The Juru River flows through largely urbanized areas and is grossly polluted by domestic wastes and discharges from pig farms. Other than carrying highly polluting organic materials, these wastes are also contaminated with heavy metals. To ascertain the extent of heavy metal pollution in the river, total and non-residual concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn, Mn and Fe in sediment samples collected along the river were determined. The results indicate that both the total and non-residual metal concentrations in sediments can successfully be used to identify heavy metal pollution sources. The speciation of Zn, Mn and Fe in the sediment samples were investigated using a sequential leaching technique which identifies the elements among six operationally defined host fractions: (1) exchangeable, (2) carbonate and surface-associated, (3) easily reducible, (4) moderately reducible, (5) bound to organic matter and sulphides and (6) residual. The results indicate that Zn is mainly associated with the reducible fractions. Zn and Fe found in the moderately reducible fraction are significantly correlated, indicating that iron oxides is the preferred host phase by Zn.  相似文献

The sediment in Dianchi Lake, a hypereutrophic plateau lake in southwest China, was investigated and the concentration of heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn, Pb, Fe, Mn, and Cd) in the sediment and sediment properties were determined. Their spatial distribution and sources were analyzed using multivariate statistics. The result indicated that the studied metals exhibited three distinct spatial patterns; that is, Cu, Pb, Zn, and Ni had a similar distribution, with a concentration gradient from the north to the south part of the lake; Cd and Cr presented a similar distribution; Fe and Mn presented a quite different distribution than other metals, which indicated their different sources and geochemistry processes. Correlation and cluster analysis (CA) provided origin information on these metals and the CA result was observed corresponding to those three spatial patterns. Principal component analysis further displayed metal source and driving factors; that is, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Cd, and Cr were mainly derived from anthropogenic sources, and Fe and Mn were mainly the result of natural processes. Sediment assessment was conducted using geoaccumulation index (Igeo), potential ecological risk indices, and USEPA guidelines. The result indicated that, generally, Cd was the most serious risk metal; Pb and Cu posed moderate potential ecological risk; Cr, Zn, and Ni had slight ecological risk; Fe and Mn had little risk. Comparison of the assessment tools showed that each of the methods had its limitation and could bias the result, and the combined use of the methodologies and local knowledge on lithology or metal background value of soil in the practice would give a more comprehensive understanding of the metal risk or pollution. Statistical analysis also indicated that nutrients had different impacts on Fe, Mn, and trace elements, which implied that in the assessment of metal risk, nutrients impact should be taken into consideration especially for eutrophic waters.  相似文献

The techniques of diffusive equilibrium in thin films (DET) and diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) were used in the outer section of Songkhla Lake, Thailand in order to obtain high-resolution profiles of total dissolved and labile trace metals in the sediment pore water and investigate benthic fluxes. Six DET probes and six DGT probes were deployed at the mouths of the Phawong, Samrong and U-Taphao canals. A close correspondence could be observed between the high-resolution profiles of Fe and As, revealing a close link between the reductive remobilization of Fe oxides and the reduction of As(V). Co and Ni DGT profiles showed a close correspondence with Mn, but a narrow mobilization zone. Reductive mobilization of Mn oxides and associated metals and sulfide precipitation control the behaviour of these metals. The DGT profiles of Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb show surface maximum, probably linked to organic matter degradation. Important benthic fluxes, especially for As, were found at the mouths of the U-Taphao and Phawong canals.  相似文献

The chemical forms and ecological risk of As were characterized in the sediment of the Daliao River System (DRS), which has been affected by long-term intensive industrial, urban, and agricultural activities. Twenty-seven samples of surface sediment were collected and analyzed for total As content and that of its chemical forms. The results indicated that the average total As content in the sediment was 9.83 mg kg − 1 but that the levels ranged from 1.57 to 83.09 mg kg − 1. At the sites near cities, mining sites, and the estuary of the DRS, it is likely that adverse effects on aquatic organisms occur, due to As levels in the sediment that are often higher than the threshold effect level and occasionally higher than the probable effect level. A selectively sequential extraction indicated that the majority of As in the sediment was bound to Fe oxides (62.1%), with moderate proportions of residual As (19.8%), specifically adsorbed As (17.9%), and a low proportion of non-specifically adsorbed As (1.1%). In addition, the content of Fe in the sediment was positively and significantly correlated with the contents of amorphous and crystalline Fe oxide-bound As, confirming the crucial role of Fe oxides in immobilizing high amounts of As in superficial environments. The average molar ratio of As to Fe was 1.18 × 10 − 4 in the surface sediment of the DRS, similar to that of natural Fe oxides, but much lower than that of synthesized Schwertmannite. Therefore, the release of As under reduced and low pH conditions can cause serious problems for water resources and for living organisms.  相似文献

