Non-indigenous ascidians are known to significantly alter the structure and composition of benthic communities and adversely affect shellfish aquaculture by fouling both the cultured species and the infrastructure. The ability of these species to persist in new locations and their current and potential distributions are dependent upon physiological tolerances to environmental factors and biotic resistance to competition and predation. Despite significant data on global invasion patterns, potential biotic resistance to non-indigenous ascidians is poorly understood. We identified potential predators of four non-indigenous ascidians (Styela clava, Botryllus schlosseri, Botrylloides violaceus, and Didemnum vexillum) in British Columbia (BC), Canada in order to: (1) assess the potential for biotic interference to limit the establishment and/or spread of these ascidian species in BC, and (2) identify candidate species to be used as ascidian biofouling control agents in shellfish aquaculture. Using a series of single- and multiple-choice laboratory experiments, potential benthic predators (including various species of molluscs, echinoderms, and arthropods) were offered non-indigenous ascidians as prey. The sea urchins Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis and Strongylocentrotus franciscanus, the sea stars Dermasterias imbricata and Evasterias troschelii, the nudibranch Hermissenda crassicornis, and the crabs Cancer productus and Carcinus maenas were found to consume one or more species of non-indigenous ascidians in single-choice experiments. However, when provided a choice, all predators chose their respective preferred food over ascidians. Thus, predation alone is unlikely to prevent large-scale establishment and spread of non-indigenous ascidians in BC, but it may have the potential to significantly reduce localized populations of ascidians. Green sea urchins, S. droebachiensis, were found to be efficient grazers of all four ascidian species, consuming 12.7 ± 5.14 cm2 (mean ± SD) of adult B. violaceus over a 3-day period, 15 ± 3.7 juvenile colonies of B. violaceus over a 2-day period, and 63 ± 28.8 juvenile colonies of B. schlosseri over a 2-day period. Using sea urchins as biological control organisms may significantly reduce ascidian fouling in shellfish aquaculture.  相似文献

Phenotypic plasticity could be a key mechanism of successful species invasion. Few studies, however, have evaluated whether a non-indigenous species induces anti-herbivore defenses after its introduction to new habitats. We tested how a non-indigenous (Mastocarpus stellatus) and a native red seaweed (Chondrus crispus) responded to grazing by a periwinkle (Littorina littorea) and an isopod (Idotea granulosa) in Helgoland, Germany. In the donor region of the Mastocarpus population, that is Iceland, the periwinkle is missing, whereas the isopod is present. Our results indicate that Mastocarpus experienced less consumption by Littorina (but not by Idotea) than Chondrus. Moreover, Mastocarpus induced defenses in response to Idotea (but not to Littorina) grazing, whereas Chondrus induced anti-herbivory responses to both species of herbivores. Grazed Mastocarpus grew equally to non-grazed conspecifics, while growth of grazed Chondrus was lower than of ungrazed conspecifics. Hence, the non-indigenous Mastocarpus responded differently to grazing stress than the native Chondrus with respect to anti-herbivory and compensatory responses, which perhaps supported the successful Mastocarpus establishment in a new range.  相似文献

The sympatric species Littorina saxatilis (Olivi), L. obtusata (L.), and L. littorea (L.) from the northeast coast of the USA were examined seasonally for larval trematodes. Snails were collected from two sites in Maine and one in Rhode Island. Eight species of Digenea were found: Microphallus pygmaeus (Levinsen, 1881), Microphallus similis (Jagerskiold, 1900), Microphallus sp., Cryptocotyle lingua (Creplin, 1825), Himasthla sp., Renicola roscovita (Stunkard, 1932), Podocotyle atomon (Rudolphi, 1809), and Cercaria lebouri (Stunkard, 1932). All 8 species were found to infect L. obtusata. Only Cercaria lebouri was absent from L. saxatilis. L. littorea was only infected with three species, M. pygmaeus, Cryptocotyle lingua, and R. roscovita. L. littorea does not appear to be a normal host for M. pygmaeus. Variation in occurrence and incidence of larval trematodes in snails from the three sites was related to the occurrence of the definitive hosts. Different seasonal variations in incidence of C. lingua and M. pygmaeus in L. obtusata and L. saxatilis were probably due to mortality of the snail hosts and the habits of the intermediate and definitive hosts. The incidence of C. lingua increased with increasing host size, but the incidence of M. pygmaeus reached a peak in smaller size classes. Although females were more abundant, significantly more male L. obtusata were infected at one Maine site.  相似文献

