations were conducted with toluene, p-xylene, and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene in the presence of NOx and ammonium sulfate aerosol, with propylene added to enhance the production of radicals in the system. The secondary organic aerosol yields were determined by dividing the mass concentration of organic fraction of the aerosol collected on quartz filters by the mass concentration of the aromatic hydrocarbon removed by reaction. The mass concentration of the organic fraction was obtained by multiplying the measured organic carbon concentration by 2.0, a correction factor that takes into account the presence of hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen atoms in the organic species. The mass concentrations of ammonium, nitrate, and sulfate concentrations as well as the total mass of the aerosols were measured. A reasonable mass balance was found for each of the aerosols. The largest secondary organic aerosol yield of 1.59±0.40% was found for toluene at an organic aerosol concentration of 8.2 μm−3, followed by 1.09±0.27% for p-xylene at 6.4 μg m−3, and 0.41±0.10% for 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene at 2.0 μg m−3. In general, these results agree with those reported by Odum et al. and appear to be consistent with the gas–aerosol partitioning theory developed by Pankow. The presence of organic in the aerosol did not affect significantly the hygroscopic properties of the aerosol.  相似文献

This paper discusses the extent of Black Carbon (BC) radiative forcing in the total aerosol atmospheric radiative forcing over Pune, an urban site in India. Collocated measurements of aerosol optical properties, chemical composition and BC were carried out for a period of six months (during October 2004 to May 2005) over the site. Observed aerosol chemical composition in terms of water soluble, insoluble and BC components were used in Optical Properties of Aerosols and Clouds (OPAC) to derive aerosol optical properties of composite aerosols. The BC fraction alone was used in OPAC to derive optical properties of BC aerosols. The aerosol optical properties for composite and BC aerosols were separately used in SBDART model to derive direct aerosol radiative forcing due to composite and BC aerosols. The atmospheric radiative forcing for composite aerosols were found to be +35.5, +32.9 and +47.6 Wm?2 during post-monsoon, winter and pre-monsoon seasons, respectively. The average BC mass fraction found to be 4.83, 6.33 and 4 μg m?3 during the above seasons contributing around 2.2 to 5.8% to the total aerosol load. The atmospheric radiative forcing estimated due to BC aerosols was +18.8, +23.4 and +17.2 Wm?2, respectively during the above seasons. The study suggests that even though BC contributes only 2.2–6% to the total aerosol load; it is contributing an average of around 55% to the total lower atmospheric aerosol forcing due to strong radiative absorption, and thus enhancing greenhouse warming.  相似文献

Physical and chemical properties of submicrometer aerosol particles were measured in summer 2004 (June/July) and winter 2005 (January/February) in Beijing, Peoples Republic of China, using a Twin-Differential Mobility Particle Sizer (T-DMPS), a Hygroscopicity-Tandem Differential Mobility Analyzer (H-TDMA), and a Micro Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactor (MOUDI). Particle number–size distributions were measured in the diameter range Dp = 3–800 nm and hygroscopic properties were determined at initial dry particle diameters of Dpj (j = 30, 50, 80, 150, 250, and 350 nm) at a relative humidity (RH) of 90%. Hygroscopic properties were compared with chemical analyses of aerosol samples taken with the MOUDI. Based on the hygroscopicity data, the total hygroscopic particle volume was modeled, including dependence on dry particle size, season and level of pollution using a simple approach.Overall, the chemical analysis showed ammonium sulfate to be the major inorganic component of the urban submicrometer aerosol in Beijing along with relatively high fractions of elemental carbon (10–25%) and organic matter (15–60%) depending on particle size and season. The hygroscopic growth distributions (H-TDMA) subdivided the aerosol population into three different groups of particles with varying growth factors depending on dry particle size, namely nearly hydrophobic (growth factor = 0.96–1.07), less hygroscopic (1.06–1.29) and more hygroscopic (1.26–1.62).Hydrophobic particle fractions indicating freshly emitted soot/carbonaceous particles varied between 10 and 32% depending on dry particle size and season. During heavily polluted times, a decreasing number of hydrophobic particle fractions indicated that the urban submicrometer aerosol in Beijing was highly influenced by more aged aerosol transported from the industrial regions around Beijing containing sulfate as a major component.Based on model calculations, the urban submicrometer aerosol in Beijing showed strong compositional variations. The calculated total hygroscopic volume fractions varied between 16 and 65% depending on size, level of pollution and season.  相似文献

