Strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) contents in the otoliths of yellow and silver European eels [Anguilla anguilla (L.)] collected from coastal waters of the Baltic Sea and a freshwater lake in Sweden were examined by wavelength dispersive X-ray spectrometry with an electron microprobe. The mean Sr/Ca ratios from elver check to otolith edge were significantly higher for the eels from coastal waters (5.39 ± 1.09‰) than for those from the lake (0.71 ± 0.89‰). The evidence indicates that European eels in the Baltic Sea do not necessarily migrate into freshwater streams during the growth phase. Received: 30 September 1999 / Accepted: 6 April 2000  相似文献

The swimbladders of three species of myctophid fishes (Symbolophorus californiensis, Tarletonbeania crenularis and Diaphus theta, collected in the Southern California Bight between 1963 and 1978), previously observed to have both inflated and noninflated swimbladders as adults, were examined to determine if the swimbladders either vary in their inflation on a diel basis or cease to be inflated and possibly become nonfunctional in some individuals. The swimbladders of two lanternfishes reported to lack inflated swimbladders as adults (Lampanyctus regalis and L. ritteri) were included in the study for comparison. Only the swimbladder of L. regalis did not increase in size with increasing fish size. In the remaining four species, both the lengths and volumes of noninflated swimbladders were positively correlated with fish standard length (SL). Although the swimbladder continued to increase in size, inflated swimbladders were not found in L. ritteri>2 mm SL. Inflated and noninflated swimbladders occurred in overlapping size ranges of S. californiensis, T. crenularis, and D. theta. Only 11% of the D. theta swimbladders were inflated, and the occurrence of inflated swimbladders dit not differ significantly with day vs night capture or fish size. Although the frequency of occurrence of inflated swimbladders decreased significantly in larger S. californiensis, both S. californiensis and T. crenularis caught at the surface at night with a neuston net had significantly higher proportions of inflated swimbladders than did those collected below the surface with either daytime or night-time trawls. The swimbladder does not appear to become nonfunctional in either species. Rather than maintaining either constant volumes or constant masses of gas in their swimbladders during their vertical migrations, both species may inflate their swimbladders only while in the surface waters at night, and have noninflated swimbladders while at other depths of their vertical ranges.  相似文献

In order to examine the variation in migratory history of the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica, we measured otolith strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) concentrations by X-ray electron microprobe analysis in 5 yellow eels and 20 silver eels collected in the coastal waters of the Amakusa Islands during the spawning migration season. Three migratory types categorized as river eels, estuarine eels and sea eels were found. Estuarine eels were dominant (52%), sea eels were the second most abundant (28%), followed by river eels (20%). The low proportion of river eels from the spawning migration season suggested that the estuarine and sea eels that inhabit the nearby coastal areas might make a larger reproductive contribution to the next generation in this area, although similar analyses should be made over the wide-range geographic distribution of this species, to provide better estimates of the reproductive contributions by different migratory patterns of the population.  相似文献

In order to understand the reproductive contribution among migratory types in the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica, otolith strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) concentrations by X-ray electron microprobe analysis were examined for 37 silver eels collected in Kii Channel off Shikoku Island during the spawning migration season. The wide range of otolith Sr:Ca ratios indicated that the habitat use of A. japonica was not obligatory but facultative among fresh, brackish and marine waters during their growth phases after recruitment to the coastal areas as glass eels. Three migratory types, which were categorized as river eels, estuarine eels and sea eels were found. The estuarine eels were dominant (59%), followed by sea eels (22%) and river eels (19%). The low proportion of river eels from the spawning migration season suggested that the estuarine and sea eels inhabiting the nearby coastal areas might make a larger reproductive contribution to the next generation in this area.  相似文献

Lipid compositions, water contents, swimbladder morphologies and specific gravities were studied for 19 species of oceanic midwater fishes, chiefly myctophids (lanternfishes) collected offshore from Oregon and California from 1975–1979. Three groups of species were recognizable. The first group had bodies low in both lipid and water content; they were denser than seawater, regardless of swimbladder morphology, which varied from absent through non-inflated to inflated. The second group had bodies low in lipid but high in water content; they were neutrally buoyant, evidently because of their high content of water, although their swimbladders were never inflated. The majority of the members of the aforementioned groups contained higher proportions of triglycerides than wax esters. The third group had bodies with high lipid but low water content; those with high triglyceride content had swimbladders ranging from non-inflated to (less commonly) inflated, were denser than seawater, and the lipid percentage of their body weights varied both with size and season, indicating that triglycerides function mainly as an energy store. The adults of species in the third group with a higher content of wax esters than triglycerides lacked inflated swimbladders, were neutrally buoyant, and the lipid percentage of their body weights was relatively constant with size and season, indicating that wax esters permit these fishes to attain neutral buoyancy in seawater.  相似文献

