The effect on shell formation of Tridacna gigas by sea water supplemented for 3 mo with ammonium (5, 10 M, N) and phosphate (2, 5, 10 M, P), separately or in combination, was examined. Exposure to N and N+P significantly enhanced shell-extension rates, but significantly reduced shell weights at equivalent size. Scanning-electron microscopy further revealed structural alterations in the outer shell layer, such as misshapen aragonite crystals, irregular crossed-lamellar orientation, and relatively porous shell microstructure. These observations are consistent with results of X-ray diffractometry on the shells which show distinct shifts in the positions of reflections from the (012) and (200) crystal planes relative to the control, indicating changes in crystal lattice parameters following addition of nutrients.  相似文献

An investigation on the abundance and distribution of trace metals (Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Cr, Cd and Pb) in water, and nine species of fish samples from Calabar river was carried out in 1992. The concentrations of iron (6000–7240gl–1), zinc (4910–7230gl–1), and cadmium (3–7gl–1) showed moderate pollution while those of copper (420–630gl–1), manganese (23–48gl–1), chromium (<10–20gl–1) and lead (<1–10gl–1) in water were well below WHO permissible levels. Significant seasonal changes (0.001p0.25) were obtained for iron, copper, zinc, manganese and cadmium in water. Furthermore, iron, zinc and cadmium showed statistically significant spatial changes (0.005p0.10). Of the nine fish species studied, no statistically significant relationship between body weight and the concentrations of the metals was observed. The concentrations of the metals per mean total body weight apparently decreases in the order Fe>Zn>Cu>Mn>Pb>Cd=Cr and were within the limits that were safe for consumption.  相似文献

The levels of organochlorine compounds in eggs of water birds from the colony on Tai Lake in China were studied. The eggs were collected in 2000 and belonged to the following species: 65 samples of black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), 36 samples of little egret (Egretta garzetta), 26 samples of cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis) from 13 clutches and 43 samples of Chinese pond heron (Ardeola bacchus) from 17 clutches. Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and its derivates (DDE and DDD), hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and its isomers (-HCH, -HCH, -HCH, -HCH), heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, aldrin, dieldrin, endrin, endrin aldehyde, -endosulfan, -endosulfan, and endosulfan sulfate were determined in the laboratory by gas chromatography. The data showed that DDE had the highest levels in all the samples, followed by -HCH. The mean levels of DDE among the water bird species were in the order as follows: black-crowned night heron (5464.26ng/g, dry weight) > Chinese pond heron (2791.12ng/g, dry weight) > little egret (1979.97ng/g, dry weight) > cattle egret (660.11ng/g, dry weight). DDT and its metabolites accounted for 90% of the total organochlorines, except that it was only 73% for cattle egret. The differences of the residue among the bird species were statistically significant and could be attributed to their variations in prey and habitat. Although the DDE burdens in Tai Lake were much lower than 8 g/g (wet weight) which are thought to have significant adverse effects on black-crowned night herons, they would be expected to increase the risk of adverse effects on survival of chicks of herons and egrets, particularly black-crowned night heron, based on the critical value of 1 g/g (wet weight) DDE. The burdens of HCHs in this study were higher and the cyclodienes were lower than those found elsewhere.  相似文献

Summary Three possible measures of male quality (social dominance, song, and size), reproduction, and survival were studied in a single population of great tits. Winter dominance position on a feeder was related to strophe length (number of phrases per strophe), inversely related to positive drift (decrease of the singing rate of the phrases in a strophe), but not related to song repertoire size. Neither winter dominance position nor song were related to size (wing length, tarso-metatarsus length, weight).Singing capacity was not correlated with individual reproductive success in a single breeding season, using a rather limited data set. However, better singers (males which sing longer strophes, show less positive drift, and have larger song repertoires) survived better and had a higher individual lifetime reproductive success (on the basis of a male's recruited offspring of all breeding seasons). Our results show that there exist measurable differences whereby birds that are dominant in winter sing better, survive longer, and produce more surviving offspring during their life time. We suggest that differences in male quality are the common cause (direct and indirect) of all these effects.  相似文献

