A novel process has been developed for separation of the cellulose, i.e. cotton and viscose, from blended-fibers waste textiles. An environmentally friendly cellulose solvent, N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMMO) was used in this process for separation and pretreatment of the cellulose. This solvent was mixed with blended-fibers textiles at 120 °C and atmospheric pressure to dissolve the cellulose and separate it from the undissolved non-cellulosic fibers. Water was then added to the solution in order to precipitate the cellulose, while both water and NMMO were reused after separation by evaporation. The cellulose was then either hydrolyzed by cellulase enzymes followed by fermentation to ethanol, or digested directly to produce biogas. The process was verified by testing 50/50 polyester/cotton and 40/60 polyester/viscose-blended textiles. The polyesters were purified as fibers after the NMMO treatments, and up to 95% of the cellulose fibers were regenerated and collected on a filter. A 2-day enzymatic hydrolysis and 1-day fermentation of the regenerated cotton and viscose resulted in 48 and 50 g ethanol/g regenerated cellulose, which were 85% and 89% of the theoretical yields, respectively. This process also resulted in a significant increase of the biogas production rate. While untreated cotton and viscose fibers were converted to methane by respectively, 0.02% and 1.91% of their theoretical yields in 3 days of digestion, the identical NMMO-treated fibers resulted into about 30% of yield at the same period of time.  相似文献

Natural fibres offer an interesting alternative to petrochemical products. Reclaimed cotton is mainly used as a low cost fibre to “fill” composites used as interior parts in the automotive industry. Mechanical requirements of such composites are low and the potential of the cotton-fibre to reinforce plastics is not used adequately. This paper gives background information and discusses the use of the cotton fibres in composites compared to ramie fibres. In this study the fibre strength was tested with a Dia-Stron device, fineness was tested with Fibreshape. A roller card is well suited to process fibres to a multi layer web. Cotton and ramie fibres were embedded in epoxy resin and a bio-based resin PTP®. The composites were tested for impact and tensile properties. The results show that mechanical properties of the composites are strongly influenced by fibre properties. The data and results demonstrate the important role force-elongation characteristics of fibre play in optimising the properties of natural fibre composites. Cotton with its morphological and mechanical properties can play a more crucial role to optimise products with a view to improve the impact properties.  相似文献

Apart from conventional uses of polysaccharide materials, such as food, clothing, paper packaging and construction, new polysaccharide products and materials have been developed. This paper reviews life cycle assessment (LCA) studies in order to gain insight of the environmental profiles of polysaccharide products (e.g. viscose or natural fibre polymer composites) in comparison with their conventional counterparts (e.g. cotton or petrochemical polymers). The application areas covered are textiles, engineering materials and packing. It is found that for each stage of the life cycle (production, use phase and waste management) polysaccharide-based end products show better environmental profiles than their conventional counterparts in terms of non-renewable energy use (NREU) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Cotton is an exception, with high environmental impacts that are related to the use of fertilisers, herbicides, pesticides and high water consumption. The available literature for man-made cellulose fibres shows that they allow to reduce NREU and GHG emissions in the fibre production phase. No study has been found for the fabric production and the use phase of man-made cellulose textiles.

In this study, effect of fibre surface treatment on tensile, flexural and chemical resistance properties were studied for sisal fibre reinforced composites. Natural ligno cellulosic sisal fibre reinforced composites were prepared by different surface treatments by hand lay-up method. Fibre surface treatments were carried out to produce good interface between the fibre and the matrix to improve the mechanical properties. Fibre surface treatments were done by boiled the sisal fibres in different % of NaOH and treated the fibres in different % of NaOH, treated in acetic acid and methanol. Unsaturated polyester resin was used as the matrix for preparing the composites. For comparison, these properties for untreated sisal fibre reinforced composites were also studied. From the results it was observed that 18% aqueous NaOH boiled sisal fibre reinforced composites have higher tensile, flexural properties than other composites. Untreated sisal fibre composites show lower properties than treated composites. Chemical resistance properties indicate that all sisal fibre reinforced composites are resistance to all chemicals except carbon tetra chloride. The tests are carried out as per the ASTM standards.  相似文献

