Sewage treatment works are one of the major sources that cause atmospheric odour pollution. The increase in the number of complaints about odour nuisance is due to the increase in environmental concerns. Unfortunately, the legislation on odour nuisance from sewage treatment works is very limited. In order to determine suitable thresholds on which to base legal standards, reliable and efficient odour measurement methods need to be defined. A chemical sensor array was developed for the purpose of measuring wastewater odour. This paper describes the development of the chemical sensor system which is specifically tuned to odours of wastewater origin and which can give an electronic measure of the wastewater odours. Odour emissions from a wastewater treatment facility were detected by using a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor array. The array consists of nine sensor elements, which were coated with different materials. In this paper, the usage of these novel instruments in the water industry was shown. 相似文献

This paper examined the factors that might influence participating farmers’ willingness-to-pay for the Tree Farming Fund (TFF)
established for sustainable development of participatory forest management (PFM). Information on willingness-to-pay, socioeconomic
characteristics, and attitudes of participating farmers toward TFF were obtained from interviews with 581 participating farmers.
Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the dominant factors that might influence participating farmers’ willingness-to-pay
for the TFF. The results showed that participating farmers’ willingness-to-pay was significantly affected by (i) family income;
(ii) education level; (iii) confidence that his aspired benefits will be received; (iv) agreement with the statement that
‘PFM is sustainable under the present state of management’; (v) agreement with the statement that ‘PFM is a good strategy
for forest conservation’; and (vi) knowledge of PFM strategies. Thus, participating farmers with a higher level of education,
higher income and positive attitudes toward TFF tended to express more willingness-to-pay. Establishment of TFF could be an
effective strategy in implementing sustainable PFM in Bangladesh. For this strategy to succeed, however, active partnership
between the participating farmers and Forest Department is required. Participating farmers’ attitudes toward TFF should therefore
be taken into consideration as should the results of this study, which are important indicators of participating farmers’
positive attitudes toward TFF. 相似文献

A sub-surface desert water harvester was constructed in the sagebrush steppe habitat of south-central Idaho, U.S.A. The desert
water harvester utilizes a buried micro-catchment and three buried storage tanks to augment water for wildlife during the
dry season. In this region, mean annual precipitation (MAP) ranges between about 150–250 mm (6″–10″), 70% of which falls during
the cold season, November to May. Mid-summer through early autumn, June through October, is the dry portion of the year. During
this period, the sub-surface water harvester provides supplemental water for wildlife for 30–90 days, depending upon the precipitation
that year. The desert water harvester is constructed with commonly available, “over the counter” materials. The micro-catchment
is made of a square-shaped, 20 mL. “PERMALON” polyethylene pond liner (approximately 22.9 m × 22.9 m = 523 m2) buried at a depth of about 60 cm. A PVC pipe connects the harvester with two storage tanks and a drinking trough. The total
capacity of the water harvester is about 4777 L (1262 U.S. gallons) which includes three underground storage tanks, a trough
and pipes. The drinking trough is refined with an access ramp for birds and small animals. The technology is simple, cheap,
and durable and can be adapted to other uses, e.g. drip irrigation, short-term water for small livestock, poultry farming
etc. The desert water harvester can be used to concentrate and collect water from precipitation and run-off in semi-arid and
arid regions. Water harvested in such a relatively small area will not impact the ground water table but it should help to
grow small areas of crops or vegetables to aid villagers in self-sufficiency. 相似文献