Correlations and cross-correlations between forest fires in the province of British Columbia, Canada, and sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean were evaluated. British Columbia has a long Pacific Ocean coastline; given that there may be teleconnections between the province's forest fires and climate variability over the ocean, significant correlations may exist between forest fires and the sea surface temperature of the Pacific Ocean. Fire occurrences and areas burned through lightning-caused and human-caused fires were analyzed against individual 1° × 1° grid cells of anomalies in the sea surface temperature to determine correlations for the period 1950-2006. Significant correlations (p < 0.05) for vast areas of the ocean were found between occurrences of lightning-caused fires and sea surface temperature anomalies for time lags of 1 and 2 years, whereas significant correlations between occurrences of human-caused fires and sea surface temperature anomalies occurred extensively for many time lags. To support the results of this approach, correlations between fire data and the Niño 3.4, Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and Arctic Oscillation indices were tested for the same period. Significant correlations were found between fire occurrences and these indices at certain time lags. Overall, fire occurrence appeared to be more extensively correlated with sea surface temperature anomalies than was area burned. These results support the hypothesis that teleconnections exist between fire activity in British Columbia and sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, and the correlations suggest that linear regression models or other regression techniques may be appropriate for predicting fire severity from the sea surface temperatures of one or more previous years.  相似文献

Chemically mediated alarm reactions of the common periwinkle, Littorina littorea (L.), were studied in laboratory experiments during two consecutive summers, and one intermediate autumn season. Responses to chemical stimuli were detected as crawl-out responses, i.e. movements of snails out of the water. Snails were exposed to extracts of injured conspecifics, extracts of the mussel Modiolus modiolus (L.), and water conditioned by the predatory crab Carcinus maenas (L.), which had been maintained on different diets. In experiments carried out during the summer, a significantly larger number of snails moved out of the water when exposed to chemical stimuli from injured conspecifics, compared to chemical stimuli from injured mussels or filtered seawater. These results suggest that chemical alarm substances are present in L. littorea. Water conditioned by crabs that had been fed L. littorea released significantly more crawl-out responses compared to water conditioned by crabs that had been kept on a fish diet. When tested in autumn, no significant differences were found in responses to the above-mentioned water samples. Crawl-out responses under different light regimes were also investigated. All series of experiments carried out in the dark evoked a higher number of responses compared to series that took place in light. These findings may indicate an adaptation of snails to night-active predators. In total, the current results suggest that a L. littorea diet may chemically “label” the predator crab with snail alarm substances, and that predator-induced responses of L. littorea are actually responses to conspecific alarm substances released from crabs that have been maintained on a L. littorea diet. The response to the alarm signal, however, appears to be dependent on season and light conditions; some ecological implications of these findings are also discussed. We evaluated the effects of potential predators from intertidal habitats on Strongylocentrotus purpuratus survival using laboratory experiments and assessed abundances of main predatory species along the Pacific coast of North America. The interactive effects of urchins’ and predators’ sizes in mediating predation were quantified. Habitat complexity (substrate pits, adult spine canopy) was manipulated to examine its effects on predation of most susceptible individuals (<14 mm). Pachygrapsus crassipes was identified as a major predator of urchins up to ≈30 mm. A positive effect of predator size on consumption of progressively larger urchins was detected, probably due to a mechanical limitation on crabs’ ability to consume large prey. Larger claws of males with respect to females of comparable sizes facilitated the handling of larger prey. Substrate refuges significantly reduced mortality on juvenile urchins. These results show that crab predation may be important in organizing intertidal communities, despite multiple ecological mechanisms promoting sea urchin survival.  相似文献

We surveyed patterns in the relative abundance and size structure of the sea stars Pisaster ochraceus and Evasterias troschelii in five habitat types of varying structural complexity and prey availability (sand/cobble, boulder, and rocky intertidal; pilings; and floating docks) in Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands, Washington. For both species, small sea stars were most abundant in the most structurally complex habitat type (boulder), where they occurred almost exclusively under boulders during low tide. Larger individuals became more abundant as structural complexity decreased, occurring more frequently in open habitat types (rocky shores, pilings, and docks) known to have greater abundances of prey resources. Gull foraging observations and experiments demonstrated that exposed small sea stars of both species were highly vulnerable to predation, suggesting that small sea stars require structural complexity (crevice microhabitat) as a predation refuge. Large sea stars, once attaining a size refuge from predation, appear to migrate to more exposed habitat types with more abundant food resources. These results suggest parallel ontogenetic habitat shifts in two co-occurring consumer species related to a shared predation risk at early life stages and demonstrate how the relative importance of top-down and bottom-up processes may differ with ontogeny.  相似文献

