Intensive aircraft- and ground-based measurements of ultrafine to supermicron particles in the Osaka metropolitan area, Japan, were carried out on 17–19 March 2003, in order to investigate vertical profiles of size-resolved particles in the urban atmosphere. Differently sized particles were observed at different altitudes on 19 March. Relatively higher concentrations of ultrafine particles (31 nm) and submicron particles (0.3–0.5 μm) were measured (100–200 cm−3) at altitudes of 300 and 600 m, whereas supermicron particles (2–5 μm) were present (300–600 cm−3) at higher altitudes (1300 m in the morning and 2200 m in the afternoon). The chemical composition analysis showed that supermicron particles evidently comprised mainly soil particles mixed internally with anthropogenic species such as carbonaceous components and sulfate. Numerical simulation using the Chemical weather FORecasting System (CFORS) suggested the long-range transport of soil dust and black carbon from the Asian continent. Total number concentrations of particles sized 10–875 nm ranged from 4.8×103 to 3.0×104 cm−3 at an altitude of 300 m and from 7.3×102 to 4.8×103 cm−3 at an altitude of 1300 m. Total number concentrations of particles sized 10–875 nm correlated very well with NOX concentrations, and, therefore, ultrafine and submicron particles were likely emitted from urban activities such as car traffic and vertically transported. Number size distributions at lower altitudes obtained by aircraft measurements were similar to those obtained by ground measurements, with modal diameters of 20–30 nm on 18 March and about 50 nm on 19 March.  相似文献

Vehicle particle emissions are studied extensively because of their health effects, contribution to ambient PM levels and possible impact on climate. The aim of this work was to obtain a better understanding of secondary particle formation and growth in a diluting vehicle exhaust plume using 3-d information of simulations together with measurements. Detailed coupled computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and aerosol dynamics simulations have been conducted for H2SO4–H2O and soot particles based on measurements within a vehicle exhaust plume under real conditions on public roads.Turbulent diffusion of soot and nucleation particles is responsible for the measured decrease of number concentrations within the diesel car exhaust plume and decreases coagulation rates. Particle size distribution measurements at 0.45 and 0.9 m distance to the tailpipe indicate a consistent soot mode (particle diameter Dp∼50 nm) at variable operating conditions. Soot mode number concentrations reached up to 1013 m−3 depending on operating conditions and mixing.For nucleation particles the simulations showed a strong sensitivity to the spatial dilution pattern, related cooling and exhaust H2SO4(g). The highest simulated nucleation rates were about 0.05–0.1 m from the axis of the plume. The simulated particle number concentration pattern is in approximate accordance with measured concentrations, along the jet centreline and 0.45 and 0.9 m from the tailpipe. Although the test car was run with ultralow sulphur fuel, high nucleation particle (Dp⩽15 nm) concentrations (>1013 m−3) were measured under driving conditions of strong acceleration or the combination of high vehicle speed (>140 km h−1) and high engine rotational speed (>3800 revolutions per minute (rpm)).Strong mixing and cooling caused rapid nucleation immediately behind the tailpipe, so that the highest particle number concentrations were recorded at a distance, x=0.45 m behind the tailpipe. The simulated growth of H2SO4–H2O nucleation particles was unrealistically low compared with measurements. The possible role of low and semi-volatile organic components on the growth processes is discussed. Simulations for simplified H2SO4–H2O–octane–gasoil aerosol resulted in sufficient growth of nucleation particles.  相似文献

