Methods are compiled and developed for the analysis of community structure in the deep-sea benthos. These methods are tailored to the conditions of high species diversity and low standing crop. A new modification of the 0.25-m2 box corer is described. Fisher's index of dispersion is adapted by using each species as a replicate. When the resultant summary statistic is partitioned in the illustrated manner, it is possible to determine whether species indeed behave as homegeneous replicates of a single dispersion pattern, or, alternatively, whether habitat partitioning is indicated. Species are also used as replicates in a modification of Pielou's “joins” technique of determining whether high-density and low-density areas of given species are randomly mingled. An indirect analytical approach is developed which proposes that, if an environmental grain of relatively small dimensions has been important in structuring the community, species which have smaller ambits will be more diverse than species having larger ambits.  相似文献

The effect of the trophic factor on large-scale distributional patterns of deep-sea macrobenthos inhabiting the floor of the World Ocean has been studied. Two hundred and twenty-eight bottom trawl samples collected by Soviet research vessels in the Pacific and Indian Oceans at depths ranging from 3000 to 6000 m were analyzed. For each sample, the weight of animals with a similar mode of feeding was determined to find the weight ratio of representatives of three main trophic groups, i.e., deposit-feeders, suspension-feeders and carnivores. These data, indicating predominance of alternate groups as well as data on their geographic distribution, were related to feeding conditions which depend on: (1) rates of sedimentation, (2) nature of sediments, (3) content of organic carbon, (4) degree of transformation of organic matter on and within sediments, and, when available, (5) data on redox potential, biochemical oxygen consumption, and state of heterotrophic microflora in the sediments. In dealing with the feeding conditions of deep-sea macrobenthos in the Atlantic Ocean, biological characteristics were deduced from literature data on the composition of sediments, their redox potential and organic carbon content. As a result of this research, eutrophic and oligotrophic regions on the floor of the World Ocean have been distinguished and their boundaries defined. Eutrophic regions lie within areas with high biological productivity of surface-water layers, and cover the peripheral and equatorial parts of the oceans; they are characterized by quantities of labile (digestible) organic matter within sediments which are sufficient for deposit-feeders to predominate in eutrophic regions everywhere, except on considerable bottom elevations. Oligotrophic regions are confined to open areas of the oceans lying beyond the equatorial belt; they are characterized by very low rates of sedimentation and, consequently, by scarce quantities of deposited organic matter. Here, suspension-feeders predominate, although their population density is very low.  相似文献

Relationships between community structure and environmental factors were sought through multivariate analysis (quantification analysis and correspondence analysis) of data obtained in a benthic macrofauna survey of a rocky low-tide platform located at Usujiri, southern Hokkaido, Japan. A total of 21 species were found. However, their annual mean abundance was dominated by only a few species. Three dominant species of the platform (Chthamalus challengeri, Littorina brevicula andSeptifer virgatus) accounted for an average of 92% of total abundance. Three environmental factors with associated species groups were examined. Among them, micro-topographic characteristics and wave action defined the main correspondence variables.L. brevicula was a characteristic member of the boulder and sheltered field.S. virgatus was the dominant species of sloped surfaces.C. challengeri, S. virgatus, andMytilus edulis were characteristic of ledge or bench environments. Finally,C. challengeri was characteristic of nip and high wave-exposure environments, given its exclusive appearences in these locations. However, as the degree of exposure depends on the scale of wash through the platform, it is directly limited by the microtopographic properties of low-tide platforms. Specific environmental influences such as exposure and height above the datum-plane were rather disapparent. Any overall effects on the community structure were synthesized by those of microtopography. After complete consideration, it was concluded that the community structure of the macrobenthos in this low-tide platform was found to be primarily under the influence of microtopographic characteristics.  相似文献

The biomass of the macrobenthic communities of the southwest lagoon of New Caledonia is analysed with special reference to tropical soft-bottom assemblages. The samples were obtained in 1986 from 350 Smith-McIntyre grabs as well as by diving over an area of 3 500 m2, and covered a wide size-range of benthic organisms. The classification of the biomass data into taxonomic groups revealed the following: (1) a zoobenthic biomass (mean=13 g ash-free dry wt m-2) that is high compared to values previously published for tropical systems, but fairly low compared to those recorded for medium and high latitudes; (2) a large macrophytic biomass (45% of ash-free dry wt); (3) dominance by weight of sponges, molluscs and cnidarians over the other faunal groups. The distribution of the biomass among the trophic groups revealed the following: (1) the dominance by weight of suspension-feeders, which account for 67% of the total zoobenthic ash-free dry wt; (2) the absence of trophic group amensalism between filter-feeders and deposit-feeders whatever the degree of bottom muddiness; (3) the existence of a relationship between the biomass of surface deposit-feeders and ATP at the surface layer of the sediment, suggesting that this group feeds preferentially on living particles. Differences in trophic structure between the muddy-bottom, greysand and white-sand communities of the lagoon reflect the functional characteristics of each bottom type.  相似文献