More than 6000 individuals of the snailLittorina littorea L., from 6 different localities on the coast of the German Bay (North Sea), were examined for larval trematodes by crushing their shells, an additional 6000 by isolation in small quantities of sea water. Six species of larval trematodes were found inL. littorea and described: Notocotylid larva —Cercaria lebouri Stunkard, 1932; Cercaria ofHimasthla elongata (Mehlis, 1831); Cercaria ofPodocotyle atomon (Rudolphi, 1802); Cercaria ofRenicola roscovita (Stunkard, 1932) n. comb.; Metacercaria ofMicrophallus pygmaeus (Levinsen, 1881); Cercaria ofCryptocotyle lingua (Creplin, 1825). Considering the large number of investigated snails, the trematode fauna ofL. littorea in this area is assumed to be completely known. The life cycles ofHimasthla elongata andRenicola roscovita are described. Larvae of the different trematode species show differential preferences for distinct size groups of snail hosts. Juvenile snails are not infected. No correlation exists between infection rates and sex of the hosts. Quantitative aspects of multiple infections are calculated and discussed. The incidence of larval trematodes in the investigated localities differs. Information is presented on seasonal variations of infestations and their possible causes.  相似文献

Abstract: We present evidence of the first successful natural spawning of Atlantic salmon (   Salmo salar ) documented on the Pacific coast of North America. Twelve juvenile Atlantic salmon composed of two year classes were captured in the Tsitika River, British Columbia. We analyzed restriction-length polymorphisms of PCR-amplified 5S rDNA and mtDNA to confirm that these individuals were Atlantic salmon. Scale analysis strongly suggested they were the products of natural spawning by feral adults. The gut contents, size, and condition of these individuals suggest that Atlantic salmon are successfully maturing in the Tsitika River, British Columbia. This event has raised concerns that the presence and possible establishment of feral Atlantic salmon may further jeopardize the continued persistence of already fragile native Pacific salmonids through competition for resources and occupation of niches that are currently underutilized.  相似文献

The likely introduction of non-indigenous species into the coastal ecosystems of oceanic islands through live-bait utilizations was studied. A store survey identified the species that are traded as live fishing-bait. Only Polychaeta species were identified as imported live-bait on São Miguel Island and all specimens were identified as Perinereis linea. Reponses to surveys of 77 anglers showed that: 44 % harvest from native sources, 44 % buy live-bait and 12 % do both; 56 % of the anglers’ fish on a weekly basis; 31 % dispose of the bait into the sea. A field survey at five sites where fishing rods are routinely utilized was developed to investigate if the non-indigenous polychaetes sold as fishing-bait are already established in the natural environment of the Azores archipelago. Three species of Nereididae were identified: the native Neanthes nubila and P. oliveirae and the cryptogenic P. cultrifera. The escalating utilization of live-bait argues for a change in the habits of fishermen with respect to the discarding of leftover bait, as the higher the volume of discards the higher becomes the probability of non-indigenous species establishment successes, especially on oceanic islands characterized by vulnerable ecosystems with simpler trophic webs.  相似文献

Antipredator behavior studies generally assess prey responses to single predator species although most real systems contain multiple species. In multi-predator environments prey ideally use antipredator responses that are effective against all predator species, although responses may only be effective against one predator and counterproductive for another. Multi-predator systems may also include introduced predators that the prey did not co-evolve with, so the prey may either fail to recognize their threat (level 1 naiveté), use ineffective responses (level 2 naiveté) or succumb to their superior hunting ability (level 3 naiveté). We analyzed microhabitat selection of an Australian marsupial (koomal, Trichosurus vulpecula hypoleucus) when faced with spatiotemporal differences in the activity/density levels of one native (chuditch, Dasyurus geoffroii) and two introduced predators (red fox, Vulpes vulpes; feral cat, Felis catus). From this, we inferred whether koomal recognized introduced predators as a threat, and whether they minimized predation risk by either staying close to trees and/or using open or dense microhabitats. Koomal remained close to escape trees regardless of the predator species present, or activity/density levels, suggesting koomal employ this behavior as a first line of defense. Koomal shifted to dense cover only under high risk scenarios (i.e., with multiple predator species present at high densities). When predation risk was low, koomal used open microhabitats, which likely provided benefits not associated with predator avoidance. Koomal did not exhibit level 1 naiveté, although further studies are required to determine if they exhibit higher levels of naiveté (2–3) against foxes and cats.  相似文献

