This study forms part of the Action Plan for the Conservation of Marine Vegetation in the Mediterranean SEa (United Nation Environmental Program). It was carried out in June 2000 in the Farwà Lagoon, Libya. The mapping of the main benthic vegetation was achieved by compiling the field observations (transect method), and remote sensing of SPOT satellite images. The phytobenthos in the Farwà lagoon covers an area of 1820 ha (65%). Three benthic macrophyte species dominate, namely the marine phanerogamsCymodocea nodosa andPosidonia oceanica, and the algaCaulerpa prolifera. DeadPosidonia oceanica leaves (litter) form veritable mounds in the vicinity of the openings leading to open sea. These leaves, which come from the coastal sea, are brought into the lagoon by currents and tides; their decomposition will lead to high oxygen consumption and the release of hydrogen sulphide. The phenological data ofPosidonia oceanica shoots sampled in the lagoon are similar to those from other stations in the Mediterranean. Conversely, the lepidochronological parameters of shoots sampled in the central part of the lagoon exhibit values that are substantially higher than those generally recorded in the Mediterranean. The mean number of leaves produced annually is 9.9 (mean value for the Mediterranean: 7.5) and the rhizome growth rate is of 35.7 mm.yr−1 (mean value for the Mediterranean: 7.5 mm.yr−1). This hypersaline environment would seem to provide optimum growth conditions for the speciesPosidonia oceanica.  相似文献

Seagrass colonise new areas via the dispersion of seeds or vegetative fragments. Independent of the manner of colonization, habitat requirements need to be met for the successful establishment of seagrasses. Here we report on the colonization process of Posidonia oceanica in a highly disturbed area: a gas pipeline trench at Capo Feto (SW Sicily, Italy). A trench dredged through a P. oceanica bed was back-filled with rubble added from dump barges leading to the formation of a series of rubble mounds on the seabed. Over time, these mounds became colonised with P. oceanica. I>. In order to understand the pattern of P. oceanica colonization, shoot density was quantified over 3 years (2001–2003) on different mound locations (crests, sides, valleys). Seagrass coalescence was observed only in valleys between mounds where shoot density averaged 133±50 shoots m−2, while values for sides and crests were significantly lower (30.5±14 and 5.8±2.6 shoots m−2, respectively). Although sediment accumulated on both crests and valleys, a significantly thicker sediment layer was recorded in the valleys (9.8±0.4 cm) than on crests (1.1±0.2). Plaster dissolution rate (an indicator of the hydrodynamic regime) tended to decrease from crests to valleys but even in the valleys, the currents were still higher than in the adjacent vegetated control location. This pattern was constant over time and depths. This is the first study to report on P. oceanica vegetative recruitment on artificial rubble after a disturbance event. It appears that the valleys between the rubble mounds are suitable for seagrass recruitment as sediment deposited between the rubble provides the necessary resources for plant settlement and growth. Once the seagrass patches are established, they may start a positive feedback of attenuation of currents, sediment accumulation and seagrass patch expansion.  相似文献

A new strain of Trametes hirsuta was found to oxidize various cotton flavonoids. Here we show that laccases of this organism were responsible for oxidation of the flavonoids morin, luteolin, rutin and quercetin. Out of two laccases produced by T. hirsuta (60.7 and 51.0 kDa) the more prominent 60.7 kDa laccase was purified and showed K m and k cat values of 75.5, 20.9 and 49.4 μM and 72.5, 96.3 and 32.7 s−1, hours on ABTS, syringaldazide and DMP, respectively. Pretreatment of cotton with the T. hirsuta laccase resulted in a whiteness increase of 8.5%.  相似文献

