Australian and U.S. News Media Portrayal of Sharks and Their Conservation
Bret A. Muter  Meredith L. Gore  Katie S. Gledhill  Christopher Lamont  Charlie Huveneers 《Conservation biology》2013,27(1):187-196
Investigation of the social framing of human–shark interactions may provide useful strategies for integrating social, biological, and ecological knowledge into national and international policy discussions about shark conservation. One way to investigate social opinion and forces related to sharks and their conservation is through the media's coverage of sharks. We conducted a content analysis of 300 shark‐related articles published in 20 major Australian and U.S. newspapers from 2000 to 2010. Shark attacks were the emphasis of over half the articles analyzed, and shark conservation was the primary topic of 11% of articles. Significantly more Australian articles than U.S. articles treated shark attacks (χ2 = 3.862; Australian 58% vs. U.S. 47%) and shark conservation issues (χ2 = 6.856; Australian 15% vs. U.S. 11%) as the primary article topic and used politicians as the primary risk messenger (i.e., primary person or authority sourced in the article) (χ2 = 7.493; Australian 8% vs. U.S. 1%). However, significantly more U.S. articles than Australian articles discussed sharks as entertainment (e.g., subjects in movies, books, and television; χ2 = 15.130; U.S. 6% vs. Australian 1%) and used scientists as the primary risk messenger (χ2 = 5.333; U.S. 25% vs. Australian 15%). Despite evidence that many shark species are at risk of extinction, we found that most media coverage emphasized the risks sharks pose to people. To the extent that media reflects social opinion, our results highlight problems for shark conservation. We suggest that conservation professionals purposefully and frequently engage with the media to highlight the rarity of shark attacks, discuss preventative measures water users can take to reduce their vulnerability to shark encounters, and discuss conservation issues related to local and threatened species of sharks. When integrated with biological and ecological data, social‐science data may help generate a more comprehensive perspective and inform conservation practice. Schadstoffbelastete Erzeugnisse im Verbraucherbereich: Wird REACH zu Verbesserungen führen?
F. Kalberlah  M. Schwarz  D. Bunke  J. Wurbs 《Environmental Sciences Europe》2010,22(3):188-204
Aim and Background Currently, the protection from hazardous substances occurring in consumer articles is often insufficient. In this paper, we discuss whether this situation will improve relevantly in the course of the implementation of the new European regulation on chemical substances (REACH). Changes under REACH may be heterogeneous. Therefore, differential effects depending on the tonnage as placed on the market, on the amount of substances contained in an article, and depending on timelines and exemptions for meeting the legal requirements, are discussed in this paper, together with a presentation of some uses of substances serving as examples. Discussion and Conclusions If substances are adequately registered, all identified and supported uses including their use in articles should be assessed. Therefore, where the full implementation of the registration conditions applies a substantial improvement may be expected due to REACH. Usually, producers or importers of articles are not required to register substances contained in these articles. Instead, the manufacturer or importer of the respective substance is usually responsible for registration, if exposure to the substance cannot be excluded and emission of the substance from an article is not the intended purpose. This may differ for substances intentionally released from articles. Additional obligations for substances not intentionally released mainly apply to substances of very high concern (SVHC). For the latter, the producer or importer of articles has to notify the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) on the occurrence of the respective SVHC in articles. This information is important, especially because substances in imported articles may not be registered in advance. Authorisation within REACH is a very far reaching and effective tool of the legislation. However, authorisation is not required for SVHC imported as components of articles. Therefore, one main effect intended by REACH, i.?e. the substitution of SVHC, may possibly be undermined by importers of SVHC in articles. Restrictions, as specified in Annex XVII of REACH, offer a powerful opportunity to improve health and environmental safety with respect to hazardous substances. We support an extended understanding of what is defined as a “substance of concern” in the context of restrictions. This definition should be broader than just what is currently covered by the term SVHC. Consequences of restrictions may equally apply to European producers and importers of articles from outside of Europe, which contain such substances of concern. Another instrument currently closely linked to SVHC (in its more restricted definition), is the obligation of the producer or importer of articles to provide information according to article 33 (REACH). The downstream recipient of an article has to be informed on the content of SVHC in this article and how its safe use is ensured. Warehouses, wholesalers and other traders may therefore be aware of the SVHC contained in articles and may look for substitutes without such ingredients. Also, consumers may request this information on SVHC (just provided on demand) and are thus enabled to decide to buy other articles with less hazardous properties.  相似文献