During April 1999 and March 2000, intensive field campaigns were performed on a mid-level mountain (Rax, 1644 m a.s.l.) in Central Europe both under out-of-cloud and in-cloud conditions. The black carbon (BC) content of both aerosol and cloud water as well as BC scavenging efficiencies of Rax clouds were measured. As a tracer for the non-carbonaceous aerosol, sulfate was used. Although BC concentrations on Rax were low (April 1999 out-of-cloud average: 0.43 μg/m3, March 2000: 0.72 μg/m3), the BC mass fraction of the aerosol was fairly high (1999: 3.5%, 2000: 6.4%). Average BC concentrations in cloud water were 1.09 μg/ml (1999) and 1.4 μg/ml (2000). These values are far higher than literature values, but comparable to those found in an earlier study (J. Geophys. Res. 105 (D20) (2000) 24637) at a high-level mountain (Sonnblick, 3106 m a.s.l.) some 200 km distant from Rax. The average BC scavenging efficiency of the Rax clouds in March 2000 was 0.54. The increase of scavenging efficiency with increasing liquid water content of the clouds found earlier on Sonnblick for sulfate and aerosol carbon (J. Atmos. Chem 35 (2000) 33), organic carbon (J. Geophys. Res. 105 (2000) 19857), and BC (J. Geophys. Res. 105 (D20) (2000) 24637) was also confirmed on Rax.  相似文献

Model studies on the aqueous phase radical-driven processing of carbonyl compounds and acids in clouds and deliquescent particles were performed. The model exposed that aqueous radical conversions of carbonyl compounds and its oxidation products can contribute potentially to the formation of functionalised organic acids. The main identified C2–C4 organic gas phase precursors are ethylene glycol, glycolaldehyde, glyoxal, methylglyoxal and 1,4-butenedial. The aqueous phase is shown to contribute significantly with about 93%/63%, 47%/8%, 31%/4%, 7%/4%, 36%/8% to the multiphase oxidative fate of these compounds under remote/urban conditions. Interestingly, the studies revealed that aqueous chemical processing is not only limited to in-cloud conditions but also proceeds in deliquescent particle phase with significant fluxes. Oxalic acid is shown to be formed preferably in deliquescent particles subsequent to the in-cloud oxidations. Mean aqueous phase oxalate formation fluxes of about 12, 42 and 0.4 ng m?3 h?1 in the remote, urban and maritime scenario, respectively. Additionally, the turnovers of the oxidation of organics such as methylglyoxal by NO3 radical reactions are identified to be competitive to their OH pendants. At the current state of CAPRAM, mean C2–C4 in-cloud oxidation fluxes of about 0.12 and 0.5 μg m?3 h?1 are modelled under the idealised remote and urban cloud conditions. Finally, turnovers from radical oxidations were compared with those of thermal reactions. It is demonstrated that, based on the sparse kinetic data available organic accretion reaction might be of interest in just a few cases for cloud droplets and aqueous particles but generally do not reach the oxidative conversion rates of the main radical oxidants OH and NO3. Interestingly, oxidation reactions of H2O2 are shown to be competitive to the OH radical conversions in cases when H2O2 is not readily used up by the S(IV) oxidation.  相似文献