Real time number concentrations and size distributions of ultrafine particles (UFPs, diameter <100 nm) and time integrated black carbon, PM2.5 mass, and chemical species were studied at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and a background reference site. At LAX, data were collected at the blast fence (∼140 m from the takeoff position) and five downwind sites up to 600 m from the takeoff runway and upwind of the 405 freeway. Size distributions of UFPs collected at the blast fence site showed very high number concentrations, with the highest numbers found at a particle size of approximately 14 nm. The highest spikes in the time series profile of UFP number concentrations were correlated with individual aircraft takeoff. Measurements indicate a more than 100-fold difference in particle number concentrations between the highest spikes during takeoffs and the lowest concentrations when no takeoff is occurring. Total UFP counts exceeded 107 particles cm−3 during some monitored takeoffs. Time averaged concentrations of PM2.5 mass and two carbonyl compounds, formaldehyde and acrolein, were statistically elevated at the airport site relative to a background reference site. Peaks of 15 nm particles, associated with aircraft takeoffs, that occurred at the blast fence were matched with peaks observed 600 m downwind, with time lags of less than 1 min. The results of this study demonstrate that commercial aircraft at LAX emit large quantities of UFP at the lower end of currently measurable particle size ranges. The observed highly elevated UFP concentrations downwind of LAX associated with aircraft takeoff activities have significant exposure and possible health implications.  相似文献

The combined effect of polystyrene (PS) particles and triphenyltin chloride (TPTCl) to the green algae Chlorella pyrenoidosa was studied. The 96 h IC50 of TPTCl to the green algae C. pyrenoidosa was 30.64 μg/L. The toxicity of PS particles to C. pyrenoidosa was size-dependent, with the 96 h IC50 at 9.10 mg/L for 0.55 μm PS but no toxicity observed for 5.0 μm PS. The exposure to 0.55 μm PS led to damage on structure of algal cells, which could in turn cause inhibition on photosynthesis and population growth of the green algae. TPTCl concentrations in test medium were lowered by 15–19% at presence of 0.55 μm PS particles, indicating a reduced bioavailability of TPTCl. In spite of this reduced bioavailability, the presence of PS increased the toxicity of TPTCl, which might be attributed to facilitated uptake of TPTCl by the green algae after the damage of cell structure. The overall results of the present study provided important information on the effect of PS on the bioavailability and toxicity of TPTCl to phytoplankton species.

From 1 May to 25 May 2001, the BAB II campaign was carried out at the motorway BAB (656) near Heidelberg. Atmospheric concentrations of particulate matter and gases were measured together with the meteorological conditions. This paper is focused on the particulate matter measured upwind and downwind from the motorway at ground level. In order to determine the source contribution from the motorway traffic, it was necessary to measure upwind and downwind simultaneously due to variations in background concentrations. The particle number contribution from the motorway was found to be 35,000 particles cm−3 for particles with diameters close to 20 nm and 5000 particles cm−3 for particles with diameters close to 70 nm. Bimodal size distributions were observed on the downwind side, whereas the upwind side showed unimodal size distributions. For particulate mass, it can be estimated that the contribution from the motorway to the PM1 concentrations is in a range 0.6–1.3 μg m−3 for the chosen measurement sites approximately 60 m from the road at a height of 6 m. The soot measurements showed diurnal variation; however, the upwind downwind difference was not measured. Correlation factors showed good correlation between total particle number and number of particles with diameters below 80 nm, CO and NO. There was no correlation between particle number and PM10, which is due to the observation that particle number was dominated by the 20 nm particles.  相似文献

The condensation properties of polydisperse aged ultrafine carbon aerosols (particle diameter<1 μm) have been investigated by means of a variable supersaturation condensation nucleus counter. The critical supersaturation (Sc), as the point, where 50% of all particles have been activated and grew to droplets was compared to the median dry particle diameter for pure carbon aerosols, benzo[a]pyrene-tagged carbon aerosols and external mixtures of the carbon particles with sodium chloride and sulphuric acid aerosols. Additionally, ozone as oxidising gaseous compound was added in some of the experiments. Simple coagulation of pure and benzo[a]pyrene-tagged carbon particles resulted in only slightly lower values for Sc due to the increased median particle diameter. The formation of soluble functionalities on the particle surface, i.e. the coagulation with the soluble sodium chloride and sulphuric acid aerosols or the chemical decomposition of benzo[a]pyrene into polar, hydrophilic products due to the reaction with ozone resulted in significant lower values for Sc for the modified carbon aerosol. The necessary supersaturations for the increased hydrophilic particles dropped to atmospherically relevant values of 3% after 5 h reaction time (benzo[a]pyrene decomposition) and 15 h (coagulation with soluble particles), respectively.  相似文献