Wet oxidative regeneration of activated carbon loaded with reactive dye   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Wet Oxidative Regeneration (WOR) of powdered activated carbon (PAC) and granular activated carbon (GAC) loaded with the reactive dyes, namely chemictive brilliant blue R and cibacron turquoise blue G, was studied. Attempts were made to regenerate the loaded carbons designated now as spent carbon. A slurry (10% w/v) of spent carbon in distilled water was oxidized by wet oxidation in the temperature range of 150-250 degrees C using oxygen partial pressures between 0.69-1.38 MPa in an 1 1 SS 316 autoclave. The percent regeneration was determined from a ratio, X(RC)/X(VC), corresponding to an equilibrium adsorption capacity of regenerated carbon/equilibrium adsorption capacity of virgin carbon from an initial adsorption period of 3 h. It was observed that the regeneration mainly occurred due to the oxidation of the adsorbates taking place on the surface of carbon. It was possible to regenerate the spent GAC and PAC to the extent of more than 98% (approximately X(RC)/X(VC) > 0.98) by wet oxidation. After four consecutive cycles of adsorption and regeneration using the same stocks of GAC, carbon weight loss observed at 200 degrees C was about 40%. SEM studies of the regenerated carbon showed widening of the pores and loss of structure between the adjacent pores as compared with the virgin carbon. PAC was found to be more suitable as compared with GAC for the adsorption and wet oxidative regeneration processes to treat the aqueous solution containing lower concentration of unhydrolyzed reactive dye. The suitability of wet oxidative regeneration is demonstrated at a bench scale to treat the synthetic reactive dye solution.  相似文献

Novel lightweight composite foams based on recycled polypropylene reinforced with cellulosic fibres obtained from agricultural residues were prepared and characterized. These composites, initially prepared by melt-mixing recycled polypropylene with variable fibre concentrations (10-25 wt.%), were foamed by high-pressure CO2 dissolution, a clean process which avoids the use of chemical blowing agents. With the aim of studying the influence of the fibre characteristics on the resultant foams, two chemical treatments were applied to the barley straw in order to increase the α-cellulose content of the fibres. The chemical composition, morphology and thermal stability of the fibres and composites were analyzed. Results indicate that fibre chemical treatment and later foaming of the composites resulted in foams with characteristic closed-cell microcellular structures, their specific storage modulus significantly increasing due to the higher stiffness of the fibres. The addition of the fibres also resulted in an increase in the glass transition temperature of PP in both the solid composites and more significantly in the foams.  相似文献

Near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has been found to be one of the most important characterization tools for polymeric materials based on comparatively simple NIR-favorable chemical groups (i.e., C–H, O–H, and N–H). This paper focuses on characterizing degradation of cotton cellulosic fibers in a historical textile—‘Curtain Dress’ in the famous movie Gone With the Wind through NIR spectroscopy, and investigating morphological and molecular changes associated with appearance change such as discolorations in the same cotton textiles. In this study, we did on-site testing on the ‘Curtain Dress’ with the Brimrose Luminar 5030 NIR-analyzer and analyzed the NIR spectroscopy results at eight locations where different degrees of discoloration occurred on the dress. The study identified the wavelength bands according to NIR spectral absorbancies of the typical functional groups in cellulosic fibers such as C–H, C–O and O–H stretches, compared the absorbance intensities at three main wavelengths, and investigated discoloration in different areas via principal component analysis. The combination factor scores of the 1st and 2nd principal components, which accounted for 99.09 % variance of vibrations within various groups in a molecule measured through NIR, reflected effectively morphological changes in the fiber’s molecular structure and degrees of discolorations.  相似文献

A number of attempts have been made to recycle cotton/polyester blend woven fabrics after use; however, most of these fabrics are disposed of in landfills. Major part of these blend fabrics are not recycled due to complexity of the fibre arrangement and cannot be separated economically. This study shows that these discarded woven fabrics could be directly used as reinforcements in composites without fibre separation. Uniform alignment in the woven fabric provided consistent properties to the composites. The fabrics were reinforced by soybean-based-bioresins to produce biocomposites. The composites were analysed for mechanical, thermal, viscoelastic and morphological properties. Porosity and wettability of the composites were also evaluated. Results demonstrate that the tensile strength and modulus of over 100 and 10 MPa, respectively, can be obtained without any fibre treatment. Furthermore, impact strength over 70 kJ/m2 was obtained without any chemical treatment on fibres. The porosity of the composites produced was less than 9 vol%. Additionally, the fabrics were treated with alkali in order to improve the fibre–matrix interface and the composite properties were studied. From the economical perspective, these composites can be produced at a low cost as the major component is available for free or low cost.  相似文献

Both environmental and economic factors have driven the development of recycling routes for the increasing amount of carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) waste generated. This paper presents a review of the current status and outlook of CFRP recycling operations, focusing on state-of-the-art fibre reclamation and re-manufacturing processes, and on the commercialisation and potential applications of recycled products. It is shown that several recycling and re-manufacturing processes are reaching a mature stage, with implementations at commercial scales in operation, production of recycled CFRPs having competitive structural performances, and demonstrator components having been manufactured. The major challenges for the sound establishment of a CFRP recycling industry and the development of markets for the recyclates are summarised; the potential for introducing recycled CFRPs in structural components is discussed, and likely promising applications are investigated.  相似文献