Summary Sperm competition was investigated in the non-territorial damselfly, Enallagma hageni. Using irradiated (sterile) male techniques, the last male to mate was found to fertilize up to 95% of the eggs of the first clutch laid after mating. Dissection of females collected before, during, and after copula showed that a male removes a maximum of 87% of the sperm by volume of a previous mate. These data verify an earlier estimate of lifetime reproductive success in this species which was based on mating success, and suggest that indirect dissection methods offer minimum estimates of sperm precedence. Male E. hageni have ample opportunity to benefit from sperm precedence, since at least 10% of the receptive females encountered had already mated once that day, but still contained complete or partial clutches of eggs. Female E. hageni benefit directly from high sperm precedence because it allows them to exchange matings for guarding service by males during oviposition bouts under water.  相似文献

The feeding behaviors of Acartia clausi and A. tonsa were measured in samples of water containing low levels of a water-accommodated fraction of No. 2 fuel oil. The copepods fed normally at a hydrocarbon concentration of 70 g l-1, but their feeding behavior was altered both quantitatively and qualitatively at a concentration of 250 g l-1. Three types of response to the higher oil level were found. The first was total suppression of feeding. Both other types involved suppression of feeding on particles between 7 and 15 m diameter, but one showed no change in the ingestion of larger particles, whereas the other displayed increased feeding on particles larger than 15 m diameter. These results suggest that the species of Acartia studied use three different modes of feeding, each on a different size range of particulate material. Low-level hydrocarbon pollution affects each feeding mode differently.Contribution No. 973, Center for Environmental and Estuarine Studies of the University of Maryland  相似文献

Summary Limitations on male capacity may be important to the evolution of mating strategies and behavior. Sperm counts in successive ejaculates of deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) decreased progressively through six ejaculations and remained depressed the following day. Males were as effective in inseminating females in cycling estrus with their second two ejaculates as with their first two and as effective in inseminating postpartum females with their fifth as with their first. In sperm competition situations males competed with rested males as effectively with their fourth, fifth, and sixth ejaculates as with their first. Thus, although sperm counts decrease in successive ejaculates, males suffer no apparent functional deficiency as long as they continue ejaculating. It is not clear whether or not deer mice are honest salesmen but they appear to be honest ejaculators and usually are honest intromitters.  相似文献

Precopulatory sexual cannibalism (predation of a potential mate prior to copulation) offers an extreme example of intersexual conflict, a current focus in behavioral ecology. The aggressive-spillover hypothesis, posits that precopulatory sexual cannibalism may be a nonadaptive by-product of a general syndrome of voracity (aggression towards prey) that is expressed in multiple behavioral contexts. In this view, selection favoring high levels of voracity throughout ontogeny spills over to cause sexual cannibalism in adult females even when it is not necessarily beneficial. Using the North American fishing spider, Dolomedes triton, we present the first in depth test of this hypothesis. We found support for three aspects of the spillover hypothesis. First, voracity towards hetero-specific prey results in high feeding rates, large adult size, and increased fecundity. Second, juvenile and adult voracity are positively correlated (i.e., voracity is a consistent trait over ontogeny). Third, voracity towards hetero-specific prey is indeed positively correlated with precopulatory sexual cannibalism. Assays of antipredator behavior further revealed positive correlations between boldness towards predators, voracity and precopulatory sexual cannibalism. Overall, our results support the notion that precopulatory sexual cannibalism in D. triton is part of a behavioral syndrome spanning at least three major contexts: foraging, predator avoidance, and mating.  相似文献

One mechanism that permits the maintenance of dominance hierarchies is individual recognition, defined as the ability of an animal to recognize a conspecific on the basis of one or more identifying cues, and to associate it with experiences of victories or defeats that the animal has gained from preceding encounters with that particular individual. We examined whether the long-clawed hermit crab, Pagurus longicarpus, could differentiate between unfamiliar and familiar opponents. The experimental protocol was designed to control in pairs of interacting individuals several factors together, such as status and relative size of the opponent, as well as species, quality, and fit of the inhabited shell. The hermit crabs were more reactive and their agonistic level was higher in unfamiliar than in familiar pairs; in addition, betas were more prone to initiate an interaction with unfamiliar than with familiar alphas. The alternative explanation—that the ability to discriminate between familiar and novel shells can explain our results per se— was tested following, in part, Jackson and Elwoods (1989) protocol for Pagurus bernhardus and was, at least for this species, rejected. This study did not determine whether a true individual recognition occurs, but demonstrated that P. longicarpus categorizes the individuals into two heterogeneous subgroups, thus being capable of a binary discrimination among opponents.Communicated by T. Rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri Richardson) which had been maintained for 120 days in salinities of fresh water, 7.5, 15.0 and 32.5 at 10°C were fasted for up to 48 days under these same environmental conditions. Live weight loss between Days 7 and 48 of starvation could be described by a straight line, as could the decrease in condition factor . Trout maintained in 32.5% S showed a significantly greater weight loss than those in salinities of 15.0 and below. Muscle water content increased slightly during fasting in fresh water, 7.5 and 15.0 S. In 32.5 S, however, muscle water fell significantly between Days 19 and 37. Liver water content also increased slightly during fasting, except in 32.5 S, where water content again decreased between Days 19 and 37. The volume of the gall bladder contents increased during fasting.  相似文献