The analysis of data of the ground-level ozone concentration and accumulated ozone exposure over a threshold of 40 ppb (AOT40)
in the rural areas of Lithuania is presented. Trends in the annual ozone mean, 95{th} and 25{th} percentiles were determined
as statistically not significant at Preila and Rugsteliskes sites during the 1994hbox{–}2004 period. Trends in the ozone concentration
and its percentiles in the air masses arriving to Preila station in “polluted” and “unpolluted” sectors have been examined.
Statistically significant changes in the ozone annual mean and 25th percentile were found in air masses in both “polluted”
and “unpolluted” sectors in the 1988hbox{–}2002 period. The trend analysis in the ozone monthly mean and percentiles for each
month of the year revealed the main changes in the ozone level in both sectors during January-May. Insignificant downward
trends in monthly 95th percentile in “unpolluted” sector and upward trends in “polluted” sector were found during summer months.
Values of AOT40 for the protection of forests as well as crops and semi-natural vegetation were determined during the 1994–2004
period. The estimated AOT40 values for the protection of forests were lower than the critical level at Lithuanian rural sites
but AOT40 values for the protection of crops and semi-natural vegetation were found to be higher than the critical level at

The Great Basin Desert lies between the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the west and the Rocky Mountains to the east. Nearly 60%
of the area’s deserts and mountains (roughly 30 million ha) are managed by the U. S. Department of Interior’s Bureau of Land
Management. This area is characterized by low annual precipitation, diverse desert plant communities, and local economies
that depend on the products (livestock grazing, recreation, mining, etc.) produced by these lands. The ecological and economic
stability of the Great Basin is increasingly at risk due to the expansion of fire-prone invasive species and increase in wildfires.
To stem this loss of productivity and diversity in the Great Basin, the BLM initiated the “Great Basin Restoration Initiative”
in 1999 after nearly 0.7 million ha of the Great Basin burned in wildfires. The objective of the Great Basin Restoration Initiative
is to restore plant community diversity and structure by improving resiliency to disturbance and resistance to invasive species
over the long-term. To accomplish this objective, a strategic plan has been developed that emphasizes local participation
and reliance on appropriate science to ensure that restoration is accomplished in an economical and ecologically appropriate
manner. If restoration in the Great Basin is not successful, desertification and the associated loss of economic stability
and ecological integrity will continue to threaten the sustainability of natural resources and people in the Great Basin. 相似文献

Evaluation Score and Interpretation Index for the Ecological Quality of Running Waters in Central and Northern Hellas 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The present study aims at creating an evaluation system for the quality of running waters, based on the analysis of benthic
macroinvertebrate records from Hellenic rivers (473 samples from 8 river basins). The proposed evaluation system (Hellenic
Evaluation Score and its Interpretation Index) may be used for waters sampled with the cost effective semi-quantitative sampling
method of “3 min kick-sweep” and requires benthic macroinvertebrates to be identified to the taxonomic level of family. Though
resulting from a modification of the Spanish score BMWP, it differs from it in the following characteristics: a) it includes
the relative abundance of benthic macroinvertebrates and b) it takes into consideration the habitat diversity of the studied
site, classifying it as “poor” or “rich”, based on some parameters of the System B of the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EU).
Its interpretation is also based on a five-scaled classification system, consistent with the provisions of the same Directive. 相似文献

Although satellite radar altimetry was developed and optimized for open oceans, it has been used to monitor variations in the level of inland water-bodies such as lakes and rivers. Here, for the first time, we have further used the altimetry-derived variation of water level for estimating the fluctuation of water storage as an addition to the present in situ water storage estimation systems to be used in remote areas and in emergency situation such as in the events flooding monitoring and for studying the effect of climate change. Lake Dongting, the second largest lake in China, influenced frequently by flooding, was, therefore, chosen to demonstrate the potential of the technique. By using the concept of an “assumed reference point”, we converted Topex/Poseidon satellite altimetry data on water level variations in Lake Dongting to “water level” data. The “water level” time-series data and in situ water storage were used to establish a rating curve. From the rating curve, we converted data on “water level” derived from seven years (1993–1999) of Topex/Poseidon data to actual water storage in Lake Dongting. The result reveals that the seasonal and annual fluctuations of water storage occurred during the 1990s with a more frequent flooding at the late 1990s' especially the flooding in whole catchment level in 1998 and 1999. The study supports the usefulness of satellite altimetry for dense and continuous monitoring of the temporal variations in water dynamic in moderate to large lakes. 相似文献

