The body of information presented in this paper is directed to those individuals concerned with the control of air pollution emissions which occur as a result of the operation of by-product coke plants. It describes a new process which represents a major change in the charging operation wherein preheated coal can be charged to coke ovens via a closed pipeline system thus replacing the conventional larry charging car and thereby eliminating air pollution estimated to be as much as 70% of the total emissions from coke oven operations. Coal is dried and preheated in a continuous fluidized bed process utilizing products of combustion of coke oven gas. The coal is recovered in conventional cyclone collectors and conveyed to the ovens via a new and novel pneumatic conveying system where the gas used is superheated steam. Jet energy repeatedly thrusts the coal upward and forward through the pipe, obtaining a high efficiency of transport of solids ten times that of conventional systems. Major advantages of the process demonstrated to date include (1) elimination of emissions from charging, (2) reduction of emission from pushing, (3) improved battery top working conditions, (4) increased oven productivity as much as 45%.  相似文献

Because of the extreme difficulties in sampling the discharge from coke-quench towers, only limited data have been available on the magnitude and effect of the emissions from this source. To evaluate this process better, U.S. Steel retained TRC Environmental Consultants, Inc., to undertake a test program at Gary Works (1) to conduct the necessary sampling tests to develop particulate emission factors for the coke-quenching operation during quenching with fresh water and with waste process water makeup to the quench system and (2) to estimate the impact of the emissions on ambient air quality for both conditions by means of dispersion modeling.

The test results for a new offset quench tower provided with impingement baffles show particulate emissions of 0.35 pound per ton of coal (Ib/ton) for fresh water and 0.45 Ib/ton for process water quenching. The results for an older, straight-through, low-velocity quench tower, also provided with baffles, show 0.32 and 0.64 Ib/ton for fresh and process water quenching, respectively. The results of the dispersion model studies indicate a minimal effect on ambient air concentration of particulates due to coke quenching with either fresh or process water.  相似文献

建立了2005年北京市燃煤污染源排放清单,利用MM5-CMAQ模型计算了各区县各行业燃煤对北京市空气质量的影响。研究表明,2005年1月北京市燃煤源对各监测站点SO_2浓度的贡献在70%以上,对PM_(10)和NO_x浓度的贡献约为20%~40%和10%~30%;7月本地燃煤源对SO_2浓度的贡献在40%~50%左右。1月采暖锅炉对空气质量影响最大,占50%~70%;7月电厂的影响最大。依据北京市奥运空气质量保障方案以及"十一五"期间能源规划,建立了2010年燃煤污染源大气排放的规划情景,并模拟了各规划措施对大气质量的改善效果。通过实施电厂脱硫脱硝除尘、炼焦工业停产、钢铁行业和水泥行业搬迁减产、供热锅炉改造、平房用煤改造等措施,与2005年相比,SO_2平均浓度下降30%左右,NO_x和PM_(10)浓度的下降幅度15%。  相似文献

ABSTRACT

From the Indian national point of view, the importance of coal carbonizing industries is great and growing. These industries produce huge quantities of highly polluted effluents and discharge them into rivers without proper treatment. A large coke plant of Bharat Coking Coal Ltd. has been surveyed, and the impact of its effluent on surface water quality is discussed. Approximately 175-200 m3 of effluents are discharged from the plant every day. Land application has been considered as a low-cost means of disposal of coke oven effluents. Column lysimeters were prepared by collecting soil from a nearby agricultural field, putting it layerwise into a column, and compacting it carefully to simulate the original in situ conditions. Raw effluents, diluted effluent, and water (as a blank) were applied to the three lysimeters twice a week with a 5 cm flooding. Upon application of diluted effluent (1:1) into lysimeter No. 2, the leachate collected at 190 cm depth was within the tolerance limit of drinking water standard (IS 10,500). The impact of raw and diluted effluent on groundwater quality and soil are discussed. The renovation efficiency of living filter (lysimeter No. 2) was 99.37% for oil and grease, 86.92% for COD, and 53.22% for TDS, and it is estimated that 2.73 hectares of land can be irrigated with the effluents of the coke plant without deteriorating groundwater and soil quality.  相似文献