Summary Field observations were made on the mating behavior of two congeneric species of solitary bees, Anthidium porterae in an arid grassland and A. palliventre in a coastal sand dune habitat. Males of both species exhibited resource defence polygyny and defended hostplants to gain access to females foraging for nectar and pollen. The mating frequencies of marked and measured resident (territorial) males were monitored during periods of continuous observation, following which measurements of territory size and floral resources were obtained. Mating success of A. palliventre males was strongly influenced by territory characteristics: Males that defended small areas with a few rich hostplant patches mated more often than males that held larger territories containing many hostplant patches of low floral density. Large males generally held high-quality sites and thus had a mating advantage over smaller individuals. In A. porterae, on the other hand, male mating success was unrelated to any measure of territory quality. Copulation frequency and male size were positively correlated, however, apparently due to the increased ability of large males to seize and hold females for mating. The two species also differed in the incidence of non-territorial, sneaky males. While absent in A. palliventre, sneaky males accounted for 12% of all mating observed in A. porterae. Males of A. porterae that displayed sneaky tactics mated, on average, as often as resident males. Offprint requests to: E.M. Villalobos  相似文献

This paper presents a method of investigating the distributional pattern of a biological population, using a technique of simulation. The method consists of the comparison of the empirical frequency curve of a population, obtained using the Method of Quadrats, with a simulated one, since the pattern of the simulated curve depends on the simulated distribution. An example is given.  相似文献

The aragonitic shell of the photosymbiont-bearing bivalve Tridacna maxima contains a record of the physiological and environmental changes the organism has experienced during its lifetime. This record is preserved as chemical and microstructural variations throughout the shell. Stable isotopic analyses of oxygen (18O/16O) and carbon (13C/12C) in shell carbonate were combined with growth increment studies to interpret the shell record of specimens collected from the Rose Atoll (Lat. 14°31S; Long. 168°10W) in April 1982. The seasonal water temperature cycle is recorded in the oxygen isotopic signature of the clams, permitting the recognition of annual cycles in the 18O profile. The total number of these cycles corresponds to the age of a specimen, while the cycle length is a measure of the yearly growth rate. Large-amplitude cycles, reflecting year-round calcification, characterize the early portion of the growth record. With the onset of sexual maturity and slower growth at an age of approximately ten years, the cycles decrease in amplitude and become more erratic. During this later growth phase calcification is limited to the cooler months of the year, perhaps in response to a re-ordering of energy priorities between growth and gametogenesis. A growth curve developed from the 18O profile indicates rapid juvenile shell growth followed by slower growth thereafter producing a lifespan of several decades. Carbon isotopic analyses of T. maxima were compared to analyses of the symbiont-barren gastropod Terebra areolata collected from the same locality in April 1984. A 2 depletion in the 13C composition of T. maxima shell carbonate is attributed to a symbiontenhanced metabolic rate and an increased flow of isotopically light, respired CO2 into the carbon pool used in calcification. Such a depletion may prove useful in identifying the presence of photosymbionts in extinct species of fossil mollusks.  相似文献

