The simultaneous uptake of nitrogenous nutrients and inorganic carbon was measured in shipboard incubations of natural phytoplankton populations, using tracer additions of 13C-bicarbonate and 15N-labelled nitrogenous substrates. From March 1991 through March 1992, three stations on the Scotian Shelf (eastern Canada) were sampled monthly at ten depths in the euphotic zone. Additions of labelled nitrogen compounds ranged between 0.5 and 98% of ambient concentrations. Most of the C/N (at/at) uptake ratios were lower than the Redfield ratio, suggesting that nitrogen was not limiting. The fixation of carbon with and without addition of nitrate, ammonium or urea was generally similar. Some samples presented significant differences in carbon uptake rate between the four treatments, but these differences were not related to nitrogen enrichment (percent or nitrogen species). Given these results, the double-labelling method appears to be a reliable tool for measuring the simultaneous uptake of carbon and nitrogen by natural phytoplankton.  相似文献

Sodium-dependent transport of alanine and serine by Platymonas subcordiformis was demonstrated by evaluating the kinetics of entry of these substrates over a range of concentrations of ambient sodium. The reciprocal of the concentration at which entry rate was half maximal (K t ) was linearly related to ambient sodium concentration; maximum entry (V max) was not affected. Entry of labeled amino acids as measured by determining radioactivity in the medium was close to but slightly less than rates of net entry as determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. This difference presumably reflects extrusion of labeled carbon by the cells in a form not detectable by the chromatographic techniques employed. The coupling coefficient (sodium ions per amino acid molecule) for entry of alanine and serine was evaluated and determined to be 2. Methylaminoisobutyric acid was not taken up by P. subcordiformis and had no inhibitory effect on uptake of alanine or serine. B-2-aminobicycloheptane-2-carboxylic acid competitively inhibited uptake of both substrates. The internal sodium concentration of P. subcordiformis was measured, and the maximum gradient energetically favorable for amino acid transport was calculated from data in the present work and drawn from the literature. Assuming that uptake of amino acids is strictly sodium-dependent, an amino acid concentration gradient of the order of 106 (cell:medium) can be achieved. This concentration differential permits net uptake of amino acids by P. subcordiformis from ambient amino acid levels in the nanomolar range.  相似文献

A method of rapidly determining zooplankton grazing rates on natural mixed phytoplankton populations using 14C is described. The method simplifies the design of grazing experiments as the grazing time can be kept short enough to prevent recycling of the isotope, and growth of the phytoplankton substrate. Very high specific activity, 14C-labelled phytoplankton concentrated either by centrifugation or sieving, may be used either as the sole grazing substrate, or as a tracer in natural mixed phytoplankton. Zooplankton, confined in glass jars at either ambient, or higher than ambient concentrations, are permitted to feed on the phytoplankton for periods of 30 min and 2 h, and are then separated by sieving. The zooplankton community grazing rate, or, if the samples are sorted into species, the individual species grazing rates, can be determined after scintillation counting of the zooplankton. The rate of appearance of 14C-labelled phytoplankton in the zooplankton is an estimate of the grazing rate, and the slope of the line joining the grazing rates at various phytoplankton concentrations gives an estimate of the grazing rate constant for the zooplankton population. The method provides a quick way of obtaining both zooplankton population, and individual species grazing rates on natural mixed phytoplankton. In two experiments, labelled phytoplankton was used as the sole grazing substrate in concentrations ranging between 0.4 and 5 times ambient levels. Grazing rate constants, for net-caught zooplankton concentrated to 46 times (Experiment 1) and 28 times (Experiment, 2) ambient estuarine levels were-0.14and-0.12 of the phytoplankton standing stock per day, respectively. There was a linear increase in the amount of phytoplankton grazed with an increase in phytoplankton concentration up to four times ambient phytoplankton levels. When tracer amounts of labelled phytoplankton were added to samples containing both phytoplankton and zooplankton at ambient concentrations the grazing rate constants were-0.28 and-0.42 of the phytoplankton standing stock per day. We conclude that zooplankton grazing was the major control factor of phytoplankton population size during October–November 1975 in South West Arm, Port Hacking, near Sydney, Australia.  相似文献