The filtration activity of the Mediterranean mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis, was assessed under different concentrations and compositions of seston by using a new automated image acquisition and analysis system. This approach allowed for frequent and simultaneous measurements of valve gape and exhalant siphon area. Filtration rates were measured through clearance measurements whereas pumping rates were measured using hot-film probes. The average filtration rate (17.5 l g h−1 DW−1 for a 0.36 g DW mussel) recorded during the present study was higher than those available for Mytilus edulis when standardized to flesh dry weight but almost equivalent (17.5 l h−1 g DW−1 for a 53 mm shell length mussel) to those rates when standardized to shell length. Immediately after the addition of algal cells (Isochrysis galbana; 4.5 μm in size), valve gape, exhalant siphon area and filtration rate increased quickly as mussels reached their maximum filtration activity. These three parameters then gradually decreased until complete closure of the shell. The algal cell concentration inducing this transition was close to 800 cells ml−1 and 0.5 μg Chl a l−1. When algal concentration was maintained above this threshold by successive algal additions, both valve gape and exhalant siphon area remained maximal. Temporal changes in the exhalant siphon area were continuous as opposed to those of valve gape. Therefore, despite the significant correlation between these two parameters, valves and siphon were sometimes dissociated due to a reduction of the area or even a closure of the exhalant siphon while the valves remained open. The velocity of exhaled water tended to be constant irrespective of exhalant siphon area and thus pumping rates were a linear function of exhalant siphon area. Consequently, reductions in exhalant siphon area and pumping rate were almost similar in M. galloprovincialis. Our results thus clearly support the hypothesis that exhalant siphon area constitutes a better proxy of pumping rate than valve gape as already suggested for Mytilus edulis. Finally, the high filtration rates measured during the present study together with the high concentrations of inorganic matter (> 40 mg DW l−1) requested to alter those rates suggest that the studied mussels were well adapted to oligotrophic waters featuring strong hydrodynamism and frequent sediment resuspension events.  相似文献

The levels of extractable aluminum (Al) in soils of tea plantations, Al concentrations in tea leaves and the impact of nitrogen fertilization on these two parameters were investigated. In addition, the properties of soils from tea plantations were compared to those from soils of adjacent non-tea fields to evaluate the effect of land use conversion (from non-tea soils to tea soils). Exchangeable Al (extracted in 1 mol l−1 KCl) ranged from 0.03 to 7.32 cmolc kg−1 in 94 tea fields and decreased rapidly with increasing soil pH. In comparison with non-tea soils, tea soils had a significantly lower pH and exchangeable Mg2+ concentration but higher organic matter contents and exchangeable K+ concentration. Contents of extractable Al were not different (P > 0.05) between these two soils. The concentrations of Al in mature tea leaves correlated significantly with exchangeable Al in soil samples taken at a depth of 20–40 cm and with exchangeable Al saturations in soil sampled at␣depths of 0–20 and 20–40 cm. In the pot experiment, nitrogen fertilization significantly increased extractable Al levels but decreased soil pH and the levels of exchangeable base cations. Nevertheless, the levels of Al in mature leaves and young shoots were significantly reduced by the application of large amounts of N fertilizer.  相似文献

The effects of local-scale anthropogenic disturbance from active drilling platforms on epibenthic megafaunal abundance, diversity and assemblage pattern were examined in two west of Shetland hydrocarbon fields at 420 and 508 m water depth. These areas were selected to include a range of disturbance regimes and contrasting faunal assemblages associated with different temperature regimes. Remotely operated vehicle (ROV) video provided high-resolution megafaunal abundance and diversity data, which were related to the extent of visible disturbance from drilling spoil. These data, in conjunction with a study deeper in the Faroe-Shetland Channel, have allowed comparison of the effects of disturbance on megabenthos across a range of sites. Disturbance to megafaunal assemblages was found to be high within 50 m of the source of drill spoil and in areas where spoil was clearly visible on the seabed, with depressed abundances (Foinaven 1,900 individuals ha−1; Schiehallion 2,178 individuals ha−1) and diversity (H′ = 1.75 Foinaven; 1.12 Schiehallion) as a result of smothering effects. These effects extended to around 100 m from the source of disturbance, although this was variable, particularly with current regime and nature of drilling activity. Further from the source of disturbance, megafaunal assemblages became more typical of the background area with increased diversity (H′ = 2.02 Foinaven; 1.77 Schiehallion) and abundance (Foinaven 16,484 individuals ha−1; Schiehallion 5,477 individuals ha−1). Visible effects on megafaunal assemblages as a result of seabed drilling were limited in extent although assemblage responses were complex, being controlled by differing effects to individual species often based on their motility.  相似文献