Two studies were conducted to observe effects of dibutyltin (DBT) and tributyltin (TBT) on larvae of Mytilus edulis for an exposure period of 25 d. Endpoints for evaluation were shell growth and mortality measured at 33 d. Larvae were cultured in a new laboratory assay chamber in a recirculating static test. The control, 2, 20, and 200 g/l DBT-treated populations had mean shell lengths of 527, 523, 417, and 180 m, respectively. Survival was 1% for the 200 g/l DBT-treated population, but ranged from 73 to 83% for controls, 2, and 20 g/l treatments. The no-observed-effect concentration (NOEC) was 2 g/l for DBT, while the lowest-observed-effect concentration (LOEC) was 20 g/l. The chronic toxicity value was 6.3 g/l. In the TBT bioassay, mean shell lengths for the control, 0.006, 0.050, and 0.130 g/l-treated populations were 565, 437, 385, and 292 m, respectively. Control survival was 74%, whereas TBT-treated populations survival ranged from 52 to 58%. The NOEC for TBT was 0.006 g/l TBT and the LOEC was 0.050. A chronic toxicity value of 0.017 g/l was calculated. The results of this study indicated that the toxicity of DBT was less than that of TBT. It was concluded that shell length was inversely related to exposure level in both DBT and TBT bioassays. In this study, we have observed TBT effects at lower exposure levels in the laboratory than previously reported, and also report the first data for DBT effects on mussel larvae.  相似文献

In distilled water, marine benthic algae immediately lose ions. This can be demonstrated by means of chloride titration or conductivity measurements. The rapidity and the complete reversibility of this process show that ion movements out of and into the free space are involved. When Laminaria saccharina thalli, exposed to a series of increasing NaCl-concentrations, are subsequently transferred into distilled water, the external concentration increases proportionally to rate of ion loss. Through its free space, the alga establishes an ionic equilibrium with its external medium. If the alga thallus is killed (20 sec boiling in isosmotic sea water), the extent of chloride loss is much higher. Because of thermal destruction of the osmotic space, the chloride can then escape from the entirc thallus. Since sublittoral algae die upon drying, chloride loss from dry thalli is much higher than that from wet thalli: this difference is small in littoral algae, which tolerate short periods of dryness. A close relationship exists between extent of chloride loss and degree of resistance to drying.  相似文献

The 30-d survival limit of Eupentacta quinquesemita and Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis is 12–13 S. The activity coefficient (1 000/righting time in seconds) of stepwise acclimated sea urchins declined from 16.3 at 30 S to 3.5 at 15 S. Oxygen consumption rates (QO2) of both species held at 30 S and 13°C were highest in June and lowest in December. During the summer, when environmental salinity is most variable in southeastern Alaska, the QO2 of both species held at 30, 20 and 15 S varied directly with salinity. Perivisceral fluid PO2 varied directly with acclimation salinity in sea urchins, but not in sea cucumbers. Perivisceral fluid oxygen content of acclimated sea urchins was significantly lower at 15 and 20 S than at 30 S due to reduced PO2 and extracellular fluid volume at the lower salinities. The QO2 of both species varied directly with ambient salinity during a 30-10-30. semidiurnal pattern of fluctuating salinity. No change occurred in the average QO2 of either species over a 15-30-15. semidiurnal pattern of fluctuating salinity. Sea urchin perivisceral fluid PO2 declined as ambient salinity fluctuated away from the acclimation salinity in both cycles and increased as ambient salinity returned to the acclimation salinity. Total nitrogen excretion of stepwise acclimated sea cucumbers declined significantly from 30 to 15 S, but there was no salinity effect on total nitrogen excretion in sea urchins. Ammonia excretion varied directly with salinity in stepwise acclimated sea cucumbers (67–96% of total nitrogen excreted), but there was no salinity effect on ammonia excretion (89–95% of total nitrogen excreted) of sea urchins. Urea excretion did not vary with salinity in sea cucumbers (2–4% of total nitrogen excreted) or sea urchins (2–9% of total nitrogen excreted). Primary amines varied inversely with salinity in sea cucumbers (2–30% of total nitrogen excreted), but did not vary with salinity in sea urchins (2–4% of total nitrogen excreted). The oxygen: nitrogen ratio of both species indicated that carbohydrate and/or lipid form the primary catabolic substrate. The O:N ratio did not vary as a function of salinity. Both species are more tolerant to reduced salinity than previously reported, however, rates of oxygen consumption and/or nitrogen excretion are modified by salinity as well as season.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to develop a sensitive sublethal toxicity test protocol to determine the toxicity of municipal wastewater effluents to larvae of the red abalone Haliotis rufescens. In multiple tests, fertilized abalone embryos were exposed for 48 h to dilutions of a reference toxicant, zinc sulfate, and to dilutions of primary-and secondary-treated effluents. The resulting veliger larvae were examined microscopically for larval shell abnormalities. In a longer flowthrough experiment, abalone were exposed for the entire larval phase, from the two-cell stage through metamorphosis, to compare zinc effects on metamorphosis with zinc effects on short-term larval shell development. Dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity and temperature were measured daily in test solutions, and zinc concentrations were verified by chemical analysis. No observed effect concentrations (NOECs) for zinc were 39±2.1 g l-1 in three 48 h exposures, and 19 g l-1 for the 9 d exposure through metamorphosis. Median effect concentrations (EC50s) were 68±6.9 g l-1 in 48 h tests and 50 g l-1 in the 9 d test. Abalone larvae were affected at lower concentrations of primary than of secondary effluent.  相似文献