The boundaries as well as the macro-epibenthic biomass distribution and composition of a North Adriatic benthic community, dominated by the brittle star Ophiothrix quinquemaculata (D.Ch.), the sponges Reniera ssp., and the ascidians Microcosmus ssp. were determined. Transects totalling more than 80 km (i.e., a recorded area of approximately 150 000 m2) were taken by means of a combined TV- and photocamera sled. The observations, TV-recordings, and photos, together with 392 diver-collected quantitative samples were evaluated. The biomass values were used to establish isobenths. Within the community, the mean biomass, measured as wet weight, amounted to 370 (±73) g/m2 with maxima of more than 1000 g/m2. 64% of the biomass was due to the designating group Ophiothrix-Reniera-Micrcosmus, 87.5% were represented by filter- and suspension-feeding species alone. The mean biomass in the peripheral areas was evaluated at 166 (±62) g/m2. Biomass distribution and composition is examined, and the ecological function and meaning of the observed patterns is discussed. This investigation was carried out within the frame of a joint programme between the Lehrkanzel für Meeresbiologie, University of Vienna, and the Marine Biological Station, Portoroz, University of Ljubljana.  相似文献

This study analyses distribution and abundance patterns of mesozooplankton communities at 13 stations in the coastal waters over a marine outfall area in the northeastern South China Sea. Cruises were conducted in March, June and September 2002, and plankton samples were collected with a 333 microm North Pacific net. The Mesozooplankton was dominated by calanoid Copepods, Cladocera, Chaetognatha and Pteropoda. Stations located near the entrance of the harbor provided a relatively higher abundance of Noctilucales and Radiolarians. In total, 20 zooplankton groups were identified in which, Calanoida, Cladocera, Chaetognatha, Pteropoda, Poecilostomatoida and Appendicularia comprised 92.77% of the total zooplankton abundance. Copepoda dominated in all three cruises, comprising 65.32% of the total mesozooplankton abundance. Samples collected in June recorded higher mesozooplankton abundance than March and September samples. Onshore stations recorded higher BOD values, higher abundance of Noctilucales and Radiolarians and a relativelylower abundance of the overall mesozooplankton. Total mesozooplankton abundance did not correlate significantly with temperature, pH, or dissolved oxygen, but correlated negatively with BOD.  相似文献

Roads, Development, and Conservation in the Congo Basin   总被引:16,自引:0,他引:16
Abstract: Road density is closely linked to market accessibility, economic growth, natural resource exploitation, habitat fragmentation, deforestation, and the disappearance of wildlands and wildlife. Research in the Republic of Congo shows that roads established and maintained by logging concessions intensify bushmeat hunting by providing hunters greater access to relatively unexploited populations of forest wildlife and by lowering hunters' costs to transport bushmeat to market. Reconciling the contrary effects of roads on economic development and biodiversity conservation is one of the key challenges to wildlife managers in all nations. As the Democratic Republic of Congo prepares to reconstruct its almost completely collapsed road system, the government, donors, and conservation organizations have a unique opportunity to strategically prioritize investment in segments of the network that would maximize local and national economic benefits while minimizing adverse effects on forest wildlife.  相似文献

During the "International Arctic Ocean Expedition 1991" (20 August-21 September 1991) mesozooplankton was sampled at six stations in the Nansen, Amundsen and Makarov Basins of the central Arctic Ocean from 1,500 m depth to the surface by multiple opening/closing net hauls. Total mesozooplankton abundance decreased from 268 ind. m-3 in the surface layer (0-50 m) to <25 ind. m-3 below 200 m depth. The small copepods Oithona similis and Microcalanus pygmaeus, as well as copepod nauplii, were most abundant close to the surface, while Oncaea borealis and Spinocalanus spp. frequently occurred at greater depth. Mesozooplankton dry mass (DM) integrated over the upper 1,500 m of the water column was surprisingly stable throughout the investigation area and measured 2.0ǂ.3 g DM m-2. Dry mass in the upper 50 m measured 20.9 mg m-3 and was dominated by Calanus hyperboreus (57.4%) and C. glacialis (21.1%). C. finmarchicus was very abundant only in the Nansen Basin. Below 200 m the calanoid copepods Metridia longa, Microcalanus pygmaeus and Pareuchaeta spp., the decapod Hymenodora glacialis and chaetognaths of the genus Eukrohnia were the principal contributors to biomass values of <1 mg DM m-3. Hence, vertical changes in abundance, biomass and species composition were much more pronounced than regional differences between the basins. Three different mesozooplankton communities were differentiated according to their faunistic composition and are discussed in context with the major water masses: Polar Surface Water, Atlantic Layer and Arctic Deep Water.  相似文献

