Fluoridated salt is an effective method to reduce dental decay in the population at large, in particular in settings where the more frequently used method of fluoridated water is not feasible due to unreliable water supplies. A salient problem of regular dosage and monitoring of fluoride in salt is its variable level at the industrial level. To evaluate the relative advantages of the present monitoring method used in Mexico, samples of domestic fluoridated salt were analysed by two comparative methods to determine their fluoride content. One of the methods employed was the relevant Mexican Official Norm (based on an acetic acid, sodium chloride, trans-1,2-diamine, cyclohexane N,N,N′,N′ tetracetic acid buffer solution) and the other was an alternative electrochemical methodology (based on an acetic acid, sodium chloride, sodium citrate buffer solution). The cost of the chemicals involved and simplicity of the alternative method, along with the equivalent precision of its results, makes it an interesting choice for the large scale analysis of fluoridated salt.  相似文献

In this study, we attempted to establish a new indicator for fecal pollution of river sediment using a sensitive detection method for urobilin. Urobilin contained in sediment was extracted with an alkaline buffer solution. The suitable buffer solution for extraction of urobilin consisted of 0.1 M Tris-HCl buffer (pH 10.0) containing 0.1 m sodium chloride. The ratio of sediment to buffer was 1:10. The distribution of urobilin in river sediment was studied by this method. The amount of urobilin in the river sediment of Tokyo (urban) and the Miura peninsula (rural) area was surveyed. Large quantities of urobilin were detected in the sediments of the urban rivers, but it was scarce in the rural rivers. Urobilin showed a higher content in sediment than in water. Urobilin in river sediment is distributed in large amounts in the lower reaches, where the water is polluted with domestic sewage and industrial waste, but is scarce in the upper streams. As part of their tailings management, the oil sand industries plan on producing consolidated (composite) tailings (CT), in which an inorganic coagulant aid (gypsum) is added to create a non-segregating deposit. The water associated with this treatment contains potentially phytotoxic levels of sodium, sulfate, chloride, boron, aluminum, fluoride and strontium. Since CT water is expected to saturate deposits in the reclamation areas, it may affect successful reclamation of these sites. Red-osier dogwood (Cornus stolonifera Michx) was demonstrated to be relatively salt resistant and to have high potential for the reclamation of mining areas. In the present study, we used red-osier dogwood to examine the effects of CT water on the accumulation of ions within plant tissue, growth, gas exchange, water potentials and chlorophyll concentration. CT water reduced shoot lengths and dry weights in treated plants. The roots of treated plants accumulated higher concentrations of sodium and chloride than did shoots. The accumulation of sodium and chloride was accompanied by an increase in magnesium and calcium and a decrease in potassium in the roots, while the levels of potassium increased in the leaves. CT water altered gas exchange and water potentials in seedlings, and resulted in a decrease in chlorophyll's a and b. The results suggest that the mechanisms of salt resistance in red-osier dogwood seedlings involve the restriction of sodium transport from roots to shoots.  相似文献

Trace amounts (microg g(-1) quantities) of fluoride ion are found to catalyse the dissolution of metallic aluminium in very slightly acidic or alkaline aqueous media. Possibly hazardous levels of aluminium could get leached from cooking utensils if fluoridated water or fluoride rich foodstuffs are used. The fluoride assisted corrosion of aluminium is most dramatic in oxalic, tartaric acids or sodium bicarbonate. Carbon dioxide also corrodes aluminium in the presence of the fluoride ion, generating colloidal hydrated aluminium oxide which is readily soluble in dilute organic and mineral acids.  相似文献

Analyte concentrations in aqueous leachates from polyethylene tanks filled with five different solid wastes were compared with those in extracts from five laboratory batch procedures. Solid wastes used in the study included: electroplating sludge, electric arc furnace dust, paint Incinerator ash, mine tailings, and municipal refuse incinerator ash. Batch extraction procedures used to extract the solid wastes Included: Monofilled Waste Extraction Procedure (MWEP), U.S. EPA Extraction Procedure (EP), Ham Procedure C (HAM-C), Acetate Buffer Extraction Procedure (ABEP), and Saturated Paste Procedure (PASTE).