The accumulation and depuration of Cs in the green mussels (Perna viridis) commonly found in the subtropical and tropical waters were studied under the laboratory conditions using radiotracer techniques. Following an initial rapid sorption onto the mussel's tissues, uptake of Cs exhibited linear patterns over a short exposure time (8 h) at different ambient Cs concentrations. The concentration factor was independent of ambient Cs concentration. The calculated uptake rate and initial sorption constant of Cs were directly proportional to the ambient Cs concentration. The calculated uptake rate constant from the dissolved phase in the mussels was as low as 0.026 l g−1 d−1. Uptake rates of Cs in the mussels were inversely related to the ambient salinity. Uptake increased about twofold when the salinity was reduced from 33 to 15 ppt. The effect of salinity on Cs uptake was primarily due to the change in ambient K+ concentration. The uptake rate decreased in a power function with increasing tissue dry weight of the mussels, although the initial sorption was not related to the mussel's body size. The efflux rate constant of Cs in the mussels was 0.15 to 0.18 d−1, and was the highest recorded to date among different metals in marine bivalves. The efflux rate constant also decreased in a power function with increasing tissue dry weight of mussels. A simple kinetic model predicted that the bioconcentration factor of Cs in the green mussels was 145, which was higher than measurements taken in their temperate counterparts. The bioconcentration factor also decreased in a power function with increasing tissue dry weight of mussels. Received: 27 October 1999 / Accepted: 16 June 2000  相似文献

We have developed a method for the determination of ammonium uptake and regeneration rates applying the principle of the seawater dilution technique. The method is based on the separation of uptake and regeneration processes in the dilution series. A model is used to estimate ammonium uptake and regeneration rates simultaneously, in addition to phytoplankton growth and grazing rates. The method was applied to dilution experiments conducted during a two-year study of the upwelling region off Oregon, USA. Ammonium uptake and regeneration rates determined with our method ranged from 0.5 to 3 mol l-1d-1 and from 0.2 to 2.9 mol l-1d-1, respectively. These values agree well with those from other studies applying 15N tracer techniques in the same or similar environments. We found a close coupling between ammonium uptake and regeneration, and a strong relationship between ammonium regeneration and grazing rates. In addition, the nutritional status of the phytoplankton community could be assessed by comparing instantaneous ammonium uptake rates with the specific phytoplankton growth rates. Using the dilution technique to determine ammonium uptake and regeneration rates of the plankton community is a promising alternative to the application of tracer techniques conventionally used to determine these rates.  相似文献

It is now possible to divide particulate primary production into algal and heterotrophic components without physical separation. This depends on two innovations, the introduction of isotope in the form of labelled dissolved product(s) of primary production and the employment of a data analysis specifically designed for tracer kinetic incorporation experiments. The 14C technique described by Steemann Nielsen (1952) is inapplicable in the analyses of certain classes of systems and kinetic tracer incorporation experiments must be employed instead. We show that measurement of PDOC production rate requires such kinetic tracer analyses. Measurements made in the laboratory on water taken from 2 m depth in South West Arm of the Port Hacking estuary showed that: (1) the steady-state rate of PDOC production was 0.10 to 0.13 mg C.m-3.h-1; (2) the rate of PDOC incorporation into microheterotroph particulate organic carbon was 0.10 to 0.12 mg C.m-3.h-1; (3) the rate at which PDOC was respired to CO2 was 0.001 to 0.003 mg C.m-3.h-1. (4) the PDOC makes up only about 0.1% of the total dissolved organic carbon. The size class of particles associated with PDOC production differed from the size class responsible for uptake of PDOC. More than 50% of the PDOC production was associated with particles having a nominal diameter range of 20 to 63 m, while this fraction was responsible for <10% of the incorporation.  相似文献

The activity of the heterotrophic microbial population in the saline Lake Grevelingen (The Netherlands) and the Mediterranean Etang Salses Leucate (France) was determined by measuring the oxygen consumption rate, and the uptake of 14C-labelled glycollate, pyruvate and an amino acid mixture. The maximum uptake rate of the applied organic compounds in Lake Grevelingen was generally less than 10% of the carbon mineralization rate calculated from the oxygen consumption experiments. Only for pyruvate and glycollate higher values were found of about 30 to 40% with one exceptionally high value for pyruvate of 149%. However, these higher percentages were found in winter, when the activity of the heterotrophic microbial population was very low. In Etang Salses Leucate higher maximum uptake rates of the 14C-labelled compounds were found, relating this uptake to the oxygen consumption rate. Yet the maximum uptake rate is still always lower than 35% of the carbon mineralization calculated from the oxygen uptake rate. Taking into account that maximum uptake rates were considered, the results demonstrate that the uptake of 14C-labelled organic compounds represents a serious underestimation of the activity of the bacterial population in situ. The extent of the underestimation depends on the water type. It was concluded that the determination of the heterotrophic activity by measuring oxygen consumption rates offers a better insight into the carbon mineralization process in natural waters than the uptake experiments with 14C-labelled substrates.Communication no. 228 of the Delta Institute for Hydrobiological Research, Yerseke, The Netherlands  相似文献