Fishing has wide-ranging impacts on marine ecosystems. One of the most pervasive signs of intensive fishing is "fishing down the food web", with landings increasingly dominated by smaller species from lower trophic levels. Decreases in the trophic level of landings are assumed to reflect those in fish communities, because size-selective mortality causes decreases in the relative abundance of larger species and in mean body size within species. However, existing analyses of fishing impacts on the trophic level of fish communities have focused on the role of changes in species composition rather than size composition. This will provide a biased assessment of the magnitude of fishing impacts, because fishes feed at different trophic levels as they grow. Here, we combine body size versus trophic level relationships for North Sea fishes (trophic level assessed using nitrogen stable-isotope analysis) with species-size-abundance data from two time-series of trawl-survey data (whole North Sea 1982-2000, central and northern North Sea 1925-1996) to predict long-term trends in the trophic structure of the North Sea fish community. Analyses of the 1982-2000 time-series showed that there was a slow but progressive decline in the trophic level of the demersal community, while there was no trend in the trophic level of the combined pelagic and demersal community. Analyses of the longer time-series suggested that there was no trend in the trophic level of the demersal community. We related temporal changes in trophic level to temporal changes in the slopes of normalised biomass size-spectra (which theoretically represent the trophic structure of the community), mean log2 body mass and mean log2 maximum body mass. While the size-based metrics of community structure showed long-term trends that were consistent with the effects of increased fishery exploitation, these trends were only correlated with trophic level for the demersal community. Our analysis suggests that the effects of fishing on the trophic structure of fish communities can be much more complex than previously assumed. This is a consequence of sampled communities not reflecting all the pathways of energy transfer in a marine ecosystem and of the absence of historical data on temporal and spatial changes in the trophic level of individuals. For the North Sea fish community, changes in size structure due to the differential effects of fishing on species and populations with different life histories are a stronger and more universal indicator of fishing effects than changes in mean trophic level.  相似文献

The species composition of coral communities has shifted in many areas worldwide through the relative loss of important ecosystem engineers such as highly branched corals, which are integral in maintaining reef biodiversity. We assessed the degree to which the performance of recently recruited branching corals was influenced by corallivory, competition, sedimentation, and the interactions between these factors. We also explored whether the species-specific influence of these biotic and abiotic constraints helps to explain recent shifts in the coral community in lagoons of Moorea, French Polynesia. Population surveys revealed evidence of a community shift away from a historically acroporid-dominated community to a pocilloporid- and poritid-dominated community, but also showed that the distribution and abundance of coral taxa varied predictably with location in the lagoon. At the microhabitat scale, branching corals grew mainly on dead or partially dead massive Porites ("bommies"), promontories with enhanced current velocities and reduced sedimentation. A demographic study revealed that growth and survival of juvenile Pocillopora verrucosa and Acropora retusa, the two most common branching species of each taxon, were affected by predation and competition with vermetid gastropods. By 24 months of age, 20-60% of juvenile corals suffered partial predation by corallivorous fishes, and injured corals experienced reduced growth and survival. A field experiment confirmed that partial predation by corallivorous fishes is an important, but habitat-modulated, constraint for branching corals. Competition with vermetid gastropods reduced growth of both branching species but unexpectedly also provided an associational defense against corallivory. Overall, the impact of abiotic constraints was habitat-specific and similar for Acropora and Pocillopora, but biotic interactions, especially corallivory, had a greater negative effect on Acropora than Pocillopora, which may explain the local shift in coral community composition.  相似文献

The abundance, biomass and mean weight of macrofauna in the Carson Canyon region (Lat. 45°30N, Long. 48°40W) of the Grand Banks were estimated from 40 quantitative infaunal samples taken at 15 stations in June 1980. In contrast to other areas, there were no significant differences in these values between samples taken in and outside of the canyon. Abundance ( = 716 individuals m-2), biomass ( = 10.9 gm-2), and mean weight ( = 0.03 g individual-1) displayed no consistent relationship with depth, but stations grouped according to sediment type had differing dominant taxa. Biomass and abundance at the edge of the Grand Banks are unexpectedly low. Larger animals, including fishes, that forage there must depend more on pelagic than on benthic food sources.  相似文献