Characteristic parameters of black carbon aerosol (BC) emitted from jet engine were measured during ground tests and in-flight behind the same aircraft. Size distribution features were a primary BC mode at a modal diameter D≈0.045 μm, and a BC agglomeration mode at D<0.2 μm. The total BC number concentration at the engine exit was 2.9×107 cm-3 with good agreement between model results and in-flight measured number concentrations of non-volatile particles with D⩾0.014 μm. A comparison between total number concentration of BC particles and the non-volatile fraction of the total aerosol at the exit plane suggests that the non-volatile fraction of jet engine exhaust aerosol consists almost completely of BC. In-flight BC mass emission indices ranged from 0.11 to 0.15 g BC (kg fuel)-1. The measured in-flight particle emission value was 1.75±0.15×1015 kg-1 with corresponding ground test values of 1.0–8.7×1014 kg-1. Both size distribution properties and mass emission indices can be scaled from ground test to in-flight conditions. Implications for atmospheric BC loading, BC and cirrus interaction and the potential of BC for perturbation of atmospheric chemistry are briefly outlined.  相似文献

Composition of exhaust from a ship diesel engine using heavy fuel oil (HFO) was investigated onboard a large cargo vessel. The emitted particulate matter (PM) properties related to environmental and health impacts were investigated along with composition of the gas-phase emissions. Mass, size distribution, chemical composition and microphysical structure of the PM were investigated. The emission factor for PM was 5.3 g (kg fuel)?1. The mass size distribution showed a bimodal shape with two maxima: one in the accumulation mode with mean particle diameter DP around 0.5 μm and one in the coarse mode at DP around 7 μm. The PM composition was dominated by organic carbon (OC), ash and sulphate while the elemental carbon (EC) composed only a few percent of the total PM. Increase of the PM in exhaust upon cooling was associated with increase of OC and sulphate. Laser analysis of the adsorbed phase in the cooled exhaust showed presence of a rich mixture of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) species with molecular mass 178–300 amu while PM collected in the hot exhaust showed only four PAH masses.Microstructure and elemental analysis of ship combustion residuals indicate three distinct morphological structures with different chemical composition: soot aggregates, significantly metal polluted; char particles, clean or containing minerals; mineral and/or ash particles. Additionally, organic carbon particles of unburned fuel or/and lubricating oil origin were observed. Hazardous constituents from the combustion of heavy fuel oil such as transitional and alkali earth metals (V, Ni, Ca, Fe) were observed in the PM samples.Measurements of gaseous composition in the exhaust of this particular ship showed emission factors that are on the low side of the interval of global emission factors published in literature for NOx, hydrocarbons (HC) and CO.  相似文献

Traffic-related aerosol particles are ubiquitous in the urban atmosphere. As they are produced at ground level, they can also cause adverse health effects to urban dwellers. However, knowledge of the formation, transformation and chemically resolved size distribution of urban ultrafine particles is incomplete. Thus, more of these measurements are needed for better assessment of ambient air quality and its potential health effects. The particle number concentration, aerosol black carbon (BC) concentration and size distribution of traffic-related aerosols were measured near two major roads in Kuopio, Finland, from 16 June to 5 July, 2004. Furthermore, the properties of roadside aerosol particles were examined with the Tandem Differential Mobility Analyzer technique (TDMA). A suite of TDMA instruments relying on water (hygroscopic TDMA) and ethanol (organic TDMA) condensation as well as heating (volatility TDMA) were deployed to study the composition of the nucleation and Aitken mode particles (Dp = 10–50 nm) formed from vehicle exhaust. The results show that a simple three-component model was able to reproduce characteristic insoluble, organic and water-soluble volume fractions. Insoluble constituents were dominant in the Aitken mode particles, whereas organic compounds dominated the nucleation mode sizes. On average, only a small volume fraction was water-soluble, but a clear external mixing was observed particularly when enough time was allowed after the tail pipe emissions. The contribution of the insoluble material was seen to increase as a function of particle size, being typically less than 10% at 10 nm and between 20 and 50% at 50 nm, in contrast to the organic fraction, which decreased from about 80% at nucleation mode size range to 50–60% at 50 nm.  相似文献