Pharmazeutisch aktive Substanzen in kleinen Fließgewässern
Korbinian P. Freier  Rainer Brüggemann  Gunnar Nützmann 《Environmental Sciences Europe》2007,19(3):189-196

Background

Current hydrological research is increasingly focusing on pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs). Concerning the issue of quality of drinking water, this problem has also become the focus of public interest. However, in spire of the fact that the fate of chemicals in surface waters has been assessed in great detail, the influence of groundwater-exchange is yet only little known.

Goal

This study gives emphasis to the question of how transport and degradation of PhACs interact with the exchange of surface water with groundwater. Special interest is given to alternating groundwater regimes.

Methods

Based on a small stream system in the north of Berlin, Germany, a one-dimensional compartment-model was established using differential mass-balance. The stream which, at its mouth, discharges 0.3 m3 s?1 is already well investigated and thus provides a good empirical data basis. The processes taken into account by the model were ‘exchange of surface-water with groundwater’, ‘decomposition’ as well as ‘transport’ of PhACs. Calculations were performed using the commonly used analgesic Diclofenac as an example and defining 81 scenarios by different groundwater regimes. Hasse Diagramm Technique was used to compare the scenarios.

Results

All scenarios show a big influence of groundwater-exchange to the fate and concentration of PhACs in surface waters. In the case of the modelled stream system, dilution by groundwater was more responsible for a decrease in concentration than degradation was. Furthermore, on the background of a standard scenario, the loss due to groundwater by 5.4 percent was in the same magnitude as the loss due to decomposition (9.7 percent). A crucial difference between punctual versus linear afflux of groundwater has not been observed.

Discussion

The alteration of discharge resulted in a big influence of the case differentiation between ‘constant velocity’ and ‘constant cross-section’. Furthermore, the model was based on the assumption that groundwater was unloaded with PhACs or diluted very well in comparison to the stream. In contrast, regarding measurements in the catchment, groundwater could even be a diffuse source of the contamination of the stream.

Conclusions

The fate of PhACs in our model is crucially driven by interactions with groundwater. Therefore, assessing the risk emanating from substances like Diclofenac, it is very important to regard their accessibility to decomposition as well as the morphology of the stream-system and its interactions with the groundwater.

Perspectives

In this model, the process of transport from the surface to groundwater back to the surface was dealt with insufficiently; in order to be able to observe fully developed interaction in a further step of modelling, a groundwater-transportmodel should be coupled completely with a surface-water-model.  相似文献

Model selection criteria for overdispersed data and their application to the characterization of a host-parasite relationship
Hyun-Joo Kim  Joseph E. Cavanaugh  Tad A. Dallas  Stephanie A. Foré 《Environmental and Ecological Statistics》2014,21(2):329-350
In the statistical modeling of a biological or ecological phenomenon, selecting an optimal model among a collection of candidates is a critical issue. To identify an optimal candidate model, a number of model selection criteria have been developed and investigated based on estimating Kullback’s (Information theory and statistics. Dover, Mineola, 1968) directed or symmetric divergence. Criteria that target the directed divergence include the Akaike (2nd international symposium on information theory. Akadémia Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary, pp 267–281, 1973, IEEE Trans Autom Control AC 19:716–723, 1974) information criterion, AIC, and the “corrected” Akaike information criterion (Hurvich and Tsai in Biometrika 76:297–307, 1989), AICc; criteria that target the symmetric divergence include the Kullback information criterion, KIC, and the “corrected” Kullback information criterion, KICc (Cavanaugh in Stat Probab Lett 42:333–343, 1999; Aust N Z J Stat 46:257–274, 2004). For overdispersed count data, simple modifications of AIC and AICc have been increasingly utilized: specifically, the quasi Akaike information criterion, QAIC, and its corrected version, QAICc (Lebreton et al. in Ecol Monogr 62(1):67–118 1992). In this paper, we propose analogues of QAIC and QAICc based on estimating the symmetric as opposed to the directed divergence: QKIC and QKICc. We evaluate the selection performance of AIC, AICc, QAIC, QAICc, KIC, KICc, QKIC, and QKICc in a simulation study, and illustrate their practical utility in an ecological application. In our application, we use the criteria to formulate statistical models of the tick (Dermacentor variabilis) load on a white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) in northern Missouri.  相似文献