The CIT/UCD three-dimensional source-oriented externally mixed air quality model is tested during a severe photochemical smog episode (Los Angeles, 7–9 September 1993) using two different chemical mechanisms that describe the formation of ozone and secondary reaction products. The first chemical mechanism is the secondary organic aerosol mechanism (SOAM) that is based on SAPRC90 with extensions to describe the formation of condensable organic products. The second chemical mechanism is the caltech atmospheric chemistry mechanism (CACM) that is based on SAPRC99 with more detailed treatment of organic oxidation products. The predicted ozone concentrations from the CIT/UCD/SOAM and the CIT/UCD/CACM models agree well with the observations made at most monitoring sites with a mean normalized error of approximately 0.4–0.5. Good agreement is generally found between the predicted and measured NOx concentrations except during morning rush hours of 6–10 am when NOx concentrations are under-predicted at most locations. Total VOC concentrations predicted by the two chemical mechanisms agree reasonably well with the observations at three of the four sites where measurements were made. Gas-phase concentrations of phenolic compounds and benzaldehyde predicted by the UCD/CIT/CACM model are higher than the measured concentrations whereas the predicted concentrations of other aromatic compounds approximately agree with the measured values. The fine airborne particulate matter mass concentrations (PM2.5) predicted by the UCD/CIT/SOAM and UCD/CIT/CACM models are slightly greater than the observed values during evening hours and lower than observed values during morning rush hours. The evening over-predictions are driven by an excess of nitrate, ammonium ion and sulfate. The UCD/CIT/CACM model predicts higher nighttime concentrations of gaseous precursors leading to the formation of particulate nitrate than the UCD/CIT/SOAM model. Elemental carbon and total organic mass are under-predicted by both models during morning rush hour periods. When this latter finding is combined with the NOx under-predictions that occur at the same time, it suggests a systematic bias in the diesel engine emissions inventory. The mass of particulate total organic carbon is under-predicted by both the UCD/CIT/SOAM and UCD/CIT/CACM models during afternoon hours. Elemental carbon concentrations generally agree with the observations at this time. Both the UCD/CIT/SOAM and UCD/CIT/CACM models predict low concentrations of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) (<3.5 μg m−3) indicating that both models could be missing SOA formation pathways. The representation of the aerosol as an internal mixture vs. a source-oriented external mixture did not significantly affect the predicted concentrations during the current study.  相似文献

Daily and seasonal variations in dry and wet atmospheric nitrogen fluxes have been studied during four campaigns between 2004 and 2006 at a coastal site of the Southern North Sea at De Haan (Belgium) located at coordinates of 51.1723° N and 3.0369° E. Concentrations of inorganic N-compounds were determined in the gaseous phase, size-segregated aerosol (coarse, medium, and fine), and rainwater samples. Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) was quantified in rainwater. The daily variations in N-fluxes of compounds were evaluated with air-mass backward trajectories, classified into the main air-masses arriving at the sampling site (i.e., continental, North Sea, and Atlantic/UK/Channel).The three, non-episodic campaigns showed broadly consistent fluxes, but during the late summer campaign exceptionally high episodic N-deposition was observed. The average dry and wet fluxes for non-episodic campaigns amounted to 2.6 and 4.0 mg N m?2 d?1, respectively, whereas during the episodic late summer period these fluxes were as high as 5.2 and 6.2 mg N m?2 d?1, respectively.Non-episodic seasons/campaigns experienced average aerosol fluxes of 0.9–1.4 mg N m?2 d?1. Generally, the contribution of aerosol NH4+ was more significant in the medium and fine particulate fractions than that of aerosol NO3?, whereas the latter contributed more in the coarse fraction, especially in continental air-masses. During the dry mid-summer campaign, the DON contributed considerably (~15%) to the total N-budget.Exceptionally high episodic aerosol-N inputs have been observed for the late summer campaign, with especially high deposition rates of 3.6 and 2.9 mg N m?2 d?1 for Atlantic/UK/Channel and North Sea-continental (mixed) air-masses, respectively. During this pollution episode, the flux of NH4+ was dominating in each aerosol fraction/air-mass, except for coarse continental aerosols. High deposition of gaseous-N was also observed in this campaign with an average total N-flux of 2–2.5-times higher than in other campaigns.  相似文献

Optical methods for counting and sizing cloud droplets and a wide range of cloud water sampling methods were used to characterize the atmospheric liquid phase during the FEBUKO cloud experiments. Results near cloud base as well as more than 300 m inside the hill cap clouds are presented, reflecting their inhomogeneous nature. The cloud droplet number varies from 50 to 1000 cm−3 and drop sizes between 1 and 20 μm diameter are most frequent. Variations in the liquid water content (LWC) and in the total ion content (TIC) are much smaller when the measurement position is deeper in the cloud. Near cloud base variability in updraft strength and, near cloud top, entrainment processes (droplet evaporation by mixing with drier air, aerosol and gas scavenging) disturb the adiabatic conditions and produce large variations in LWC and chemical composition. Six different active cloud water collectors and impactors were running side by side; they differ in the principle of sampling, in the throughput of cloudy air per unit time and in the calculated 50% cutoff diameter, which influence also their sampling efficiency. Two of them are designed to collect cloud water in two droplet size fractions. Three cloud events were selected by the FEBUKO team for detailed cloud physical and chemical analyses because they serve best the modelling demands concerning connected flow between the upwind, summit and downwind sites for process studies. Frequency distributions of the LWC and, also of the cloud base height are given as statistical parameters for both FEBUKO experiments.  相似文献