The previously developed theoretical model [Gao, Y., Chen, S.B., Yu, L.E., 2006. Efflorescence relative humidity for ammonium sulfate particles. Journal of Physical Chemistry A, 110, 7602–7608], which has successfully predicted the efflorescence relative humidity (ERH) of ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2SO4) particles at room temperature, is employed to estimate the ERH of sodium chloride (NaCl) particles in sizes ranging from 6 nm to 20 μm. The theoretical predictions well agree with the reported experimental data in literatures. When the NaCl particles are larger than 70 nm, the ERH decreases with decreasing dry particle sizes, and reach a minimum around 44% RH, otherwise the ERH increases with decreasing dry particle sizes (<70 nm) because of the Kelvin effect. Compared with (NH4)2SO4 particles, the Kelvin effect on ERH is stronger for NaCl particles smaller than 30 nm, while the dry particle size exerts weaker influence on NaCl particles larger than 70 nm.  相似文献

Measurements for particles 10 nm to 10 μm were taken using a Wide-range Particle Spectrometer during the Chinese New Year (CNY) celebrations in 2009 in Shanghai, China. These celebrations provided an opportunity to study the number concentration and size distribution of particles in an especial atmospheric pollution situation due to firework displays. The firework activities had a clear contribution to the number concentration of small accumulation mode particles (100–500 nm) and PM1 mass concentration, with a maximum total number concentration of 3.8 × 104 cm?3. A clear shift of particles from nucleation and Aitken mode to small accumulation mode was observed at the peak of the CNY firework event, which can be explained by reduced atmospheric lifetimes of smaller particles via the concept of the coagulation sink. High particle density (2.7 g cm?3) was identified as being particularly characteristic of the firework aerosols. Recalculated fine particles PM1 exhibited on average above 150 μg m?3 for more than 12 hours, which was a health risk to susceptible individuals. Integral physical parameters of firework aerosols were calculated for understanding their physical properties and further model simulation.  相似文献

This study investigates ammonium, nitrate, and sulfate (NH4+, NO3?, and SO42?) in size-resolved particles (particularly nano (PM0.01–0.056)/ultrafine (PM0.01–0.1)) and NOx/SO2 collected near a busy road and at a rural site. The average (mass) cumulative fraction of secondary inorganic aerosols (SO42?+NO3?+NH4+) in nano or ultrafine particles at the roadside was found to be three to four times that at the rural site. The above three secondary inorganic aerosol species were present in similar cumulative fractions in particles of size 1–18 μm at both sites; however, dissimilar fractions were observed for Cl?, Na+, and K+. The nitrogen ratios (NRs: NR = NO3??N/(NO3??N + NO2–N)), sulfur ratios (SRs: SR = SO42??S/(SO42??S + SO2–S)), dNR/DP (derivative of NR with respect to DP (particle diameter)), and dSR/DP (derivative of SR with respect to DP) at the roadside were higher than those at the rural site for nano/ultrafine particles. At both sites (particularly the roadside), the nanoparticles had significantly higher dNR/DP and dSR/DP values than differently sized particles, implying that NO3?/SO42? (from NO2/SO2 transformation or NO3?/SO42? deposition) were present on these particles.  相似文献