In this article, flexural, impact and dynamic mechanical properties of the Pineapple leaf fibres (PALF) and Washingtonia trunk fibres (GW) based bio-phenolic hybrid composites were examined. The pure and hybrid composites were fabricated using the hand lay-up technique with an overall fibre weight ratio of 50% in which GW and PALF were maintained in the fibre weight ratios of 50:50, 30:70, and 70:30 denoted as 1G1P, 3G7P, and 7G3P, respectively. Hybrid composites displayed better flexural strength, flexural modulus and impact strength than the GW composites and better viscoelastic properties than the PALF composites. Results revealed that 1G1P hybrid composites exhibited 25% and 12% improvements in flexural strength and modulus compared to the GW composites. 3P7K composites showed a twofold increase in impact strength than GW composites. The storage modulus of the pure and hybrid composites declined rapidly beyond the glass transition temperature. Furthermore, it was observed that the values of storage modulus for all the composites at 150 °C were similar regardless of the composite configuration. The Peak of loss modulus was found to increase in the following order: GW?>?7G3P?>?3G7P?>?1G1P?>?PALF. Furthermore, the temperature at the peak tan delta was improved, and a reduction in the tan delta peak was observed for hybrid composites compared to the pure composites. Finally, the PALF and GW hybrid combinations can be suitable for use in various applications such as textiles, machinery part production industries, medicine, automobiles, etc.

Cellulose is naturally available most abundant biopolymer. Most of research has been focusing of extraction of cellulosic material from natural sources and waste sources. These waste sources are of two types: industrial waste and non-industrial wastes. However, industrial wastes are grabbing more interest as these could be available in enormous quantity, reduce environment pollution and also benefit commercially. To address this subject, in the present work, we have successfully converted the cellulosic wastes from viscose industry to high value materials such as Micro-crystalline cellulose (MCC) and Nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC). Furthermore, an important correlation between yield and crystallinity of produced NCC to molecular weight of cellulosic raw material was established. The above finding was characterized by different characterization techniques, such as Zeta sizer, Zeta potential and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).

A single-plant biobased composite material was prepared from fibre and matrix constituents produced from the castor plant, ricinus communis. It is shown that the mechanical properties of the castor plant fibres are comparable to those of other bast fibres and that the stiffness and strength characteristics of the castor fibre/polyamide 11 biocomposite compare well with those of other natural fibre composites. By using a biobased thermoplastic matrix material the reliance on non-renewable feedstock sources is reduced and end-of-lifetime recyclability is improved. The analysis of the environmental performance of the new castor plant composite suggests that the biobased material has great potential as a sustainable alternative replacing glass fibre-reinforced plastics.  相似文献

Biodegradable and ecologically friendly polymer materials attract great attention of many scientific groups in the world as they fit well in the sustainable development policy and are considered to be “a right thing to do” by the general public. Such polymers can be modified by the addition of different fillers, favorably of natural origin. In the paper we provide a comparison between composites based on two biodegradable polymers: poly(lactic acid)—biodegradable, natural stock polymer and poly(butylene succinate)—biodegradable polymer produced from fossil based materials. For each polymer we have prepared a series of composites with different fibres (natural: hemp and flax, and manmade: Cordenka) and different filler loadings. To fully characterize obtained materials thermal, mechanical and surface free energy measurements were performed, completed with morphology observations and an attempt to compare the experimental data for tensile measurements with values obtained using the modified rule of mixtures. The tensile results calculated using the modified rule of mixture for below 30% fibre loading are found to be fitting the experimental data. Composites mechanical properties and morphology were strongly affected by the type of fibre used and its loading, however thermal properties remained almost unchanged. In specific, Cordenka fibres tend to form bunches which presence greatly influences the mechanical properties but still our studies have shown clear advantage of manmade Cordenka fibres over the hemp and flax fibres when considering distribution and fibre–polymer interaction.  相似文献

Feather keratin has been widely studied for use as a bio-based material. In this paper, we dissolve feather keratin using industrial sodium sulfide to investigate the yield, dissolved keratin characteristics, and properties of regenerated products to assess the potential of using sodium sulfide as a means of converting waste feathers into a bio-polymer. Optimal conditions appeared to require short incubation times in order to give maximum strength in the regenerated product. This limits the yield to approximately 55%. Air-dried films and acid-precipitated samples are all readily re-crosslinked, suggesting the re-crosslinking process is robust. Minimizing exposure to the highly alkaline conditions appears favorable to final product strength through minimizing alkaline chain damage. The β-sheet structure of the parent keratin is largely maintained. The regenerated keratin was shown to have potentially attractive physical properties for use as a bio-polymer.  相似文献

