The microphytoplankton assemblages were studied from water samples collected at eight discrete depths in the top 120 m at five central (open ocean) and four western (shelf/slope region) locations in the Bay of Bengal. The Bay is a low-productive warm pool regime with poor inorganic nutrient inputs to its intensely stratified surface layer despite the very large riverine influx. In addition, the prolonged cloud cover has an adverse effect on the top 25–40 m, on primary production, chlorophyll concentration and phytoplankton assemblages. Microphytoplankton were the most abundant in the northern area of the Bay. A total of 153 phytoplankton species were identified during this study. The most abundant species (at least 1,800 individual cells belonging to a given species or ≥2% of the total counts of identified specimens) during this study were: Thalassiothrix longissima, Thalassiothrix fauenfeldii, Rhizosolenia styliformis, Nitzschia angularis, Thalassionema nitzschioides, Coscinodiscus radiatus, Chaetoceros eibenii, Skeletonema costatum, Coscinodiscus concinnus and Chaetoceros coarctatus. Similarly, there were 20 moderately abundant (≥0.5 but <2%) species. Thirty-three of the least abundant species (<0.5%) occurred at one station. Diatom species, T. fauenfeldii and T. longissima were ubiquitous in the study area. The exclusive occurrence of S. costatum in the northernmost stations suggests that it proliferates only in the low-salinity regions with adequate silica from the land inputs. Abundance of pennate diatoms was higher in the open Bay compared to that of centric diatoms in the more productive northern locations and the western Bay. There appears to be a basic difference between near shore flora and offshore flora. This first analysis of phytoplankton assemblages from the offshore Bay suggests that while there is predominance of only a few species, the Bay harbors very diverse diatom communities that seem to be syntrophic, non-competitive and co-habiting in the generally low nutrient, stratified surface waters.  相似文献

Molluscan assemblages were studied on fringing reefs (reef flats, Millepora-fringing reefs, fringing reefs with massive corals) and fore-reef hard substrata (coral patches, coral carpets and small patch reefs) in the Gulf of Aqaba at water depths ranging from the intertidal to 26 m. A total of 1,665 molluscan individuals from 51 taxa was counted on 44 transects, which covered 220 m2 at eight diving sites. The most important molluscs in the assemblage were the parasitic gastropod Coralliophila neritoidea, the encrusting gastropod Dendropoma maxima and the coral-associated bivalve Pedum spondyloideum. The dead assemblage, in contrast, was dominated by encrusting bivalves (Ostreoidea, Chamoidea, Spondylidae) and the coral-predating gastropod Drupella cornus. Distinct molluscan assemblages inhabit each of the three fringing reef-habitats and most of the important depth-related community changes occurred within the uppermost 5 m. In contrast, the three deeper fore-reef habitats are characterized by a more uniform molluscan composition. Molluscan assemblages were more dependent on substrata and their coral associations than on water depth. Comparisons with other published studies indicate that reefoidal hard substrata in the northern Red Sea are largely characterized by similar species-abundance patterns. The minor differences to other Red Sea studies probably reflect the northern, isolated position of the Gulf of Aqaba, the lack of certain molluscan habitats, and the differential impact of anthropogenic influences. Strong differences between living and dead assemblages in Aqaba are similar to those observed in other regions and are due to distinct biases in the dead assemblage. Molluscs closely associated with living corals (mostly bivalves and Dendropoma) can easily be overgrown after death and are thus undetectable in visual censuses. Some gastropod taxa are preferentially transported into surrounding soft-substrata postmortem or redistributed by hermit crabs. Such complex relationships between ecology and taphonomy are crucial in evaluating the quality of the molluscan fossil record in coral reef environments. The comparison of our results with literature data documents an increase in coral predators during the last two decades in the northern Red Sea. Due to the greater mollusc biodiversity in the shallower Aqaba reef habitats, damage to this coral reef zone would have the greatest impact on the overall mollusc community.  相似文献