Vehicular emitted air pollutant concentrations were studied near three types of roadways in Austin, Texas: (1) State Highway 71 (SH-71), a heavily traveled arterial highway dominated by passenger vehicles; (2) Interstate 35 (I-35), a limited access highway north of Austin in Georgetown; and (3) Farm to Market Road 973 (FM-973), a heavily traveled surface roadway dominated by truck traffic. Air pollutants examined include carbon monoxide (CO), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), and carbonyl species in the gas-phase. In the particle phase, ultrafine particle (UFP) concentrations (diameter < 100 nm), fine particulate matter (PM2.5, diameter < 2.5 μm) mass and carbon content and several particle-bound organics were examined. All roadways had an upwind stationary sampling location, one or two fixed downwind sample locations and a mobile monitoring platform that characterized pollutant concentrations fall-off with increased distance from the roadways. Data reported in this paper focus on UFP while other pollutants and near-roadway chemical processes are examined in a companion paper. Traffic volume, especially heavy-duty traffic, wind speed, and proximity to the road were found to be the most important factors determining UFP concentrations near the roadways. Since wind directions were not consistent during the sampling periods, distances along wind trajectories from the roadway to the sampling points were used to study the decay characteristics of UFPs. Under perpendicular wind conditions, for all studied roadway types, particle number concentrations increased dramatically moving from the upwind side to the downwind side. The elevated particle number concentrations decay exponentially with increasing distances from the roadway with sharp concentration gradients observed within 100–150 m, similar to previously reported studies. A single exponential decay curve was found to fit the data collected from all three roadways very well under perpendicular wind conditions. No consistent pattern was observed for UFPs under parallel wind conditions. However, regardless of wind conditions, particle concentrations returned to background levels within a few hundred meters of the roadway. Within measured UFP size ranges, smaller particles (6–25 nm) decayed faster than larger ones (100–300 nm). Similar decay rates were observed among UFP number, surface, and volume.  相似文献

Airborne in-situ measurements were analyzed to investigate the effects of biomass burning and regional background aerosols on cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) activity in the Pacific Dust Experiment (PACDEX) during April and May 2007. Airmass trajectories with both horizontal and vertical motions were provided to identify the aerosol sources. In the biomass burning cases, the elevated aerosol layers were clearly observed at dry conditions because of the convection of airmass in the source region. The relative aging of aerosols was supported by the ratios of BC to particles with size ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 μm (N0.1–1.0) and BC to carbon monoxide. Compared to aerosols in the precedent plume of biomass burning, aged particles in the latter plume were more activated to CCN at 0.4% (CCN0.4%) than 0.1% supersaturation (CCN0.1%) due to aerosols chemical modification during the aging process. On the other hand, significant difference of CCN0.4% and CCN0.1% at regional background aerosols over the Pacific Ocean was due to the activated particles below 1 μm in diameter. Although higher concentrations of aged particles were observed over the eastern Pacific Ocean, activated aerosols to cloud droplet was comparatively similar in the western Pacific Ocean because of the similar concentrations of N0.1–1.0 in both cases.  相似文献

Fine particle matters (PM2.5) is a well-known risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are largely unknown. Vascular hyper-reactivity plays an important roles in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. The present study was designed to investigate a hypothesis that PM2.5 up-regulated endothelin receptors in mesenteric artery and the potential underlying mechanisms. Rat mesenteric arteries were cultured with PM2.5. The artery contractile responses were recorded by a sensitive myograph. ETB and ETA receptor expressions of mRNA and protein were assessed by quantitative real-time PCR, Western blotting, and immunohistochemistry, respectively. Results showed that ETB receptor agonist, sarafotoxin 6c induced a negligible contraction in fresh artery segments, while ETA receptor agonist, ET-1 induced an obvious contraction. After organ culture, the contraction curve mediated by ETB and ETA receptors were shifted toward the left. PM2.5 1.0 μg/ml cultured for 16 h further enhanced ETB and ETA receptor-mediated contractile responses with a markedly increased maximal contraction. The organ culture enhanced ETB and ETA receptor mRNA and protein levels from fresh arteries, which were further increased by PM2.5. The U0126 (MEK/ERK1/2 inhibitor) and SB203580 (p38 inhibitor) significantly attenuated both organ cultured-induced and PM2.5-induced up-regulation of ETB receptor. U0126 also suppressed organ culture-increased and PM2.5-increased expressions of ETA receptor. SB203580 only suppressed PM2.5-induced enhanced expressions of ETA receptor In conclusion, airborne PM2.5 up-regulates ETB and ETA receptors of mesenteric artery via p38 MAPK and MEK/ERK1/2 MAPK pathways.