Participatory Integrated Assessment (PIA) is an approach which aims at developing methods which allow to combine evaluations
of experts and lay people in the field of Integrated Assessment. Thus, policy recommendations derived from PIA exercises are
informed by scientific judgments and by valuations of “non-scientists”. For any PIA methodology the provision of insights,
facts and figures about the policy problem at hand is crucial.
In this paper we describe a PIA methodology which combines the social science research instrument “focus group” with a specific
computer information tool, the “Personal CO2 Calculator” (PCC). The tool supports citizens in discussing and recommending measures on climate change policy. Based on
our experiences, we plead for information instruments that are tuned to and assist concrete target groups with their specific
interests. This helps that policy recommendations derived from PIA exercises are based on both scientific knowledge as well
as citizens' and stakeholders' policy preferences.

Continuous, in situ monitoring of air, water and land quality is fundamental to most environmental applications. Low cost and non-invasive chemical sensor arrays provide a suitable technique for in situ monitoring. Their ability and performance under realistic conditions is discussed in this paper. Published studies report promising results despite a number of limitations that are associated with both the technology itself and its application in ever changing ambient conditions. Early investigations include the analysis of single substances as well as odour and wastewater organic load monitoring. Reported applications typically highlight the sensitivity of the currently available sensors to changes in temperature, humidity and flow rate. Two types of approaches are recommended to deal with these effects: either working under fixed experimental conditions or measuring the external parameters to numerically compensate for their change. The main challenge associated with the use of non-specific sensor arrays lies in establishing a relationship between the measured multivariate signals and the standards metrics that are traditionally used for quality assessment of gas mixtures. For instance, odour monitoring requires calibration against olfactometric measurements while investigations of wastewater samples still need to be correlated with organic pollution parameters such as BOD, COD or TOC. On the other hand, results obtained in the field have demonstrated how sensor arrays can be readily used as simple alarm devices or as early warning systems based on a general air/water quality index. 相似文献

Integrated Environmental Assessment (IEA) can be loosely defined as policy‐relevant, multidisciplinary research on environmental
issues. Many, diverse activities in this broad field are ongoing, but the approaches lack the structure, standardization and
quality control common in disciplinary research. IEA has three stages: “structuring the problem”, “analyzing the problem”
and “communicating the findings and insights”. Each stage has its inherent difficulties, not least because problem definition
and analysis are neither separable nor unambiguous nor unique. Difficulties are exacerbated in the first and third stages
by the necessity for science and policy to work together. Difficulties are exacerbated in the second stage by the necessity
of different scientific disciplines to cooperate. The European Forum on Integrated Environmental Assessment is an initiative
to improve scientific quality and policy‐relevance of IEA, by organizing two series of workshops, one looking in detail at
current and desired scientific practices, the other reviewing current and establishing further applications of IEA to environmental
issues in Europe.

Quality of life in urban space has become an increasingly common problem arising from cooperation between various stakeholders, especially in the context of increasing odour nuisance. That is why it is extremely important to know and shape the expectations and perceptions of residents regarding quality of life by accepting the place of residence, especially in the context of the development of cities and urban areas.The analysis of the previous research has revealed a research gap that results from the imperfections of existing odour measurement methods and the lack of an objective measurement methodology that would allow for objectification of the subjective feelings of people to the extent of perception of unpleasant odours.The purpose of this article is to verify the hypothesis about the possibility of objectifying the assessment of odour nuisance based on the comparison of quantitative research results based on the opinions of residents and sensory tests. The specific objective is to verify residents' assessments of odour nuisance by an expert team and identify a gap in those assessments.The analysis of discrepancies gives the opportunity to identify the imperfections of various research methods and look for ways to improve them. The analysis of compliance of results, on the other hand, gives the opportunity to objectify measurements and build a methodology that may be used for the purpose of assessing odour nuisance by various stakeholders.Systematic measurement of odours in a public space may serve the basis for resolving local conflicts, creating maps of odour nuisance, assessing the attractiveness of places to live, work, spending free time and tourist value, as well as conscious actions of public authorities in shaping local policies in a specific area. 相似文献

