Ambient particulate chemical composition data acquired from samples collected using a three-stage Davis Rotating-drum Universal-size-cut Monitoring (DRUM) impactor in Detroit, MI, between February and April 2002 were analyzed through the application of a three-way factor analysis model. PM2.5 (particulate matter ⩽2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter) was collected by a DRUM impactor with 3-h time resolution and three size modes (2.5 μm>Dp>1.15 μm, 1.15 μm>Dp>0.34 μm and 0.34 μm>Dp>0.1 μm). A novel three-way factor analysis model was applied to these data where the source profiles are a three-way array of size, composition and source while the contributions are a matrix of sample by source. Nine factors were identified: road salt, industrial (Fe+Zn), cloud processed sulfate, two types of metal works, road dust, local sulfate source, sulfur with dust, and homogeneously formed sulfate. Road salt had high concentrations of Na and Cl. Mixed industrial emissions are characterized by Fe and Zn. The cloud processed sulfate had a high concentration of S in the intermediate size mode. The first metal works represented by Fe in all three size modes and by Zn, Ti, Cu, and Mn. The second included a high concentration of small size particle sulfur with intermediate size Fe, Zn, Al, Si, and Ca. Road dust contained Na, Al, Si, S, K, and Fe in the large size mode. The local and homogeneous sulfate factors show high concentrations of S in the smallest size mode, but different time series behavior in their contributions. Sulfur with dust is characterized by S and a mix of Na, Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, Ti, and Fe from the medium and large size modes. This study shows that the utilization of time and size resolved DRUM data can assist in the identification of sources and atmospheric processes leading to the observed ambient concentrations.  相似文献

This study aims to investigate the characteristics, provenance, and particle-related pollution of an intense dustfall event that occurred in Beijing on 16–17 April 2006. Satellite images reveal that the aeolian dust originated in northeastern Alxa League of Inner Mongolia and passed southeastward across northern Ningxia, middle Inner Mongolia, northern Shaanxi, Shanxi, and Hebei provinces. The dust then moved out of continental China in the vicinity of Beijing and Tianjin. The floating dust led to severe air pollution in Huhhot, Datong, and Beijing. We measured dustfall by collecting dust samples, investigated particle morphology, and calculated the mass medium diameter (MMD) of the dustfall using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Major elements and mineral content of the dust particles were determined by electron probe and powder X-ray diffractometer, respectively. The relative abundance of dustfall during this event was 12.5–15.0 g m?2, making up about 10% of the total annual dustfall in Beijing. Dustfall amounted to 205 thousand tons in Beijing, the largest amount observed in recent years. The dust particles were mostly angular, subangular and subrounded in morphology, and the MMD was nearly 12 μm. Particles <10 μm accounted for 54.7% by number, but fine sand particles (larger than 50 μm) made up 53.7% by volume. Particles with diameters larger than 20 μm made up of the predominant volume of the samples (90.35%). Hence, this dustfall event was characterized by a high content of fine sand and coarse silt particles. The principal elements in the dust particles were C, O, Si, Al, Fe, and Ca, whereas the major minerals were quartz, Na-feldspar, calcite, and clay minerals.  相似文献

Italy is frequently affected by Saharan dust intrusions, which result in high PM10 concentrations in the atmosphere and can cause the exceedances of the PM10 daily limits (50 μg m?3) set by the European Union (EU/2008/50). The estimate of African dust contribution to PM10 concentrations is therefore a key issue in air quality assessment and policy formulation. This study presents a first identification of Saharan dust outbreaks as well as an estimate of the African dust contribution to PM10 concentrations during the period 2003–2005 over Italy. The identification of dust events has been carried out by looking at different sources of information such as monitoring network observations, satellite images, ground measurements of aerosol optical properties, dust model simulations and air mass backward trajectory analysis. The contribution of Saharan dust to PM10 monthly concentrations has been estimated at seven Italian locations. The results are both spatially (with station) and temporally (with month and year) variable, as a consequence of the variability of the meteorological conditions. However, excluding the contribution of severe dust events (21st February 2004, 25th–28th September 2003, 23rd–27th March 2005), the monthly contribution of dust varies approximately between 1 μg m?3 and 10 μg m?3 throughout year 2005 and between 1 μg m?3 and 8 μg m?3 throughout year 2003. In 2004 the dust concentration is lower than 2003 and 2005 (<5 μg m?3 at all sites). The reduction in the number of daily exceedances of the limit value (50 μg m?3) after subtraction of the dust contribution is also calculated at each station: it varies with station between 20% and 50% in 2005 and between 5% and 25% in 2003 and 2004.  相似文献

