By a soil column liquid chromatograph (SCLC) method, the soil organic carbon content normalized adsorption coefficients (K(oc)) of six polybrominated biphenyls (PBB15, PBB26, PBB31, PBB49, PBB103 and PBB153) are determined. Based on the similarity between the molecular structures of PBBs and PCBs, a simple linear predictive model has been developed with the correlation coefficient R=0.9812 and standard error SE=0.19. The logK(oc) values of any PBB congeners can be predicted by using the logK(oc) values of the corresponding PCBs according to this model. Using the published data for logK(oc) values of PCB congeners, logK(oc) values of all 209 PBB congeners have been for the first time predicted. Compared with the data obtained from the experiment, the results of prediction are very accurate.  相似文献

The n-octanol/water partition coefficient (K(ow)) is commonly used to predict the soil or aquatic particle water partition coefficient normalized to organic carbon (K(oc)). Many correlations are available covering several chemical classes and ranges of hydrophobicity. This work indicates the K(ow) may not be a strong predictor for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) which are defined here as chemicals with logK(ow) > 5.0. In addition, the correlation developed in this work for POPs will still result in a predicted value which is of by a factor of 15. Accordingly, care must be taken when applying K(oc) estimations using K(ow) for POPs until more suitable correlations are developed.  相似文献

The estimation of solute sorptive behaviors is essential when direct sorption data are unavailable and will provide a convenient way to assess the fate and the biological activity of organic solutes in soil/sediment environments. In this study, the sorption of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) on 19 soil/sediment samples and the sorption of 13 organic solutes on one sediment were investigated. All sorption isotherms are nonlinear and can be described satisfactorily by a simple dual-mode model (DMM): q(e)=KpCe+Q0 . bCe/(1+bCe), where Kp (mlg(-1)) is the partition coefficient; Ce (microgml(-1)) is the equilibrium concentration; Q0 (microgg(-1)) is the maximum adsorption capacity; Q0 . b (mlg(-1)) is the Langmuir-type isotherm slope in the low concentration (Henry's law) range and b (mlmicrog(-1)) is a constant related to the affinity of the surface for the solute. Based on these nonlinear sorption isotherms and similar other nonlinear isotherms, it is observed that, for both polar 2,4-DCP and nonpolar phenanthrene, Kp, Q0 and Q0 . b are linearly correlated with soil/sediment organic carbon content (f(oc) in the range of 0.118-53.7%). The results indicate that the nonlinear sorption of organic solutes results primarily from interactions with soil/sediment organic matter. The K*oc K*oc=Kp/f(oc)), Qoc (Qoc=Q0/f(oc)), Loc (Loc=Q0 . b/f(oc)) and b for a given organic solute with different soils/sediments are largely invariant. Furthermore, logK*oc, logb and logLoc for various organic solutes are correlated significantly with the solute logKow or logSw (logKow in the range of 0.9 to 5.13 and logSw in the range of -6.176 to -0.070). A fundamental empirical equation was then established to calculate approximately the nonlinear sorption from soil/sediment f(oc) and solute Sw for a given solute equilibrium concentration.  相似文献

The fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils with co-contaminants of heavy metals has yet to be elucidated. This study examined sorption of phenanthrene as a representative of PAHs by three soils contaminated with Pb, Zn or Cu. Phenanthrene sorption was clearly higher after the addition of heavy metals. The distribution coefficient (K(d)) and the organic carbon-normalized distribution coefficient (K(oc)) for phenanthrene sorption by soils spiked with Pb, Zn or Cu (0-1000 mg kg(-1)) were approximately 24% larger than those by unspiked ones, and the higher contents of heavy metals added into soils resulted in the larger K(d) and K(oc) values. The enhanced sorption of phenanthrene in the case of heavy metal-contaminated soils could be ascribed to the decreased dissolved organic matter (DOM) in solution and increased soil organic matter (SOM) as a consequence of DOM sorption onto soil solids. Concentrations of DOM in equilibrium solution for phenanthrene sorption were lower in the case of the heavy metal-spiked than unspiked soils. However, the decreased DOM in solution contributed little to the enhanced sorption of phenanthrene in the presence of metals. On the other hand, the sorbed DOM on soil solids after the addition of heavy metals in soils was found to be much more reactive and have far stronger capacity of phenanthrene uptake than the inherent SOM. The distribution coefficients of phenanthrene between water and the sorbed DOM on soil solids (K(ph/soc)) were about 2-3 magnitude larger than K(d) between water and inherent SOM, which may be the dominant mechanism of the enhanced sorption of phenanthrene by soils with the addition of heavy metals.  相似文献