Mangrove estuaries in the Solomon Islands are well developed, but are small and isolated from each other by extensive fringing coral reef lagoons. A total of 136 species of fish were recorded from 13 estuaries (6 estuaries in Kolombangara, 3 in New Georgia, 3 in Rendova and 1 in the Florida Group); none contained more than 50 species. Sampling took place during five 3 wk expeditions from 1986 to 1988. The mean biomass of 11.60 g m–2 is comparable with that of similar estuaries in northern Australia. Cluster-analysis revealed two patterns of fish species composition. The first group, in which Gobiidae were the most numerous taxon, inhabited soft, muddy-bottom estuaries. The second group, dominated by Pomacentridae, lived in hard-bottom, log-strewn estuaries. The role of the estuaries as nursery grounds for coral reef species was assessed and found to be insignificant, but they are used as feeding grounds by mobile piscivorous species. The species composition of Solomon Island estuaries was compared with that of other Indo-Pacific estuaries. No endemic species were found and the fauna is typical of such mangrove systems throughout the region. However, several taxa that are common in Australia or New Guinea were not found, notably Ariidae, Centropomidae,Pomadasys, and Sciaenidae. These absentees, and the fish fauna as a whole, are discussed in relation to the position of the Solomon Islands at the western edge of the Pacific Plate, the effects of deep-ocean trenches, the recent geological origin of the islands, and possible methods of colonisation from nearby mangroves in Australia and New Guinea. The importance of larval durations and dispersal to colonisation are discussed in relation to oceanic circulation patterns in the Solomon Sea.  相似文献

Quantitative (0.25 m2) samples of macrofaunal (>1.0 mm) invertebrates were taken in each season from one habitat of an intertidal sandbar in the North Inlet estuary near Georgetown, South Carolina, USA. During all seasons the community inhabiting the sample site was numerically dominated by two species of haustoriid amphipods (Acanthohaustorius millsi and Pseudohaustorius caroliniensis). Seasonal changes at the community level were clearly controlled by the population dynamics of the numerically dominant species, and qualitative information on life histories was important to the interpretation of analyses' results. This work was supported by the Environmental Technology Center of Martin Marietta Corporation and the Belle W. The vertical distribution, abundance and community structure of oncaeid copepods were investigated in the Oyashio region, western subarctic Pacific. Samples were collected with a 0.10 mm mesh closing type net from five discrete layers down to a maximum depth of 2,000 m in September and December 1996 and in April and October 1997. The copepods were widely distributed from epipelagic to bathypelagic zones, and showed prominent peaks of abundance above the thermocline and/or between 250 and 1,000 m depth. Standing stocks of total oncaeid copepods ranged from 1.5 to 2.5×105 inds m–2 at 0–2,000 m in the water column, which are the same order of magnitudes as those reported in tropical, subtropical and polar regions by previous workers. A total of 38 species and two forms belonging to the genera Oncaea, Triconia, Spinoncaea, Conaea and Epicalymma, and two provisionally classified species of the family Oncaeidae were identified in this study. Of these, 14 species have already been recorded from the eastern subarctic Pacific. Several warm-water species were also found in December 1996 and/or October 1997, when the effect of warm-core rings originating from the Kuroshio Current was evident in the epipelagic zone. Dominant species throughout the whole water column were T. borealis, T. canadensis, O. grossa, O. parila, O. rimula, O. lacinia, Epicalymma spp. and Oncaea sp. A, and these eight species together always made up about half of the total oncaeid numbers. Community analysis revealed that species composition in epipelagic and upper mesopelagic zones varied temporally due to the changes of hydrographic conditions, whereas those in lower mesopelagic and bathypelagic zones were relatively stable, reflecting the constancy of deep environments.Communicated by O. Roads,Interrupted Dispersal, and Genetic Diversity in Timber Rattlesnakes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract: Anthropogenic habitat modification often creates barriers to animal movement, transforming formerly contiguous habitat into a patchwork of habitat islands with low connectivity. Roadways are a feature of most landscapes that can act as barriers or filters to migration among local populations. Even small and recently constructed roads can have a significant impact on population genetic structure of some species, but not others. We developed a research approach that combines fine‐scale molecular genetics with behavioral and ecological data to understand the impacts of roads on population structure and connectivity. We used microsatellite markers to characterize genetic variation within and among populations of timber rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus) occupying communal hibernacula (dens) in regions bisected by roadways. We examined the impact of roads on seasonal migration, genetic diversity, and gene flow among populations. Snakes in hibernacula isolated by roads had significantly lower genetic diversity and higher genetic differentiation than snakes in hibernacula in contiguous habitat. Genetic‐assignment analyses revealed that interruption to seasonal migration was the mechanism underlying these patterns. Our results underscore the sizeable impact of roads on this species, despite their relatively recent construction at our study sites (7 to 10 generations of rattlesnakes), the utility of population genetics for studies of road ecology, and the need for mitigating effects of roads.  相似文献