The feeding ecology of Sesarma plicata (Grapsidae: Sesarminae), the most abundant crab species in a mangrove forest dominated by Kandelia candel at Jiulongjiang Estuary, China, was investigated through field and laboratory experiments. Feeding preference and consumption rates were determined on mature, senescent and decomposed leaves of Kandelia candel, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza and Aegiceras corniculatum. In the laboratory, S. plicata preferred leaves of K. candel over those of B. gymnorrhiza and A. corniculatum, and consumed significantly more decomposed leaves than mature and senescent ones, irrespective of crab size. Field experiments with limited power failed to reveal detectable species preferences despite more consumption of K. candel, but decomposed leaves of each species were again preferred. Leaf characteristics associated with preference changed with plant species and leaf state. Low tannins and high water content characterized the preference for decomposed state of leaves. Species preference was significantly and negatively related to crude fibers and C:N ratios for mature leaves, and crude fiber for senescent leaves, but significantly and positively related to water content for decomposed leaves. Leaf consumption rates averaged for all leaf categories from laboratory no-choice feeding experiments were 0.101, 0.055 and 0.017 gDW ind−1 d−1 for large, medium and small crabs, respectively. In this forest, mean density of S. plicata was 20.5 ind m−2 as assessed by a manual catching method. Leaf litter removal rate during neap tides by sesarmid crabs was about 1.33 gDW m−2 d−1 in April 2006. The leaves removed by crabs were grazed on the sediment surface or taken into crab burrows, shredded and stored before being eaten.  相似文献

The copepod community observed during an 18-month period at the mouth of eutrophic Kingston Harbour, Jamaica, was dominated by small species of Parvocalanus, Temora, Oithona, and Corycaeus. Mean copepod biomass was 22.1 mg AFDW m−3 (331 mg m−2). Annual production was 1679 kJ m−2, partitioned as 174 kJ m−2 naupliar, 936 kJ m−2 copepodite, 475 kJ m−2 egg and 93 kJ m−2 exuvial production. All nauplii, most copepodites and many adults, equivalent to half of the biomass and production, were missed by a standard 200-μm plankton net, emphasizing the importance of nauplii and small species in secondary production estimates. The evidence suggests that growth rates and production are generally not food limited, and we speculate that size-selective predation shapes the structure of the harbour community. Biomass and production are higher than previous estimates for tropical coastal waters, but comparable to other eutrophic tropical embayments and many productive temperate ecosystems. Far from being regions of low productivity, tropical zooplankton communities may have significant production and deserve greater research attention than they currently receive. A temperature-dependent growth model is presented for nauplii and copepodites of the estuarine calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa from southern Europe (Portugal). Development was followed from egg to adult in the laboratory at four temperatures (10, 15, 18 and 22°C) and under saturating food conditions (>1,000 μg C l−1). Development times versus incubation temperature were fitted to a Belehradek’s function, showing that development times decreased with increasing incubation temperature: at 10°C, A. tonsa need 40.3 days to reach adult stage, decreasing to 8.9 days when reared at 22°C. ANCOVA (homogeneity of slopes) showed that temperature (P<0.001) and growth phase (P<0.01) had a significant effect on the growth rate. Over the range of temperatures tested in this study, highest weight-specific growth rates were found during naupliar development (NI–NVI) and varied from 0.185 day−1 (10°C) to 0.880 day−1 (22°C) with a Q 10 equal to 3.66. During copepodite growth (CI–CV), the weight-specific growth rates ranged from 0.125 day−1 (10°C) to 0.488 day−1 (22°C) with a Q 10 equal to 3.12. The weight-specific growth rates (g) followed temperature (T) by a linear relationship and described as ln g=−2.962+0.130 T (r 2=0.99, P<0.001) for naupliar stages and ln g=−3.134+0.114T (r 2=0.97, P<0.001) for copepodite stages. By comparing in situ growth rates (juvenile growth and fecundity) for A. tonsa taken from the literature with the temperature-dependent growth model defined here we suggest that the adult females of A. tonsa are more frequently food limited than juveniles.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution of mercury compounds in marine sediments and mussel tissues collected in the lagoon of Bizerte, Tunisia, during two seasons (summer and winter). Inorganic mercury (Hg2+) concentrations in sediments were found to be highly variable, ranging from 0.04 nmol.g1 to 3.22 nmol.g−1 (dry weight) with a mean value of 0.52 nmol.g−1. Anthropogenic sources of Hg2+, most probably metallurgy or tire production industries, have been evidenced. The mean concentration of monomethylmercury (MeHg+) in the surface sediments is 2.32 pmol g−1 ranging from below the detection limit (0.45 pmol.g−1) to 14.6 pmol.g−1. No significant variation was observed between winter and summer seasons for both mercury species concentration in the sediments. The Hg2+ concentrations in mussel tissues are also variable, ranging from 0.007 to 1.347 nmol.g−1 (dry weight). The mean concentration is 0.70 nmol.g−1. In these tisssues, Hg2+ is generally the major compound, making up ca. 88% of total mercury concentrations. However, methylmercury concentrations are significant and homogeneous, ranging from 62 to 121 pmol.g−1 (mean 96 pmol.g−1). The results suggest that a fraction of the inorganic mercury load in the sediments of the lagoon undergoes methylation pathways. MeHg+ produced is assimilated in the mussels more readily than Hg2+.  相似文献