The concentrations, distribution and sources of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in 30 agricultural
soil and 16 vegetable samples collected from subtropical Shunde area, an important manufacturing center in China. The total
PAHs ranged from 33.7 to 350 μg/kg in soils, and 82 to 1,258 μg/kg in vegetables. The most abundant individual PAHs are phenanthrene,
fluoranthene, chrysene, pyrene and benzo(b)fluoranthene for soil samples, and anthracene, naphthalene, phenanthrene, pyrene
and chrysene for vegetable samples. Average vegetable–soil ratios of total PAHs were 2.20 for leafy vegetables and 1.27 for
fruity vegetables. Total PAHs in vegetable samples are not significantly correlated to those in corresponding soil samples.
Principal component analyses were conducted to distinguish samples on basis of their distribution in each town, soil type
and vegetable specie. Relatively abundant soil PAHs were found in town Jun’an, Beijiao, Chencun, Lecong and Ronggui, while
abundant vegetable PAHs were observed in town Jun’an, Lecong, Xingtan, Daliang and Chenchun. The highest level of total PAHs
were found in vegetable soil, followed by pond sediment and “stacked soil” on pond banks. The PAHs contents in leafy vegetables
are higher than those in fruity vegetables. Some PAH compound ratios suggest the PAHs derived from incomplete combustion of
petroleum, coal and refuse from power generation and ceramic manufacturing, and paint spraying on furniture, as well as sewage
irrigation from textile industries. Soil PAHs contents have significant logarithmic correlation with total organic carbon,
which demonstrates the importance of soil organic matter as sorbent to prevent losses of PAHs. 相似文献

Acadia National Park was one of the 14 sites included in the Park Research and Intensive Monitoring of Ecosystems network
(PRIMENet). For eight years the EPA monitored ultraviolet (UV) radiation at this site, with the National Park Service (NPS)
sponsoring a total climate and air monitoring station. Under the auspices of PRIMENet, research projects were initiated that
investigated the effects of UV on amphibians, determined watershed mass balances, and developed a model of deposition along
an elevational gradient. The monitoring data and research results have been used by park management to protect vegetation
and water resources from ozone and deposition. These data are now being used to develop a “vital signs” monitoring program
under the NPS’ Inventory and Monitoring Program. These data sets have been used in regional, national and international programs
to protect human health and resources from air pollution. Public outreach has been accomplished through web site resources

A water quality model (MERES) is applied in the multi-purpose reservoir of Plastiras in Greece. The model was calibrated with
limited field data using the standard trial and error procedure; next, it was applied for four scenarios of reservoir operation,
which correspond to four values of minimum water levels (MWL). Model results were combined with landscape aesthetics to establish
a “safe” MWL in the reservoir. MWL was proposed to be +784 m, a value that ensures a very good water quality by retaining
the reservoir in the status of “a little beyond oligotrophic” and a very good quality of landscape with an acceptable area
of dead zones; it also ensures an annual release of 127.5 hm3 of water within a reliability level of 90%. This quantity can be considered as acceptable from the water supply point of

Regional policies to achieve water quality goals assign a unique pollution control technology to every pollution source in
a watershed, thereby defining a watershed strategy. For watersheds with even a modest number of pollution sources and control alternatives, the decision problem has combinatorial
complexity. The perception of complexity—manifested in innumerable feasible watershed strategies—commonly induces the use
of simplifying decision heuristics and ad hoc decision rules that reduce decision complexity by limiting the choice set to
a “manageable” number of alternatives. In problems with large complex choice sets, these decision heuristics simplify decision
making by excluding the vast majority of feasible alternatives a priori. In contrast, watershed-scale optimization enables
decision makers to consider all feasible alternatives implicitly, exploiting rather than restricting the complexity of the feasible choice set. This contrast is illustrated using mixed-integer
linear programming to identify interstate watershed strategies that achieve Chesapeake Bay nutrient reduction goals for the
Potomac River Basin. The use of optimization in collaborative decision making helped refine and capture decision makers’ underlying
values and preferences in policy-relevant constraints reflecting equity and political feasibility. Optimization formulations
incorporating these constraints identified more effective and desirable management alternatives that would not otherwise have
been considered using familiar decision heuristics and traditional comparisons among a limited number of ad hoc scenarios.
Incorporating optimization in collaborative decision making generated superior watershed strategies and eased the cognitive
limitations on decision making by substituting the computational burden of solving mixed-integer linear programs for decision
makers’ cognitive burden of enumerating alternatives and scenarios for environmental systems with combinatorial complexity. 相似文献