Background, aim, and scope  Dye pollutants are a major class of environmental contaminants. Over 100,000 dyes have been synthesized worldwide and more than 700,000 tons are produced annually and over 5% are discharged into aquatic environments. The adsorption or sorption is one of the most efficient methods to remove dye and heavy metal pollutants from wastewater. However, most of the present sorbents often bear some disadvantages, e.g. low sorption capacity, difficult separation of spoil, complex reproduction, or secondary pollution. Development of novel sorbents that can overcome these limitations is desirable. Materials and methods  On the basis of the chemical coprecipitation of calcium oxalate (CaC2O4), bromopyrogallol red (BPR) was embedded during the growing of CaC2O4 particles. The ternary C2O4 2––BPR–Ca2+ sorbent was yielded by the centrifugation. Its composition was determined by spectrophotometry and AAS, and its structure and morphology were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), laser particle-size analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The adsorption of ethyl violet (EV) and heavy metals, e.g. Cu(II), Cd(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), and Pb(II) were carried out and their removal rate determined by spectrophotometry and ICP-OES. The adsorption performance of the sorbent was compared with powder activated carbon. The Langmuir isothermal model was applied to fit the embedment of BPR and adsorption of EV. Results  The saturation number of BPR binding to CaC2O4 reached 0.0105 mol/mol and the adsorption constant of the complex was 4.70 × 105 M–1. Over 80% of the sorbent particles are between 0.7 and 1.02 μm, formed by the aggregation of the global CaC2O4/BPR inclusion grains of 30–50 nm size. Such a material was found to adsorb cationic dyes selectively and sensitively. Ethyl violet (EV) was used to investigate the adsorption mechanism of the material. One BPR molecule may just bind with one EV molecule. The CaC2O4/BPR inclusion material adsorbed EV over two times more efficiently than the activated carbon. The adsorption of EV on the CaC2O4/BPR inclusion sorbent was complete in only 5 min and the sedimentation complete in 1 h. However, those of EV onto activated carbon took more than 1.5 and 5 h, respectively. The treatment of methylene blue and malachite green dye wastewaters indicated that only 0.4% of the sorbent adsorbed over 80% of color substances. Besides, the material can also adsorb heavy metals by complexation with BPR. Over 90% of Pb2+, and approximately 50% of Cd2+ and Cu2+, were removed in a high Zn2+-electroplating wastewater when 3% of the material was added. Eighty-six percent of Cu2+, and 60% of Ni2+ and Cd2+, were removed in a high Cd2+-electroplating wastewater. Discussion  The embedment of BPR into CaC2O4 particles responded to the Langmuir isothermal adsorption. As the affinity ligand of Ca2+, BPR with sulfonic groups may be adsorbed into the temporary electric double layer during the growing of CaC2O4 particles. Immediately, C2O4 2– captured the Ca2+ to form the CaC2O4 outer enclosed sphere. Thus, BPR may be released and embedded as a sandwich between CaC2O4 layers. The adsorption of EV on the sorbent obeyed the Langmuir isothermal equation and adsorption is mainly due to the ion-pair attraction between EV and BPR. Different from the inclusion sorbent, the activated carbon depended on the specific surface area to adsorb organic substances. Therefore, the adsorption capacity, equilibrium, and sedimentation time of the sorbent are much better than activated carbon. The interaction of heavy metals with the inclusion sorbent responded to their coordination. Conclusions  By characterizing the C2O4 2––BPR–Ca2+ inclusion material using various modern instruments, the ternary in situ embedment particle, [(CaC2O4)95(BPR)] n 2n, an electronegative, micron-sized adsorbent was synthesized. It is selective, rapid, and highly effective for adsorbing cationic dyes and heavy metals. Moreover, the adsorption is hardly subject to the impact of electrolytes. Recommendations and perspectives  The present work provides a simple and valuable method for preparing the highly effective adsorbent. If a concentrated BPR wastewater was reused as the inclusion reactant, the sorbent will be low cost. By selecting the inclusion ligand with a special structure, we may prepare some particular functional materials to recover the valuable substances from seriously polluted wastewaters. The recommended method will play a significant role in development of advanced adsorption materials. The objective of this project was to characterize on-road aerosol on highways surrounding the Minneapolis area. Data were collected under varying on-road traffic conditions and in residential areas to determine the impact of highway traffic on air quality. The study was focused on determining on-road nanoparticle concentrations, and estimating fuel-specific and particle emissions km−1.On-road aerosol number concentrations ranged from 104 to 106 particles cm−3. The highest nanoparticle concentrations were associated with high-speed traffic. At high vehicular speeds engine load, exhaust temperature, and exhaust flow all increase resulting in higher emissions. Less variation was observed in particle volume, a surrogate measure of particle mass. Most of the particles added by the on-road fleet were below 50 nm in diameter. Particles in this size range may dominate particle number, but contribute little to particle volume or mass. Furthermore, particle number is strongly influenced by nucleation and coagulation, which have little or no effect on particle volume. Measurements made in heavy traffic, speeds<32 km h−1, produced lower number concentrations and larger particles.Number concentrations measured in residential areas, 10–20 m from the highway, were considerably lower than on-road concentrations, but the size distributions were similar to on-road aerosol with high concentrations of very small (<20 nm) particles. Much lower number concentrations and larger particles were observed in residential areas located 500–700 m from the highway.Estimated emissions of total particle number larger than 3 nm ranged from 1.9 to 9.9×1014 particles km−1 and 2.2–11×1015 particles (kg fuel)−1 for a gasoline-dominated vehicle fleet.  相似文献