This study documents the effects of short-term (24h) sublethal copper exposures on undirected swimming activity and photobehavior of Balanus improvisus stage II nauplii. All Cu treatments were static, with temperature and salinity conditions at 20°C and 15 or 30. The 24h LC 50 estimate for Cu is 88 ppb at 15 and >200 ppb at 30. Sub-lethal Cu concentrations cause reductions in swimming speed, which decrease progressively with increasing Cu dose. At 50 ppb Cu, this was significant primarily at light intensities below the phototactic threshold. At higher Cu concentrations, significant reductions in mean linear velocity occurred at most light intensities tested. At 30, 50 and 100 ppb Cu also reduce the positive phototactic response and 150 ppb Cu causes reversal of phototaxis at optimal intensities. Photokinesis is reduced at 100 ppb Cu and disappears at 150 ppb Cu. At 15, the behavioral effects of 50 ppb Cu resemble those occurring with 150 ppb Cu at 30. Swimming speed and photobehavior show promise as sensitive behavioral indicators of copper toxicity. Additional research is required to determine if these responses apply to a broad range of pollutants and to other planktonic organisms. There is also a need to further evaluate the significance of these behavioral effects ecologically.Contribution No. 181 from the EPA Environmental Research Laboratory, Narragansett, RI 02882, USA  相似文献

Summary Male ruffs (Philomachus pugnax), a lekking shorebird, can generally be divided into two morphs according to behavior and plumage coloration. Predominantly dark-colored, independent male ruffs defend small territories on a lek, whereas lighter colored satellite males are non-territorial and less site-faithful to a particular lek. The traits associated with the mating success of independent male ruffs were studied at two leks during two seasons on the island of Öland, Sweden in May and June of 1985 and 1987. Using multivariate analyses, three characteristics were found to be significantly related to mating success: high frequency of visits by satellites to an independent male's residence, consistency of lek attendance, and low rates of aggressive behavior. In contrast, mating success was unrelated to the degree of darkness of the independent male nuptial plumage, territory location on the lek, or rate of courtship displays. The use of multivariate analyses helped to resolve conflicting conclusions from previous studies which employed simple statistical analyses, or none at all. Experimental manipulations are suggested which will help to further determine the influence of female mate choice in this lekking system.  相似文献

Age/shell length data for offshore surfclam, Spisula solidissima (Dillwyn, 1817), populations were used to estimate the parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth model by time period and region, from Georges Bank in the north to the Delmarva Peninsula in the south. Randomization tests were used to compare curves. We tested the a priori hypothesis that growth curves would change over time in the south (i.e., New Jersey and Delmarva) but remain constant in the north (i.e., Long Island and South New England). This hypothesis was proposed because surfclam population structure in the south had been altered by the hypoxic event of 1976, and possibly by intense, long-term commercial harvesting. Northern regions, unaffected by these factors, served as natural controls. Based on a comparison of data collected in 1980 with pooled data from 1989 and 1992, the hypothesis was supported. Both the growth coefficient (k) and maximum shell length (L ) declined between two time periods in the two southern regions, while during the same time interval, no change occurred in the two northern regions. Differences in growth between regions were often statistically significant. For example, compared with the southern regions, the growth coefficient on Georges Bank was larger, and those clams attained a smaller maximum length. In a comparison of adjacent regions from Delmarva to S. New England, k increased from south to north. This could imply faster growth in cooler water, as well as no relationship between growth and primary productivity. Alternatively, size-selective mortality, imposed by the commercial fishery, was discussed as a mechanism that might account for this unexpected pattern.  相似文献