Long-term surface observations indicate that soil dust represents over 30% of the annual fine (particle diameter less than 2.5 μm) particulate mass in many areas of the western US; in spring and summer, it represents an even larger fraction. There are numerous dust-producing playas in the western US, but surface dust aerosol concentrations in this region are also influenced by dust of Asian origin. This study examines the seasonality of surface soil dust concentrations at 15 western US sites using observations from the Interagency Monitoring of PROtected Visual Environments (IMPROVE) network from 2001 to 2004. Average soil concentrations in particulate matter less than 10 μm in diameter (PM10) were lowest in winter and peaked during the summer months at these sites; however, episodic higher-concentration events (>10 μg m−3) occurred in the spring, the time of maximum Asian dust transport to the western US. Simulated surface dust concentrations from the Navy Aerosol Analysis and Prediction System (NAAPS) suggested that long-range transport from Asia dominates surface dust concentrations in the western US in the spring, and that, although some long-range transport does occur throughout the year (1–2 μg m−3), locally generated dust plays a larger role in the region in summer and fall. However, NAAPS simulated some anomalously high concentrations (>50 μg m−3) of local dust in the fall and winter months over portions of the western US. Differences between modeled and observed dust concentrations were attributed to overestimation of total observed soil dust concentrations by the assumptions used to convert IMPROVE measurements into PM10 soil concentrations, lack of inhibition of model dust production in snow-covered regions, and lack of seasonal agricultural sources in the model.  相似文献

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) was sampled at 5 Spanish locations during the European Community Respiratory Health Survey II (ECRHS II). In an attempt to identify and quantify PM2.5 sources, source contribution analysis by principal component analysis (PCA) was performed on five datasets containing elemental composition of PM2.5 analysed by ED-XRF. A total of 4–5 factors were identified at each site, three of them being common to all sites (interpreted as traffic, mineral and secondary aerosols) whereas industrial sources were site-specific. Sea-salt was identified as independent source at all coastal locations except for Barcelona (where it was clustered with secondary aerosols). Despite their typically dominant coarse grain-size distribution, mineral and marine aerosols were clearly observed in PM2.5. Multi-linear regression analysis (MLRA) was applied to the data, showing that traffic was the main source of PM2.5 at the five sites (39–53% of PM2.5, 5.1–12.0 μg m−3), while regional-scale secondary aerosols accounted for 14–34% of PM2.5 (2.6–4.5 μg m−3), mineral matter for 13–31% (2.4–4.6 μg m−3) and sea-salt made up 3–7% of the PM2.5 mass (0.4–1.3 μg m−3). Consequently, despite regional and climatic variability throughout Spain, the same four main PM2.5 emission sources were identified at all the study sites and the differences between the relative contributions of each of these sources varied at most 20%. This would corroborate PM2.5 as a useful parameter for health studies and environmental policy-making, owing to the fact that it is not as subject to the influence of micro-sitting as other parameters such as PM10. African dust inputs were observed in the mineral source, adding on average 4–11 μg m−3 to the PM2.5 daily mean during dust outbreaks. On average, levels of Al, Si, Ti and Fe during African episodes were higher by a factor of 2–8 with respect to non-African days, whereas levels of local pollutants (absorption coefficient, S, Pb, Cl) showed smaller variations (factor of 0.5–2).  相似文献