Analyte concentrations in leachate from the large columns were reproducible and characteristic of each solid waste. In most Instances, analytes in column leachate reached a peak concentration at a liquld-to-solid ratio of 1:1 followed by a gradual to rapid decrease with continued leaching. Analyte concentrations found in large column leachate were related qualitatively to those found in extracts from the batch procedures which used delonlzed water as the extraction medium (i.e., MWEP, HAM-C, and PASTE). Batch extraction procedures using leaching medium containing acetic acid (I.e., EP) or sodium acetate buffer (i.e., ABEP) generally did not reflect analyte concentrations in leachate from the large columns. These results suggest that batch extraction procedures using acetic acid or acetate buffer are less effective for assessing the teachability of monofilled wastes than extraction methods using deionized water as the extraction fluid.  相似文献

Electrochemical treatment can solve the problems arising due to effluents and offer an effective alternative to the existing methods. An undivided static electrolyser was charged with distillery effluent and the organics were oxidized electrochemically. Anodized graphite plate anodes and graphite cathodes were used for the treatment of distillery effluent. The effect of pH and current density on the treatment was studied. Sodium fluoride, sodium chloride and sodium bromide were chosen as electrolyte and their influence was found out. Complete decolorization has been observed in all cases. A maximum of 93.5% of biological oxygen demand reduction, 85.2% of chemical oxygen demand reduction and 98.0% absorbance reduction were obtained in the presence of sodium chloride as supporting electrolyte. Probable mechanism was also proposed for the oxidation of organics present in the effluent.  相似文献

This paper describes a micro method for the determination of the fluoride content of plant materials, particularly the leaves. The samples are dried and ground to a fine powder. Fifty milligram samples are burned in oxygen in 250-ml separatory funnels or in 300-ml Erienmeyer flasks. The gaseous products of the combustion are absorbed in 0.1 N NaOH in the closed funnel or flask and transferred to a small covered plastic dish in which the fluoride is diffused to tiny droplets of 3N sodium hydroxide solution distributed over the lower side of a tight fitting cover. The diffused fluoride is dissolved in water and determined colori-metrically by the SPADNS reagent.  相似文献

本实验研究了石灰乳和铝酸钠处理废水中的氟离子和氯离子的效果。通过正交实验得出:影响除氟离子效果因素的主次顺序为:pH值>氟离子浓度>反应时间;影响除氯离子效果因素的主次顺序为:氯离子浓度>铝酸钠与氯离子的质量浓度比>反应时间。通过单因素实验得出:在pH=9、反应时间为5 min的条件下,废水中氟离子含量可由370.37mg/L降低到2 mg/L以下,去除率可达99.45%;在铝酸钠与氯离子的质量浓度比为1∶10,反应时间为5 min的条件下,废水中氯离子含量可由503.4 mg/L降低到201 mg/L以下,去除率可达60%。  相似文献

The ability of the natural zeolited Neapolitan Yellow Tuff (NYT) enriched with calcium ions to remove humic acids from water was evaluated by batch adsorption equilibrium tests and dynamic experiments carried out by percolating humic acid solutions through a small NYT column (breakthrough curves). Under the experimental condition explored, the sorption capacity increases with the ionic strength and has the highest value at pH 7.4. The partition coefficient for a low concentration of humic acid ([humic acid] --> 0), at pH 7.4 in 0.01 M sodium chloride, was approximately 1000 L/kg, versus the value of approximately 100 L/kg in the absence of the alkaline metal salt. Therefore, after humic acids have been adsorbed in a column filled with the calcium-ion-enriched tuff, a reduction of the salt concentration in the ongoing solution enhances the release of the adsorbed material. These findings show that NYT can be used for the removal of humic acids from water.  相似文献

Ion-exchange water softening results in the discharge of excess sodium chloride to the aquatic environment during the regeneration cycle. In order to reduce sodium chloride use and subsequent discharge from ion-exchange processes, either brine reclaim operations can be implemented or salt application during regeneration can be reduced. Both result in tradeoffs related to loss of bed volumes treated per cycle and increased hardness leakage. An experimentally validated model was used to compare concurrent water softening operations at various salt application quantities with and without the direct reuse of waste brine for treated tap water of typical midwestern water quality. Both approaches were able to reduce salt use and subsequent discharge. Reducing salt use and discharge by lowering the salt application rate during regeneration consequently increased hardness leakage and decreased treatment capacity. Single or two tank brine recycling systems are capable of reducing salt use and discharge without increasing hardness leakage, although treatment capacity is reduced.  相似文献

This investigation used an acid medium for sampling atmospheric oxidants. The acid iodide oxidant procedure was unaffected by air or oxygen, temperature variance, and reducing gases (sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide.) The method possessed good color stability. The method also agreed favorably with the 1 or 2% neutral buffered iodide method when a chromium trioxide scrubber was required to remove the reducing gases from the latter procedure.