Sorption of dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP) and dipropyl phthalate (DPP) to two soil materials that vary in organic matter content was investigated using miscible displacement experiments under saturated flow conditions. Generated breakthrough curves (BTCs) were inversely simulated using linear, equilibrium sorption (LE), nonlinear, equilibrium sorption (NL), linear, first-order nonequilibrium sorption (LFO), linear, radial diffusion (LRD), and nonlinear, first-order nonequilibrium sorption (NFO) models. The Akaike information criterion was utilized to determine the preferred model. The LE model could not adequately describe phthalate ester (PE) BTCs in higher organic matter soil or for more hydrophobic PEs. The LFO and LRD models adequately described the BTCs but a slight improvement in curve-fitting was gained in some cases when the NFO model was used. However, none of the models could properly describe the desorptive tail of DPP for the high organic matter soil. Transport of DPP through this soil was adequately predicted when degradation or sorption hysteresis was considered. Using the optimized parameter values along with values reported by others it was shown that the organic carbon distribution coefficient (K(oc)) of PEs correlates well with the octanol/water partition coefficient (K(ow)). Also, a strong relationship was found between the first-order sorption rate coefficient normalized to injection pulse size and compound residence time. A similar trend of timescale dependence was found for the rate parameter in the radial diffusion model. Results also revealed that the fraction of instantaneous sorption sites is dependent on K(ow) and appears to decrease with the increase in the sorption rate parameter.  相似文献

Sorption of acetamiprid ((E)-N1-[(6-chloro-3-pyridyl)methyl]-N2-cyano-N1-methylacetamidine), carbendazim (methyl benzimidazol-2-ylcarbamate), diuron (N-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-N, N-dimethyl urea) and thiamethoxam (3-(2-chloro-thiazol-5-ylmethyl)-5-methyl-[1,3,5]oxadiazinan-4-ylidene-N-nitroamine) was evaluated in two Brazilian tropical soils, Oxisol and Entisol, from Primavera do Leste region, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. To describe the sorption process, batch experiments were carried out. Linear and Freundlich isotherm models were used to calculate the K(d) and K(f) coefficients from experimental data. The K(d) values were utilized to calculate the partition coefficient normalized to soil organic carbon (K(oc)). For the pesticides acetamiprid, carbendazim, diuron and thiamenthoxan the K(oc) (mL g(- 1)) values ranged in both soils from 98 - 3235, 1024 - 2644, 145 - 2631 and 104 - 2877, respectively. From the studied pesticides, only carbendazim presented correlation (r(2) = 0.82 and p < 0.01) with soil organic carbon (OC) content. Acetamiprid and thiamethoxam showed low sorption coefficients, representing a high risk of surface and ground water contamination.  相似文献