Recent research interest has been focused on road dust resuspension as one of the major sources of atmospheric particulate matter in an urban environment. Given the dearth of studies on the variability of the PM10 fraction of road deposited sediments, our understanding of the main factors controlling this pollutant is incomplete. In the present study a new sampling methodology was devised and applied to collect PM10 deposited mass from 1 m2 of road pavement. PM10 road dust fraction was sampled directly from active traffic lanes at 23 sampling sites during a campaign in Barcelona (Spain) in June 2007. The aim of the study was to gain more insight into the variability of mass and chemistry of road dust in different urban environments, such as the city centre, ring roads, and locations nearby demolition/construction sites. The city centre showed values of PM10 road dust within a range of 3–23 mg m?2, whereas levels reached 24–80 mg m?2 in locations affected by transport of uncovered heavy trucks. The largest dust loads were measured in the proximity of demolition/construction sites and the harbor entry with values up to 328 mg m?2.The city centre road dust profiles (%) were enriched in OC, EC, Fe, S, Cu, Zn, Mn, Cr, Sb, Sn, Mo, Zr, Hf, Ge, Ba, Pb, Bi, SO42?, NO3?, Cl? and NH4+, but several crustal components such as Ca, Ti, Na, and Mg were also considerably concentrated. Locations affected by construction and demolition activities had high levels of crustal components such as Ca, Li, Sc, Sr, Rb and also As whereas ring roads, characterized by a higher load of uncovered heavy trucks showed an intermediate composition.Levels of PM10 components per area were also evaluated to quantify the resuspendable amount of each element from 1 m2. In the inner city environment mean values of 1363 μg Ca m?2, 816 μg OC m?2, 239 μg EC m?2, 13 μg Cu m?2, 12 μg Zn m?2, 1.9 μg Sb m?2 and 2.0 μg Pb m?2, in PM10 in all cases, were registered. Moreover the deposited PM load at demolition/construction sites acts as a reservoir or trap for traffic-related particles, which gives rise to large amounts of hazardous pollutants, available for resuspension.  相似文献

To better understand the current physical and chemical properties of East Asian aerosols, an intensive observation of atmospheric particles was conducted at Gosan site, Jeju Island, South Korea during 2005 spring. Total suspended particle (TSP) samples were collected using pre-combusted quartz filters and a high-volume air sampler with the time intervals ranging from 3 h to 48 h. The kinds and amount of various organic compounds were measured in the samples using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Among the 99 target compounds detected, saccharides (average, 130 ± 14 ng m?3), fatty acids (73 ± 7 ng m?3), alcohols (41 ± 4 ng m?3), n-alkanes (32 ± 3 ng m?3), and phthalates (21 ± 2 ng m?3) were found to be major compound classes with polyols/polyacids, lignin and resin products, PAHs, sterols and aromatic acids being minor. Compared to the previous results reported for 2001 late spring samples, no significant changes were found in the levels of their concentrations and compositions for 4 years, although the economy in East Asia, especially in China, has sharply expanded from 2001 to 2005. During the campaign at Gosan site, we encountered two distinct dust storm episodes with high TSP concentrations. The first dust event occurred on March 28, which was characterized by a predominance of secondary organic aerosols. The second event that occurred on the next day (March 29) was found to be characterized by primary organic aerosols associated with forest fires in Siberia/northeastern China. A significant variation in the molecular compositions, which was found within a day, suggests that the compositions of East Asian aerosols are heterogeneous due to multi-contributions from different source regions together with different pathways of long-range atmospheric transport of particles.  相似文献

During the course of one year (March 2004–March 2005), PM2.5 particulate nitrate concentrations were semi-continuously measured every 10 min at a Madrid suburban site using the Rupprecht and Patashnick Series 8400N Ambient Particulate Nitrate Monitor (8400N). Gaseous pollutants (NO, NO2, O3, HCHO, HNO2) were simultaneously measured with a DOAS spectrometer (OPSIS AR-500) and complementary meteorological information was obtained by a permanent tower. The particulate nitrate concentrations ranged from the instrumental detection limit of around 0.2 μg m−3, up to a maximum of about 25 μg m−3. The minimum monthly average was reached during August (0.32 μg m−3) and the maximum during November (3.0 μg m−3). Due to the semi-volatile nature of ammonium nitrate, peaks were hardly present during summer air pollution episodes. A typical pattern during days with low dispersive conditions was characterized by a steep rise of particulate nitrate in the morning, reaching maximum values between 9 and 14 UTC, followed by a decrease during the evening. On some occasions a light increase was observed at nighttime. During spring episodes, brief diurnal nitrate peaks were recorded, while during the autumn and winter episodes, later and broader nitrate peaks were registered. Analysis of particulate nitrate and related gaseous species indicated the photo-chemical origin of the morning maxima, delayed with respect to NO and closely associated with secondary NO2 maximum values. The reverse evolution of nitrate and nitrous acid was observed after sunrise, suggesting a major contribution from HNO2 photolysis to OH formation at this time of the day, which would rapidly produce nitrate in both gaseous and particulate phase. Some nocturnal nitrate maxima appeared under high humidity conditions, and a discussion about their origin involving different possible mechanisms is presented, i.e. the possibility that these nocturnal maximum values could be related to the heterogeneous formation of nitrous and nitric acid by the hydrolysis of NO2 on wet aerosols.  相似文献