The migration pattern of silver eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) in the Baltic is well documented from many tagging experiments. This particular investigation differed from previous taggings in that the background of all the eels used was the same. They came from a 1980 stocking programme and had been imported from France as glass eels. When migrating these stocked eels missed the outlet of the Baltic and continued in a south-westerly direction. They were still reported in this southern-most area more than 4 yr later. Indigenous eels turn northwards after passing the south of Sweden and leave the Baltic through the narrow Sound. Since the formerly stocked eels had never been in the Baltic, the absence of an imprinted olfaction cue may explain their orientation failure. Although lacking an imprinted olfaction cue eels were recaptured mainly in a very restricted area in the southwestern Baltic. This reflects another cue, genetic or imprinted during the Atlantic journey. This second cue, temperate, can also serve as the trigger which causes eels to stop migrating and to initiate spawning. The enclosed Baltic acts as a giant trap for eels from the huge stocking programmes undertaken there. As a consequence stocked eels probably contribute little to spawning stocks in the Sargasso Sea which may have contributed to the decrease in abundance of glass eels reported from western Europe in recent decades.  相似文献

In the Mid-Atlantic Bight, conger eels (Conger oceanicus) occur from the coastal portions of estuaries to the edge of the continental shelf. In deeper waters they occupy burrows of the tilefish (Lopholatilus chamaeleonticeps). Between 1972 and 1974 we examined the stomachs and intestines of conger eels from inshore New Jersey (USA) waters (n=35, with a total length: TL of 21 to 49 cm) and between 1980 and 1983 offshore (n=295, 50 to 125 cm TL)_collections. Eels from both areas fed primarily on decapod crustaceans and fish. The specific identity of prey items within these groups generally differed from inshore to offshore areas, probably reflecting the differences in prey availability. Foods of specimens collected offshore varied with size: smaller eels (<80 cm TL) fed most heavily on decapod crustaceans, whereas larger eels (>80 cm) consumed more fishes. The presence of some nocturnally active prey items in the gut, primarily the eel Lepophidium cervinum, suggests that conger eels are nocturnal feeders. This is supported by in situ observations that conger eels are present in some tilefish burrows during the day and are presumably out of burrows and foraging at night.  相似文献

It is expected that the Baltic region becomes a major centre of economic growth and prosperity in Europe already during this decade (Anon. 2000). Therefore, an Agenda 21 for the Baltic region (Baltic 21) was developed to ensure a sustainable development. Especially the coastal ecosystems are subject to increasing anthropogenic pressure e.g. eutrophication, traffic, harbours, tourism or offshore wind parks. Eutrophication remains the main ecological problem in the Baltic Sea and has serious negative social and economical consequences. Inner and outer coastal waters play an important role as buffers and filters for the Baltic proper. Consequently, the utilization and preservation of their self-purification capacity is of great importance. Combined results of our own coastal research and of the international workshop ‘Baltic coastal ecosystems: structure, function and coastal zone management’ (Rostock University, November 2001) are presented here. Conclusions for an improved integrated coastal zone management of Baltic coastal ecosystems will be presented.  相似文献

Concentrations of a wide range of trace elements: arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, hafnium, nickel, thorium, uranium, zinc and the rare earth elements, cerium, europium, samarium, terbium and ytterbium were determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis in the brown alga,Fucus vesiculosus from Eckwarder Hörne, North Sea and from Rügen, Baltic Sea. Another brown alga,Sargassum filipendula from Sri Lanka, Indian ocean (representing an unpolluted control station) was similarly investigated. Cobalt, chromium and nickel concentrations were highest inF. vesiculosus from the North Sea while zinc was highest in samples from the Baltic Sea, reflecting high levels of these elements in coastal waters of the North and the Baltic sea. Cadmium, cobalt, nickel and zinc levels were lowest inS. filipendula from Sri Lanka, probably demonstrating lower levels of those elements in coastal waters. Concentration levels of hafnium, thorium, uranium, and the rare earth elements were highest inS. filipendula. Two years later in 1994,S. filipendula along withUlva sp. (green alga) was resampled from the same sampling site, and in addition to the above elements, six other trace elements (Ag, Ba, Br, Rb, Se and Sr) were determined.Sargassium filipendula showed a particular affinity for Ag, As, Br and Sr. For the other elements, marginal concentration differences were observed betweenS. filipendula andUlva sp., probably reflecting the regional background levels. Substantially higher concentrations of Hf, Th, U, and the rare earths were found again in the 1994Sargassum andUlva samples, reflecting the effect of a substrate rich in rare earth elements. The brown algae used in this study may be used to monitor trace elements in coastal waters.  相似文献