This study investigates the levels of particulate matter smaller than 2.5 μm (PM2.5) and some selected volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at 12 photocopy centers in Taiwan from November 2004 to June 2005. The results of BTEXS (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes and styrene) measurements indicated that toluene had the highest concentration in all photocopy centers, while the concentration of the other four compounds varied among the 12 photocopy centers. The average background-corrected eight-hour PM2.5 in the 12 photocopy centers ranged from 10 to 83 μg m−3 with an average of 40 μg m−3. The 24-h indoor PM2.5 at the photocopy centers was estimated and at two photocopy centers exceeded 100 μg m−3, the 24-h indoor PM2.5 guideline recommended by the Taiwan EPA. The ozone level and particle size distribution at another photocopy center were monitored and indicated that the ozone level increased when the photocopying started and the average ozone level at some photocopy centers during business hour may exceed the value (50 ppb) recommended by the Taiwan EPA. The particle size distribution monitored during photocopying indicated that the emitted particles were much smaller than the original toner powders. Additionally, the number concentration of particles that were smaller than 0.5 μm was found to increase during the first hour of photocopying and it increased as the particle size decreased. The ultrafine particle (UFP, <100 nm) dominated the number concentration and the peak concentration appeared at sizes of under 50 nm. A high number concentration of UFP was found with a peak value of 1E+8 particles cm−3 during photocopying. The decline of UFP concentration was observed after the first hour and the decline is likely attributable to the surface deposition of charged particles, which are charged primarily by the diffusion charging of corona devices in the photocopier. This study concludes that ozone and UFP concentrations in photocopy centers should be concerned in view of indoor air quality and human health. The corona devices in photocopiers and photocopier-emitted VOCs have the potential to initiate indoor air chemistry during photocopying and result in the formation of UFP.  相似文献