A radiation fog physics, gas- and aqueous-phase chemistry model is evaluated against measurements in three sites in the San Joaquin Valley of California (SJV) during the winter of 1995. The measurements include for the first time vertically resolved fog chemical composition measurements. Overall the model is successful in reproducing the fog dynamics as well as the temporal and spatial variability of the fog composition (pH, sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium concentrations) in the area. Sulfate production in the fog layer is relatively slow (1–4 μg m−3 per fog episode) compared to the episodes in the early 1980s because of the low SO2 concentrations in the area and the lack of oxidants inside the fog layer. Sulfate production inside the fog layer is limited by the availability of oxidants in the urban areas of the valley and by SO2 in the more remote areas. Nitrate is produced in the rural areas of the valley by the heterogeneous reaction of N2O5 on fog droplets, but this reaction is of secondary importance for the more polluted urban areas. The gas-phase production of HNO3 during the daytime is sufficient to balance the nitrate removed during the nighttime fog episodes. Entrainment of air from the layer above the fog provides another source of reactants for the fog layer. Wet removal is one of most important processes inside the fog layer in SJV. We estimate based on the three episodes investigated during IMS95 that a typical fog episode removes 500–2000 μg m−2 of sulfate, 2500–6500 μg m−2 of nitrate, and 2000–3500 μg m−2 of ammonium. For the winter SJV valley the net fog effect corresponds to reductions in ground ambient concentrations of 0.05–0.2 μg m−3 for sulfate, 3–6 μg m−3 for total nitrate, and 1–3 μg m−3 for total ammonium.  相似文献

The assessment of the wind blown dust emission for Europe and selected regions of North Africa and Southwest Asia was carried out using a mesoscale model. The mesoscale model was parameterized based on the current literature review. The model provides data on PM10 emission from several dust reservoirs (anthropogenic, agriculture, semi- and natural) with spatial resolution of 10 × 10 km and temporal resolution of 1 h. The spatial variability of PM10 emission depends on soil texture, land cover/land use as well as meteorological conditions. Lands covered with water or permanently wet were excluded from the model. The land covered with vegetation is treated as dust reservoir whose dust emission capacity depends on the type of vegetation and cover. The dust reservoirs are divided into reservoirs with stable and unstable surface. The changes of emission in time depend on meteorological parameters. The wind blown dust emission should be treated as a non-continuous spatio-temporal process. The emissions are estimated with high uncertainty. The estimated PM10 yearly total load emitted by wind from the European territory is highly differentiated in space and time and is equal to 0.74 Tg. The total load of PM10 emitted by wind from North African and Southwest Asian land surface located in the vicinity of European boundaries is assessed as nearly 50% (0.43 Tg) of the total load estimated for the whole Europe. The average yearly PM10 emission factor for Europe was estimated at 0.139 Mg km?2.The PM10 emission from agricultural areas is estimated at 52% of the total wind blown emission from the domain of the European Union project “Improving and applying methods for the calculation of natural and biogenic emissions and assessment of impacts to the air quality” - NatAir.PM10 emission factor for natural areas of Europe is estimated at 0.021 Mg km?2. Appropriate factors for agricultural areas and anthropogenic areas are 0.157 Mg km?2 and 0.118 Mg km?2, respectively. The latter two factors are probably underestimated due to omitting in the model of other dust emission mechanisms than aeolian erosion.  相似文献