Humic substances (HS) have a critical influence on the sorption of organic contaminants by soils and sediments. This paper describes investigations into the sorption behavior of three representative endocrine disruptors, bisphenol A (BPA), 17beta-estradiol (E2), and 17alpha-ethynylestradiol (EE2), onto sediments and HS extracted sediments using a batch technique. The organic carbon-normalized partition coefficients (K(oc)) for the extracted HS (K(oc)(hs)) were calculated, and the fluorescence spectra of the HS extraced from different sediment samples were gained using excitation/emission matrix (EEM). Particular attention was paid to the correlations between the fluorescence characteristics of HS and the log K(oc)(hs) of selected endocrine disruptors. The results show that the log K(oc)(hs) values range from 3.14 to 4.09 for BPA, from 3.47 to 4.33 for E2, and from 3.65 to 4.32 for EE2. Two characteristic excitation-emission peaks were observed for HS samples extracted from sediments. They are located at Ex/Em=250-260 nm/400-450 nm (peak alpha') and Ex/Em=310-330 nm/390-400 nm (peak alpha) respectively. The alpha' and alpha peak relative intensities I(alpha')/I(alpha) vary from 0.46 to 1.64 for different extracted HS samples. The similarity between fulvic acids (FA) Ex/Em pairs and those observed for HS indicates that FA is the predominant fraction of HS extracted from sediments. Moreover, the log K(oc)(hs) values of BPA, E2, and EE2 have a negative linear correlation to I(alpha')/I(alpha) values. Peak alpha is often attributed to relatively stable and high molecular weight aromatic fulvic-like matter. Therefore, the result presented here reveals that the abundance of aromatic rings in HS molecular structure plays a critical role in the sorption of selected endocrine disruptors.  相似文献

Equilibrium partitioning of hydrophobic (14)C-benzo(a)pyrene and hydrophilic (14)C-benazolin between fractionated phases from an arable topsoil of Merzenhausen (Germany) was investigated. Topsoil samples were collected from lysimeters which were incubated with different residual crops. A physical soil fractionation based on sedimentation and centrifugation steps was performed after water extraction. Four soil phases were obtained designated sediment (SED) phase (>20 microm), microaggregate (MA) phase (2 microm-20 microm), colloid (COL) phase (<2 microm) and electrolyte (EL) phase. The distribution of (14)C-benzo(a)pyrene, (14)C-benazolin and organic carbon between the soil phases was established. Enrichment factors for the two chemicals and organic carbon are higher in the COL and MA phases than in the SED phase. The distribution constant K(d) of chemicals for Merzenhausen topsoil was calculated according to two-phase or three-phase partitioning models. The three-phase partitioning model presumes the contribution of the organic carbon for the binding of chemicals. A log K(oc) of 5.55 can be calculated in the case of (14)C-benzo(a)pyrene, which is typical of the hydrophobic association with the soil organic carbon. In the case of (14)C-benazolin, much higher K(d) and K(oc) values were calculated than found with parent molecules after short-time experiments. Long-term aging processes must be considered. Specific effects on the chemical distribution due to the different crop residues were not detected.  相似文献

The apparent water solubility of pentachlorophenol was measured at pH=6 and at 25 degrees C in pure water, aqueous solutions of three salts (NaCl, KNO(3) and CaCl(2) at 0.010, 0.10 and 1.0M) and in aqueous solutions of three fulvic acids samples extracted from a natural soil (sFA), composted sewage sludge (csFA) and composted livestock's material (lsFA). A solubility enhancement method was developed for the measurement of partition coefficients (K(oc), L/kg organic carbon). Pentachlorophenol associates strongly with the fulvic acid samples and the calculated K(oc) were the following (averages and standard deviations): (sFA) (211+/-22) x 10(2), (csFA) (253+/-26) x 10(2), (lsFA) (235+/-10) x 10(2). For comparison purposes the K(oc) for pyrene were also calculated for the three FA samples and were the following: (sFA) (119+/-10) x 10(2), (csFA) (239+/-21) x 10(2), (lsFA) (92+/-10) x 10(2). The analysis of variance (one-way ANOVA) of the effect of the type of FA sample on the solubilization of pentachlorophenol and pyrene shows that this factor causes significant differences on the aqueous solubilization of these two organic substances.  相似文献