Part I : <Emphasis Type="Italic">a priori</Emphasis> study of erosion and deposition with large eddy simulation of turbulent flow over multiple 2D sandy Gaussian hills
G. Huang  C. Le Ribault  I. Vinkovic  S. Simoëns 《Environmental Fluid Mechanics》2018,18(3):581-609
The micro-scale prediction of sand trapping or take-off over hilly terrains is a crucial issue in semi-arid regions for soil depletion. In this context, large eddy simulations around one or several hills are performed in order to provide statistical parameters to characterize the flow at micro-scales and provide data for mesoscale modelling. We focus on the determination of recirculation zones since they play an important role in solid particle erosion or entrapment. A new wall modeling adapted from Huang et al. (J Turbul 17:1–24, 2016) for rough boundary layers is found to improve the prediction of the recirculation zone length downstream of an isolated hill and is used for all the numerical cases presented here. A geometrical parameterization of the recirculation zones is proposed. When the recirculation region is assumed to have an ellipsoidal shape, the total surface of the recirculation can be obtained from this new parameterization and easily extrapolated to more general dune configurations. Numerical results are compared with experiments performed in our laboratory (Simoëns et al. in Procedia IUTAM 17:110–118, 2015) and good agreement is achieved. We explore general aerodynamic cases deduced from the urban canopy scheme of Oke (Energy Build 11:103–113, 1988). In this scheme the momentum and mass exchange between the upper layer and the space between hills is sorted according to the streamwise hill spacing within three basic cases of skimming, wake or isolated flow. The study of the recirculation zones, the mean velocity and Reynolds stress profiles around an isolated or two consecutive hills with different distances shows that the double hill configuration with 3H separation behaves as much as a whole to the upcoming flow. The vortex formed between the crests does not strongly affect the overall evolution of the outer flow. By an a priori prediction of the preferential zones of erosion and accumulation of fictive particles, it is shown that isolated dunes present more deposition and less erosion than two-hill configurations. The results presented in this study will be discussed in the presence of Lagrangian transport of sand particles above 2D Gaussian hills in future work.  相似文献

The response of temperate aquatic ecosystems to global warming: novel insights from a multidisciplinary project
Ulrich Sommer  Rita Adrian  Barbara Bauer  Monika Winder 《Marine Biology》2012,159(11):2367-2377
This article serves as an introduction to this special issue of Marine Biology, but also as a review of the key findings of the AQUASHIFT research program which is the source of the articles published in this issue. AQUASHIFT is an interdisciplinary research program targeted to analyze the response of temperate zone aquatic ecosystems (both marine and freshwater) to global warming. The main conclusions of AQUASHIFT relate to (a) shifts in geographic distribution, (b) shifts in seasonality, (c) temporal mismatch in food chains, (d) biomass responses to warming, (e) responses of body size, (f) harmful bloom intensity, (f), changes of biodiversity, and (g) the dependence of shifts to temperature changes during critical seasonal windows.  相似文献

Comparative study on paralytic shellfish toxin profiles of the dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum from three different countries
Y. Oshima  S. I. Blackburn  G. M. Hallegraeff 《Marine Biology》1993,116(3):471-476
Paralytic shellfish toxin profiles of the dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum Graham were investigated as a possible biochemical marker to distinguish different geographic populations of this species. Isolates obtained between 1986 and 1988 from Japan, Tasmania (Australia) and Galicia (Spain) were cultured under similar conditions and the toxins produced were analyzed using HPLC. Variations in temperature, salinity, and nitrate and phosphate levels in the culture medium had no significant effect on the toxin profile, suggesting that toxins can be used as a stable biochemical marker for this dinoflagellate. All the isolates produced mainly toxins of the N-sulfocarbamoyl group (C1–C4, gonyautoxins 5 and 6) but their relative abundance differed according to their geographic origin. Furthermore, only the Australian population produced the newly found 13-deoxydecarbamoyl toxins, and these could readily be used to distinguish the Australian populations from those of the other two countries.  相似文献