In order to understand the migratory history and habitat use of the tropical anguillid eels Anguilla celebesensis, A. marmorata, and A. bicolor bicolor, the otolith strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) concentrations were examined for eels collected in Indonesian waters. In A. bicolor bicolor collected in a lagoon, the change in Sr:Ca ratios outside the high Sr:Ca core generally indicated two patterns of habitat residence: (1) constant living in either brackish or sea waters with no freshwater life (25%) and (2) habitat shifts from fresh water to brackish or sea waters (75%). No A. bicolor bicolor had a general life history as a freshwater resident. A. celebesensis and A. marmorata from the uppermost freshwater lake showed freshwater life history patterns. The wide range of otolith Sr:Ca ratios in A. bicolor bicolor indicated that the habitat use of this tropical eel was facultative among fresh, brackish, and marine waters during the growth phase after recruitment to coastal areas similar to that for temperate eels. Thus, the migration of anguillid eels into fresh water is clearly not an obligatory.  相似文献

Allozyme electrophoresis was conducted in an attempt to identify the origin ofMarenzelleria sp. found in the North Sea and Baltic Sea. The analysis covered eight enzymes with ten loti from nine populations found on the North American Atlantic toast, these populations in the North Sea and five populations in the Baltic. The North Sea spionids correspond to the Type IMarenzelleria from North American coastal waters between Barnstable Harbor (Massachusetts) and Cape Henlopen (Delaware). Nei's genetic distance between these North American populations and those from the North Sea wasD = 0.010 to 0.020. TheMarenzelleria sp. found in the Baltic Sea very probably stems from North American populations of Type II found from the region of Chesapeake Bay (Trippe Bay) south to the Currituck Sound (North Carolina). The genetic distance between these North American populations and the Baltic populations isD = 0.000 to 0.001. The invaders appear to have lost little of their genetic variation while colonizing the North and Baltic Seas. Probably, both colonizing events tan be attributed to large numbers of individuals reaching Europe simultaneously on one or more occasions. In addition, aMarenzelleria Type III was found by electrophoresis among specimens from Currituck Sound (North Carolina), rohere it is sympatric withMarenzelleria Type II. Salinity is discussed as an important factor for the establishment ofMarenzelleria Type I in the North Sea and Type II in the Baltic Sea.  相似文献

Linked river basin and coastal water models were applied to analyse the effects of an optimal nitrogen management scenario in the Oder/Odra river basin on water quality in the Oder (Szczecin) Lagoon and the Pomeranian Bay (Baltic Sea). This scenario would reduce nitrogen loads into the coastal waters by about 35%, a level which is similar to the load of the late 1960’s. During summer the primary production and algae biomass in the Oder estuary is limited by nitrogen, which makes a nitrogen management reasonable. The comparison of the late 1960’s and the mid 1990’s shows that an optimal nitrogen management has positive effects on coastal water quality and algae biomass. However, this realistic nitrogen reduction scenario would not ensure a good coastal water quality according to the European Water Framework Directive. A good water quality in the river will not be sufficient to ensure a good water quality in the lagoon. Nitrogen load reductions bear the risk of increased potentially toxic, blue-green algae blooms, especially in the Baltic coastal sea. However, to reach water quality improvements in lagoons and inner coastal waters, nitrogen cuts are necessary. A mere focus on phosphorus is not sufficient.  相似文献

Total lipid contents and the proportions of triacylglycerols and wax esters were examined in 23 species of deep-sea fishes collected between 1977 and 1980 in the Santa Catalina, San Clemente and San Pedro Basins off Southern California, USA. Mean total lipid content ranged from 1 to 22% of wet weight. Triacylglycerols accounted for 1 to 91% of total lipids present and were more abundant than wax esters in the lipids of all but a single species. Wax ester contents ranged from 0 to 24% of total lipids but in 20 species were 10% of the lipids. These results do not substantiate the previously suggested idea that wax esters are important constituents of the lipids of deep-sea fishes. Moreover, the hypothesis that wax ester content increases with increasing depth of occurrence is not supported. To assess the importance of the lipids present in bouyancy regulation, the water content and swimbladder inflation of these species were also examined. Neither total lipids nor wax esters appear to play an important role in buoyancy regulation in the majority of these fishes. Eight species have gas-filled swimbladders. Of the species lacking inflated swimbladders, 7 have watery bodies (87 to 95% H2O) and 6 with low lipid (8.3%) and water (85%) contents may need to swim continuously to maintain their position in the water column. Lipids, largely in the form of triacylglycerols, may be important in the buoyancy of three species with lipid contents>10% of wet weight. Two of these species also possess inflated swimbladders. The reasons for the production of large quantitites of was esters by certain deep-sea teleosts, especially gonostomatids and myctophids, remain unknown.  相似文献

The accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will lower the pH in ocean waters, a process termed ocean acidification (OA). Despite its potentially detrimental effects on calcifying organisms, experimental studies on the possible impacts on fish remain scarce. While adults will most likely remain relatively unaffected by changes in seawater pH, early life-history stages are potentially more sensitive, due to the lack of gills with specialized ion-regulatory mechanisms. We tested the effects of OA on growth and development of embryos and larvae of eastern Baltic cod, the commercially most important fish stock in the Baltic Sea. Cod were reared from newly fertilized eggs to early non-feeding larvae in 5 different experiments looking at a range of response variables to OA, as well as the combined effect of CO2 and temperature. No effect on hatching, survival, development, and otolith size was found at any stage in the development of Baltic cod. Field data show that in the Bornholm Basin, the main spawning site of eastern Baltic cod, in situ levels of pCO2 are already at levels of 1,100 μatm with a pH of 7.2, mainly due to high eutrophication supporting microbial activity and permanent stratification with little water exchange. Our data show that the eggs and early larval stages of Baltic cod seem to be robust to even high levels of OA (3,200 μatm), indicating an adaptational response to CO2.  相似文献

The occurrence of zooplankton species, indicating a salinewater influx from the North Sea into the Baltic Sea in 1972, is described. Particular attention is paid to 8 species so far unknown in this region (Ectopleura dumortieri, Rosacea plicata, Tomopteris kefersteini, Aetideus armatus, Centropages typicus, Eucalanus elongatus, Metridia lucens, Electra pilosa). The appearance of these zooplankters in the Southern Baltic Sea is discussed in relation to the hhdrographic changes taking place in this area in 1972. Based on these data, assessments are made regarding the intensity of dynamic exchange processes in the Baltic and North Atlantic waters in 1972.  相似文献

Background, aim, and scope Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are important environmental contaminants in the marine environment. The Baltic is known to be significantly contaminated with PAH. The eelpout (Zoarces viviparus) has been used for coastal monitoring in the Baltic. The aim of the present study was to elucidate whether the eelpout can be used to investigate PAH contamination in the Mecklenburg Bight and whether PAH sources may be revealed by the relation of the metabolites. Material and methods PAH metabolites were determined in the bile fluid of eelpout caught in spring 2008 at three sampling locations in the Wismar Bight. Two metabolites were determined by means of HPLC and fluorescence detection. In addition, bile pigments were measured photometrically. Results The concentrations of 1-hydroxypyrene in bile were significantly different at all three sampling locations under investigation. Highest concentrations were found near the city of Wismar with a mean value of 1086?ng/ml. Concentrations for individual fish ranged from <22.5 to 3317?ng/ml 1-hydroxypyrene. Concentrations of 1-hydroxyphenanthrene were lower and ranged from 2.1 to 803?ng/ml in individual samples. In fish caught next to the city of Wismar a mean value of 96?ng/ml 1-hydroxyphenanthrene was calculated. Discussion In the light of substantial anthropogenic contamination in this area caused by harbor, shipyards and shipping traffic, high values of 1-hydroxypyrene found in eelpout near the city of Wismar appear to be very plausible. Furtheron, the 1-hydroxypyrene results are in accordance to literature data. 1-Hydroxyphenantrene in eelpout bile was found in higher concentrations compared to earlier investigations. Spatial differences in the relation of the two metabolites may indicate a local source of PAH. Recommendations and perspectives PAH metabolites are useful parameters for monitoring the PAH pollution of fish like eelpout. Additional information regarding potential PAH sources can be gained from the relations of individual metabolites.  相似文献