Sorption behavior of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) (i.e., pyrene, phenanthrene and naphthalene) by native and chemically modified biopolymers (lignin, chitin and cellulose) was examined. Lignins (native and treated) showed nonlinear sorption for all compounds studied, emphasizing their glassy character. Chitins and celluloses had linear isotherms for phenanthrene and naphthalene, illustrating the dominance of partitioning, while pyrene yielded nonlinear isotherms. Sorption capacity (K(oc)) of HOCs was negatively correlated with the polarity [(O+N)/C] of the biopolymers. Aromatic and alkyl+aromatic C percentages, rather than alkyl C content, demonstrated a better correlation with K(oc) values, indicating the importance of aromatic structures for HOC affinity. Hydrophobicity (K(ow))-normalized K(oc) values decreased sharply with increasing percentage of O-alkyl C versus total aliphatic C (O-alkyl C/total aliphatic C) or with polar C/(alkyl+aromatic C) ratio of the biopolymers until their values reached 80% and 4, respectively, illustrating the effect of surrounding polar groups on reducing affinity for HOCs. Overall, the results of this study highlight the role of spatial arrangement of domains within biopolymers in sorption of HOCs, and point to sorbent properties, such as functionality, polarity and structure, jointly regulating the sorption of HOCs in biopolymers.  相似文献

Correlation relationships between physico-chemical properties including vapor pressures (P), water solubilities (S), Henry's law constants (H(c)), n-octanol-water partition coefficients (K(ow)), sediment-water partition coefficient (K(pw)) and biotic lipid-water partition coefficient (K(bw), bioconcentration factor) of polychlorinated-dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and their gas chromatographic retention indices (GC-RIs) were established. A model equation between GC-RIs (= RI) and these physico-chemical properties (K) of PCDFs was in a form of log K = aRI2 + bRI + c with correlation coefficients (R2) greater than 0.94, except H(c). These equations were derived from six experimental data (five experimental data for log K(bw)) in each physico-chemical properties of PCDFs reported previously. The values of log P, log S, log H(c), log K(ow), log K(pw) and log K(bw) of PCDFs predicted by these equations based on their GC-RIs in the present study derviated from those calculated by the solubility parameters for fate analysis method in a previous study by 0.49, 0.32, 0.11, 0.34, 0.14 and 0.22 log units, respectively.  相似文献

The contributions of organic matter and the mineral surface to the overall sorption of six nonpolar neutral organic compounds (1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, 1,4-dichlorobenzene, chlorobenzene, m-xylene, toluene, benzene) by five humic acid (HA)-coated sands with different fractions of organic carbon (f(oc)) ranging from 0.024% to 0.154% were evaluated on the basis of measured data and four different sorption models. Sorption of all six sorbates to both uncoated and heated sands was nearly linear due to the coverage of hydrophilic mineral surface with the ordered vicinal water region. Sorption of all six sorbates to the HA-coated sands was also essentially linear, and resulted from a combination of sorption to both organic matter and the mineral surface, with the dominance of either contribution depending on the properties of the sorbents (e.g., f(oc)) and the sorbates (e.g., K(ow)). A proposed two-component model for sorption including blocking effect was appropriate for quantifying the contributions of organic matter and the mineral surface to the overall sorption. However, conventional sorption models considering the contributions of both organic matter and the mineral surface provided essentially as good agreement between predicted and measured distribution coefficients as the more complicated, two-component model for sorption that takes into account mineral surface blocking by HA.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments to estimate the effective molecular diffusion coefficient (D(e)) and sorption coefficient (K(d)) for volatile organic compounds through natural clayey soils were conducted using diffusion testing apparatus. The compounds tested were methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), toluene and trichloroethylene (TCE). The D(e) and K(d) values were determined by a curve fitting procedure. The compound losses, and the effects of porous disks used in the apparatus were significant. The transport of MEK was faster than that of TCE and toluene because of the lower sorption to the soils. The D(e) values of all the compounds were of the order of 10(-10) m(2)/s and smaller than the diffusion coefficient in pure aqueous solution at infinite dilution (D(0)), due to the tortuosity of the samples. The effects of the sample thickness on the parameter determination were not significant. Comparison to the K(d) values estimated from batch sorption tests and from organic carbon content (f(oc))-based predictions showed that the diffusion test results were intermediate between those from the other two methods. The diffusion tests use compacted soil samples and should be more relevant to in situ conditions, but the reliability of the tests is affected by large compound losses that cause uncertainties in their interpretation. It is recommended that more than one method be used to assess K(d) values.  相似文献