This paper describes a project that assessed the potential for mercury (Hg) release to air and water from soil amended with combustion products to simulate beneficial use. Combustion products (ash) derived from wood, sewage sludge, subbituminous coal, and a subbituminous coal-petroleum coke mixture were added to soil as agricultural supplements, soil stabilizers, and to develop low-permeability surfaces. Hg release was measured from the latter when intact and after it was broken up and mixed into the soil. Air-substrate Hg exchange was measured for all materials six times over 24 hr, providing data that reflected winter, spring, summer, and fall meteorological conditions. Dry deposition of atmospheric Hg and emission of Hg to the atmosphere were both found to be important fluxes. Measured differences in seasonal and diel (24 hr) fluxes demonstrated that to establish an annual estimate of air-substrate flux from these materials data on both of these time steps should be collected. Air-substrate exchange was highly correlated with soil and air temperature, as well as incident light. Hg releases to the atmosphere from coal and wood combustion product-amended soils to simulate an agricultural application were similar to that measured for the unamended soil, whereas releases to the air for the sludge-amended materials were higher. Hg released to soil solutions during the Synthetic Precipitation Leaching Procedure for ash-amended materials was higher than that released from soil alone. On the basis of estimates of annual releases of Hg to the air from the materials used, emissions from coal and wood ash-amended soil to simulate an agricultural application could simply be re-emission of Hg deposited by wet processes from the atmosphere; however, releases from sludge-amended materials and those generated to simulate soil stabilization and disturbed low-permeability pads include Hg indigenous to the material.  相似文献

The body of information presented in this paper is directed to environmental scientists interested in the detection of vegetation damage from air pollution. A dual 35-mm camera bank, manually operated from a small aircraft, was tested as a sensor system for detecting vegetation damage caused by air pollution. The cameras were filled with color and color infrared film and attached to a frame so that simultaneous exposure was possible. This gave a matched pair of photographs for each scene.

A test site was selected that contained three very large coal-fired power plants and a complex of beehive coke ovens. The power plants burn medium-sulfur coal (2 to 3%) which, after coal preparation, results in stack emissions of between 1500 and 2000 ppm sulfur dioxide (S02). The coke ovens are relatively old and have effectively no pollution controls. The ovens emit hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, a variety of benzene-based organics, and heavily dust-laden smoke. The areas near the power plants and coke ovens were monitored by photographic overflights on a regular basis. A variety of aerial photographs were made to test for optimum light conditions, exposure times, and altitudes. Field trips were carried out to examine photographed areas at the ground level.

Two areas were found to have vegetation damage on a scale that made aerial photographs useful. One area was damaged from effluent from the coke ovens; another area exhibited symptoms characteristic of oxidant-type damage where low sulfur dioxide concentrations may have been a contributing factor. In each case the 35-mm camera system was a success in terms of detecting and recording the stress. The chief advantages of such a technique are ease of operation, flexibility, and economy. Compared with conventional aerial photography, the savings are considerable. The disadvantages are small area coverage per photograph and difficulty in obtaining vertical photographs that would have a uniform scale. The types and rates of pollutant emissions from a coal-fired power plant depend upon plant design, coal characteristics, and environmental control policy. In the past, air pollution regulations were often promulgated without rigorous analysis of the resulting energy penalties and secondary environmental impacts that occur in other environmental media (air, land, or water), which are counterproductive to overall environmental quality. This paper describes a Comparative Assessment Model that has been developed to consider systematically such tradeoffs for conventional and advanced coal-to-electric technologies. The model is applied to quantify the secondary (“cross-media”) environmental and resource impacts resulting from alternative air pollution control policies that reduce sulfur dioxide emissions from a 1000 MW power plant. Multimedia pollutant burdens are presented, together with the increased requirements for coal, limestone, and water that are incurred in generating a fixed net quantity of electricity. The development of sound public policy requires that environmental regulations be sensitive to adverse effects in all environmental media, and that tradeoffs involved in the regulation of specific pollutants to one medium be rigorously and systematically characterized.  相似文献

In the production of metallurgical coke, the hot, incandescent coke just removed from the ovens must be cooled rapidly for subsequent handling and to prevent it’s burning. Cooling is usually carried out in quenching stations by spraying with large quantities of water. The violent evaporation of the water results in a carryover of solid particles and liquid mist up the stack of the quench station and into the atmosphere. A research study was conducted to determine means to reduce the emission of particulates from the quench stations. The results of the study showed that louver-type wooden impingement baffles installed in the stack will significantly reduce emissions without interfering with production operations.  相似文献

This paper describes a comprehensive set of economic models developed to assess the air pollution control costs of alternative systems for generating electricity from coal. Models of individual system components were formulated based on engineering and statistical analyses of other detailed models and data reported in the literature for currently available technologies. The air pollution control options modeled include 4 levels of physical coal cleaning, 3 types of dry fly ash collectors, a wet limestone FGD system, and 2 options for solid waste disposal. In addition, the cost of a power plant with no air pollution controls was modeled to determine the total system cost, including energy needed to operate environmental control systems. The principal criteria guiding the development of these models were that they be (1) computationally simple and economical to use, with a minimum of detailed data requirements, (2) sensitive to variations in pollutant emission regulations, coal characteristics, and key plant design parameters, and (3) systematic, based on a specified amount of power production and the same constant dollars. Extensive sensitivity analyses and case studies performed with these models indicate excellent agreement with the results of other studies and models applicable only to individual environmental control options. Applications of these models are discussed and illustrative results presented.  相似文献