Structural investigations on the mucus from six species of coral   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The chemical composition of the mucus from three hard corals (Acropora formosa, Pachyseris speciosa and Fungia fungites) and three soft corals (Sarcophyton sp., Lemnalia sp., and Cespitularia sp.) collected on the Great Barrier Reef (1982–1985) was determined. Significant variation exists in the composition and structure of the six mucus samples, indicating the absence of a common structure for coral mucus. In all cases protein and/or carbohydrate polymers are the major components of the mucus, and lipids are present only in small amounts. The glycose composition varied between species, with fucose (F. fungites and Lemnalia sp.), arabinose (A. formosa), galactose (P. speciosa) and N-acetyl glucosamine (Sarcophyton sp.) being present in high concentrations. With the exception of Sarcophyton sp. and Lemnalia sp., all mucus samples were acidic and contained significant sulphate but no uronic or sialic acids. The amino acid composition of the mucus samples was not unusual, apart from A. formosa, which contained a high percentage of serine and threonine, and F. fungites, which had high levels of glutamic acid present.  相似文献

The pathways of cadmium (Cd) uptake and transfer within an estuarine planktonic community from the Patuxent River, Maryland, USA, were investigated using an assemblage of natural phytoplankton and the copepod Eurytemora affinis Poppe. The experiment was carried out in October 1992 in replicated 500-liter, flow-through, fiberglass tanks. Growth rate, species composition, and Cd loading affected the accumulation of Cd by the phytoplankton. Uptake of Cd by phytoplankton was proportional to the amount of Cd available in the water column. Partition coefficients (K d) for phytoplankton uptake averaged 4.4 × 104. As metal loading rates and phytoplankton species composition changed during the 12-d experiment, Cd partitioning declined. Transfer of Cd to E. affinis occurred from Cd-laden phytoplankton, with levels in the copepods being approximately the same as, or somewhat less, than in the phytoplankton. Some Cd uptake occurred in copepods exposed to dissolved Cd only; however, the uptake was considerably less than that seen from food. Thus, Cd content of higher trophic levels, such as copepods, can be affected by the degree of Cd incorporation in their food source, and by ecological factors regulating phytoplankton ingestion. The importance of Euphausia pacifica Hansen to the demersal fish community off Sendai Bay, northern Japan, was studied based on a total of 256 trawl samples collected during May, October and November, from 1989 to 1992. The samples were classified into 16 assemblages according to year, month and depth. The importance of E. pacifica to the total diet of each of the assemblages was measured using an index considering both fish diet and species composition. A total of 24 fish species out of 87 were found to ingest E. pacifica. Of these, Gadus macrocephaus and Theragra chalcogramma had the highest predation impact due to their dominance in the fish assemblages and the high proportion of E. pacifica in their diets. The contribution of E. pacifica to the total diet of the fish assemblage was highest in the shallow (≤300 m) regions during May, accounting for an average of 38.5% for the 4 years. However, during May 1990, when the warm Kuroshio Extension prevailed, the contribution was higher in the deep (>300 m; 22.6%) region, reflecting active and/or passive movements of E. pacifica. The average predation impact was maximal in the May/shallow assemblage (mean ± SE; 4.6 ± 1.4 kg wet wt km2 d−1) and was minimal in the November/shallow assemblage (0.4 ± 0.3). Annual estimates of consumption by demersal fish fishes ranged from 43 to 128 metric tons, representing 15 to 64% of the annual commercial catch of E. pacifica by local fisheries. It is therefore suggested that the fisheries on E. pacifica have the potential to considerably impact the demersal fish assemblages. Received: 3 December 1997 / Accepted: 10 June 1998  相似文献