A space of “not-implausible” scenarios for Egypt's future under climate change is defined along two dimensions. One depicts
representative climate change and climate variability scenarios that span the realm of possibility. Some would not be very
threatening. Others portend dramatic reductions in average flows into Lake Nassar and associated increases in the likelihood
of year to year shortfalls below critical coping thresholds; these would be extremely troublesome, especially if they were
cast in the context of increased political instability across the entire Nile Basin. Still others depict futures along which
relatively routine and relatively inexpensive adaptation might be anticipated. The ability to adapt to change and to cope
with more severe extremes would, however, be linked inexorably to the second set of social–political–economic scenarios. The
second dimension, defined as “anthropogenic” social/economic/political scenarios describe the holistic environment within
which the determinants of adaptive capacity for water management, agriculture, and coastal zone management must be assessed.

Annoyance produced by air pollution has been suggested as a useful proxy for determining ambient air pollution exposure. However, most of the studies, to date, have focused on nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide, with no work done on volatile organic compounds (VOC). This study is aimed at examining the associations between odour annoyance and VOC in ‘Chemical Valley’, Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. Annoyance scores were extracted from a community health survey (N?=?774), and exposures to VOC were estimated from respondents’ six-digit alphanumeric postal codes using land use regression models. Univariate analyses were used to explore the relationships between odour annoyance and modelled pollutants, whilst multivariate ordinal logistic regression was utilized to examine the determinants of odour annoyance. The results indicate that odour annoyance is significantly associated with modelled benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene and (m?+?p)?xylene (BTEX) pollutants. The findings also show that the determinants of odour annoyance in the context of VOC include gender, number of relatives in the community, perception of air pollution, community satisfaction, medical checkups, ability to cope with daily life demands and general symptoms. When compared, the analysis indicates that Sarnia residents respond to considerably lower BTEX concentrations than the allowable ‘safe’ levels in the province of Ontario. In general, the results exhibit a dose–response gradient with annoyance score increasing with rising modelled pollutant concentrations. The observed relationships suggest that odour annoyance might be a function of true exposure and may serve as a proxy for air quality and ambient air pollution monitoring. However, questionnaire-based odour annoyance scores need to be longitudinally validated across different geographical scales and pollutants if they are to be adopted at the national level. 相似文献

This paper presents a model of quality choice in the case of credence goods, i.e., when consumers cannot observe quality even after purchase. It shows that firms may voluntarily overcomply, i.e., produce high quality, even when doing so implies giving up short-run profits. This generalizes results on reputation effects derived in the IO literature for the case of experience goods. The crucial assumptions of the model are that there is a positive degree of monitoring of firms’ claims and a positive probability that the firm is of an “honest type,” i.e., always prefers to produce high quality. The result also helps explain why we see phenomena such as firms voluntarily overcomplying with environmental standards, food safety laws, etc. It is shown that overcompliance is more likely when consumers learn about all (positive and negative) monitoring results than when consumers only find out about firms that have been found cheating, as is often the case in practice. I further show that even firms that pretend to be producing high quality while really producing low quality may have an incentive to lobby for stricter monitoring. This helps explain, for example, why firms in Europe and the United States lobby for the implementation of voluntary environmental audits, third-party labeling agencies or other disclosure strategies. 相似文献