Humic acids (HAs) are a major component of soil organic matter which strongly affects the sorption behavior of organic contaminants in soils. To assess the sorption-desorption characteristics of organic compounds on HAs, the organic adsorbent is usually isolated using an acid-base extraction method followed by air-drying or freeze-drying. In this study, a peat soil from the Yangming mountain area of Taiwan was sampled and repeatedly extracted followed by either air-drying or a non-drying treatment (denoted DHAs and NDHAs, respectively). The sorption of 2,4,6-TCP on HAs was evaluated using the batch method. Kinetic sorption results indicated that DHAs exhibited a two-step first-order sorption behavior, involving a rapid sorption followed by a slow sorption. The slow sorption may be attributed to the diffusion of 2,4,6-TCP through the condensed aromatic domains of HAs. On the contrary, the sorption of 2,4,6-TCP on NDHAs was extremely rapid, and the sorption data did not fit existing kinetic models. Each HA sample exhibited a nonlinear sorption isotherm. Sorption nonlinearity (represented by Freundlich N values) and K(oc) had a positive relationship with aliphaticity for DHAs; however, nonlinearity and K(oc) correlated positively with aromaticity when NDHAs adsorbents were used. We conclude that the air-drying technique may artificially create a more condensed area, which strongly affects the sorption characteristics of HAs. Thus, an incorrect evaluation of the sorption capacity and its relationship with the chemical composition of HAs would arise following use of the air-drying method.  相似文献

Multimedia mass balance models assume well-mixed homogeneous compartments. Particularly for soils, this does not correspond to reality, which results in potentially large uncertainties in estimates of transport fluxes from soils. A theoretically expected exponential decrease model of chemical concentrations with depth has been proposed, but hardly tested against empirical data. In this paper, we explored the correspondence between theoretically predicted soil concentration profiles and 84 field measured profiles. In most cases, chemical concentrations in soils appear to decline exponentially with depth, and values for the chemical specific soil penetration depth (d(p)) are predicted within one order of magnitude. Over all, the reliability of multimedia models will improve when they account for depth-dependent soil concentrations, so we recommend to take into account the described theoretical exponential decrease model of chemical concentrations with depth in chemical fate studies. In this model the d(p)-values should estimated be either based on local conditions or on a fixed d(p)-value, which we recommend to be 10cm for chemicals with a log K(ow)>3.  相似文献

Liquid aqueous solubility (S(w,L)), octanol/water partition coefficients (K(ow)), liquid vapor pressure (P(v,L)), and Henry's law constants (H(c)) were estimated for 20 methylated naphthalenes ranging from monomethyl to tetramethylnaphthalenes. Chromatographic methods were used for the estimation. Chromatographic retention measurements were conducted for 11 reference compounds and regressions were fit between the retention indices and the physicochemical properties. HPLC octadecylsilyl column with acetonitrile/water eluent was used for the estimation of S(w,L) and K(ow). Two GC columns, HP5-MS and a more hydrophobic HP-1, were tested for the estimation of P(v,L). Measured retention indices for the methylated naphthalenes were entered to the regression equations to calculate the physicochemical properties for these compounds. Literature values, where available, were used to validate the calculated values. The method accurately estimated the physicochemical properties. Estimated S(w,L) and P(v,L) decreased with the number of methyl groups. K(ow) increased with the number of methyl groups. There was no obvious relation between H(c) and the number of methyl groups. Log S(w,L) ranged from 0.885 for 1,2,5,6-tetramethylnaphthalene to 2.269 for 1-methylnaphthalene (mmol/m(3)). Log K(ow) varied from 3.89 for 1-methylnaphthalene to 4.95 for 1,2,5,6-tetramethylnaphthalene. Log P(v,L) ranged from -0.983 for 1,2,5,6-tetramethylnaphthalene to 0.789 for 2-methylnaphthalene (Pa). Log H(c) varied from 1.03 for 1,4,5-trimethylnaphthalene to 1.73 for 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene (Pa m(3)/mol). There were no apparent effects of GC column hydrophobicity on the accuracy of the results. Estimation of S(w,L) and K(ow) based on GC retention indices was not as accurate as with HPLC. Comparison of the estimated values with values predicted by EPIWIN indicated that EPIWIN is useful in giving order-of-magnitude prediction of physicochemical properties.  相似文献