While it is known that Antarctic sea ice biomass and productivity are highly variable over small spatial and temporal scales, there have been very few measurements from eastern Antarctic. Here we attempt to quantify the biomass and productivity and relate patterns of variability to sea ice latitude ice thickness and vertical distribution. Sea ice algal biomass in spring in 2002, 2003 and 2004 was low, in the range 0.01–8.41 mg Chl a m−2, with a mean and standard deviation of 2.08 ± 1.74 mg Chl a m−2 (n = 199). An increased concentration of algae at the bottom of the ice was most pronounced in thicker ice. There was little evidence to suggest that there was a gradient of biomass distribution with latitude. Maximum in situ production in 2002 was approximately 2.6 mg C m−2 h−1 with assimilation numbers of 0.73 mg C (mg Chl a)−1 h−1. Assimilation numbers determined by the 14C incubations in 2002 varied between 0.031 and 0.457 mg C (mg Chl a)−1 h−1. Maximum fluorescence quantum yields of the incubated ice samples in 2002 were 0.470 ± 0.041 with E k indices between 19 and 44 μmol photons m−2 s−1. These findings are consistent with the shade-adapted character of ice algal communities. In 2004 maximum in situ production was 5.9 mg C m−2 h−1 with an assimilation number of 5.4 mg C (mg Chl a)−1 h−1. Sea ice biomass increased with ice thickness but showed no correlation with latitude or the time the ice was collected. Forty-four percent of the biomass was located in bottom communities and these were more commonly found in thicker ice. Surface communities were uncommon.  相似文献

The parsnip webworm, Depressaria pastinacella, specializes on wild parsnip, Pastinaca sativa, and several species of Heracleum, hostplants rich in toxic furanocoumarins. Rates of furanocoumarin metabolism in this species are among the highest known for any insect. Within its native range in Europe, webworms are heavily parasitized by the polyembryonic parasitoid wasp Copidosoma sosares. In this study, we determined whether these parasitoids are exposed to furanocoumarins in host hemolymph, whether they can metabolize furanocoumarins, and whether parasitism influences the ability of webworms to detoxify furanocoumarins. Hemolymph of webworms fed artificial diet containing 0.3 % fresh weight xanthotoxin, a furanocoumarin prevalent in wild parsnip hosts, contained trace amounts of this toxin; as well, hemolymph of webworms consuming P. sativa flowers and fruits contained trace amounts of six of seven furanocoumarins present in the hostplant. Thus, parasitoids likely encounter furanocoumarins in host hemolymph. Assays of xanthotoxin metabolism in C. sosares failed to show any ability to metabolize this compound. Parasitized webworms, collected from populations of Heracleum sphondylium in the Netherlands in 2004, were on average 55 % larger by weight than unparasitized individuals. This weight is inclusive of host and parasitoid masses. Absolute rates of detoxification (nmoles min−1) of five different furanocoumarins were indistinguishable between parasitized and unparasitized ultimate instars, suggesting that the intrinsic rates of metabolism are fixed. Thus, although parasitized larvae are larger, detoxification rates are not commensurate with size; rates in parasitized larvae expressed per gram of larval mass were 25 % lower than in unparasitized larvae.  相似文献