This paper evaluates the role of Saharan dust advection in the exceeding of the PM10 thresholds in the city of Rome, Italy. To this purpose, a series of observations and model forecasts recorded in the year 2001 are analysed and discussed. Lidar profiles collected over 168 days of the year are employed to both assess the presence and magnitude of Saharan dust layers over the city and to evaluate the depth of the planetary boundary layer. Backtrajectories are used to verify the Saharan origin of the lidar-sounded air masses. Model predictions of the presence of Saharan dust over the area are employed to fill the time gaps between lidar observations. PM10 and carbon monoxide records of both a city background (Villa Ada) and a heavy traffic station (Magna Grecia) are cross-analysed with the dust events record and meteorological data. The analysis shows that: (1) Saharan dust was advected over Rome on about 30% of the days of 2001; (2) mean contribution of Saharan dust transport events to daily PM10 levels was of the order of 20 μg m−3; (3) at the urban background station of Villa Ada, the Saharan contribution caused the surpassing of the maximum number of days in excess of 50 μg m−3 fixed by the current legislation (35 per year). Conversely, at the heavy traffic station of Magna Grecia the Saharan contribution was not determinant at causing the observed large exceeding of that limit, as well as of the maximum yearly average of 40 μg m−3; (4) 25% of the Saharan advection days (of the order of 100/year at Rome) led to a PM10 increase >30 μg m−3, 4% caused an increase >50 μg m−3, thus leading on their own to surpassing the 50 μg m−3 daily limit.  相似文献

Measurements of the physical properties of particles in the atmosphere of a UK urban area have been made, including particle number count by condensation nucleus counters with different lower particle size cut-offs; particle size distributions using a Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer; total particle Fuchs surface area using an epiphaniometer and particle mass using Tapered Element Oscillating Micro-balance (TEOM) instruments with size selective (PM10 and PM2.5) inlets. Mean particle number counts at three sites range from 2.86×104 to 9.60×104 cm-3. A traffic-influenced location showed a substantially higher ratio of particle number to PM10 mass than a nearby background location despite being some 70 m from the roadway. Operating two condensation nucleus counters in tandem to determine particles in the 3–7 nm size range by difference showed signficant numbers of particles in this range, apparently related to homogeneous nucleation processes. Measurements with the Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer showed a clear difference between roadside size distributions and those at a nearby background location with an additional mode in the roadside samples below 10 nm diameter. Particle number counts were found to show a significant linear correlation with PM10 mass (r2=0.44; n=44 for 24 h data at an urban background location), although during one period of high pollution a curvilinear relationship was found. Measurements of the diurnal variation in PM10 mass, particle number count and Fuchs surface area show the same general pattern of behaviour of the three variables, explicable in terms of vehicle emission source strength and atmospheric dispersion, although the surface area growth was out of phase with the particle number and mass. It appears that particle number gives the clearest indication of recent road traffic emissions.  相似文献

This study was aimed at investigating the relative abundance of heavy metals in cement dust from different cement dust factories in order to predict their possible roles in the severity of cement dust toxicity. The concentrations of total mercury (Hg), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), iron (Fe) and chromium (VI) (Cr (VI)) levels in cement dust and clinker samples from Nigeria and cement dust sample from the United States of America (USA) were determined using graphite furnace atomic absorption (GFAAS), while Zn and Ca were measured by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (FAAS), and Cr (VI) by colorimetric method. Total Cu, Ni and Mn were significantly higher in cement dust sample from USA (p < 0.05), also, both total Cr and Cr (VI) were 5.4–26 folds higher in USA cement dust compared with Nigeria cement dust or clinker (p < 0.001). Total Cd was higher in both Nigeria cement dust and clinker (p < 0.05 and p < 0.001), respectively. Mercury was more in both Nigeria cement dust and clinker (p < 0.05), while Pb was only significantly higher in clinker from Nigeria (p < 0.001). These results show that cement dust contain mixture of metals that are known human carcinogens and also have been implicated in other debilitating health conditions. Additionally, it revealed that metal content concentrations are factory dependent. This study appears to indicate the need for additional human studies relating the toxicity of these metals and their health impacts on cement factory workers.  相似文献

There are a number of difficulties associated with the quantitative analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in atmospheric particles. Therefore, majority of the previous studies on VOCs associated with particles have been qualitative. Air samples were collected in Izmir, Turkey to determine ambient particle and gas phase concentrations of several aromatic, oxygenated and halogenated VOCs. Samples were quantitatively analyzed using thermal desorption–gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Gas-phase concentrations ranged between 0.02 (bromoform) and 4.65 μg m−3 (toluene) and were similar to those previously measured at the same site. Particle-phase concentrations ranged from 1 (1,3-dichlorobenzene) to 933 pg m−3 (butanol). VOCs were mostly found in gas-phase (99.9±0.25%). However, the particulate VOCs had comparable concentrations to those reported previously for semivolatile organic compounds. The distribution of particle-phase VOCs between fine (dp<2.5 μm) and coarse (2.5 μm<dp<10 μm) fractions was also investigated. It was found that VOCs were mostly associated with fine particles.  相似文献