The aim of the present study is to investigate mechanical and morphological properties of pineapple leaf fibres (PALF) reinforced phenolic composites and its comparison with kenaf fibre (KF)/phenolic composites. Mechanical properties (tensile, flexural and impact) of untreated and treated PALF phenolic composites at different fibre loading were investigated. Tensile, flexural and impact properties of PALF and kenaf/phenolic composites were analyzed as per ASTM standard. Morphological analysis of tensile fracture samples of composites was carried out by scanning electron microscopy. Obtained results indicated that treated PALF/phenolic composites at 50% PALF loading exhibited better tensile, flexural and impact properties as compared to other untreated PALF/phenolic composites. Treated kenaf/phenolic composites at 50% fibre loading showed better tensile, flexural and impact properties than untreated kenaf/phenolic composite. It is concluded that treated 50% fibre loading kenaf and PALF/phenolic composites showed better mechanical properties than untreated kenaf and PALF/phenolic composites due to good fibre/matrix interfacial bonding. Results obtained in this study will be used for the further study on hybridization of PALF and KF based phenolic composites.  相似文献

In this work cellulose was extracted from corn/maize straw (Zea mays) by means of an environmental-friendly multistep procedure involving alkaline treatment and a totally chlorine-free bleaching. This multistep procedure efficiently removed lignin and hemicelluloses. The pulp resulting from each step was characterized by attenuated total reflectance fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). The optimum pulping time (time of alkaline treatment) was determined by means of thermogravimetric analysis. The extracted cellulose is highly crystalline as verified by X-ray diffraction. The partial acid hydrolysis with sulfuric acid led to the isolation of cellulose whiskers in aqueous suspension as confirmed by light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. The depolarization ratio value of these nanocrystals is the same as that determined for cotton whiskers, showing that this ratio does not depend on the cellulose source. The maize whiskers are arranged laterally in bundles with average thickness around five times that of the crystallite.  相似文献

Reactively Compatibilized Cellulosic Polylactide Microcomposites   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) possesses a suite of favorable material properties that are enabling its penetration into diverse markets (e.g., as packaging material or textile fibers). In order to increase the range of applications for this material, it is necessary to modify its properties and for certain applications, reduce its cost. The introduction of fibers into a polymeric matrix is an established route towards property enhancement provided good dispersion and intimate interfacial adhesion can be achieved. In addition, cellulosic microfibers are obtainable at low to moderate cost. In this study, reactive compatibilization of cellulosic fibers with PLA is pursued. Hydroxyl groups available on the surface of cellulosic fibers are used to initiate lactide polymerization. Various processing strategies are investigated: (1) blending preformed PLA with the fiber material, (2) through a one-step process in which lactide is polymerized in the presence of the fibers alone, or (3) reactive compatibilization in the presence of preformed high molecular weight polymer. The results show that materials prepared by simultaneous introduction of lactide and preformed high molecular PLA at the beginning of the reaction possess superior mechanical properties compared to composites made by either purely mechanical mixing or solely polymerization of lactide in the presence of fibers. The modulus of materials containing 25% fibers which are prepared by reactive compatibilization of 30% preformed PLA and 70% lactide (30/70 P/L) improves by 53% compared to the homopolymer, whereas 36% reinforcement can be achieved upon purely mechanical mixing. A further increase to 35% fiber loading leads to a reduction in modulus due to an excess in initiating groups. The same trend was observed in systems containing 65% preformed PLA and 35% lactide (65/35 P/L) with an overall achievable reinforcement that was slightly lower.  相似文献

PLA Based Biopolymer Reinforced with Natural Fibre: A Review   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
In recent years renewed interest on the development of biopolymers, based on constituents obtained from natural resources is gaining much attention. Natural fibres such as kenaf, hemp, flax, jute, bamboo, elephant grass and sisal based polymer with thermoplastic and thermoset matrices offer reductions in weight, cost and carbon dioxide emission, less reliance on foreign oil resources and recyclability. Reinforced biopolymer with natural fibres is the future of “green composites” addressing many sustainability issues. Among the available biopolymer, PLA (polylactide) is the only natural resource polymer produced at a large scale of over 140,000 tonnes per year. Natural fibre reinforced PLA based biocomposites are widely investigated by the polymer scientists in the last decade to compete with non renewable petroleum based products. The type of fibre used plays an important role in fibre/matrix adhesion and thereby affects the mechanical performance of the biocomposites. The aim of this review is to investigate the effects of processing methods, fibre length, fibre orientation, fibre-volume fraction, and fibre-surface treatment on the fibre/matrix adhesion and mechanical properties of natural-fibre-reinforced PLA composites. Although much work has been performed to engineer the design of such superior biocomposites, the information is scattered in nature. A comprehensive review on the major technical considerations undertaken to prepare such biocomposites over the last decade is investigated to address the feasibility of wide scale industrial acceptance to such biocomposites. A brief review on the available natural fibres and biopolymer is also given for a comparative study.  相似文献