Writing it down: suggestions for a new approach towards understanding pro-environmental behaviour
L. Reid  C. Hunter  P. Sutton 《国际发展与全球生态学杂志》2013,20(6):369-373
A fashionable field of enquiry – the relationship between expressed attitudes and actual behaviour in the context of sustainable development – is complex (Staats et al. 2004 Staats, H, Harland, P and Wilke, H. 2004. Effecting durable change: a team approach to improve environmental behaviour in the household. Environ Behav., 36(3): 341367. [Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) and difficult to apply in a policy-relevant manner (Aall and Norland 2005 Aall, C and Norland, I. 2005. The use of the ecological footprint in local politics and administration: results and implications from Norway. Local Environ., 10(2): 159172. [Taylor & Francis Online] [Google Scholar]). However, recent research indicates that the use of a household diary can be beneficial in helping to quantify household environmental impact, in educating householders about their impact, and in identifying major ‘behavioural turning points’, where householders may focus efforts to reduce their environmental impact (Hunter et al. 2006 Hunter, C, Carmichael, K and Pangbourne, K. 2006. Household ecological footprinting using a new diary-based data-gathering approach. Local Environ, 11(3): 307327. [Taylor & Francis Online] [Google Scholar]). In other words, the use of a diary by householders is a potentially powerful tool in encouraging and facilitating desired behavioural change. This paper reports on the initial findings of an innovative study that assessed the use of a household diary approach as a means of framing and collecting household environmental data and, critically, as an educational vehicle for bringing about behavioural change. Based on the initial findings, it is clear that there is some potential to develop practical policy measures that empower householders by allowing them to better grasp their environmental impact and, consequently, recoup positive implications in terms of financial savings (e.g. reducing the amount of food thrown out) and health benefits (e.g. more walking/cycling).  相似文献

The wave-induced solute flux from submerged sediment
Christopher Earls Brennen  Jörg Imberger 《Environmental Fluid Mechanics》2014,14(1):221-234
The issue of the transport of dissolved nutrients and contaminants between the sediment in the bottom of a lake or reservoir and the body of water above it is an important one for many reasons. In particular the biological and chemical condition of the body of water is intricately linked to these mass transport processes. As the review by Boudreau (Rev Geophys 38(3):389–416, 2000) clearly demonstrates those transport processes are very complex involving mechanisms as diverse as the wave-induced flux between the sediment and the overlying water and the effect of burrowing animals on the transport within the sediment as well as basic diffusion mechanisms. The present paper focuses on one facet of these transport processes; we re-examine the balance of diffusion and wave-induced advection and demonstrate that the wave-induced flux of a solute from submerged sediment is not necessarily purely diffusive as suggested by Harrison et al. (J Geophys Res 88:7617–7622, 1983) but can be dominated by a mean or time-averaged flux induced by the advective fluid motion into and out of the sediment caused by the fluctuating pressure waves associated with wave motion. Indeed along the subtidal shoreline where the fluctuating bottom pressures are greatest, wave-induced advection will dominate the mean, time-averaged transport of solute into or out of the sediment as suggested in the work of Riedl et al. (Mar Biol 13:210–221, 1972). However, the present calculations also indicate that this advective flux decreases rapidly with increasing depth so that further away from the shoreline the advective flux becomes negligible relative to the diffusive flux and therefore the latter dominates in deeper water.  相似文献

We developed a predictive relationship to determine the grazing rate of Brachionus plicatilis at given temperatures and food concentrations; this function could be applied to experimental culturing and aquaculture practices. Grazing experiments were conducted at temperatures between 5°C and 40°C and at food concentrations, of the flagellate Isochrysis galbana, ranging between ~0 and 106 ml-1. In total, 136 grazing rates were determined, using the prey depletion method, for rotifers acclimated to treatments for 0.5 or 4 h. The response of grazing rate to temperature and food concentration was described using a model that combined a rectangular hyperbolic function for food concentration and a sigmoidal function for temperature. Using non-linear curve-fitting methods an equation was obtained: G=(452F)/(159000+F)Ǵ.94/(1+2190002T-4.35) , where G is the grazing rate (flagellates rotifer-1 min-1), F is the food concentration (flagellates ml-1), and T is temperature (°C). The equation indicates a maximum grazing rate of ~35 prey rotifer-1 min-1, above ~4᎒5 prey ml-1 and 25°C.  相似文献