As part of the BRACE 2002 May field intensive, the NOAA Twin Otter flew 21 missions over terrestrial, marine, and mixed terrestrial and marine sites in the greater Tampa, Florida, airshed including over Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Aerosols were collected with filter packs and their inorganic fractions analyzed post hoc with ion chromatography. Anion mass dominated both the fine- (particle diameters ⩽2.5 μm) and coarse-mode (particle diameters 10.0–2.5 μm) inorganic fractions: SO42−in the fine fraction, 3.7 μg m−3 on average and Cl and NO3 in the coarse fraction, 0.6 μg m−3 on average and 1.4 μg m−3 on average, respectively. Ammonium ion dominated the inorganic fine-mode cation mass, averaging 1.2 μg m−3, presumably in association with SO42. Coarse-mode cation mass was dominated by Na+, but the concentrations of Ca2+ and K+ together often equaled or exceeded the Na+ mass which was, on average, 0.6 μg m−3. Nitrate appeared predominantly in the coarse rather than the fine fraction, as expected, and the fine fraction never contributed >15% of the total NO3 concentration. Nitric acid dominated the NO3 contribution from both aerosol size fractions, and constituted at least 45% of the total NO3 in all samples. Coarse-mode Cl depletion, and hence NO3 replacement, reached 100% within the first 4 h of plume travel from the urban core in some samples, although it was most often less than 100% and slightly below the expected 1:1 ratio with coarse-mode NO3 concentration: the slope of the regression line of NO3 concentration to Cl depletion was 0.9 in the coarse fraction. In addition, terrestrial samples were markedly lower in Cl depletion, and thus in substituted NO3, than were marine and mixed samples: 15–25% depletion in terrestrial samples vs. 50–65% in marine samples with the same air mass age. Thus, we conclude that NO3 and its progenitor compound HNO3 were present in the Tampa airshed in insufficient amounts to titrate fully the slightly alkaline coarse-mode particles there, and to replace completely the Cl from the coarse-mode NaCl.  相似文献

The influence of two intensive low-altitude atmospheric-dust intrusions on the activity levels of 137Cs and 40K as well as atmospheric particle matter (PM10) concentrations in the lower atmosphere of the Canary Islands are analysed here. These two events took place at the beginning of January 2002 and March 2004, respectively. 3D atmospheric back-trajectories indicated that the main source of dust material involved in the considered atmospheric intrusions came from NW Africa. A consequence of these dust intrusions was the major increase of PM10 concentrations in the lower atmosphere. Both episodes were characterised by having weekly averages of PM10 concentration surpassing 150 μg m−3, higher than the daily PM10 limit value established by the EC/1999/30 directive for PM10 from 2005. Similarly, during these two events, both 137Cs and 40K activities increased by a factor of 6 and 13 as well as 13 and 14, respectively, over the basal values calculated for each radionuclide and time period (0.59±0.02 and 0.88±0.07 μBq m−3 as well as 12±6 and 24±8 μBq m−3).  相似文献

Most foods from plant origin usually contain 1–10 mg/kg (dry weight) of non-resolved isomeric alkanes in the range of the n-alkanes C20–C50 which are assumed to be residues from mineral oil products (in addition to the natural paraffins). In edible vegetable oils, concentrations may exceed 100 mg/kg. Since it was suspected that this contamination was mostly of environmental origin, particulate matter from air was analysed for the same range of paraffins. In a road tunnel, around 5 μg/m3 of such paraffins were found, corresponding to about 3% of the fine dust (PM10). The composition corresponded to that found in the particulate matter from the exhaust of diesel engines, which in turn largely corresponded to engine (lubricating) oil. In Swiss cities, the C20–C50 mineral paraffins in the PM10 from ambient air amounted to 0.1–1.5 μg/m3 (about 1% of the dust) and seemed to primarily originate from incomplete combustion of heating and diesel oil, lubricating oil, and road tar debris. On the countryside, the concentrations were around 0.03 μg/m3 (0.3% of the dust). Soil contained 0.5–10 mg/kg of these paraffins. The similarity of the molecular weight (volatility) distribution suggests that the food contamination with paraffins, is mostly from the air. A substantial proportion probably consists of lubricating oil. If this hypothesis is confirmed, measures should be investigated to reduce this contamination.  相似文献