Bacterial abundance, production, and extracellular enzyme activity were determined in the shallow water column, in the epiphytic community of Thalassia testudinum, and at the sediment surface along with total carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in Florida Bay, a subtropical seagrass estuary. Data were statistically reduced by principle components analysis (PCA) and multidimensional scaling and related to T. testudinum leaf total phosphorus content and phytoplankton biomass. Each zone (i.e., pelagic, epiphytic, and surface sediment community) was significantly dissimilar to each other (Global R = 0.65). Pelagic aminopeptidase and sum of carbon hydrolytic enzyme (esterase, peptidase, and α- and β-glucosidase) activities ranged from 8 to 284 mg N m−2 day−1 and 113–1,671 mg C m−2 day−1, respectively, and were 1–3 orders of magnitude higher than epiphytic and sediment surface activities. Due to the phosphorus-limited nature of Florida Bay, alkaline phosphatase activity was similar between pelagic (51–710 mg P m−2 day−1) and sediment (77–224 mg P m−2 day−1) zones but lower in the epiphytes (1.1–5.2 mg P m−2 day−1). Total (and/or organic) C (111–311 g C m−2), N (9.4–27.2 g N m−2), and P (212–1,623 mg P m−2) content were the highest in the sediment surface and typically the lowest in the seagrass epiphytes, ranging from 0.6 to 8.7 g C m−2, 0.02–0.99 g N m−2, and 0.5–43.5 mg P m−2. Unlike nutrient content and enzyme activities, bacterial production was highest in the epiphytes (8.0–235.1 mg C m−2 day−1) and sediment surface (11.5–233.2 mg C m−2 day−1) and low in the water column (1.6–85.6 mg C m−2 day−1). At an assumed 50% bacterial growth efficiency, for example, extracellular enzyme hydrolysis could supply 1.8 and 69% of epiphytic and sediment bacteria carbon demand, respectively, while pelagic bacteria could fulfill their carbon demand completely by enzyme-hydrolyzable organic matter. Similarly, previously measured T. testudinum extracellular photosynthetic carbon exudation rates could not satisfy epiphytic and sediment surface bacterial carbon demand, suggesting that epiphytic algae and microphytobenthos might provide usable substrates to support high benthic bacterial production rates. PCA revealed that T. testudinum nutrient content was related positively to epiphytic nutrient content and carbon hydrolase activity in the sediment, but unrelated to pelagic variables. Phytoplankton biomass correlated positively with all pelagic components and sediment aminopeptidase activity but negatively with epiphytic alkaline phosphatase activity. In conclusion, seagrass production and nutrient content was unrelated to pelagic bacteria activity, but did influence extracellular enzyme hydrolysis at the sediment surface and in the epiphytes. This study suggests that seagrass-derived organic matter is of secondary importance in Florida Bay and that bacteria rely primarily on algal/cyanobacteria production. Pelagic bacteria seem coupled to phytoplankton, while the benthic community appears supported by epiphytic and/or microphytobenthos production.  相似文献

The diatom Cylindrotheca closterium was exposed to transient light- and osmotic conditions as occur during its tidal emersion. The objective was to analyze how this simulated emersion contributes to the production of active oxygen species (AOS) and via this, to oxidative cell damage. Light- and salinity conditions were varied in factorial combination: low light (no UVB) or high light (unweighted UVB-dose rates of respectively 0.01; 0.07; 0.24; 1.03 W m−2) at normal (30 psu) or high salinity (60 psu). UVB (0.01–0.24 W m−2) and high salinity had a significant, negative effect on the photosynthetic efficiencies ΔF/F m’ (steady-state quantum yield) and F v/F m (maximum yield). UVB at 1.03 W m−2 (15 kJ m−2 d−1) almost arrested electron transport. At ecologically relevant UVB levels, i.e. below 0.24 W m−2 (≈3.4 kJ m−2 d−1) with UVB:PAR<0.4:100 (PAR photosynthetically active radiation) only dynamic photoinhibition was observed (protection via heat dissipation). Non-photochemical quenching was positively correlated with the de-epoxidation of diadinoxanthin (DD) to diatoxanthin (DT). A decreasing ratio DT/(DD+DT) after 4 h of UVB at >0.07 W m−2 and at 60 psu indicated a reversal of the diatom xanthophyll cycle (diminished photoprotection) which may be caused by an enhanced AOS production. Oxidative stress and -damage to C. closterium cells were assessed applying fluorescent indicator dyes, via confocal microscopy and quantitative image analysis. AOS production rates (cellular DCF fluorescence) were stimulated by UV, and were ~50% higher at 60 psu. AOS production decreased with an increasing pre-exposure (0–4 h) to normal UVB (0.24 W m−2), which indicated a stimulation of the antioxidative defence. Non-protein thiols (indicator CMF) and glutathione pools (HPLC-analyzed) decreased with UVB-dose rates (0.01–0.24 W m−2), most likely due to AOS-mediated thiol oxidation. Hypersalinity (60 psu) and UVB (0.01–0.24 W m−2) caused membrane depolarization (dye DIBAC4(3)) and phospholipid hydrolysis (phospholipase A2 dye: bis-BODIPY FL-C11-PC). AOS production may have diminished the membrane polarity, and peroxidized the membrane lipids (HPLC-analyzed malondialdehyde) which enhanced PLA2 activity. The dyes indicated an increased oxidative (lipid) damage at a 15% inhibition of photosynthesis in this diatom, at UVB levels and salinities that can be expected in situ during its periodic tidal emersion.  相似文献