The endofaunal assemblages associated with two species of sponge from the family Chalinidae (Haliclona sp. 1 and Haliclona sp. 2) were studied at four locations along the south west coast of Australia. The species have distinct morphologies and inhabit similar microhabitats; there is also considerable scientific interest in Haliclona sp. 1 (green Haliclona) due to the unique bioactive compound it produces. A total of 948 and 287 endofaunal individuals were found associated with 16 specimens of both the green Haliclona and Haliclona sp. 2 (brown Haliclona), respectively. Twenty-four endofaunal taxa were found (from mysid shrimps to teleost fish), with the brown Haliclona having a greater density of endofaunal species and individuals than the green Haliclona. The endofaunal assemblages of both species of sponge were significantly different, but only the endofaunal assemblage within the green Haliclona differed significantly among locations. Differences in the abundance and biomass of associated endofauna of each species of sponge can be related to differences in their morphologies, size and internal structure. In the green Haliclona, differences in endofaunal assemblages among locations are unlikely to be due to environmental influences as taxa discriminating each locations assemblage were common to both species of sponge. Numerous endofaunal individuals were found to be reproductively active, and it is clear that the species of sponge provide important habitats for their associated endofauna. This provision of habitat needs to be taken into account when harvesting green Haliclona biomass for supply of its target bioactive compound for further pharmaceutical development.  相似文献

The effects of local-scale anthropogenic disturbance from active drilling platforms on epibenthic megafaunal abundance, diversity and assemblage pattern were examined in two west of Shetland hydrocarbon fields at 420 and 508 m water depth. These areas were selected to include a range of disturbance regimes and contrasting faunal assemblages associated with different temperature regimes. Remotely operated vehicle (ROV) video provided high-resolution megafaunal abundance and diversity data, which were related to the extent of visible disturbance from drilling spoil. These data, in conjunction with a study deeper in the Faroe-Shetland Channel, have allowed comparison of the effects of disturbance on megabenthos across a range of sites. Disturbance to megafaunal assemblages was found to be high within 50 m of the source of drill spoil and in areas where spoil was clearly visible on the seabed, with depressed abundances (Foinaven 1,900 individuals ha−1; Schiehallion 2,178 individuals ha−1) and diversity (H′ = 1.75 Foinaven; 1.12 Schiehallion) as a result of smothering effects. These effects extended to around 100 m from the source of disturbance, although this was variable, particularly with current regime and nature of drilling activity. Further from the source of disturbance, megafaunal assemblages became more typical of the background area with increased diversity (H′ = 2.02 Foinaven; 1.77 Schiehallion) and abundance (Foinaven 16,484 individuals ha−1; Schiehallion 5,477 individuals ha−1). Visible effects on megafaunal assemblages as a result of seabed drilling were limited in extent although assemblage responses were complex, being controlled by differing effects to individual species often based on their motility.  相似文献

Growth rates of summer (June–September) phytoplankton assemblages and constituent species were measured in 30 diffusion culture experiments. Size-fractionated (<10 m) phytoplankton assemblages were incubated in situ or under simulated in-situ conditions in outdoor tanks connected to a running seawater system. Doubling rates of important species and groups (such as microflagellates) were compared to community biomass doubling rates estimated from 14C uptake and changes in chlorophyll a concentrations. Division rates of dominant diatom species generally equalled or exceeded community biomass doubling rates, while those of flagellates and non-motile ultraplankters were slower. Maximum division rates of sixteen common diatom species exceeded 2.1 divisions d-1, while nine had maximum division rates in excess of 3 d-1. Mean division rates of 12 diatom species exceeded 1 d-1. Maximum division rates of flagellated species, uncharacterized microflagellates and non-motile ultraplankton assemblages were 2.1, 1.5 and 1.4 d-1, respectively. Microflagellate and non-motile ultraplankton assemblage doubling rates were less than 0.5 d-1 in over half of all growth experiments.  相似文献