Homing has been studied in 2,828 tagged eels Anguilla anguilla (L.) which had been transplanted in 1968 and 1969 over distances up to 253 km off the coasts of Germany and the Netherlands. Of the tagged specimens, and average of 9.9% were recaptured in 1968 and 2.9% in 1969. Recapture percentages were highest (up to 20%, depending upon the intensity of fyke net fishery) near the coast, especially along the IJsselmeer Dike. The return percentages of 2 types of tags (small plastic dises with perlon thread and flexible plastic arrows) gave similar results. Forty days after transplantation, recapture values decreased markedly, probably due to tag loss. The homing tendency decreased at displacement distances exceeding 133 km. However, even over such long distances, a fair number of eels were still recaptured on routes pointing towards the home area. Single eels returned to their home area over a range of more than 200 km. Straying eels have been recaptured within shorter distances from the releasing point. The period of time between release and recapture was shorter with straying than with homing individuals. These investigations confirm that homing of eels is possible not only in North-South, but also in West-East or East-West directions. The long distance (East-West) homing certainly excludes olfactory orientation because of the North-East flowing residual current of the southern North Sea.  相似文献

This study reviewed literature on spawning times for three north temperate species of anguillid eels estimated by sampling for small leptocephali (larvae) at sea and for several temperate and tropical species by back-calculating from putative daily ages derived from otolith increment analysis of glass eels that recruited to coastal waters. Estimates from otoliths of European eels, Anguilla anguilla, American eels, Anguilla rostrata, and Japanese eels, Anguilla japonica, imply much more protracted spawning seasons than are indicated by sampling at sea during various times of year. European eels are inferred to spawn year-round from otolith analysis, but the smallest, recently hatched leptocephali are found only in late winter and spring. From otoliths, the spawning times of these three species are all estimated to occur much later in the year than when small leptocephali are found at sea, indicating that ages appear to be underestimated. For these and other temperate and tropical eels, there are inconsistencies in assigned ages among various studies, which are most extreme for the European eel. This species has the longest larval migration and often has an opaque zone in the glass eels’ otoliths where it is difficult to discern growth increments. These inconsistencies suggest that interpretation of otolith growth increments is incorrect at least in some studies, and the apparently consistent mismatch between otolith and sea-sampling studies suggests that increments may not always be formed at some period during the unusual early life history of anguillids. Because daily increments may be formed in eels during most of their early life history, future research is needed to determine the cause of the mismatch of glass eel aging studies and the apparent spawning times of eels offshore. Measurements of primary production in the Baltic Sea over a period of 2 years (1969/1971) by the 14C method are reported. The rate of total annual production for the Baltic Sea proper and the Gulf of Finland including coastal areas appears to lie between 35 and 40 gC·m2, a rate which can be assumed as characteristic for oligotrophic waters with a low production rate. An apparent increase in productivity between the 2 years could be noted. Calculations for the water mass below the halocline show that between 0.7 and 0.8 ml/l oxygen is used up during a period of 3 months required for the development of anoxic conditions. The major portion of the organic matter in the Baltic Sea undergoes decomposition in the sub-photic zone above the halocline. The ratio of organic material in deep water to the total available oxidizable matter appears to remain constant with time; therefore, the apparent increase in productivity in the photic layer does not affect apprecibly the development of anoxic conditions in deep water. Of the different areas investigated, the Gulf of Finland seems to be the most productive. In the southern Baltic Sea, the rate of production over 5 years between 1966 and 1971 has not changed appreciably. In fact, it shows a trend toward a slight decrease, whereas, in other areas of the Baltic Sea, the rate of production indicates an apparent increase. Comparison with oceanic coastal areas of the west coast of Sweden shows that the rate of production there is higher than in the Baltic Sea. Of the micronutrients controlling productivity in the photic layer of the Baltic Sea, nitrate has a stronger limiting effect on plant growth than phosphate, a fact which is in agreement with existing conceptions on the subject. Dissolved iron does not seem to exert any appreciable influence on the productivity.  相似文献

Dissolved nutrients, Chl-a and primary productivity were measured from seven transects along the coastal waters of the southeastern Arabian Sea during northeast monsoon. Ten major estuaries were chosen to study the influence of estuarine discharge on the nutrient dynamics in the coastal waters. The mean water discharge of the estuaries in the north (64.8?±?18?×?105?m3?d?1) was found to be higher than those in the south (30.6?±?21.4?×?105?m3?d?1), whereas the nutrient concentrations were found to be higher in the estuaries of the south. The results from the offshore waters were discussed in accordance with the depth contour classification, that is, shelf (depth?≤?30?m) and slope waters (depth?≥?30?m). Our results suggest that the estuarine discharge plays a major role in the nutrient distribution in near shore shelf waters, whereas in shelf and slope waters, it was mainly controlled by in situ biological processes. The inorganic form of N to P ratios were found to be higher than Redfield ratio in slope waters when compared with shelf waters, suggesting that PO43? (<0.15?µmol?L?1) is a limiting nutrient for primary production. The multivariate statistical analysis revealed that the nutrient dynamics in the coastal waters was controlled by both biological and physical processes.  相似文献
