The various aspects of two similar but indeed different air pollution problems are discussed. Both fugitive emissions (industrial) and fugitive dust emissions represent problems affecting attainment of national standards. Both are difficult to quantify so as to determine the relative magnitude of the problem. Both have been generally overlooked in the past in relation to developing an effective and widespread air pollution control program. Both problems will generally require the use of non-conventional air pollution control measures. Both are also becoming the subject of more intensive investigation as more knowledge is being gathered to implicate such emissions as significant air pollution problems.  相似文献

A research project has been under way to investigate air pollution problems in Los Angeles County with the help of the data supplied by the Los Angeles County Air Pollution Control District. These data consist of measurements of primary pollutants such as nitric oxide, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and particu-lates, and secondary pollutants such as ozone and nitrogen dioxide, recorded hourly at a number of different stations in Los Angeles County over the past seventeen years. This present discussion deals in a preliminary way with a particular aspect of this analysis, namely, the occurrence of photochemical smog in Los Angeles. The paper is divided into two main sections. The first is intended to provide a brief survey of the problem of photochemical smog in Los Angeles as presently understood in relation to the available field data and also in relation to chamber experiments which have been run in various laboratories. The second part of the paper discusses a class of intervention problems that arise in studying the data. It is noted that parallel problems occur in the study of other ecological material and elsewhere. Statistical methods for dealing with this class of problems are illustrated with some of the Los Angeles data.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation is to evaluate the current status and to identify the problems of municipal solid waste (MSW) management in China to determine appropriate remedial strategies. This is the second of two papers proposed on this topic. Major problems or difficulties identified in MSW management in China include MSW land, air, and water pollution, commingled collection, poor administration, shortage of funds, lack of facilities, and problems of training and public awareness. In order to solve these problems and to improve MSW management in China, remedial strategies in three areas are recommended: institutional reform, technology development, and legislation and administrative improvement. The primary principle involved in institutional reform is unifying legislative responsibilities into one body and developing a market mechanism for handling MSW. Composting, landfills, and incineration should be equally developed in accordance with China's needs. The feasibility of developing technology to handle MSW in China is discussed. Also recommended is the establishment of sound regulatory systems, including a service fee system, a source separation system, and a training program. China is presently undergoing economic and institutional reform at the national and local levels. Results of this study will provide useful information on MSW management in China.  相似文献

For evaluation of environmental problems in urban areas, models are needed. Physical models and mathematical models are the tools of the trade. Both types of models have advantages and limitations. The emphasis here is on boundary layer wind tunnels, which are well suited for the study of many urban climate situations. The boundary layer flow along the floor of a meteorological wind tunnel is a real flow which approximately represents a scaled down version of the atmospheric boundary layer under conditions of neutral stratification. Therefore, important practical problems involving urban atmospheric conditions can be studied in such wind tunnels by means of geometrically similar models of the urban area. Such problems involve wind forces on structures, pedestrian comfort, and diffusion processes from point sources, such as chimneys, tunnel exhausts and gaseous spills, or from line sources, such as traffic lines. The investigation of these processes in a wind tunnel must be seen, however, as one link only in a chain of actions.  相似文献