The relationship between suspended particulate matter (SPM) and fungal spore was investigated in Seosan, a rural county along the west coast of Korea, in the spring of 2000. SPM concentrations in the air were 199.8 μg m−3 in the first Asian dust period (23–24 March), 249.4 μg m−3 in the second Asian dust period (7–9 April) and 98.9 μg m−3 in the non-Asian dust period (12–16 May), respectively. The majority of the total SPM were composed of coarse particles sized about 5 μm during the two Asian dust periods. Four molds genera grown from airborne fungal spores were identified in colonies grown from SPM samples taken during the Asian dust periods. All the genera found, Fusarium, Aspergillus, Penicillium and Basipetospora, are hyphomycetes in the division Deuteromycota. Morphologically, more diversified mycelia of hyphomycetes were grown on the sample captured from 1.1 to 2.1 μm sized SPM than on the other sized samples gathered in the dust periods. On the other hand, no mold was observed on the sample of 1.1–2.1 μm sized SPM in the non-Asian dust period. From these results, it seems evident that several sorts of fine sized fungal spores were suspended in the atmospheric environment of this study area during Asian dust periods.  相似文献

Despite their burden in urban particulate air pollution, road traffic non-exhaust emissions are often uncontrolled and information about the effectiveness of mitigation measures on paved roads is still scarce. The present study is aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of mechanical sweeping/water flushing treatments in mitigating urban road dust resuspension and to quantify the real benefit in terms of ambient PM10 concentrations. To this aim a specific campaign was carried out in a heavily trafficked central road of Barcelona (Spain), a Mediterranean city suffering from a traffic-related pollution, both for a high car density and a frequent lack of precipitation. Several street washings were performed by means of mechanical sweepers and pressure water during night in all traffic lanes and sidewalks. PM10 levels were simultaneously compared with four reference urban background air quality stations to interpret any meteorological variability. At the downwind measurement site, PM10 concentrations registered a mean daily decrease of 8.8 μg m?3 during the 24 h after street washing treatments. However 3.7–4.9 μg m?3 of such decrease were due to the meteorological variability detected at the upwind site, as well as at two of the reference sites. This reveals that an effective decrease of 4–5 μg m?3 (7–10%) can be related to street washing efficiency. Mitigation of road dust resuspension was confirmed by investigating the chemical composition of airborne-PM10 filters. Concentrations of Cu, Sb, Fe and mineral matter decrease significantly with respect to concentrations of elemental carbon, used as tracer for exhaust diesel emissions. High efficiency of street washing in reducing road dust loads was found by performing periodic samplings both on the treated and the untreated areas.  相似文献

Atmospheric Aluminum measured in northern Taiwan from 2003 to 2006 is used as a dust tracer, from which dust concentrations are derived, and major Asian dust events are determined. The source locations for the major dust events are traced back and identified, and the processes leading to the southeastward transport of Asian dust is investigated. The derived dust concentrations are compared to the local PM10 (particle with size less than 10 μm) concentrations, and the impacts of Asian dust on the air quality of Taiwan are quantified.According to the backward trajectory and dust observation analyses, most of the southeastward transport of major Asian dust events originate from Mongolia and Inner Mongolia in northern China, and only one out of 16 events is generated from western China. Modeling studies and weather analyses of dust events suggest that the southeastward transport of Asian dust is usually generated behind a surface front and transported downwind behind the associated upper level trough. The associated upper level trough is usually deep, in which the northwesterly wind behind the trough favors the southeastward transport of dust to lower latitudes. Dust transported to Taipei generally occur during periods of large-scale subsidence.Asian dust contributes about 15 μg m?3 of aerosol particles to northern Taiwan during winter monsoon, which accounts for about 24–30% of the PM10 concentrations to the northern Taiwan. The contributions of Asian dust are raised pronouncedly to about 60–70% during major dust events. The impacts of Asian dust on Taiwan's air quality are most substantial in December. The Asian dust impacts decrease in other months, but still remain at around 30% in the late winter to early spring.  相似文献