The importance of fuels combustion was brought into sharp focus recently in a report on air pollution to the United States Senate in which it was stated, “These processes replace usable air with potentially harmful pollutants, and the capability of the atmosphere to disperse and dilute these pollutants—especially in urban areas where people, vehicles, and industries congregate in even greater numbers—is strictly limited.”1 The overwhelming burden of emissions of sulfur compounds, as well as nitrogen compounds and particulate matter in the U. S. today, originates from the burning of coal and fuel oil in stationary combustion sources. Thus, combustion has a large influence on the quality of the atmosphere in most urban areas. The air pollution effects of these contaminants are many and varied and all are objectionable and undesirable. Without a doubt, the most serious air pollution problem in the nation today is that created by the combustion of fossil fuels.  相似文献

Some mercury (Hg) naturally present in coal is retained in the fly ash remaining after combustion. Concern has been raised regarding the potential for release of this Hg to the environment. The exchange of Hg between fly ash and the atmosphere was measured in the laboratory and in situ at a fly ash landfill. All samples of fly ash used in the laboratory study, with the exception of that derived from lignite-type coal, acted as a sink for atmospheric Hg. Deposition rates were found to increase as air Hg concentrations increased and to decrease with incident light and increased temperature. Addition of water to fly ash samples resulted in re-emission of deposited atmospheric Hg. Deposition was the dominant flux measured in situ at a fly ash landfill. Atmospheric Hg was deposited to all samples collected as part of two demonstration projects using carbon injection for enhanced Hg capture. Hg concentrations of extracts derived using U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Method 1312 (Synthetic Precipitation Leaching Procedure) were ≤14.4 ng/L. Data developed demonstrate that fly ash, including that collected from Hg removal projects, will release little Hg to the air or water, and under certain conditions, absorbs Hg from the air.  相似文献

Recent studies of mortality among coke plant workers indicate that there is an excess of respiratory cancer among men employed at the coke ovens and that the mortality is related to work areas and length of exposure to coal tar effluents, the body of information presented in this paper is directed to categorization of coke oven jobs into different work areas in terms of exposure to coal tar pitch volatiles developing an index of cumulative exposure to investigate the dose-response relationship between exposure and mortality. The exposure data have been taken from a study conducted by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, State Division of Occupational Health, and mortality data are based on a long-term study of steelworkers, conducted by the Department of Biostatistics, University of Pittsburgh. A summary index calculated for each worker combining the level of exposure and length of time exposed indicates that, as expected, both these factors are related to the development of cancer, particularly cancers of the respiratory system.

Conclusions of note are: Measured levels of coal tar pitch volatiles are 2-3 times higher for men who work at the top of coke ovens as compared to men employed at the side of the ovens. Even though the specific carcinogenic element or elements in the coke oven environment are not known at the present time, in-. creasing levels of exposure to coal tar pitch volatiles are related to art increased risk of dying from malignant neoplasms. Further coal tar pitch volatile measurements need to be made and analyses designed which will specify the dose-response relationship more precisely. This will provide information necessary to evaluate the recommended Threshold Limit Value.  相似文献

Air-surface exchange of mercury (Hg) was measured from soil low in Hg (0.013 mg/kg) amended with four different ash materials: a wood ash containing ~10% coal ash (0.070 mg/kg Hg), a mixture of two subbituminous coal fly ashes (0.075 mg/kg Hg), a subbituminous coal ash containing ~10% petroleum coke ash (1.2 mg/kg Hg), and an ash from incinerated municipal sewage sludge (4.3 mg/kg Hg) using a dynamic flux chamber. Ash was added to soil to simulate agricultural supplements, soil stabilization, and pad layers used in livestock areas. For the agricultural amendment, ~0.4% ash was well mixed into the soil. To make the stabilized soil that could be used for construction purposes, ~20% ash was mixed into soil with water. The pad layer consisted of a wetted 1-cm layer of ash material on the soil surface. Diel trends of Hg flux were observed for all of the substrates with significantly higher Hg emissions during the day and negligible flux or deposition of Hg during the night. Hg fluxes, which were measured in the summer months, were best correlated with solar radiation, temperature, and air O3 concentrations. Mean Hg fluxes measured outdoors for unamended soils ranged from 19 to 140 ng/m2 day, whereas those for soil amended with ash to simulate an agricultural application ranged from 7.2 to 230 ng/m2 day. Fluxes for soil stabilized with ash ranged from 77 to 530 ng/m2 day and for soil with pads constructed of ash ranged from ?50 to 90 ng/m2 day. Simple analytical tests (i.e., total Hg content, synthetic precipitation leaching procedure, heating, and indoor gas-exchange experiments) were performed to assess whether algorithms based on these tests could be used to predict Hg fluxes observed outdoors using the flux chamber. Based on this study, no consistent relationships could be developed. More work is needed to assess long-term and seasonal variations in Hg flux from (intact and disturbed) substrates before annual estimates of emissions can be developed.  相似文献