We sampled the communities of decapod crustaceans inhabiting the depth zone between 3 and 871 m off the Catalan coast (North-West Mediterranean) from June 1981 to June 1983. The 185 samples comprised 90 species differing widely in their depth distributions. Multivariate analysis revealed four distinct faunistic assemblages, (1) littoral communities over sandy bottoms, (2) shelf communities over terrigenous muds, (3) upper-slope communitics, and (4) lower-slope or bathyal communities. The brachyuran crab Liocarcinus depurator is the most abundant species of the shelf assemblage, although L. vernalis dominates over the shallow sandy bottoms of the shelf. The dominant species of the upper-slope assemblage are nektobenthic species (Solenocera membranacea, Plesionika heterocarpus, Processa canaliculata), pelagic species (Pasiphaea sivado, Sergestes arcticus), and benthic species (Macropipus tuberculatus, Munida intermedia, Nephrops norvegicus). Aristeus antennatus comprise most of the biomass of the lower-slope community, which supports a greater diversity than the other assemblages. The main assemblages appear to be related to different hydrological characteristics, the extent of seasonal fluctuations, and to the changes in sediment structure associated with changes in the steepness of the bottom.  相似文献

Epizoic worms were found to occur on certain coral colonies from reefs off the coast of Eilat (Red Sea). We identified 14 coral species infested by acoelomorph worms at a depth range of 2–50 m. The host corals were all zooxanthellate and included both massive and branching stony corals and a soft coral. Worms from all hosts were identified as belonging to the genus Waminoa and contained two distinct algal symbionts differing in size. The smaller one was identified as Symbiodinium sp. and the larger one is presumed to belong to the genus Amphidinium. Worm-infested colonies of the soft coral, Stereonephthya cundabiluensis, lacked a mucus layer and exhibited distinct cell microvilli, a phenotype not present in colonies lacking Waminoa sp. In most cases, both cnidarian and Acoelomorph hosts displayed high specificity for genetically distinctive Symbiodinium spp. These observations show that the epizoic worms do not acquire their symbionts from the “host” coral.  相似文献

The surface abundance and species composition of phytoplankton communities were studied in a section across the continental shelf between the Río de La Plata and the oceanic waters of the Subtropical Convergence, during late spring (November 1999). Algal communities were examined using light microscopy and HPLC-derived (high-performance liquid chromatography) pigment concentrations. The CHEMTAX program was used to estimate the chlorophyll a (chl a) biomass of different algal classes. The inclusion of the most abundant members of the chl c pigment family (chl c1, chl c2, chl c3 and chl c2 monogalactosyldiacylglyceride esters) in the pigment matrix improved the CHEMTAX interpretation of field data. Using this novel approach four haptophyte populations were distinguished across the studied section, even though they had qualitatively similar pigment signatures, although one subtype lacked 19-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin (Hex-Fuco). Five different phytoplankton assemblages, spatially segregated by the prevailing environmental conditions, were distinguished during the studied period. All of them showed a complex community structure, formed by a background of small-sized cells such as cyanobacteria, cryptophytes, haptophytes and prasinophyceans, on which diatom, cryptophyte or some haptophyte blooms were overlapped. In the estuarine assemblage, where maximum chl a concentrations where found, diatoms were always the dominant group (30–60% of total chl a), but cryptophytes (10–40%), prasinophyceans (2–20%) and dinoflagellates (2–12%) were also relevant. In the coastal assemblage diatoms were also the dominant group (35–45%), but haptophytes lacking Hex-Fuco were subdominant (20–35%). The continental shelf assemblage showed an almost exclusive dominance (90%) of haptophytes resembling the coccolithophorid E. huxleyi. Another haptophyte (Phaeocystis sp.) was dominant (75–85%) in the Malvinas Current assemblage. The Brazil Current assemblage was characterized by the codominance of cyanobacteria (45%) and haptophytes (35%). These results are discussed in relationship to the complex hydrographic features of the area.Communicated by O. Kinne, Oldendorf/Luhe  相似文献