Temperature, salinity, bottom-sediment type, and zinc concentration all influenced Cd uptake by 4 marine bivalves (Mya arenaria, Mytilus edulis, Mulinia lateralis and Nucula proxima) in short-term static assay systems using 109Cd as a tracer. The experimental system consisted of aquaria containing 20 l of seawater maintained under controlled light and temperature conditions. The water contained either 5 or 20 g/l Cd and tracer. Distribution and kinetics of the metal were monitored in the water column and organisms. The results demonstrate that Cd uptake rates differed widely among the organisms tested. An increase in temperature increased Cd uptake rate by all test organisms. A decrease in salinity increased Cd uptake by all organisms tested. The presence of bottom sediment depresses Cd accumulation in some benthic animals. Zinc in concentrations of 0.5 mg/l substantially decreased Cd uptake by Mytilus edulis and Mulinia lateralis. It is suggested that all important species and environmental variables be considered when studying heavy-metal uptake by marine organisms or when establishing water-quality criteria.  相似文献

Uptake of 51Cr(III) is faster than uptake of 51Cr(VI), but it occurs mainly on the surface of the animals. Steady state is attained after 28 d. The resulting concentration factor is about 200. Although the uptake of 51Cr(VI) is slower, it is more intensively distributed into the organs and tissues of the animals. Steady state was not attained during the experiments (35 d); the highest concentration factor reached was about 10. The uptake of both 51Cr(III) and 51Cr(VI) seems to be passive. For both chemical forms of chromium, the loss rate is inversely proportional to the exposure time. When the uptake lasted longer, owing to the distribution of Cr(VI) into the organs and tissues, the loss rate of Cr(III) is somewhat faster relative to the loss rate of 51Cr(VI). The opposite is the case when the uptake of both forms lasts only two days. On the basis of the distribution and loss experiments, we argue that hexavalent chromium in living organisms is reduced to the trivalent form and then complexed with organic molecules.  相似文献

The effects of several environmental variables on net nitrate uptake by the scleractinian coral Diploria strigosa were investigated under controlled flow conditions. D. strigosa exhibited nitrate uptake rates ranging from 1 to 5 nmol cm−2 h−1 at ambient concentrations of 0.1–0.3 μM that are typical of oligotrophic reefs such as Bermuda. Net uptake ceased at approximately 0.045 μM. The uptake was positively correlated with concentration up to a saturation concentration of approximately 3 μM. The uptake was also positively correlated with water velocity at 1 μM, but not at 6 μM, suggesting diffusional limitation at low concentrations and kinetic limitation at higher concentrations. Nitrate uptake by D. strigosa was not affected by light intensity or time of day, but was almost completely inhibited by 48 h exposure to ammonium levels found on many reefs.  相似文献