The acid oxidant absorption solution of 1 3 ml in a midget impinger contained 10 ml of 1.5% potassium iodide in a 0.1 N sodium hydroxide solution and 3 ml of acetic acid (1:5) which produced a solution of approximately 3.8 pH. Particulate matter was removed by a glass wool attachment to the midget impinger. The air was sampled with a Gelman Sequential Sampler at the rate of 1.41 liters per minute. After the oxidant sample was collected, the absorbing solution was transferred to a graduated cylinder and the volume was adjusted to 25 ml with distilled water. The absorbance was read at 355 millimicrons wavelength by a spectrophotometer in a 1 cm cell. The acid oxidant method was effective between 1 to 70 pphm of ozone.  相似文献

Tanning processes performed in drums consume large amounts of water and chemicals, most of which end up in the wastewater. This study explores an alternative approach at an industrial scale to the traditional pickle-chrome tanning method. The new method replaces formic and sulphuric acids with sulphonic aromatic acid. Because it is done without float, there is a sizeable reduction in the amount of added salt and chrome salt as well as an increase in temperatures at the end of the tanning process. From an environmental perspective, the new method offers important advantages. For instance, there is no float addition in the tannage. Also, there are reductions of 94% and 99%, respectively, in the discharge of chlorides and chrome, as well as a 75% reduction in the residual float. Our financial assessment demonstrated that the new method is 42% cheaper than a traditional approach.  相似文献

The filtration characteristics of simulated dyeing effluents containing Acid Orange 7, sodium sulfate, and a pH buffer made of acetic acid and sodium acetate is described using a commercially available nanofiltration membrane. The original membrane filtration properties were characterized with deionized water to provide a baseline of membrane performance. At high volumetric concentration of the test solutions, greater than 98% rejection of dye and sodium sulfate were obtained. Rejection of buffering chemicals was approximately 50% in all experiments, giving a permeate water not suitable for reuse in most dyeing operations. The final composite concentrate had a chemical oxygen demand (COD) value > 2000 mg/L. No problems were encountered with anaerobic treatment of the concentrate obtained from the dyeing wastewater. Adjusting the sulfate concentration to give COD-to-sulfate ratios to 2.9, 5.4, and 18.2 in the reactor feed had no significant alterations in the performance of the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor.  相似文献

Sodium chloride affects the transformation rate of several compounds in bioreactors. Most authors report a decrease in microorganism activity at increasing salt concentrations. In this work, a kinetic model that relates sodium chloride concentration with the rates of each step of the nitrification process is proposed; thus, the effect of sodium chloride concentration (0 to 60 g/L) on the nitritation and nitratation rates was separately studied. To carry out the independent study of each step, a combination of the respirometric method with sodium azide, an inhibitor of the nitratation step, was performed. The dot-blot hybridization technique with 16S rRNA-targeted probes was used to determine the ammonia-oxidizing and nitrite-oxidizing bacterial fraction, then it was possible to relate the culture's function with its biological composition. Rates of both steps were linearly reduced at increasing salt concentrations: the nitratation rate was more affected than the nitritation rate. Simulations carried out in a nitrifying sequencing batch reactor indicate that nitrite might accumulate at high salt concentrations. Sodium chloride exerts a reversible inhibition on ammonia oxidation and nitrite oxidation.  相似文献

Bone fluoride in short-tailed voles (Microtus agrestis) and common shrews (Sorex araneus), the prey of barn owls (Tyto alba), was studied on Anglesey, North Wales. The average fluoride content of M. agrestis skulls obtained from a location 0.9 km from an aluminium reduction plant was significantly greater than that of skulls from another location 22 km from the source of industrial fluoride pollution. At both locations, mean fluoride levels of skulls extracted from owl pellets and those of voles trapped mechanically were broadly similar but important differences existed. Near the aluminium reduction plant, owls caught voles and shrews with a much wider range of fluoride levels than occurred at a single trapping site. However, there was no evidence for selection of heavily fluoridated prey. Within 1 km of the aluminium reduction plant, six trapping sites yielded S. araneus with a fourfold difference between the highest and lowest mean bone fluoride level.  相似文献