Loss of zooxanthellae (dinoflagellate Symbiodinium) from corals will sometimes lead to mass mortality of corals. To detect and quantify Symbiodinium released from corals, we developed a zooxanthellae “trap” and a quantitative PCR (qPCR) system with Symbiodinium clades A–F-specific primer sets. The trap was attached to a branch or the surface of several wild stony corals, and the water samples within the traps, including released Symbiodinium, were subjected to qPCR. All tested corals released clade C Symbiodinium at estimates of ~5,900 cells h−1 cm−2 of coral surface. Although all tested Pocillopora eydouxi harboured both clades C and D, some of these colonies released only clade C or released a lesser amount of clade D than that in the tissues. Our Symbiodinium quantification system revealed that wild hermatypic corals constantly release Symbiodinium to the environment. Our result suggests that some corals may discharge certain clades of Symbiodinium alternatively.  相似文献

Ecological information on coastal fish distribution patterns and habitat use can be greatly improved by nocturnal samplings and observations. To this purpose, the structure of a Mediterranean fish assemblage inhabiting the shallow rocky littoral of Linosa Island (Sicily Strait, Italy) was examined by using visual census to detect possible diel variations in species composition and abundance. Day–night fish distribution patterns were investigated by multivariate and univariate analyses. Overall, 42 fish taxa belonging to 19 families were recorded: 35 during the day and 24 during the night. Seventeen species were common to both diurnal and nocturnal assemblages. Within the diurnal assemblage, Chromis chromis was the most represented species (37.2%), followed by Thalassoma pavo (23.2%) and Sparisoma cretense (10.8%). Within the nocturnal assemblage, the most abundant taxon was Atherina spp. (33.9%), followed by Apogon imberbis (26.4%) and Boops boops (11.5%). Our results indicated wide variation in the abundance and species composition during the day and during the night. Multi Dimensional Scaling plot showed a clear-cut separation between the two assemblages and analysis of similarities found significant differences as well. SIMPER analysis revealed that ten species individually contributed by more than 2.5% to the dissimilarity between diurnal and nocturnal assemblages, T. pavo, C. chromis and S. cretense being the first three species in order of decreasing percentage. ANOVA performed on species richness and fish abundance detected significant differences between diurnal and nocturnal assemblages, the latter showing far lower average values for both variables.  相似文献

A regional benthic survey was conducted in 1994, and the data were used to assess the relationship among three habitat factors (depth, sediment grain size, and latitude) and the distribution of benthic infaunal assemblages on the southern California coastal shelf. Benthic samples were collected with a 0.1 m2 Van Veen grab from 251 sites on the continental shelf (10–200 m deep) from Point Conception, California, to the United States–Mexico international border. The relationship between habitat and assemblages was investigated by conducting a Q-mode cluster analysis to define groups of stations with similar species composition and then examining whether differences were present in physical habitat attributes among those groups of stations. Analysis of data from 175 uncontaminated sites yielded four habitat-related benthic infaunal assemblages along the southern California coastal shelf: a shallow-water assemblage from 10–32 m, a mid-depth assemblage between 32 and 115 m, and two deep-water (115–200 m) assemblages, one in fine and one in coarse sediments. These empirically defined points in the depth and sediment grain size gradients can be used to define reference habitats for the development of biocriteria. Benthic abundance and diversity were greatest in the mid-depth assemblage, conforming to predictions for benthic assemblages in regions of upwelling. Within the 500 km of coastline examined, latitude was not an important factor in defining assemblages. Received: 3 December 1999 / Accepted: 9 October 2000  相似文献