The physical factors that constrain the vertical foraging excursions of the keystone predator, the sea star Pisaster ochraceus, hold considerable interest because they indirectly shape the vivid patterns of zonation of rocky shore communities by impeding or enhancing the ability of P. ochraceus to traverse the intertidal zone. In this paper, we describe a study conducted in the Pacific Northwest of North America in which we examined, in the field and laboratory, the abiotic factors that can affect vertical excursions by P. ochraceus. Our field observations revealed that the extreme upward reach and average shore level height reached by P. ochraceus were significantly lower for daylight high tides than nocturnal high tides. Based on diver observations following a severe storm, it would also appear that these diurnal movements can be impeded by freshwater incursions into the intertidal zone; a regularly occurring event in the Pacific Northwest. As part of an experimental investigation into this phenomenon, we observed that sea stars maintained in tall cylindrical aquaria, without tidal flux, remained near the bottom during daylight and moved to the top of the column at night, suggesting that photoperiod alone can influence the cycle of vertical movement. Adding a freshwater layer to the aquaria restricted these vertical excursions. Our results suggest that on rocky coastlines susceptible to fresh water incursions, the suppression of foraging may be an important factor in the spatial and temporal variation in the intensity of predation. Furthermore, given the relative increase in frequency and intensity of freshwater incursions in the Pacific Northwest and the intolerance of P. ochraceus to lowered salinity, there is the long-term potential to significantly alter patterns of species zonation in this essential marine habitat.  相似文献

Predators such as crabs, whelks, and sea stars attack their bivalve prey in different ways, and predator-induced defenses are an important means of protection. The degree to which induced defenses are specific to different predators, however, remains largely unknown. In laboratory experiments (June to August 1998), we raised mussels (Mytilus edulis L.) in the presence of a drilling predator [the whelk Nucella lapillus (L.)] or a crushing predator [the crab Carcinus maenas (L.)] to determine whether induced changes in prey shell thickness, size, or shape occurred and whether changes were predator-specific. Over a 2 month period, juvenile mussels were exposed to waterborne cues from actively feeding crabs or whelks. Mussels produced thicker shell lips in response to both predators relative to control mussels raised in their absence, and the difference was significantly greater in response to whelks than to crabs. Mussels exposed to whelks showed significantly smaller increases in shell length and width and total wet weight than did mussels exposed to crabs. Thus, there may be a trade-off between shell thickness and linear shell growth and a potential delay in attaining a size refuge from predation. Pagurus longicarpus hermit crabs depend on empty gastropod shells for protection against predation. Hermit crabs avoid gastropod shells in which holes have been drilled by naticid gastropods, and hermit crabs forced to occupy drilled shells are more vulnerable to predation by green crabs, Carcinus maenas. In this study, we examined the effect of predator cues on P. longicarpus shell investigation behavior and shell choice. In paired laboratory shell choice trials, we examined hermit crab response to green crab chemical cues. We compared hermit crabs from two sites differing in the percentage of Littorina littorea shells with drill holes. The percentage of time hermit crabs spent occupying intact shells increased significantly in the presence of predator cues. The effect of predator cues on the amount of time hermit crabs spent investigating shells differed between individuals from the two sites. Predator effluent had a marginal effect on the proportion of hermit crabs initially choosing intact shells and within 15 min most hermit crabs in both treatments occupied intact shells due to shell switching. These results indicate that predation cues alter P. longicarpus shell choice behavior favoring intact shells, which provide greater protection. The structuring and organizing effects of apex predators on ecosystems are becoming increasingly well documented. The enhancement of kelp forests via sea otter predation on herbivorous sea urchins is among the earliest and best known examples. This study provides evidence for direct and indirect trophic interactions among sea otters, predatory sea stars, and filter-feeding mussels (Mytilus trossulus) and barnacles (Semibalanus cariosis). In western Massacre Bay at Attu Island (173°E, 53°N), subtidal transects showed sea star body size and biomass density declined markedly between 1983 and 1994 as sea otters reinhabited this area. Mussels and barnacles translocated from the rocky intertidal zone to shallow subtidal habitats to assess loss rates from sea star predation showed lower mortality rates after the arrival of sea otters. Prey mortality rates in subtidal caged controls were consistently low and similar to those of intertidal controls in both years. These findings elucidate a trophic pathway by which sea otters can influence ecosystems separate from the well-known sea otter/sea urchin/macroalgae cascade.  相似文献