New-production (nitrate uptake) rates in the equatorial Pacific were estimated by parallel measurements of nitrate disappearance from sea water using a colorimetric method and of 15N-labelled nitrate (15NO3 ) incorporation into particulate organic nitrogen (PON) collected on GF/F filters (net nitrate uptake, conventional 15N-tracer method) and Anopore (0.2 μm) membranes. Regression analyses of 74 sample pairs gathered during 12 and 24 h productivity experiments revealed a significant positive relationship between decreasing nitrate level and 15NO3 accumulation into PON retained on GF/F filters, but the slopes of Model I and Model II regression lines were 1.18 and 1.29, respectively, suggesting that 15 to 22% of 15NO3 removed from the dissolved fraction were lost to another N-pool. Two possible avenues for the missing 15NO3 have been examined: uptake by submicron particles passed through the GF/F filters, and loss as dissolved organic nitrogen (DON). Nitrate uptake by small cells not recovered on GF/F filters, could be safely eliminated as a cause of loss, since 15NO3 uptake rates obtained from 15N entering PON collected on GF/F filters agreed well with those obtained from 15N entering PON collected on Anopore membranes (32 sample pairs). Inspection of the DON pool of 0.2 μm filtrates for excess-15N enrichment (20 samples) revealed that in nitrate-rich waters (equatorial upwelling between 1°N and 10°S), loss of 15NO3 as DO15N accounted for <5% of net nitrate uptake. In samples from subtropical oligotrophic waters (from 11°S southward), however, 15NO3 loss as DO15N represented up to 20% of net NO3 uptake. These results, as well as experimental considerations concerning the use of colorimetric and isotopic methods to measure new production show that: (1) earlier reported high discrepancies between nitrate decreases (ΔNO3 ) and 15NO3 incorporation into filterable particles (ΔNO3 /15NO3 incorporation >2) were probably erroneous; (2) the use of GF/F filters does not result in an underestimation of new production, although it was found to underestimate PON concentrations by up to 60%; (3) in the equatorial upwelling area (1°N to 10°S), which has high ambient nitrate levels (>2000 nmol l−1) but only slight changes in concentration (0 to 80 nmol l−1 d−1), new production is more accurately estimated by the isotopic method than by the chemical method; (4) in subtropical oligotrophic waters (from 11°S southward) with low ambient nitrate levels (0 to 100 nmol l−1), both procedures are appropriate as long as nitrate removal per incubation period is >3 nmol l−1 (lower rates are only detectable with the isotopic method); (5) the traditional 15N-tracer technique does not substantially underestimate net new-production in the equatorial Pacific, and failure to account for the loss of 15NO3 as DON, i.e. to estimate gross nitrate uptake (gross uptake = net uptake + 15N loss) tends to underestimate new production on an average by only 10%. Overall, the apparent low level of new production in the nitrate-rich area of the central equatorial Pacific seems to be a fact, and may be ascribable to other nutrient (macro and micro) deficiencies and/or to intense in situ recycling of ammonium and nitrate (regenerated production) rather than to inaccurate nitrate uptake rates measured with the classical 15N-tracer technique. The quantitative importance of light-mediated, dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) utilization in relation to overall nitrogen-assimilation in Aureococcusanophagefferens Hargraves et Sieburth was assessed during a brown tide event in Shinnecock Bay, Long Island, 24 through 26 July 1995. The growth response of A. anophagefferens was maximal in organic-rich Bay water and decreased proportional to the organic:inorganic nutrient ratio of the water. Short-term uptake measurements with six nitrogenous substrates revealed that reduced nitrogen could potentially represent 95% of overall nitrogen uptake of which 70% was due to organic nitrogen alone. Potential uptake of urea by the A. anophagefferens-dominated bloom was substan tially greater than uptake of the other substrates tested during the study, contributing the largest percentage of total nitrogen uptake (58 to 64%; ρ max(urea) 4.4 μg  atom N l−1 h−1), followed by NH4 + (18 to 26%; ρ′max(NH4+) 2 μg atom N l−1 h−1). The combined rates of uptake of algal extract, lysine and glutamic acid contributed between 11 and 16% of total uptake, whereas NO3 contributed 5 to 8%. Based on the kinetic determinations from this study we suggest an ecological framework for the events leading to the dominance and abundance of A. anophagefferens in coastal bays. The mechanisms for uptake of inorganic carbon (Ci) for photosynthesis and calcification of a perforate foraminifer, Amphistegina lobifera Larsen, and an imperforate species, Amphisorus hemprichii Ehrenberg, from the Gulf of Eilat, Red Sea were studied in 1986–1987 using 14C tracer techniques. Total Ci uptake of A. lobifera and photosynthetic carbon uptake of A. hemprichii fit the Hill-Whittingham equation that describes the overall rate of enzymatic reactions that are provided with their substrate through a diffusion barrier. This suggests that diffusion is the rate limiting step for total Ci uptake in A. lobifera. Photosynthesis by the isolated symbionts and uptake of CO3 2- for calcification obey Michaelis-Menten kinetics indicating that enzymatic reactions determine the rate of the separate processes. Both photosynthesis and calcification can be inhibited without affecting each other. Calcification rates in A. lobifera were optimal at Ca levels around normal seawater concentration and were sensitive to inhibitors of respiratory adenosine triphosphate (ATP) generation and Ca-ATP-ase. This indicates that Ca uptake is also active. Calcification rates of A. hemprichii increased linearly as a function of external Ci concentration over the entire experimental range (0 to 4 mM Ci). In contrast, photosynthetic rates showed Hill-Whittingham type kinetics. The dependence of calcification on the CO3 2- concentration was also linear, suggesting that its diffusion is the rate limiting step for calcification in A. hemprichii. Increasing Ca concentrations yielded higher calcification rates over the entire range measured (0 to 40 mM Ca). Calcification in A. hemprichii was less sensitive to inhibitors of ATP generation than in A. lobifera, suggesting that in A. hemprichii energy supply is less important for this process.  相似文献