Mucus released by scleractinian corals can act as an important energy and nutrient carrier in coral reef ecosystems, and a distinct isotopic signature would allow following the fate of this material. This study investigates the natural C and N stable isotopic signatures of mucus released by four scleractinian coral genera (Acropora, Fungia, Pocillopora and Stylophora) in comparison with those of suspended particulate organic matter (POM) in seawater of a Northern Red Sea fringing coral reef near Aqaba, Jordan. The natural δ13C and δ15N signatures of coral mucus differed significantly from seawater POM for the majority of seasonal comparisons, but were inappropriate for explicit tracing of mucus in the coral reef food web. Thus, a labeling technique using stable isotope tracers (13C and 15N) was developed that produced δ13C values of up to 122 ± 5‰ (mean ± SE) and δ15N of up to 2,100 ± 151‰ in mucus exuded by Fungia corals. 13C and 15N-enriched compounds were rapidly (within 3 h) and light-dependently transferred from the endosymbiotic zooxanthellae to the mucus-producing coral host. The traceability of 15N-labeled mucus was examined by evaluating its uptake and potential utilization by epizoic acoelomorph Waminoa worms naturally occurring on a range of scleractinian coral taxa. This tracer experiment resulted in uptake of coral mucus by the coral-associated acoelomorphs and further demonstrated the possibility to trace stable isotope-labeled coral mucus by revealing a new trophic pathway in coral reef ecosystems.  相似文献

Parasite assemblages are increasingly being used as indicators of their hosts’ biology and ecology, especially for economically important marine species such as the Soleidae. In this study, seven species inhabiting Portuguese coastal waters were examined for external and internal macroparasite infections using standard procedures: Dicologlossa cuneata, Microchirus azevia, Microchirus variegatus, Solea lascaris, Solea senegalensis, Solea solea and Synaptura lusitanica. Despite being closely related, these species present different life history patterns and ecological preferences which were expected to be mirrored by their macroparasite assemblages. The aim of the study was, therefore, to study the variation of these assemblages, within and between host species, along the Portuguese coast in order to evaluate the importance of the hosts’ features and environmental factors in the assemblage compositions. Flatfish were obtained seasonally from commercial fishing vessels operating in three areas (northern, central and southern) along the Portuguese coast. Prevalence and mean abundance were calculated and tested for differences between host sex, areas and seasons. The host specificity index and the importance of the host–parasite relationship were computed based on mean abundance. The total number of parasite individuals, species richness, total prevalence, total mean abundance, diversity and evenness were also calculated. A canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was performed using prevalence and mean abundance data. A total of 44 macroparasite species were found. No significant differences were observed in prevalence and mean abundance between sexes and sampling seasons but, for three of the parasite species, significant differences were found between areas. The highest values of the parasitological and ecological indices were generally registered in the hosts S. lascaris and S. senegalensis and in the southern area. The CCA using the prevalence data revealed the differentiation of S. lascaris samples, which was mainly related to the total prevalence and to the number of important species of macroparasites. When using mean abundance data, the CCA revealed the differentiation of D. cuneata from the south, S. lascaris from the three areas and S. senegalensis from the south, mainly related to total prevalence and richness. The differences found between infection levels and assemblages’ composition were mainly due to differences in hosts’ diet, namely prey type consumption, given that most macroparasites found were transmitted through the food web. However, environmental factors were also important given that they regulate the distribution of ectoparasites and the availability of prey, and therefore the infections’ pattern. These findings were in agreement with the ones from similar studies performed in other species, revealing the importance of parasites as indicators of their hosts’ ecology.  相似文献