This work analyses effects of recent variations in the tidal inundation frequency in a mangrove ecosystem in the Bragança peninsula, North Brazil, and its implications for land occupation and use. Field data, time series of remote sensing images and local legislation were analysed focusing on the potential socio-economic impact of a changing environmental setting due to a rise in relative sea level. In the investigated period (1972–1997), vegetation changes along the coastline indicate net losses of mangrove coverage. In the central part of the peninsula, a topographically higher herbaceous plain constituting part of a farm presents an active progression of mangrove forest into an area previously dominated by grasses and herbs. This area measured 8.8 km2 in 1972 but was gradually reduced to 5.6 km2 in 1997, while progressively replaced by a monospecific stand of the black mangrove,Avicennia germinans. A linear extrapolation indicates that the elevated plain may be completely covered by mangrove by 2035. Current Brazilian legislation prohibits the extraction of mangrove trees without an officially approved management plan. Thus, the usable area of the farm has suffered a reduction by ca. 36% over 25 yr and we predict that is could be entirely replaced by mangroves in the next 35 yr. In this case study, legislation and ecosystem characteristics are analysed and a management plan discussed which could represent income alternatives for affected resource users at the local and regional level.  相似文献

Summary. In amphibians and fishes, evidence is increasing that chemical cues from injured conspecifics can play a role in the chemical labelling and learned recognition of unfamiliar predators. In this laboratory study, we tested the prediction that prior chemical exposure to a non-native predator feeding on conspecific tadpoles will subsequently allow tadpoles of the common toad (Bufo bufo) to recognize the chemical cues specifically released by this starved predator. Furthermore, we investigated the vulnerability of this chemically-mediated process to herbicide contamination. With these aims in view, groups of tadpoles were kept either unexposed or exposed for ten days to chemical cues from Turkish crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus) previously fed on tadpoles, both in uncontaminated water and in the presence of four sublethal concentrations of amitrole (0.01, 0.1, 1 and 10 mg.l−1). We then assessed the effects of the six conditioning treatments on general activity and behavioural response to chemical cues from starved crayfish. Larval treatments did not affect the general activity of the tadpoles. By contrast, the treatments had significant effects on the behavioural response to the test solution prepared form starved crayfish. The only tadpoles to show an antipredator behavioural response to the chemical stimulation from starved crayfish belonged to the groups derived from chemical exposure to tadpole-fed crayfish in uncontaminated water and in contaminated water with the lowest concentration of amitrole (0.01 mg.l−1). Conversely, this chemical stimulation produced no behavioural change in the control group or in the groups derived from exposure to tadpole-fed crayfish in contaminated water containing 0.1, 1 and 10 mg.l−1 of amitrole. This study demonstrates that chemical cues released during the predator’s feeding activity can subsequently be used by common toad tadpoles in the recognition of an unfamiliar predator. In addition, our results show that the presence of sublethal amitrole concentrations can impair this recognition process. Such a pesticide effect might be especially detrimental for amphibian populations threatened by invasive predators.  相似文献