Fire, elephants, and frost are important disturbance factors in many African savannas, but the relative magnitude of their effects on vegetation and their interactions have not been quantified. Understanding how disturbance shapes savanna structure and composition is critical for predicting changes in tree cover and for formulating management and conservation policy. A simulation model was used to investigate how the disturbance regime determines vegetation structure and composition in a mixed Kalahari sand woodland savanna in western Zimbabwe. The model consisted of submodels for tree growth, tree damage caused by disturbance, mortality, and recruitment that were parameterized from field data collected over a two-year period. The model predicts that, under the current disturbance regime, tree basal area in the study area will decline by two-thirds over the next two decades and become dominated by species unpalatable to elephants. Changes in the disturbance regime are predicted to greatly modify vegetation structure and community composition. Elephants are the primary drivers of woodland change in this community at present-day population densities, and their impacts are exacerbated by the effects of fire and frost. Frost, in particular, does not play an important role when acting independently but appears to be a key secondary factor in the presence of elephants and/or fire. Unlike fire and frost, which cannot suppress the woodland phase on their own in this ecosystem, elephants can independently drive the vegetation to the scrub phase. The results suggest that elephant and fire management may be critical for the persistence of certain woodland communities within dry-season elephant habitats in the eastern Kalahari, particularly those dominated by Brachystegia spiciformis and other palatable species.  相似文献

Multiple factors linked through complex networks of interaction including fertilization, aboveground biomass, and litter control the diversity of plant communities. The challenge of explaining plant diversity is to determine not only how each individual mechanism directly influences diversity, but how those mechanisms indirectly influence diversity through interactions with other mechanisms. This approach is well established in the study of plant species richness, but surprisingly little effort has been dedicated toward understanding the controls of community evenness, despite the recognition that this aspect of diversity can influence a variety of critical ecosystem functions. Similarly, studies of diversity have predominantly focused on the influence of shoot, rather than root, biomass, despite the fact that the majority of plant biomass is belowground in many natural communities. In this study, I examine the roles of belowground biomass, live aboveground biomass, litter, and light availability in controlling the species richness and evenness of a rough fescue grassland community using structural equation modeling. Litter was the primary mechanism structuring grassland diversity, with both richness and evenness declining with increasing litter cover. There were few relationships between shoot biomass, shading, and diversity, and more importantly, no relationship between root biomass and diversity. The lack of relationship between root biomass and species richness and evenness suggests that, even though root competition in grasslands is intense, belowground interactions may not play an important role in structuring community diversity or composition.  相似文献

The biological effects of a low-volume domestic sewage discharge were studied near Wilson Cove, San Clemente Island, California (USA), from February to June, 1972. There were fewer species and less cover near the outfall (7 macro-invertebrates, 17.6%; 13 macrophytes, 91.7%) than in nearby “unpolluted” control areas (9 macroinvertebrates, 9.2%; 30 macrophytes, 103.4%). The outfall biota was less diverse than that of the controls, as shown by 5 different diversity indices. A great reduction in community stratification (spatial heterogeneity) and, hence, community complexity occurred near the outfall; this reduction in stratification was primarilly due to the absence of Egregia laevigata, Halidrys dioica, Sargassum agardhianum and Phyllospadix torreyi. These were replaced in the mid-intertidal near the outfall by a low turf of blue-green algae, Ulva californica, Gelidium pusillum and small Pterocladia capillacea, and in the lower intertidal by Serpulorbis squamigerus covered with Corallina officinalis Var. chilensis. A statistically-based determination of assemblages or groups of organisms (i.e., cluster analysis) revealed 3 discrete outfall and 3 discrete control area groups; 3 assemblages contained samples from both areas. The distributional patterns of these groups indicate that near the outfall the degree of dilution of discharged sewage is more important in regulating zonation than is tidal height. The enhancement of the suspension feeder Serpulorbis squamigerus and the omnivores Ligia occidentalis, Pachygrapsus crassipes and Anthopleura elegantissima in the outer fringe of the outfall plume hypothetically is due to their ability to utilize sewage as a food source. A critical effect of the outfall may be to decrease environmental stability thereby favoring rapid-colonizers and more sewage-tolerant organisms. The outfall macrophytes were characterized by relatively higher net primary productivities, smaller growth forms, simpler and shorter life histories, and most were components of early successional stages.  相似文献