At the compacted, north-south line of the ice edge, phytoplankton were sampled during early austral autumn of 1986 in the northwestern Weddell Sea. Cells from discrete water bottle samples from 12 stations on two east-west transects were counted to gain quantitative information on the composition, abundance, distribution, and condition of the phytoplankton in water-column assemblages. Over 70 species were found. The highest numbers of total cells (integrated through the top 150 m) were found in open water, well-separated from and to the east of the ice edge on the southern transect, with 6.01×1010 cells m-2. The relative abundance of diatoms was low at ice-convered stations (< 35% of the total phytoplankton in preserved samples) and high at open-water stations (> 80%); however, the relative abundance of the prymnesiophyte Phaeocystis sp. was high at ice-covered stations (> 60%) and low at open-water stations (< 16%), with lower absolute abundances than during a previous austral-spring phytoplankton increase. In the open ocean, the dominants were the pennate diatoms Fragilariopsis cylindrus, Pseudonitzschia prolongatoides, F. curta, and a small form of the centric diatom Chaetoceros dichaeta in chains. Although the three pennate diatoms were frequently dominant in number, they represented less biomass than C. dichaeta in open waters. Mean phytoplankton abundance was low (0.2×106 cells l-1) but, overall, the diatom cell density (0.14×106 cells l-1) was similar to that found previously during a northward transect from ice-covered to ice-free water at the Weddell-Scotia Sea ice edge (spring 1983). The phytoplankton spatial patterns in the two autumn transects differed, with the more southerly transect exhibiting a higher abundance of diatoms and dinoflagellates. The ratio of full to empty diatoms was higher on the southern transect, indicating a healthy population, while lower ratios of full/empty frustules on the northern transect suggested a generally declining population. However, Phaeocystis sp. was more abundant on the northern transect.  相似文献

We have analyzed the composition, diversity, density and biomass of a temporal series of samples taken in a Tubularia indivisa community, which dominates a shipwreck in the North Sea waters (N 51°23′,730–E 02°29′,790, 17 nautical miles from the coast, 30 m depth). This shipwreck has structures emerging up to 8 m above the seabed. Water temperature ranged from 4.2°C in March to 20.3°C in August. Salinity showed few variations around 33.9 psu. Bottom tidal currents followed a semi-diurnal cycle and were preferentially NE oriented with 84% of them in the range 0.25–0.75 m s−1. The mean value for total suspended matter was 6.2 mg l−1 with large variations on a monthly scale. The species richness of samples varied from 15 in October to 42 in August with a mean value of 33 species. Diversity indices were higher during autumn and winter because of the strong dominance of a few crustacean species during the warmer months. The total density of individuals ranged from 6,500 ind m−2 in October to 445,800 ind m−2 in July, most of these individuals belonging to the amphipod species Jassa herdmani. The biomass of the T. indivisa community varied from 9 g AFDW m−2 in October to 1,106 g AFDW m−2 in July, with T. indivisa itself constituting between 59 and 82% of the total biomass. The biomass of T. indivisa was positively correlated with species richness and with the density of 23% of the species identified on this community, suggesting that T. indivisa plays an important structural role in this habitat. This was further confirmed by the number of species associated with T. indivisa which was generally superior to 55% of the sorted species. Multivariate analysis indicated strong differences between spring/summer−autumn/winter assemblages mostly but not solely due to the abundance patterns of species. These findings support the conclusion that shipwrecks in Belgian waters allow the development of assemblages dominated by a high biomass of T. indivisa which in turn provides shelter for high densities and biomass of epizoites. These assemblages will further show large monthly variations in densities and composition due to large variation in T. indivisa biomass under an apparent repetitive annual cycle. The surface sediment characteristics related to benthic microalgae primary production were studied at the Dogger Bank, North Sea, in order to evaluate the potential role of microphytobenthos as a food source for the macrobenthic fauna. Twenty-one stations were sampled in July 2001 and May 2002, with water depth ranging from 16.3 to 68.5 m. High-performance liquid chromatography pigment analyses revealed that concentrations of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll c and fucoxanthin are mainly associated with benthic diatom flora at most parts of the Dogger Bank. High percentage of phytopigments (>50%) was firmly attached to sand grains at the stations shallower than 40 m water depth. The deeper stations were characterized by a phytopigment composition originating from pelagic phytoplankton settled on the sea floor. Qualitative microscopy showed that the benthic microflora on top of the Bank mainly consists of small diatoms (5–10 μm), such as e.g., Diploneis spp., living attached to the sand grains. The results are discussed concerning possible implications for ecology and biogeochemistry of the Dogger Bank area.  相似文献