Transport and retardation of non-sorbing tritiated water and chloride and slightly sorbing sodium was studied in Syyry area SY-KR7 mica gneiss, in altered porous tonalite and in fresh tonalite. Experiments were performed using dynamic fracture and crushed rock column methods. Static batch method for sodium was introduced to compare retardation values from static and dynamic experiments. The 14C-PMMA method was used to study the pore structure of matrices. The pore aperture distribution was evaluated from Hg-porosimetry determinations and the surface areas were determined using the B.E.T. method. The flow characteristics and transport behavior of tracers were interpreted using a numerical compartment model for dispersion. The effect of matrix diffusion was calculated using an analytical solution to the advection-matrix diffusion problem in which surface retardation was taken into account. Radionuclide transport behavior in rock fractures was explained on the basis of rock structure.  相似文献

A semi-automated method for determination of fluorine in biological materials has been developed incorporating the Technicon AutoAnalyzer. One-half gram of dried, ground plant material is ashed, alkali-fused, diluted with water, and the suspension is pumped, along with H2SO4, at controlled rates, into the hot revolving glass helix of a digestor unit. As the acid-digest mixture passes through the heated coil, volatile fluoride and water vapor are evolved. The volatile fluoride and water vapor are pulled from the helix under reduced pressure through a tube which projects into the helix. The tube, in turn, is connected to a water-jacketed condenser and then to an impinger where the sample is continuously mixed. An aliquot of the impinger liquid is being constantly withdrawn. This sample is then air-segmented and mixed with a reagent containing alizarin complexone, pH 4 acetate buffer, lanthanum nitrate, acetone, and water. The sample-reagent combination passes through 4 full-length mixing coils where color development takes place. Upon reacting with fluoride, the wine-red alizarin complexone-La(III) reagent forms a lilac blue fluoride complex. The solution is pumped from the mixing coils through the tubular flow cell of the colorimeter. The absorbence of the solution is measured at 624 mμ, and the signal is transmitted to a recorder where the results are plotted on absorbency paper. The absorbence at the apex of the peak is proportional to the amount of fluoride in the sample between the range of 2.5-80 μg °F. Samples are analyzed at a rate of 12 per hour. Results compare favorably with those obtained by Willard-Winter distillation. Recent studies indicate that the F content of plant tissues can be estimated without prior ashing and fusion  相似文献

硫酸铅可以在柠檬酸钠-乙酸体系中脱硫转化生成柠檬酸铅。考察了柠檬酸钠投加量、反应时间、固液比以及反应温度对PbSO4浸出转化的影响。实验结果表明,PbSO4的转化率随着柠檬酸钠投加量和反应时间的增加而增大,固液比和反应温度对浸出过程影响不大。溶液中溶解的铅含量随着柠檬酸钠投加量的增大而增大,其他条件对其影响不明显。最佳浸出工艺条件是:柠檬酸钠与PbSO。的物质的量之比为2:1,固液比为1/5~1/3,反应温度为25℃,反应时间为2h,此时PbSO4的转化率可达到99%左右,溶液中的铅含量为总铅的3.8%左右。PbSO4浸出得到[Pb,(C。H,O,),]·3H2O,它在350℃左右可完全分解,得到PbO/Pb粉末。  相似文献

This study tests an alternative method to the traditional unhairing method used during the process of tanning the hides. The new method is based on the substitution of sodium sulfide by hydrogen peroxide as an unhairing agent in both hair recovery and recirculation of the floats employed in the process. The properties of the hides obtained using the two methods have been compared and the results indicate that those hides have similar physical, chemical, and organoleptic properties. However, the differences existing from an environmental point of view are significant. These include reductions of water consumption (approx 70%), chemical oxygen demand (approx 35%), toxicity (98%) and total kjendhal nitrogen (50%). Also, the risk associated with the production of hydrogen sulfide is eliminated, which implies a great improvement in terms of safety for the workers. Given the large amounts of water and chemical pollution discharged in the process, the reductions in absolute values represent a significant improvement. A financial assessment was carried out to demonstrate that the proposed new system is 16% more economic than the traditional one.  相似文献