Oxygen and pH microelectrodes were used to investigate the microenvironment of the planktonic foraminifer Orbulina universa and its dinoflagellate endosymbionts. A diffusive boundary layer surrounds the foraminiferal shell and limits the O2 and proton transport from the shell to the ambient seawater and vice versa. Due to symbiont photosynthesis, high O2 concentrations of up to 206% air saturation and a pH of up to 8.8, i.e. 0.5 pH units above ambient seawater, were measured at the shell surface of the foraminifer at saturating irradiances. The respiration of the host–symbiont system in darkness decreased the O2 concentration at the shell surface to <70% of the oxygen content in the surrounding air-saturated water. The pH at the shell surface dropped to 7.9 in darkness. We measured a mean gross photosynthetic rate of 8.5 ± 4.0 nmol O2 h−1 foraminifer−1. The net photosynthesis averaged 5.3 ± 2.7 nmol O2 h−1. In the light, the calculated respiration rates reached 3.9 ± 1.9 nmol O2 h−1, whereas the dark respiration rates were significantly lower (1.7 ± 0.7 nmol O2 h−1). Experimental light–dark cycles demonstrated a very dynamic response of the symbionts to changing light conditions. Gross photosynthesis versus scalar irradiance curves (P vs E o curves) showed light saturation irradiances (E k) of 75 and 137 μmol photons m−2 s−1 in two O. universa specimens, respectively. No inhibition of photosynthesis was observed at irradiance levels up to 700 μmol photons m−2 s−1. The light compensation point of the symbiotic association was 50 μmol photons m−2 s−1. Radial profile measurements of scalar irradiance (E o) inside the foraminifera showed a slight increase at the shell surface up to 105% of the incident irradiance (E d). To understand natural and anthropic control of mangrove vegetation in the Gulf of Kachchh, a study was undertaken of its vegetation structure. Over 2 years (1999–2000) at three sites, mangrove vegetation was studied, including tree density, tree height, tree girth at breast height (GBH), canopy index, regeneration class and recruitment class, together with physico-chemical characteristics of water and sediment and the textural aspects of sediments. Reflecting the hot, arid hinterland of Gujarat, ambient temperatures and salinities are high in this macrotidal estuary, decreasing somewhat during the monsoon. The littoral soil supporting the mangrove is abundant in silty loam, silty clay and slity clay loam. The density of mature trees (Mangrove plants of GBH > 25 cm) ranged from 2088/ha to 3011/ha, the height of the trees ranged from 1.42 m to 9 m and the maximum mean GBH at all three sites was 33 cm, and the mean canopy indices ranged between 4.77 m2 and 10.45 m2. The maximum density of regeneration stages was 100,800/ha while that of recruitment stages was only 3,040/ha. While quite severely impacted by anthropic exploitation at one site, the mangrove ecosystem of Gulf of Kachchh was found to be mainly healthy and supporting associated organisms. The ecological and social role of the mangrove, and the potential for its future conservation are briefly discussed in the light of current legislation.  相似文献

Benthic suspension feeders in shallow waters develop in relation to the food availability and the variation of physical parameters giving rise to complex communities that act as a control factor on the plankton biomass. The aim of the work is to establish the role of the hydrozoan Eudendrium racemosum in the energy transfer from the plankton to the benthos in marine food chains of the North Adriatic Sea. This study highlighted that the hydroid biomass changed over time in relation to temperature and irradiance, and the highest abundance was observed during summer with about 400,000 polyps m−2 (about 19 g C m−2). The population suffered an evident summer decrease in relation to a peak of abundance of its predator, the nudibranch Cratena peregrina, whose adult specimens were able to eat up to 500 polyps day−1 and reached an abundance of 10 individuals m−2. The gut content analysis revealed that the hydroid diet was based on larvae of other benthic animals, especially bivalves and that the amount of ingested preys changed during the year with a peak in summer when it was estimated an average predation rate of 13.7 mg C m−2 day−1. In July, bivalves represented over 60 % of the captured items and about 18 mg C m−2 day−1. Values of biomass of E. racemosum are the highest ever recorded in the Mediterranean Sea, probably supported by the eutrophic conditions of the North Adriatic Sea. Moreover, our data suggest that settling bivalves provide the greater part of the energetic demand of E. racemosum.  相似文献

The abundance and biomass of Corophium multisetosum Stock, 1952 were determined from benthic corer samples collected monthly over 1 yr in the upper reaches of Canal de Mira (Ria de Aveiro, Portugal). Both density and biomass over the sampling period were negatively correlated with water temperature and positively correlated with chlorophyll a concentration in the sediment. C. multisetosum density was significantly negatively correlated with plant biomass and positively correlated with salinity. The nature of the sediment, favourable environmental conditions, high availability of food and low interspecific competition allowed the population to reach a maximal density of 200 × 103 individuals m−2 and a maximal biomass (ash-free dry wt, AFDW) of 62 gAFDW m−2. The population was highly productive, especially during the autumn/winter period. Production, estimated by two different methods (Hynes method: 251 gAFDW m−2 yr−1; Morin–Bourassa method: 308 gDW m−2 yr−1), was much higher than the values reported for other Corophium species. The annual P:Bˉ ratio (10) was high, but similar to values reported for Swedish populations of C. volutator and lower than the values estimated from Mediterranean populations of C. insidiosum.