The anaerobic microbial uptake of alanine and aspartic acid was determined in 4 diverse salt-marsh soils (tall and short Spartina alterniflora, creek bank, and mud flat). Uptake in soil slurries was determined by the radioisotopic tracer technique at one substrate concentration (<250 pmoles cm-3). Dissolved free alanine and aspartic acid concentrations in the interstitial nutrient pool ranged from approximately 1 to 500 pmoles cm-3. In the short S. alterniflora soil, maximum microbial uptake of alanine was found at a depth of 10 cm (8.32 pmoles cm-3 h-1); in the tall S. alterniflora soil maximum uptake was at 20 cm (23.4 pmoles cm-3 h-1). The utilization of aspartic acid appeared constant over the depth interval investigated (0 to 60 cm). The turnover times of alanine and aspartic acid in the tall and short S. alterniflora soils ranged from 5 to 25 h and 40 to 100 h, respectively. The percent of the labeled alanine and aspartic acid taken up that was mineralized by tall and short s. alterniflora microbenthos ranged from 20 to 50% and 5 to 20%, respectively.  相似文献

Kinetics of glucose and amino acid uptake by attached and free-living bacteria were compared in the upper 70 m of the oligotrophic north-western Mediterranean Sea. Potential uptake rates of amino acids were higher than those of glucose in all the samples analysed. Cell-specific potential uptake rates of attached bacteria were up to two orders of magnitude higher than those of total bacteria, both for amino acids and glucose (0.72–153 amol amino acids cell−1 h−1 and 0.05–58.42 amol glucose cell−1 h−1 for attached bacteria and 0.34–1.37 amol amino acids cell−1 h−1 and 0.07–0.22 amol glucose cell−1 h−1 for total bacteria). The apparent K m values were also higher in attached bacteria than in total bacteria, both for amino acids and glucose. These results would reflect the presence of different uptake systems in attached and free-living bacteria, which is in accordance with the different nutrient characteristics of their microenvironments, ambient water and particles. Attached bacteria show transport systems with low affinity, which characterise a bacterial community adapted to high concentration of substrates. The effect of ambient ammonium concentration on the nitrate uptake rate of marine phytoplankton was investigated. These studies consisted of laboratory experiments using unialgal species and field experiments using natural phytoplankton communities. In laboratory experiments, ammonium suppressed the uptake rates of nitrate and nitrite. Approximately 30 min were required for ammonium to exhibit its fully inhibitory effect on nitrate uptake. At high ammonium concentration (>3 g-at/l), a residual nitrate uptake rate of approximately 0.006 h-1 was observed. When the ambient ammonium concentration was reduced to a value less than 1 g-at/l, the suppressed nitrate uptake rate subsequently attained a value comparable to that observed before the addition of ammonium. A range of 25 to 60% reduction in the nitrate uptake rate of natural phytoplankton communities was observed at ambient ammonium concentrations of 1.0 g-at/l. A mechanism is proposed for the suppression of nitrate uptake rate by ammonium through feedback control of the nitrate permease system and/or the nitrate reductase enzyme system. The feedback control is postulated to be regulated by the level of total amino acids in the cell.Contribution No. 936 from the Department of Oceanography, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington 98195, USA. Phosphate uptake by intertidal algae in relation to zonation and season   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The removal of phosphate from ambient seawater by whole plants of five species of fucoid algae, collected from the east coast of N. Ireland in 1988 and 1989, was followed over 6-h periods. A transient uptake pattern was observed forPelvetia canaliculata (L.) Dcne. et Thuret,Fucus spiralis L.,F. vesiculosus L. andF. serratus L., consisting of an initial period of high uptake, followed by a phase of zero uptake and then a period at an intermediate rate.Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis had a constant slow rate of uptake over 6 h. The initial uptake rate ofF. spiralis was significantly greater than that of any other species. Phosphate uptake over a 2-h period was measured at concentrations ranging from that of ambient seawater to 25µg-at. l–1 for whole plants ofF. spiralis andF. serratus, using a large scale batch method. A small scale batch method was used for whole plants ofP. canaliculata and sections of the other four species investigated. Uptake abilities of the algae at low concentrations of phosphate were compared using the parameterV 1 (the uptake rate at 1µg-at. l–1) and at high concentrations usingV max, the maximum uptake rate. These kinetic parameters of uptake were calculated using a method that avoids bias and permits statistical evaluation of the results. The fucoid algae studied could be divided into two distinct groups on the basis of their abilities to take up phosphate from seawater.P. canaliculata andA. nodosum had low values ofV 1 in winter, which were also correlated with their positions on the shore and did not vary between winter and summer. TheFucus species had higher values ofV 1 in winter, which were also correlated with their positions on the shore. In summer, however,V 1-values for these species decreased and no longer correlated with their shore heights. TheV max-value forF. spiralis was higher in winter than in summer but was signifcantly greater than that of any other species at all times of year. The ecological significance ofV max is discussed in relation to nutrient limitation and the possible occurrence of patches of high nutrient concentration in the intertidal environment.  相似文献