Spatial distributions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in the water column and bottom sediments of the Houston Ship Channel in Texas were measured three times over a 1-year period. Total TEQ concentrations in water ranged from 0.01 to 0.25 pg/l for the dissolved phase and from 0.09 to 2.91 pg/l for the suspended phase, while TEQ concentrations in bottom sediments varied from 0.9 to 139.8 ng/kg dry wt. The dissolved concentrations were lower than their respective suspended concentrations, with average dissolved/suspended ratios between 0.11 and 0.59 for individual congeners. More than 89% of the total concentration of 2378-substituted PCDD/PCDFs was attributable to OCDD but 2378-TCDD was the major contributor to total TEQ for the three sampled media. Average logs of organic carbon-normalized suspended sediment-dissolved partitioning coefficients (logK(oc)(obs)) varied between 4.92 and 8.59 l/kg-oc; while in the bottom sediment-dissolved interface, logK(oc)(obs) values ranged from 5.48 to 8.48 l/kg-oc. Observed logK(oc)values varied within a factor of 0.64-1.26 from equilibrium logK(oc) values, suggesting fluxes of PCDD/PCDFs across the interfaces. It was found that in the HSC, on average, the tendency of a compound to move from the particulate phase to the dissolved phase decreases with increasing K(ow).  相似文献

Dissipation of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in soil was investigated and the chemical relationships with soil properties were addressed. The results indicate that the dissipation of extractable PCP residues can be described using first-order kinetics equations, with a half-dissipation time (T(1/2)) ranging from 6.5 to 173.3d. The sharply different patterns of PCP dissipation in different soils were closely related to soil properties. Correlations of stepwise regression equations obtained were significant at 0.01 probability level between soil parameters and extractable PCP residues (R(2)=0.974**) as well as T(1/2) values (R(2)=0.882**). Using pH together with organic carbon content (OC) and soil particle size distribution, the dissipation dynamics of PCP in soil could be accurately predicted.  相似文献

Basic physical-chemical properties of five bromine and chlorine containing mixed halogenated dimethyl bipyrroles (HDBPs) were determined using established methods. Subcooled liquid vapour pressures (P(o)(L,25)), aqueous solubilities (S(w,25)), and octanol/water partition coefficients (K(ow)) were determined using the gas chromatography-retention time, generator column, and slow-stirring methods, respectively. Henry's Law constants (H25) were estimated using experimentally-derived P(o)(L) and S(w,25) data. Values of all four properties were generally similar to those reported for other polyhalogenated aromatic compounds [P(o)(L,25) = (7.55-191) x 10(-6) Pa; S(w,25) = (1.0-1.9) x 10(-5) g/l; log K(ow) = 6.4-6.7; H25 = 0.0020-0.14 Pa m3/mol]. The effect of replacing a chlorine with a bromine atom significantly decreased P(o)(L,25) (log P(o)(L,25) = -0.4197 (# bromine atoms) - 2.643, p<0.01) and H25 (log H25 = -0.508 (# bromine atoms) + 0.394, p<0.02). There were no significant effects of bromine/chlorine substitution on S(w,25) or K(ow). A simple Level I equilibrium partitioning model predicted the environmental behaviour of HDBPs to be similar to a tetrabrominated diphenyl ether. Only slight differences in behaviour amongst HDBP congeners were predicted since substitution of a bromine for a chlorine (Cl/Br substitution) atom had less effect than H/Cl or H/Br substitution on P(o)(L,25), S(w,25), H25, and K(ow).  相似文献