Sediments of El-Mex Bay estuary on the southern Mediterranean Sea have been analyzed for trace metals after sediment fractionation by sequential leaching. A sequential extraction procedure was applied to identify forms of Mn, Cu, Cd, Cr, Zn and Fe. The five steps of the sequential extraction procedure partitioned metals into: CH3COONH4 extractable (F1); NaOAC carbonate extractable (F2); NH2OH.HCl/CH3COOH reducible extractable (F3); H2O2–HNO3 organic extractable (F4) and NHO3/HClO4/HF acid soluble residue (F5). Extracted concentrations of trace metals analyzed after all five steps, were found to be (μg/g) for Mn: 1930.2, Cu: 165.3, Cd: 60.9, Cr: 386.3, Zn: 2351.3 and Fe: 10895. Most of elements were found in reducible fraction except Fe found in acid soluble residue, characterizing stable compounds in sediments. Labile (non-residual) fractions of trace elements (sum of the first four fractions) were analyzed because they are more bioavailable than the residual amount. Correlation analysis was used to understand and visualize the associations between the labile fractions of trace metals and certain forms, since Fe-and Mn-oxides play an important role in trace metals sorption within aquatic systems, especially within El-Mex Bay sediments that characterized by varying metal bioavailability.  相似文献

Concentrations of Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Cd and Hg were evaluated in surface sediments of two rivers from north of Morocco, known as Souani and Mghogha rivers. Significantly higher concentrations in mg kg???1 dry weight (dw) of Mn (747.6 vs. 392.9), Cr (86.4 vs. 56.3), Zn (299.5 vs. 138.5) were found in sediment samples from Mghogha when compared with Souani river. Average concentrations of Cd and Hg in several sediment samples from both rivers were above the effect range median that predicts toxic effects to aquatic organisms. The calculation of enrichment factors showed that Mn, Cr, Cu and Ni were depleted, whereas Pb and Hg were enriched. The results of geoaccumulation index revealed that sediments of both rivers were unpolluted with most of the metals and moderately contaminated with Fe and Hg. Some of elevated concentrations of Hg, principally in Mghogha River, were due to anthropogenic sources including the direct discharges of industrial zone.  相似文献

Arsenic (As) mobilization to the groundwater of Brahmaputra floodplains was investigated in Titabor, Jorhat District, located in the North Eastern part of India. The groundwater and the aquifer geochemistry were characterized in the study area. The range of As concentration in the groundwater varies from 10 to 440 μg/l with mean concentration 210 μg/l. The groundwaters are characterized by high dissolved Fe, Mn, and HCO3 ? and low concentrations of NO3 ? and SO4 2? indicating the reduced conditions prevailing in the groundwater. In order to understand the actual mobilization processes in the area, six core drilling surrounding the two target tube wells (T1 and T2) with high As concentration (three drill-cores surrounds each tube well closely) was done. The sediment was analyzed its chemical, mineralogical, and elemental compositions. A selective sequential extraction suggested that most of the As in the sediment is bound to Fe oxides fractions (32 to 50 %) and the competition for adsorption site by anions (PO4 3?) also accounts to significant fractions of the total arsenic extracted. High variability in the extraction as well as properties of the sediment was observed due to the heterogeneity of the sediment samples with different chemical properties. The SEM and EDX results indicate the presence of Fe, Mn coating along with As for most of the sample, and the presence of As associated minerals were calculated using PHREEQC. The mobilization of As into the groundwater was anticipated to be largely controlled by the reductive dissolution of Fe oxides and partly by the competitive anions viz. PO4 3?.  相似文献

The Yamuna river is the largest tributary of the Ganges river system. It originates in the Himalayas and flows through a varied geological terrain encompassing a large basin area. Metals Fe, Mn, Pb, Zn, Cu in different chemical fractions of suspended sediments such as exchangeable, carbonates, Fe–Mn oxides, organics and residual fractions were studied. Phosphorus associated with different chemical forms are discussed. The metals are mostly associated with residual fractions in the sediments followed by organics, Fe–Mn oxides, exhangeable and carbonates. Intensive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture in the basin affects the high inorganic phosphorus content in sediments.  相似文献

This study investigates the stabilization of As in the contaminated sludge after treatment with MnO(2) or Ca(OH)(2), and the influence of the stabilizing materials on the leachability of the co-existing elements Pb and Zn. By exploiting a continuous-flow assembly facilitating a modified Wenzel's sequential extraction scheme (designed for the fractionation of arsenic), it is possible to ascertain the leachability, mobility and fractional alteration of these elements under stimulated natural (flow-through) leaching conditions. The fractionation data show that more than 80% of As, Pb and Zn in the untreated sludge are bound in the amorphous Fe oxides fraction and residual fraction. The addition of MnO(2) has only an insignificant effect on As fractional transformation, while Ca(OH)(2) caused an increase in As mobility. For Pb, the decrease in leachability was clearly visible. The extractable Pb was reduced by 18% and 40% in stabilized MnO(2) and Ca(OH)(2) sludge samples, respectively. Unlike that of Pb, the mobility of Zn was not affected by the additives used. Their fractional distribution patterns before and after the stabilization process remained the same. The ability to produce detailed leaching profiles for As and other elements (Pb, Zn, Ca, Mn and Fe) meant that elemental associations in individual fractions could be examined. From the MnO(2)-treated sludge, the coincidence of the As, Pb, Zn, Fe, and Mn peaks seems to indicate a close association of these elements in the Fe-oxides-bound fraction. Furthermore, the leaching profiles may be used as evidence of a strong affinity between these elements and added MnO(2).  相似文献