Nitrogen uptake by the kelp Ecklonia maxima Osbeck and phytoplankton was examined under different conditions of nutrient availability in a kelp bed off the Cape of Good Hope by measuring nutrient depletion in large plastic bags by the kelp and 15N uptake by phytoplankton. E. maxima took up nitrate and ammonia, but not urea, and showed only a weak preference for reduced nitrogen. Phytoplankton absorbed all three forms of nitrogen available, with a preference for ammonia and urea. Ambient nitrate concentration exhibited a marked and rapid decrease with northerly winds and an increase in response to offshore southerly winds. Nitrogen uptake by E. maxima was linearly related to ambient concentration and did not saturate even at nitrate concentrations >20g-at N l-1, resulting in a significantly higher tissue nitrogen content under upwelling conditions. Nitrate imported by upwelling was the chief source of nitrogen utilised within the kelp bed. Locally regenerated nitrogen (ammonia and urea) was calculated to contribute only ca 4% of total nitrogen uptake during upwelling and 30% during the relaxation or downwelling phase.  相似文献

A total of 168 PM10 samples were collected during the year of 2005 at eight sites in the city of Wuxi in China. Fifteen chemical elements, three water-soluble ions, total carbon and organic carbon were analyzed. Six source categories were identified and their contributions to ambient PM10 in Wuxi were estimated using a nested chemical mass balance method that reduces the effects of colinearity on the chemical mass balance model. In addition, the concentrations of secondary aerosols, such as secondary organic carbon, sulfate and nitrate, were quantified. The spatially averaged PM10 was high in the spring and winter (123 ??g·m?3 and low in the summer-fall (90 ??g·m?3). According to the result of source apportionment, resuspended dust was the largest contributor to ambient PM10, accounting for more than 50% of the PM10 mass. Coal combustion (14.6%) and vehicle exhaust (9.4%) were also significant source categories of ambient PM10. Construction and cement dust, sulfates, secondary organic carbon, and nitrates made contributions ranging between 4.1% and 4.9%. Other source categories such as steel manufacturing dust and soil dust made low contributions to ambient PM10.  相似文献

The phosphorus metabolism of Pyrocystis noctiluca Murray (Schuett) 1886 has characteristics which may enhance its potential for success in orthophosphate impoverished waters. The steady-state phosphate uptake rates were equal in the light and dark, and were directly proportional to both the phosphorus cell quota and the cell division rate. In contrast, nutrient-saturated uptake rates were multiphasic, faster in the light than the dark, 2 to 4 orders of magnitude greater than steady-state rates, and were inversely proportional to both the phosphorus cell quota and the cell division rate. These uptake characteristics suggest that P. noctiluca may take up phosphate coincidently at their typically low ambient concentrations as well as to exploit episodic nutrient events in nature. Cell division rates were a hyperbolic function of the ambient orthophosphate concentration. The shortest doubling time was 8.7 d, the phosphate concentration at half the maximum division rate was 0.15 M and the threshold, concentration for cell division was ca 0.05 M PO 4 3- . Division rates of P. noctiluca in the ocean are much faster than predicted from the measured ambient orthophosphate concentrations. Since this dinoflagellate has high naturally occurring alkaline phosphatase activities, and can utilize organic-P compounds, we suggest that organic-P can be as important as orthophosphate in supporting the observed division rates of P. noctiluca in the sea.  相似文献