The urban ecological risk incurred during the processes of urbanization has been constantly accumulating, creating a severe challenge for China to achieve sustainable urban development. At present, research on systematic evaluation of urban ecological risks is still inadequate, especially at an urban ecosystem level. In this special issue, we use Xiamen City as an example to identify the sources and receptors of urban ecological risks, to develop a methodology system of urban ecological risk assessment, and to propose a method for the management of urban ecological risks. This special issue contains 11 research articles resulting from a comprehensive research project funded by China’s National Natural Science Foundation. The innovations reported in this special issue include a framework of urban ecological risk assessment and a standardized procedure for carrying out urban ecological risk assessment using multiple stressors and endpoints.  相似文献

This essay presents (1) a short status summary on the population biology of the Mt. Graham red squirrel on the Pinaleño Mountains, Arizona; (2) a biopolitical history of the controversy surrounding the Mt. Graham red squirrel, the Endangered Species Act (ESA), and the astronomical consortium that has constructed two telescopes within the squirrel's critical habitat; and (3) a discussion of specific biopolitical issues related to the squirrel's taxonomy, minimal viable habitat, critical habitat, population viability analysis, risk management, and Congressional actions to by-pass its own laws. The biopolitical history shows how specific administrative actions within the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and special interest politics by the Arizona Congressional delegation and the University of Arizona prevented an accurate assessment of the status of the Mt. Graham red squirrel and implementation of alternatives to insure its survival and recovery. Conservation biology can influence management decisions when not overridden by special-favor politics. To improve the influence of the science of conservation biology, I recommend that the ESA language protecting isolated populations (Section 3) remain intact and that the ESA make a legal distinction (Section 4) between minimal viable habitat and critical habitat. To improve the application of the ESA, I recommend that Congress require committee hearings before it can exempt a project from federal environmental laws; that fraudulent Biological Opinions automatically trigger a complete review of long-term viability; that conservation biologists prepare a handbook for the Fish and Wildlife Service on risk assessment techniques; that all data and analyses within the Biological Opinion include a ranking by their statistical and biological certainty as well as a worst-case scenario; and that each Biological Opinion be certified as risk averse.  相似文献

Trait- and density-mediated indirect effects describe different pathways by which indirect interactions in food webs are propagated from one species to another, through changes in intermediate species. A series of articles in Ecology has progressively altered the original definitions of "trait-mediated" to the point where understanding is being impeded. The most recent of these articles are two meta-analyses that use "trait-mediated" to describe the demographic costs to a prey species of employing anti-predator defenses. These same articles introduce a companion term, "density-mediated interaction", apparently to describe direct and indirect interactions that only involve changes in population density due to consumption by predators. This new terminology has many disadvantages, including (1) using a general term for a relatively narrow group of processes; (2) using "mediated" in a manner inconsistent with existing terminology; (3) confusing the accepted definitions of different types of indirect effects; and (4) providing a highly incomplete measure of the impact of behavior on the predator-prey interaction. Solutions to these problems and the meaning of the meta-analyses are discussed.  相似文献

Background

The European chemicals regulation REACH includes the legal duty for suppliers to inform consumers on request about the presence of substances of very high concern (SVHCs) in articles. Since this requirement has been in force now for 10 years, the intention of this study was to find out whether information on SVHCs is adequately communicated to the consumer today. Data on the presence of SVHCs in articles were collected as a prerequisite for the subsequent requests for a targeted choice of articles to examine the operability of the ‘right to know.’

Results

Literature data show that SVHCs have been measured and described in a large variety of commodities. 32% of 334 information requests for articles which were suspected to contain SVHCs were answered by suppliers and a minor number of these answers were of good quality. Only two respondents indicated the presence of SVHCs in their articles. Suppliers are not legally obliged to respond to requests if their articles are free of SVHCs. Therefore, the absence of a response might be interpreted as an indication that SVHCs are present below 0.1% in the articles in question. However, there are certain doubts that only two out of 334 articles suspected contain SVHCs.

Conclusions

The data question whether the ambitious aims of the SVHC regime can be achieved under the present conditions. Measures are proposed on how to improve implementation of the information requirement and to amend the legal criteria in the upcoming REACH revision.