Measurements carried out in Paris Magenta railway station in April–May 2006 underlined a repeatable diurnal cycle of aerosol concentrations and optical properties. The average daytime PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations in such a confined space were approximately 5–30 times higher than those measured in Paris streets. Particles are mainly constituted of dust, with high concentrations of iron and other metals, but are also composed of black and organic carbon. Aerosol levels are linked to the rate at which rain and people pass through the station. Concentrations are also influenced by ambient air from the nearby streets through tunnel ventilation. During daytime approximately 70% of aerosol mass concentrations are governed by coarse absorbing particles with a low Angström exponent (~0.8) and a low single-scattering albedo (~0.7). The corresponding aerosol density is about 2 g cm?3 and their complex refractive index at 355 nm is close to 1.56–0.035 i. The high absorption properties are linked to the significant proportion of iron oxides together with black carbon in braking systems. During the night, particles are mostly submicronic, thus presenting a greater Angström exponent (~2). The aerosol density is lower (1.8 g cm?3) and their complex refractive index presents a lower imaginary part (1.58–0.013 i), associated to a stronger single-scattering albedo (~0.85–0.90), mostly influenced by the ambient air. For the first time we have assessed the emission (deposition) rates in an underground station for PM10, PM2.5 and black carbon concentrations to be 3314 ± 781(?1164 ± 160), 1186 ± 358(?401 ± 66) and 167 ± 46(?25 ± 9) μg m?2 h?1, respectively.  相似文献

Agricultural irrigation water in Northwest China accounts for more than 80% of total local water consumption, which is 1.23 times that of China. However, Northwest China is the most water-scarce place in China. Water scarcity in restricts crop growth and production. Reference crop evapotranspiration (ET0) is important for agricultural water management. Understanding the reason for ET0 change is helpful to provide a basis for rational planning of agricultural irrigation systems to conserve water. This study investigated the temporal and spatial variation characteristics of ET0 at 181 meteorological stations in Northwest China from 2000 to 2019. And the sensitive factors and dominant factors affecting ET0 change were quantitatively identified based on sensitivity analysis and contribution rate evaluation. Results showed that (1) a significant increase in maximum and minimum temperature (Tmax and Tmin), a significant decrease in sunshine duration (SD) and relative humidity (RH), and a slight increase in wind speed at 10 m height (U10) were observed. (2) Annual ET0 had an insignificant increasing trend. Spring and autumn ET0 contributed greatly to the growth of annual ET0, especially in March, May, September, October, and November. ET0 in HH (Yellow River Basin area) had decreased at annual scale, while other subregions were the opposite trend. Significant differences in monthly and seasonal changes in the spatial distribution of ET0. (3) U10 was the dominating contribution factor related to annual ET0 variability, followed by Tmin, RH, Tmax, and SD. In seasonal time scale, Tmin, SD, U10, and RH were the most dominant factors in spring, summer, autumn, and winter respectively. (4) Spatial distribution for contribution rates of various meteorological factors showed significant diversity among various subregions. The positive contribution of U10 was the major cause of the increase in ET0 in semi-arid grassland area (BGH), the southwest of “Qice line” (QCXXN), and the southeast of “Qice line” (QCXDN); the significant increase in Tmin contributed most in Qaidam Basin (CDM), Hexi inland river basin (HX), the northeast of “Qice line” (QCXDB), and the northwest of “Qice line” (QCXXB), while the contribution of decreasing SD offsets the positive effects of other factors, leading to the decrease in ET0 in HH. Our work illustrates that water management measures should be different at different spatial and temporal scales. The effect of U10 can be offset by covering, to reduce evaporation and maintain water in BGH, QCXXN, and QCXDN. And high-temperature resistant varieties are planted to adapt to temperature growth in CDM, HX, QCXDB, and QCXXB. Agricultural water management strategies should be formulated and selected according to local conditions.