Atmospheric mercury in the environment as a result of the consumption of fossil fuels, such as coal used in electricity generation, has gained increased attention worldwide because of its toxicity, atmospheric persistence, and bioaccumulation. Determining or predicting the concentration of this pollutant in ambient air is essential for determining sensitive areas requiring health protection. This study investigated the spatiotemporal variability of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) concentrations and its dry deposition surrounding the Presidente Plutarco Elías Calles (CETEPEC) coal-fired power plant, located on Mexico’s Pacific coast. The CALPUFF dispersion model was applied on the basis of the daily consumption of coal during 2013 for each generating unit in the power plant and considering the local scale. The established 300-ng/m3 annual average risk factor considered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (U.S. DHHS) and Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) must not be exceeded to meet satisfactory air quality levels. An area of 65 × 60 km was evaluated, and the results show that the risk level for mercury vapor was not exceeded because the annual average concentration was 2.8 ng/m3. Although the predicted risk level was not exceeded, continuous monitoring studies of GEM and of particulates in the atmosphere, soil, and water may be necessary to identify the concentration of this pollutant, specifically that resulting from coal-fired power plants operated in environmental areas of interest in Mexico. The dry mercury deposition was low in the study area; according to the CALPUFF model, the annual average was 1.40E?2 ng/m2/sec. These results represent a starting point for Mexico’s government to implement the Minamata Convention on Mercury, which Mexico signed in 2013.

Implications: The obtained concentrations of mercury from a bigger coal-fired plant in Mexico, through the application of the CALPUFF dispersion model by the mercury emissions, are below the level recommended according to the US Department of Health and Human Services and Integrated Risk Information System. These results provide evidence of important progress in the planning and installation to the future of monitoring mercury stations in the area of interest.  相似文献

The ability to predict the temperature dependence of air/water partitioning is important for the environmental fate modeling of organic pollutants. Here, literature data for the temperature dependence of air/water partitioning of some 200 compounds have been used to derive poly-parameter linear free energy relationships (pp-LFER) for predicting air/water partition coefficients at temperatures between 0 and 45 degrees C. The compounds used for calibrating the pp-LFERs span a range of almost 10 orders of magnitude in the partition constants and they cover a large variety of functional groups. Very good fits (r(2)>0.99) were obtained at all temperatures. Hence, these pp-LFERs should serve as a valuable tool for integrating the temperature dependence of air/water partitioning into fate modeling of organic compounds. In the environment one will quite often encounter a situation where water and air do not have the same temperatures. This situation is shortly discussed in the appendix.  相似文献

Gaseous wastes and particulate emissions are produced in the process of burning coal to produce electrical energy. In attempting to control these gaseous wastes, changes in the operation efficiency of boilers and secondary equipment are likely to result, and in addition liquid and solid waste streams are produced. The interrelationships among the various forms of wastes and the effects of air quality control on process efficiency are often overlooked in studies of environmental quality management.

The study was undertaken to evaluate the technical alternatives for handling gaseous and particulate emissions from coal-fired boilers and to determine the feasibility of meeting several standards simultaneously. The gaseous emissions of major importance in the combustion of coal are parti culates, oxides of sulfur, and oxides of nitrogen. Particulates can be controlled by a tradeoff among further preparation at the mine (for additional ash removal), type of boiler, use of dust control equipment and high stacks for dispersion of residual emissions, if ambient air standards are considered. Oxides of sulfur reduction depends currently on fuel substitution, limestone additives in the boiler and some form of contact process such as wet scrubbing, or the use of high stacks. Oxides of nitrogen control in coal fired boilers is restricted to small reductions by either changes in boiler operation, such as lower excess air levels, adsorption during wet scrubbing or by dispersion from high stacks.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to determine which of several alternative air pollution abatement systems affords the most economical solution to the control of atmospheric emissions during the charging of coal into by-product coke ovens. The study was limited to the consideration of existing by-product batteries, and the assumption was made that no coking plant has the alternative to do nothing nor will the plant choose to delay abatement through legal procedures. The data indicate that a jumper pipe installation with a new larry car provides the most economical control.  相似文献