Understanding prey response to predators and their utilization of sensory cues to assess local predation risk is crucial in determining how predator avoidance strategies affect population demographics. This study examined the antipredator behaviors of two ecologically similar species of Caribbean coral reef fish, Coryphopterus glaucofraenum and Gnatholepis thompsoni, and characterized their responses to different reef predators. In laboratory assays, the two species of gobies were exposed to predator visual cues (native Nassau grouper predator vs. invasive lionfish predator), damage-released chemical cues from gobies, and combinations of these, along with appropriate controls. Behavioral responses indicate that the two prey species differ in their utilization of visual and chemical cues. Visual cues from predators were decisive for both species’ responses, demonstrating their relative importance in the sensory hierarchy, whereas damage-released cues were a source of information only for C. glaucofraenum. Both prey species could distinguish between native and invasive predators and subsequently altered their antipredator responses.  相似文献

Although experiments have shown that habitat structure may influence the distribution of species and species interactions, these effects are still not commonly integrated into studies of community dynamics. Since habitat structure often varies within and among communities, this may limit our understanding of how various factors influence communities. Here, we examined how mussel bed complexity (the presence and thickness of mussel layers) influenced the persistence of whelks (Nucella emarginata) and interactions with a top predator (ochre sea stars, Pisaster ochraceus) and prey (mussels, Mytilus californianus). Results from a mark?Crecapture experiment indicate that whelk recapture rates are higher in more complex habitats, and laboratory experiments demonstrate that habitat complexity affects whelk feeding, growth, and nonconsumptive interactions with a keystone predator. Habitat complexity therefore has direct effects on species and also may lead to trade-offs among feeding, refuge, and other factors, potentially influencing the distribution of whelks and the effects of both whelks and sea stars on intertidal communities. These results demonstrate that habitat structure may play an important role in intertidal communities and other habitats and should be further considered in the experimental design of future studies of community dynamics.  相似文献

Antarctic limpets, Nacella concinna, from the Admiralty Bay (King George Island, South Shetlands) for at least part of the year (austral winter) co-exist with predatory sea stars Lysasterias sp. Our laboratory and field experiments established that the presence of Lysasterias sp. or its odour had considerable influence upon their behaviour. Limpets’ responses, consisting of shell mushrooming, shell rotation and flight, were distinctly different from their reaction to other stimuli, such as food and conspecific odours, or mechanical stimulation. Moreover, a significant impact of sea star presence on limpets’ activity was observed, with limpets fleeing to a distance of 60 cm from the predator. Such reactions allow limpets to lower the incidence of sea star predation, but at the cost of presumptive disrupting of foraging and an additional energy expended for locomotion. A visible difference was noted between two limpet populations, with the rockpool limpets responding only after physical contact with being touched by a sea star, and the subtidal ones responding at a distance of up to 20 cm.  相似文献

The anti-predator behaviour of Baltic crustacean planktivores was studied in feeding experiments under predation pressure of herring. The experiments were conducted with pelagic mysids: Mysis mixta and Mysis relicta, and with Cercopagis pengoi, a non-indigenous cladoceran, which invaded the Baltic Sea in 1992. Zooplankton was offered as prey. Two kinds of experiments were performed in the absence and presence of chemical predator cues: (1) two-prey experiments with prey, which have poor or good escape responses and all three planktivores and (2) natural prey experiments with mysids in natural zooplankton assemblages. The results showed that all three species reacted to the chemical cue of herring by decreasing their feeding rate and altering prey selection. C. pengoi selected easily captured prey (rotifers) in two-prey experiments under predation risk while selection for any prey was evident in mysids in natural prey experiments only in the absence of predator cues. This indicates that planktivores have different anti-predator strategies, which are modified by their own prey capture abilities. C. pengoi was a very efficient predator on small prey with size-specific prey consumption rate 5 to 18 times the rate of mysids. Results show that the studied planktivores are capable of adjusting their feeding behaviour to decrease their conspicuousness in order to increase survival under predation risk. Further, results support the view that C. pengoi has adapted well to the Baltic ecosystem, sharing food niche with pelagic mysids and most probably having a strong influence on the whole pelagic food web.  相似文献

 The nature of heat coma was examined in the edible periwinkle Littorina littorea (L.). Duration of acclimation did not influence heat-coma temperature at 12 °C, although other acclimation temperatures were important in influencing thermal tolerance, with positive shifts in coma temperature observed in response to elevated temperatures. Previous thermal history also influenced heat-coma temperatures. Individuals subjected to repeat heat-coma events on a daily basis showed significant declines (P < 0.05) in coma-temperature; in contrast individuals exposed to repeat heat-coma events on a weekly basis showed no decline in thermal tolerance.
